Fantasy Injuries w/Stephania Bell

Stephania Bell
  (3:04 PM)

Good afternoon Sports Nation. How is everyone after the first round of playoffs? I'm in a two week aggregate round - so my loss isn't a REAL loss yet, and our scores were only off by three points...so I consider it a tie heading into this week. Now I have to figure out who's going to show up...

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

With Brett Favre out for Monday's Game against the New York Giants with a Shoulder Injury do you think that will be it for the rest of career?

Stephania Bell
  (3:07 PM)

Chris: Too soon to know - I do think that the team and Favre himself want to avoid the weekly speculation about whether he will or won't go. But I think the most interesting part of the story is that it's actually the numbness in Favre's hand which is resulting from a pinched nerve in his neck suffered a couple weeks ago that is the big issue. The SC sprain may have set him back, but had that occurred in isolation, it looks like maybe he might have been able to plug through it. He's reportedly having tests today -so let's see what happens.

Angelica (San Mateo, CA)

Hi Stephania. Nice win by our 49ers. How serious is injury to Steve Smith (ny)? Thank you.

Stephania Bell
  (3:08 PM)

Angelica: Can you believe they're still in contention for NFC West? Bizarre. Steve Smith injured his hamstring on his first catch back from a chest injury. Not what he had hoped for - and looks like he'll be out at least this week.

Jason (NY)

Stephania I have to get this in early because I have a meeting during your chat. Any word on Desean Jackson? Please tell me he will play after limping half the game on Sunday.

Stephania Bell
  (3:08 PM)

Jason: Thanks for posting early. Early word on DJax is that the ankle will be fine.

Jon (New York, New York)

Do you think Aaron Rodgers plays sunday?

Stephania Bell
  (3:10 PM)

Jon: Way too early to know. These concussion tests are a one-day-at-a-time recovery assessments. Might get a better idea by Weds as to how he's feeling, but each day even if he increases his activity they have to see how he responds to that. May not know for sure until Sunday. And this is his second one of the year. Everyone will be cautious.

Drew (NY)

What is Ivory's status for this sunday. and do u think PT Cruiser cuts into his time enough to bench him

Stephania Bell
  (3:11 PM)

Drew: All we know right now is that he was forced out with a hamstring injury. And he had a history of them in college. The severity is not really known. Obviously P Thomas value goes up if Ivory is out with injury -but they still have a tough matchup this week...

Brian (Austin)

Happy Holidays Steffi! It's a crucial playoff week coming up. Any chance I'll be able to put Todd Heap back into my lineup?

Stephania Bell
  (3:12 PM)

Brian: WIth them playing Monday night, we won't see guys practicing until Weds so won't know what Heap can do until then. He sounded like it was a pretty serious injury - so I'd plan on insurance regardless.

Jordan (Boston MA)

How did Owen Daniels look to you last night? Does he finally seem ready to be involved in this offense again?

Stephania Bell
  (3:13 PM)

Jordan: Other than a big drop, thought he looked good. Played pretty physical and I thought it was the best he'd looked in a long time. Have to think it's more Daniels going forward.

Dave (New York, NY)

I have Rodgers and Cassel. Do I need a 3rd QB?

Stephania Bell
  (3:14 PM)

Dave: Yes. Even though Cassel says he's preparing to play, get one just in case. He still has to prove he can physically progress through the week to get clearance.

Wayne (New England)

Were there any reports regarding Vincent Jackson's calf injury? I know it was his first game back and they got him involved early with the end around, but can I feel safe that his injury won't hold him back on Thursday night against the 49ers on a short week?

Stephania Bell
  (3:19 PM)

Wayne: Only that it looks as if he made it through without incident and appears likely to play Thursday. Naturally the short week is a bit of a concern, given that he's just returned from the injury -but more from the question perspective of will he last than from the standpoint of him feeling worse after last game. Yes, some risk - but consider your options. If he's the best of what you've got, then might have to go for it.

Mike (Danbury, CT)

Im posting early so that I can come back to check later, but please touch on Bradshaw's wrist during the chat, Thanks!!!

Stephania Bell
  (3:20 PM)

Mike: There hasn't been much detail but all accounts are that it's not serious...so expect a week like last. Maybe a day off of practice or so, but expect him to play.

Dan (NYC)

Congrats on the NPR apearance, Stephania. Don't let Berry give you a hard time about. I'm in the conference championship and need a win to get to the finals. Is Zak Miller safe to add as insurance for Antonio Gates?

