Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks, to a special Wednesday pre-Thanksgiving chat. There are no ESPN chats on Friday, so I moved mine up a couple of days since we have such a big fight weekend coming up and we had such a huge result last weekend with Martinez drilling Williams in their rematch. So we have much to discuss. Let's get right to it.

Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)

Happy Wednesday Danaconda! Let's get this Thanksgiving chat going! Today, as a freak, I am thankful for knockouts like Martinez over Williams. I played my DVR recording of it to my postman yesterday and even he said, "Wow!"...........

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

I love knockouts. Way better than decisions and that KO was, for me, easily the KO of the year so far.

Ricardo (LA)

Dan, any further info on a possible Fernando Vargas comeback?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

I only know what I posted on my Twitter (@danrafaelespn) yesterday -- his people contacted ESPN about a televising a comeback fight on Friday Night Fights around March at 170 pounds. No opponent was set. We'll see what happens.

JD (NJ)

Dan---super pumped for Abraham-Froch. Two guys who will not back down. Feels like the eve of war!

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

I agree. When the tournament was announced and the original slate of fights unveiled in the round robin part of the tournament I felt like this would be the best fight of the round-robin. I expect a tremendous fight.

Julio (DFW)

Do you think Martinez would be willing to go to Germany to face Sturm? Or will Sturm actually come to the States?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

I'm sure Martinez would go where the biggest money is, but I doubt it would be in Germany for a Sturm fight. I think Sturm would come here for the right deal. He did it for the De La Hoya fight. That said, I don't see that one being on top of the list for Martinez.

Oscar (Boston)

It looks like PBF continues to get into legal trouble. If this continues I dont see him ever fighting the Pac Man.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Agreed. Now, besides the charges against him and the accusation that he poked a security guard come more accusations of trying to drive a dude off the road. Forget Mayweather's career. It is his life that is spiraling out of control.

drock (philadelphia)

Big D! Who do you think Pacman is most likely to fight next? Also, will Paul Williams' career ever be the same after that devastating knockout?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Not sure about Manny. It'll either be Floyd or one of these guys -- Mosley, Marquez or Berto. Some will depend on how Marquez and Berto do this weekend.

Frank (NYC)

Dan, I was at Boardwalk Hall last Saturday night. WOW! But surprised that you didn't consider Shane Mosley a possible next opp. for Sergio. One last hurrah for Shane, big American name for Sergio to take on, and though Shane hasn't looked great his last 2 fights, at his age it may be easier to add muscle and bulk up to 160 than cut weight down to 147 or 154. Nothing for Mosley to lose and plenty of upside for Martinez.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I didn't consider Shane as his next opponent because that isn't even a serious possibility.

Nareg (Boston)

D$ - Think Cotto-Cheato II is PPV if it happens? Wonder who the crowd favorite will be for that one...

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

If it happens in the New Meadowlands, Cotto will be the huge crowd favorite because the crowd will be heavily Puerto Rican, especially with the target date in June coming the night before the annual PR Day Parade.

psycho (LaLaLand)

in the aftermath of PWill-Martinez,how do you think Pac will now fare against him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Pacquiao is not fighting Martinez next. That is the fantasy of the Martinez people but I do not believe it is going to happen or even seriously be discussed.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, do you think the Cotto-Cheater 2 will happen? Miguel seemed pretty serious about never allowing Margo to ever make money off him again.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

When Arum shows Cotto what he can make for that fight compared to any other I'm pretty sure Cotto will come around.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, I can do nothing but shake my head at Floyd Jr. I'm sure there are people saying that all these people are just making up these stories, but it's hard to believe this many incidents are all made up. Sounds like jail might be the best thing for him at this point.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

No mention of DLH in your discussion of possible opponents for Sergio Martinez? Not saying I think it will happen, but it's intriguing and people will bring it up. I'll put it this way - I don't think it's any more or less likely than him fighting Pacquaio or Mayweather.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Oscar insists he is retired.

CainP (Az)

Dan-Dingo It sounds like Martinez challenged Pacman at 154 do you think when it reaches Pacman he will actually consider this?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

No.

PeteNice (Philly)

Dan, did you get the chance to read the NY Post article on Iran Barkley? Pretty sad. I have a feeling we will be reading the same kind of article 20 yrs from now about a famouse current fighter.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I did see it and it's sad.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Happy Thanksgiving Dan. Who do you got in the HBO fights tomorrow. I think Caballero and Berto win relatively easy and Marquez wins by UD in a slugfest.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

I like Caballero by a knockout, Berto with ease but maybe going the distance and Marquez in a rough fight.

Isai (OKC)

With extensive ESPN Pacquiao coverage and Martinez KO making the top ten this weekend, gotta say it has been good exposure for boxing. With two potential Fight of Year candidates this weekend, this may be a great opportunity for more positive exposure. Great time to be a boxing fan.

Rafa (London)

Big fights on the weekend, but i think only Froch-Abraham is a toss up- Marquez, Ward & Berto should all win pretty handily

dylan (austin)

hey dan, what's the hang-up on the bradley-alexander venue? Bradley drew 2,500 in his hometown, Alexander drew 10,000, and nobody in Atlanta gives a damn! Get out-of-state judges, and STL seems like the obvious choice...

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

They have not been able to finalize anything yet. Simple as that.

