Hey all, sorry for being late - tech issues on my end, will make it up and stay late. Let's get going...
What do you think about Vincent Jackson this week? Start him over inconsistent players like Boldin or Forte?
With Crayton getting injured and Gates' serious injuries likely to persist I would consider Jackson over Boldin, who will likely face Tampa's Talib and has had, as you said, an inconsistent season.
Jim. assuming that Shockey sits this week is Jimmy Graham worth starting over Dustin Keller or Aaron Hernandez ?
Keller's decline in production has been strange, but I guess with Sanchez having confidence to go vertical and the chemistry he's developed with his wideouts that he's taken a backseat in the progression order. Graham is a risky play, as any New Orleans target not named Colston is, but he's a former hoop player with nice upside and athleticism. I'd roll the dice, it's not like Hernandez has been stellar of late and Keller is somewhat a tertiary option now.
Sit TO against the Jets this week for Randy Moss or Sidney Rice?
No dice on getting Moss in there - he hasn't produced at a usable clip in over a month and if he couldn't excel with Favre how is he going to do with Rusty Smith? I'd stick with TO over Rice as well, although it's not a bad consideration. Revis Island is in effect, but I'm not convinced TO won't be able to get some reprieve from him by moving around.
I read that Clinton Portis just had some swelling in his groin. Going forward...does he have more value than either Stewart or Maurice Morris?
The Wash Post's Jason Reid just wrote a few minutes ago that Portis' MRI came up relatively clean in that there was no new damage, but lingering inflammation is present. I would rather have Morris, for sure, as he's likely to be in line for all of the work, however limited that would be - with Best likely out. Stewart bears more value as well, if only for a possible few late starts.
Have to sit Benson this week, right? Facing the Jets and it's a short week.
Benson actually looked really good this past Sunday, then again, Gayle Sayers could drop a buck twenty on Buffalo right now, in his sixties. That said - purely contextual question Marc, I would sit him if I had better matchups in tow. Point being, Benson is a low-end #2 this week, possibly deflated enough to be in the flex range.
Woodhead or the Law Firm this week?
Woodhead seems to have the safer baseline, in that he's involved more as a total yards threat, while BJGE has the higher scoring potential. I'd prefer Woodhead, who has embedded himself as a fixture in the short passing game and will see more work considering his efficient work of late.
DMC's bad game: product of bad matchup, or overrated player? I thought he might have been matchup-proof. I stand corrected. DMC over LT the rest of the way?
I'm not sure anyone is matchup proof against the Steelers, with the only productive tailbacks so far against them this year have done so with lots of receptions or the rare short touchdown. I'd stick with DMC over LT, don't let this one game deter you.
Who are you more optimistic about: Hakeem Nicks or Kenny Britt?
Considering that both will be playoff starts and in crucial situations I'd rather have the one with the better QB situation, and that is clearly not the Rusty Smith/Kerry Collins side.
Am I crazy for wanted to start Nate Washington over Holmes this week? Can he repeat what Holmes did against Houston last week?
The Bengals are down to five healthy defensive backs, total - and have struggled to get their talented tandem of corners healthy at the same time all season. Again, I'd stick with the better QB situation nearly every time when considering comparable wideouts - meaning that an effective Sanchez over Rusty Smith makes sense. I know that Smith hooked up with Nate for a long one, but Holmes is simply a star these past three weeks.
Being a Tolbert owner is there anyway the Chargers wake up and realize he is the better of their two running backs and give him the starting job?
I think they sort of have, at least in the sense that Tolbert gets the majority of the consequential work regardless of Mathew's status. I've said it before, and Mathews owners haven't like it, but this appears to be a lost season from a real and fantasy perspective for Mathews, just hasn't been and likely won't be "right" all season.
Who will Keiland Williams outscore this coming week: Peyton Hillis, Ray Rice, L. Tomlinson, Ben Jarvus Green Ellis, LG Blount?
Blount and the Firm.
you have to sit fred jackson against the steelers defense despite how well jackson has been playing, right?
I would think so, superior talents to Jackson have been subdued by the Steelers.
Is Forte against a weak Eagles running D a better option than DJax against a strong Bears passing D? The last two games it seems like DJax gets a few tosses early and then disappears
The Philly rush defense has struggled this year as their lack of size at defensive tackle is catching up with them, really their whole d-line rotation is on the small side. That said, they curbed the 5th best rushing attack last week ably and it's not as if the Chicago running game has been a force. I think with the series of blitzes coming Cutler's way I'd expect Forte to be better utilized as a blocker, screen target and leak out valve - meaning, a solid PPR option with not much upside on the ground. That said, I'd prefer Jackson - despite the lack of big numbers - Vick is looking his way deep often and they've been close to connecting several times. Forte safer downside/baseline - as in 80 total yards with some nice reception numbers, while Jackson is clearly a boom/bust option. I just prefer to roll the dice on the upside in these crucial late weeks.
