Happy Thanksgiving week everybody. I plan to stuff myself with stuffing and overload on football. So another racing season is in the books. What's your take?
How is it possible for Kevin Conway not to have won the worst debut season award in your column? A grand total of two top twenty finishes, missed 8 races, and sometimes only beating the start and parkers? Give Danica a break...Kevin Conway had the worst rookie season.
Conway didn't have the equipment that DP had, not even close. Expectations were much higher for DP. But it's funny with Danica. I can't win. If I praise, half of the people are mad. If I don't, the other half are mad. But she sure gets people riled up.
Hi Terry, you know how all season Harvick threw his pit crew and team under the bus for mistakes? Since he couldn't blame them for pit road speeding is that why he blamed NASCAR?
I have yet to see a driver get caught speeding on pit road who said NASCAR got it right.
Do you think Harvick's meltdown and choking after the pit road speeding penalty-plus hitting that poor #83 crew guy-cost him the championship?
Absolutely not. Even if he has won, JJ still would have won the title by finising second. But the pit-road deal kept Kevin from finishing ahead of Hamlin in the season standings.
Since almost everyone predicted #48 to win the championship, that was not a supprisiing accomplishment. So do you rate Rowdy's 3 Bristol wins in the same weekend as the biggest accomplishment of the NASCAR season?
No, No, Triple No. Kyle being Master of the Minors does not impress me. Not in the least.
Hi Terry, Happy Thanksgiving week! When will the sprint series drivers used the newly designed models that the nationwide series had debuted in Daytona?
Not next season. A new Cup model is coming in 2013. But the Cup cars will have a new nose next year, much sleeker looking than the current splitter. It won't have any splitter braces.
Hi Terry, if VW enters NASCAR for '12 would you expect them to pull an Everham like Dodge did and hire Chad Knaus or go with Penske and get Roger to switch manufacturers?
Hard to say, but it won't be in 2012. It will take several years for VW to get up to speed and be ready to compete. More like 2013 when the new car comes out, or maybe even 2014.
Terry - Do you see a big shake up coming at HMS. With the whole over the wall crew of the 48 being replaced. Could the only sure thing be Knaus and Jimmie paired together ?
Yes, but that's nothing new. Crew guys move around quite a bit. Of the 7 guys who were on the 48 crew before the swap in Texas, only 2 had been with JJ all four championshiup years before this one.
QUESTION TO TERRY BLOUNT AT 2.25 PM HI TERRY HOW YOU THINK LOTUS WIILL DO IN IRL OR BACK TO F1
My guess is Lotus will struggle, but I think it's great they are going to compete. I give IndyCar credit. I was scpetical when they made the announcement of the new car (witout actually showing a car) but they have done the right things to get the manufacturers to come back. Things are looking up.
Terry, why do you have a beef against Carl? He was certainly not the only one who intentionally took a driver out. Harvick just took out Kyle and Joey took out JPM at Miami, James Buescher took out Danica at California, Kurt Busch took out Jeff Gordon earlier at Martinsville, and Kyle took out Brad earlier at Bristol. Carl did the exact same thing that all these guys listed above just did. The only difference was the results afterwards, things that Carl can't fully control. Granted, retaliation is not always good, but he is far from the only one, despite the fact that your column seems to only portray Carl as the only one who has done it. Just offering up a view from Carl's perspective, because I feel the negative treatment has gone way overboard.
I have no beef with Carl Cathy. In fact, I find him one of the best personalities in the sport and great with fans. But Carl went way over the line with the Brad K incidents. Actually, I blame NASCAR because I don't think the second one would have happened had a bigger penalty had come out of the Atlanta wreck. I believe the have-at-it philosophy generated excitement, but there is a point that it becomes blatantly dangerous and inexcusable.
Now that the 48 has won their 5th championship do you think Ron Malec will take his shot at being a Crew Chief or do you think he's happy where he is as car chief for the 48?
He's happy where he is, but it's time to leave the nest.
What are you hearing about the 88 and when do you think they'll announce a change?
My guess is Rick is leaning toward making a change, but it what's to make sure he has the right people in place. I think an announcement will come soon because he doesn't want this to linger over the winter.
