Welcome to another Monday chat. Let's get with it.
What's this I'm hearing about Jerry shelling out huge money for an all star coaching staff to work with Garrett next year?
Haven't heard that. He's already made Garrett the highest paid offensive coach in the NFL at $3.5 million a season. Hudson Houck is the highest paid offensive line coach at $1 million a season. Not sure if Jerry Jones wants to do any more than that going forward. I would think he may not keep all the assistants for next season.
Calvinnnnnnnnnnnn love your works....wondering why cowboys are changing mind to bring back ROMO this season?
The Cowboys were always planning on Romo returning. It's just that his return won't happen until mid-to-late December. Romo will return unless he has a setback.
As most people have identified, the Cowboys have done a better job with zone defense. Does this mean that the secondary is less of a problem than once claimed, or is it a first-round need?
It's still a need. I think the offensive line is more of a need, they need to find one in the first round no question, but finding a safety in the second or third round is important. They need one. A corner is another position of need. Cowboys have to find some athletic players who can make plays on the ball.
Your thoughts on Dez being called "The Adrian Peterson of WRs"?
Dez is a fantastic player who is still learning the game. He's getting better at it every week. But he's not at AllDay territory yet.
How come all of the sudden the offense is clicking. How come JG couldn't that earlier with Wade?
Good question, Byron.Part of it is the Cowboys trailed in some of these games so they were forced to throw. However, I think they could have run the ball a little more to help the passing game. Garrett is attacking defenses more with screens, deep balls and pounding the running game than he did earlier in the season.Another key is the Cowboys ability to force turnovers on defense to give the offense a short field. The special teams play has also gotten better, McCann's punt return for a score, takes pressure off the offense. A lot of these things didn't happen under Phillips in 2010.
The Cowboys looked like they were ready to wilt and give up yesterday before McCann's big play. Hold off on the Hail Garrett chants until at least Friday.
I agree. The Cowboys have a big stretch of games upcoming with New Orleans, Indy, Philly and Washington. The Cowboys easily could run into a three-game losing streak before the Redskins game.
Both Barber and Roy are gone next year right? How much does that save us?
Roy Williams might return next season. Barber I doubt it.Now if there is a salary cap, here are Williams' and Barber's cap numbers for 2011. Barber cap number of $6.7 million. His base salary for next year is $4.2 million. He's due a $500,000 roster bonus. Williams cap number is $9.4 million with a base salary of $5.1 million.
Alan Ball, Gerlad Sensbaugh and Anthony Spencer have all struggled this season. Do you see any of them keeping their starting spot for next year, or even being on the team?
I think Spencer has gotten better as the season progressed. He's not making as many plays as he did last year down the stretch but we'll see.I doubt if Sensabaugh returns. He's struggled at times at strong safety and yet he wants a long-term contract from the team. Not sure if the team feels the same way.Ball has also struggled at free safety. He may return as a backup, but like Sensabaugh, he's a free agent. There could be better players on the market and in the draft.
What free agents do you see the Cowboys resigning for next season? Spears? Bowen? Hatcher? Sensbaugh?
Spears might come back at a reduced salary. Bowen is somebody the team needs to lock up.Hatcher might get let go, but he's a solid contributor. You can't keep all three ends, Spears if he comes back for lower money than what he expects, might be gone.Sensabaugh, I believe, the team will let test the market.
What are your feelings on Sean Lee after his most played game to date for the Cowboys?
I've been waiting on Sean Lee to make something happen this season and he finally did. He forced a fumble yesterday and that might get him more snaps. He's struggled a bit more than I expected. He's smart, but I still take Brooking and James right now.
Calvin, Nice comback by the Cowboys yesterday but the O line, in particular Davis and Colombo, was just brutal again. Please tell me those 2 and hopefully Gurode will be gone next year.
There will be some changes to the offensive line in 2011. Not sure who goes, but Kyle Kosier is in the last year of his deal, so the team has to make a decision on whether or not to offer him a new deal.In terms of the other four, Doug Free has played well at left tackle. He stays.Leonard Davis was benched earlier this season but has played OK after that. I think Biggie returns. Marc Colombo is a questionmark with those knees of his.Andre Gurode might stay one more year, unless the team thinks Phil Costa is ready to step in and play center.
Whats up with Ware? Its he getting double alot? Is the conservative defense effecting him? Nice to see Lee make some plays.
Ware got doubled a lot yesterday, more so than in the last few weeks. Ware makes more plays than you think because when he is taking on two blockers it opens the door for somebody else. And other times run plays don't go his side, so he's good at making those tackles from the backside. Ware is having a good season, not as good as last year, but solid.
What Record do you think that the Dallas Cowboys will finish the Season With?
Chris,That's a tough question. If Wade Phillips is still the coach, the Cowboys might go 1-15 or 3-13.Under Garrett, the team now has hopes for a 6-10 finish.
barbershop squabble here, help needed. Out of Choice, Barber and Felix I say Barber still should be the guy for his toughness. What say you Calvin?
Cedric,Love barbershop talk. Choice is the complete back.Jones is the third-down change of pace back.Barber is the tough, grind it out back. I think Choice should start over Barber and Jones to be honest with you.
Calvin, what should we honestly make of McCann? I mean, the big plays are phenomenal, but how do you assess him overall? Based on all the praise you'd think he'd be a starter next year.
Jay Ratliff said it best regarding McCann. Smart, doesn't play like a rookie, and conducts himself as a professional.McCann is handling the praise well and he was patient when he was on the practice squad waiting for a chance. Now he's got one and is doing a good job at it.
Is Calvin Hill still with the Cowboys org.
Yes, in player development. He comes to most home and away games. Still a fixture at Valley Ranch.
Calvin, can the boyz make noise to be mentioned in the nfc?
No. Best Cowboys can do is 6-10.
Is it just me or was Hatcher very impressive on Sunday? What's his potential in your mind?
Cowboys like Hatcher's pass rush abilities, but injuries have stunted his progress. When it was time for a new defensive end, with spears out, Hatcher was outtoo and the team went to Stephen Bowen.Hatcher has been a consistent performer, not sure if the Cowboys coaches believe he has a long-term future.
Calvin, why the loss of looks to Dez on Sunday? He's a BEAST.
He's got to get open and Jason Witten was getting a few more touches yesterday and the Cowboys ran the ball better so that limited what Bryant could do.
what record does Garrett need to obtain to get the job as head coach in the off season?
Well, he's 2-0 now. Say he wins four games. That would make him 4-4. Do you keep him?
If Roy doesn't come back, who steps up as the #3 receiver? Does someone from outside get brought in, or are we basically looking at Hurd vs. Ogletree in preseason?
Not sure if Hurd comes back next year. He wants to play receiver full-time and I'm not sure if the organization views him that way. Ogletree can't get on the field and he might not return. Cowboys have some serious issues at this position behind Dez, Miles and possibly Roy.
If Kitna goes .500 is there a chance of a QB controversy? I read Roy W's comments and he seems to favor Kitna but he talks to much off the field.
Nope. Tony Romo is the starting quarterback of this team. Jon Kitna isn't trying to win the job over Romo. The question you should ask yourself is should the Cowboys draft a quarterback next year?
Guys thanks for the time.