Have WAY too many QBs on my roster after Romo injury...Eli, Romo, Hill
With these options, outside of a keeper league, I see no reason to hold onto Romo. Sure, we've all heard about him throwing the ball, but his recent tests showed that he still has a fracture and honestly there's just too much time to wait with the fantasy playoffs looming. Cut bait, and toggle the matchups - you have a nice group of arms here to work with.
To follow up on Chris from Tampa's question on F. Jackson: How about in a PPR league (0.5 per carry and 1.0 per reception)? Woodhead and Blount are my other two options with the Law Firm and Peyton Hillis already starting.
With rewards for work Jackson gets a boost, as he's been getting steady work for several weeks now in a season with few feature backs.
What kind of numbers do you expect Sid Rice to put up on the horrendous (and banged up) Redskins secondary this week? Enough to bench Tampa Mike (at Bal) for him in a PPR?
I think Rice could do well, Favre was looking his way and he seemed to respond well to the attention. In your case, however, I'm not benching Williams, who faces a fallible Baltimore secondary and Freeman gets the kid the ball, especially in the red zone. Rice is nice, but Williams is one of the most consistent, if unspectacular, options at the position.
Hi Jim, Pick a side in this trade. Mike Wallace/Vincent Jackson or Andre Johnson?
The Wallace/Jackson side is stronger in terms of total production that can be expected - it makes a lot of sense if the Johnson seller is in need of two starters. Wallace has been a stud lately, and Jackson has the potential to be, Johnson, meanwhile - is mired in injury and Schaub's down season.
I know you play your best options, but do I roll with R.Wayne and Tamme if playing the guy with Manning? Best case scenario I'm looking for a push right?
Most league's dole out a higher reward for receiving yards and even receiving touchdowns, right? So that would make having Manning's top targets better for you, and either way, you should be playing them.
Thoughts on Garcon? Disappointing, but injuries and opportunity keep me playing him. Do I need to cut bait and start someone like Woodhead or Branch over him?
Garcon is simply raw. Last season he was hauling in the deep ball effectively but it's clear that he's not a refined product just yet, which is fine career-wise, but doesn't bode well for this season. I'd look to Woodhead; a safe bet for 12-15 touches and a nice matchup to go with it.
Would you start the Browns D this week???
I am in a few leagues - I often just stream my defenses if I don't have the rare elite defense. Carolina is one of the safest bets to rack up defensive numbers against, just a limited and sloppy offense.
I will have ____________ total yards on ________ catches with __________ touchdowns on Thanksgiving day.
90 / 5 / 1 - I'm a Bush apologist, and I think they waited for him to be truly healthy - with this being a solid outing for him.
Reggie Bush (Dal) or Keiland (Min) in a PPR?
Bush, I really like Keiland, but think that game turns into a veteran QB battle in the air somewhat given how bad the opposing secondaries have played.
Getting close to pig out day! Dez or Lawfirm for flex this week?
Dez is one the best wideouts in the league, or at least most talented. The kid is a freak, and this isn't hyperbole, he's nuts on tape. I think that's an answer somehow.
True or False: I outscore Fred Jackson from now through the end of the season?
It's close, but I'd probably say true - much higher potential for touchdowns on a weekly basis. Jackson has been great lately, and he'll continue to get work, but Jones gets goal line work on the regular, while Jackson's visits to the end zone are a new element to his resume.
Jim, getting back to the Colts passing game ... what are your thoughts on Blair White going forward?
Depends on Collie, and also just the context of the game. Peyton is a star-maker in that he can turn ancillary wideouts into studs with his attention. I think having a tempered take is wise - that he's a plug-in #3 if Collie is assuredly out and a flex/bench commodity otherwise until we see some consistent play and durability from The Project.
Will Mike Goodson continue his hot streak?
It's likely that he'll keep getting the work, and that's a rarity. Going forward depends on Stewart's health, and possibly even Sutton. I like him as a flex with the gig, and we'll see how long he has it to himself.
I hate Thomas Jones. I'm so much better and it's really not close. He's old and should be hurt by now.
We understand your angst Jamaal - people forget the extra A often and Thomas Jones is in your way. More work is deserved, but seemingly can't be expected given how the work has been handed out.
Jonathan Stewart have any value left? What happened to him?
Not sure what happened in Carolina in general. I mean, it's not a vastly different roster than last season and both backs were dominant at times. A wash of a season I suppose. One of the least valuable fantasy resources I can remember in terms of the Carolina roster. Seems like Goodson might be the bright spot, which is scary.
So now I'm confused....Bow or Dez???
