We've got Beano!
Good afternoon. We're getting toward the end of the season. Only a few more games to go. We're going to be here through the BCS title game. My record now is 7-5 on the picks. I will try to win again with another one at the end of this chat. Fire away.
Will you please tell me why everyone thinks that Auburn is going to lose to Alabama?
Not everybody, but the people in Las Vegas do and they do this for a living. If you feel Auburn is going to win, you still have time to fly to Vegas and bet the house on Auburn. Plus you get 4 points. The reason I think Alabama is going to win is because the game is at Alabama. But this is not my pick of the week.
You don't like baseball because you're too uncultured and unintelligent to understand it
A lot of people would agree with you.
UK gets to play UT on saturday... whats the Cats chances of getting the long awaited win against the volvs?
Back in 1950 or 51, Tennesse was playing Kentucky. A Kentucky player said to a Tennessee player, we're going to beat you today. The Tennessee player said, that's what your daddy said to my daddy. I read that in 1950 or 51. It's something that sticks with you for life.
Happy Thanksgiving Beano! ND or SC?
At this stage, I just don't know. USC has injuries. I have a hunch that Notre Dame will win this game. But I'm not going to bet the house on it.
If Auburn slips up who goes TCU or Boise? Who do you think deserves to go?
I think if Auburn finishes 12-1, because of the toughness of the SEC, that Auburn still deserves to go. However, if the computers say Boise or TCU, I have no argument with that. Whatever the computers say is what I think the game should be.
Stanford the best one loss team in the nation?
Hi Beano....I know that Joepa plans to be back, but I also plan to do a lot of things...Your thoughts?
No. 1, I thought he would be back next year and I think it will be his last. I've never made a prediction on when Paterno would retire, but I think next year will be his last.
Beano, on a more serious note how great is this Friday? I mean can we skip Turkey day? What is your prediction for Aub/Ala, Arz/or, BSU/Nevada?
It's great. All of these games on Friday and you still have some good Saturday games. Some good rivalry games. Georgia Tech-Georiga, South Carolina-Clemson, Michigan State-Penn State. But the Friday games are good games. Texas hasn't had a good year, but it's still Texas A-M-Texas.
Does TCU deserve the hype when two of its three quality wins will have lost 5 games?
Who gives the hype? They get the hype because they seem to win every year. People talk about hype. It's created by the media. TCU doesn't say give us hype. It's us in the media that hype teams. Does TCU deserve it? Well, they're pretty good.
When will people stop saying that the ACC needs Miami or FSU to be the face of the conference? They already have one, and it's called Virginia Tech.
I think there's some truth to that. I still think you have to have FSU and Miami get better. Then you have three teams.
In some years, Clemson will be very good. Clemson is a tough team to figure. Year after year they remain a puzzle.
Have you seen lsu play? they should be a 2 or 3 loss team
You could say OSU should have lost to Iowa, but they won. Let's face it a lot of teams have close games. Your observation is correct, but it was a close game with Alabama. LSU is going to have trouble beating Arkansas, don't kid yourself.
Beano! The Pac-10 seems to be getting a lot of credit as perhaps the best conference this year. Why do I look at it and think it is as bad as it's been in years? Teams 3 through 10 are all mediocre. Teams 1 and 2 have beaten nobody besides those mediocre teams (although Oregon gets credit for beating Stanford). What gives?
No. 1, I agree with you that the Pac-10 isn't very strong this year. USC is down. UCLA is a puzzle. Washington hasn't started winning again. The SEC is the toughest conference. The Big Ten is No. 2. Wisconsin, Michigan State, Ohio State, those are all pretty good teams, all three.
Where and what am I doing next year?
He did a pretty good job at Texas Tech. He probably should be hired somewhere, but I don't know what jobs will open. I think the Bengals will have a new coach. I think the Carolina Panthers will have a new coach. But I'm just having some fun there. In college, I don't know which coaches will be in trouble.
