Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Hey everyone. Glad to be here today. The league is exciting to watch right now, is it not?!! Let's get to business."I start the fire. Then I make the pizza".

D Rose (Chi Town)

How good can we be this year???

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Very good, dangerous in a 7 game series.

hugo (VA)

Is Lebron still the best player in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Not at this point, in terms of his production. But I suspect he'll get there.

Ned (Chicago)

Is Joakim Noah the best C behind Dwight Howard?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

No, probably not. But he's up there. I'm getting higher and higher on B Lopez every week too.

Adam (Dallas)

Hey David, what are your thoughts on Roddy Beaubois' potential? Is he the next Jason Terry or can he be the long term answer at PG?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Not sure he shoots it well enough to be like Terry, but he will factor in there.

Dave (Philly)

Coach Thorpe, I love hearing you on podcasts, like Russillo's the other day. I think you and Bill Simmons would be great together, especially if he ran all his ideas by you and you'd say whether or not they would work for a team. Will that happen?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Thanks, Ryen is great. I'm guessing Bill has scores of excellent choices to talk to, with a wider range of interest. Only serious fans who like the nuances of the game bother to listen/read me.

Ben (NYC)

Now with Roy with no meniscus is Nicola Batum the future?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

That would be bad for Blazers, and it's too early to tell.

Michael (Milwaukee)

Do you think the Bucks will be too cheap to trade Redd's expiring contract for an asset at the deadline?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Not if they are contending.

Ben (NYC)

Eric Bledsoe the next Jrue Holiday?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

I wrote that this summer, and I still think it. They are different players totally, but in terms of a guy who was much better as a rook than as a college player, you bet.

DP (Oakland, CA)

Do the Warriors have a shot at the playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Yes, not a great one, but they are in the mix.

Rajon Rondo (Boston)

Am I the MVP so far?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

No, Pau, Paul, D12.

Ned (Chicago)

Coach, what are you thoughts on Michael Beasley -- Averaging nearly 30 in his last 5 games. Hot streak or is he for real?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

He's been incredible on offense. I think he's got tons of talent there. Shoots it and knows how to get great shots too.

Tim (Houston)

Thorpe, I see that Kevin Martin is actually contesting shots now. Has he learned from Battier? The Rockets d got much better once Brooks got hurt, coincidence?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

As i often say, defense starts with coaching. Martin is doing what he did for Adelman when they were together in Sacto.

Dan (Miami Beach FL)

Would Miami consider a Bosh for Bynum trade? Does that deal strengthen or weaken the Lakers?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

I doubt Miami is trading Bosh anytime this year.

Mark (Toronto)

Where would you put John Wall's potential based on what you've seen compared to the other elite young guards such as Rose, Westbrook etc.?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

#1 on the list.

Michael (Miami)

Is it because of his FG% or his rebounding that Lopez impresses you more and more?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

His creativity in getting shots inside, and his ability to step outside and hit them as well.

Donnie Walsh (NYC)

I wouldn't know a good young point guard if one slapped me in the face

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Jrue Holiday would be awfully good there.

VW (new york, NY)

what's the key that kevin love posses that gets him 30 boards?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Incredible hands, and a bloodhounds nose for the ball.

Mike (Spurs Fan)

David, Are the Spurs a mirage or the real deal?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Neither, yet. But I think they can be legit contenders.

Mark (Long Beach)

Why is this group of Warriors playing such better defense?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

As previously stated, defense starts with coaching.

Rachel (Hattiesburg)

Hi David! What is the reason the Hornets are playing so well and why the drop off in minutes for Thorton? Thanks!

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Not sure why Marcus is not playing as much, but their coach is getting them to defend every night.

Venka (Pittsburgh,PA)

What will Phx do with J Richs expiring contract. He is leading scorer for them this season and with the owner going into the cost cutting mode, I feel he is best tradable asset for phx to start a rebuilding process. Eventhough they beat LA and Denver, I don't think they are going to make any noise in the playoffs as they did last season.

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Not sure where yet, but I do see a trade at some point.

Jay (SD)

Am I dreaming Darko had 13 and 12? What are the chances he throws his left shoulder out with his terrible 'shot attempts'? I do like Beasley's aggressiveness tho.

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Darko may have played his best game last night. Of course, that wasn't too hard.