Stephania Bell
  (3:22 PM)

Dan: Thanks for the support...I wouldn't be adding Miller as my insurance. He's dealing with a less than healthy foot too. I'd be looking elsewhere for a tight end - there are several available out there, including Pettigrew (and many people dropped Owen Daniels) and I'd start there.

Joe (Princeton)

How is Tamme doing this week? I am still in a toss up whether to start him or Vernon Davis at TE for Week 15.

Stephania Bell
  (3:24 PM)

Joe: We haven't heard much - and the Colts are usually silent until Weds. There was no word that he got worse after last week's game but he sure didn't do much. Now that A Smith is back you know he'll look for Davis. I still like Tamme better depending what he does in practice. If I assume he practices daily, he's my pick.

Eric (Indy)

With big QB questions, would you either start Britt or Sid Rice this week?

Stephania Bell
  (3:25 PM)

Eric: Britt - saw good flashes from him this week.

Jeff (Atlanta, GA)

Stephania, thanks for chatting with us fantasy football dorks again. Any fallout from the knee bump incident last night for Adrian Peterson? That didn't look good. He came back, but didn't seem 100%.

Stephania Bell
  (3:26 PM)

Jeff: Remember, I too am a fantasy dork. And proud of it. I didn't think AP looked so hot either but it may be attributable to the Giants' run D. They wanted to force T Jackson to throw the ball or try to make plays - which apparently was a good idea. I think he's fine going forward.

Steve (NC)

Would is your take on Manningham? Does this injury mean he is droppable? If Smith sits out then he should be in line for more work right?

Stephania Bell
  (3:28 PM)

Steve: We don't know how serious the hip flexor injury to Manningham is. Right now I'm saying that Nicks is the beneficiary of the injury to the other two. S Smith looks very likely to sit this week out; Manningham unknown.

Jason (SD)

Beanie beanie beanie !!??? Will Hightower carry me to the promise land???

Stephania Bell
  (3:29 PM)

Jason: Don't you have to go with Hightower? Beanie was getting ill in the second half, had the flu, so it wasn't his knee, but ultimately it was another non=productive game.

dave (home)

stephania,is it possible the chargers put gates on IR?

Stephania Bell
  (3:30 PM)

Dave: Possible, but not likely. I think he wants to give himself a chance to play each week and once he got reassurance that he was not making his foot overall significantly worse, he essentially said he will keep doing what he can to try to get back out there.

Dan (Chicago)

Stephania, as a trauma ICU RN, I can appreciate all of the medical knowledge you bring to us week in and week out; you do a great job! Now, I have been scrambling with my TE position all season and have made it to the semifinals. Who do you like better considering their injury history, Zach Miller or Owen Daniels? Thanks!!!

Stephania Bell
  (3:32 PM)

Dan: Thanks for the very nice comment. I go with Daniels - b/c he's on the upswing, has had lengthy rest and rehab (they pulled back on him after he had the first major setback)and Miller is not likely to see major improvement anytime soon.

Jeri (49r's fan also)

Stephania, I know your a die hard fan, whats your thoughts on Gore's injury coming back next year. Are these guys with hip issues prone to crack it again?

Stephania Bell
  (3:34 PM)

Jeri: Not the most common injury that Gore had. From a timing perspective, he has a lot of time for it to heal and to make sure he's had plenty of rest and reconditioning before he tests it again. So at this point, not especially worried.

Jack (Charlotte)

Big Ben seems pretty beaten up. Better to roll with Collins or CAmpbell or Garrard? Thanks

Stephania Bell
  (3:36 PM)

Jack: Reasonable question. I think Ben is definitely hurting. Hard to count him out but maybe not quite the playmaker with the foot/ankle business going on. Collins actually was quite the fantasy producer and could be again this week given the matchup. Garrard not a bad option either. Campbell too up and down for me.

ashley (cali)

Any word on BMW and Obomanu? In your opinion, who will be the most relevant during the playoffs?

Stephania Bell
  (3:37 PM)

Ashley: BMW is by far more valuable to me assuming he's on the field. Pete Carroll says he expects both receivers back Weds in practice so that's encouraging. And of the two, BMW will be the preferred Hasselbeck target.

Adam (IA)

Stephania, Megatron owner here, Drew Stanton scares me! any chance we will see Stafford back before end of Fantasy Playoffs?

Stephania Bell
  (3:38 PM)

Adam: No, no and no. Not until next year.

Rob (Jerz)

Whats the word with Austin Collie? I'm in the playoff with an injury riddled roster and need him back.

