Chat with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to another fantasy sports chat session. One more game left on the Week 12 slate, and boy it's a doozy, with the Cardinals and 49ers meeting. Not a ton of fantasy relevant players left to go, but still, here's to hoping you get what you need to win this week. So, heavy on the football but I will answer baseball/hoops questions if you've got 'em, thanks for showing up today and here we go!

Zack (RI)

Joseph Addai any closer to playing, or should I expect some more of mediocre Donald Brown?

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

Watching the Colts' Brown Sunday night it was tough to be overly impressed... and let's not say it was because the Chargers had a big lead. That game was close for awhile. Addai just does more things, and he does them better. Addai was listed as doubtful, so at least there was some chance he would play. I think a Week 13 appearance is possible.

Zack (RI)

So Andre Johnson is finally healthy and starting to play like it at the right time, and he goes and gets into a fight! Looking at a one game suspension, right?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

Haven't heard anything definitive today about that, but yes I would expect a one-game vacation for him. He would miss Thursday's tilt in Philly, which would be a shame since Jay Cutler just lit up the Eagles for 4 TDs! Nice going, Birds. Anyway, let's not assume the worst yet. Certainly Johnson should be mighty motivated if he does play.

The "J" Man (Cali)

I'm just sick about the potential bad news on AP, and Gerhart is owned. Have you heard anything on the guy?

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Nothing yet, so let's keep our fingers crossed. The fact that Peterson was expected to return to that game originally has to be a good sign. Then again, this is a non-playoff team and Peterson is their signature player (not the 85-year-old QB) so they might be a bit more cautious. Wow, can you imagine Tarvaris handing off to Gerhart... exciting! For now, let's assume Peterson is OK, but Gerhart is a must add in most leagues in case.

Joel (Michigan )

Eric, Has Tolbert solidified the starting gig or will Mathews reclaim his job ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

I'm not the SD coach, so it's possible he continues to mess around with the brittle, unreliable and generally underachieving rookie... Tolbert should be a top 20 RB every week, if only we knew he'd get 15 carries. He's good!

dave (home)

eric,i read AP has a sprained ankle

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

I read that too! Doesn't mean he can't play this week though.

dan (buffalo, ny)

Eric, down 8 points with Crabtree and Beanie (.5 ppr) and he's done. Am I good?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

I would not be confident, no. Doesn't mean it cannot occur, but I wonder if this is a 10-7 game and nobody does a thing, except for Frank Gore of course.

Dan (LA)

I should have seen it coming, right? Portis goes on IR, Torain gets ruled out again and I'm super thin at RB, so of course Williams gets fewer carries than a Cleveland Castoff and some guy named Banks. The lesson is never trust a Shanahan running back?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

For the first few months of the season, Shanahan didn't really mess around at RB. He did what appeared to be the smart, wise moves... but Sunday, I cannot explain it. Keiland goes from 23 carries to 3.. .and it's not like another RB got the looks. Nobody did! Sure, nice strategy having Donnie Mac throw more... ugh. I think if Torain is healthy he's the guy, but who knows what Shanny wants to do. If he wasn't in the first year of his contract...

Lindsey (SC)

Please say Campbell will help Run DMC...his week 14-16 were looking like money in the bank...not so much anymore...

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

Nice passing game Sunday for the Raiders, but Gradkowski might be hurt, too. I wouldn't completely lose faith in McFadden, but I can't see trusting him as a top 10 RB in Week 13. Those are a pair of BAD weeks.

Joel (Roscommon Michigan )

Do you think that the whole VJax injury thing is a little game or will he be productive ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

I have my theories... maybe it was Vincent making the point. I don't ever accuse injured players of not being injured, but ... I don't see how a fantasy owner can trust him. Shame, since he was active in a third of leagues.

Ivan (East LA)

What to make of Jay Cutler's performance yesterday?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

Not too much. If you watched the game it didn't look like a great performance... at one point he had like seven completions but 3 of them were scores. Cutler isn't making mistakes anymore, and he should be credited for that... but I don't assume multi-TD games either. If Philly had Asante Samuel, who knows what goes down.

Mike D. (San Diego)

Looks like I outscored my opponent by 2.5 points and I still have SF D to play tonight. If it were you would you pull your D to protect the win?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

I sure would... but we seem to deal with this issue in every chat and I know some people are adamant against that. Get the win, I say. Worry about tiebreakers later.

Pete (NY)

EK - What kind of game do you expect from Vernon Davis tonight?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

A quiet one. Honestly, my expectations are not high for Cards-49ers. Hopefully it's a good game, because I will watch regardless. But relying on any WR/TE not named Fitzgerald with these QBs is dangerous.