Logan (MA)

Why is it that the only thing people are talking about is how the Heat are 6-4? I have not heard maybe 3 experts talk about my 8-2 CELTICS!

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Because we expected them to be very good.

Nicky Fresh (Meddy)

B.Lopez hasn't been playing well this season (42% FG, 4.6 rebounds) PER almost 5 points off last seasons. So what are you impressed by exactly?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

New coach, new system, new teammates. He's going to be a perennial all-star.

VW (new york, NY)

You ranked in your top 5 PGs: Paul, Rondo, Dwill, Nash, Curry. Fast forward FIVE years and what's that list look like

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Paul, Wall, Curry, DWill, Holiday/Jennings/Rose/Westbrook.

JD (VA)

Watching Blake Griffin play, he seems like the definition of a beast. Who's game does Griffin remind you of?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

I'm not sure yet.

Daniel (San Jose)

Hi Coach. With the coaching carousel seemingly at an end, I'd hoped for some tangible improvement from the Kings. But everything still seems to be in disarray. Greene and Thompson aren't seeing any burn and the roster seems to play confused and out of sync. Why do you think this is? And do you think Westphal is the long term solution for the Kings?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Hard for me to imagine they'd be 3-6 with the leagues easiest schedule to date. I was told they are 14-46 in 2010, is there any team worse than that since January 1?

jg2 columbus ohio [via mobile]

What will be the longterm outlook for pg Mike Conley in the NBA as compared to the young crop guards?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

He has a chance to earn his crazy contract, to be honest. He's not there now, but he could get there. I like him.

JimmyZ (PHX, AZ)

Will Gary Forbes stick for a few years? Thoughts on him so far, nice story.

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

I hope so, he's a very good player on both ends. Always tough to make it as an undrafted player, but there are plenty of guys who have.

Skip (Philly)

When will the 76ers be a Championship contender?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Not in the foreseeable future.

Mike (Oakland)

Speaking of coaching and D, what's the best way to teach 2nd graders man D?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Good luck with that. Best is to work on stance and hustle.

Alex (Toronto, On)

If you were gonna teach Bargnani how to set himself up on the weak side so he could grab a couple offensive boards a night, how would you go about doing it? And could you please come do it?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

That all comes from watching tape and learning to track balls coming off of rim.

Rajon Rondo (Boston)

You think Holiday/Jennings will be better than me in 5 years? Why?!

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

My mistake RR!! I'm typing fast. I'd probably put you 4th.

Gregory (Charlotte, NC)

Not likely you watched the Bobcats/Wolves game, but seriously, NBA refs need an upgrade. Agree?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

I did watch it, actually. Didn't notice the refs though. Nice to Augustine make such a big layup in traffic, and Tyrus has improved dramatically. Larry has been great for him, as expected.

Alex (Richmond)

Do you think the Spurs could win a championship? Also how do you feel about Ishmael Smith replacing Aaron Brooks?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Yes, it's possible if their young un's keep getting better. Brooks is the vastly superior player, as long as his attitude is good.

Ben (NYC)

Whose got bigger upside Nicolas Batum or Danilo Gallinari?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Probably Gallo.

Herman (San Antonio)

Do you think Amare regrets his decision to leave the Suns for the Knicks yet?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

I do not.

Peter (Toronto)

Thoughts on DeRozan so far. See any improvement?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Yes, building nicely from summer league. Weems too.

Mark (Toronto)

I enjoyed your article on the Gasol/Bosh relationship. Do you really think Gasol got tougher? I personally think he is what he is but his perception changed strictly due to the fact that he won.

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Without doubt he got tougher. Competed harder for important spots on the floor.

Joe (New York)

Kev Mart has the highest ts% out of the top 10 scorers in the NBA and he's also 2nd in pts per 48. Good work Coach Thorpe.

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

You can thank Houston's well spaced offense.

JR Smith (Denver, Co)

Glad you were not late for this chat or you would have been benched, believe me sir!

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Funny!!

Jason J (NYC)

Thorpe - Just wanted to say you are by far my favorite basketball analyst to read and ask how define "best basketball player"? LeBron didn't become a worse player over the summer, did he? Isn't he still the best player just in a system that underutilizes him?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

We have to make a distinction between best player overall, and the guy who's currently playing the best over a game, a week, or a month. Tiger was the best player in the world for years, but was he the best every week? Not remotely. This is a problem with Kobe nation. Is he the best player over the course of a game or a week, of course. Over a season, never.

