Thanks for joining me for a Cowboys chat. It's a much different vibe at Valley Ranch this week. Give Jason Garrett credit for the drastic change. Let's get straight to the questions.
Tim, why don't the Cowboys pick up recently waived kicker Jeff Reed from Pittsburg since Buehler just isn't getting it done? He's been excellent for a number of years up until 2010 and he's only 31 years old. Moving out of the bad weather and horrible turf in Pittsburg will probably do wonders for him.
Reed has a reputation for being sort of a strange bird. I'm not sure the Cowboys would want to bring that guy into their locker room right now. Plus, they've invested a lot of time in David Buehler. They want to give him every opportunity to succeed. It might be different if the Cowboys were competing for a division title, but that's not the case.
Tim,With a few victories can the boyz make noise in the nfc race?
The Cowboys will have to win out to even have a chance of earning a wild card berth. That obviously isn't likely.
Do you think their is a perfect number of wins for the cowboys the rest of the year to keep jason garrett the coach?
I believe Jerry Jones when he says he doesn't have a set number of wins in mind. He wants to give Jason Garrett room to prove him right. If the Cowboys go 4-4 in the second half of the season, I firmly believe Garrett will get the job. But I don't necessarily believe that they have to win four games for Garrett to get the job.
I was wondering how Tony Romo feels about Jason taking over as HC. I have not heard anything from him. What are your thoughts? Also, i have heard that Kitna is more liked by his teammates do you think this is true?
We also haven't heard from Romo since the night he was injured. He apparently doesn't want to talk until he's playing again. There's no question that Jon Kitna is very popular in that locker room. Players don't want to get into comparing Kitna to Romo, because that would be counterproductive.
Hello Tim....Looking way to ahead question, but if this team can get a few more wins in the coming weeks, do you think they get Romo back in there for the last two games to see what they can do with Garrett running the whole show? And if they play well would that cement it in Jerry's mind? Thanks
That's exactly why I believe Romo will play again this season if his collarbone heals properly. Jerry wants a complete evaluation of Jason Garrett as the head coach. For that to happen, you have to give him a chance to coach with the franchise quarterback on the field. Plus, Jerry believes that it can be beneficial to end with a "good taste" even if the Cowboys don't make the playoffs.
when will the cowboys hire a new D-coor?
Never say never with Jerry, but you would hope that wouldn't happen until he hires a head coach. Paul Pasqualoni is the defensive coordinator the rest of the season. Jason Garrett has a ton of respect for Coach P, as he's called around these parts, so Pasqualoni would probably be the DC next season if Garrett keeps the head coach gig.
Why does the media feel they are intitled to know everything? I understand you nerds wanting to know if a player was punished by taking away playing time. That makes sense. But you don't need to know how much a player is fined, the important part that the player was punisehed, not in what way. I understand you are trying to do your job, just don't understand why you get mad when you don't get your way.
Does knowing how to spell "entitled" make me a nerd? I assume you're referring to Marion Barber's refusal to comply with Jason Garrett's dress code. That's a significant story because it's a team captain ignoring the interim coach's attempt to instill discipline to the team. It's our job to report as many details as possible and to aggressively pursue the facts. I can't speak for anybody else in the media, but I definitely wasn't mad with the way Garrett handled that situation or answered our questions Monday. In fact, I praised him for the way he dealt with the situation.
Tim - enjoy your work. Assuming JG is the coach in '11 and Andrew Luck declares, would JJ consider trading Romo for multiple picks if Luck is available when Cowboys draft? If not Romo, what other player would command multiple picks?
The Cowboys are committed to Tony Romo as the franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future. They aren't going to trade him.
Bad news, no elite OL in this years draft. Nothing worth taking in the Top 10. Whats a bigger need safety or CB? Or could we see DL? How many OL do you think we should draft this year?
OL and safety are the biggest needs. The Cowboys need to draft at least two O-linemen. Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick have proven they can be good cornerbacks. They've just had bad seasons, although Scandrick played well Sunday. Both of those guys will probably benefit from the new atmosphere here. They'll be pushed on a daily basis instead of patted on the back and told everything is going to be swell.
Tim, it was great talking to you at the Mavs game Friday night! I have followed/enjoyed your work so it was awesome to meet you. What did you think of McCann's pick-6 Sunday? With the season already in the drain, I think we should give a lot of the younger guys (Lee, McCann, Church) some serious PT so we know what we have moving forward . .
Chase, it was good to meet you. The Cowboys can't just dedicate the rest of the season to developing young players. They have to do that while trying to win games. The most important thing is Jason Garrett continuing to lay the foundation for how things will be at Valley Ranch for years to come. I firmly believe he'll get this job on a permanent basis. Lee and Church are already getting some playing time. McCann took advantage of the opportunity presented by injuries, but getting him on the field as a corner won't be a priority the rest of the season.
Can you give us some insight on Marion Barber? He hasn't been good for 2 years. Doesn't talk to the media. Didn't follow the new dress code. Is he as bad a person/player as he seems? Thanks
Barber actually talked to the media today, albeit briefly. He didn't give a good explanation for blowing off the dress code. I'm not a big fan of his, but his teammates love him. They have great respect for his work ethic and approach to the game. As far as his performance, he's clearly declining. His performance doesn't justify his contract, which is why I don't think he'll be here next year.
Where's the pass rush? Is Ware playing at the same level as last year??
Ware ranks among the NFL sack leaders, but he hasn't been as dominant as previous seasons. He also isn't getting a lot of help. Jay Ratliff, who is getting doubled a lot, only has one sack. Anthony Spencer hasn't built on his strong finish to last season.
If Jason Garrett holds the players accountable "In House"? What does it matter if he doesn't tell the media? As long as the team knows, isn't that the important thing?
Yes, that's the important thing for the Cowboys. The important thing for the media is to do our job to the best of our ability, which means trying to report as much information as possible.
Dez: Rookie of the year?
Blogged about that this morning. I think Sam Bradford will be tough to beat, but Bryant is in the running.
Would you say spears days are over here? Do you see him in miami next year?
I'd be surprised if Spears is back next year. His contract is up after this season. Jason Hatcher and Stephen Bowen are both on one-year deals too, but I think one of those guys will be the starter next season.
My nephew played opposite Bryan McCann at SMU and once told me that McCann is fast, very fast and has cover skills. If he continues to improve do you think that he can push Scanrick?
McCann also has ball skills, which we saw in training camp. But I'm not sure if he's considered a guy who can play in the slot. That's the role Scandrick plays in the nickel and dime, and it's a tough role. But the presence of a young corner with some talent on the roster might push Scandrick.
JG's is preaching rules and accountability now that he's the interim HC. Where was that accountability while he was OC? Was he deferring to Wade on preaching accountability?
I asked somebody close with Garrett that question today. I was told that Garrett respected the authority of the head coach and operated the way Wade Phillips wanted.
Folks, it's been fun, but I've gotta get back to the blog. Appreciate all the questions. Hit me up on twitter @espn_macmahon if there's anything I missed that you really want to know.