Matt (Houston)

What do we think of Peyton Hillis? Can he sustain this past this season? I know, I know, enjoy this season for what it is, but I'm thinking long term keeper. Is he worth saving over a 3rd round Greg Jennings or an 8th round Hakeem Nicks (Hillis is a 12th rounder)?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Looks legit to me. I'd certainly contemplate Nicks there... round 8 is nothing, and he's just as good as Jennings moving forward... but Hillis shows no signs of slowing down. One would assume the Browns will have improved QB/WR play in a year, which can't hurt Hillis.. isn't he a top 10 RB keeper now?

Kevin (Buffalo)

Schefter "Vikings RB Adrian Peterson's ankle injury is not believed to be serious" via ESPN text...Fantasy owners can breathe again (and as a Bills fan, bad news for next week)

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

Well, if anyone would know, Schefter would. He's the best. And don't worry, Bills fans, it will be an exciting game and your offense will produce... just find a way to win! I feel bad for Steve Johnson. He sounded so down after the game. I have a feeling I'll have Peterson a top 3 RB in Week 13...

Tom (Madison, WI)

Not that I would ever stoop so low, but is it safe to gloat, up by 23, when my opponent has Fitz tonight?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

In my experience, whenever someone gloats something bad always happens to them. Might not be tonight, but soon. So don't do it.

Steve (Michigan)

Any thoughts on Sydney Rice, will he get better soon? Killed me this week.

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Ranked him borderline top 20 at WR, so it's tough to say he killed anyone this week. Expectations should have been in check. Still like him moving forward, especially for the Bills this week, and 3 home games.

Adam (PA)

What is the story with Zach Miller? Is he still hurt or are teams game planning for him more?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Clearly hurt, but also the Raiders are wisely developing their wide receivers and they're producing. Can't make Zach a top 10 TE anymore.

Raffi (Chicago)

Anquan Boldin's past two game has produced a measley 2 pts. Very frustrating. Hines look better from this point?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Absolutely. I blogged about disappointing Boldin last week. Hit or miss guy now.

J.B. (PA)

Eric: For the remainder of the season who do you see as a better player to have on your roster: Mike Goodson or J-Stew?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

I think it's Goodson, but I'm not the coach, so we'll see how touches are divided. But Goodson has been so good, one would think he remains a key player. I will rank Goodson better this week.

Buster_Baxtor (NJ)

Time to cut bait and run on Randy Moss or to your earlier comment even Boldin for that matter?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

Own him but don't consider using him. Moss missed my top 20 in Week 12... certainly didn't change opinions with Rusty Smith at QB! Heck, do we even need to own him anymore?

matt (seattle)

What lessons would you apply towards 2011? Personally, I think we are finding out that 1) feature rushers are absolutely invaluable and 2) WR targets are more important that physical ability (Lloyd, Stevie, TO).

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

I wouldn't say these are lessons learned exclusively this season, though. One always wants one of the few top notch RBs, at least I do. And WRs fluctuate annually based on attention they get. Terrell Owens wasn't really done last season, he just didn't get looks in Buffalo... but Steve Johnson has a QB to get him the ball.

Jacob (Michigan)

In a vacuum, would you take Gerhart or Mike Thomas the rest of the way?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

No. But that doesn't mean Thomas is a must own either. For now I think Peterson plays.

Jordan Talbott (Buchanan VA)

How do you think Vincent Jackson will do when he gets healthy and makes his return?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

I think there's something larger going on here... between him and the team. Health is barely a factor.

Joel (Roscommon Michigan )

Down the stretch......VJax or Dez ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Dez.

Pete (NY)

What's the problem in Indy??? I have both Peyton and Wayne and they look completely out of sync, even with the TD pass last week.

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

People underestimate how strong a blocker Addai is for the Colts. Peyton didn't have time to throw Sunday night... but someone does seem awry with Wayne and certainly the erratic Garcon as well. That said, I rank Peyton probably 3rd at QB the rest of the way (Rivers, Rodgers, maybe Brees). At least we know Peyton's playing in Week 17!

Robert (FL)

Eric, how do you see the Bradshaw/Jacobs tandem panning out now? 50/50 split?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

I would rather own Bradshaw, certainly. I doubt it's a 50-50 split.

Jake (LA)

EK, is Omar Infante a usable starting SS in 2011 in a deep league? Will he get 600+ PAs?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

Baseball!!! In a deep league, absolutely. I think we can count on .300 batting average. Probably starts at 3B for the Marlins, with Coghlan at second... note Infante played 19 games at SS in 2010, so if you can use him there, good for you...just make sure.

Brent (Dallas)

Seriously, can I be satisfied with Moreno holding down my RB#2 for the rest of the season in a PPR league? Been solid!