Do you think Ray Evernham will work as a consultant for Rick Hendrick helping Dale Jr?
It's possible, but I don't know if Ray wants to work exclusively with Jr. Ray wants to be part of the big picture for the whole organization. Of course, that could benefit Jr.
Terry, is Jimmie the best ever now, and why does people say that he not a 5 time champ because of the chase and not the old point way. Jimmie didn?t make up the chase Nascar did, so what?s the deal.
I agree, and yes, I believe he is the best ever. It's a hugh cop out to say he wouldn't have won in the old system. It's false logic. You can't just go back and add up the points because everyone would have raced differently and used different strategies under a 36-race points system. The truth is JJ is the best driver in racing today, period, and probably the best of all-time in NASCAR.
Why doesn't Jr. go to a new team and possibly have a McMurray turnaround? It is obvious that he needs a change of scenery and maybe does not fit into Hendrick like McMurray did not fit in at Roush.
Jr. has two years left on his Hendrick deal, which pays him a large amount of money. And the sponsors are committed to Hendrick also for those two years. After that, I expect he will go elsewhere unless things change dramatically.
Do you think Carl Edwards will still run a full NW schedule if NASCAR eliminates Cups drivers from being eligible to win the NW championship?
He says he plans to do it even if they change the rules. Brad also plans to run the full NW sked. But sponorship may play a role on whether it happens for both drivers.
Hey Terry, what happens if Mr H makes a bunch of cc and crew changes again on #88 and Dale continues to run 27th, goes winless and misses the chase?
Nothing. Everybody still will complain about how bad he is and he'll have one year left at Hendrick.
How much has Jeff Gordon's reputation been tarnished now that #48 beat #24 to 5 championships?
His rep isn't taranished. The man's a four-time champ and still among the best ever. But there was a time when he might have been in the running to join Dale Sr. and Petty in talk as the best of all-time. JJ has taken that spot now.
Hendrick won't complain about Junior if he sucks next year, Mr H will be laughing all the way to the bank...
Not laughing, but cashing some big checks.
Terry, how do you think Mike Ford is feeling this week? His "best team" in nascar choked in every facet the last two weeks.
I don't know about choking, but I think Mike might have learned a lesson. Just keep quiet and keep grinding away until the end and don't give the other guys any bulletin-board material.
Where do you think Scott Speed ends up next year?
NW or trucks. I don't see him racing full time in Cup.
do you think jj will get 6 in a row next year?
It wouldn't surprise me, but I'm picking Carl at this point, which will surprise some people
Is Danica a victim of unrealistic expectations like Junior is? I got a feeling no matter what they do it will never be good enough.
Expectatons for both are way to high, however, both have to improve. Jr. is better than what he's shown the last two years and Danica needs to show she can post some top 15s, which she can. Neither did as well this season as they can do.
How difficult will it be for Vickers to get back in the car after many months of not being allowed to drive in a race car? Will his first time in the car be at the Daytona testing?
I imagine they will test before that at a couple of non-NASCAR tracks. I wouldn't say it's like riding a bicycle, but I think Brian will get back in the groove quickly.
Terry what do you think happen to Denny. Did JJ get in his head or was it just everything.
This was a new experience for Denny and he'll learn from it. I think he was a little too aggressive early in the race on Sunday. I know he said he wasn't nervous, but he appeared very uptight all week. That won't happen the next time he's in this position, and there will be a next time.
Red Bull will be pretty stout next season with Kahne and Vickers. Any chance they both make the chase?
I doubt it. Both drivers have the ability to get there, but I'm not sure Red Bull has enough people around them to get them there.
Hi Terry, what do you think happened to Kevin. Did JJ get into his head and cause him to make mistakes?
No. Kevin's a pro. He had nothing to lose going in. He made a tiny mistake on pit road, which he will deny until the day he dies. The real issue here is NASCAR needs speedometers on the cars and they need to show us the numbers on a monitor when the infractions happens.
I read an article somewhere that mentioned John Force may start up a NASCAR team. Do you think this will ever come to fruition?
That was way overblown and isn't go to happen. He was asked he he ever would consider it and he said he would never say never. But Force isn't starting a NASCAR team.