Cavaliers (Cleveland OH)

Does the world have to admit we might have been a little better than people gave us credit for yet?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Didnt you get Munsoned by the Kings?

Craig (Trenton, NJ)

Derrick Favors has shown some some glimpses of what a dominant force he can be on the court. What are your thoughts on him for the present/future?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

I never saw his talent in all the games I saw this summer and in October. I see it now. He's going to be very good.

Royce (NYC)

At some point, D'Antoni HAS to give Anthony Randolph some legit PT, right?...he's way too talented to just waste away on the bench...thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

One would think, yes.

Nick (Italy)

Hi David!"At the NBA border": Paul Harris Vs. Joe Alexander: one of the two could one day average more than 5MPG in the league?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Negative. Joe's case is tragic. Another example of how you don't want a team to be in charge of developing a guy who needs lots of work.

Chris (NB)

Whats for lunch? Im getting hungry

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Green beans and brown rice, plus some almonds.

Mark (Toronto)

I watch a lot of basketball and it never stops amazing me how many players stand competely vertical when they are on the weak side. Do they not know there man takes an extra step into the paint when they do it? The exception being Boston whose players are in an athletic stance all the time. Is it coaching?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Of course.

Mike (Chicago)

Who should be more upset right now that the contract got matched this offseason: the Bulls that still have a hole at SG or JJ Redick who is only averaging 16.7 mpg this month?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

JJ has been Adam Morrison bad. It's odd.

davjd (montreal)

can the raptors reach .500 mark? all their losses are caused by of the lack of late 4th quarter closers.

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Very doubtful.

krav (philly)

Are you an MMA fan? Spectacular athletes, driven, respectful of the art and growing faster than any pro sport.

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Never watched a second of it, except for the guy who was on "Entourage" once.

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Sorry-I keep getting kicked out of my own chat room!!

Sean (Utah)

What do you make of Fessenko's improvement this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Excellent in conditioning and defense, none on offense.

Ryan (NY)

You seem to rank Rose very low on all PG projections, is it because he is more of a SG than a PG?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

I'm more prone to love pure pg's, but Rose is terrific in his own way. Listen, there are lots of great pg's in the league, not everyone can be top 5.

Doug (New York)

What do you think of Mozgov?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Not rebounding nearly enough.

Mike (St. Paul, MN)

It looks like Johnny Flynn might be back tomorrow for the Wolves-Clippers game. What do you think he brings to this team? I'm worried about his perimeter D.

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

I'm afraid he'll be a downgrade to Ridnour, and actually, the Wolves may have held on last night of Gaines had been left in.

JJ (Houston )

Ben Gordon is painfully underused in Detroit. Do they have any plans or offers to move Rip Hamilton?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

I'm guessing yes.

JJ (Houston )

How do you feel about Pistons starting Austin Daye at PF? Does he have a promising outlook?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Not at pf, I wouldn't think.

Sean (Lexington)

No question, just wanted to say I am loving the Kingpin Munsoned reference. Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Thanks for paying attention Sean.

Trail (Blazer)

Why did we pick Oden over Durant?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Because "big guys have to get drafted first". I didn't agree then, and I don't now.

Jones (Michigan )

Why has Demarcus Cousins been struggling so far? Are reports about his attitude true?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Struggling is too strong a word. He's playing fine, for the most part. True? Did you not see him play last year? There is no switch you can flip to make someone grow up. It takes time. But I wish he'd hurry up.

Terry (NYC)

How terrible a coach is Mike D'Antoni? Isiah! Isiah!

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Things are bad in NYC.

Darko Milicic (Minnesota)

I'm not as terrible as I look, am I?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

You are only as bad as you are playing.

Ryan (NY)

I agree Rose is not a PURE PG like DWill, CP3 and Wall, however I prefer my stars to have that "killer" instinct to score and take the last shot, not look to set up others.

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Nothing wrong with that!!

Az (Chicago,IL)

You have to remember Rose is scoring out of necessity. When Boozer comes back you will see his Pts go down and his Assts go wa up. Plus remember his performance against Boston in 09 and Cleveland in 10.