Paulie (Santa Fe)

In your opinion, has Sergio Martinez sewn up Fighter of the Year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Definitely.

classicboxfan (nycmetroarea)

Hi Dan, In light of Chagaev's lackluster effort in his last fight, what chances do you gove him to be competitive in a mandatory matchup with Haye?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I think Chagaev is in serious decline and The Ducker ought to eat him up.

Jimmy (Indiana)

Were you surprised at the sparse crowd at the Williams-Martinez fight and can you really blame the Klitschkos for fighting in Germany when they can draw 40K there?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

I didn't think it was sparse. I thought drawing 5500 was right about what I had expected. It was more than the first fight and neither guy is a well-known fighter to the general public or a draw anywhere. The crowd that was there was into it and loud.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

I am thankful for phrases like Sergio Martinez just iced PWill. I am also thankful to be heading to Vegas on Friday morning for my first Vegas fight!

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Nice. Have fun!

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

Dan, your thoughts please on the repugnant WBA naming David Haye "Fighter of the Year" ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

If by "Fighter" the WBA means "Ducker" then it is well-deserved.

Big D (Heading to the MGM)

Danimal, is the Rouge still the place to see fight industry people chilling?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Yes, usually that is a good place.

Al (WI)

Nice to see Martinez finally getting some love from some boxing fans. He's an exciting fighter who seems like a genuinely nice guy.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Martinez is a great guy. One of the coolest things I saw last week was walking back to the hotel from the arena with Martinez and his people. We walked through the Caesars casino and spontaneously the crowd started to cheer and clap and chant "the champ is here." It was cool and Sergio seemed genuinely touched by the love.

Drake (Williamsburg)

Dan, how about an early prediction for Froch-Abraham?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Great fight. I like Abraham on a late knockout.

Steve (Hartford)

Do you think Manny goes to 140 which he can easliy make for Marquez or like the prima donna he is makes Marquez balloon to 147?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I would be shocked if he went to 140. No way. If the fight happens it will be either at 147 or close to it.

Ross (Indianapolis)

Happy Thanksgiving! Who are your picks for the Showtime double-header?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I just gave my pick on Abraham-Froch. In the other fight, I like Ward by lopsided decision.

Bob (Boston)

Have you reconsidered attending the Adamek-Maddalone fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I won't be there because I will be in Las Vegas covering Khan-Maidana that week.

David Haye (UK)

Silly Americans, Why eat turkey when duck is so much better.

John H (Augusta )

Happy Tday Dan! Thanks for all the hard work you've done this year. What kind of grub are you looking forward to tomorrow at the table?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

David Haye's secret duck recipe.

David Haye (London)

line em up....Chagaev, Meehan, Fury...I want all the top guys for my legacy.

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

DTM, if Haye & one of the Klitchko's happen, would a 24-7 for that fight be one of, if not the, best 24-7's ever? I submit yes..

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

It would be great but 24/7 is for PPV fights at this point and if that fight happens it won't be a PPV in the US.

gene (denver)

I know that it doesn't look like either are considered next for pacquiao but do you think there is a chance we can see him face the winner of bradley vs alexander before he calls it quits?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

That's a fight Arum has mentioned for Pacquiao in the fall of 2011. I think it's possible.

JD (NJ)

Dan...can VKlit wiggle around the politucs and fight Adamek next in the NY area, or will he be forced to face the Solis-Austin winner next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

The WBC ruled a couple of weeks at its convention that he must next fight the Solis-Austin winner. I expect that will be his next fight next spring.

Brad (Philly)

Do you think Martinez will fight again at Boardwalk Hall? I've gone to his last three fights and can't wait to see his next fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I think the Boardwalk Hall folks and Caesars folks would love to have him back.

Sean (Santa Ana, Ca)

Hey Dan. Happy turkey day. your site is my home page. Thanks for all the coverage. what's next for troy ross if he doesn't get to be apart of the cruiserweight tourney? he seemed like he was on his way to beating the top cruisers (cunningham)

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Good question on Ross. He was not invited (or at least hasn't been yet) to join the cruiser Super Six so I don't know what he'll do next. He did just fight a couple of weeks ago and won an easy decision in Canada and looked pretty good doing it.

Butch (Jersey)

Is a Martinez v. Pavlik rematch completely out of the question? Pavlik got beat, and sliced up, but the fight was competitive and Kelly doesn't give up. If he can right himself, what do you think about that?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

He didn't want the rematch when he could have forced and I don't think anything has changed. Besides, Pavlik has a lot more issues in his life than planning his next fight right now.

Dan (Chicago)

If Jean Pascal ices Bernard Hopkins in the same manner as Martinez, could he overtake Martines as FOTY?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I do not believe so.

Matt (Dallas)

What fight will u be covering this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I'm home this weekend. But there WILL be a Saturday night RAD chat for all of the Fight Freaks!

Cole (Payson, UT)

Dan and freaks, Happy Thanksgiving! I think you need to add Lou Dibella to the list of MUST follows on twitter. His post fight tweets where classic last weekend.

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

My Letterman countdown of what i'm most excited for this weekend: 5)Turkey, 4)Football, 3)Marquez-Kats, 2)Froch-Abraham, 1)Random shots of Froch's girlfriend throughout the fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Nice.

