Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks to our RAD chat. What a helluva night of fights. Marquez-Katsidis topping the HBO tripleheader in a tremendous fight. Ward-Bika and Froch-Abraham on Showtime. Plus Top Rank Live, which I haven't even watched yet. So much to discuss. Let's get to it.

Julio (DFW)

Marquez went to 135 and beat Casamayor, Diaz, and Katsidis, arguably the 3 best in that division. What else does he need to do to get a third fight with Pacquiao?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 AM)

If Mayweather continues to duck, Marquez should get the fight. Let Mosley and Berto fight each other and the winner can get Pacquiao after that if he's still standing.

jonathan (Philadelphia, PA)

hey dan..who do u think are berto and maraquez next fights..ill love to see berto fight shane mosley

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 AM)

Why not make Mosley-Berto again? They were supposed to fight in January. It didn't work out for reasons we all know. Let them do it again. Berto still has never fought anyone and Mosley is looking for a big win after two poor performances.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)

What a night of fights solid bouts all around!

Nick (Odessa)

Does anyone in boxing react better to being knocked down than Marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 AM)

You tell me. I can't think of any.

Eliace (Australia)

For a fight that was considered as maybe being fight of the year, the Forch - Abraham fight was a let down.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 AM)

But it was total domination and I was very impressed with Froch.

David (West Texas)

Do you think Berto has what it takes to even challenge pacquiao? I say Berto's stamina is his biggest problem.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 AM)

Berto has yet to do anything to really deserve the fight. That's the issue.

Mark (NYC)

I vote to change Marquez' nickname from "Dinamita" to "Juan Thrilling Combination." Man can that guy put his blows together.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 AM)

LOL. Good call.

Tyler B. (Tupelo MS)

great night of fights. just two comments. More Litzau please, the the berto fight was stopped too early

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 AM)

Litzau fough a good fight against a guy who was clearly not ready to fight. Berto was going to crush Hernandez anyway. The fight was a complete waste of time and money. If the ref didn't stop it then, it would not have been much longer.

Freaks (The World)

We will not accept Berto or Mosley. If not Floyd, we want Pac/JMM. (And we know it won't be Floyd)

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 AM)

Time for Top Rank and Golden Boy to cut the crap and make a deal that is fair to both sides (as long as Mayweather continues to duck or is in jail, whichever).

Duff (Abington, MA)

Who was a bigger let down tonight, Abraham or Caballero?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 AM)

Both stunk. But at least Caballero was competitive.

Robert (Dayton)

I'm all for another Pacquiao-Marquez fight, but it should not be at 147. Is there any chance that Manny agrees to fight at 140 or even 144?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 AM)

If the third fight happens I would hope the weight would be something like 142 or 143.

Lance (Florida)

How did they not know that if Abraham's trunks got wet they would be see through. I could have gone my whole life without knowiing Arthur wears a red jock strap.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 AM)

I'm with you on that one brother.

Julio (DFW)

Caballero was disappointing tonight. There goes his shot at Lopez or Gamboa

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 AM)

Nobody to blame but himself.

Michael M. (San Francisco)

Do you think Ward vs Bute will fight each other?Ward will crush Abraham and then beat either Johnson or Froch and win the Super 6 Tournament.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 AM)

Bute is lined up to fight the winner of the Super Six. If it's Ward I see no reason why the fight won't happen. That is why Showtime signed Bute -- to fight the tourney winner.

OT (West Tex)

Pac should not have to come down....he is a bigger draw than Mar

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 AM)

He is the bigger draw, but it should be a fair fight.

Patrick (NY)

Does anyone believe JMM will beat Pacquiao in the third fight?? Sounds like ppl are saying JMM earned his right to lose to Pacquiao.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 AM)

Maybe so. But it's the best option other than Mayweather for Pacquiao because it would generate more money than Mosley or Berto IMO.

Justin M. (Irvine, CA)

Does anyone believe Pacquiao won any of the two fights vs JMM?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 AM)

Some do. I was at both and had Marquez winning both closely.

Joel (Queens,NY)

Can Froch-Johnson be a better matchup? Definitly a fight of the year canidate for next year!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 AM)

Froch-Johnson is a good fight. More interesting than Ward-Abraham to me.

Kern (Riverside, CA)

Dan-o-Lantern, where do you see Katsidis going from here?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 AM)

Some time off and then I see no reason why he's not right back in a meaningful fight.

Juan (PR)

Andre Ward is a hell of a fighter. Where does he land after tonight in your P4P?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 AM)

He will move up. Plenty of moves to be made before the next set come out in a couple of weeks between Martinez drilling Williams and the results from tonight. I have not thought about it yet.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

You've gotta respect someone like Andre Ward who will fight a physically strong, rugged fighter... one who doesn't make you look good... when he doesn't have to.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 AM)

Ward is impressive because he can basically fight any style. He can box. He be dirty. He can fight physically. He does everything well. He's smart He's in great condition. I really don't see a weakness in his game.

Max (Philly)

120-108 in Oakland? Andre Ward got a big-time hometown decision...I had that fight 114-114

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 AM)

Your score sucks as much as the dude who had it 120-108.

BigLarry (Indiana)

I wanted 2 check out ward but hey I've got HBO. Marquez looked hurt bad. He fights on instinct really well. It's like he does it w/o knowing when he is hurt.

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 AM)

Marquez has a knack for quick recovery when hurt. Some guys have it, some guys don't.

Mark (NYC)

They should've announced Marquez' trunks as "Black with Urine Trim."

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 AM)

LOL!

Frank (NYC)

With the animosity between TR and GBP, if Pac/Marq 3 gets made we could see some great 24/7 stuff for the buildup. Perhaps similar to what the Super Six has brought us. Behind the scenes and stuff.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 AM)

I'd like to see that. And more urine drinking!

matt (denver)

Dan, can we get some big props for Froch on an incredible performance? He really showed a different level tonight and is sure underrated if anything.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 AM)

Froch deserves all the credit in the world for completely dominating a good fighter. He was even more dominant against him than Dirrell was.

ching (manila)

martinez is very annoying these days calling out pac. don't you think he should fight his own size or he's in the right time to call pac out @ 154?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 AM)

He isn't calling him out. He is asked about fighting him. Should he say no? Please.

butch (from the Cape)

Who made the biggest statement tonight: Berto,Litzau,Marquez or Froch? My money's on Froch

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 AM)

My order: Froch, Marquez, Litzau, Berto.

Kieran (Arlington VA)

Froch has built himself a pretty good resume - his win against Pascal looks great now. That being said, should Abraham now go back to 160 and fight Sergio? Probably the biggest payday for Sergio at 160.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 AM)

Abraham isn't getting Martinez first off. He is signed to the Super Six, which means he would next fight Andre Ward in the semis.

Jimmy (Arlington, Va)

Has Andre Berto ever been knocked out as an amatuer? Manny Steward mentioned that he had/has a suspect chin as an amateur and a pro.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 AM)

Berto was stopped as an amateur.

Tony (Tampa)

I thought Bika had a great showing for himself against Ward. Do you think he regrets not having the box off with Allan Green to get in the Super Six?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 AM)

I doubt it because he made good money tonight and who knows if he would have gotten a title opportunity had he gone that route? No sense in looking back for him.

Mark (NYC)

With action like tonight's, just guessing the two drink RAD minimum will have been sufficiently reached by all participants. I can't even imagine some of the drunken lunacy that'll be coming your way.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 AM)

You should see the insanity on Twitter as I was tweeting all night during the fights.

Paul (Texas)

After tonight, I'm not sure you're going to get a legitimate fight of the year candidate for 2010.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 AM)

There have been a few really good ones, but no great ones so far. The possibilities are dwindling.

Aaron (MI)

Does Abraham need a complete overhaul or is it to late??

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 AM)

He's 30 and has been routed in his last two fights. Old dogs don't change their spots.

Chris (Boston)

As much as DiBella wants big fights for Martinez, the only fights that look reasonable and realistic is Pirog, Sturm and Paul Williams III. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 AM)

Read my blog from the other day. Details everything.

