Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:57 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly chat. The new notebook is posted, a feature on Nonito Donaire, who is in action on PPV Saturday night as well as several blogs and news stories from the week, so check it out and we'll discuss it all. I would also like to begin by extending my condolences to Don King, whose wife, Henrietta, died late last night at age 87.

Joe (NJ)

If Hopkins were to KO Pascal in an impressive fashion. Something I know he hasn't done in six years. How tough would it be to make your P4P list? With Marquez and S.Martinez along with a couple other names winning.

Dan Rafael
  (11:58 AM)

BHop has been on the p4p list for like a decade. If he wins he would move up most likely.

bob (Plantation FL)

Since Clottey's lack luster performace against Pac, are there any upcoming big fights for him?

Dan Rafael
  (11:58 AM)

No.

Joe (NJ)

Manny Steward brought your name up in a story he was telling on" On the Ropes" While referencing the Haye/Fraud fight. He said you were by him at the Pac/Marg fight and mentioned who just won the fight, and when he responded " I'll watch it later" you said " Don't bother" pretty funny story

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 AM)

LOL. It's true. We were chatting at ringside during the undercard before TV began and I had just watched the "fight" on the internet. He was asking me about it.

Horn (Vegas)

What was the primary reason the Silverdome was picked for Bradley/Alexander? I mean the facility and city itself does not make sense...

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Apparently the folks who run the Silverdome are putting up a lot of money (stunningly more than $500,000 from what I am told) to host the fight.

Nareg (Boston)

D$ - Amazing plan on the Pac outline - hopefully someone listens - Love the Cotto-Martinez fight!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

The plan I suggest for Pacman in my blog the other day just makes too much sense for it to happen -- Manny vs. Marquez and if Manny wins fight the winner of a Berto-Mosley fight next if there is still no Mayweather fight.

Gil (NYC)

If Pac fights Mosley and Cotto fights Martinez where would Berto go for the "big fight"?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Good question. I'm not sure. Maybe he would do his LONG overdue mandatory against Aydin, who is a worthy contender, or maybe look for someone else, like a Kermit Cintron or somebody like that.

Koichi (NYC)

Do you think it's safe to say that Manny's next opponent will most likely by SSM? It seems like Marquez is out of the running and we know Berto wouldn't generate the same amount of $$ that Shane would.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Nothing is "safe" until it's done. Been down these roads too many times to say something is going to happen when it's still up in the air. That said I think Mosley is the leader. That will disappoint me if it happens, but we'll see.

Andy (Ventura, Ca)

Dan, Do you think Saul Alvarez can knock out Lovemore Ndou?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

He's never been stopped, but Baldomir hadn't been stopped in 17 years. That's one thing to make it interesting. For those unaware, HBO Latino will televise the fight at 12:30 am Saturday night (technically Sunday morning). It is on a one-hour delay basis and is not airing live.

Jake (Chula Vista, California)

Hey Dan. nice to talk to you. My question is: Who makes the most money on a big fight such as Pacquiao vs Margarito? We pretty much know how much the two made. But, what about the promoters, cable providers and HBO? Can you give us the breakdown? Thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Pacquiao makes probably in excess of $20 mil once PPV is all counted up. Margarito made $3 million guaranteed and once the ppv is counted will probably exceed $6 million or $7 million. Then Top Rank makes a healthy profit. The Cowboys will make some money it would seem between getting back what they paid to host the fight plus concessions, parking, etc... HBO makes a distribution fee on the PPV, usually something like 7%. The cable/dish operators get something like 45% or 50% of the gross PPV revenue, so they make out like bandits.

Zim (Boston)

Condolences to the King family. The Freaks' thoughts and prayers are with Don.

Chris (Jersey Shore)

I'm salivating over the idea of Martinez-Cotto at MSG. What are the chances?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Remains to be seen. It is one possible fight.

Mike (Homer Glen, IL)

Hey Dan, thanks for the update on Andy Lee. Do you think Andy has the talent to be a top 10 MW? It seems to me he still has a bright future with his physical tools and training from Steward.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Andy definitely has the potential to be a top middleweight.

England [via mobile]

Dan how come u knock roy jones jr so much these days fair enough he's finished now but it seems like u forget how great he was in his prime.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

How exactly do I knock him other than to keep it real and speak the truth about his declining skills? It is what it is. He is no longer a viable contender. That's just the truth but in no way takes away from what he was when he was the p4p king for a decade.

SeePast (PR)

I don't know what that Chowww phrase is about, but it was fun to read your response to De La Hoya's tweets about Arum.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I don't know what it is either other than it is the way Oscar ends his tweets often. If he wants to be so sanctimonious he needs to look in the mirror. Golden Boy is not innocent here when it comes to not making certain fights or putting on weak cards, etc... Last I checked it wasn't Arum or anyone else who lured Pacquiao into a limo to give him a bag of cash to sign with him when he was under contract to another promoter. Those who live in glass houses and all that stuff. Oscar seems to be upset that Arum has the sport's cash cow in Pacquiao, who draws 40,000 or whatever for his fights and a million-plus on PPV and Marquez, who he wants to get the fight, drew a crappy crowd at MGM of less than 5,000 and made like 20 times less than Pacquiao did to fight Margarito. If Oscar had the leverage, he'd use it.

Isai (OKC)

It's funny how GBP says Arum is hurting boxing, but yet, GBP puts out these garbage Solo Boxeo and FNC cards, and then puts Mosley and Mora on PPV! Come on Oscar.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

You said it not me.

Paul Williams (La-La Land)

I just woke up..... What did I miss?

Mitch (Oakland, CA)

I am merely a lowly ourt jester freak. You, Mr. Rafael, are the King Freak, no doubt. Evidenced from Tuesday's blog. "'It's 147 because I'm sick and tired of the discussions on this weight stuff,' said Arum, who is only sick and tired of the weight discussions when it is not to his benefit." Good thing I had peed just before I read that or a court jester costume may have been soiled.

Robert (Dayton)

Could the WBC's demand that Martinez defend his title against Zbik prevent a Cotto fight from being made?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

They could but it won't happen. I fully expect Martinez to fight someone other than Zbik. I can see Martinez giving up the WBC title, taking the diamong trinket and Zbik being elevated to the WBC titlist. Martinez would respect the WBC by paying a fee for the diamond belt (which would be less than the fee for the title) and still owning the Ring title and the lineage and everyone is happy.

LeRoy (Gary, Indiana)

Uunless Manny Pacquiao beats a legitimate black American brother he?ll always be just another hype job like Gatti, Marciano, Chavez and De La Hoya.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Unless you get some education you'll always be just a dope in a weekly boxing chat like Bing.

Jake (England)

What are your picks for Donaire-Sidorenko and Soto-Antillon?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Donaire W12, Soto KO10

Steve (NYC)

What is next for Wlad after Dec.?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

The Wlad camp has talked to the Adamek camp. They also would still be interested in a Valuev fight. Obviously, they hope for David "The Ducker" Haye, if he will ever man up and fight him.

Steve (NYC)

Need to use your powers to get Latif Kayote- Swamp Donkey on FNF. It would be a shoot out!

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Interesting. I'll be interested to see Kayode on ShoBox's main event tonight, even though he is not exactly fighting a legitimate opponent.

John (NYC)

What really happened with the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Chavez got sick.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

D$, Did Bika fight well enough to get another title shot at 168?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Not in his next fight, I don't think, but he is still a solid top 10 contender.