I am pretty sure my self. But does this fifth championship for Jimmy basically put him in the HOF already?
Without question. If he retired tomorrow, he's still going in the HOF.
So Rowdy's pit road speeding penalty at Texas must have been unjustified too?
No one said it was unjustified. They just need to improve the way it is enforced.
Terry, do you have any explanation of how Carl can go from 70 races without a win to domination for the last two wins?
Ford finally is got a handle on the new engine and has improved its aero package. The signs were showing a few races earlier before Carl won at Phoenix. There is a very fine line in Cup between winning and finisheing 12th.
You're catching some heat today Terry. My questions are, who do you believe will be on top of the 17 box come next season, and do you believe kenseth still has what it takes to contend for a cup? Thanks, and have a great holiday.
I like the heat Tim. The wilder the chatters the better. I absolutely think Matt can win another title. The man finished fifth this season with a car that wasn't up to snuff. He's the best at getting the most out of so-so-equipment. If Matt had his choice, Robbie would be back on the box.
If NASCAR lets Carl, Kyle etc run the full season in NW just not for drivers points then they are a bigger joke then I thought. Anyone with a brain and computer will be able to figure out Allgaier, Bayne or whoever has less points then the cup guys and will be a fake champ.
No, they will be the real champ. Carl or Brad or Kyle would be the fake champ in my book, as has been the case the last five years with Cup guys claiming titles in a league where they didn't belong. I hope they don't run every NW race, but even it they do, guys like Justin and Trevor will get more attention because they will be battling for a championship, along with former Cuppers like Sadler and Hornish. I'm OK with that. Just pick a series.
I want to know who you think is the best team in NASCAR. I believe it's Hendrick's.
Is there any doubt? Of course they are.
Who do you think will end up being the best sprint cup driver out of all the young up and coming guys? Bayne, Allgaier Amirillo or maybe even Cole Whitt? These kids got some talent!
Good question. When you asked guys in the garage this question, most of them say Bayne.
Hey Terry. How do you think Bobby Labonte will do in the #47 next year?
Bobby is great for the 47 team and it's perfect for him at this point in his career. I think he can post a few tops 10s and maybe even contend for a win or two.
What going to be the biggest storyline this offseason?
What kind of changes NASCAR will or won't make to the Chase. And of course, who becomes Jr's crew chief.
MWR will be sorry they let Bayne go. R Truex is good but Bayne will be great
Ryan is a talented kid also, but Bayne seems to be the golden child these days.
Do you think Jimmie Johnson is cheating or something? Because its not possible to win 5 championships in a row if you don't cheat. Agree?
I couldn't disagree more. JJ and Chad are just better than everybody else. It's that simple.
Denny certainly made this year exciting. After knee surgery he was still on top of his game. Do you see more of the same from him next year. The desire has got to be greater. Happy Thanksgiving.
Denny has a bright future and will win some Cup titles before he's through. It would be hard to top this season, but he'll be a contender.
Who is the most well-liked driver in cup?
By the fans, it's still Dale Jr. By the media, probably Jeff Burton and Jeff Gordon because both guys are so cooperative. Just about everyone likes Elliott Sadler, one of the nicest guys you could ever meet.
Terry,Now that RPM has downsided to two teams-do you think they will survive? I hope so.
Yes, they will restructure and come back strong. They can take the best people from four teams and place in them in the right spots for two teams, making both those teams stronger.
Does Ambrose have a shot at a top 15 finish in points next year, or more important, make the chase?
I don't see him making the Chase. Top 15 would be tough, but it depends on how quickly everyone gels together in the new No. 9 operation.
Do you believe Dale Jr. will make the chase next year? Because i'm a huge fan of his and he just isn't getting it done. Time for new crew chief maybe?
I would be surprised if Junior made the Chase next year, but it's not out of the question. He has the ability, but the team has been so far down that it's a long climb back up.
I'm outta here folks. Time to prepare myself for a Thursday feast. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. I also want to say a huge thanks to everyone who joined the chats this season, read my columns and watched me on NASCAR Now. I truly appreciate it. All the best. Peace.