Tommy (Detroit)

How about Caballero/Pacqauio?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 AM)

Drunk already?

Wayne (Chicago)

Why isnt Berto getting any love at all???

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 AM)

He looked good against a stiff.

J in FLA (Merritt Island, FL)

Dan, what are your thoughts on Lemiuex vs Martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 AM)

Too soon.

Banishment (basement)

Helloooooooo Tommy!

Roberto (Miami, FL)

I'm just catching some of these "twixchanges" you had with Mosley just now...sensational.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 AM)

All in fun and honesty. I love Shane. Nothing against him at all. He wants the Pacquiao fight and cannot convince the majority of the media or fans he should get it.

Juan (PR)

Results from the Fox Deportes fights?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 AM)

Giovani Segura TKO7 Manuel Vargas and Miguel Vazquez W12 Ricard Dominguez to retain IBF 135 title.

Zack (Manila)

Manny should be the fighter of the year, he fought a guy 17 pounds above his weight...everyone fought near their weight class

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 AM)

He fought a guy who made the contract weight. Martinez is the fighter of the year to me.

Aaron (MI)

Set the record straight for us. What is going on with Mosley and Golden Boy? Mosley saying he is a free agent. Does that mean he is done with Golden Boy? Your take please..

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 AM)

My take is that he believes that even as a part owner of GB he can fight for another promoter. GB probably disputes that unless he wants to give back his 5% of the company. But since I do not have copies of the contracts I can't say for sure. I do know this -- GB has made Shane a ton of money and got him his biggest payday ever against Mayweather and from what I am told he hasn't even had the decency to return calls from Richard Schaefer. So who knows what is up?

marcos (wa)

Thank you Marquez Brothers!! Never in a bad fight!

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 AM)

Amen.

Charles R. (Jax, Fl.)

DTM, me and my friend Andre were discussing Cotto-Margs. We need your opinion on what would be the best title for the fight if it comes off. He picked Cotto-Margarito "All Leather" and I like "Cotto-Margarito "Unloaded" what do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 AM)

I think you both need to think about it more and come up with something that doesn't stink.

brian (scottsdale, az)

thanks for the twitter updates, don't have showtime/hbo so was nice to get a feel for what happend.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 AM)

Glad you enjoyed.

Ivan (AZ)

Canelo vs Pacman! What was Larry on tonight? Good publicity for Canelo but even JCCjr would beat him at this point, wouldnt you agree?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 AM)

Yeah, that was out of left field.

Ralph (NY)

Any chance for a Cotto-Berto fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 AM)

I'd like to see that but it seems unlikely. Arum wants to make Margarito-Cotto 2.

J in FLA (Merritt Island, FL)

Dan , do you have any inside info on what exactly are the problems that Kelly Pavlik is having and just can't say what they are? Everything I read about his situation is so cryptic.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 AM)

He's in alcohol rehab.

FREDDY (LOS ANGELES)

Why are so many people underestimating Juan Manuel Marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 AM)

Who underestimates him? He's the legit lightweight champ and in everyone's top 5 p4p.

Travis (NJ)

Dan, can you give us some early thoughts on Khan-Maidana? I think Maidana has a legitmate shot and don't see why he is a 2.5:1 dog.

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 AM)

He can punch and I am told he is in great shape. But I think other than one-shot power, Khan is better in every facet of the game. We shall see. I am looking forward to that fight and will be there ringside for it in two weeks.

Lee (Salisbury, MD)

DTM, how far away do you think Fernando Guerrero is from challenging the top of the division at 160 (Martinez, Sturm, or Pirog)

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 AM)

I would say at least a year. Still not polished and has a lot of work to do. But I like his potential a lot. I thought he had a harder time than I expected last week with Saul Duran.

Bob (Boston)

Abraham-Froch was hands down the most disappointing fight of the year.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 AM)

Blame Abraham for not showing up.

Mike (Pa)

Next week on hbo Latino if I press the SAP button on my tv do I get English ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 AM)

No.

PADDY (GLASGOW)

How about Ward leaves Oakland for once and fights Abraham in Germany?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 AM)

The semis will be in the US. Once Dirrell bailed on the fight with Ward the only place to put it was Oakland, which was the only place to sell a ticket since Bika means nothing at the gate.

jonathan (los angeles)

katsidis vs marquez.... bad stoppage?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 AM)

Knowing the kind of fierce warrior Katsidis is and having seen him come back, I would have liked the referee to let it go just a little longer.

Bart (New York)

Juanma or Gamboa

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 AM)

Are you going to ask a question or just keep jamming that idiocy into the question queue?

J in FLA (Merritt Island, FL)

Remember this. Kahn was also better in every aspect than Prescott too.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 AM)

Not power. And Khan is much improved since then anyway.

Paul (Cutronoville (Staten Island))

How about Bute vs Bika II?...Bute has to keep busy...Also...what about the Loooovvvve Child?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 AM)

I don't see Bute messing with Bika next. For what? He already beat him easily and Bika is dangerous and can be dirty. No point to it. As for the second part -- Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Paul Williams (HBO)

yo dandy reid, know what im sayin, Freddy Hernandez got dropped worse than me know what im sayin. i hope this eliminates me from ko of the year know what im sayin.

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 AM)

No I don't know what you're sayin' because Freddy didn't go to sleep.

Albert (Chicago)

like the to the point responses. Do you always chat after fights on Saturday night?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 AM)

If I am not at a fight and there is a reason to do one, meaning if there is an HBO or Showtime card, I try to.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 AM)

I love that Marquez and Katsidis are trending worldwide on Twitter right now! That is awesome.

mark (bloomington)

Dan-iel san can I get honorary freak status for my girl. This is the third straight weekend she has let us stay home and watch the fights and not complained once

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 AM)

Impressive.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

How about Katsidis-Guerrero sometime in mid or late 2011 ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 AM)

I'd like to see that fight and I think it's a fight more than worthy for HBO. Would be a great BAD main event.

Randy (NYC)

I feel bad for those that bought tickets to the Berto fight. Not because it was over so fast, but because they were dumb enough to buy the tickets

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 AM)

Relax. NOBODY bought a ticket for Berto's fight. They bought a ticket for Marquez-Katsidis.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 AM)

One Freak just suggested Katsidis-Brandon Rios. Would be a war. But forget about it as long as Top Rank and Golden Boy act like babies.

Ignacio Ortiz (Oxnard CA)

Can Bute convince Stegilitz to fight him in Canada and unify the titiles or will he stay in Germany and make easy defenses?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 AM)

I would imagine Bute's people will approach them but who knows if he will come over here.

Joe (Ellsworth Air Force Base)

Larry Merchant said that Berto didnt deserve to be on the short list to fight Pac. Even AFTER that KO he still doesnt deserve to be on that short list.

Juanma (Puerto Rico)

Ha HA Ha-- keep talking smack Celestino.

PADDY (GLASGOW)

Dan did you say BOTH semi finals are in the US? Froch-Johnson would get a much bigger gate in the UK.

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 AM)

As per the Showtime master contract, the semis and finals are in the US. Period.

Andoni (Las Vegas,NV)

Is Montiel-Donaire a done deal??

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 AM)

As long as they don't lose. Feb. 19 at Mandalay Bay on HBO's BAD.

Ivan (Az)

So Dan can you confirm that Marquez ability to recover comes from his urine consumption?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 AM)

I can neither confirm nor deny.

Randy (NYC)

Aside from being attractive, Frochs' girlfriend sure can scream

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 AM)

My ears are still ringing. But she's nothing compared to Tracy Byrd, Chris' wife.

Jeff (Sydney)

Ia Pacquiao avoiding Marquez in your opinion?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 AM)

No. Pacquiao is the one with the leverage and the one who calls the shots. He's not avoiding anyone. He and his team make the best business decision for them.

ching (manila)

Mosley is making bad publicity for pac-jmm in twitter. He says jr. middleweight champ vs. the lightweight champ. Fire back Dan !

