Chat with Bruce Feldman

  (2:05 PM)

Thanks for dropping by as we get set for Heisman weekend with lots of coaching gossip swirling.. let's get to it.

RSTJ (Nashville)

Hey Bruce, I asked during the middle of the season which you'd rather have Denard or T-Magic as your QB moving forward. If I remember correctly, you gave the slight edge to Denard. Now, with a full season behind them, has your opinion changed?

  (2:07 PM)

No, I'd still prefer Robinson.

Julian (Walnut Creek, CA)

Hi Bruce, do you think the media is letting Cam Newton off the hook a little bit regarding the pay-for-pay scheme. It seems like they are treating this with kid gloves. I mean, you don't have to grill the guy like a presidential candidate, but a single ESPN interview and that's it, nobody else asks any questions?

  (2:10 PM)

You can ask the questions, but all he can do is answer them however he chooses. It's not like the media hasn't chased this story really hard. Ask a lot of people and they'd say they media went overboard in how it went after it.

Donnell (New Orleans)

Bruce, just how good is Patrick Peterson and has there anyone in college football been this good at CB since Charles Woodson! Is he automatically a top 5 pick to you!

  (2:11 PM)

I think he's superb. What Eric Berry was for safeties last year I think Peterson is to CBs. The guy is a 6-1, 220-pound corner who is cat quick and has spectacular speed.

  (2:11 PM)

And he's really sharp and he's competitive.

Chester Copperpot (Miami, FL)

You tweeted that Bo Pelini is "out of the mix" in Miami. Is your tweet based on the statements from Pelini/Osborne? Or do you have separate confirmation?

  (2:12 PM)

That and heard from close to the UM search who texted early this morning that he was "out" of the search.

Adam (Philly)

Who's the next OC at Oklahoma? Texas?

  (2:13 PM)

Safe guesses: Major at UT and Norvell with OU since he has called plays before and Josh Heupel hasn't.

David (Florida)

Hey Bruce, just wondering about your take, who gets a coach first Miami or Florida?

  (2:14 PM)

Miami had a 10-day head start, I suspect they would hire someone first.

Sharvan (Gainesville, FL)

Hello Bruce, do you think Boise's Chris Peterson would be a great fit with Florida Gators? Thanks. Go Gators

  (2:15 PM)

I don't know. These are all more crapshoots than people like to admit... Also, the last few coaches who have left Boise have not done well in their next stops. Coach Petersen reminded me of that a while back when I asked him about leaving Boise.

HeHateMe (Jacksonville, Florida)

Whoever your close source is at UM, go ahead and text him back that no one in Miami will be happy if they get Edsall.

  (2:15 PM)

Brad (Boston)

Am I wrong to think that Randy Edsall is the only coach who actually wants the Miami job? I think it's inevitable that Miami will hire Edsall.

  (2:18 PM)

Yes, you'd be wrong. Tuberville really wants the job according to people close to him. I think Kevin Sumlin is very interested and I know Rob Chudzinski wants it. But I know Edsall is viewed favorably.

Eric (Iowa)

What team had the most disappointing year? My vote is Iowa, who didn't live up to any hype quite frankly.

  (2:19 PM)

Texas although Miami and FSU are also on that list along with Iowa.

Matt (Huntsville)

Who is your surprise team of the year?

  (2:20 PM)

Auburn has to be on top of the list considering all of the ranked teams the Tigers beat.

Jessica Liao (Los Angeles, CA)

Do you think Urban Meyer would have resigned if he had Cameron Newton leading the undefeated Gators to Glendale, AZ?

  (2:22 PM)

I don't know how a coach would resign leading up to a national title game. Winning changes a lot of things. It wouldn't address the reasons Meyer gave for stepping down though. But losing or disappointment adds to a lot of frustration and doubt.

Vincent (ATL)

Which bowls intrigue you the most besides the BCS games?

  (2:23 PM)

Actually this is the first question in today's mailbag. I went with the Cap 1 bowl (MSU-Bama) and two others.

eloy (miami,fl)

can you see chris petersen heading to miami?

  (2:24 PM)

That would really surprise me because he seems very comfortable up in Boise and Miami is about as different from that as you could get. I don't see him making that kind of leap. It would go against everything he's ever said about coaching jobs.

Vincent (ATL)

Last year we had conference expansion to talk about during the off season. What will we talk about this off season? I hope its not the police blotter.

  (2:25 PM)

Sad to say it's almost always the police blotter as a constant theme.

