Chat with Bryan Broaddus

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:31 AM)

Good morning all or good afternoon if you are visiting from other locals...lets get started.

TD (Tampa)

How is Miles Austin's forearm and will dez bryant get back into the offense this week?

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:32 AM)

Miles is fine, had a chance to visit with him yesterday in the locker room and all is good. Dez needs to get ready for more of the same this week with a man over the top. Colts like simliar on D to what the Bears do in Cover 2.

Joe (Charlotte, NC)

Hey Bryan,What have you seen when it comes to the safety play of Dallas? Do you see any safeties in the draft that they might target or should target?

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:34 AM)

We all know that the Cowboys need a safety, maybe two. I will sit down after the season and grind on that tape and hit the combine to get those answers after the season, but I promise to have answers for you.

Steve O Show (Big D)

Everybody says Jerry has to go out and get a big name coach to fill seats. Isnt hiring Gruden or Cowher just a stop gap. Neither one of them have the intent or desire to coach for 10 years. Why not find the guy who can have long term success like Fisher or Belicheck?

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:35 AM)

I disagree with you on Gruden. Jon is a young guy, 46 or 47 years old...he wants to coach, he still would be in Tampa if they didn't fire him.

Anthony (Toronto)

How has Sean Lee graded the last few weeks? Is he our starting ILB next year?

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:37 AM)

Sean Lee has played much better. Learning to play the scheme and not be out of position. He tried to do too much, now playing the way the defensive coaches want him to play.

Michael (Boone, NC)

What weakness do you see on the Colts that the Cowboys can expose? Do you think we can pull off the win?

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:38 AM)

Colts are a different team, studied them against the Chargers and Pats...always hard to play in Indy, pressure from the Bolts and Pats gave the QB problems. Manning had some guys let him down on some drops. Need to handle Freeney and Mathis if the Boys are going to win.

Eric (New Jersey)

Hey Bryan, in your opinion how many games will Dallas win down the stretch and will it be enough to keep Garrett as Head Coach for 2011? Or do you think Jerry will go after a big name? (Gruden, Cowher, Etc.) Thanks

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:40 AM)

I will say this about Garrett, if Romo comes back and plays, there might be some questions about him getting this job, if Romo doesn't play, I think the job is his...just my view.

John (D)

Which two backs would you like to see in the backfield next season and which two will we actually see? I'm assuming this "three-headed monster" nonsense will be over with.

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:41 AM)

Jones, Choice and draft pick would be my three backs...

Lex (Calgary, AB)

Assuming there is Football next year what Free Agents do you see the Cowboys going after?

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:43 AM)

If Jerry will spend money, I have a feeling it will be in the offensive line...he has done it before but we need to see what will be there...watched the Pats guard the other day, mauler, brawler type of a player. Not pretty technique wise but a tough man.

Justin (Oxnard)

Have you EVER seen a guy snap the ball whenever he wants as much as Gurode?....In my opinion, if he does it again he should be handed his release papers in the locker room

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:44 AM)

This team needs a new center, no doubt.

JS Cowboy (NY)

Hello Bryan, could you ever see Terence Newman move over to Free Safety? If they can find another corner in the draft, could he fill that spot?

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:47 AM)

I would put Orlando Scandrick at safety before I would try Newman. I just think you need more of a physical player back there. Have seen Scandrick come forward and make tackles. Besides, there are some packages where he lines up at safety as well.

Jerico (The OC)

Is it realistic to try and completely revamp the O Line in one offseason? Replacing Colombo, Davis and Kosier?

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:49 AM)

I think you have to give it a try, I want to see Young play some snaps this season. I am not asking for the whole game, just a series in the first and one in the second. The best this team can be is 8-8, give young guys a chance.

Justin (Oxnard)

was that you getting an ice cream cone at "the habit" right before the san diego pre-season train ride?

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:50 AM)

The Habit is a great place to eat, and yes it probably was me.

John (New Jersey)

Bryan - would it be better to blitz Manning or rush 3 to 4 to create pressure? Also, should corners play off or bump and run?

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:52 AM)

The more pressure they can create on Manning the better. The Colts tackles play soft and the guards are not as good as they have been in the past. Need to get to Manning but he does such a nice job of getting rid of the ball. Quick death before slow death in my book.

Joe (Charlotte, NC)

Will Jay Ratliff have a field day against that offensive line of the Colts because they don/t look like the same line?

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:55 AM)

Jeff Saturday is a veteran center but again, the guard play has been up and down. Good chance for Ratliff and Brent to attack the middle of this pocket to cause problems.

Bill_In_DC (Washington, DC)

Can you tell anything about Jeremy Parnell? Do the Cowboys consider him to be a potential player in the future or did they just sign him to fill out the bottom of the roster?

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:57 AM)

Parnell looks like a guy that should be playing power forward in the NBA. He is in the system but really needs to develop bulk and strength. Looks the part of an athlete.

Peyton (Minnesota)

what can we expect from Tashard Choice sunday?

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:58 AM)

With Choice, you will see a determinded ball player that feels like this will be his best shot this season to prove he deserves more playing time. He has vision and he has power, with the way this line blocks at times, he will need both.