Steve (NYC)

Has a fighter in recent years had as many tough fights back to back as Froch?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Froch is on a good run for sure. I would say Sergio Martinez and Pacquiao have also had a tough schedule as well. But Froch is certainly taking good fight after good fight and I give him credit for it.

Julio (Los Angeles, California) [via mobile]

I wouldn't pay money to see PAC MAN v. Moseley or PAC MAN v. Berto. These fights don't make any sense. PAC MAN v. Marquez will make the best fight. What will it take to make this fight happen?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

It will take the promoters making a fair deal.

Joel (Queens,NY)

Not that i disagree but I was schocked to see AA off your top 10 super middleweights

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

How could I leave him in? He is 1-2 at super middle with two massive one-sided losses and a knockout of Jermain Taylor, who was not a serious super middle contender.

Hinrich (Germany)

Hey Dan whats your take on Uchiyama vs. Solis? Great Fight in my opinion. It starts 2011 with a bang.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Two of the best guys in a weak 130 weight class.

Joe (NJ)

6-1 odds on Chisora to win. Are you surprised they are this low? Or is it pretty tough to get odds higher then 10-1

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

I'm not a big odds guy but I don't give Chisora a legitimate chance to win. Wladimir is going to brutalize him.

Boxing newbie (HK)

I got goose bumps (and a bit teary) while reading your article on Katsidis visiting Marquez after the fight. Having said that, we now all know Marquez won the fight and I was just wondering, is Katsidis just not quite good enough to make it all the way becoming a champion or we can still expect he still has a bit of room to improve and get a rematch down the track some day?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Katsidis is what he is. A good contender who has reached his ceiling I believe. I doubt there will be a rematch with Marquez, but I still would love to see Katsidis back on HBO making money in exciting fights.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

Dan, it seems like Haye/Booth are already planting seeds to kill any potential K2 fight, what with their demands the fight be in England and on their monetary terms.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

For the right deal, the Klitschkos have no problem fighting in England. Remember, before the Ducker camp blew the deal and couldn't deliver, Wlad was set to go to England to fight him. But the Ducker camp messed up the stadium deal and they moved the fight to Germany. Then the Ducker pulled out with a fake injury after he had signed the contract and Wlad destroyed Chagaev instead.

Aaron (MI)

Read a recent report that Pacquaio isn't happy with his recent financial statements... How do these guys blow all of this cash?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

You ever see the entourage Pacman has? He spends money faster than the Pentagon.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Sorry to be late. I had to take a Valuev.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

These are my readers.

Bing (Philly)

I don't know why your so hard on Haye. I mean, the guy just beat an olympic gold medalist. What more do you want from him? Name me an olympic gold medalist the Klistchko's have beat.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Wlad knocked out Olympic gold medalist Ray Mercer for one.

Devale (Chicago)

Dan in your opinion do you also think Pac vs Berto wouldnt be a good fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

In the ring, I think it would be a fine fight. I have no real issue if Pacquiao took Berto. I prefer the Marquez 3 but Berto is at least young, fast and powerful.

Joe (NJ)

Is Berto Collazo still an option? Whatever happened to that fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Not an option. Collazo says he won't make 147 anymore and he hasn't fought in forever while turning down fights. Forget about that rematch.

Jeff (Dearborn, MI)

Did you watch Mike Tyson on Larry King last night? He certainly seems to be in a better place now, I'm happy for him and hope he keeps it up.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

I saw most of it and have it on my DVR. From what I saw, you're right, Mike seems like he's in a good place right now. Hopefully, it will last.

Ryan (Michigan)

Hey Dan. I'm super excited that I will get to see my first LIVE boxing event at the Silverdome for Bradley Alexander. A Big fight and a live HBO broadcast. Any chance of me seeing the King Freak there and do you know how much tickets are.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I plan to be there, yes. Not sure of the ticket prices yet. Gary Shaw told me yesterday they were still working on the scaling and that tix will go on sale next Friday.

jx (phoenix,az) [via mobile]

Hola Dan! I was going through some old fight tapes& ran across the ledwaba fight before the lewis-rahman fight in Africa. He was really good and to the HBO crew praised him so much it got me thinking how under rated Manny's win over him was considering the short notice, etc. Your take?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Manny's win over him is very underrated. At the time, Ledwaba was considered like the best or second-best at 122 even though he wasn't the lineal champion (there wasn't one at the time). Ledwaba was a bad ass and Pacquiao destroyed him. I was high on Ledwaba and was at the fight and Manny broke his nose early and Ledwaba never seemed to know what hit him.

Justin (Seattle)

Love Child?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Mike (London)

Who would Haye fight if not the Klitshkos? Adamek? He might have the audacity to bring Holyfield to England!

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Maybe Frank Bruno or Danny Williams or a Carl Thompson rematch for the Ducker?

Juan Garcia (Los Angeles)

Dan, Always look forward to the weekly chat. Any update on the status of Mosley and Golden Boy Promotions. Is he a free agent? Is he still a partner? Thanks, Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

My understanding is that his actual boxing promotional contract has expired. However, he owns a 5% equity stake in the company. But if he fights for another promoter he would have to give that up.

Tim (Lincoln)

Great article on the Marquez-Katsidis postfight stuff. Been a huge fan of Katsidis ever since the Czar Amonsot fight, cool to see he's a good guy too. Closest thing we have to a Gatti as a terrific action fighter who will always fall a step short of elite status.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Couldn't agree more.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Is the Ponce De Leon fight going to be broadcast on HBO Latino too or is it just the Canelo fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

I asked that exact question to HBO yesterday. They told me it will only be the Canelo fight. Now if Canelo fight ended very early I suppose it's possible they could show that one too, but that is not the plan.

Julian (Cedar Falls, IA)

Hey Dan, big fan here. If the Cotto-Martinez fight happens, would Martinez dropping to 155 be too much for him? or would he still have the same speed to outbox Cotto. Good match-up of wills though

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Him dropping to 155 would be an aspect that would even up the matchup if Martinez struggles with the weight.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

Judging by how shot Mormeck looked against Ibragimov yesterday, maybe Ducker will be giving him a call.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Well the Ducker already knocked him out at cruiserweight.

Tony (London)

Is Arum aware that many people don't want to see Mosley-Pac.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Are you aware that Arum doesn't care what we think?

Shane (Portland, OR)

Hey Dan-O That was a sweet pic of ur fight credential on twitter!! U should put more pics up of ur boxing stuff!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I tweeted that photo of my Trinidad-Vargas credential (10-year anniversary was yesterday) and was suprised how many people looked at it and commented on it. Maybe I will tweet some pix of my old credentials and stuff. I have a lot of that crap around my office.

MikeRo (Chicago)

When you say SSM has to give up his 5% ownership stake do you mean sell it back to GBP or lose it completely?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

My understanding of the GB contracts is that GB would buy it back for a very reasonable price outlined in their deal.

Rags (NYC)

Internet fact or fiction: Andre Berto is a promotional free agent at the moment?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Fiction, according to Lou DiBella.

Aaron (Cincinnati)

Since HBO seems intent on showing Guerrero whenever possible....lets see Ghost vs. Katsidis.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

I like it and have mentioned it.

jx (phoenix, az) [via mobile]

Hola Dan! I'm not being sarcastic, but has any fighter ever sent you a Christmas present, and if so, what was the best one?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

I have never gotten a holiday present from a fighter. I get cards and stuff from promoters and network folks every year but can't recall anything ever from a fighter.

Steve (NYC)

Is Sam Peter done?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

With lunch?

Steve (Hartford)

Dan, do you know what's Hopkins share of GBP is?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Also 5%.

