OK. Back for another week of mavs questions and answers. Let's get to it
Chuck! How are the Mavs going to get rid of my backup--Brendan Haywood--so I can become the true starter? His contract is ridiculous, but surely there are some other teams in need of a solid center (I'm looking at you Portland). Do we have any chance of getting rid of him, or will I be forced to leave during free agency because my team falsely committed too much money to a mediocre, less-talented player?
First off, Tyson, you ARE the true starting center of this team. But you know Haywood is a necessity because there will be games where you will be in foul trouble and you still want to have a credible big behind you. Haywood has been wildly up and down so far, but the fact that the Mavericks have someone like him allows Carlisle to not have to play Dirk at the 5 when he goes to the small lineup. Makes for a better defensive team, and thus, a better team in the long run. And as far as the future, worry about what you can control now. And enjoy the ride. You're playing great
It still seems like only Dirk and Terry can be relied on hit shots consistently from outside. Do you see the team making a move for a better outside shooter before the deadline?
There's no doubt those two are the best the Mavericks have. But Kidd has become a reliable three point shooter, and given that's where the overwhelming majority of his shots come from, that's really important. Right now, they're 7-3, with two of those losses by one and two points. They're on pace for a 57 win season, I don't think they're ready to do anything
The mavs are spending the money to try to win a chmapionship at this moment. Since we all know there about one big move away from being able to seriously compete for that championship. What type of move do you see them making this year?
No doubt they are in it to win it. That's been the case every year. I don't see them making a major move unless it's for someone who wants Butler's expiring contract. But is there anyone on a bad team that is ready to take that on and give you someone of quality? I don't think so. Guys like Iguodala aren't getting it done in Philly. Why do you think it will be any better here.
In addition, we have still yet to see what this team will look like when Roddy Beaubois plays with it. that might be the only add you really need. solves the outside shooting problem, that was asked about earlier. Solves the slasher issue that would have been nice to have in that last shot situation last night.
Will charlotte be willing to trade stephen jackson? I would trade him for caron, he played for Carlisle before. What do you think?
Larry Brown falls in and out of love with players as much as anyone, so I guess it's possible. But as much as Jackson can give a team an edge, he invariably gets crossways with his coach. Mavs have really good chemistry. I think Jackson would mess it up.
Dirk and David West have a real rivalry with one another. It probably foes back to the 08 playoffs when West put a hand to Dirk's face, and Dirk walked away. West thinks he can get under Dirk's skin, and last night, at least for a bit, he did. Yes, any player should keep his composure better than dirk did for that time last night, but he's hardly the only one it's ever happened to. And lest we forget, the moment Dirk left the game is when the Hornets went on a 13-0 run that got them control of the game. When he came back, neither Jason Smith, nor West could guard him.
JJ hasn't shot the three pointer well all year, not just last night. 4-27 is awful. But JJ's shooting was NOT the reason this team lost. Getting outscored 33-17 turning it over seven times in the 3rd quarter was a lot more important. Having said that, I was surprised when Dirk gave up a wide open look to pass it back out for a JJ three late in the game.
He will get his minutes spoon feed, the way Roddy's were last year. Love what Jones can bring to the table at some point, but right now, he's just not better than the guys in front of him.
When Roddy does return, will he return as a reserve to begin with?
I would think so, but Rick Carlisle hasn't consulted me on that. And probably won't
With the Mavs playing pretty well with this team even though its early in the season. What kind of move, if any, will we make before the deadline and who is most likely to be trade and traded for? Thanks
There is simply no way to know what the Mavericks might be looking at; no way to know what deal might fall into their lap. I think they really like their team a bunch right now, and if Haywood would give them more consistent play behind Chandler, I think they'd like it even more. And again, that's not even having Roddy around
Zero tolerance was never going to be completely enforced. I think, however, there has been a notable reduction in the amount of whining that has taken place in the first two weeks of the season. No doubt guys like Paul and Tim Duncan are serial whiners that get away with a lot, but I think it's the overt action and not necessarily the words that will get you in trouble. Unless you say to many of them and/or the wrong ones
The mavs have been bounced from the playoffs the last 2 yrs because of the athletic guards for the opposition. Do you think its going to be any different this year? Since we know how many good guards are out there.
I think they got bounced from the playoffs last year because George Hill could shoot three's. Not because Ginobili overran them game after game. I think their improved defense at the back with Chandler will prevent most of those guys from getting to the rim and finishing the way they have against the Mavericks in the past
That's a wrap for today. Thanks for the great questions. We'll visit again in two weeks. Have a great Thanksgiving
