Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

MW here reporting for duty. G & R blasting on my iPod. Let's tear this chat up today.

Mike (Boca Raton)

when?

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

Now Brother. Now.

phil (san deigo)

Are the Chargers going to make a deep postseason run?

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

They got to get there first! KC is legit. But I do think SD gets to the post season. Prob wins a game. Then loses...the usual.

Luke (Waterdown, ON)

Henne was great on Sunday, save that one bad interception. However, like you, I thought he'd be more polished at this point. What is the most important thing he has to work on? Staring off receivers? Progressions?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

But I am still a Henne fan. For sure. Remember, he has only started like 20ish games in his life at this level. I think Henne has always ran hot and col. Has some cold spells-hard to put a finger on why. I don't think he is yet great at those two things you mentioned either.

Sergio (Fresno,CA)

Morning Matt.so with the raiders juggling quarterbacks, do you see them drafting a quarterback in next years draft? if yes, who?

Matt Williamson
  (12:04 PM)

I don't know the prospects well enough, but Mallet sure seems like their type of downfield passer. Will they go QB? I would strongly consider it, but wow, were they ever burned the last time they tried that trick. I feel like they have two almost-adequate QBs right now. Not saying that I would reach for a 1st round QB either though. If the value is there, yes. If not, go another direction.

Tim (San Diego)

Still not sold on Bolts D?

Matt Williamson
  (12:04 PM)

Pretty sold

wes (gastonia)

Is Jacoby Ford the fastest wr in the nfl? What is his upside steve smith in the good years?

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

He is extremely impressive. JUST turned in my Rookie Report for this week and Ford has now made an appearance. C Johnson and M Wallace are in Ford's class in terms of playing speed, but not sure who else I can come up with.

Mike (Boca Raton)

What's the risk that the loser of the Steelers/Ravens game does not make the playoffs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

Guess it could happen. Certainly does not seem like a stretch that the AFC West could have two playoff teams now. But I still think Balt/PGH/NEng/Jets are all going to the post season.

Brad (Beverly, Ma)

Chad Henne finally delivered against a pretty good D too. Think he keeps it up for the rest of the year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

Again-have always been a fan. I didn't agree with it at the time at all, but maybe sitting Henne down did some good. Work harder? Tough for me to speculate. But I do think Miami has their QB.

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

Live "Patience" now...Axl really getting after it.

Jeff (Nashville)

What's your outlook on the Packers? All 4 losses by a field goal. I still they can make a deep playoff run, even without much of a run game. But I'm a homer, so what's your call? Imagine if they had Grant and Finley...

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

Imagine if they had Grant and Finley! They were my Super Bowl rep in the NFC preseason pick. But I tend to think that lack of a running game will get them at some point in the playoffs. I really like their D. Love Rodgers. So so on the coaching.

CC (Atlanta)

Will you please pick the Bucs to beat ATL after your Ravens/Packers picks recently!

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Oh...you noticed those, huh? lol...wow, I was awfully close on both! But can't do it CC (Duville).

Bill S. (Wisconsin)

If Green Bay dosen't catch up to Chicago, do they get the wild card or who does?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

I think they get in. Betting on the North and South to have the Wild Card reps.

Curt (NJ)

Devin McCourty is a beast! Best CB in the draft class of 2010?

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

By far. Pretty high on my Rookie Report this week too. And I did the feature on him. Should be up tomorrow. Check it out Curt. McC and Bodden next year...

Brad (Beverly, Ma)

Fav GNR song? Mr. Brownstone for me. Civil Wars is up there too.

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Paradise City...a few other great ones for sure. But I would say that is #1. What we've got here is failure to communicate...btw, watch Cool Hand Luke if you haven't already.

BSB (Philly)

Do you think to much was made of the D.A situation in AZ? Even in a blow out, a team mate should be able to pick you up with some encouragement. As a fan, I do not think I should know what they discussed, it's a locker room thing. What are your thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

Very overblown. The guy is allowed to smile. You can smile at a funeral. He wasn't doing cart wheels or stand up. Think anyone brings it up if it were Manning or Brady? It looks bad because DA stinks.

CC (Atlanta)

Best GNR song -- "My Michelle" from Appetite.