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 AM)

Shane is entitled to his opinions. I'm not going insult the old man.

Igor (Dallas)

I love my Dan Rafael during the drunken stupor times.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 AM)

These are my readers.

Isaac (Vegas)

I haven't seen 1 good thing said about Berto on this chat tonight. Are we forgetting the dude is still 27-0 with 21 KOs??

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 AM)

Are you forgetting he has fought dreck?

dylan (austin)

Mosley made enough noise to get the Mayweather fight... if it worked once, why wouldn't it work again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 AM)

Because Floyd took him to the woodshed and then, more important, Mosley looked terrible vs. Mora.

Cesar (New Jersey)

Dan, I always thought Caballero was overrated and was picking on smaller guys and would get exposed as soon as he moved up. Do you agree with that assesment?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 AM)

No, I just think that between moving up in weight and obviously not taking the fight too seriously, he lost to a very determined opponent.

Jamison (Redway, CA)

Litzau has certainly turned things around. Back to back wins over Rocky Juarez and Celestino Caballero. Any interest in Litzau against Jorge Linares? And since Larry Merchant brough him up, how long before Saul Alvarez is ready for Andre Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 AM)

Litzau vs. Linares is an intersting fight for sure.

Matt (Denver)

would you consider quintana Berto's biggest win thus far?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 AM)

No, I would say it was Collazo.

Travis (NJ)

Well, I just lost the O/U of 1.5 on the usage of dreck tonight. Doh!

Jose (NY)

I cut some Mosley some slack on Mora fight- he justdidn't get up for that fight. I think Mosley vs Cotto II and winner gets Pacman

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 AM)

Cotto-Mosley 2 would be just fine by me.

Ricardo (Bronx, NY)

Note to Bob Papa: When you have a sensational one punch KO, listen to Lampley's call and take notes.

Jake C. (Florida)

Dan, did you really think Froch/Abraham should have been stopped? I'm watching rounds 11-12 and this is just typical Abraham. He's not getting Briggs'd or anything.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 AM)

There was no telling blow but after like round 10 what was the point of going on? I wouldn't have minded a stoppage.

Chuyito81 (Austin, TX)

Dan, why not write an article demanding Marquez get a 3rd shot at Pc. Even you had Marquez winning there last fight 114-113. Honestly who else gives Pac so much problems? Oh yeah Trinidad responded extremely well after being dropped.

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 AM)

I have blogged about it. In fact, I wrote an extensive piece about it before the Margarito fight with Pacquiao was made.

James (New York)

Did one judge really have that fight a shutout for Ward? Did he watch the same fight as me? That was a brawl...nearly every round was close.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 AM)

Agreed. Not a shutout at all.

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 AM)

Just got a call from Dan Goossen on the Bat Phone. Told me that when asked to compare them, Bika said Ward was a tougher opponent for him than Bute (who he lost to a few years ago).

FREDDY (LOS ANGELES)

Do you think a Pacquiao v. Marquez fight could generate more money than the one he had with Margarita?(misspelled intentionally)

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 AM)

I think Pacquiao-Marquez 3 is the biggest money fight for Pacquiao other than Mayweather. Obviously.

Brian (DC)

All credit to Katsidis... not only did he fight his heart out, but in the postfight interview he made no excuses whatsoever and just tipped his cap over and over again to a great champion. Refreshing.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 AM)

Could not agree more. Much respect.

Matt (Denver)

I thought 116-112 was a fair score for Ward/Bika. Shame none of the judges agreed.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 AM)

That's the score I had. Even Goossen, Ward's promoter, agreed that Bika won some rounds.

ROB (BELLMORE, NY)

Dan how can you say Froch had the most impressive performance of the night if you also say that Abraham didn't show up?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 AM)

Because part of the reason Abraham looked so bad was because of the fact that Froch was punching him in the head. In other words, Froch gets credit for making Abraham look freaking horrible.

Ian (Wales)

I don't know about you but I'm sick of watching Andre Ward continually fight in Oakland.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 AM)

I don't know about you but I'm sick of hearing dopes continually complain about where Andre Ward fights.

Charles (DFW)

It will be interesting to see how Froch handles Glen Johnson's pressure. I could definitely see an upset there.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 AM)

Froch throws a lot of punches too and has pretty good defense. You have to favor Froch in the fight but you can never count out Johnson.

Isai (OKC)

Better action tonight? Showtime or HBO

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 AM)

Both had their moments. HBO had the best fight of the night with Marquez-Katsidis. Plus HBO had a big upset with Litzau and a nice knockout from Berto, albeit against a nobody. Ward-Bika was a good, interesting fight. Froch-Abraham was a one-sided beat down.

Tom E (Lambertville, NJ)

Do you think that Valuev's presence in the crowd influenced Abraham's decision to lay a Valuev sized poop in the ring?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 AM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Shaun (TX)

Dan, you just HAD to make a tweet about the Abraham/Froch fight before it aired live on Showtime didn't you. Thanks for nothing punk.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 AM)

If you didn't want to know the result of the fight before it aired why would you go on Twitter? Seriously, think about that punk.

Isai (OKC)

When do see the semifinals happening? Might be smart to put them both in the same venue on the same night.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 AM)

I think the semis probably are ticketed for March but I am not sure if they will be same night and same venue. Really do not know. All up in the air.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, in regards to HOF inductees do you see Kostya Tszyu makng first time out? Did you ever have the pleasure of interviewing him? Was he a top 5 140 lber all-time?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 AM)

I voted for Tszyu and I believe he makes it on the first ballot. Result are announced in about 10 days. I did interview him multiple times. He was a guy who was thoughtful with his answers. I interviewed him several times. One I recall well was when he was at Foxwoods for a fight I was covering (I think Corrales-Freitas) and we had a very good, lengthy interview on a lot of topics. And I do think he is one of the top few 140s in boxing history.

matt (denver)

people can never grasp the idea that you AVOID the internet when a fight is on tape-delay from European soil.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 AM)

It's because they are stupid. When I want to avoid a result I got military style. Blackberry off. Make my wife answer the home phone. No internet. No ESPN. No nothing. I am not kidding. It's like a miltiary plan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 AM)

One time I tried to avoid the result of Wladimir Klitschko-Corrie Sanders until HBO showed it on tape. I made the mistake of picking up the phone and before I could say a word I have DiBella on the other end going crazy and yelling about Klitschko getting knocked out. From that moment forward, if I wanted to avoid a result I hunkered down. No excuses.

Mike (NYC)

Hey Dan not sure if you know the results but did Nate Campbell lose tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 AM)

Yes, if you followed me on twitter @danrafaelespn you would know he lost a split decision to journeyman Walter Estrada in a fight his own adviser said Nate clearly lost and that it should have been unanimous. His adviser, Terry Trekas, said bluntly that Nate was done and he should retire.

Charles (DFW)

How about another RAD December 11? Big HBO doubleheader and the Showtime bantamweight tourney.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 AM)

Not happening. I will be in Vegas at the Khan-Maidana fight.

brian (paradise)

Ward is all class and a credit to the sport I can't see why so many people dislike him all he does is win

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 AM)

Ward is tremendous. I see no weakness in his game right now.

john (rochester)

first time i've ever seen caballero. underwhelmed is a word that comes to mind

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 AM)

If that was your first time seeing him then I am not surprised to see you write that. He did not look good at all tonight like he usually has.

Charles (DFW)

With Hasegawa winning a featherweight title, does his name get thrown in the mix for Gamboa or Juanma? I doubt he's much of a threat to either and he has a name.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 AM)

Doubtful because he is unknown here and has never made any noise about wanting to come to the US.

Little Red Riding Hood (Fantasyland)

Abraham stole my red underwear...

ROB (BELLMORE, NY)

Dan, legit champ v. #1 contender, great storyline (Katsidis' brother's death), great two way action all fight, and a fighter coming back from a knockdown to get the TKO - how was that not a great FOY candidatew

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 AM)

Of course it's a candidate. But it's a candidate in a year that has been weak. It may very well win, but it's not an all-time great fight like so many recent winners have been. This has been a year with some very good fights, including tonight's, but nothing that absolutely blows the doors off like an Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez or Gatti-Ward or Somasak-Monshipour or even JM Marquez-Diaz 1 or Paul Williams-Sergio Martinez 1.