Am I the starting quarterback next year at Texas?
I don't know what's behind him. I would have to think that Texas has good QBs. Definitely when a Texas team loses as many games as it has this year, it's unreal.
Hey Beano....Am I gone if I lose to Ohio State this weekend?
I don't know. I think the seat is a little bit warm. I don't know what Michigan wants to do, if they want to make a change or not. If they want to make a change, they might look at Mr. Harbaugh at Stanford, but I don't know if he's interested. Or they might look at Al Golden at Temple. If any school has an opening, I think you have to look at Golden.
Is the WAC and MWC really better than me?
Oh, I don't know. I haven't studied it that closely, I have to be honest. It's possible. The ACC is still great in basketball, but they're the fifth conference. The Big East is the worst and the ACC is fifth. The SEC is No. 1 this year, followed by the Big Ten then Big 12 and Pac-10 tied for third. This is only an opinion. I can't prove anything I say.
Beano, could you share your thoughts on the recent comments by Ohio State president Gee?
Mr. President, worry about the English department, not the BCS.
Beano doyou think oregon could play auburn for the national title?
No, I think it's going to be Oregon-Boise State. I think Auburn will lose and Boise State will pass them in the BCS. Boise State has to win. I presume they will, but you never know.
LSU vs Ark....Who do you have?
I think Arkansas will win. I think Arkansas is a pretty good team. They lost at home to Alabama and they lost at Auburn. Arkansas is pretty good.
If you look at the best two-loss team in the country, it's probably Alabama or Arkansas. Or the New England Patriots.
If Boise State and Virginia Tech were to play tomorrow, who would you pick?
On a neutral field? I would pick Boise State. But again, it would not shock me if Virginia Tech won.
Am I the only one that dislikes Ohio State/Michigan being post-Thanksgiving?
Well, it's been post-Thanksgiving before. 1973, the 10-10 tie. 1950, the Snow Bowl. This is nothing new. But now, it's probably going to happen quite often. But it's happened many times before. The 1972 game was also post-Thanksgiving.
Beano, what is your take on a 1 loss team getting into the Championship Game over Boise or TCU? Which 1 loss teams do you think would have a good enough resume to make that argument?
If it were Auburn, it would not bother me. But that's the only team. Stanford, Wisconsin, Ohio State all have one loss, but they don't play in the conference Auburn plays in and those conferences don't have a championship game.
Don't you think Lattimore should at least be in the conversation for Heisman? Everyone knows I'm going to give him the ball and he can't be stopped.
Maybe next year. Not now. You have to look at him next year. Let's find out who wins it this year.
How likely do you think it is that the SEC has a representative in the BCS title game yet again?
If Auburn wins tomorrow and wins next Saturday, they have to be in. If Auburn loses to Alabama and beats South Carolina, the big debate will be between Boise State and whoever is in third. Whatever team finishes second, as far as I'm concerned, they earned it, under the present system.
What is your opinion on the Mississippi State/Ole Miss game? Do you think Mississippi State is going to see the Masoli that played vs. Tennesse or the Masoli vs. LSU?If he plays like he did vs. LSU, does MSU stand a chance?
That's a good rivalry. I know that's a good rivalry. The in-state rivalries are better than the inter-state rivalries. But I don't have a feeling about this game one way or another. It's going to be a good game.
What did you think of the two football games played in baseball stadiums last weekend? I'd say we got it right while Chicago showed two sports don't work well in Wrigley Field.
I have to think if they were to play in Wrigley Field again, it will be a different way. The Bears used to play their home games there. I thought it was a good try. I don't think it's the end of the world that they both had to go the one way. It made the game memorable. People will remember 15 years from now what happened in that game. The game with Yankee Stadium, I thought it was too much of a home game for Notre Dame. I thought it was a disgrace that they didn't have the walk-in for the whole Army brigade. They limited the tickets for Army and it was a disgrace. But this is a different Notre Dame. It is not the same Notre Dame.