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

Appetite start to finish just flat out rocks. One side of Lies.

wes (gastonia)

Is Kansas City turning into an every year contender? When you look at the roster they have a lot of really talented young players.

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Could be. Very well coached on both sides of the ball. Not 100% sold on Cassel yet, but very impressed for sure. Guys like McCluster and Berry will get much better. Don't love the DL and could use another pass rusher on D opposite Hali.

Ram (Princeton)

Hows the Reggie Bush Situation looking? You think he might get some touches this week Mr. Willaimson?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

More than last week. Can you say rusty? Wow. I have faith. Will get more and more on his plate.

Tim (San Diego)

Does Rivera remain w/ Bolts next season, or will he be tapped for a HC job?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

He seems quite ready, doesn't he?

George (Ireland)

How talented are the Falcons? If they didn't game plan so well and played with such discipline as Smith has taught them, where do you think they would rank among the elite, if at all?

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Not that far off, but coaching is certainly a strong point of that organization. Exceptional young QB, but not the most "Talented". Same with the OL. I hear ya. But very well built team from a GM stand point.

James (Wichita, Ks)

Curious to know if you agreed with Terry Bradshaw on his top 10 list of QB's under 30? Especially Bradford. Thanks

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Didn't see it. But...HUGE believer in Bradford here. If #12 has Bradford high, than I am cool with that.

henry (san diego)

bill,do you think tolbert will be the #1 or will he split with matthews when back?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Bill? Bill? Ed, please throw a flag on Henry. Come on man.

James Harrison (Pittsburgh)

Yo, dude. Do you know how many times I hit people exactly the same way as I did Sunday without anything happening? Don't tell me they haven't changed the rules.

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Got that right James. Keep up what you are doing.

David (NY NY)

"Gentle Giant" Matt Williamson: I was looking at the QB stats today, and Eli Manning has been sacked less frequently than anyone. Impressive with the makeshift offensive line, don't you think?

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

No question. That is an aspect of Eli's game that he has improved upon-quietly. Like Big Bro. Not an easy guy to get to.

Eric (San Jose)

Gore done for the season and a greatly diminished chance to draft Luck, that's what I call a pyrrhic victory for the Niners.

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

They weren't going to pick #1 anyways Bro. Carolina has that one all but wrapped up.

Curt (NJ)

Your analysis on Jason Pierre-Paul? He looked good against a banged up Jags OL, recorded 2 sacks and FF in that game. What are the odds he develops into a pass-rushing monster like Ware or Osi?

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

JPP is coming along well. Baby steps...like Bob Wiley. In the end, I bet he is a better pass rusher than Osi ever was.

BSB (Philly)

We do need the Chat Ref here today.

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

How often do I call for him? Where is he? Ed Hulkali, don't you have my back today?

Marcus (Philly)

Whats going on with the Eagles? Its not like the defense has added players but they are getting the job done. Almost feels like the Saints D from last year. Lots of take aways to get the job done. Is the Philly D legit or are they going to have problems down the stretch?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

Didn't play great last week-but they really were extremely light at CB. Very well coached. A lot of movable and versatile parts. T Cole is a total stud. Graham is quickly improving. S Bradley being back in the middle and healthy is huge. A find at DT in Dixon. Allen has fallen off, but is better than what they had at FS last year. I am a believer.

Eric (San Diego)

Do you think Carolina goes with Luck over AJ Green? That would make it the second straight year where the Panthers draft a QB with their top pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

But Clausen isn't Luck...at least from what I have read on Luck. I can live with Gettis, Smith and LaFell.

Derek (MN)

Drop Hernandez for Olsen? Have Keller, but my TEs are killing me!

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Olsen doesn't get a lot of targets, but he gets a lot of red zone attention. So yes. Not sure why Hernandez has dropped off so much. Prob because Gronk has just been better. But NEng's O is just so hard to predict. Very game to game.

Curt (NJ)

Most impressive undrafted rookie so far? Keiland Williams, Chris Ivory, Legarrette Blount, Blair White, etc have all looked good.

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

I guess Blount, but I would say that he is a bit overrated. Big boy, but doesn't always run like it. Not a ton of snap in his hips or elusiveness. All are decent though for sure. Not an easy call, but K Williams just hasn't had the touches.