Rob (New York)

Any idea on where Caballero goes from here? He's 34 and severely hurt his case for a Juanma or Gamboa fight imo.

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 AM)

No idea. But he severely hurt himself tonight. Severely.

Jim (NJ)

The crowd looked pretty weak for the JMM fight? Why so few fans?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 AM)

I am told by folks in the arena they drew maybe 3,500 to 4,000. That is pathetic. I think the holiday weekend hurt badly. I think coming on the heels of big hyped fights like Pacquiao-Margarito didn't help. It did not have a lot of publicity relative to the previous week's Martinez-Williams rematch. Just bad timing.

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 AM)

Official attendance of Marquez-Katsidis was 4,920. I'm sure there were a ton of comps. I will be interested to see the official Nevada ticket report.

Jimmy (Arlington, Va)

Any idea what the attendance was in Finland?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 AM)

No, but Steve Farhood and I traded emails and he told me it was cold -- 9 degrees.

Pat (NY)

Marquez has knocked out Kats, Diaz and casamayor...wow

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 AM)

Yup. And beat Manny Pacquiao twice in my opinion.

roberto (laredo, tx)

DTM, thanks RAD!!!! Have you watch Geovanni Segura tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 AM)

I have it on DVR. Can't watch three things at once.

Joel (Queens,NY)

Is Marquez just as great as Pacquiao? Or is Pacquiao just on another level

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 AM)

Marquez is also a great fighter. They had two close fights with each other when both were in their primes. I am glad we as fans have had both of them in the same era.

Jason (Australia)

Yo, Joel, many think Marquez beat Pac - how can you suggest that Pac is on another level?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 AM)

Exactly.

GH (PA)

I didn't think Froch's girlfriend could be any hotter, and then I saw her tonight. OMG!

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 AM)

Now don't say I never did you any favors. I tweeted the link to this earlier, so you should be following me on Twitter but here it is again for all the Freaks: http://tinyurl.com/23yj2lj

Joel (Queens,NY)

Buy or Sell: Caballero vs Litzau II?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 AM)

Sell because I see absolutely no reason why HBO would buy that again.

miguel (los angeles)

holy crap DAN i love that pic you are the man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 AM)

I try.

Tom E (Lambertville, NJ)

YES!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 AM)

I am assuming to liked the photo?

Brandon (DSM)

DTM, is it true that Abraham announced on German TV that he will no longer take part in the Super 6?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 AM)

That's the rumor. I am unaware if it is true. He certainly didn't say anything like that on Showtime's interview.

Erik (atlanta, ga)

dear god D$$ we are not worthy!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 AM)

Sorta like Elaine's Christmas card on Seinfeld right?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 AM)

From Richard Schaefer at the post fight news conference: "My phone is on, Bob Arum has my number. If the Pacquiao vs. Marquez III fight isn't happening, it's not because of Golden Boy"

Mike (Chandler, AZ.)

God bless Dan Rafael......great photo!

Charles (DFW)

I know this has been done to death, but didn't one of the judges im Pac-JMM I give Pac a 10-7 first round instead of 10-6? If so, it should have been a SD win for Pacquiao.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 AM)

Like I have said many times, I scored round 1 10-6 and still had Marquez winning.

Keith (Philly)

Yo Dan.. do you think Berto helped or hurt his chances for landing a fight vs. Pac tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 AM)

If anything he helped at least given that he didn't hurt it if you know what I mean. He did score a fairly sensational knockout.

Mike (NYC)

As great as Katsidis/Marquez was....Marquez dominated that fight hands down with the exception of the knock down. It shows as great a fight Kats was giving Marquez was just that much more dominant.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 AM)

It was a terrific but a bit of a one-sided fight other than the knockdown, but there was defintely drama.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 AM)

By the way if you missed my Tweet earlier, got word earlier tonight that this fight has been agreed to: Sauerland will promote Brian Neilsen vs Evander Holyfield in Denmark on March 5.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)

I would have loved to see Katsidis vs Gatti! I'm just saying!

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 AM)

OMG.

Jason (Australia)

It was a helluva left hook that put Marquez down though, more props to Marquez for coming back from it.

JJD (Seattle)

Does Brendon Smith have any other high-level fighters besides Katsidis? He came off as quite an excellent trainer tonight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 AM)

The only fighter I know that Brendon trains is Michael, but he may have some other guys in Australia.

Patrick (NY)

What photo is everyone talking about? link please lol....

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 AM)

Go look at the transcript.

Eric (DFW, TX)

If Katsidis vs Gatti would have ever happened, you probably could have given it fight of the year award before it even happened. Guaranteed war.

dylan (austin)

what'd she drop down there?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 AM)

LOL!!!!!!!! That's what I was thinking!

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

How much trouble did you think Marquez was in after Katsidis knocked him down? I know he handles adversity well, but he wasn't 100% after that shot... (at least at that moment)

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 AM)

I thought he was in some trouble, but honestly, knowing Marquez I actually thought ultimately he would be just fine.

Isai (OKC)

Berto didn't even get touched today. He should come back very soon for his next fight. No reason for him to wait another six months for a fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 AM)

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. He will sit around waiting for HBO to clear a date and overpay him.

Joel (Queens,NY)

boy would i like to be whatever fell down her shirt LOL

Jason (Australia)

DTM loving the chat, first time on live (normally read during the week) - you either have a great work ethic or you just simply love what you're doing. Many props.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 AM)

I don't have to do this at all. Believe me. I do it because it's fun.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

late night freaks/perverts lol

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 AM)

This is so true. You should see what I don't post.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

Didn't Ross Greenburg say Berto would be in a major fight next or not fight on HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 AM)

He did say it. Now it's time to deliver.

Gabe (Houston TX)

those beautiful body punches by Marquez is what told the story and ultimately finished katsidis

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 AM)

Marquez is nasty to the body.

Gerardo (AZ)

"I thought he was in some trouble, but honestly, knowing Marquez I actually thought ultimately he would be just fine." Same way I felt.

dg (oaktwn)

what kind of roids does pacman take

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 AM)

What kind of moron pills do you take?

Rob (New York)

Is Litzau promoted by Dibella?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 AM)

No, Jason is with Roy Jones' Square Ring.

Lee (Salisbury, MD)

DTM, I saw you and Max having what looked to be a "heated" discussion last week in A.C early in the night. For future references, where's the place to be in A.C to talk boxing before the fights?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 AM)

Max and I did have a heated, but very friendly discussion, about things related to Pacquiao-Mayweather. I wish I had recorded it because it would have been an epic podcast.

Charles (DFW)

How did Erislandy Lara look tonight? I'm assuming he won. I didn't see it on the ESPN Twitter updates.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 AM)

Lara won by KO1. No shock considering his opponent.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)

I heard Erik Morales name brought up as a potential opponent for JMM assuming he doesn't get Manny is that even a sellable fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 AM)

Richard Schaefer would like to do that fight in Mexico City. If JMM doesn't get Pacquiao I can see that fight generating a lot of interest and money in Mexico and I could see it on PPV in the US.

Charles (DFW)

Was the third round tonight a Round of the Year candidate? Marquez was down, clearly hurt and came back to hurt Katsidis and take control of the round.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 AM)

Defintely a round of the year candidate.

Will (Flushing)

If Abraham drops out of the Super Six, do you see Bute stepping in.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 AM)

No, Bute is not joining the Super Six.

Jimmy (Arlington, Va)

What weight is Morales fighting at right now?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 AM)

138ish.

Alan (Plantation, FL)

DTM, I am going to be in Vegas Jan. 20-24th anyy chance there will be any fights in Vegas that weekend? Btw, any steakouse suggestions?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 AM)

At this point that weekend seems doubtful for a Vegas fight.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Many have suggested it, and now I'll repost it. ESPN needs to make a weekly boxing show with BK and DTM. Let's do it already.

