Chat with Calvin Watkins

Calvin Watkins
  (2:00 PM)

Welcome to the first chat of the Jason Garrett era. Fire away.

Jeff (FL)

Are you worried about getting fired for being associated with this debacle of a team?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:02 PM)

Nope. I worry about Wade Phillips and he was fired for trying to coach this team. Now Jason Garrett is running things and it appears, at least for one game, things are moving in the right direction.

Fahad (DC)

Hey Calvin, I'm a big fan, and I'm wondering whether you think Alan Ball's 4th quarter play is a sign that he is becoming comfortable with his position and is an indicator of things to come - or whether it's an aberration.... thanks!

Calvin Watkins
  (2:04 PM)

Not sure I'm putting Ball in the Ring of Honor at this stage of his career. He's made too many bad plays this season. But one thing he did well on that pick was jump the route of the receiver. We didn't see enough of that this year. Ball was back in zone, however, he was a little closer to the line of scrimmage when he made that play. It might be the start of something big for him.

Robbie (Austin)

What was the beef between Newman and Sensabaugh on field about?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:05 PM)

Newman said the secondary didn't get a defense called and there was some communication issues as to what to do on the field. Both Newman and Sensabaugh talked it out on the field and after the game, so it's all good. But it raised a red flag with me that a player said a defensive call wasn't made during a game.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the Dallas Cowboys will win 8 in a row & finish with a 9-7 Record?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:08 PM)

No. I don't believe the Cowboys can win the rest of their games, Philly twice, Washington once more, road trip to Indy, tough game vs. Lions this week and Saints on Thanksgiving Day are some of the games left. At best, Garrett should hope for is about two more wins. If he goes 3-5 the rest of the way, he's got a good chance of returning.

Brett (Dallas, TX)

Everyone is excited about the win yesterday... I am too. But what is the goal for our team at this point? We can't make the playoffs and we're not Superbowl bound. I know Garrett wants to keep his job but if win out the season we'll get mediocre draft picks. Your thoughts? I'd be happy with 4-12 at best.

Calvin Watkins
  (2:14 PM)

Brett, The best you can do at this stage is evaulate the talent. You want to know should Alan Ball or Gerald Sensabaugh return next year. The Cowboys have three defensive linemen who become free agents next year, who stays and who goes? Is this the end of Marion Barber? What about Roy Williams? David Buehler? Do you replace him?

Ramin Assar (Chantilly VA)

When will Jerry Jones admit to the fact that he made a mistake drafting Buehler and release him?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:15 PM)

I don't think cutting him is the answer. Finding another field goal kicker helps. Buehler is an OK field goal kicker but a good kickoff guy. Cowboys need to make room on the roster for one.

Marion Barber (Dallas)

Can you think of a better message about accountability than cutting me today?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:18 PM)

Nope. Cutting you won't be the answer. Felix Jones should start and they should bring you in on short yardage and on fourth quarter carries to close the deal. Next year you won't be here.

Buster (Fort Worth)

What has happened to Kevin Ogletree? Is there are reason to believe he'll be able to step in and be a capable 3rd WR next year if Roy Williams is let go?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:22 PM)

For now the Cowboys are sticking with three wideouts, Austin, Bryant and Williams. Witten is another key component. Ogletree is a guy who will see more time next year.

Michael (Staten Island, NY)

Calvin, with Josh Brent appearing to play very well at NT, do you think we'll see more of Ratliff at DE in the future which would seem to be his more natural position given his size and athletic ability?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:28 PM)

That's an interesting question. The team has high hopes about Brent, but I think Ratliff is going to stay at nose tackle for the time being. But the Cowboys have three defensive ends, Spears, Hatcher and Bowen, who are in the last year of their contracts and I don't think the Cowboys will keep them all.

Steve (Denton)

Do you see Church starting at strong safety next year?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:32 PM)

Possible. I like Church and he needs to get more snaps. The Cowboys have to make some serious decisons at this position for next year. Sensabaugh wants to remain with the Cowboys but not sure if the Cowboys feel the same way.

Jacob (Iowa)

Did any backup's look really good to you? and give you hope they can start one day or atleast get more playing time?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:33 PM)

Bryan McCann, Josh Brent, Victor Butler look good.

Omar (Baltimore)

How impressed is the Cowboys brass with Jason Garrett?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:34 PM)

Very. I think the first game was a positive step for Garrett, but he needs to do it over the next seven weeks. Cowboys responded to him vs. the Giants, but let's see how they respond to the Lions.

Rhett (DFW)

I think Romo is better than Kitna, but do you think Romo would've attempted or made those downfield throws, or was that Garrett's play call to go downfield? I just wanna create a little QB controversy.

Calvin Watkins
  (2:40 PM)

There is none. Kitna throws just a good a ball as Romo and the players like Kitna better. I think Garrett went after the win early on Sunday by going deep and making sure the offensive line was physical in the run game. It was a good game plan.

Barrett (Dallas)

What do you believe is the real reason that Tashard Choice is not getting to play??? Is he in Garrett's doghouse?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:41 PM)

I thought he was, but Choice is in good shape. Cowboys want to keep it with Barber and Jones for now and if they get rid of Barber, then Choice will see snaps in 2011.

Chad (Austin)

Dez Bryant = rookie of the year?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:41 PM)

Too late for that. But he should get some votes.

Paul (El Paso)

Hi Calvin, I think 2-3 more wins (Lions, Cardinals, Redskins maybe?) gets Garrett the full time job. Thoughts?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:43 PM)

Yeah, he has a good shot. But when Jerry Jones goes through the interview process, somebody might wow him, like Gruden, Fox or somebody else. Garrett has to win at least four games.

Bruce (Ft. Worth)

Did Barber talk to the media after the game? Was there an explanation? Were his teammates upset?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:44 PM)

Nope. Barber doesn't talk to the media. His teammates didn't seem upset with him.

AJ (Orlando)

if cowboys go to 3-1 in next four games, Do you think romo will return? what are his chances of return?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:46 PM)

I would sit Romo the rest of the year. The team isn't going to the postseason so why put him at risk. The key thing for me is to develop the young talent. But it's hard because Garrett is trying to win the job and wants to play the vets.

Pat (San Jose, CA)

Calvin, What did Newman mean about the defensive calls? Was this a problem with getting the defensive plays from the coaches?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:46 PM)

One of the defensive coaches, Paul, or Campo, calls in the signals and it didn't happen on a play. So, Newman and Sensabaugh got into it.

Calvin Watkins
  (2:47 PM)

Got to go guys. Take care.