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

I'd call Moreno a relatively safe RB2 at this point. But I also see about 13 or 14 purely safe RBs, and Moreno isn't in that group.

Jack (TX)

BASEBALL! Keeper question: Posey or B.J. Upton?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Simple is right. Take the catcher with the better power stats!

Jim (San Francisco)

Eric - how do you see the Eagles-Texans game playing out fantasy wise?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Ton of points. Eagles bounce back and score at least 35... Texans rely on Foster and make it a great game. Honestly, I could see 38-34...

Jay (SD)

You are the closest thing they have to an MLB chat today. Whats the story with the T-Nish, the player the Twins bid on?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

I'm a bit skeptical a deal gets done, to be honest. Twins seem willing to spend money. Nishioka hit .346 and was first Japanese player to get 200 hits since Ichiro... haven't seen him play but supposedly he's fast, too. But let's wait until he signs before making him a top 10 middle infielder.

John (MA)

The last time you said the Eagles would score 35 points....I think they ended up scoring 59. So as a Vick and Maclin owner I am excited!!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

Eagles lost Sunday and Vick didn't have a great game, but again they scored points and Vick somehow ends up with 23 fantasy points. Amazing. And the pick wasn't solely his fault.

Mike (NY)

EK, what do you project for Vazquez on the Marlins? Can he return to his CY form from 2 yrs ago?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Absolutely. I realize I will be in the minority on this issue, but I don't care. Florida is a great place for pitchers, especially strikeout/fly ball options. I can't say a 1.10 WHIP for Vazquez, or more than 12 or 13 wins, but he will be on a bunch of my teams.

Kmac (Boston)

Good Day Eric, Your thoughts on the Seattle WR that filled in for Big Mike? Pick him up for WR3?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Obamanu caught a 85-yarder late in that game, and it made everything look awesome. No word on Mike Williams going forward, but a WR3 might be a bit premature.

LeBron James (Akron, OH)

i like your glasses

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

Better not lose on Thursday...

Do I (win???)

I need 18 from Gore tonight...

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

If our projections are close, then yes. Gore always um, gores, the Cardinals.

Mike (PA)

So is CJ even in the top 5 rb conversation anymore...that team is going down fast!

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Surprising result Sunday, that's for sure. Even if you stack the box with 8 how can Chris Johnson be that underwhelming? I'll stick with him.

Rich (Weymouth,MA)

WEEK 13 Survivor: Philly, Chicago @ Det or Sea vs Car... leaning towards Philly after narrowly moving on last week w/ Clev!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

I would concur. I wouldn't assume the Bears win in Detroit... and Seattle on the road? Puh-leeze!

Nick (Philadelphia)

Eric - do you see T.O. as a top-10 WR the rest of the season for lost Bengals?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

The fact the Bengals are awful has no bearing on Terrell Owens being productive. They've been awful all season!

Rich (Weymouth,MA)

Seattle is Home

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

That would change my mind, then.

Ryan (Germantown, MD)

Looking at the score you wouldn't believe Rivers only produced 8 points last night. What sort of chance do you think Breaston has of getting 24 points tonight? Any?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

I'd say it's unlikely Breaston even scores 8... but that's why they play the games, right?

Greg (Indy)

EK--have you ever had too many options? I drafted Rice, Jackson, Charles, and Foster. Tried to trade one or two to upgrade at TE or WR, but no dice. I followed the rankings and went with SJax over Charles this week. At this point should I just go with talent and leave Foster and Charles in the starting lineup?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Can never have too many options. Ever. People make trades for that reason, but it's foolish. So what if you have to bench a top 10 RB... better to have choices. In general I would never sit Foster at all, and I would go with Charles over SJax most weeks.

Mike (Chicago)

Andre Johnson good to go, no suspension.

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

He might be my No. 1 WR this week.. totally serious.

Jake (LA)

Bears smacked your Eagles in the mouth...most athletic defense in football.

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

I can't argue that one bit. Will be interesting to see how the Eagles move forward, and if the Bears can remain that consistent on the offensive end.

Dr. Rumack (RIP)

I just want to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you.

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

Leslie certainly made us laugh, didn't he? RIP

dave (home)

AJ is my no.1 WR eric, thank goodness no susp.

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

Frankly, it was good to see some fire outta him. And if you're gonna get ejected, don't do it in the first quarter!

Nick (Chicago)

Whats up with linemen stealing Charles' TDs? Going forward does he likely at least start getting the bulk of the carries?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

Oh come on! Charles had a great game... can't expect all the touchdowns!

Craig (Minneapolis)

Stick with Bironas or make a bid for Kaeding for the rest of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

What are these guys, utility infielders? Next!