BSB (Philly)

Good to here you comment on Dixon, he's been great. Is Broderick Bunkley now trade bait? or do the Eagle finally have 3 good DT?

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

Wouldn't trade Bunkley unless there was a contract issue. Need 3. Rotation can be extremely effective.

David (NY NY)

People who say you don't change your mind should note your open-mindedness with Colt McCoy.

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

Nice David. Nice. Heck, I am often wrong. Predictions are not an easy thing!

Jay (SD)

Does Dez Bryant get back on track this week?

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

They did throw his way-just never connected. Communication issues? Not sure. But I have tremendous faith in Dez. Superstar in the making.

Stevie (TX)

Have you seen any improvement in Clausen that would make the Panther back off from Luck if they get the number 1 pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

Not enough improvement. Not saying Clausen is a bust. But if Luck is a P Manning/Elway/Bradford type prospect, you draft him.

Derek (MN)

Going back to the TE, so you like Olsen more than Keller for the rest of the year - since the Jets seem to go down field more with Holmes now in the mix....

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

I think so. Don't trust Sanchez in the bad elements. Keller will get more targets though. Olsen is a better TD guy. Guess it depends on your scoring system.

Kevin Boss (Meadowlands)

Have you seen some of the shots I take? Damn being huge.

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Big target! And you don't get out of the way very well! Short career?

Mike (Boca Raton)

How do you feel about trading C. Palmer to the Cardinals?

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

What does Zona want with Palmer?

Mike (IN)

So, is it safe to say that Brady Quinn is a bust, or just always in a terrible position?

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

Both. Haven't seen him do a good thing in the NFL though.

cindy (mass)

when is polian gonna admit that donald brown is no nfl back

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

But what other choice does he have right now? I bet if Hart were healthy, he would be getting the bulk of the carries.

Jonathan (New Canaan)

MW..I'm a avid listener, and like your stuff...generally..but you've been too hard on Sanchez. For example, earlier this year you weren't 'a Colt McCoy believer'..as of yesterday, you were a buyer and what has that guy done? All Sanchez does is win football games and all you do is stand on your soap box...give it up

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

I didn't think McCoy had a chance. Now I do. Not ready to call him a Franchise QB. And McCoy wasn't the 3rd pick in the draft. Sanchez is much better than McCoy-and I have written good things about Sanchez. But I don't see him as a Franchise guy-will take a LOT to make me change my mind on that.

Sam (Chicago)

Matt-I know hindsight is 20/20, but do you think the Redskins would have been better off keeping Jason Campbell and the draft picks rather than trading for McNabb? Rocket Queen is my personal favorite off of Appetite. Thanks

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Yes...and then drafting a QB high.

David (Dallas, TX)

Am I crazy to think that the Cowboys should convert Newman to FS and draft CB in the top 10 with 2 top 10 CB prospects?

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Not sure about moving Newman, but I would not object at all to Dallas taking a CB in the top 10.

Mike (Boca Raton)

What do the steelers see in FS Ryan Clark? He can't tackle but makes up for it by rarely being in a position to make a play on the ball in pass coverage.

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

I do think he has become somewhat of a liability. Doesn't run well.

Danny (INDY)

Poliian has bigger problems than RB,nobody short of Barry Sanders could run behind that line.

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

That is extremely true too. Their OL stinks.

Mike (Brooklyn)

Santonio Holmes has been far more important to the Jets than Sanchez. Sanchez is nothing special and his numbers don't reflect how poorly he's played at times.

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Very much agree. Wow-most of you know what you are talking about. Holmes is great btw.

Dan (AZ)

What are your top 5 NFL stadium enviornments? My choices... KC, Denver (Pre McD era), Pitt, Dallas, Philly.

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Honestly-haven't been to very many. Watch games on the plasma in my man cave.

wes (gastonia)

Am I the only person that gets upset whenever some says the qb won the game? No the team won the game. A qb can easily loss a game for you but unless they pull a vince young rose bowl they should get the credit for the win.

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

I mostly am with you on that. Back to my boy Sanchez. He throws a terrible pass up for grabs very late in the game vs. Denver. Gets a PI that the DB never should have taken and all of a sudden Sanchez is the Comeback Kid. He hits Holmes on a three yard slant that Holmes takes to the house...so Sanchez was the hero.