Charles (DFW)

My fiance asked me today if I planned to record every fight that comes on from now on. In a calm voice, I said not only the new ones, but every ESPN Classic airing (except the Best of Butterbean). I've got a collection to build here, man.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 AM)

Good man. I started doing that in like 1994 and the collection has taken on a life of its own.

Arthur Abraham (Finland)

I came all the way to Helsinki... and all I have to show for it is my bright red underwear..

jrod (rancho cucamonga)

what do you see as the potential best mtach up on next weeks TR card?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 AM)

I think the main event should be a lively fight but I am personally interested in seeing Donaire against a quality opponent in Sidorenko. And Soto-Antillon should be a good action fight.

Ochs (Webster, NY)

As amazing as he was, JMM was backing up a lot in this fight with a guy who has zero head movement. I can't see him beating Manny at this point (and don't forget, 1 judge mis-scored the first round of their first fight)

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 AM)

You make a good point. Marquez had some trouble with a straight ahead guy like Katsidis who had him in some trouble. Manny is MUCH faster, moves better, gives more angles and is bigger. As great as Marquez is and has exciting as his win was tonight, let's keep what he did tonight in some perspective. I know it's easy to get lost in the heat of the moment.

JJD (Seattle)

I've given it nearly 20 minutes and I can't muster the energy for a sarcastic comment on Neilsen/Holyfield. Pathetic.

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 AM)

Not as pathetic as the fight being on.

Bing (Banishment)

Twitter is just another way to spoil the results to take the limelight away from the fighters.

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 AM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhh, the great Bing making a RAD appearance.

Rick (Marina)

Im watching sportscenter and felt a little insulted when the sports ticker just gave the results from the berto, ward and froch fights but no results on JMM-Katsidas fight, what a bunch crap.

Jason (Australia)

2:00am Dan, you nocturnal?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 AM)

Feels that way sometimes.

Alan (Plantation, FL)

Dan, what happened to Alexander-Bradley fighting in Miami?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 AM)

That was a possibility at one time and it appears as though it ain't happening there. Places like Detroit and St. Louis under discussion.

Twitter (The Internet)

Seems to me Olympic rules apply for these tape-delay fights. As a journalist, Dan has a responsibility to report the news as it happens.

Carlos (Colorado Springs)

Sometimes I really wish that I could watch the undercard fights. Is there anyway the networks could stream them online?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 AM)

Often, Top Rank streams their undercard on their web site and for big PPVs those undercard fights are often streamed on ESPN.com's boxing page.

Brandon (Houston)

I just saw the JMM-Katsidis recap on the bottom line of SC...

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 AM)

You want a medal?

Igor (Big D)

What did you talked about for the Klitschko documentary?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 AM)

I was interviewed at length last week in Atlantic City for a docu being produced on their lives and careers. We spoke about numerous topics about both brothers. Many of their fights, particularly ones I covered as well as the view of them in America. The trailer the director showed me looked fabulous.

Mike (Baltimore, Md)

Dan, would you put Froch's resume over Calzaghe's? I think he's fought and beaten the better competition.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 AM)

I would not go that far at all. He has a lot of work to do the reach that point.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, I think we should make asking the question, "if _______ drops out of the Super Six, will Bute be in it?", a banishment worthy question. You've answered these idiots dozens of times.

Ned (Hartford)

Not quite banishment worthy, but Mike from Baltimore needs an all expenses paid trip to Hartford

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Froch's resume doesn't begin to compare to Calzaghe's. Lacy, Kessler, B-Hop? C'mon.

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 AM)

Calzaghe gets points for longevity and he beat numerous quality contenders in his day. Go look at his resume. He also happened to beat Kessler when he was undfeated and well before Froch lost to him.

jon (jersey city)

will any of the sanctioning bodies consolidate for the benefit of the sport?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 AM)

Why would any alphabet body ever do anything for the benefit of the sport? They only do things that benefit themselves.

Joey (Charleston, SC)

What nonexistent comeback do you get asked about more, Mike Tyson or Joe Calzaghe?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 AM)

At this point, probably Calzaghe because I think most people (except a few idiots on some small web sites) accept the fact that Tyson is not coming back.

PADDY (GLASGOW)

Dan why do you always refer to David Haye as ducker when your not privy to injuries, negotiations, etc. Haye's the best and most exciting heavyweight out there. keep it respectful.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 AM)

He's A Ducker, with a capital D.

Mike (Baltimore, Md)

Dan, is there any way we could get Ward-Bute before the Super 6 tournament is over?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 AM)

No chance.

Allan Green (Tulsa)

I probably should've been taking notes from Katsidis on how to lose with class.

Diego (Montreal)

You mean keep it respectful like when Haye wore a t-shirt with two severed Klitchsko heads?

Gerardo (AZ)

Paddy, put down the scotch already.

Jason (Australia)

Plenty of weird stuff in the water in Glasgow at the moment.

Suliaman (LV)

"will any of the sanctioning bodies consolidate for the benefit of the sport?" - HA HA HA HA HA HA. That's a good one!

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 AM)

You laugh, but only if you pay a small sanctioning fee, of course.

marc (seattle)

mike in baltimore REALLY?

Alan (Plantation, FL)

Dan, over/under Solis-Austin drawing 3,000 in Miami at an arena built for 19,000

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 AM)

King will get more than 3,000 in there. He'll give a ton of tix away.

Ken (Kissimmee, FL)

I think Froch's girlfriend (and that pic) should be a part of every RAD going forward....WoW!!!

Jason (Australia)

LOL - the press here in Australia are calling the Katsidis stoppage contraversial. Have to disagree - thought the stoppage was fine.

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 AM)

It may have been slighly quick but that is NOT controversial. Even Katsidis did not complain once in the interview.

jon (jersey city)

if hopkins beats pascal, any chance bhop would retire on top?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 AM)

Knowing BHop, if he wins, I don't see any way he doesn't go for the next payday after becoming champion again.

Sean (China)

Dan any news or whereabouts on Left Hook Lacy?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 AM)

He actually has a fight coming up.

marc (seattle)

freaks check this out!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upd_BRON-AQ

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 AM)

Pretty sweet.

Dan (Australia)

let's be honest about the Australian press though..they think Mundine is getting a shot at cotto's belt or at mayweather

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 AM)

They also think Danny Green's win over Roy Jones meant something.

Warm (Small tupperware)

JMM's urine. Your take?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 AM)

Warm and yellow.

Dan (Albuquerque)

who would win at 175 Bob Foster or Bute? Thanks for all your hard work and time you take for the fans.

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 AM)

Please. Bob Foster absolutely destroys him. Please. Please. D-E-S-T-R-O-Y-S. Foster was an all-time great light heavyweight. I have some of his fights from his prime and he was one bad dude.

Jose Sulliman (WBC)

Arthur Abraham has been awarded the WBC Super Duper Red Underwear Belt so he can cover up (for a uhmmm... smallllll sanctioning fee , of course)

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 AM)

By the way, I cannot believe how many people are in this chat considering how darn late it is. I am in awe tonight. This is bigger than some of my Friday afternoon chats.

Tim (Pittsburgh,PA)

Who would you say won their official titles more legitimate, floyd or pac?

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 AM)

What do you mean "official" titles? Pacquiao has won four lineal titles, which is the most in boxing history. He was lineal at 112, 126, 130 and 140. Floyd was lineal at 130, 135 and 147.

Tom E (Lambertville, NJ)

So in other words, the Australian press is as ridiculous as the British press?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 AM)

Let's not get carried away.

JJD (Seattle)

If Floyd and Manny had fought at 130, who would you have favored?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 AM)

The same guy I would favor if they fight at 147.

Jason (Australia)

LOL - only 6:23 pm here mate.

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 AM)

Nice.

Diego (Montreal)

All due respect, but I don't think anyone would DESTROY Bute. If he beats the Super 6 winner, will you put in the top 5 Pfp like he deserves?