Russell (DC)

Does the Heisman go to the best player on the best team, or the best player in College Football?

  (2:26 PM)

Usually the former, but in this case I just think it's going to the most outstanding player in the country.

Kai (Shanghai)

VT seems to have a real weak recruiting class for 2011. Are there any likey signees that will help the Hokies? As of now they only have 2 4 star recruits.

  (2:28 PM)

Recruiting rankings around VT classes I would take with even more grains of salt than usually. Almost every year their recruits are underranked. DT Kris Harley is a guy who is relentless and sounds like will be tough to keep off the field

Cameron Newton (Auburn, AL)

Should I leave early for the NFL Draft or make history?

  (2:28 PM)

You're making history stay or go by winning the Heisman tomorrow.

David (Ft.L )

What are the chances Tuberville heads to Miami. Lots of conflicting reports out there.

  (2:30 PM)

I've heard that he has a shot, but isn't the leading candidate from UM source. He is about as safe a choice as I think they have because of his experience. I'll say 40 percent chance.

Todd (AA)

No Michigan questions yet? Who is our coach next year? Wouldn't Harbaugh be better off staying at Stanford or going to Michigan, in the NFL even the best coaches get fired after around 10 years. He could stay in AA for 25 years.

  (2:31 PM)

Had heard he's always been intrigued by the NFL, but would returning to the alma mater be his ideal. He has more options than probably any D1 coach out there because he has an NFL ready system, his age, his background... Just a hunch, but I'd be surprised if he's back at Stanford for the 2011 season.

James (Miami)

Who do you feel would be the best hire for Miami?

  (2:33 PM)

My guess of the guys I've heard who are legit candidates that are being considered I'll say Kevin Sumlin. I think he would be a good fit there.

Rich Rodriguez (Ann Arbor, Michigan)

Should I be applying for Miami, Florida and other openings?

  (2:35 PM)

I know this isn't the area Rodriguez aspires to for next season or the next few seasons, but I think he would be great on TV as an analyst. I'm not saying he's getting fired for sure, but he's folksy, very analytical, can be self-effacing (on a level you seldom see from head coaches) and is quick on his feet.

Gene Chizik (Auburn, AL)

Am I more of a good luck charm than a good coach? Auburn in 2004, Texas in 2005, & Auburn in 2010.

  (2:36 PM)

Most underrated aspect of Chizik and that staff: the adjustments they've made in the second half of games. That stuff and the resiliency of their team isn't any accident.

Lisa (Washington)

Do you see any more HC vacancies for the SEC besides Vandy and FLA? Does Gus Malzahn stay or go?

  (2:37 PM)

Depends who UF hires? If it goes for Mullen then obviously MSU is open. If it goes Petrino then Ark is open.

Chad (Lubbock)

Is Mike Leach a candidate for Miami?

  (2:38 PM)

No, I was told by a UM source they were not going to speak to him.

J.B. (PA)

Bruce: With the Pitt job now open can you see either Tom Bradley or Al Golden taking it? If that happens, can you see Golden using the Pitt job as a stop over on his way back to Happy Valley?

  (2:40 PM)

I think both should be in play there. also heard Marty Morniihweg may be considered. Mark Stoops is another guy they might talk to.

Kevin (Texas)

If Tuberville leaves who would Tech target as a replacement... Mike Leach anyone?

  (2:40 PM)

I suspect they'd pursue Art Briles. If they couldn't get him, I think they'd end up with Sonny Dykes.

Butch Davis (Chapel Hill, NC)

Why am I not considered for the Miami Hurricanes head coach job?

  (2:42 PM)

So much turmoil around the UNC program with those investigations. Having Blake as his top assistant proved to be a big problem.

Matt (Los Angeles)

Bruce, Pac-10 went 2-5 in bowl games last year. Could very well go 0-4 this year. Do you think they'll step it up and win at least one or both of the big ones?

  (2:45 PM)

Their best bets I think would be Stanford vs. VT (although the Harbaugh coaching rumors won't help) and Oregon vs. Auburn. I think they'll go 1-3.

Kyle Whittingham (Utah)

Where do I end up now or in the future?

  (2:46 PM)

I don't know. If someone hires you, I think they're going to be happy and their fans should be too.

Jon Gruden (ESPN)

Should I consider taking any HC gigs? I kinda love my current job...

  (2:48 PM)

Not sure. I do know all of that time you've spent with Chip Kelly and Urban Meyer and studying college offenses is tempted to see how you could implement it all on your own. But there are a lot of unseen headaches that you have to deal with in college that you don't have on your plate in the NFL like the 20-hr rule; recruiting; the academics part, boosters.

