Chat with Calvin Watkins

Calvin Watkins
  (2:39 PM)

Let's get to it.

Scott (Gallup, NM)

Hey Calvin,I have the Cowboys as being officially eliminated from playoff contention at this point. Falcons, Saints, Chicago, Packers all have better records than we can achieve, or hold the head to head tie breaker over us(Packers, Bears). The Eagles and Giants play each other, so one of them gets to 9 wins. NFC West gets to enter their division champ into the playoffs, too. That's 6 already. See any flaws in my thinking?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:40 PM)

Cowboys are not making the playoffs. Now say for instance they beat the Eagles twice and finish 8-8. Say the Cowboys finish with the same record as the Green Bay Packers. Cowboys stay home because the Packers beat them.

Billy (Seattle)

So what are the chances of Choice taking Barbers spot on the roster for the rest of the season?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:44 PM)

I would say pretty good, but Barber is a proud guy and he's going to try and return this week. Choice deserves more carries, I've said that all along, but the team wants to keep Barber as the starter because they believe he's better. The reality is Choice and Felix Jones are a better duo than Jones and Barber. Going forward I think Barber will not be here.

Shawn (Ashe County, NC)

Calvin, thanks in advance for your answer. Q: Do you think that Roy Williams will be a Cowboy next year? He has shown his value this year and he would make a good insurance police foy Dez.

Calvin Watkins
  (2:45 PM)

No, I don't think so. Williams has played pretty consistent during the year, but Dez Bryant's development and the confidence the team has in Kevin Ogletree might push Williams out. Williams wants to stay, but I do believe he will play elsewhere next year.

The Steve O Show (Big D)

Do you think young guys like Sam Young and Barry Church have a shot taking the starting spot at their respective positions?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:46 PM)

I would like to see Sam Young play some at right tackle and maybe Barry Church see a few snaps at safety in the next few weeks. It might not happen as long as the team continues to win. I would suspect Young will get a chance to win the starting job in 2011.

Jason ((Boston, MA))

Hi Calvin. I've tried for a while to get something posted but it hasn't worked. Hopefully it will this time. Anyway, do you think the cowboys win was considered "lucky" yesterday, or did they play well?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:47 PM)

Cowboys played well yesterday, despite blowing a 17 point lead. Dallas showed a lot heart in coming back, but the bottom line is this is a 8-8 team, or a team headed in that direction. If the Cowboys finish 6-10 do you think that's what they are? I'd say the Cowboys are a 10 to 11 win team that badly underachieved.

Dave (Saskatoon)

Hi Calvin. I realize Owusu-Ansah is on the IR list, and nobody has seen him play in a month or so. What do you, and the Cowboys coaches, think about his long term potential? Can he make a serious contribution as a safety next year?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:50 PM)

AOA's injury opened the door for Bryan McCann to become the kick returner for 2011. Now AOA has to show he can play in the secondary next year. AOA was a safety in college and now he's going to play corner so it will be a nice little battle.

Mike (Dallas, TX)

Now that Dez Bryant is done for the season, will Ogletree get a chance to show that he can be the 3rd WR next season or will Sam Hurd get those snaps?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:54 PM)

Mike, it would be nice to see Ogletree get some more snaps with the offense now that Bryant is out of the lineup for the year. Ogletree has good speed and has improved in his route running. he struggled during training camp and that bothered the Cowboys. Recently, Jason Garrett said Ogletree has improved as a wide receiver.

Ramin Assar (Chantilly VA)

What other members of the coaching staff could possibly be let go at seasons end? I think the O line coach, secodary coach, and possibly defensive coordinator need to be upgraded.

Calvin Watkins
  (2:55 PM)

Most of the coaching staff is under contract for 2011 for the exception of Ray Sherman, who is up after this season. It will be interesting to see who returns from the coaching staff.

Ramin Assar (Chantilly VA)

Do you think that there is a chance that Joe DeCamillis is fired at season end? His special teams have been a major problem in close games because of blocked punts, kickoffs kicked out of bounds, and kicks returned for touchdowns. Also he has failed in developing Buehler. I understand that he is a Jones family favorite, but to me he has got to go.