David (Houston)

Who beat the ducker?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Carl Thompson knocked him out in a cruiserweight fight. I have the tape. Maybe I'll watch it later. In that particular fight the Ducker did not duck enough and got clipped.

MikeRo (Chicago)

If Arum makes Pac-SSM a reality I authorize you on behalf of the entire Freak Nation to flip Arum the bird the next time you see him.

Julian (Cedar Falls, IA)

Thanks for answering! I've submitted a question for like 4 weeks consecutively!

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Glad to do it. I don't think the Freaks quite understand -- I get thousands of questions and cannot possibly answer them all much less even read them all.

Vincent (Spokane,WA)

Whose your favorite heading into the Bantemweight tournament? Will your be making the trip to over here to cover it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I won't be there as I will be in Vegas for the Khan-Maidana fight next week. But both fights in the semis are competitive. I honestly do not have a favorite. I can see all four guys winning it.

jose sulaiman (hell)

I will send you a Christmas present . . . for a small sanctioning fee of course

Dave (PA)

If Manny's camp is insisting that his next fight will be at 147, does that make it even tougher for Marquez to get that fight, considering how much he struggled when he moved up for Floyd?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

The thing with the weight on a Pac-Marquez fight to me is entirely a non-issue as long as they don't have a low 140s limit. In other words, even if the contract was 147 max both guys will still come in most likely well under. 147 could be the max but it would be likely that Pacman would come in at like 144 and Marquez maybe a pound or two less.

Joel (Queens,Ny)

Will Bradley-Alexander have an undercard fight? Or will it be just the main event?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

At this point, HBO is only planning the main event, which is a shame.

JP (L.A, CA.)

"Steve (NYC)Is Sam Peter done? Dan Rafael (12:44 PM)With lunch?" This is my writer.

Edju (Salisbury, MA)

Would you attend Wrestlemania if you weren't attending a fight that weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Probably not. However, I am proud to say I did attend WrestleMania I live at Madison Square Garden. I still have my program from it.

Flemming (Copenhagen, Denmark)

Holyfield - Nielsen..............it's so depressing!

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

It is also sad.

Justin (Seattle)

DTM, what is the secret to the adjectives when describing the awful WBC? Do you have a thesaurus or are they so bad you are just inspired?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

A little of both.

Juan Manuel Marquez (Restroom)

Dan, I'm sending you a holiday drink for Christmas!

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

I'll pass, thanks.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Since there aren't any great candidates for FOY, why not Litzau's upset over Caballero? Not a great fight, but 13-1 underdog. I hope he bet a lot on himself.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Becuase it's fight of the year, not upset of the year. Duh.

MikeRo (Chicago)

Danta Claus,Last night I had a terrible nightmare...I dreamt Arthur Abraham fought Joshua Clorry in a catchweight fight, and Ruiz came out of retirement to fighton the undercard against Audley Harrison.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Damn, that's bad.

Marc (Malden, MA)

The Miz was on Bill Simmons' podcast this week.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Because he's The Miz and he's awwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeesommmmmmmmmmmmmme!

Edju (Salisbury, MA)

By the way, did FIFA pay a small sanctioning fee to the WBC after they voted freakin' Qatar for the World Cup in 2022?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Maybe. But at the end of the day, I couldn't care less.

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Dan, speaking of Jermain Taylor, any news on him this week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

No, the same way there hasn't been any news for like a year. Give it a rest. If there's news I'll let ya know.

Charles D. (Inkster, Mi)

Hate to say it Danny but your Duke boys look damn good this year!

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

They look great. I've been very impressed in the early going and the win over Mich State was nice. They beat a really good and did it basically with ease. Going for the repeat!

Alex (Florida)

Hey Dan, I've heard some rumblings about Khan-Maidana being fought with 10 ounce gloves instead of 8 since they're fighting in Vegas. Can you clear this up?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

They are fighting with 8-ounce gloves, according to the Nevada commission.

Rich (Clevelend)

Is Mayorga really making another comeback? At what weight? Seems to me the only working out he has down is with the 6 oz curls and smoking a pack a day.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Yes, he fights on Dec. 17 on the Don King card. The fight is probably slightly over 160.

Dave (Cincinnati)

Speaking of Jermaine Taylor, it was 5 years ago today he beat Hopkins for the second time to cement him as the undisputed middleweight champion.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Can't believe it's been that long. Dammmmnnnnn.

John (Phoenix)

Thunder Dan, I love how you mentioned Segura as someone that had a great 2010. Is the weight going to be a problem with him getting Calderon again? Who promotes Segura?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Segura is with Top Rank and Beltran. Segura's people tell me he is fine with fighting Calderon again but that he wants it to be at flyweight because he no longer wants to (or can) make 108. The contract for the first fight had a rematch clause but did not specify the weight.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Shout out to Ricky Burns defending his title saturday night in my hometown Glasgow.

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Check out my notebook today. I have some stuff in there about the fight.

R! (Bay Area)

Will David Lemieux's fight be on ESPN3 tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

No. If he had been fighting even a halfway decent opponent ESPN3 was interested. But he is fighting a completely obscure club fighter.

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - Since you stating you just received several Matthew Saad Muhammad fights, I had to go back and watch is two brutal wars with Marvin Johnson. Sick.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

I got like 5 or 6 of his fights. I will be checking them out when I get some time to chill and watch them.

JL (San Diego, CA)

Great point by DiBella regarding Cotto's possible fight with Sergio Martinez as a "free" pass at 155 and that Margarito fight would obviously still be there later. No brainer to make it right? What chances would you give Cotto against Martinez at 155 though?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Certainly Martinez is the favorite but Cotto has never dodged a challenge unlike some other people we know whose names rhyme with Playweather and Maye.

Manny (Florida)

Who woulda thought that five years later Hopkins would still be on the P4P list and Taylor would have been knocked out enough times to make a highlight reel.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

That is why BHop is an all-time great.

Zim (Boston)

Tweeting and chatting at the same time! Wish I could multitask like that!

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Soneone has to do it. Glad you follow me. So should all the Freaks @danrafaelespn!!

Mike (Jersey City)

Who are you leaning towards in Froch/Glen Johnson?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Froch. As much as I love Glen, I think Froch's activity level is going to give Glen a lot of problems.

Adam (DuPage)

What does Caballero do now that he's blown his shot at Gamboa or Lopez? I'm asking this as a serious question- what weight will he fight at, and what kind of match-ups are realistic for him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Caballero really hurt himself with his performance vs. Litzau. If he wants to get a notable fight, he needs to go back to featherweight and work his way back. Not sure who will fight him but he'll need to be willing to fight for chump change because nobody is going to pay him and I can't see HBO or Showtime using him right away.

Vincent (Spokane,WA)

Marco Huck vs. Denis Lebedev fight of the year canidate? Youtube has made me a hugh Lebedev fan with his highlight reel Knockouts.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Very, very good matchup and I expect it to be a really good fight. I'm a Huck fan because he is always in exciting fights and Lebedev has shown a lot in terms of being an action fighter. I see no way this can be a bad fight unless someone just gets drilled early.

Isai (OKC)

If Ponce de Leon wins tomorrow, what do you think about a realistic and possible match-up between him and John... I say possible because we all know GBP wants to stay in house.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Richard Schaefer mentioned to me about wanting to match Ponce with Jhonny Gonzalez maybe.

