Chat with Jesse Rogers

Jesse Rogers
  (1:04 PM)

Hey folks, welcome to our weekly Hawks chat. Glad you're here. Great win last nihgt. Hawks have the day off. They seem to be on a roll. Hopefully its the real thing. Tons to talk about but before we do, dont forget Ill be doing an hour of hockey talk with Tomas Kopecky tomorrow at 6 pm live on Espn 1000 from Binny's in Bolingbrook.Stop by or tune in. Ok, lets talk some hawks

Jen (Rockford)

When will we see Jordan Hendry again? Given Boynton's propensity for sloppy turnovers that result in goals, I would think it might be time to put Hendry back in for a game or two.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:06 PM)

I would think soon. It hasnt really come up recently because of so many other storylines but Ill ask Q tomorrow about him. Boynton might need a game as you say..

Sam (Naperville)

Random question that I've always been curious about: where do call-ups stay when they're up with the big club? Obviously they aren't likely to maintain homes in the NHL city, so does team services help set them up in a hotel or do they typically stay with teammates?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:08 PM)

They set them up at a hotel..Im sure its happened where a player might stay at a teammates...actually, if Morin is up at least until Hossa returns, its a good question to ask him...cause a few days in a hotel is one thing...not sure if he'd do weeks...famously, Kane stayed with Stan Bowman his rookie yr. Ill ask Morin tomorrow what his plans are but for a short term call-up its a hotel

Aaron (St. Charles)

I believe the salary cap is the main reason why the NHL seems to have many fewer in-season trades than other leagues. What changes would you make to turn up the hot stove?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:11 PM)

Not much can be done except devise ways for exceptions where you exceed the cap, etc... Say, in-season trades are exempt from cap rules or something..obviously, there is a litany problems with that basic rule change but maybe you can put some limitations on it...or every team gets 2 trades with no cap issues...plenty of ways to tweak and IM sure they will next CBA..My guess is none that I just suggested would be it but you get the point...

Joe (Naperville)

If Morin proves himself worthy of staying after Hossa returns, who goes? Also, who does Morin play with then? Do you put him on a line with Hossa and Sharp and risk not capitalizing on Kopecky's improved play on that line?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:15 PM)

Little early..the guy's game could tank Friday...BUT, lets have some fun with it..first off, no one HAS to go...a forward would have to sit so im sure there would be some rotation..if they only want to keep so many on the roster..they could try to send Hendry down I suppose. seems like the obvious choice...but by then, there will probably be another injury so you cross that bridge when you come to it...he can play 2nd or 3rd line...proved last night he has some physical element to his game..so you mix and match...I would keep him in top 6 for now...kopy a vet, kind of streaky, he's fine on 3rd line

Scott (Vernon Hills)

Despite the lack of money and the re-vamp in the off season, where do you see the Hawks going around the trade deadline?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:16 PM)

I would say defense first for sure...then a center possibly...if they could upgrade 5/6 on D im sure they would

Eric (chicago)

if crawford continues to play at a high level, would it be smart for the hawks to try and lock him up into a longer contract sometime later in the season, maybe before the playoffs, so we don't have another niemi situation.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:18 PM)

In a perfect world, sure. And if he REALLY lights the world up the rest of this year, they might..BUT I doubt it..they need to take things one at a time when it comes to spending money and it sounds like they are working on seabs right now..

Gibbs (Chicago)

Do you think the goalie situation may play out exactly like last year with Crawford eventually overtaking Huet? Turco seems like whatever it takes to win and is a big supporter of Corey's

Jesse Rogers
  (1:21 PM)

I cant predict what will happen but as anyone knows that has read my blog, I wasnt a big fan of specifically choosing Turco over Niemi...for the money turco took not so bad though...anyway, always was told and thought crawford could eventually be the guy so i would not be surprised at all...I mean we did not pick up turco in his prime..pretty much the opposite...