Mike (San Jose, CA)

I know what D$ is thankful for ... the Love Child.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

J. J. M. (Phoenix)

Dan, what do you think about the idea that the definitive win for Sergio was actually bad for his career? If he couldn't get big fights before that performance, where does that leave him now? He just erased his defining opponent, so a trilogy is probably out of the question.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

When you destroy a top p4p fighter with one punch in a very exciting performance it is not bad for your career. Get your head out of your cavity.

Sergio Martinez (Atlantic City)

You may think you're cool with your marathon chats, but I could finish one of these chats in less than 4 minutes without needing to leave it to the judges.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

I'm personally rooting for Martinez-Dzinziruk. I think it is the most competitive fight to be made between 154 and 160. Dzinziruk doesn't have a lot of options at 154 either.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

That is a good fight and, as I wrote in my blog yesterday, it's competitive.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I encourage all the Freaks to check out my blog from yeserday which details the possibilities for Martinez: http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/blog/_/name/rafael_dan/id/5842186/fishing-sergio-martinez-fight

Matt (Dallas)

DAN THA MAN...Since you will be at home which telecast are you watching live? Dual TV's?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

I'll start with Showtime, which comes on first and then flp back and forth.

Brian (LA)

Who's side are you on regarding Steinbrenner vs Jeter negotiations?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Ownership in this case. Jeter had all the leverage last time, now the Yanks do. They are already willing to dramatically overpay him.

Duff (Boston, MA)

3 HBO fights, 2 Showtime fights and RAD on Saturday. Add in some drinks and some leftovers and this is shaping up to be an epic night.

Cole (Payson, UT)

I was in attendance for the Pacquiao KO of Hatton. The place went NUTS. Was the reaction to Martinez KO similar to that?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Different. This one was almost a sense of bewilderment because it was just so out of the blue.

Jeff (LA)

Did Lou Dibella say what he had in mind for Zsolt Erdei's next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Nothing specific. They want a name opponent but I think Erdei will wind up with at least one more smaller fight first.

Isai (OKC)

Martinez v. Lee makes great sense too... as stated by your blog. Good money, very winnable fight!

Richard (Oxford, UK)

Hey Dan, any updates on when the Texas commission will release the results of the post fight drug tests? Interesting to see how much artificial help Margarito needed to make weight

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I actually spoke with the Texas commission this morning on that very topic. They do not have the results back yet. I will stay on top of it.

coach K (Durham)

We look good Dan, and you need to mention that in this chat!

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Duke looks awesome this season and manhandled a really good team last night to give Coach K his 800th win at Duke! YES!

classicboxfan (nycmetroarea)

Dan, What do you think is the next logical next step for David Lemeuix ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

He's supposed to fight next week (although no opponent locked in yet) and then possibly face Rubio in February in an eliminator, which is a solid opponent for him at this stage of his career.

Aaron (MI)

Chances of Roy Jones vs Adamek actually getting made? I like Roy Jones but it appears he has lost his mind...

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

I think ultimately, that fight won't happen. At least I hope it won't.

Art (MN)

Dan, it's Thanksgiving tomorrow and the world wants to know: are you a leg or breast man?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Breast.

Gez (UK)

A name that wasn't in your blog to fight Martinez, Matthew Macklin. An oversight or more likely no chance of him fighting Maravilla?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

No shot. Not worth discussing. Macklin is a good fighter mind you. Just not even in the running.

gene (denver)

Apologies for not reading the blog before the chat. Never happen again!

Derek Jeter (Tampa)

I thought you loved me

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

I do but sometimes there is a need for tough love. I knew you back when I covered you as a minor leaguer and you were always classy. Let's keep it that way.

Gil (NYC)

If Marquez and Berto win this weekend do you have any interest in them fighting at about 143?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

No. Both have far more interesting fish to fry.

Cole (Payson, UT)

From what you can gather from your peers and the freaks, is there anyone besides Shane Mosley who likes the prospects of Mosley v Pacquiao's fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Honestly, Shane is one of the most well-liked fighters there is by the media corps, but I have to find a fellow reporter who likes the idea of that fight. Nobody likes it as far as I can tell.

Khalil (Atlanta, GA)

Am I the only one that thinks Katsidis can pull it off this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I don't think so. Marquez is getting older and Katsidis is a strong guy with massive motivation following the death of his brother recently. An upset would not be a complete shock.

Frank (NYC)

I fell in love with Sergio Saturday night. That look on his face like he just unwrapped a Red Ryder BB gun on Christmas morning was priceless. So humble. So good for the sport.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Couldn't agree more.

Chris (Los Angeles, CA)

Ever get tired of Freaks approaching outside of boxing events? Say like when you're out with friends on your free time?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Not at all. I enjoy meeting the Freaks and am honored that they want to talk to me or take a picture with me. The only caveat to that is when they try to do it when the fight just ended and I am writing my story on deadline. I try not to be rude but that is not a good time to approach me. There were some Freaks who saw me in AC on Saturday and were kind enough to wait until I had filed my story before coming over to me.

Joe (Camarillo, CA)

Dan my Man, it's been awhile since I chimed in...new job. Anyway, curious of your thoughts on a couple of mythical matchup...Prime Mosley vs Pacquiao @ lightweight. Who you got?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

At 135, it is hard to pick against a prime Mosley. But Pacquiao is also a force. I have no idea other than it would have been a great fight.