John (Phoenix)

One thing from the MGM last weekend. Zab Judah stood outside the arena and took about 100 pictures with fans. In a day and age that athletes are given bad reps, I wanted to mention how kind he was to my fiance and I.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

No surprise. Zab enjoys being around the fans. Many fighters when they go to fights often will hang around after and take pix and sign autographs for fans. I have seen it many, many times.

Ryan (Kent, OH)

Whoever Pacquiao fights, is he and Arum's plan to keep fighting in Dallas, or will we ever see him back in Las Vegas?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Pacquiao's next fight almost certainly will be back in Las Vegas.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Check it out Freaks. Five years ago today: http://twitpic.com/3cjlbc

Drew (Atlanta, GA) [via mobile]

Any word on Freddie Roach's reality show.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Yes, Freddie does have a show coming out soon. I will be writing something about it soon.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

That was a pretty sweet pass!

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

I have kept all my credentials from the fights I have covered.

Matt (NYC)

Is Andre Ward among your runner-ups for fighter of the year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

He is certainly among the honorable mentions.

Justin (Indianapolis)

Only 3 things are guaranteed to happen in life. Death, Taxes, and and Dan Rafael Friday afternoon chats.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Let's not forget about the following: Arum ranting and raving, Oscar tweeting dopey stuff, Valuev backing up the facilities, Mayweather (I won't even go there), the Ducker, well, ducking, Bing being an idiot, HBO overpaying for certain fights, Showtime complaining about HBO counter programming it and then doing the same thing, etc. etc. etc.

Dave (Cincinnati, OH)

Do you have a hat on in that pic or an afro??

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

LOL. It's a baseball hat.

Mike (Simpsonville, SC)

Happy Hanukkah to all my Jewish Freaks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Nice. We should come up with a list of eight fights we want to see -- one for each day in the festival of lights!

JonG (Queens)

Gotta give Bika some props for last weekend. He gave ward more problems than any of these super 6 guys have yet, and Id love to see him fight one of those guys (kessler od dirrell maybe) in the near future.

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Can't disagree.

Tom (La Grange)

Dan, are Carl Moretti and Dave Moretti (the boxing judge) related?

Jason (Boston, MA)

All I want for Hanukkah is Yuri Foreman to fight again!

SeePast (PR)

Here's a random question: Have you ever gone through any frightening experiences on a plane while flying around to so many fights over the years?

Steve (CT)

When you talk about guys ducking each other can we just call it a Hayeweather?? Rolls off the tongue quite nice!

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

That is legendary. Like Brangelina!!!!!!!

Scott (Staten Island)

Alvarez-Angullo as the Day 1 opener for festival of lights

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

On the first day of Hannukkah, I'd like to see Pac-Mayweather.

mike (nyc)

Andre Ward V Lucien Bute

Reid (Cleveland)

Dan - who is the best fighter you have ever seen in person? Is it Roy Jones? Manny Pacquaio?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Hard to pick one but in no order I would say Roy, Pacman, Mayweather and Hopkins.

Duff (Boston, MA)

But there wasn't a Friday afternoon chat last last week.

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

We had the Friday chat on Wednesday because of the holiday and ESPN did not hold any chats on Friday. And then there was an RAD chat that went for four hours on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Flemming (Copenhagen, Denmark)

DTM and his BlackBerry sitting in tree.......T-W-I-T-T-I-N-G!

Ignacio Ortiz (Oxnard CA)

If Mike Jones and Kell Brook win their upcoming fights are they fighting each other next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

That is something that has been discussed. I can see it happening in the middle of next year.

Tom (La Grange)

You posted it, but you didn't answer my question about Carl/Dave Moretti

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Thought I did. They are not related.

SeePast (PR)

Damn! I'm a bit scared of flying on planes. I kinda enjoy the thrill of it once I'm on one, but it still gets me a bit nervous. Talking about that, I'll be going to Vegas in like 15 days. I'm going to propose to my girlfriend! So imagine the nerves! The only thing to compare it is to when Haye gets presented with a Klitschko contract, except I won't be ducking.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Good luck.

kyon (boston)

I was in Newark and saw Adrien Broner fight, do u think he has the potential to be a top lightweight... if not he could be on soul train with all his dance moves

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Broner has a lot of talent. I saw the fight in Newark and have seen many of his fights. He still has some amateur in him, but he is coming along.

Ricardo (Houston)

Wow, Molitor having to face Ndlovu for a third time. A textbook example of what makes the sanctioning bodies so heinous.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

I agree. An utterly pointless waste of time to make Molitor fight him for a third time.

Al (Ocean, NJ)

Riddick Bowe Hayeweathered Lennox Lewis for years.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

So now it's a verb?

Vincent (Spokane,WA)

You've answered two of my questions, i feel like a school girl who just saw the backstreet boys live. My fellow classmates think im nuts for having this huge grin on my face.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Seek help. Your face might explode with a third comment posted.

Gil (NYC)

Is the plan for Alvarez to make his claim at 147 or 154?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Alvarez told me after the fight with Baldomir that he wanted to fight at 147 for the time being. He went up for that fight because Baldy wasn't going to make 147.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, Good tip on the Rouge bar at the MGM, great place to meet some boxing folks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

During fight week, that place always has boxing people there every night.

JP (L.A, CA.)

For someone who was reluctant on setting up a Twitter account, you really seem to embrace it. I'll admit, I'm an addict.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Me too.

dave (dallas)

when do we find out if mayweather is going to jail?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

After the trial and/or plea deal.

Ignacio Ortiz (Oxnard CA)

Is the winner of Soto vs Antillon fighting Brandon Rios next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

That is the plan. You really need to be a good Freak and read today's notebook before you enter the chat. You've been warned.

butch (from the cape)

We know how you voted but gut reaction who gets in the IBHOF this year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

We'll know in a few days when results are announecd. Obviously, Tyson and Chavez will get in and I also think Tszyu will get in.

Joel (Queens,NY)

Since you consider Hopkins a ATG do you think he can compete with Hagler,Hearns, and Leonard?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Definitely.

Sammy L. (Jakartas)

Dans, What will be next for the great grand champion Sergio Maravilla Martinez? I think he is the best thing since cut toast.

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Could be Cottos or Andys Lee or any numbers of good opponent for the great grand campeon Sergio Maravila Martinez.

Igor (Dallas)

Dan what did you talked about with Wlad like 5 days ago?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

We spoke about a number of topics. I will write something off that interview for next week in advance of his fight, which is why I interviewed him. And we have the fight on ESPN3.com and on tape delay on ESPN.

jt$ (DC)

How often is the fight schedule updated?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Pretty much daily.

Jose (Nevada)

Over/Under 3,000 for the Khan vs. Maidana fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Over.

Big M (Atlanta, GA)

Dan, I thought it was cool that Froch hit 4 different countries in his last fight too! Cool.

Mike (Jersey City)

All old man jokes aside, you think a hopkins/glen johnson match has potential for a good fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

I would think so, although BHop dominated the first fight and stopped Glen. That win looks really good now. Glen was an undefeated top contender at middleweight at the time. That fight was actually on CBS.

john (mo town)

Watched your dvd pick of the week, vargas vs trinidad. great fight, Vargas looked so young, fought so hard and then got brutalized. Have you ever seen a fighter so young take a fight that really ruined his career. That fight just took it from him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

That's exactly what happened. Vargas was never the same.

Duff (Boston, MA)

"cut toast". That is the greatest thing I've read all day. Screw sliced bread, give me cut toast.

MikeRo (Chicago)

A lot of misinformation on the web. Can you settle where the next 2 super six bouts are going to be fought. Vegas? Oakland? UK? Germany?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

The sites for the semifinals have not been determined but they will be in the United States, according to Showtime.