I just mean that Dez is not your typical rookie wideout - Kitna loves him and gets him the looks to be consistent. Bowe, meanwhile, is the hottest commodity at the position, possibly in all of fantasy. Nice to have both, but Bowe is tops here.
Am I droppable? and is droppable even a word?
We make up words all the time in fantasy - and if you need roster space, I would say that he is droppable, or cuttable, or whatever word we want to craft. He's injured, it's a lingering injury that has gotten worse, and he's on the worst rushing offense in the league.
What are your thoughts on Moreno or Tolbert for the playoff run. I have the opportunity to acquire both but Tolbert's the much cheaper of the two.
I prefer Moreno, honestly, he just appears to have that burst back that we've been waiting for. Tolbert is also a solid option. Like you said - depends on the price you are willing to pay, that clearly factors in. If it's a marginal difference in what you give, go with Moreno.
With Gates getting the DNP last night, was that a sign they want him fully healthy for the future, or that is injury will bother him all year?
His injury is serious enough to consider that we might not see him again, and if we do, given that he's a gamer, I'm not sure we are actually going to see his expected production. Just a disastrous position at the top end, not sure I've ever seen such a season where the elites at a position go down like this.
Which Skins RB would you want going forward?
The one they draft this April? But really, it would be Williams, but I don't really expect much out of this backfield unless Williams gets the gig with no comp - meaning Torain and Portis are truly out of the picture, which is unlikely.
Jim McCormick is droppable from ESPN fantasy chat!!
Thanks Nate, and somehow you've endured the whole chat. I like to be more lively in here, but this is Week 12, these dudes are serious about their teams, not as many fun questions or topics. This is serious nerdery.
Have you heard if there is any chance that Tebow will get some reps at the end of the season and possibly even be the starting QB for the Broncoes for the 2011 season?
Not from a legitimate source, no. I've heard rumblings, but dismissing a potential 5K QB doesn't make a ton of sense. I think the development goal would be Tebow in '12, but that's just my assumption. I think Orton is under center next fall (hopefully, as in hopefully there's football).
Is Randy McMichael is solid pickup after what you said about Gates?
I think so, at least in terms of being a top-10 consideration at the position. I'm no doctor, but just from reading about Gates and even hearing him describe it himself - saying that it feels like walking on glass, it just appears that it's a serious enough injury to limit him for the duration.
Can I trust a weaponless Eli this week??? Would you trust Schaub or Cassel over him?
Danny gets the posted 233 times award - not commonly given out but then again, not many people would do that. I would play Eli still, there's enough depth there to make something happen and Jacksonville remains suspect to the pass.
Hello Jim, I consider to pick up two guys from seven players: Nate Washington, Nate Burleson, Jabar Gaffney, Deion Branch, Derek Hagan, Brandon Gibson or Laurent Robinson
The old 2 for 7 routine, I get where you are going with this Steve. I'd get Gibson and Nate B. in there this week
Jim you always stay late... MUCH APPRECIATED!! Is S. Rice worth a start over Marshall, Holmes or Austin this week? I need to start two them. How do you rank those four for this week and the rest of the year?
Except last week - where I cut out three minutes early and received some hate mail, or more like salty mail, for cutting out early. But hey, I'm not complaining. I would consider Rice over Marshall - Austin possibly as well but the big stage and a nice enough matchup leads me to trust him this week - so it's Marshall that I would swap out for Rice. Forget Marshall's name and reputation and draft price - he's been pedestrian and his offense is anemic.
Would you cut Randy Moss at this point or just leave him rot on the bench? I'd rather carry a 2nd kicker than Moss at this point.
Harry the Hat - I am very tempted to do the same thing but for some reason I can't click that drop button on him. Sad, but true, I'm stuck with the guy, or at least until later into the fantasy playoffs when it won't matter as much. He's going to rot, it seems.
Only thing worse than starting Moss = cut him and have him beat you in the playoffs...
Does Sidney Rice have keeper potential for cheap salary?
Sure he does, he's young and recovered well (so far) from a serious injury. No matter who is behind center next year, Jackson or some import, he should be their top target.
Jim, have you discussed Hicks' injury? Does it help or hurt Manningham?
It helps Mario - in that Eli generally likes to lock in on his top one or two targets, and he's already done so with Mario in Smith's wake, so even more attention could be headed his way (both from the defense and from Eli).
How bad can Rusty Smith be? He knows how to throw a spiral and he's facing the Texans. That has to be good for 20 pts, right?
You would hope so, but the kid put some ducks up there last week, got lucky not having several picked off. But in an emergency in a considerably deep league (or 2QB setting)? It's not bad to face the worst secondary in years.
Thanks everyone for the thousands of questions. Have a great Turkey Day and enjoy the football, food, family and friends (in that order). Any additional thoughts or questions - hit me up @JMcCormickESPN on Twitter. And again, have a great holiday.
