Welcome everyone to the Friday injury chat. Lots of news rolling in...let's get to your questions.
I have two tight ends to chose from to play week 11, Jacob Tamme and Antonio Gates. There was some early reports of Tamme bearly being able to walk after playing Cincinnati due to back problems that plagued him throughout the game. Any news on that? Also is there any new developments on Antonio Gates recovery and if he is going to play Monday night? I would like to play Gates if possible but I cant wait till game time to make a switch since Tamme playes on Sunday. Please advise?
Ozzy: Tamme has been a full participant in practice all week and is off the injury report (at least through Thurs)so he looks good to play. Gates still a big question mark - he only called himself 50-50. I think given the risk - and Tamme as a solid start, that's who I'd go with.
Stephania, One last update on Zach Miller please. Thank You.
Mark: He's been doing some work throughout the week and coach Tom Cable says he's on track to play. Hearing that all active players present (at least at the start) of practice today so it looks like he's headed towards playing.
Thanks for taking my question. What's the news on Austin Collie? Will he play? If so, do you think he will look the the Collie from earlier this season?
Jared: Collie is certainly doing better, having practiced fully both Weds and Thurs. As of this morning we were still waiting to hear whether he had game clearance. As you know, when returning from concussion, the caveat is always as long as there is no recurrence of symptoms, which can happen anytime. So until he plays, sure, there's some question. But I have to believe that if he's out there, he's playing like himself.
I just read the news that Torain is out, however i have one spot available between two injured players (Ryan Mathews and Clinton Portis.) Which do you think will be healthy enough to at least stay on the field? I dont wanna miss the playoffs =(.
Keary: Wow - I don't really like your choices (sorry). Portis is expected to play according to Shanahan although it's unclear whether he starts. There seems to be some debate as to who will be the feature - him or Williams - but I just can't see Portis getting that much work in his first outing back, esp when he was still having some pain/swelling as recently as last week. Mathews is iffy - and it's a Monday night game - and he will be controlled in his snaps anyway. So I suppose, you can start with Portis - if he is a last minute scratch you can at least hope for Mathews...
Ryan Matthews and Mike Sims-Walker ankle problems are they playing?
Derek: Hit on Mathews already. Sims-Walker now listed as doubtful, meaning very unlikely to play.
I saw Todd Heap was limited in practice on Thursday. Any word on his Friday practice? Do you think he'll play on Sunday?
Daniel: Have not seen his Friday practice report yet. Heap gets banged up a lot and is often limited during the week, but usually plays. I suspect he will again.
Will P. Thomas ever be back? :(
Jay: Yes - and the Saints think it could happen in the next couple of weeks. He's doing more now than he has in a while, but no team drills yet.
I remember when Peyton's bursa sac was in the news it wasn't good, how is Schaub's going to affect him this weekend? He 100% a safe bet to play as normal?
David: Good memory - but also remember that Manning had surgery on his. Schaub did not have surgery. I imagine that the hospitalization may have been so that he could receive IV antibiotics. The important thing is that he was out within 24 hours and back in practice. He said he really doesn't feel the knee when he's moving around. So I don't see any problem with the knee for this week's game.
Stephania, is Torrain looking to be out again this weekend?
James: Definitely OUT per Redskins.
Hey Stephania: As a Peyton owner, I obvioulsy want Collie to come back as soon as possible. But, what about Addai/Hart? I just don't think Brown gives the pass protection. Thanks!!
Jack: Can't see Hart playing since he hasn't done a thing in practice so far this week. Addai, who said last week that he was starting to feel better, did return to limited work Thursday. If he goes again today, then I think it could come down to a gametime decision. Colts have said before that if /when Addai is ready, they'll plug him in. Still iffy though.
What's the deal with S. Rice? Does he have to play to avoid IR or just be added to the active roster? Will he play?
Rice has to be activated (added to roster) by next week to be eligible to play at some point this season. Reports coming out this afternoon that he is expected to play. Until it happens, we'll see. But sounding like it could. Still wouldn't expect much the first week.
Cedric Benson status?
Mike: He's listed as questionable. Now I think they're leaving him the out in case his foot feels worse after today. But Benson was off Weds, limited Thurs, then full Friday. I like upward trends late in the week, but it doesn't mean he's at 100%. Need to check gametime inactives - but looks as if he'll play.
How have you gone this entire chat without talking about Malcom Floyd...is he playing?
Alex: How have you waited so long to post your question? Floyd is expected to play. I'm feeling pretty confident that he will play - and play well - given that he has been running for several days now. The Chargers are probably most optimistic about his return of all their injured guys.
Best has been very limited this week along with K. Smith. Does Jahvid still get the nod?
Bob: Yes. Schwartz basically said that this pattern is going to continue throughout the season. Limit his reps during the week to help protect the toes, but unless there's a setback from one week to the next, they expect to have him.
I was chalking the no reply up to my short-windedness, but mike y disproved that theory! Donald Driver, any news: Did he practice today, expected to start?
DJ: Yep, try to mix in different players/questions but there's not much more to it than that. Driver did practice on a limited basis today. Unclear whether he'll play or not. Think it's safe to say he's not 100% yet - Mike McCarthy made a point of saying they do not want to drag this injury out. Driver has already suffered a setback so they don't want another.