Justin (Providence)

What do you think of Robert Helenius? Is he getting close to a Klitschko fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

I saw him drill Atila Levin, but was not all that impressed.

maniroc (Cicero, IL )

Think you could talk to a few people and get Pacquiao to host SNL next time he fight. That would be classic!

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

That would be epic.

Keith (Norfolk, VA)

Dan, We all give Floyd a lot of crap for not fighting the best guys out there. If Pacquaio accepts a fight against Mosley over the other options, shouldnt he take a hit as well?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Maybe so, but Pacquiao has fought a rigorous schedule in several recent fights. Everyone is allowed a "breahter" once in awhile, although it's hard to say Mosley is a breather.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Sergio Martinez, HOFer yet? Or does he need to do a little more?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Please, let's not get carried away. Please please please RELAX.

mike (ohio)

Dan, do you think the Solis-Austin card gets any tv coverage?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

At this point there is none.

Erik (atlanta, ga)

We need to flood the emails at SNL Manny could be the singing act too!

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

I'm not sure what else people expect Pac to do for his next fight. His options are few and he's gonna take fight that earns him the most money and can be made easily. After that, I would like to see him fight the Bradley-Alexander winner or Marquez if that isn't his next one.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Agreed. I prefer Marquez or even Berto but it's not Shane is not a legitimate fighter, even if he is not what he once was.

Ricky (Boston)

Dan, explain why Haye should accept 50-50 with the Klitschkos, when he holds a world title and generates considerably more tv money than either Klitschko? Would you say the same about if Pacquiao fought Berto? Think not...

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

He should actually get less than 50 percent. The Klitschkos are being nice by offering him 50 percent.

maniroc (Cicero, IL )

Do you think the Super Six could come to a close at MSG?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

I think that is entirely possible.

Nick (Burlington)

DTM, great DVD pick, cant believe Vargas survived the first round and all the low blows. Left hooks always seemed to do him in. Tito, Oscar, Mosley

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I was shocked he made it through round 1. We are all stunned at ringside. Could not believe he was almost knocked out in like the first 30 seconds of the fight.

Gez (UK)

Is Froch HoF worthy yet?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Seriously? SERIOUSLY?

Keith H (Seattle)

Ricky in Boston just won today's Bing Award.

maniroc (Cicero, IL )

Imagine Pacquiao doing the "more cowbell" skit...

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

WE NEED MORE COWBELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Daniel (Wilmington,Ca)

King Danmus(The Dantic Warrior),Is Hbo planning on showing more fights on Hbo Latino or is this a one time deal they got going? I sure hope they continue to show more fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

At this point, it's a one-shot deal.

John (New Jersey )

What do you think about a potential Korobov Pirog match up?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I think Korobov is a good prospect but has not looked good lately and has done absolutely nothing to deserve a fight for a belt or even to be ranked. No chance that fight happens any time soon. None.

Tom (Washington State)

Dan, I know you've said Sergio Martinez is the fighter of the year, but would you agree that Segura has a case?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

No I do not think he has a real case. He's a legit honorable but by no means has he done nearly enough to be THE fighter of the year. He has an excellent win against Calderon and the other fights were not against quality opponents.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Gotta agree, Ricky in Boston is just plain stupid. Lets see...Both brothers are world champs, both generate huge crowds and revenue in Germany, so sure, they should take less than 50%. Ricky, go to school and get your learn on.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Is Guzman on the telecast next week? I need something on my DVR to help me sleep.

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

No, G***** is on the off tv undercard of Khan-Maidana.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

Ducker's "world title" was rightfully Chagaev's, and was not won in the ring, but given to Valuev illegitmately. As Wlad beat Chagaev, Ducker's belt really belongs to Wlad.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Let's not forget that Valuev should have gotten the L against Holyfield as well.

J (J-town)

Dan, I was in a sporting goods store yesterday, and I touched a pair of boxing gloves. Am I HoF worthy?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Joe (Circle City)

I'd really like to get the official logic of HBO for not putting the Alvarez fight on normal regualar HBO also. A primary reason I have HBO / Showtime is for boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

The fight was made on somewhat short notice and HBO Latino decided to pick it up. HBO basically did this as a way to get Alvarez shown to a largely Latino audience. HBO, the main, network has other things scheduled.

Vincent (Spokane,WA)

Bigger blowout, Froch over Abraham or Heat over the Cavs?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

That's a tough call.

Edju (Salisbury, MA)

Why did HBO change their boxing intro music? It's like saying "Hmm, this is perfect, how can we screw it up?"

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

I agree. It absolutely sucks now. It's terrible. They killed it. They need to change it back.

Rich (Chico, CA)

Better resume: Froch or Calzaghe?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Calzaghe. So far.

Koichi (NYC)

Nice seeing that the Yankees reached a deal with Mo already, let's hope it goes smoothly with Jeter soon so that we can focus on getting Cliff Lee.

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Well said my Freak brother.

Cody (Minneapolis)

does anyone have access to HBO Latino. I'm pretty sure that it isn't part of my HBO package on Directv. If it is, someone please post the channel #

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

I get it on my cable.

Chris (Medical School)

Dan, I could be wrong, but wasn't 50-50 what Haye "ASKED FOR" in the negotiations, then he got it, then he turned it down. I'm kind of surprised you didn't send Ricky to banishment for that

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Exactly. He asked for 50-50, the Klitschkos said OK and then he tried to change it to he gets UK, they get Germany and the rest of 50-50. But that is not how 50-50 works. 50-50 means 50-50.

Rico (Tijuana)

Are the big names ducking Matt Remillard?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Are you ducking your meds?

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

I love the fact that Canelo just fought a tough fighter in Baldomir and 2-1/2 months later he is back in the ring against another solid opponent, on short notice. There are a lont of fighters who could take some pointers from Saul.

jt$ (DC)

Agree completely on the WCB music, instead of getting me jacked up, it mellows me out completely, it's awful! Change it back!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

It really is putrid now.

Cody (Minneapolis)

When is Showtime going to fire their lighting guy. It is awful. They need to hire someone from HBO or UFC's lighting department. Showtime's lighting is actually different at their Strikeforce MMA show. They should give that guy the boxing lighting guy's job.

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

When I watch Showtime boxing it's like being in a cave.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Dishnetwork channel 306 is HBO Latino.

Joe (NJ)

Rico (Tijuana)Are the big names ducking Matt Remillard?Dan RafaelAre you ducking your meds?Milk just shot out my nose

killer (queens)

How stoked are you for Dimitrenko - Sosnowski. I can't wait!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Dude you really have no life do you?

Jeremy (Nashville)

HBO Latino Ch 511 on DirecTV

Paul (Carlsbad, CA)

Dan with all the movie "Airplane" love we have on this chat it was sad to hear about Leslie Nielson passing this week.

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Surely, we are all sad.

killer (queens)

It's true I have no life, but that doesn't make me a bad person.

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

I didn't say you were a bad person. But now I wanna give you a hug fella.

Paul (Carlsbad, CA)

HBO Latino is no longer 511 on directv

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

And don't call me Shirley.

Paul (Carlsbad, CA)

I am sad and don't call me shirley

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

Exactly.

dan (dc)

Final ppv numbers for pacquiao vs margarito is it up from initial 1.15 mil buys

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

It takes longer than another week for final numbers. It could be months.