Carl (FLA)

Dan, which team do you love most: a) Yankees b) Lakers c) Duke d)

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Yanks, Giants, Duke, Knicks. Those are my teams. Not a Lakers fan.

Ignacio (Puerto Rico)

There was a time when Rafael Marquez was considered a better fighter than his brother. Do you think Rafaels career might have ended with a closer legacy to his brothers had he simply moved on after the first Izzy fight which he won?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Rafael was never cosidered better than Juan Manuel.

Mario Mungia (Corpus Christi, Texas)

Dan, your right about martinez throwing the overhand left, but I have a video from youtube that shows how a righty throws a right hook and a lefty throws a left hook, I believe it is possible

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Sure it is possible but the punch Martinez scored the knockout with was absolutely not a hook.

Julio (DFW)

Dan what is the latest on Prescott? Will he ever live up to the expectations he set when he KO'd Khan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Nothing specific although his name has been tossed around for an ESPN2 FNF fight in the early part of the upcoming season.

Mario Mungia (Corpus Christi, Texas)

Any news on a possible John-Gamboa fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Nothing. John fights next week. I doubt it will happen. From what I am told HBO prefers Gamboa against Caballero or Rojas next.

Mario Mungia (Corpus Christi, Texas)

Dan what fight are you looking forward to the most this week, other than the Froch-Abraham fight that is well documented by you that could be FOY? Any fights that could end up being surprisingly good?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I think Caballero-Litzau MIGHT be a good fight.

Mario Mungia (Corpus Christi, Texas)

I noticed in the weekend scorecard that a judge scored a fight with a 1/2 in one of the rounds? Is that possible? I didn't know it was possible to score a 9 and 1/2 or am I mistaken?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

I explained why in my scorecard. Read it again.

Matt (Southington, CT)

While it's been said he's still under contract, is Larry Merchant just about done calling fights?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Why would you say that? Larry will call Saturday's card and the Khan-Maidana fight and remains under contract with HBO for several more years.

Hayemaker (London)

The Klitschkos need me. They can get in line behind Sprott.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

You mean behind Sprott, Danny Williams, Audley rematch, Martin Rogan, Sam Sexton, Tyson Fury and Matt Skelton first right?

Josh (Everett, WA)

King Freak! Please end this argument between me and my brother. He says Martinez' KO of Paul Williams was more impressive than Pacquiao's KO of Hatton. He says its because Hatton was KO'd before by Mayweather and that Williams has never been stopped until the Martinez fight. I still think Pacquiao's KO was more murderous. Help please?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Martinez's was more impressive because of the fact that Williams was thought to have a sensational chin and their first fight had been so competitive. Williams was much prime than Hatton was when he fought Manny.

Richard (Oxford, UK)

Hilarious twitter chat with Carl Moretti. "Check your wallet on your way out". Legendary! Wretched WBA!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Oh Carlton!

Duff (Boston, MA)

Who wins the Hasegawa-Burgos fight in Japan this weekend? I think Hasegawa might be too much too soon for Burgos, even if he's coming off a KO loss.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I really don't know. Hasegawa is at home, which is significant when your opponent is coming so far. But Burgos is a natural feather and Hasegawa is moving up two divisions. I am pretty interested in that fight.

Jaff (NYC)

greetings from a 'freak in training' (started following the chats a couple of months back, and love them). I hear there are rumblings about a Chavez Jr.-Foreman fight, assuming Foreman is fully healed, who has the edge in that?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

That's a fight Arum has thrown out there but I just don't think he'll actually pull the trigger and make it.

Gerardo (AZ)

ANY news on Alfredo Angulo?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

No. Call the local dog pound.

Bing (Philly)

Thanksgiving is a scam - it's just a holiday invented by the Butterball company just to get people to buy more Turkeys.

bpor (Hermosa Beach, CA)

Dan, I might be crazy but I thought I saw you recently retweet a post from Andre Dirrell about him being back in the gym and training intensely.. If so, wouldn't that be the fastest 3 months in the history of the world? Especially 3 months - "Symptom Free" ??

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Yes. He becomes less believable every day.

Paul Williams ((la la land))

Yo Dan, know what I'm sayin. What do you see next for me know what I'm sayin. I wanna know which division I should stay in know what I'm sayin so what's your opinion on that know what I'm sayin.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Hilarious.

R! (Bay Area)

Showtime Double Header, HBO Triple Header, and Top Rank Live Twin Bill featuring the heavy hitting Giovanni Segura -- going to be a great Saturday night.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Yeah, don't forget about a solid TR Live card on Saturday night. Besides Segura, Miguel Vazquez makes his first defense of his lightweight belt.

Sam (LA)

Sergio Martinez's crown was awesome

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

He looked like the Burger King for a minute!

Frank (NYC)

Where was Jim Lampley last Saturday night? It's just not the same w/Bob Papa.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Lampley was at his daughter's wedding. I was disappointed with the call of the end of the fight. A hugely dramatic moment completely messed up by the announcers. Max Kellerman did an admirable job of trying to salvage it but the moment was missed. Lampley wouldn't have missed it.

The Miz (Ohio)

Dan, are you ready to begin the Era of Awesome?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

I AM READY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@stonemclean (Canada)

Thanks for answering my question on Twitter yesterday RE p4p. He's another one about rankings, did you ever consider writing a summary of ranking changes each week like The Ring does?