Jamaal Charles (Canton, OH)

Didn't you compile a top 10 RB list earlier this year? Ahhhh, snap.

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Hey Bro, you were mentioned and if I did it today, you would be on it. You were #11 if you recall and I was torn between you, Mendenhall and McCoy. Those other two are no slouches. But you are still a part time guy!

Hugo (Belo Horizonte.)

The Raiders have no first rond pick to waste on a quarterback.

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Oh yeah...

BSB (Philly)

Going forward who would you rather have a RB, L. McCoy, F. Jones, A. Bradshaw? Who do you think has the brightest future?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

McCoy, but it depends what you want from the position. In Philly, McCoy for sure. Best receiving potential. Best wiggle. Worst power. Bradshaw runs the hardest, but gets banged up and puts the ball on the ground. He might have just peaked. I do like Felix, but the least production and also injury prone.

Jeff (NY, NY)

Matt, I don't disagree with what you said regarding Sanchez above, but you can also say that his receiver's dropped 7 balls and had 2 taken out of their hands against Green Bay and it looks like he can't throw in the elements.

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

All true. The Elements aspect of Sanchez is my #1 worry. We surely will revisit this in a month or two. But he looked terrible in the weather in that game. Wrong part of the country and wrong division to be playing in to have that as a weakness. Along those lines, I want to see it from Fitzpatrick as well.

Jonathan (New Canaan)

Ok..let's talk about a QB you love: Big Ben...was well hidden in the first SB victory...if not for a great catch, would have not gotten a 2nd victory...has been, at best, average this year...remeber..Sanchez led a late drive to get to OT, so Holmes could make that run v Detroit...the throw to Edwards vs Houston was dropped in between coverage...stop hatin' (and I know you hate 'hatin')

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

I don't love Roethlisberger. Extreme sand lot tendencies. The most reliant QB in the league on his pure physical ability. But very much a big game player and handles the elements better than anyone. And Ben is having a WAY better year than Sanchez. Ben has been way above average-go back and watch him vs. the Pats. Those two are not even comparable in any way. Try again.

Tim (So Cal)

Bad call, Hernandez is going to have a huge game this week

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Perhaps. Just so tough to count on him. Hey, he is my FF TE.

Justin (ATL)

Does Matt Ryan continue to impress you? Or is this just the status quo for him now?

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Continues to impress. He is now officially great in my eyes. That Balt game was a huge one for that.

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

November Rain live now...tremendous

Jim (NYC)

How come in your "comeback kid" snarl, you didn't mention the 70 yard bomb to Braylon, then a perfect fade pass to win it?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

That was wonderful. In fact, I ALWAYS give Sanchez credit for playing his best when it matters most. He has done that since joining the league-and that impresses me. But, if I were starting a team, I could come up with MANY QBs I take ahead of your boy. "It's not personal Tom. Strictly business."

Jake (UT)

Why is everyone forgetting about how good Perry Fewell has been as Giants D-coordinator? He has to be in some talks for HC jobs next year.

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Agreed. Really changed that D around. Does have better players though btw.

Stevie (TX)

With Goodson coming on strong, do you think that Panthers will resign Willaims or part ways with him and stick to Stewart/Goodson?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Stewart/Goodson. I would think they would love to Franchise DeAngelo and then deal him for picks. They need picks.

Tom (Newark)

Based on your (accurate) opinion of Sanchez and the elements, like the Pats Monday?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Very much so. BB will take away the run. I know Brady can throw in the elements. I don't know if Sanchez can or not...but I have a hunch that he can't.

Xander (Philly)

I know its crazy, but I'm excited to be a Bills fan. 3 OT losses to all good teams and a 3 point loss to the 8-3 Bears. Can they be playoff contenders next year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Should be excited. Good hire with Gailey apparently. Playoff contender? In that division? Probably not. But let's see what they add this off season.

TJ (NYC)

What are the chances the Raiders make this sunday's game against the chargers close? They are 3-0 in the divison.

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Smelling a SD blow out. Teams going in very different directions.

Jonathan (New Canaan)

For what it's worth, give me a QB that wins games. Sanchez has 26 games under his belt and has shown a knack to win games. You're a Steeler fan...Terry Bradshaw wasn't always pretty, but he has a lot of jewlery. Thanks for the comments...