Tony (Tampa)

Dan, Jeff Lacy was on a local sports talk radio show on still has delusions of grandeur of having big money fights. Also seemed very bitter towards the sports, especially the promoters. Kinda sad to hear a formerly good fighter, who is a good guy, so embittered now that he is in the twilight of his career but doesn't even know it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

Like many fighters, Jeff's grasp of reality is not all there.

Sam (NO)

I wish Holyfield would have won against Valuev, then he could have retired.

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

He wouldn't have. Holyfield says he wants to be UNDISPUTED champ before he retires.

Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY)

Dan the Man, Greetings from Upstate NY! what are your thoughts on Odlanier Solis, does he have a legitimate shot again either of the Klitschko's because of his extensive amateur background?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

He has great amateur background but I think he's a bit too short for the Klitschkos.

Brickhouse (NYC)

Wait - the Silverdome owners are paying a 500K site fee for Bradley-Alexander? That's more than they bought the whole stadium for a year ago!

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Not quite, but close.

Seth (Wisc.)

You are a joke for saying Martinez is the fighter of the year. Clearly it should be Pacquiao. Your opinions are a joke.

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

Pacquiao is probably the runner up. I'll take wins over Pavlik and and a massive knockout of Williams (No. 3 p4p at the time) over wins over Clottey and Margarito. You are entitled to your opinion. Make your own list.

Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)

Danaconda, Happy Friday! So I just opened my own law office and guess what? My office is right across the street from the Golden Boy building. I saw Richard Schaefer at Starbucks!

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

CAN I TOUCH YOU!!!!!!!!?????????

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Seth, you are an idiot. Go back in your cave an cuddle with your Brett Favre bobblehead.

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

WHEN FREAKS ATTACK!!! The Freaks are all over Seth!!!

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

Even loyal freaks aren't safe!

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Nobody is safe in the weekly Freak Chat.

JonG (Queens)

if you think dans opinions are a joke then why are u in his incredibly long chat right now mr seth

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

I was wondering the same thing.

Qatar World Cup Deligation (Qatar)

Jose Sulaiman was right. For a little fee you can get anything accomplished.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

Seth also believes David Haye deserves 60-40 in a Klitschko fight...

Eric (Omaha)

You are a joke for saying Martinez is the fighter of the year. Clearly it should be Mayweather. He beat Mosely, his girlfriend, a security guard, and ran some guy off the road. Quit being so biased

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

PAY THE MAN, SHIRLEY!!!!

Richard (Delano,C.A.)

Dan, are you an idiot?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

No, but I know this guy with no life named Seth.

John (Phoenix)

Let me start this by saying, I am a huge Mayweather fan. But it is DRIVING ME NUTS around the internet how people are talking about Manny taking easy fights. Hatton, Cotto, Clottey, and Margarito were all VERY credible opponents. Just because he made such easy work of them says more about Manny's greatness that the ineptness of his opponents.

Vincent (Spokane, Wa)

Seth probably thinks harrison/haye was worth the price of admission.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

ERic from Omaha is the winner. He should leave on a high note like Costanza.

Steve (El Paso, Tx.)

Dan, is there still a rematch clause between Alexander and Bradley? I believe it was your article stating Bradley would get a rematch for more $ regardless the outcome?

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

The rematch is now at HBO's option.

Seth's Dad (Seth's house, Wisc.)

Dan, you are a joke for not agreeing with the WBA's recognition of David Haye as fighter of the year!!!!!

Justin (Sactown, CA)

DTM, loved the story about Katsides going to the Marquez party to offer his congratulations

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

I love hearing stories like that. Reminds you that the fighters are human.

Koichi (NYC)

Seth vs Bing would be more epic that Pac vs Mayweather imo....

Joel (Queens,NY)

Seth voted Hopkins-Jones jr II as fight of the year

Hayemaker (London)

Herbie Hide next. Then maybe I can squeeze in a Klitschko.

Jason (Boston, MA)

Anything good on the horizon for Demetrius Andrade? As a native Rhode Islander I'd love to see him break out in 2011.

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

Right now, he's scheduled to be on the ESPN2 season opener Jan. 7. Remember to tell him he's the best.

AL (WI)

Dan, can we all chip in and buy Holyfield a title belt from Suliaman so he can retire already?

Brendan (Cherry Hill,NJ)

hey Dan any word on Lucian Bute's next opponent or date coming up?

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

Supposed to be on Showtime in March, but no set opponent yet.

Justin (Sactown, CA)

DTM, I had heard Fernando Vargas is in financial trouble but his rumored comeback attempt to me is just sad. Do you know if he is even training right now?

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

Supposedly, Vargas got taken by a former business adviser and does not have the kind of money he should have.

Joe (NY)

David Haye was knocked out at Cruiserweight, was dropped by Mormeck, was rocked by Barrett... if I were him I wouldn't want to fight a Klitschko either. Milk that belt for all its worth. It would be a fair enough strategy for him to take... except he trash talks about the Klitschko's. You can't have it both ways; if you want to avoid them you can't bad mouth them too.

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

Finally, sanity from a Freak.

Chris (Medical School)

Dan, wouldn't Mosley's 5% stake in GBP be worth way more in the long run than 1 fight now with Pacman. Is Mosley in need of quick cash financial problems right now?

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

You would think so but some people don't look at the future like that.

Nate (Hagerman, ID)

What's Ward's problem with fighting somewhere other than Oakland?

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

Andre has no issue with it. When Dirrell dropped out where else should they have gone with a Bika fight on short notice? Cameroon?

Joe (NY)

Would you be interested in Hasegawa vs. Chris John? Given that they both fight primarily in Asia, is that a realistic fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

That would be a good fight actually, but I am doubtful it would happen.

Rob (Bellmore, NY)

Again - these people with Wards fights in Oakland - like the results against his past 3 opponents wouldve been any different in another city - Please.

Steve (Hartford)

Any idea wHo Jm lopez will fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

He's supposed to fight in Puerto Rico around March/April but I am not sure who he will fight. There had been a chance for Caballero, but he blew it.

Keiran (SYR)

Bika vs Miranda. Just for fun, who do you like in that fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

WC. Bika has a great chin. Miranda does not. Hmmmm.

David (Houston)

Does Roy Jones have money troubles also? Is that why he keeps fighting? Not like he is making any money lol. But if so what happend with his money?

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

Roy has financial problems, yes.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Pernell Whitaker fought a lot in Virginia, against Haugen, Ramirez, McGirt, Cardona, Mayweather, etc. Why hate on Ward? Many HOF fighters fought in their hometowns.

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

You fish where the fish are.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, what's the next step for Paul Williams? He just got destroyed by Marivilla. Does he take an easier fight to get some confidence back?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

Not sure what he will do. His promoter, Dan Goossen, says he will be back and they want to be at welterweight. I would think Williams won't fight for several months. I would think he'd come back around the spring.

JonG (Queens)

im not sure who it was that used "hayweather" as a new verb to essentially replace "duck" but thatnk you whoever it was i am going to spread this as best as I can

OWN (OKC)

Does Calzaghe rank in your top ten pound for pound of all time?

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

Are you feeling OK?

Julio (Panama)

DTM.....What about aa matchup with Rig-yawn-deaux and the other panamenian at 122 Ancelmo Moreno. Im sure Ancelmo would make things intersting

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

That would be sleep-inducing.

bk don (brooklyn)

Does barrios have any chance against morales?

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

I think he defintely does. Pretty even matchup.

Zim (Boston)

Must have been a tough week for the freaks based on some of the posts today. I can only imagine the stuff you're filtering.