Calvin Watkins
  (2:56 PM)

The problem with Joe DeCamillis unit is young players. His scheme is fine, but when you lose some key veteran players on special teams, things tend to go haywire which was the case at times. The last two weeks, the coverage has gotten better, there are some issues, this has been a bad year for special teams across the league, but I don't believe DeCamillis is the problem here.

Gregg (Houston, TX)

What is wrong with Anthony Spencer? He seemed to always be around the play last season but this year he's been a ghost. Is Victor Butler going to push for Spencer's starting job or playing time down the road?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:58 PM)

I'm surprised Spencer hasn't played well. He's having a down year and with Ware getting double-teams, it's interesting that Spencer is not getting to the quarterback. Spencer is healthy, but I think his technique is bad at times and the quarterbacks are getting rid of the ball faster than last year.

Chris (Holmdel, NJ)

With Dez out for the year, who moves up to 3rd WR, Hurd or Ogletree?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:59 PM)

Here's the depth chart: 1. Austin, 2. Williams, 3. Hurd, 4. Ogletree.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Will The Dallas Cowboys finish the season with a 6-10 record?

Calvin Watkins
  (2:59 PM)

So, I guess you're saying the Cowboys will lose both games to the Eagles and win the rest? I think they have three more losses on their schedule, two to the Eagles and one to the Redskins.

bryan midland, mi [via mobile]

Do you see jerry jones ever stepping down as gm, like it was with jimmie johnson?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:00 PM)

Jerry Jones will not step down as general manager. He believes if the coach goes to one person for the decisions it eliminates potential problems.

matt carter (sc) [via mobile]

Do u thing choice should be the starter? And how do u feel about the safty play latley?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:02 PM)

No, keep Felix Jones as the starter and with Barber nicked up, it's time to give Choice some carries. He rushed for 100 yards yesterday and that was a positive for him. The safety play was better last year and has struggled this year. But in the last three weeks Ball and Sensabaugh have done a great job.

Gary (Los Feliz)

With Garrett getting bailed out again, do you think Jeff Fisher has a shot at being the new coach if he becomes free? Thanks C!

Calvin Watkins
  (3:03 PM)

No. If Garrett keeps the team going in the right direction, he will get the job long-term. If Fisher gets free, then yeah, I can see Jerry talking to him. But this is Garrett's job to lose.

Squall (Balamb Garden)

Before Wade was fired, we heard a lot that the 'Boys should be running the ball more. Since Garrett took over, they've opened up the running game with great success. Any chance Garrett was intentionally holding the offense back till Phillips got fired so they could look way better when he took over?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:06 PM)

I don't believe Garrett decided not to run the ball on purpose. The Cowboys were behind several games earlier in the season and Garrett elected to pass a whole lot. Of late, well since Garrett took over, the run game has done a much better job. Garrett once told me he wants to run the ball, but if the line is inconsistent and the running backs are struggling, he won't run on a regular basis.

steve (fort worth)

what are the odds of Jerry drafting the kicker from the cornhuskers

Calvin Watkins
  (3:06 PM)

No drafting the kickers. Jerry needs to take care of the offensive line, safety, cornerback, defensive line and quarterback in the draft.

Shawn (Ashe County, NC)

Will Jenkins be a cowboy next year?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:07 PM)

Yes, no question. He has not played that well, but I still think there's hope for him long-term.

Squall (Balamb Garden)

How could you possibly see the Cowboys losing to the Redskins, the way both teams are playing right now? o_O

Calvin Watkins
  (3:08 PM)

It's the NFL, anything can happen.

Josh (PA)

With an early pick (top 12 or so at best), what do you see them targeting considering Kiper doesn't have a lineman that early? Trade down or best available like the last couple years?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:09 PM)

Josh, you might hate me by saying this, but draft the best player available. The Cowboys did it in the first two rounds of the draft last year in Bryant and Lee. Now, this spring you have some major needs on the offensive line and secondary. You must take care of those areas in the first two rounds.

Josh (PA)

As a PSU fan it was nice to see Lee succeed. Do the Cowboys believe Lee can be an answer to the ILB problem we will have shortly after Brooking goes? Can Lee stay healthy?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:10 PM)

Lee has a future here as an inside linebacker, but he will get his chance to start next year, just not now.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:10 PM)

Guys, thank you for joining me. Take care.