Star-phania, we heard that Hines Ward has been practicing, but has he been "cleared to play" this weekend?
Joe: Reports have indicated that Ward has been fully cleared - and he has been fully practicing all week - but I am not 100% sure he's been cleared for competition yet. Will try to find out while we're chatting.
Any idea on Tony Moeyaki? I have Gates but can risk waiting until Monday. Would you recommend I grab Kevin Boss and Drop Moeyaki for this week? Thanks
Brock: Moeaki has not practiced since suffering a concussion so do not expect him to play. Boss did not practice Thursday - always a scare - but he did return to practice Friday and is listed as probable so expect him to play.
Stephania Bad News! I need some good news.. Will Matt Hasselbeck play? If so, how effective will he be (Mike Williams owner)? Also, it seems as though Malcolm Floyd will play, but is he back at FULL strength?? Thank you!
Chris: Hasselbeck will play, with some sort of protective splint/wrap on his left wrist to protect the crack. He has been practicing all week though so that makes it less likely that he'll struggle, having had a chance to work with this. So I expect he should be pretty effective. And as far as Floyd, you don't ever know after a soft tissue injury, especially a hamstring, until a player is working at game speed under game conditions. But I will say that he's been feeling pretty good for more than a week so I have more confidence than if he was limited all of this week.
Beanie Wells....Should I start K. Williams or Mike Goodson in his place?
Clark: Wells - to me - needs to prove himself on the field before I trust him in a fantasy spot. He has been a limited participant in practice all week. Apparently the Cardinals expect him to play (and their website says he will see a lot of plays) - but we've heard that before and it hasn't come to pass. And the Chiefs D isn't soft. I'd be looking elsewhere.
I know people hate kicker questions but points are points. Is Kaeding a reliable start for SD?
If you're feeling that Kaeding's status is important, why not use your name on the question. Don't be embarrassed...Kaeding is an important contributor - and as of right now, it appears that he will be playing Monday night.
Lesean McCoy has the ribs and now a shoulder injury? Obviously he's tough, but he has to be playing through some pain. Any chance they rest him down the stretch? Is that division too close for that?
Josh: I can't see them resting him just to rest him. I don't doubt that he's playing through pain. But he's probable - and they'll play him this week.
What are your thoughts on Reggie Bush? Assuming he plays, do you think he has much value?
LJ: Interesting. I think he has some. I'm not convinced he's asked to be the primary guy all night long. There's always an adjustment returning to the field after that long.
Just pointing out you didn't really answer his question...based on your answer he still will have no idea who to start between those 3 runningbacks. This happens like everyday in these chats; people will give their "insight" without ever answering the question
Clark: Thanks for pointing this out - along with the insult. If I recommend who to start, I will most likely hear back if it was the "wrong" decision. I tend to NOT recommend who to start or sit - but I will sometimes tell you who I would start and why. And I don't make my lineup decisions on Friday for the most part. I would rather give you the info to evaluate and then you decide. Better for all of us.So, that said, Goodson will start and has no competition. But Brian St. Pierre is the QB and they face the Ravens. Williams is the healthiest of the Washington RBs but we're hearing Portis is expected to play. no one knows how much and whether he will start or not. I suspect Williams still gets the bulk of the work, but this is, after all, Mike Shanahan. So now you have all the info - and you can decide.
Stephania the beautiful!! How is Megatron?
Mike - thank you - you obviously haven't seen me this week in my state of less than great health...as for Megatron, he has been given a little rest to allow his banged up joints (shoulder/knee) a little extra recovery. But so far no indication that he's a threat to miss the game.
Another kicker question and I am not embarrassed about it. Any word on Bironas' back?
Good for you Craig: Bironas went from limited work Weds to full practice Thursday - and looks to be in line to kick this wk-end. Good thing b/c he's on my fantasy roster too.
Hello Ms. Bell, What was wrong with Gore's foot? Crossing my fingers we don't get the yealy Gore injury that makes him sit a game.Thank you and go 49'ers!
Kmac: Actually - haven't heard anything in the way of detail here. I think the fact he has been fully participating all along this week means we don't have to be concerned (at least not yet).
Starphania! This isn't injury related per se, but still a status question. Information on M. Williams (TB) seems to be all over the place, do you have any information on his status? Thanks!
Sounds like Williams will be starting - much to the disappointment of 49ers fans everywhere...
Stephania any worries about Moreno?
jw: not huge - still think with both hamstrings already injured this year that he represents some risk, but he's doing fine right now. And McDaniels insists that Moreno is going to be a bigger part of the offense.
Andre Johnson's ankle okay to go this week?
Zack: Yes - they will be going through the same routine week in and week out, but expect him to play this week (and going forward, barring a huge setback)
Any word on Brandon Marshall's hamstring?
Marc: Not yet - too soon for any sort of significant update...
OK gang - time for me to vacate the room. Couple quick updates. Be sure to note that Shockey and Thomas are OUT for the Saints, Stewart is OUT for the Panthers, Torain is OUT for the Redskins. Also Sidney Rice is going to play for the Vikings - but it will not be for the whole game. Will be interesting to see how he looks...Good luck in Week 11!!!