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

It's brutal. The stupidity of some of these people is simply shocking. And, by the way, here's something to keep in mind: If you're going to curse, spew vulgarities, make physical threats, spew racial insults, homophobic language and religious insults, well, ummmm, you're not getting posted. Some of you all need to go call your mom or take a pill.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

I drank an entire 7-11 Double Gulp. I need to go take a Marquez.

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

Was your soda in one of the KISS cups?

@stonemclean (Canada)

How about Williams-Collazo at a little over 147?

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

For what reason? Collazo hasn't fought in ages and done nothing for years other than legitimately lose a tight fight with Berto.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan any USA television for Morales-Barrios yet?

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

No. There won't be.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, to your knowledge, does HBO have any interest in David Lemieux, especially in pitting him against Dmitry Pirog?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

I know HBO has its eye on Lemieux, although not for a specific fight at this point.

Joel (Queens,NY)

Has Dibella talked to you about his new prospect Javier Fortuna of the Dominican Republic? I read some quotes and Dibella seems to be REAL high on him.

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

He called me after his huge knockout the other night practically aroused by it. He was raving about Fortuna.

ope saaga (hawaii)

Did you actually watch the Duke-Michigan State game? I don't know what ease you were talking about because State gave them all they could handle. The probably lose on a neutral court.

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

Yes, I watched it. It was tough but at no point did I feel Duke was not in control or would lose.

js (burbank, ca)

how serious is nate campbell about his retirement? i hope he means it.

Dan Rafael
  (3:08 PM)

He sure seems to mean it at this point. The question is will he still mean it 10 months from now.

Kevin (Boston)

Hey Dan. Watched the Hasegawa vs Burgos fight, great fight. I was curious to see how Hasegawa took shots after a broken jaw especially since he was going up 2 weight classes. He took a lot of flush punches from a legit featherweight. That said, any truth to him fighting Jhonny Gonzalaz?

Dan Rafael
  (3:08 PM)

It was a helluva fight. Gonzalez is the mandatory so yes, I think the fight happens in Japan.

Vincent (Spokane,Wa)

Michagan State was Juan Diaz, while Duke was Marquez taking over when it counted. A rematch would have the same result.

Mike (Macomb, MI)

Dantastic, Settle a bet. ....Is there a rule in boxing that says you can't fight for 90 days after losing by knockout in you last fight? ? ?

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

Depends on the severity of the knockout and in which state you fight.

george (Chicago)

And why wouldn't Haye getting UK ppv n klitschos getting German ppv then 50-50 for the rest b fair?

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

Because whatever the British PPV does the Klitschko he is fighting will be responsible for a lot of that money. It will generate gazillions more than Ducker fighting a Fraudley Harrison type fight and the reason will be because he's fighting a Klitschko. And for that reason Klitschko deserves a significant part of that revenue.

JP (L.A, CA.)

Dan, picture this.. It's mid Nov 2011 and you're sitting ringside at Yankee Stadium. Sitting to your left is Donnie Baseball and to your right are all the members of KISS. We're going to the 12th and decisive round on what has been an unbelievable, back and forth brawl between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr...

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

I'm about to pass out in joy.

John (Grand Rapids)

As a die hard MSU fan and hardest of hardcore Duke haters, I still agree with you Dan. Duke was in semi-control the entire way.

Ryan (PVD)

Dan! It's my birthday, I took the day off from work, chatting w/ the freaks, before a night out on the town! Freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

No, but happy birthday.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, what was Zsolt Erdei doing fighting a 8 rounder on the undercard of Martinez vs. Williams 2 here in the States at the ripe old age of 36 against an opponent no one had heard of? Was that the beginning of his "American Invasion"?

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

The dude had not fought in a year, he was shaking off the rust in his first fight with a new promoter and he was returning to 175, where he hadn't fought in ages. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Rob (Bellmore, NY)

Even if Berto was to be a free agent, how could he even consider leaving Dibella after all those million dollar purses he got him for fighting B and C level competition

Dan Rafael
  (3:18 PM)

Andre Berto should get down on the floor and French kiss the shoes of Al Haymon and Lou DiBella.

Jeff (Greensboro)

The best of boxing in 2010:1) Sergio Martinez 2) Dallas Stadium 3) any fight with Manny or the Klitschkos 4) the burgeoning Montreal and German boxing scenes 5) ESPN3 and Dan Rafael?s regular chats, blogs, tweets, etc.The worst of boxing in 20101) Mayweather?s legal troubles 2) the sparse summer boxing schedule 3) Ducker David Haye?s opponents 4)terrible undercards 5)any headline that contains the words: Jose Sulaiman

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

Not a bad list. But I will make one tweak. I would love a headline that said Jose Sulaiman resigned for real.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, AFter reading your note about recieving those Saad Muhammed dvds I have to recommend the Saad-Muhammed vs Yaqui Lopezs fight to watch. A brawl and a testament to Muhammed's incredible ability to take a punch. Every freak will enjoy that fight.

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

I've seen them, but my copies were not good. The DVDs I received have both fights in a beautiful condition.

Travis (NJ)

Can we add the "Prudential Center in Newark, NJ" to the list of boxing's best in 2010? Nice place for a fight right Dan?

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Dan-- were you surprised that the HBO guys commented on JMM and his hydration habits?

Dan Rafael
  (3:21 PM)

Not at all. It's an interesting fact about him for sure.

@stonemclean (Canada)

Gorilla Productions Trinidad - Vargas HL package. No one does it better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XO0Vtii0zRs

Dan Rafael
  (3:22 PM)

Sweet.

Greg (NJ)

The MSG Network in NYC keeps showing classic Butterbean fights. And I watch regularly. Freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (3:25 PM)

Sorry to hear that, but no.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Do boxing commissions generally license corpses (or maybe zombies), because I heard Holyfield is going to fight until he regains the title.

Rags (NYC)

Gimme me Guerrero v. Katsidis on HBO! True crossroads fight!

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

Had already thought of that. Like that fight.

Jesus (L.A.)

Hey Dan, just read your quick hits, nice to hear a fighter like Burgos give another fighter his due. Do you think we're going to get to see Hasegawa here on TV any time soon? (also thanks for the recommendation on the fight Burgos Hasegawa)

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 PM)

I doubt we'll see Hasegawa on television here but I think Burgos would be a legitimate opponent for JM Lopez or Gamboa in their next fights as long as they aren't fighting each other for the time being.

Mark (NYC)

In your eyes, what is 2010's Chat of the Year? The Barbecue Chat? The Dallas Marathon? Last night's RAD? They are all worthy candidates.

Dan Rafael
  (3:28 PM)

LOL. Never thought about rating the chats. I'll let the Freaks do that but we've had some pretty sick ones.

Bruce (Alexandria, VA)

"classic Butterbean fights" is an oxymoron.

Chris (Bay Area)

Just watched Trinidad - Vargas Highlight. That was Amazing! Got me so pumped and made me realize why I love boxing so much. Great Fight

Steve (CT)

The BBQ chat was #1 BY FAR....ive reread that transcript at least 10 times...

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

That is kinda scary.

Brandon (Houston)

Do you really think AA will get knocked out by Ward? Ward is going to be right in front of him. I think AA matches up better than Ward than he did against Dirrell and Froch.

Dan Rafael
  (3:32 PM)

I've never said he would be knocked out by Ward. But I do think if the fight happens, Ward soundly beats him.

killer (queens)

Does the stuff you filter every week make you lose your faith in humanity, or at least in boxing fans?

Dan Rafael
  (3:33 PM)

Yes it does.