Ryan (Barrie, Canada)

given the last couple games i know Q doesnt like to mess with things when they are winning but with the careless turnovers and the senseless fight last night that changed the momentum in a big way do you see exelby replacing boyton anytime soon? maybe just to get boyton's head back in the game?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:21 PM)

I definitely see him sitting a game..It happened earlier this year I believe in NY and he responded ok..so hendry or exelby maybe...might just need one game

Chris (Chicago)

Jeremy Morin looked good out there last night. While they may not all show up on the box score, his play was key in at least 3 of the Hawks' goals last night. Lets say Hossa isn't ready to return as Morin approaches the 10-game mark...Does he stay or go ?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:24 PM)

If he plays like that, he stays...Bowman KIND of revealed their plan over the weekend in L.A. Read my Q and A blog with him...he hints at it..basically saying Morin, Beach, and Leddy are all on the cusp but they dont want to rush it. HOWEVER, he does intimate that doesnt mean waiting until next season as much as next year as in a month from now or sometime in the 2nd half...morin may have just moved up his timetable..cant argue with that thinking..he played with more aggression ,etc last night than in his first 2 games earlier so maybe they know what they are doing with these young guys..keep them hungary and learning

Scott (Vernon Hills)

What player that's gone from the Championship team of last year do you miss the most? What player do the Blackhawks miss the most?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:26 PM)

First one easy: BUFF!...BTW, just names on the of the stars for November and I actually saw Norris Trophy and his name in same sentence in some hockey article..wow. Anywho, most would say Ladd...Ill stick with Buff but its a tough call cause BUff sleptwalk through a few stretches..I'll take last year's ladd and this years Buff!

Mark (Asheville NC)

So I know Morin will be around till Hossa comes back. In what scenario can he stay with the Blackhawks when Hossa returns???

Jesse Rogers
  (1:26 PM)

Umm..the scenario where Q tells Bowman I want this guy here.

Scott (Vernon Hills)

If you had to choose one to keep or to build the franchise around, who is it? Toews or Kane?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:28 PM)

I guess I have to go with what most would think is the obvious answer: Toews. Leadership is huge and he has it...I love Kane as a player...You need the kanes of the world to win but Toews can take a team and change its culture as well as play pretty good hockey

Gabe (Chicago)

Do you think it sends an extremely positive message to the rest of the team when you've got two of your elite players (Toews and Kane) both sticking up for the new guy on their line (Stalberg) in consecutive games now? That's gotta help chemistry right?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:30 PM)

No doubt..and i know we are so used to the cliches of long road trips but this one did make a difference..I see it and Q has seen it...I said it before the trip..they had no time with that schedule to "come together." this trip did it. Hell, I got to know some of the newcomers better. Dowell and I are tight. lol

Jarrett Kreger (Hinsdale)

If corey Crawford rightfully earns the starting spot, how willing is coach Q to give him that spot over the vereran Turco?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:32 PM)

See 2009-2010. and this guys isnt making 5.6. Absolutely would give it to him..In fact i asked Bowman stirght out: "Would it bother you if Crawford took the job?" "We're inthe business to win games" was his answer

John (Elk Grove)

Why is Sharp always the third guy in shootouts? i dont know his exact stats but i know they are not amamzing. I feel much more comfortable with Hossa.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:34 PM)

Ok, thats a random question. Q goes by feel. sharp has not been great at it. I agree with you on Hossa but hes not always lights out either. They do shootouts in practice every so often so Q sometimes refers back to that. Kind of a flip of the coin but I dont disagree with you..this year, though, sharp is a scoring machine so i can understand why

Jim (AZ)

Does Crawford deserve the start on Friday against VAN? He gave up a few goals last night, but he's been looking good.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:36 PM)

I would say yes, and I think he will get it. You dont take a goalie off a run like he's on AND he just beat Vancouver. Teams like using those barometers...PLus, up 5-1, the whole team let up..he was good when they needed him to be. early and very late...to me its eerie how this reminds me of last yr. huet and turco have not/did not bailed out their defense while niemi/crawford are and did. thats huge...keeps them from playing tight..they feel like someone has thier back when a mistake is made...

Jesse Rogers
  (1:36 PM)

Mike D (Chicago, IL)

Jesse, with the top 4 defenseman locked up for the next few seasons does this hold back some future blue liners such as LaLonde, Olsen or Leddy? Why don't we see one of these young defenseman learning more from the top 4 and seasoned vets such as Boynton or Cullimore now?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:38 PM)

No, depending on the cap stuff those guys will/can be here or be used as trade bait or maybe one of the top 4 is traded...dont know how things can turn out...but you saw my answer earlier on leddy, etc. the Hawks have a plan..let them learn in minors for a while--in fact bowman used hammer as an example--then they come up maybe 2nd half and are more ready, etc. but for the record he said beach, leddy, morin are "on the cusp"

Gibbs (Chicago)

I heard you on Waddle and Silvy today say it is just a matter of time before we see Nick Leddy again. Who will be the odd man out (Boyton, Hendry, Cullimore)?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:40 PM)