Cathy (Tampa)

I need win to make the playoffs- play a gimpy Big Ben or pickup Sanchez?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

Gimpy? I'm almost positive that I will rank Ben a lot better than Mark.

Tony (Co)

The Bears won that game playing in a pig pen. That field was in bad shape. Poor sportsmanship on the Bears...thoughts Eric

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Didn't both teams play on that field? Speedsters like DeSean Jax have to overcome it.. .and that field didn't hurt Hester one bit. Nonfactor to me. Bears were better, impressive win.

Paul (Chicago)

ESPN needs to make a stand. Stop ranking kickers!!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

I'll sign it!

J.B. (PA)

Mock the kickers if you will, Eric, but I lost a league game yesterday because I dropped Carpenter to pick up Mare.

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

Has nothing to do with a kicker's relevance...

Jason (Atlanta)

Wrapped up a playoff berth with two weeks to go. How should I spend my time preparing?

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

I think you can still start a fantasy basketball league...

JD (Charm City)

Fill in the blank: 2011 rankings - Dwayne Bowe is a top __ WR? What a stretch for this guy!

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

I don't see how he's not top 10 for next year... incredible season for him, even more so considering his slow start.

Andrew (WI)

Adrian Peterson owner here. With $50 in FAAB left, how much do you use on Gerheart?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

I think in a day or two we're all gonna look a little silly rushing out to get Gerhart when AP plays. But it's early in the week. Hey, it's Week 13, and you've got a lot of money left... but I'd think IF Peterson is out it might take more than $50 to get Toby.

Scott (Chicago)

Antonio Gates played yesterday, but he looked like a shell of his pre-injuries self. Stick with Big Boss Man for a while since the Giants WRs are still banged up?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

Maybe it's just me, but if Gates plays, I play him over Boss.

Jeremy (NYC)

Ethics question: Secured a bye for playoffs which start next week. Use #1 waiver priority on Gerhart even if I'm not going to use him (assuming AP is back before week 14) or scoop him up anyway.

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Get him. This is not an ethical dilemma. Your job is to win the league by legal means, and signing someone who COULD play a large late-December role is wise. Don't worry about the teams fighting for spots. Do you want one of them to grab Toby and beat you in Week 16 with him?

J.B. (PA)

But don't you think Gerhart is better to own than Donald Brown at this point?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Yes, but that says more about Brown, doesn't it?

Andrew (WI)

Baseball! In a dynasty league: Rick Porcello or Jay Bruce?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Definitely Bruce. That dude hits 30 homers in 2011. Pitchers just break hearts...

Eric (Chicago)

Can we get an "expert" fantasy chat in here please? Some of these people's question are amateur than my 8 year old nephew could answer.

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Lemme see who's available right now... hold please.

Joe (Trenton MI)

Kenny Britt or Boldin for the stretch run, assuming of course Britt is healthy, I read a report he is expected back this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

You've seen what the Titans have at QB, right? Boldin's been bad, but I can't see relying on Britt the rest of the season over him, even if healthy.

Mikey (Ohio)

Better ww pickup... Gerhart or Goodson?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Goodson... look what he did Sunday despite getting fewer rushing attempts than Jon Stewart...

Lee (MN)

Who deserved to get punched more...Finnegan or Eric from Chicago? My money's in the Windy City.

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

I don't authorize or recommend violence... we're all pals here, just some are more bitter than others! OK, a few more ...whatcha got?

mike (boston)

wallace? wallace? wallace?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

You mean the DeSean Jackson of the AFC? Love Mike Wallace...probably more than DeSean now. Definite top 20 WR.

J.B. (PA)

Thanks for the time, Eric, even though our questions are amateurish. See you next week!

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Thanks... though I will be back Wednesday, same bat time, same bat channel...

Rodney (CALI)

Man EK everyone should be "Thankful" that you answer so many questions in the hour you got. I dont think anyone else even compares to you. Thanks for all the advice and help, you helped get me into the playoff fight again. Need to win one out of the last two at least. Look forward to the next chat.

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Well, good luck to Rodney in the playoffs! Good luck to all!

Scott (Charlotte)

Is Best droppable at this point? Goodson and Gerhardt are both available on the wire.

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Best has been anything but since Week 2... yeah, I would cut him for Goodson. Not Toby though.

Ben (Baton Rouge, LA)

How about some love for Matt Cassel? And he gets Denver at home this week. Top 10 in your week 13 ranks?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

I would think he has deserved that by now, yes.

Ben (Cincinnati)

Rank the rest of the way...CJ, SJax, Bradshaw

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Just like that...

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, I guess our time is up. Well, I enjoyed it. This is fantasy sports, people, let's have some fun. See you all on Wednesday for more chat fun... thanks for showing up and being passionate. Love it. Have a great day and if you need points tonight, good luck!