Stephania Bell
  (3:39 PM)

Rob: If you don't like uncertainty, then need to find another player. He has been on limited practice for a couple weeks but behind the scenes we don't know what specific things are holding him back. The Colts no doubt have reasons, you have to remember how bad that hit was that he took that left him with a concussion. Then he came back too soon -always a big fear.

Jake (Denver)

How did Torain hold up after that heavy workload?

Stephania Bell
  (3:40 PM)

Jake: So far, so good. Now the question is do you trust Mike Shanahan with three available running backs to actually feature the one guy? I suppose Torain is the front runner - but don't be totally surprised if it gets shaken up.

Steve (NC)

Were there any reports that Andre might have made his ankle any worse with last night's beast-like performance?

Stephania Bell
  (3:41 PM)

Steve: Nope - none that I'm aware of - and that final catch in the end zone was a pretty fine display of footwork.

Ghostrider (Miramar)

SB- Help me out with this one. Justin Morneau got a concussion the 1st week of July and never played another game. A Rodgers just got dinged up with his second since October and might play Sunday?

Stephania Bell
  (3:43 PM)

All I can tell you is that no two concussions are alike and that when anyone has residual symptoms he should not be playing any sport. Morneau continued to have issues with fogginess and headaches when he tried to take BP. He was clearly never ready to return to play.

Ryan (Germantown, MD)

Patrick Crayton?

Stephania Bell
  (3:45 PM)

Ryan: When the injury happened there were quick rumors by some that he was done for the year. But those close to the team never reported that and even said that he was likely to miss a few weeks, but left it pretty open after that. From the sounds of things, he's no lock to play again, and won't play this week, but there may be a possibility that he returns the following week or the week after.

Scott (The Christmas Tree Lot)

Its Freezing out here! Megatron Owner as well... What about Shaun Hill?

Stephania Bell
  (3:46 PM)

Scott: He's still not throwing a football so it's hard to imagine him out there anytime soon...

Stephania Bell
  (3:48 PM)

Here's some good news I just learned. Tight end Heath Miller has been cleared to return to practice Weds for the Steelers. If all goes well he could be available to play Sunday against the jets.

zeke (norwalk)

Tony Romo?

Stephania Bell
  (3:50 PM)

Zeke: Really, I don't see him playing again this year. He needs to be pain-free with regular throwing, then would need to return to practice. And there's the risk of contact. One big hit and a re-fracture and then what good did it do? I doubt we see him.

Samer (Austin, TX)

Any news on Addai?

Stephania Bell
  (3:52 PM)

Samer: Same story - participated in light Monday workout - but that's not saying much... the old one day at a time. Don't think anyone's hiding anything - just think it's the nature of the injury - and we're stuck with it. At this point, I wouldn't want to play him in his first game back anyway.

Riaz (Berea, OH)

Hi Stephania and Happy Holidays! Did Nicks suffer any setbacks yesterday? I need him Sunday!!

Stephania Bell
  (3:52 PM)

Riaz: Not from anything official that I've heard.

Alex (Boston)

Can't afford to lose any players to injury this week. Can you please post your roster, so I'll know who to bench?

Stephania Bell
  (3:53 PM)

Alex: I would - but I think everyone's already been injured at least once!!!

Jamie (Kinsley KS)

SB, Can you Help with the status of Sid Rice and Vincent Jackson also I have Bowe and was wondering if Cassel is going to play?

Stephania Bell
  (3:54 PM)

Jamie: Rice is fine - but their passing game was stinky in general yesterday. VJax I already talked about. I expect Cassel will play and Bowe will like that.

BG (Ohio)

Quickie? flex help - Choice, S. Johnson, Owen Daniels or J. James? Assuming Addai out - if not start Addai? thx

Stephania Bell
  (3:57 PM)

BG: THose are some nice flex options. I like Choice quite a bit but also S Johnson. I liked what I saw from Daniels this week but vs Tenn I don't feel as strong. And James too risky with the likely RB rotation. Prob I pick CHoice, then Johnson.

Lindsey (Chicago)

Will Pierre Thomas be fine this week to see more carries?

Stephania Bell
  (3:59 PM)

Lindsey: Thank you to your brother...and as far as Thomas, I expect if Ivory is fine, the carries stay about the same. But if Ivory is out, then yes, maybe more.

Otis (Pensacola, FL)

Roddy White keeps showing up on the injury report. How worries should I be about a last minute deactivation one week?

Stephania Bell
  (3:59 PM)

Otis: Nothing to worry about yet.

Stephania Bell
  (4:00 PM)

OK everyone - time for me to go. Thanks for coming and we'll see you here again Friday! Have a great week...