Tom (NJ)

Any word on Floyd/Rudolph's draft status? Id prefer Floyd over Rudolph,Tyler Eifert did well replacing Kyle. What record do you see ND with if one/both/none return for 2011?

  (2:50 PM)

Nothing from anyone realiable. Only speculation. I think ND will continue to improve under the new staff. Year 2 for Dayne Crist with Kelly will help and he should blossom. There's some good young skill talent there in place... although there should be.

Steve (The Farm)

I'm getting ahead of things, but if Harbaugh bolts (to the Bolts perhaps??), where would Stanford look for a coach?

  (2:52 PM)

Someone just asked a Stanford question.. can't find it though.. Anyhow, it was about who I thought would be the next coach there. I think it'd be David Shaw the OC there. I've heard a lot of high up people really like him there.

Gus Malzahn (Auburn, AL)

Should I stay or should I go now

  (2:53 PM)

Tough call. Got more complicated when Urban stepped down because that means some other jobs Malzahn could get might be in play. More on this in today's mailblog.

Tom (NJ)

You see Dayne gettin the starting job back? I don't. He'll be way behind the curve in development learning Kelly's spread. Hendrix is a good best, along with their new commit Golson. That kid seems talented.

  (2:55 PM)

I do. I'll be surprised if Crist doesn't end up a star at ND before he leaves there. I do like little Golson though. Saw him at Elite 11. He's got a nice arm and good feet, but he is small. Heard he's a very good basketball player too.

Bryan (Springdale)

If Petrino is offered and leaves for Florida, is he villified in the media? If so, I don't blame the media.

  (3:00 PM)

I'm not sure you can get much more villified than he was a few years ago. And I've hear from a coach close to him that he could care less what people think.

  (3:00 PM)

sorry got a call...

Brandon (The Field)

OSU-ARK Predictions and how petrino is distracted.

  (3:01 PM)

Holding off on bowl picks for another week.

Mike (SC)

Will Miami consider Chud or not? have not heard his name at all.

  (3:02 PM)

I know he has made it know he wants that job, but not sure how receptive Hocutt is to him. It's hard to hire another guy who has never been a head coach after the last two hires were coaches who had never been HCs.

Chris (Lake Charles)

Ole Miss 2011 - Over/Under 7 wins?

  (3:04 PM)

Not sure.. havent seen the schedule. The O-line should be improved. The D-line even if Kentrell Lockett comes back probably won't be because you lose so much in the middle. Not sure how good Nathan Stanley the QB is either.

Rob (Idaho Falls)

A Florida blog says that Chris Petersen is going to Florida, any truth to the rumor?

  (3:05 PM)

It wouldn't surprise me if UF reached out to see if he's interested. But not sure if, like I said before, he wants to make that big of a lifestyle change. (NY, NY)

What are your thoughts on a college football playoff?

  (3:08 PM)

I'd like to see it, but no more than an eight-team playoff. Top eight teams not six AQs plus two more. There is no perfect system though. Always going to be people upset. I don't want a 16-team playoff because having three and four-loss teams in the mix does de-value the regular season. The pressure to not lose does impact the drama around the regular season.

Drofdarb (Boise, ID)

Bruce, Isn't it funny how fans from AQ conferences continually bash Boise State yet when their team has a coaching vacancy they're clamoring for Chris Petersen?

  (3:09 PM)

Good point.

  (3:09 PM)

Three more questions...

Alex (Los Angeles)

How long Kiffin has at USC?

  (3:12 PM)

I'd say four years unless something major happens off the field. Taking over a program that just got hit with major sanctions isn't an easy transition.

Lawrence (La Crescenta, CA)

Your favorite bowl? Your favorite bowl trophy?

  (3:12 PM)

Love the Rose Bowl. It's a spectacular setting with great tradition... Not sure on the trophy part.

Henry (Columbus)

De-value regular season? Not if you use the 11 conference champs (which will place more value on the regular season) and 5 wild cards (which will have between 1-2 losses). I thought you were better than that Bruce.

  (3:14 PM)

I wouldn't want the conf champs in it per se. UConn goes 8-4 and loses by two TDs to a Temple team with the same record and gets to play for the title? No thanks. .. My opinion was the top eight. If you don't make that, you don't make it.

  (3:15 PM)

Thanks for the questions... check out the FCS game tonight between Chip Kelly's old school, UNH and Delaware with former Penn State QB Pat Devlin on ESPN2.