Eric (MTL, Canada)

How come the little guy with a big punch Uchiyama is in the Ring magazine top 20 pound fo pound? Other than Salgado, who has he beat?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

No idea. I find that ridiculous.

David Haye (Chasing the Klitschko's)

I am the undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World! I'm coming boys!

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Undisputed champion of England!!!!!!

John (Phoenix)

Simmons couldnt hang for 4 hours even yesterday, hail to the KING!

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

I sneer at his primitive skills.

Cole (Payson, UT)

You may have covered this already, if so forgive me. How do Max Larry and HBO decide who covers what fight? I invision Max and Larry having an intense game of paper-rock-scissors for the big fights.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

They don't decide. It's up to the executive producer, Rick Bernstein.

JJD (Seattle)

You really don't think a Klitschko/Haye heavyweight title unification fight would be on US PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

No way.

Isai (OKC)

TRL over Solo Boxeo and Fight Night Club in 2010 - come on Oscar you're totally getting outdone by the bobfather!

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Agreed. The TR Live shows are consistently better.

Tom (Manayunk)

How the hell are you a Duke fan? What's the connection?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I went to high school with Greg Koubek and was friendly with him. I was getting into college hoops when he was being recruited in the mid-80s and started following Duke when he signed there. He played four years, played in four Final Fours and was a co-captain of a national championship team. So that is why I am a Duke fan and have been so since I started following college hoops as a teenager. Been a Duke fan since about 1986.

Derrick (Phillly)

Danimal - Just heard Jones-Karass II will be on the televised undercard of donair-montiel in February. Any truth to that rumor?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

It's being discussed but HBO has not agreed to buy it yet. That is still under discussion internally. To say the fight is done and on that card is premature.

kevin (utah)

just read ur blog danno, wanted you to possibly clear up the cotto vs martinez situation. It sounds as if u give cotto zero chance, could u explian ur reasoning king freak.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

I just think Martinez would be too big and fast for Cotto at 160.

Mark (WI)

It was awesome to hear Nick Charles on Top Rank Live last weekend, is he back on Showbox?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

It was great to see him and he looked and sounded good. But he is not back on ShoBox.

Ali (Tampa)

How was PW after the fight? Did he have to go to the hospital?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

He was OK but went to the doctor just as a precaution to get checked out.

JJD (Seattle)

So if it's NOT on US PPV, are you thinking HBO or Showtime or nothing for Klitschko/Haye?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Haye ever stops quacking I am fairly certain HBO would land the fight.

Rob (Halifax, Canada)

Happy Thanksgiving Eve American Freaks! I actually like the idea of Winky Wright(guy who used to fight , former JM champ) against Martinez..Thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Have started drinking already? The holiday isn't until tomorrow.

Chris D. (Chicago)

I was a little disappointed that there was no build-up to Katsidis-Marquez on Saturday. Usually HBO has something prepared in case a fight ends so early -- do you think the network was just caught totally off-guard with the quick KO?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Never thought of that, but it would have been nice to see something about it.

Luis Sanchez (Miami, FL)

How you doing Dan. What's your take on the upcoming Solis vs Austin fight? Whats your opinion about Solis. Doyou think he's ready to fight the Klitchko brothers if he beats Austin?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Solis is far more talented than Austin. Solis needs to get in good shape. That said, whatever shape he's in I think Vitali dominates him.

Nick (Queens)

Is Froch Abraham live? Will it air before Ward-Bika?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

It will air on same-day tape and open Showtime's broadcast.

butch (from the cape)

Before the Sergio/Pwil KO what was your KO of the year so far?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

There were a few candidates. Off the top of my head they included Alvarez-Baldomir and Wlad Klitschko-Eddie Chambers.

ted (indiana)

Hey king freak, do u give bika a realistic chance against ward?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

You never know but Ward is better in every facet of boxing. If Bika is going to win, he will have to make an ugly, bruising, dirty fight.

Richard (Oxford, UK)

What is your opinion on the British Boxing Board of control withholding Audleys purse pending an investigation into his performance?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Good for them. Audley didn't try to fight. It was an absolute disgrace.

Chris (Bay Area)

Dan, Your thoughts please on Prospect Wille Nelson (16-0-1). Sounds like he was very impressive last weekend as you wrote. Any more info on him? I saw him destroy on the Ward vs. Green undercard. Was very intigued by him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

He looked pretty solid to me. He wasn't in with much but he's a wiry, lanky guy and entertained.

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

Dan, please tell me so i know whether i need to ignore my twitter all day saturday. Are you going to post the Abraham-Froch results right after the fight, or will you wait til it airs on showtime

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Hadn't really thought about it. No idea.

Mr. Suliaman (USA)

I'd like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow - for a small fee of course.

Ali (Tampa)

You ever get Simmons' head screwed on right about his Pacman/Pavlik dream match?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Not yet.

Matt (Dallas)

Wait what time is Abraham vs Froch actually taking place as for as American ET time?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Probably around 5 or 6 pm ET.

Michael (Bronx)

I saw some photos from the fight this weekend, Lou DiBella gets pretty emotional. Watching the replay of the fight, I saw him sweating during the fight and lose it after the KO. Is he going to stroke out at one of these fights?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Very possibly. He was a nervous wreck before hand. He came over to me probably six times during the undercard to tell me "my rectum is rotating" he was such a wreck. That Lou has a way with words. He was overjoyed by Sergio's victory.