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

Winning is the bottom line, but like a pitcher in baseball or a goalie in hockey-it isn't ALL on the QB. Fine line. To me-esp last year-Sanchez was a liability on a team that was loaded on D and with a tremendous running game. Sanchez has improved since then...but do you think he could do what Bradford has done in STL for example? Be honest with yourself. I don't at all. STL would have 2 wins with Sanchez.

Gracie (San Diego)

Getting away from the Sanchez debate... Bolts have 5 picks on the first day--4 in the first 2 rounds (assuming the 3rd for Cromartie becomes a 2nd). What should be their shopping list?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

The Sanchez talk tires me. If V-Jax departs, I would add a WR for Rivers. A pass rusher opposite Phillips. OL help. Not a long list of needs.

CC (Atlanta)

Just imagine how good the Jets would be if they had Ryan, Flacco or Bradford. NYJ is good in spite of Sanchez.

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

They would be the best team in the league by a wide margin.

George (Ireland)

Who are your prob bowl QBs in each conference?

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

They take three right? AFC: Rivers and Brady are no brainers. Guess you have to give it to Manning too over Orton or Cassel. There is an argument there though. NFC: Vick and Ryan and Rodgers. Does anyone compare to those three?

Mike (Ny)

Like most of your work, but you speak to absolute in a very unforgivning business. I like that you belive in yourself but you come across to condesending. You don't have to like Sanchez, not your type of guy, got it. You like guys with bigger arms, but there is VERY real chance Sanchez is way better than you thought and even you have to see that.

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

It can happen. I often say I am wrong. You might just not be listening. I don't hate Sanchez. Just don't think he is a Franchise QB. Enough. Is that condescending? If so, so be it. You should sit in a personnel meeting some time. Scouts have opinions. Nothing is absolute. I thought Matt Jones would be a star WR in the NFL. I didn't think AJ Hawk or Sean Lee was good enough to play at Pitt. I was wrong. Relax.

James (Indy)

Dubbster, do you think there's something wrong with Manning, other than that burtal O-line? He's been hit a ton this season and maybe there's an undisclosed nagging injury?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

I really went into this on yesterday's podcast. I think he is just crippled by his team. 18's greatest asset is his mind-presnap-to get his team into very winnable situations time and time again. Well, now, he can't go to a run game. He can't go deep. He can't use D Clark as a WR/TE to exploit D personnel.

David (NY NY)

Is Peyton Hillis really an NFL-caliber starting RB, or a one-year wonder and product of his offensive line?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

He is an animal. I really doubt he stays healthy, but for as long as he does-feed him. David, NO ONE fears the Browns passing game..and Hillis still dominates. Also very versatile. Big time starting caliber RB.

Larry (Pasco, WA)

How good is P Rivers? T Dilfer said he is playing the best QB in the league right now. Who is playing the best at the QB position this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Rivers is. MVP. Super Star.

Adam (Jersey)

Could make the argument for Garrard in the AFC if the Jags continue to win too... Not necessarily over Manning, Orton or Cassel, but it's possible.

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

He crossed my mind and has played well. But I would take all those others over him.

Mike (Madison, WI)

Obomanu: flash in the pan or here to stay?

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Flash. Slow. Could be Mike Williams Lite I guess.

Dan (Denver)

Wow, these Jets fans are so defensive, aren't they? Anyway, McDaniels a goner after the season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

It amazes me how many times I have to say the same things over and over about Sanchez. There isn't a player in this league that I talk more about. Insane.

wes (gastonia)

Do you think Hakeem Nicks has the best hands in the game?

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

In the conversation. Will say that I am very partial to Larry Fitzgerald, but there are tons of exceptional hand catchers out there. Nicks has massive strong hands though for sure.

Adam (Jersey)

Mike Williams (Seattle) Lite?

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Yes...sorry...should have specified

Iggy (Portland)

How responsible is Antonio Garay for the resurgent Charger defense? Guy looks like an absolute beast.

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

He has been great. Have really liked him for a long time, but he is ALWAYS hurt. Tremendous find.

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Folks, I am out. Great stuff as usual. Adios