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 AM)

Go watch some Foster tapes and get back to me and remember he is a big, bad ass light heavy not a super middle.

Dan (Australia)

Australian press billed the last Mundine fight as a title eliminator saying that the winner got a shot at Cotto. The fight was against Ryan Waters. So everyone out here thinks Mundine is cotto's mandatory

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 AM)

That's pretty funny.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

The Aussie press probably think Danny Green can beat a Klitschko too.

Chris (Rotterdam Jct, NY)

I know this is a captain obvious statement, but no way does Abraham beats Ward. This is Ward's tourney to lose!

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 AM)

The way it seems to me is that the final likely would be Ward-Froch, which is a really good fight.

Carlos (Miami, FL)

Where will we be able to see the Klitscho documentary? Will it be on tv somewhere?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 AM)

It is supposed to be released in theaters in Germany in April. Not sure about the rest of the world.

Mark (Sacramento, CA)

Greatest fight of last 20 years?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 AM)

Corrales-Castillo 1.

Benjamin (Little Rock, Ark.)

Hey, Dan -- do you ever hear from anyone in North America defending Haye, or is it always folks from across the pond?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 AM)

Never. Only the British sycophants.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Hey Dan from Alb., New Mexico.............can you please send whatever it is you are smoking to share with all the freaks..........come on now, you are putting Bute with an all time great like Foster

chuzen (st. louis)

greater round: the final round of corrales - castillo 1, or gatti ward I round 9? im going with gatti ward

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 AM)

Corrales-Castillo 1 10th.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Just like to say props to the Super 6 guys for putting up some pretty flawless records and risking losses to fight the best at 168.

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 AM)

Good point. When they got into this they knew they were in touch time and again.

ROB (BELLMORE, NY)

why do people care so much that Ward fights in Oakland - his wins have been dominant anyway, no home cookin

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 AM)

Exactly. He has beaten Kessler, Green and Bika over the course of 35 rounds and maybe lost 5 of them.

CC boxer (Alexandria, VA)

Dan the Man. Can you believe Winky Wright wants a piece of Sergio Martinez? Your thoughts

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 AM)

I'm sure he would like that fight but he's unlikely to get it because he has done nothing for the past few years and has lost his last two fights, including every single round to the guy Martinez just ruined.

Dan (Albuquerque)

Hey I know Bobby Foster works for the county and we even named a road after him, what I was asking since very few today even know Boby Foster was pointing out how great we was back in the day and not many today could hang with him.

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 AM)

Foster was great. I had a chance to meet him and talk with him a few years ago when he was brought in as part of the promotion for the Jones-Ruiz fights to talk to the press about light heavyweight champs moving up to heavyweight (which he was not successful doing) and he was great to talk to. A real cool guy.

Alan (Plantation, FL)

Dan, if you had to rank the following fighters from the last 20 years how would you rank 'em: Mayweather, De La Hoya, Mosley, Hopkins, Pacquiao, Lewis, Holyfield, RJJ, Morales, Calzaghe, and JMM

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 AM)

Brutal. Off the top of my head, and remember it's like 2:40 am, I'll take a stab at it: Pacquiao, Hopkins, Mayweather, Lewis, Holyfield, Marquez, Jones, Mosley, De La Hoya, Morales, Calzaghe.

Carlos (Miami, FL)

Just wanna say I just started following you on twitter and I look forward to your tweets more than anyone else's...I even saw comedian Gary Owen give you a shout out...keep on keepin us informed Dan! You're the man!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 AM)

Cool, but who is Gary Owen?

Gerardo (AZ)

that is an amazing list

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 AM)

Hard to rank those guys. Man.

Gary Owen (New York)

Ouch bro

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 AM)

Sorry bro. Should I know who you are?

Nate (Lorain, Oh)

Whats Johnny Tapia and Paulie Ayala up 2 these days?

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 AM)

Not sure about Johnny, but I saw Paulie a couple of weeks ago in Dallas. It was great to see him. He looks great, sounds great and seems to be enjoying his life. He has a gym, he works as a personal trainer and boxing instructor.

josh (mississippi)

Dan, I love but also hate fights like katsidis-marquez. its sucks when you have two fabulous guys and one of them has to lose. i felt the same way about pwill-martinez. my question though, do you think that katsidis' stock rose or fell after this fight? he did better than most expected him to, and it was a dog fight for sure.

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 AM)

I don't think Katsidis' stock rose or fell. Honestly, the fight went sorta how I envisioned it in the sense that I always believed he would give a good account of himself, it would be a really good fight and that Marquez would come out on top.

Simon (Fort Worth)

So is this the longest RAD you've ever done? Pushing 3 hrs.

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 AM)

No idea, I've never tracked the RADs.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, I know your a big Duran and SRL fan but does Manny beat either of them at 147?

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 AM)

At 147, I still think Leonard would beat him. At 147, he might beat Duran.

Alan (Plantation, FL)

Dan, liked the list, but I also agree it's hard to rank 'em. For now, I would've put Mayweather 1st followed by Hopkins and then Pacquiao. In my opinion, Mayweather and Pacquiao are interchangeable since they haven't fought each other. I give a slight edge to Mayweather due to him never having lost, and having beaten about six HOFers.

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 AM)

I rank Pacquiao slighly ahead of Mayweather because he won more titles, more lineal titles, beat consistently bigger men and also beat several future Hall of Famers (Marquez, Morales, Barrera, De La Hoya, possibly Hatton and Cotto). Some common opponents as Mayweather. Hopkins I put second because of the massive longevity and several significant wins and two lineal titles to go with all the title defenses. Hey, it's not an exact science.

Gerardo (AZ)

Hey Dan what are you doing tomorrow (other than sleep in, of course)?

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 AM)

I'l write the Monday scorecard, I'll watch the fights I missed (like TR Live), I'l watch a little football, maybe do a few errands.

Tim (Secaucus, NJ)

When is Yuriorkis Gamboa fighting again, Dan?! How would you compare him with Rigondeaux? Who has the more promising career ahead?!

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 AM)

He has no fight scheduled but I expect him back around Feb/March. He is way more exciting than Rigondeaux and younger.

M (IL)

hey dan, love that the reporter covering the fights is as die-hard a fan as any of us freaks

Gerardo (AZ)

Alan just inadvertently made the case for Pacquiao, not Mayweather: Pac has between 9 and 13 wins against hall of famers (vs 6 from Mayweather).

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 AM)

Good point, because he has multiple wins against Morales and Barrera.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC)

I am pleased to announce that we hereby name Dan Rafael all-time greatest super duper RAD Champion, for a small sanctioning fee of course.

Tim (Palo Alto)

What 6 HOFers did Mayweather beat? I count Mosley, Marquez, Oscar DLH. Only way you can get 6 is if you include Hatton, Gatti, Corrales/Castillo.

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 AM)

Maybe Genaro Hernandez makes the HOF someday. But at this point it is safe to say Pacquiao beat more future HOFers than Mayweather has.

Mike (Chandler, AZ.)

I'm back. I had to research Froch's girlfriend on google for the past hour. She is very beautiful and she hopes to cure world hunger.

Cory (Dallas)

D$, wasn't a Caballero-Gamboa fight being setup, where do you think they go with Gamboa now?

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 AM)

I'd like to see him fight Chris John. It's a mandatory fight. John fights next week. If he wins and Top Rank and GB can't make the fight, go to a purse bid and handle it that way.

PADDY (GLASGOW)

Pacquiao-Marquez only done like 300K buys 2 1/2 years ago -- granted Pacquiao's bigger now but it wont be that big IMO.

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 AM)

It does a million-plus.

Anthony (Long Beach, CA)

Dan I can't go to bed until the chat is over. Are you tired yet?

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 AM)

We'll see won't we?

Jason (Australia)

Pushing 3:00am, your wife must hate your job.

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 AM)

Mrs. DTM has been under the weather all day and has been asleep for hours.

Cain (Los Angeles, CA)

How is Jermain Taylor these days...retired?...making a comeback....Love RAD!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 AM)

I have no heard a word about JT in ages. I have no idea what he is up to. Hopefully, enjoying his life and his family.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Paddy, you're officially in the echelon of Bing. You make some stupid comments and questions.