Again, this changes...right now, everyone is down on boynton though hard to find the difference with him and Culli...Q obviusly is down on Hendry..I just cant tell you right now..I still think Boynton has some upside and I cant dislike Hendry's wheels...Culli's margin for error is so small but hes survived this far so who know...

tim (Downers Grove)

do u think the hawks have turned the corner on the season

Jesse Rogers
  (1:43 PM)

Ill go with the easy answer and say yes...If anyone recalls a while ago..about 2 weeks or so,when they were still up and down I said I was buying what they were selling...and what they were selling was "our play is almost there, the results will come". One thing about Q, though you have to read between the lines (which Id like tothink Ive become an expert at!) he wont fool himself. when he sees it bad, he'll say it or address it but when he sees it coming--even without the results--he wont panic...it was coming. I have to admit the calgary game in aprticaulr made me waver...but hey, who says you are going to dominate a team just cause you did in the past so you have to look at bigger picture..guess I could have just stopped at yes to answer your question .lol

hawks fan for life (northside of chicago)

how important is this stretch of games at home??

Jesse Rogers
  (1:46 PM)

You sound like many of the media the last couple of days...they're all important when you are just 14-11-2..but these are no more important then when they go on the road...its all the same to me...sorry, if there is one question that annoys me (and from the look of them, most players) "How important is it to win at home?" I want one to say, "Not important at all. We'll win all our road games so we're good."

Nadia (Naperville, IL)

I'm sure a lot of people are impressed by Morin's showing last night, including the top brass. Do you think there's any chance he'd stay even after Hossa comes back?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:49 PM)

Just to re-iterate: yes. BUT, one game wont do it..he has a chance here (it looks like) for a couple weeks....lets take the extreme, if he plays like this for 2 weeks, no way he can go down..its if he levels off, they have to make a decision...and I cant tell you what that would be except to mention again what Bowman said over the weekend..it wasnt the plan to have him here now so he has to prove he belongs..for more than one game but man, simply put, his motor was running last night...

Mike (Skwarek)

What do you think about our goalie situation with crawford in net?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:53 PM)

Posted a little about it already so look back but will add that the way Q will handle this will be just like last yr out of respect to the veteran. He will NEVER say Craw is No. 1, he'll just keep playing him and we'll be the ones to say it. The worst he'll say--my guess-is "we have two goalies and Im playing the hot one right now." Question is if Craw takes it and earlier than last season, will Turco be the good soldier hes being now and the way Huet was last yr.? Pure class on Huet's part and you might think he had no choice but still, it was nice to see. Craw makes the big save at the clutch times, just like Niemi..I have not seen that consistently out of Turco...I dont think they liked his game in San Jose and he hasnt seen the ice since..ironic the guy he replaced beat him and who knows maybe sent him down a notch...long way to go though

Janice (Naperville)

Hey, Jesse did Kaner say anything about the break-away with John Scott or his sticking up for Stalberg? The last game had its "omigosh" moments.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:55 PM)

Did not ask about that...Too much going on..Hey, i found out that Bickell won the belt for you. Everyone always asks me that...

Jesse Rogers
  (1:56 PM)

FYI..John Scott won it for beating up westgarth the game before so whoever "owns" it gives it out for next game and Im guessing there were too many candidates or Scott just wanted to tweak everyone so he gave it to his roomate and buddy..

Ilija (Arizona)

I heard you on radio say that Bowman has a process, but I really want Leddy up here for either Boynton/Cullimore. What is your opinion on why he isn't up yet for good?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:57 PM)

What I said on the radio..I asked Bowman straight out: "Is leddy better than some of your d-men?" He def did not say no but talked about how they brought along hammer( called up in 2nd half) and they would go similiar route with these guys as long as they deserve it so my guess is--all things being equal--sometime in New Year

Kathy Kinney (Genoa)

Hey Jesse, so any updates on the contract with Seabrook?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:59 PM)

Keeping it VERY quiet but talks are going on. I think it will get done...Thought before the season there was that small chance they just could not pay all their D top dollar so maybe he was the odd man out cause he was up next but thats not the case so i would imagine sometime this season barring something crazy

Joe Koperski (Lisle)

Any chance that the Hawks can trade for Adrain Acouin so they can re-unite Cullimore with Acouin??