Hi Beano,Can you rank your top 5 rivalry games? Thanks
To me, Army-Navy is still special. Naturally, everyone knows I love Michigan-Ohio State. Actually, I love Michigan at Ohio State. OSU is my favorite stadium. Georgia Tech-Georgia. Those rivalries in those southern states, those rivalries are another version of Gettysburg. Alabama-Auburn. South Carolina-Clemson. Virginia-Virginia Tech. And you can't leave USC-Notre Dame out.
Beano, you predicted Boise State v. Oregon in the NCG, if that happens who wins? If Boise State has beat them two years straight why would anything change?
Gimme a break. I would say Oregon, but I might change my mind. It would be real ironic after last year's game if they were to play for the national title. My person opinion is 90% of the country would be rooting for Boise State. Americans like to root for the underdog. There are three things I've observed about Americans, they root for the underdog, they like fair play and they are sentimental.
Will taylor martinez have a legitimate shot at the heisman in the future and how long till nebraska wins the national championship
Oh yeah, definitely they have a shot with him. You need a QB in college and he's good. Their schedule is tough next year. They play Michigan, Michigan State. The Big Ten will be the most interesting conference in college football next year. They won't be the best, but they will be the most interesting.
With the players that are returning next year for the Oregon Ducks, do you think that we could see a possible Back-to-Back national champion?
You have the coach. Don't lose the coach. Coach Kelly. Don't lose him. Oregon is not an easy place to win. It's unbelievable what's going on at Oregon.
I guess shooting Animal House there was the first sign things would be different. Notre Dame has the Gipper, Oregon has John Belushi.
But don't you think the point he is making, the president, is valid?
TCU and Boise State don't play the schedule that many other teams play. That's true. But under the system, they could play for the national title. You can't exclude them. He's probably right, they don't play the schedule. They certainly don't play the schedule the teams in the SEC play. Everybody knows that. We don't need a college president to tell us that. But he should be more concerned that all of his graduates can write than the BCS. From what I see, and all of my friends agree, that no college graduates seem to know how to write any more. If I were a college president, every student would write a 1,000-word theme every week for four years.
Realistic shot for PSU to ruin MSU's season Saturday?
It's not my pick of the week, but I think PSU will win. MSU, since they've joined the Big Ten, have never won at PSU, they're 0-8. If Iowa beats OSU, all Michigan State has to do is beat PSU and they're in the Rose Bowl.
Is Brian Kelly going to be able to recruit enough top notch talent on the defensive side to turn them into a top 10 team again?
I had a friend who is anti-Notre Dame go to the game last Saturday night. I agree Notre Dame was playing Army, but what my friend said was that they don't commit stupid penalties any more and they play hard. This guy can coach and if they don't play hard, they don't play. All I can say is that academics have nothing to do with them. The landscape has changed. They won't dominate any more, but they can win a national title. They just won't win 3 in 4 years. The No. 1 goal of the ND administration is to win the national championship.
I want to thank Georgia for being the only SEC team to schedule the Bronco's. Ole Miss obviously had other plans. Why do big conferences whine about lil' poor schools not playing anyone while they won't play them? Seems like a one sided conversation.
Excellent point. Excellent point. They're afraid to. I didn't realize that Georgia was going to play Boise State. Hats off to the Dawgs.
Georgia will also play Georgia Tech next year. That's two tough out of conference games. That's more than some Big Ten teams. But hats off to Ohio State, because they'll play Miami (FL) on the road and Colorado.
Is it hard to you to accept new teams being successful in CFB. Your a traditionalist right?
No. No. No, it does not. It makes it more interesting.
I'm at 7-5, which is hard to believe. South Carolina is at Clemson. SC is favored by roughly a field goal. But I'm picking Clemson to win, 34-24.
I will talk to you next week, Wednesday, 3 p.m. ET/noon PT.