Jimmy (Arlington, Va)

Who are the leading contenders to fight Bute in his fist Showtime fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 AM)

I haven't heard any specific names yet. Hopefully, someone solid. Maybe Stieglitz or Sartison would take the fight.

Don (Miami)

If he can't get mosley or pacquiao to fight him do you think Berto will finally fight selcuk aydin? If he does do you give aydin much of a chance to win?

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 AM)

I have no idea, but it is a mandatory fight. At least Aydin is strong and in his prime and very tough guy.

Gary (Boca Raton, FL)

After watching Caballero tonight, I'd have to think if Caballero-Gamboa ever happens, Gamboa will destroy him. Thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 AM)

Hard to disagree after that sloppy performance tonight. If Caballero wings those wide shots against Gamboa, he'll come inside and demolosh him.

Tim (Palo Alto)

Have you seen anybody recover from a brutal KO like Martinez's on Williams?

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 AM)

Wladimir Klitschko has done well for himself after being drilled by Corrie Sanders (albeit he didn't go to sleep like that).

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

David Haye recovered from a pretty brutal KO against....oh that's right. Nobody.

Nate M (Vermont)

Hey Dan, Speaking of Collazo, what's in store for him? He's been in some very good fights, and in my opinion been shafted in some against bigger name guys. Any opinion on that?

Dan Rafael
  (3:08 AM)

Who knows and who cares? The guy is basically retired. Doesn't fight and has turned down fights.

Brian (Phoenix)

What does RAD stand for?

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 AM)

Rafael After Dark, an homage to HBO's Boxing After Dark.

dylan (austin)

we still deadlocked on a bradley-alexander site? how are you supposed to get the upgrade if you can't book the flight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 AM)

An excellent question my good man.

Mike (Pa)

Bill simmions brags about 3 hours chats and u do them in the am

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 AM)

How dare they challenge me with their primitive skills.

Nick (Odessa)

If no Pac, what about JMM vs Judah

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 AM)

Seriously? Did you hit your head?

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, are you planning on traveling to the Bradley-Alexander fight regardless of where it is?

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 AM)

Definitely.

Ignacio Ortiz (Oxnard CA)

Is showtime showing the morales v barrios fight or is it just Pascal Hopkins on the 18th?

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 AM)

As far as I know, no.

Troy (Athens, GA)

Dan, does Dereck Chisora have even the SLIGHTEST chance against Wladimir? Please give me any reason at all to watch this fight

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 AM)

I think Wladimir blows him out but you never know.

Peter (Ithaca)

Do Popo and Thunder watch the fights with you?

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 AM)

If sleeping on my lap or on the couch is them watching the fights then yes.

Freddy (Los Angeles)

Why didn't Marquez fight Amir Kahn? Wasn't that suppose to happen?

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 AM)

He decided to remain at 135 and fight his mandatory challenger, Katsidis. I have no issue with that and neither should you or anyone.

Jimmy (Arlington, Va)

Do the Marquez brothers travel to each other fights? I can't remember ever seeing either one coming to the other brother's fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:15 AM)

Actually, they rarely attend each other's fights.

Keiran (Syracuse)

I was so happy when Marquez decided to stay at 135lb and not fight Khan. The prospect of a Katsidis-Marquez fight was way more tempting to me than a Khan fight.

Chris (CA)

I watched Chisora fight a couple of times when I was living in England. No way he has a chance against Wlad. Lots of fouls and holding and he was suspended for biting a guys ear in a horrible fight.

Ignacio Ortiz (Oxnard CA)

Who do u like in Soto vs Antillon next week? I think it's a possible FOY candidate!

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 AM)

I lean toward Soto. Should be a good fight though.

Paco (NY)

I just read an article about how Deontay Wilder wants to go to the Olympics in 2012 as heavyweight champ. How far is he realistically from contending with the Klitchsko's?

Dan Rafael
  (3:18 AM)

Maybe someday Deontay will reach his goals but he is a long way from being ready for even a top 10 guy much less the brothers.

Dave (New York )

I was watching the fight with my girl and she felt it was inappropriate that Larry asked Katsidis about his brother. I'm not sure how I feel, what do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 AM)

Perfectly legitimate question. That situation was a major part of the backdrop to this fight. It had to be asked. Sometimes as reporters you don't like the questions you ask but you have to ask them. That is the job.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

I just made the most amazing cheeseburger. Ahh I'm drunk.

Daniel (Cali)

I thought that was a ridiculous question. Especially because Larry said, "do you think he would've been proud of your performance tonight." Gimme a break Larry. Poor choice of words.

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 AM)

I tend to agree. I would have preferred a more straight forward question about preparing for the fight after the death of his brother and how that impacted him and if he thought about not fighting, etc...

Omar (Los Angeles)

DTM I was at a friends house helping him work and the JMM Katsidis fight was on and his GF decided to change it in round 2, didn't even ask if we were watching it. Was I in the wrong for not speaking up?

Dan Rafael
  (3:23 AM)

Yes. I'm surprised you didn't curse her out. You choked dude.

Daniel (Cali)

He should've asked it in a better manner though. Like, did you gain extra motivation for this fight, were you inspired, etc.

Jeff (Sydney)

I heard reports that Golden Boy would be demanding a 50-50 split for the Pac - JMM 3 fight. Now that's ridiculous!!

Dan Rafael
  (3:25 AM)

They know that isn't happening and I doubt they would even go there. That's a non-starter. Manny Pacquiao just drew 30,000-plus paying customers to Cowboys Stadium for a gate of over $5 million and drew 1.15 million PPVs (and that will go up)for $64 million. Marquez struggled to draw more than 4,000 at MGM on live HBO and made $1.4 million. Pacquiao made about $25 million. No way he gets 50-50 and doesn't deserve it.

Keiran (Syracuse)

It annoys me to see that Berto made 900k for his fight tonight.

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 AM)

It was $910,000 while his opponent made $75,000, less than 10%. That is criminal.

Mario Mungia (Corpus Christi, Texas)

Better than berto making 1.2 like some reported

Dan Rafael
  (3:28 AM)

$1.2 is what HBO paid for that piece of crap. Berto made $910,00 of it.

Jeremy O' Connell (Beaufort, Kerry, Ireland)

Props on ur idea for Pac-Marq and Berto-Mosley to have a possible shot at winner

Dan Rafael
  (3:29 AM)

That is assuming Mayweather is unavailable or makes himself so.

Aaron (MI)

Out of the 910K does Berto have to pay his trainer, promotor etc???

Dan Rafael
  (3:29 AM)

His trainer. His promoter takes a cut of the $1.2 million.

Rick (SpringTown, Ca)

DTM- Lets say Abraham does drop out, because he's not beating the Son of God and im sure he knows it. What does Showtime do then? At this point wouldnt they just go straight to the final and do Ward vs. Froch? Good fight, who would you lean to??

Dan Rafael
  (3:30 AM)

I have no idea what Showtime would do. We'll cross that bridge if we come to it.

Alan (Hamilton MT)

Will Kirkland stay out of the joint long enough to get a shot at Martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 AM)

Hopefully.

Isai (OKC)

Do we see a Litzau/Caballero rematch pretty soon. Don't see Litzau going too far.

Dan Rafael
  (3:32 AM)

I have no interest in seeing a rematch. Why?

Rick (SpringTown, Ca)

DTM- Whats next for Robert Guerrero? He wanted the winner of tonights fight and if JMM doesnt get Pac do you think we'll see JMM vs. The Ghost?

Dan Rafael
  (3:34 AM)

Guerrero is a mandatory so he will get a shot at a title. Maybe Marquez would fight him and if he doesn't Guerrero would get to fight for a vacant belt.

DBS (Chicago)

Why did Berto get paid that much? I'm an econ student trying to understand the econ behind it. Seems like pretty much noone knows who he is and he brings little to the table ... he got paid a comparable amount to JMM who is i) a WAY bigger name and ii) was in a WAY more competitive fight. It doesn't make sense.