BHOP (Philly)

Sergio is just an average boxer. He never fought a slick Filipino fighter.

Mark (NYC)

It's totally okay to have a man crush on Sergio Martinez, right?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Yes, you are allowed.

Gil (NYC)

I will buy the domain for JustsaynotoMosleyPacquiao.com

john (Houston)

I know the initial numbers are 1.15 for Manny vs Margarito and you said those would go up, is it usually a big number that gets added on or just a few thousand?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

It all depends. Oscar-Mayweather was readjusted and added hundreds of thousands of buys. On this fight when it's all said and done it might add another 50,000 buys.

Kermit Cintron ( )

Don't worry Paul. It was a headbutt. No one hits that hard.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

I'm calling my shot. Abraham wins by 8th Rd. KO

Tom (Washington State)

Thanks for the chat, Dan. Was hoping against hope you would do it today for the abbreviated holiday week, then show up at the office and lo & behold!

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

I aim to please the Freaks.

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

DTM i know that 1.15 mil is a lot of PPV buys, but did you think the buys would be higher?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Not at all. It did just about what I had pegged it to do. I thought all along it would be a little over 1 million.

Greg (Los Angeles)

I would have paid to see Al Haymon's reaction to Williams losing. It wasn't the best of years for big Al with Arreola's big plans going down the tubes, PBF's issues and PWill's chin being broken into a million pieces.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Al got a bit teary-eyed off in the corner at the post fight press conference. He knew it was a very tough fight, which is why he sought to avoid it. Before the fight, he came over to the press section to say hello to a few guys and said just that -- tough fight and neither guy wants to lose this one. He expected a rough fight.

Jay (MD)

Just read the answer to my question in your blog. Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Which is why I encourage Freaks to do their reading before coming into the chat so they can be prepared.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Wow. This is not good: http://www.latimes.com/os-christy-martin-shot-domestic-viole20101124,0,5201619.story

Jay (Indiana)

Dan, does Richard Schafer ever try to put a muzzle on BHop's mouth? It seems he could really be detrimental to their company sometimes.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Even if he wanted to, nobody muzzles BHop and Richard knows it.

Dan (New Jersey)

Martinez is the man of the moment but have to give credit to Punisher for being extremely classy in his post fight comments--both fighters seem very likable

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

I agree. I give Paul credit for not making any excuses. He gave credit to Martinez and said he got caught with a punch. It happens.

Stan (Boston)

Happy Thanksgiving Dan. Paul Williams didn't seem to pleased about being shown a replay of his knockout by Max. Is it unusual for HBO to show the losing fighter a replay of them getting knocked out?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Not at all.

Adrian (Budapest)

Will Zsolt Erdei become the Hungarian version of Tomasz Adamek with his ability to pull a crowd in New Jersey? Maybe DiBella should take him fight in Ohio which has the largest Hungarian population in the US.

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

I was shocked by the cheering section Erdei had at the fight, especially considering he was fighitng an unknown opponent-type. Imagine what would be if he fought a serious opponent?

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, Chisora has a _ % chance of beating Wlad?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

5.

Sonny (Bronx)

You see the idiots on PTI saying Martinez landed a "lucky punch" b/c he wasn't looking? Who lets them talk about Boxing anyway?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Anyone who says it was a lucky punch is a fool. It was practiced exactly the way it went. He landed the same punch in the first round but was slighly off. They knew Williams drops his hand and he feinted to the side and came over the top. They parcaticed that a million times in training. What do you expect from guys who don't know a left hook from a fish hook?

Jeff (South Dakota)

When transfering your DVR boxing programs to dvd do you keep the complete telecast together or do you break the fights up ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Generally I record the complete telecast start to finish. If it's a long PPV -- or anything over about 2:40ish, I cut it and put it on two DVDs. Never cut between rounds. If anything, I cut between fights or during a promo spot and I will leave a few seconds of the end at the beginning of the next disc so there is a little bit of overlap and nothing is missed. I am extremely anal about the way I do my DVDs.

Ron Katz (Hicksville, NY)

Thanks for the Twitter turn on, what little life I had left is now gone.

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Richard (Oxford, UK)

Glad to see your main man Kevin Iole covering the fight in AC on Saturday rather than the garbage UFC in Michigan. Did he mention to you why he choose to cover the boxing rather than MMA?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

I did ask him. Yahoo had its other MMA writer at the fight and a columnist who lives in Detroit there so they had two writers at the UFC so Kevin was sent to cover the boxing match. If he could have picked on his own, he would have gone to the MMA card.

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

Simmons doesn't know boxing, I demand he put you on his podcast!

@stonemclean (Canada)

What was with Shane Mosley and his people going crazy on you on Twitter yesterday? Saying you were telling lies to garner favor with promoters? What does that stem from?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

I have no idea other than they are delusional and desperate for a Manny fight.

Sam (LA)

It was a 'lucky punch' that he landed like... 8 times in that round.

Adam (DuPage)

What's going with Barrera?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

He has a fight on TR Live coming up in a couple of weeks.

jimmyj (montreal)

Could you see jose suliaman playing the penguin in a remake of the old batman movies?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

That is legendary. For a small sanctioning fee, of course.