Brandon (Houston)

What do you think of Matt Hatton- Malignaggi?

Dan Rafael
  (3:34 PM)

You trying to make me ill? ZERO interest.

killer (queens)

Steve rereads the BBQ chat 10 times ... and I thought *I* had no life!

Berndawg (CHI)

Silverdome meet the Sears Centre/Hoffman Estates, IL circa October 2007!!

Dan Rafael
  (3:34 PM)

Exactly what I thought of and I even used that as an example when discussing the fight with someone the other day.

Marc (Potter, Wi)

Sergio has two big wins this year, but Wladimir has been kicking the crap out of contenders for years. Why not rate him higher pound for poun over Sergio?

Dan Rafael
  (3:35 PM)

Because his competition has not been as good as Martinez's.

Derek (Brooklyn)

Are you going to write something about next week's Adameck fight? What do you think of the main event and overall card?

Dan Rafael
  (3:39 PM)

It's a nothing fight. I actually probably won't write anything since I am going to Khan-Maidana and there is also Wladimir defending the heavyweight championship and the bantamweight tourney. Adamek doesn't rate since he's fighting a guy he's supposed to easily defeat.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan, really disappointed about Chavez bowing out tomorrow night. I'm hoping that Donaire and Soto can make up for it. I'll still be at the fight tomorrow though!

Dan Rafael
  (3:40 PM)

I suspect the other fights will be solid fights but it's hard to endorse paying $45 for the ppv.

Power Pellets (Las Vegas)

Dumbest thing I read was in your story how your mentioned the Silverdome was going to be the site of the Bradley-Alexander fight and they want to scale it for 15,000 people. That's like scaling the Bat Cave to fit a station wagon. Why don't they just leave it as is and have a ton of cheap tickets with 5 dollar or free parking? Maybe give the city something to talk about.

Dan Rafael
  (3:41 PM)

I have no idea.

Bill (Atlanta)

Dan, it appears that tonight's ShoBox card is NOT currently on the boxing schedule.

Dan Rafael
  (3:44 PM)

The card is on. It seems to have been deleted from the fight sked for reasons that I am unaware of. The show is on.

Larry (Ypsilanti, MI)

I may be able to help you with the question about the Silverdome, Dan. The arena is still in the process of being retrofitted, and most of the upper floors are pretty much untenable, including leaky toilets.

Dan Rafael
  (3:45 PM)

Sounds like a great place to cover a fight in the middle of winter.

Chris (PA)

What's up next for Zab Judah? Is he waiting for all the other 140lb fights to shake out?

Dan Rafael
  (3:45 PM)

He's mandatory for the vacant IBF belt and is supposed to fight Mabuza.

Eric (Omaha)

Do you think we'll get to see the winner of Bradley/Alexander fight the Khan/Maidana winner to give us a true 140 lb champ?

Dan Rafael
  (3:46 PM)

I have serious doubts that the winners will fight each other in their next fight.

Aaron (Hartford)

Dan...I went to Wrestlemania III ...it was a dump back then.... what a dumb place for fight ...

Dan Rafael
  (3:48 PM)

Kinda like Hartford?

Al (Las Cruces, NM)

Dan, who do you like between Soto and Antillon? I think it should be a pretty good fight myself.

Dan Rafael
  (3:49 PM)

I agree, pretty solid fight. I like Soto. I am hoping it's a good action fight.

Rags (NYC)

How about Judah-Berto if nothing else?

Dan Rafael
  (3:50 PM)

Would be fine but Judah has said he is fighting now at 140 and just moved down.

Quinton (Columbus, OH)

when will the ticket info/prices be released for Bradley vs Alexander?

Dan Rafael
  (3:52 PM)

I would think with the tix on sale next Friday sometime in the next few days.

lenox lewis (england)

i absolutely love the marathon chats-

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

DTM, you said in the notebook today that Andy Lee has been getting great sparring with Wlad, those 2 are really sparring against eachother? or was that a misprint? Do guys regularly spar with people who are that much bigger/smaller than eachother?

Dan Rafael
  (3:53 PM)

They really have sparred together. When I saw Andy at Martinez-Williams we chatted about it. Wladimir uses him for the speed, but obviously doesn't go all out against him. Lee said he's learned a lot from Wladimir.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

HAHAHA!!! My favorite part of the chats, when Hartford gets dumped on!!!! It never gets old!!!

Dan Rafael
  (3:55 PM)

Pittsburgh ain't much better.

Brian (Toronto)

Does the Silverdome strike you as an odd venue for the Alexander/Bradley fight ?

Dan Rafael
  (3:56 PM)

Very.

@stonemclean (Canada)

Zab Judah is tweeting at you about a fight between him and Khan. Any chance of that or it is 100% Khan-Ortiz provided they both win. GB is just as bad as TR for keeping it all in the family.

Dan Rafael
  (3:59 PM)

Khan-Judah would be an interesting fight to me. I dont think there is any guarantee that Khan-Ortiz is next. If Khan wins though one thing is pretty clear -- his next fight will be in the UK unless they somehow find a way to match him with the Alexander-Bradley winner.

Jack (Newport Beach)

In your vast DVD collection, do you have any footage of the Klitschkos sparring each other? I'd pay for that!

Dan Rafael
  (3:59 PM)

I do not. But I would love it.

Rob (New York)

Bradley/Alexander is off to a horrible start in my opinion. Pick a venue very late, crappy venue in the wrong market. HBO only planning to show the main event.

Dan Rafael
  (4:00 PM)

I can't disagree. Pretty much everything that could be done wrong is being done wrong at this point.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, as a Yankee fan, would you rather have Cliff Lee for something like 4 years, or Zack Greinke for something like 10 years?

Dan Rafael
  (4:03 PM)

Lee. Greinke does not have the mental strength to deal with New York. Lee does.

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

I think it's more realistic for Ortiz to get Maidana in a rematch next regardless of Khan vs. Maidana outcome.

Dan Rafael
  (4:03 PM)

I could see that. There is some unfinished business there.

David (Houston)

Could you imagine your life now without twitter? Couldnt go back could ya?

Dan Rafael
  (4:05 PM)

I'd be a little less insane.

jose sulaiman (WBC underworld)

"My goal is to be the undisputed world champion one more time before I let it go. Once I do that, I sit down..." Holyfield should have his boxing license removed.....For a small sanctioning fee of course.

Raleigh NC [via mobile]

Why doesn't Floyd mayweather fight manny pacquiao?

Dan Rafael
  (4:06 PM)

Hilarious question.

tosh (Los Angeles, CA)

I'm a little concerned that Showtime has been calling Lucian Bute a "Showtime fighter". I know he fits in with the network's planning for the winner of the Super Six but isn't signing fighters to multi-fight deals something we have been killing HBO about?

Dan Rafael
  (4:07 PM)

Signing fighters is fine as long they fight real fights. The problem with many of the HBO contracts in the past was that they'd sign a guy and get a bunch of crap. As long opponents are outlined in a deal and the guys fights tough for the big money, no problem with the networks signing guys.

josh,birmingham al [via mobile]

does hopkins have a chance? it seems like he always wins, when everyone counts him out.

Dan Rafael
  (4:10 PM)

BHop DEFINITELY can beat Pascal.

Dan Rafael
  (4:11 PM)

Ok, Freaks, thanks for chatting. Hope you enjoy all the blogs and news and notes from the week. Enjoy the fights this weekend and I'll talk to you next Friday from Las Vegas, where I will be covering Khan-Maidana. Enjoy your weekend. Peace.