Dan Rafael
  (3:36 AM)

Because HBO deems him worth it. Simple as that. They decide who they think are the "stars" when it comes to what they pay. They bid against themselves. Berto was paid about three times as much as he should have been paid for the fight. I saw good for Berto and his people for bamboozling HBO. Good gig if you could get it. It's not Berto's fault for taking the check. It's HBO's fault for enabling the lunacy for no particular reason.

George (Fontana, CA)

Jason Litzau v. Juan Diaz?

Dan Rafael
  (3:37 AM)

Damn, that's a war.

George (Fontana, CA)

Dan, you win, you TKO'd me. I have to sleep. Im scheduled for a full body massage at 9:00a.m. in the morning.

Chris Mannix (Writing an NBA story)

Can't believe you're still at it, dude

Dan Rafael
  (3:38 AM)

Iron Man.

Rick (SpringTown, Ca)

DTM- Your stamina is so good ESPN cant even keep up, it says chat wrap on the boxing page...but your still going bro.

Dan Rafael
  (3:39 AM)

LOL, I noticed that. I think it's because they leave at 3 am.

Ralph (NY)

DTM, whats your take on Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. is he on anyone's radar? He seems to be very focused and trains very hard.

Dan Rafael
  (3:40 AM)

Good young fighter. Improved a ton since he turned pro. There has been a little talk about maybe him and Molitor in a unification fight.

Tony (Tampa)

This is why the Freaks love Larry Merchant. He basically dismissed Berto's one rd. destruction of a nobody(sorry Freddy Rodriguez, KO'ing Corley is not a signature fight), said Berto hasn't proven anything to fight Pacquiao, and couldn't wrap up his post fight interview with Berto fast enough... You're a good man Larry.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

What was with HBO's graphic depicting JMM as one of three "title holders" ? How is the casual fan supposed to learn about the true championship if the media won't inform them?

Dan Rafael
  (3:41 AM)

Maybe you missed Lampley mention like 10 times that Marauez was the legitimate lightweight champion?

Mark (NYC)

I need to catch some shut-eye. You are the JMM of ESPN chats.

Dan Rafael
  (3:42 AM)

Maybe so, but I have never drank my own urine to prep for a chat.

Gerardo (AZ)

Dan, since it's 3:40am in your world and no one is really watching, can you post one of those absolutely ridiculous questions you get from morons? Just for kicks man...

Dan Rafael
  (3:42 AM)

Sorry bro.

john (Indiana)

How is the relationship between the Marquez Brothers? They don't seem to be very close.

Dan Rafael
  (3:44 AM)

From what I understand they are close. They even married sisters if I recall.

Duff (Abington, MA)

Pavlik is in the Betty Ford Center. I hope he can conquer his demons and return to the ring sometime next year.

Dan Rafael
  (3:45 AM)

Agreed.

Jay (Buffalo)

Have you read the article in the NY Post about Iran Barkley... really sad

Dan Rafael
  (3:46 AM)

I read it. Detailed about how Barkley is broke and homeless. Sad indeed.

Leo (Charlotte)

when is James Kirkland coming back?

Dan Rafael
  (3:47 AM)

Was supposed to fight Dec. 11 but that has been put off and he probably will be back in Jan or Feb.

Fred (Cali)

Dan, Sports Guy ever contact you about doing a podcast? He seems to be a real boxing fan but needs some of your freak knowledge.

Dan Rafael
  (3:48 AM)

Not yet. He's ducking me.

tom (nyc)

what did Katsidis make last night?

Dan Rafael
  (3:49 AM)

$530,000.

Duff (Abington, MA)

As always, the official anthem of RAD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLYC7ltxOrk

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Good night, sir. Gotta work in the morning. You're a hero to boxing fans. (btw that sentence took 5 mins to write due to drinking)

Gerardo (AZ)

Ha! You've been chatting so long, the freaks are referring to the fights' questions as "last night"!

Dan Rafael
  (3:51 AM)

I just realized that. Hilarious.

Jose (California)

Dan, In a recent interview Pacquiao said that as a boxing fan, he wouldn't watch a Marquez v. Pacquiao III. Whats your take?

Dan Rafael
  (3:51 AM)

When Arum tells him how much he can make he will quickly change his mind.

Mike (Chicago)

How are the Freaks doing at this late hour? Still sending in as many good questions as when the chat started?

Dan Rafael
  (3:52 AM)

Believe it or not still coming in.

Justin (Mex)

DTM Great chat! I thought at some point in the fight Marquez went toe to toe with Katsidis just to show off a bit, when he could have boxed safely in the distance, It didn't seem to me Katsidids was pushing the fight as hard as Diaz in the first fight is what i mean.

Dan Rafael
  (3:53 AM)

I think Marquez just likes to duke it out even though he doesn't have to. He hears that crowd and wants to put on a show.

Fernando (Ft Carson)

rios vs ortiz does that happen if ortiz loses to peterson

Dan Rafael
  (3:53 AM)

Unlikely unless TR and GB grow up.

tom (nyc)

any word on how the judges saw the Marquez Katsidis fight at the time of the stoppage?

Dan Rafael
  (3:55 AM)

Not sure.

Daniel (Cali)

TR and GB should sit down and discuss their future together over two nice warm glasses of urine.

Love Child (RAD)

Dad, Thank You for allowing me to stay up for this all-time chat. Can I have some cookies and milk.

Dan Rafael
  (3:55 AM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Gale Van Hoy (TX)

I had it Caballero 100-90

Dan Rafael
  (3:55 AM)

Naturally.

Gary (Indiana)

Is Khan-Maidana a BAD or WCB fight? It was nice to have Lamps back on the HBO telecast.

Dan Rafael
  (3:57 AM)

WCB. Lampley and Merchant on the call. Emanuel won't be because Wladimir Klitschko fights the same night. Not sure if someone is filling in for him or not.

Isai (OKC)

It's crazy and awesome how the super six has really separated the good from the great fighters in the division!

Dan Rafael
  (3:57 AM)

You are so right.

Power Pellets (Las Vegas)

Dan we having a Freak Slumber Party and taking this until the morning? I think you could put that chat record out of reach if you wanted to.

Dan Rafael
  (3:57 AM)

I probably could.

Steve (Hartford)

Would Marquez v Morales be @ 135?

Dan Rafael
  (3:58 AM)

I would imagine so since Marquez is the champ in that division and Morales' fight with Barrios isn't too far off at 138.

Steve (Hartford)

Any news on Chad Dawson?

Dan Rafael
  (3:59 AM)

Nothing other than he is supposed to be back in the early part of next year in a rematch with Pascal if Pascal beats Hopkins. If Pascal loses, not sure what happens.

Gino (The Bronx)

I think its best for all boxing people to quit speculating ona Floyd-Manny fight and focus on fights that are legitimately going to be made.

Dan Rafael
  (4:00 AM)

Why? It's the fight the world wants to see.

Mark (NYC)

To tom (nyc): After eight rounds, the three judges had the 37-year-old Marquez leading, 78-74, 76-75, 77-74. (Associated Press)

Dan Rafael
  (4:01 AM)

There ya go. Sounds about right. 76-75 seems too close.

brian (scottsdale, az)

floyd has to win mayweather vs clark county, then (hopefully) he can face pacquiao..

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, still can't believe someone was matching Bute up against Bob Foster during this chat...Does a prime RJJ have a chance against Foster at 175?

Dan Rafael
  (4:02 AM)

I think a prime Foster knocks Jones stiff.

Corey (Westwick)

When Liztau first started fighting on ESPN I followed him and thought he had a shot but then of corse he fell off. But with this big win maybe he can turn it around

Dan Rafael
  (4:03 AM)

This is the biggest win of his career, obviously, and he should get another notable fight out of it.

Dan Rafael
  (4:05 AM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for an epic 4-hour-plus RAD chat on a great night of fights. Get some sleep and talk to you back at our regular time on Friday. Peace.