Jesse Rogers
  (1:59 PM)

One question: WHY? Brings back bad memories

The General (Bloomington, IN)

You tweeted last night that the game was huge. When it got to 5-4 and the Hawks actually pulled away again struck me as one of those moments that define a season. A month ago they would have dropped that game. Am I reading too much into one game?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:02 PM)

Yes and No. It follows a tren of recent play that they can extend leads and play clutch hockey in the face of adversity...(again, thats why Calgary stunned me cause it did not follow the trend) however, trends and runs die out..so at 14-11-2 its just too early to say anything definitively but feeling better about everything simply makes sense..oh, and follow me on twitter folks at @espnchihawks. tell your friends! I get paid a buck for every follower. no i dont. i wish. id be soliciting on the street!

Jesse Rogers
  (2:03 PM)

That last line did not come out right. lol

Jay (Chicago)

This is well down the road, but can the Hawks really hold onto Kane, Toews and Keith for the duration of their careers? I have my doubts. Toews is making a lot less than he can demand.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:05 PM)

Keith is locked up...it will be intersting to see what happens in 5 yrs with the other two...they dont seem to be greedy and they started so young they are going to make a ton..why would they leave? I suppose Kane could go to buffalo but even he has said this is a dream situation..I would love to see them play thier whole careers here. Would be great in this day and age..Maybe sign same contract again. i love those two. perfect yin and yang. He really is captain serious.

Lei (Chicago)

Does Cornelison travel with the team?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:05 PM)

Favorite question of all time. He sings at the visiting arenas...No.

David (Atlanta)

Great article on Morin, Jesse. The kid looked really good last night! My question - why do so many Hawks fans dislike Kopecky? I think the guy's a good player and brings a lot of intangibles to the table. Every so often, he also has a 3 or 4 point game like last night.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:09 PM)

Yeah, well, I have grown to like him and not just because Im doing a radio show with him starting tomorrow. He works hard, is a good teammate, and DOES THE BEST WITH HIS PHYSICAL SKILLS. that includes hands that arent exactly kane like. Its not his fault that Q plays him on a top line..but he does have a great shot, can play physical and youre right has some nights like last night every so often...hes just not hte guy I want to see in a 2 on 1..he does leave pts on the ice...Toews told me last night he'd LOVE to have Kopy's shot..Kopy, btw, real humble after the game...Plus,I have some highlihgts to play for the show tomorrow!

Jay (Wrigleyville)

Sharp is in the top four in the league in goals. Will he finish the season there?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:10 PM)

I'll go with yes...He gets prime chances on the point on the pp and he just seems to be finding the scoring areas 5 on 5..some yrs it comes together for you and this seems to be one for him

Mark (Lockport)

Jesse,I asked you a few weeks ago and you said to ask you again in a few weeks...so what teams are your surprise teams this year? And what "Former Stanley Cup Hawk" is having the biggest impact with their new team?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:12 PM)

If I recall I said I thought St. Louis would come down to Earth..I know I thought it. It has to be columbus. I dont know how they are doing it. Not that talented. Thats the surprise of the league..even more than Dallas

Russ Lyewski (Chicago)

If you could pick any player you wouldnt want to see running a 2-on-1 with Kane, would it be John Scott??? That was quite a sight last night..

Jesse Rogers
  (2:13 PM)

yeah, i tweeted it was like Manute Bol and Mugsy Bogues running the break..ill follow up on that tomorrow

08yankeefan08 ((library))

are you ready to say the blackhawks are back to stanley cup form even though they almost blew a 5-1 lead last night?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:14 PM)

Nope. Need moe evidence defensively in general..but much closer than 3 weeks ago

Paige (Cleveland)

What is going on with Bolland this year? He is just not looking that great

Jesse Rogers
  (2:16 PM)

Hard to say..tough guy at times to track down in dressing room. He showers quickly! Umm, could he be hurting? I suppose..still does some little things that help but not a good yr for him. didnt have a great game last night...I wish I knew..when I have talked to him about it, kind of goes back and forth..as long as he can play shut down D, that might be good enough for me

Chris (Lockport)

Exelby is a NHL veteran D man, which is obviously the Hawks weakness. With Boynton and Hendry struggling for the majority of this season, why haven't we seen him yet? Will we see him any time soon?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:17 PM)

They just singed him to NHL contract so that was the first step...I wish i could tell you for sure but I would imagine if they keep winning they wont change much but when the drop a few, that would one of the first moves, on D

Joey (Ann Arbor)

Will Crawford get the start in net until the Hawks lose one?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:18 PM)

Im going to say, most likely..dont think they have any back to backs real soon cause thats an easy time to split them..so, yes. unless he looks just awful in a win i suppose. was not the case last night

Greg (San Rafael,CA)