Mrs. DTM (at work)

Happy Freaksgiving, all!

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

YES!!!!!!

jim lampley (daughters wedding on Saturday)

I'd like to make a toast to the lovely couple....Bang...Sorry, I just got the feeling something big happened...

Ross (Indianapolis)

Simmons only went 4 hours with his chat yesterday. The Freaks knew your 6-hour mark was safe!

Brent (Toronto)

HBO only has one scheduled fight so far 2011. Shouldnt we hearing about other proposed fights for Jan/Feb right about now?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

They have two -- Bradley-Alexander on Jan. 29 and Montiel-Donaire on Feb. 19 and a WCB date on Feb. 26 that has not been filled. Patience my good Freak.

Jeff (Dearborn, MI)

Any update on how Allan Green's protest is coming along?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Probably about as well as Cordoba's protest over the Rigondeaux result.

Gil (NYC)

How about Guerrero and his fans against Martinez in AC?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

He had a nice cheering section, which didn't surprise me.

"Money" (Jail)

Life was so much easier when i was just a Pretty Boy!

Jeff (Wisconsin)

The vomitous WBA ranked Matthew Hatton as a top 10 welterweight. Are you kidding me?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Compared to some horrific rankings that one is not all that bad actually.

Alex (Clev., OH)

Who is Adrian Broner fighting, the schedule still says TBD last time I looked....

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

I have no idea. I have not received an updated bout sheet.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Freaks, here is another KO of the year candidate from this past Saturday in Mexico: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1h8axMp_4c&translated=1

Joel (Queens,NY)

Do you think Margarito will have recovered enough to fight Cotto in June? Their first fight damaged both of them

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Guess, we'll find out.

Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)

My Floyd Mayweather bobblehead took my iphone away, poked me, then tried to run me off the road

dantheboxingfan (flanders NJ)

Who would pay to see Margarito after that performance on Nov. 13th?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

There will be a ton of interest in a rematch with Cotto.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

Floyd "Bail Money" Mayweather??

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I like it.

Rob (New York)

Did you see Shane on twitter saying the Pacquiao fight was a done deal?? Has he seriously lost his mind or is there truth to that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

He may have agreed to terms, which is possible, but he and his people know they are a back up plan. If there is no Mayweather fight, Arum says he wants to reach terms with Mosley, Berto and Marquez and then when he goes to the Philippines in a few weeks for Manny's birthday party, he will sit with Manny and present him the options. So for Shane to say he has a deal and will be Manny's next opponent is just naieve.

mike (nyc)

Dan,First of all Happy Holidays to you anr yours, and all the Freaks!!Secondly, I think Floyd needs an intervention of some kind or a mentor. He looks headed for a major tailspin

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Looks? He IS IN ONE.

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Dan, any word on who Arreolla's next opponent might be? What type of shape is he in?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Arreola will be back on ESPN2 FNF on Jan. 28 against Joey Abell. John Molina faces Raymundo Beltran (good fight) on the undercard.

Karma (Everywhere)

What up Floyd!

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

Will there be a 24/7 Mayweather vs State of Nevada?

Gordon (Tacoma)

At what point of inactivity do you remove fighters from your rankings. I just realized it had been quite sometime since Mayweather has fought and it sounds like it will still be a while.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Roughly one year.

Ian (london)

Hey Dan did you and Amir Khan become good friends in Dallas. I was speaking to him on FB and he said your a real cool dude.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

I first met Amir a few years ago in Vegas and interviewed him for my prospect of the year story. I've interviewed him several times and covered his fight vs Malignaggi in May. In Dallas I ran into him and his uncle one night at the sports bar in the fight hotel and we hung out for probably an hour or two and talked boxing and about his career and several topics. He is a nice kid, very likable and a good personality. It's nice to just relax once in awhile and just get to know some of these guys you cover in a relaxed atmosphere. I am looking forward to covering his fight in a couple of weeks in Vegas.

Mayweather Jr. (Las Vegas)

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my fellow Turkeys out there.

Igor (Big D)

How come your P4P still have Williams at #3?And who from ESPN willcommintate on Klitschko v Chisora fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Because they were updated before the fight and will be again in a few weeks, which is why it clearly lists a date for which the results are through. Not sure who is on the call of the fight.

John (Boston)

Hey Dan what do you think of southpaw 14-0 prospect from my area Danny O'Connor?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Good boxer. I like to call him Paul Spadafora Lite (minus the tattoos and prison time).

Mark (Minneapolis)

Was Sergio still wearing the crown on his walk through Ceasers

TK (NY, NY)

Why doesn't Martinez want to move to super middleweight? Seems like there are a lot of guys to fight. Is he just too small?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

He doesn't want to.

Bad Brad (New Mexico)

Strong ticket sales for Hopkins-Pascal. Does that surprise you?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Not at all. They have great fans in Canada and they recognize this is an interesting fight. And they support Pascal.

Matt (portland, OR)

Has Pavlik's team said anything about his "problem". Or has it just gotten to the point were silence is speaking volumes about what it going on in his life.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

They won't talk about it on the record.

Gino (The Bronx)

I?d rather chomp into a black-charred Thanksgiving turkey than watch Audley Harrison fight again.