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

For the record, I have no issue with Rose, or his scoring. I don't think he see's the game as good as some of the other guys. Still, he's an all-star and a great teammate.

Joe (New York)

Agree or disagree. Reke is overrated.

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Depends on who's rating him. If you think he's the next Bron or Wade, you are overrating him. If you think he's better off coming off the bench as a pure scorer, you are underrating him.

Art Vandelay (NY)

Is this the year that Tyrus Thomas stops teasing us and takes it to the next level? Seems like all he needs right now is a few more minutes per game.

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Agreed.

Ben (NYC)

Is Blatche ever going to figure out he should hit the glass?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Honestly, he's the laziest great talent guy in the league. The single worst defensive player I've seen so far this year, but extremely hard to guard on offense.

Nick (Wisconsin)

I agree that Rose may not "see the game" as players like Nash, Rondo, CP3 or DWill do, but have you been impressed with his play-making ability this year, WITHOUT Boozer? I think it has been noticeably better this year.

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Agreed!

Marc (Calgary)

Who is the worst big-man rebounder in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

My first guess would be Ryan Hollins. Can someone look up rebound rate for centers on our site?

JD (VA)

Why hasn't Evan Turner's game translated to the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Seems that teams are forcing him to shoot, and he's not the guy with the ball in his hands at all times.

Enrique (Chi)

I just wanted to give you your props! In one of your chats WAY BACK WHEN, you said that Noah was a "starting center on a championship caliber squad"! You my firend, have a great eye for talent. Did you ever think about becoming a GM?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Thanks, but believe me, that was easy to see. I'm far prouder of the guys like Haslem, Forbes, and Reggie Williams who made the league after going undrafted. No, I have no thoughts of being on the team side, save an extremely unlikely possibility or two. I have a great job(jobs) already.

Craig (Trenton, NJ)

What are your playoff predictions from 1-8 for both conferences?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Really Craig? Try your Magic 8 ball. Ask me again in March.

darius (evansville in)

who is the front runner for rookie of the year wall or griffin

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Tied.

Jason (Vancouver)

The worst big-man rebounder in the NBA is Andrea Bargnani, who also happens to be the worst help defender in the NBA too.

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

He's in the bottom 5 for sure.

Tim (Montreal)

David, you were right on about Ryan Hollins. Next worst five: Solomon Jones, Ronny Turiaf, Thabeet and Andrea Bargnani.

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Nice!!

Carter (Chicago)

Sorry, we are kind in love with D-Rose? So anything less than he will be the best of all time is slap in the face.. Can you accept this apology?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Yes I can. He's easy to love.

JR (SLC)

What makes Paul Milsap so good. He is undersized and nor athletic, but he is really good.

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

When you can't explain how the sum is greater than the parts, it's called talent.

Az (Chicago,IL)

Who has the highest PER out of this group: Garnett, Odom, Bosh, David West and Taj Gibson.....Answer is Taj Gibson. I know it's early but do you think Taj ever projects to be an all star?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

No i do not, but he's a very good player. I'm impressed with his poise and skills.

Jerry (Texas)

Looking back at the 07 draft, I am glad the Bulls picked Noah, imagine the team now with Spencer Hawes at center.

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Or imagine the Kings said yes to the proposed Noah for Hawes straight up that I heard about from a friend in Chicago. Alas, they didn't.

Matt Geiger (Philly)

Do you remember watching me play too?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Since you were 15, Mattie.

Chris (Cali)

Is there anything you can't actually teach? Meaning, can you teach hustle, desire, work ethic?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Pretty much no, other than height.

Tom (chicago)

When the sum is less than the parts its called Luol Deng!

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

He's been good this year, not as good as I expected.

Jason J (NYC)

"When you can't explain how the sum is greater than the parts, it's called talent." -- Great line.

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Thanks Jason. Size, speed, skills-those are more easily identifiable. It's the production that counts.

Marcin Gortat (Orlando)

Give me 35 minutes per game, I'll give you a double double!

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

I think you are the key guy in a big trade before February.

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Time's up. Thanks everyone. Remember, I'm at David B. Thorpe on Facebook and @coachthorpe on twitter. Feel free to reach out to me. Have a great week. Be safe.