Jesse, John Scott has proved he is a good fighter, but what does he have to do to play more minutes?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:19 PM)

Not much more he can do. Play in the offenseive zone and cycle the puck. And beat people up!

dave (IL)

Seems like we're missing the big body in front of the net. Do you think Bowman can/will find that guy before the deadline?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:20 PM)

I think they think they have enough...kopy has been more than adequate, browuer goes there, toews sometimes..they dont grow on trees. I dont think thats an issue

Mike (Brookfield , IL)

Jesse , Whats the key to winning Friday nights matchup w/ the Canucks?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:21 PM)

Past history would suggest play up tempo, discipline, let bolland loose on the sedins, and pray that Luongo is in net.

Dane (Logan Square)

doesn't it seem like kopecky is always getting hammered with cross checks and elbows down low by every team? does he agitate and expect it coming or does he seem to get picked on?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:22 PM)

I have said about him..his bark is bigger than his bite..he doesnt throw the gloves down often but he is a mini agitator..but he does play an edgy game in tough areas so he brings it on

The Situation (Jersey Shore)

Why do only Kopecky and Stalsberg crash the net, other Hawks seem to play on the boards.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:23 PM)

I saw Kane crash it for a goal in each of last 2 games...there are more...

Thomas (Chicago)

Sharp is easily one of the best surprises this year, but who are the biggest disappointments? Bolland and Boynton seem to be up there.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:24 PM)

I would agree with Bolland..not Boynton. its all about expectations..i expected him to be No. 7 D-man...I thought Hendry would get a ton more time...so from a coaching perspective they must be down on hendry more than boynton cause at least one is playing...def thought I might see more out of brouwer and though bickell has shown flashes he had time on the top line last yr..doesnt deserve it this yr so there is a few

Keith (Chicago)

John Scott's fights are fun to watch. However, he is such a liability on the ice.... Is Q going to fall into this trap of continuing to suit him up on the fourth line, even when Hoss comes back, to play 4-6 minutes of ice time?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:26 PM)

Going to disagree. Yes, he CAN be a liability in his own zone but so can an fourth line...Ive liked him the offensive zone and I think Q would agree..He is limited. thats obvious but Ill take the trade off. slow feet, LONG arms if you know what Im saying

TC (Downers Grove)

What was up with Posoni last night? Even though he is not scoring much, I like him on the PK.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:26 PM)

Hurting. sat out. game to game..hes gotten better as season has moved along. never should have started on 2nd line.

Joe Koperski (Lisle)

Do you miss Burish?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:27 PM)

Im a reporter. what do you think?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:27 PM)

Few more questions

Pat (Dayton)

I feel like the Hawks are missing their physical aspect. It was good to see John Scott throw down the gloves recently. Do you think that the Hawks will trade for a decent big guy to help the team gain the toughness they lost in Byfuglien, Burish and eager?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:28 PM)

Maybe..I think they are still feeling it out..they have guys that can do it. Brouwer is like 7th in the league in hits..bickell can deliver a few..and any of these can fight if they need to but scott is there for that..They dont need new guys, the need their own guys to bring it more

TC (Chicago)

Jesse, great work as always. Question about the cap situation and Rockford: Is it possible to send Hendry down and sit Boynton and bring up Lalonde/Exelby and Leddy without having it be a problem? Would it effect keeping Morin up with the big boys? I'm not sure how much room Stan and the brass have to work with within the cap. Thanks!

Jesse Rogers
  (2:30 PM)

Stan said over the weekend, cap wasnt an issue with bringing those guys up...prob cant go beach, morin, and leddy but maybe two of three...wont happen like that til later though...and they arent brining up like 3 D-men...especially two rookies...

Mark (Asheville)

Off of pure assumption who do you think will lead the team in points this year?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:30 PM)

Kane. Just has to be. He has the puck too much not too.

Andrew (NYC)

Following up on an earlier Q, Seabrook is a free agent after this year.. is there a chance they won't re-sign him or trade his rights to save money and invest elsewhere since they have guys like LaLonde, Olsen and Leddy who are close to being NHL ready?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:31 PM)

Doubt it. If that was the case i think they would be saying we will address Seabrook after the season..i cant imagine they would string him along talking to his agent, etc. and then sever ties

Jason (Grayslake)

Speaking of Ladd, do the Hawks have the ability and/or would they take a chance on signing him to an offer sheet in the offseason to get him back?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:32 PM)

Hes captain there. They will lock him up almost for sure.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:35 PM)