Matt (Meridian)

How do we have the highest payroll, when we cut so many high priced players, didn't sign any new free agents, and had nearly 25 million dollars of dead cap space opened up this year?

Bryan Broaddus
  (11:59 AM)

That is a question I cannot answer...

Zack (Virginia)

Do you think romo will make an attempt to play later In the season ?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:00 PM)

Romo said that this time of year, football players play football...if it was me, he doesn't see the field. Kitna has been fine, give McGee a look to. There is no reason for Tony to play.

Ralph (Massachusetts)

What do you think the Cowboys will do with Martellus Bennett this off-season? His contract is up after the 2011 season and another team is likely to over-pay for him in 2012. The Cowboys were supposedly offered a second round pick for him last season. Do you think his value has fallen since then?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:03 PM)

The Cowboys were offered nothing for Bennett, that info was false. He is a huge talent that doesn't always play that way. Thought he would be more of a dominate player but it just hasn't happened. John Phillips is in rehab and should be better next year.

Tyler (Brewer, ME)

Can you name the players that are "Wades" guys and those that are garretts

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:07 PM)

That is really hard to say, I spoke with several players the last few days that have told me that if Garrett gets this job, they feel like they are done.

Zach (CT)

Why do you think Garrett's job hinges on Romo? Or did you mean that if HE plays Romo he is still trying to win the job and if HE sits him then he knows he doesn't have to win to get the job?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:08 PM)

If Romo plays, in my view...Garrett is still trying to win the job, if not, Jerry will name him the coach.

Bob (Corpus Christi, Tx)

Since the season's aspiration for a playoff birth have all but heard a bugle, how much play by young players and who will be seeing quite a bit more carpet time during games?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:11 PM)

Again, I am not saying that all these guys should start but lets see, Young, Lee, McCray, Church and McCann. You need to know about these guys as you move forward and into free agency and the draft.

John (Texas)

Every time a question is asked about the draft you always differ to after the season. I know you have at least taken a peek on whats out there. Whats the harm in giving us your insight?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:12 PM)

My harm is that I study tape. I break down games. That was my job for 13 years. I don't want to tell you folks something about players that isn't true. Not fair to you guys.

Kim K (LA)

Whats up with Miles? Is he a good start this week and are teams doubling Dez now more? will Kitna have time to throw the ball downfield?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:14 PM)

Miles is fine, the Colts play a defense simliar to what the Bears play. The rush for the Colts is very good, if they don't protect, they will struggle to throw the ball.

Derrick (Michigan)

Should the cowboys think about drafting a QB this year or is Tony Romo a super bowl QB

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:17 PM)

I learned in Green Bay, draft a QB every year, there is a good chance that you might hit on one that you can move for a better pick or he is a solid player.

Gary (Carrollton)

do you think a new defensive coordinator would consider switching back to a 4-3 defense next year with say Ware, Brent, Ratliff, Spencer as the front four and getting some real linebackers?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:18 PM)

I think that this team is committed to playing in the 3-4 regardless who the next coach is.

Dave (Saskatoon)

can you elaborate on your comment: "if Garrett gets the job, they feel like they are done"? Did they mean that Garrett will cut them? Or that Garrett does not have potential as a head coach, and the team will be bad next year if he wins the job?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:19 PM)

Yes, there are several players that feel that if Garrett is named the head coach, they will be elsewhere in 2011.

Neal Shepard (Dallas)

Will Jerry be in his suite while watching the Falcons beat the Jets in the Super Bowl?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:20 PM)

I think he was thinking of the Chargers and Saints...

John C. (Tulsa)

I'm not sure I understand the "magic" of the tape given the substantial failure rate associated with NFL draft picks, especially in Dallas. Something is missing in the evaluation process.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:22 PM)

The only way you can fully understand players is to watch them on tape. I really don't know any other way to put that...

Dave (Saskatoon)

Why does the pass rush seem to be so bad lately? I just dont see the Cowboys putting heat on quarterbacks like they did last year.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:26 PM)

That is a great question. I know that Ware has 9.5 sacks but does it seem like they have been few and far between? Spencer was my selection before the season for all world...he has not played anywhere as good as he was last season. I really thought he was going to have a better season than Ware but he is so far from it.

Neal Shepard (Dallas)

The pass rush helps the defensive backs and they in turn help the pass rush.Which is weakest link?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:28 PM)

The defensive backs have been the weak link on this defense. The line hasn't been much better but the secondary has been terrible.

Tommy (Dallas)

Why is everyone enamored with Jason Garrett? Hasn't the offense not looked the same as it did prior to the interim assignment (sans the Giants game) - very up and down. I think the defense has improved much more than the offense, your thoughts?

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:29 PM)

Its about the whole processes and I totally agree with you. Don't make a mistake because of two wins. Look at the whole body of work then make your call.

Bryan Broaddus
  (12:31 PM)

Speaking of Jason Garrett, he has called us to the practice field, thanks so much for your time. Have a great weekend and continue to follow us on ESPN Dallas.com. We just added Todd Archer from the Dallas Morning News to the team so check him out...
