Chat with Nick Friedell

Nick Friedell
  (2:36 PM)

What's going on, everybody? I'm coming at you live from the United Center. Let's get the chat rolling ...

Mitch Condon (Chicago)

Hey Nick, D Rose has been absolutley incredible, yet other than chicago analyst and sports shows, I havnt heard anyone talk about him for MVP or even as one of the top players in the league, its crazy right? Whats going on?

Nick Friedell
  (2:39 PM)

I think Derrick is getting plenty of love nationally. I remember sitting on press row at Staples Center last month and having several national writers tell me they couldn't believe he was this good. I don't know if he'll win the MVP award this year, but it won't be for a lack of attention. He is one of the most popular players in the league right now.

Dave (Glendale Heights)

Hey Nick...the more I see Ronnie Brewer come off the bench, the more I think he really fits well as that "energy" guard coming off the bench. So, do you think the Bulls should still be looking for a more capable starting SG or do you think the routine of Bogans starting, but Brewer getting the lion's share of minutes is going to hold up all season?

Nick Friedell
  (2:42 PM)

If the Bulls truly want to contend for a title this year they will continue to look for another 2 guard. Brewer is playing much better, but the Bulls aren't going to win a title with Brewer, Bogans or Korver in the starting lineup. Having said that, I expect Brewer and Korver to continue to the big minutes for the time being.

Alex (Des Moines, IA)

Any chance the Bulls look into trading for Rip Hamilton? Wouldn't he fit well in the starting 2 spot?

Nick Friedell
  (2:44 PM)

No doubt the Bulls will see what it takes but I don't think Hamilton fits here. He's got a big contract and I don't think he is the player he used to be. Plus, I don't think he gets the Bulls over the top.

Charlie Cabret (San Juan, Puerto Rico)

Hello Nick. Hope all is good. What's your opinion on the Bulls looking for a new SG in the trade market? If you think they might, who would this SG may be? Jason Richardson and O.J Mayo come to mind.

Nick Friedell
  (2:46 PM)

Obviously, Melo would be the best player available. I think Mayo would be a solid fit as well, though. Same goes for Courtney Lee if the Bulls could pry him away from Houston. Both of those guys are younger and cheaper alternatives than a guy like Rip Hamilton. Melo is the only guy who get them closer to a title this year though.

Michael (Cincinnati)

Hey Nick, Bulls seem to be on the verge of breaking out. You think a win tonight could start something big??

Nick Friedell
  (2:48 PM)

I actually do think the Bulls will win tonight. I also think they will go on a tear here soon because the schedule eases up for them.

shawn (Atlanta GA.)

why not try and trade for a 3 who can create from the wing and make korver tha starting 2?

Nick Friedell
  (2:51 PM)

Korver may very well end up being the starting 2 guard later in the year, but his defense is still not at the level that Thibs would like it to be at. The only way you can trade for a 3 is if you get rid of Luol Deng's contract. Teams aren't lining up carry that on their books for the next three years.

Chris (Florida)

Why does Bogans still start? I understand the idea of having a veteran presence on the team but two of the things he was brought in for, defense and 3pt shooting, he has been poor and terrible at. Making your starting lineup weaker so that your bench is stronger seems counter productive to me.

Nick Friedell
  (2:52 PM)

This is the biggest question of the week. The answer is that Thibs just feels more comfortable to have Bogans in that spot. At this point, it doesn't matter as much as it did earlier in the season because Bogans rarely even plays down the stretch. Korver and Brewer have been getting all the minutes.

Chris (Chicago)

Nick, I know everyone is trying to play GM for this team but I want to hear your personal predictation to any moves GarPax might make before the deadline.

Nick Friedell
  (2:53 PM)

My guess, and that's all it is, is that GarPax trades for another 2 guard by the deadline.

alex (chicago)

why have we not seen more of the cj watson and derrick rose backcourt?

Nick Friedell
  (2:54 PM)

Thibs only likes to use that lineup when the Bulls are trailing and need a spark.

Chris (Holland, Michigan )

Hey Nick! I agree Melo gets you closer, but he is a three. You are going to have to give up Deng, Gibbson, and whoever to maybe get that achieved. How does Melo make us that much better? We need a two that will be able to defend and shoot the three. I don't know if there is anybody suited for that.

Nick Friedell
  (2:56 PM)

And this right here is the dilemma the Bulls are in at the moment ...

Andrew (Phoenix)

Why are the Bulls so bad at free throws this year?

Nick Friedell
  (3:00 PM)

Good question. They practice them constantly. I think it must be mental.

Stanley (Montreal)

Hi Nick, don't you think 'thib should see what JJ has, It's not like he's going to lose his jod if he gives him a chance

Nick Friedell
  (3:01 PM)

I think Thibs has seen enough of James Johnson. He'll put him in when the Bulls are down or need a spark, but I don't think Thibs believes Johnson can be a rotational player this year.

Jeff (Geneva)

I feel like the Bulls are a second tier team in the NBA still, given that they seem to compete with the upper tier teams for a period, but usually it ends up in a loss. Do you think with the current roster they can make that leap into the upper tier, or will they have to change things around?

Nick Friedell
  (3:05 PM)

Any team with Rose on it will always be a threat. The problem for the Bulls is that I'm not sure there's a move out there at the moment which gets them past Boston or Orlando this year. Let's just say the Nuggets will accept Deng, Gibson and two first round picks for Melo. Does a team with Melo, Rose, Boozer and Noah get you past Orlando or Boston in the East? I don't think it would this year, but maybe in a year or two. What do you guys think?

Justin (Chicago)

I bought your comment about the Bulls being a 2 guard away at the beginning of the season. Before Rose started hitting his 3s at a 36% clip and before he showed the ability to average upper 20s on the season. I don't know if Mayo gets you over the top, but the addition of a player like Mayo would probably land the Bulls as 1A in the East. I think you almost undervalue Rose's abilities and how much flexibility it gives the Bulls at the 2.

Nick Friedell
  (3:08 PM)

Depending on what they have to give up to get Mayo, you may be right. But even then, I think they will struggle in a seven game series against Boston or Orlando this year.

Jim (LaJolla)

I feel like this years Bulls team is focused solely on winning, do you think the summertime free agency debacle motivated them?

Nick Friedell
  (3:09 PM)

No doubt it did. I think Rose and Noah were genuinely surprised that LeBron didn't come to Chicago. I think it made them work that much harder in the off-season to prove everyone wrong.

Tony (Peru, IL )

I know it's early, but I get scared - Do you possibly seeing something happen in Chicago with Rose like it happened in Cleveland when the time comes for a new contract? I couldn't possibly see losing our hometown man to another team and keep going 41-41? Please assure me Derrick loves Chicago and no where else.

Nick Friedell
  (3:11 PM)

Rose isn't going anywhere. He doesn't want to play anywhere else.

Nick Friedell
  (3:12 PM)

All right, guys. I am out of here. Enjoy the game tonight. Come down to press row and say hi if you get a chance. Talk to you next week.