Rodney (Cali)

SIR DAN...name your favourite fighter who has at least 50% of his body covered in Tatoos

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Johnny Tapia?

Nick (Harrisburg, PA)

Good seeing you at the fight last saturday dan...made sure not to interrupt u while u were posting the blog

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Nick The Freak! Good to meet you also and thanks for waiting until I was done writing my story on the fight.

Paul (Durham, NC)

Dan, greetings from Duke country! I drove up to Atlantic City last weekend for my first live fight (unbelievable weekend!). Was it just me or did it seem weird that Boardwalk Hall didn't have at least one video screen? You'd think that for a fight as big as Martinez vs. Williams they would have set something up for the replays.

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

From what I recall there has never been screens in Boardwalk Hall. At ringside, we can see replays on the tv monitors but not all that easily at times. It's not the best setup, I agree.

gene (denver)

King freak, just wondering...if I were to win the lotto here, how much would I have to pay you for you to let me copy your entire boxing library?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

A lot.

Brandon Rios (Margarito's jock)

Why is everyone down on Mayweather? That man is nothing but pure f'in class.

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

LOL.

Gino (The Bronx)

Buy or sell, Jeter remains a Yankee?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Buy.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

By the way Freaks, there is no live Telefutura on Friday night but there are two library fights that will be replayed if you missed them: JM Marquez vs. Joel Casamayor and Victor Ortiz vs. Roberto David Arrieta. Marquez-Casamayor was a PPV fight that was never replayed so if you missed it (and it was a great knockout) this is your chance to see it.

Jim (Austin)

Dan, I am originally from Philadelphia (born and raised) and have thus far refused to go to a live fight until I make my way to the Blue Horizon...freak or just an idiot?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Gigantic idiot.

Jeff (Greensboro)

I just read David Haye got the WBA fighter of the year award. For what??????????

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

The Ducker and the odious WBA deserve each other.

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

By the way I hope you are all following me on Twitter @danrafaelespn

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

Dan, you've been to a lot of different venues covering the fights. Whats your favorite place to watch a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

There are so many great arenas I have been to for fights but I have to say that Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand feel like a second home to me.

Arod (NYC)

Do you think Mayweather ever fights again? He appears to be on an Epic down fall

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

If he's not in prison he will fight again. At some point, if nothing else, he will need the money.

Tom (Pittsburgh)

I agree the fight last weekend wasn't the same without lamps, but in bob pappa's defense, that knockout came out of NOWHERE. I didn't even have time to get excited sitting on the couch.. my jaw just dropped.

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

No excuse. Foreman's KO of Moorer came out of nowhere too and Lampley made one of the greatest calls of all time.

chico ((Patterson, CAA))

Hypothetical question...If Bika upsets Ward, lets say by KO, does he have any chance of moving on in the super six?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

None because it is not a tourney fight. He is not in the Super Six and whatever happens, Ward has already advanced to the semis.

Joel (Queens,NY)

I heard Emmanuel Steward say that "Tommy Hearns would toy with Pacquiao" what are your thoughts on that?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

I tend to agree. Too big, too long, too powerful.

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

AWESOME!!! https://www.6mdm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/MicroSiteBView?langId=-1&storeId=1001

Bubba (ottawa il)

"it happens,it happens". I love jim lampley. The best of all time. IMO

JonG (queens)

O man wed chat I had no idea! glad i came on to check the rankings

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Good man.

Eliace (Australia)

Dan, maybe i missed something but why is the chat on Wednesday now?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Special holiday week thing. We have no ESPN chats on Friday and with such a big weekend coming and a huge fight last weekend I wanted to do one this week so I asked to move to Wednesday.

dantheboxingfan (flanders nj)

Hey Dan, I must have watch the Martinez KO about 85 times since it aired...let's take a poll.

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

I think I have watched about 78 times, so you have me beat.

Dr. K (Texas)

Are you on twitter?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

@danrafaelespn

John (Boston)

Dan I love Bill Simmons but he was bragging about a "massive" 3hr chat. That's amateur hour... you do a 3hr chat every week

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

He'll learn.

Steve (Hartford)

Any word on Judah's next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Nothng specific but he is supposed to fight Mabuza for a vacant belt.

brad (encino)

I've noticed in your articles you say mayweather accused pacquiao of using ped's "without proof." What would you consider proof? A positive test? He refuses to take an adequate testing regimen. A confession? he has no reason to confess. would anything short of a confession or positive test convince you?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

So you can just go around accusing somebody of doing something wrong without a shred of proof of any kind? I think you killed your mother and I am going to the media to tell them you did. How would you like that?

Dan fan (NY)

Apparently Ines Saenz is working the Top Rank PPV in December. Shouldn't they get her to brush up on her English? I found the pieces involing her to be pretty painful.

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

They hurt worse than Williams' face.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

"would anything short of a confession or positive test convince you?" - Hey Brad! Welcome to America, ya know the place where you are innocent until proven guilty!!!!

Carlton (NJ)

Just got home. For some reason - I misplaced my wallet.....

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Call the WBA lost and found.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat. I'l have features on the Ward-Bika fight and Marquez-Katsidis fight coming in the next day or so and a new blog as well. So be sure to check 'em out. Have a great Thanksgiving and enjoy the great lineup of fights this weekend and report back here at about midnight Saturday for an RAD chat. Peace.
