Chat with Ivan Maisel

Buzzmaster
  (2:14 PM)

Ivan should be here in a few minutes everyone.

Ivan Maisel
  (2:17 PM)

Hi, everyone. Sorry I'm late. Thanks for waiting.

Brad (Bellaire, MI)

Ivan If you were Michigan A.D David Brandon what would you do with the Rich Rod situation?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:18 PM)

I wouldn't make a coaching change. The offense is doing well. The defense can be fixed. Why start over?

Jeff (Cedar Rapids)

What are your thought about the Iowa Hawkeyes and the player problems under Ferenz. Can he get this team focused and do we stand any chance of success next year with so many players leaving?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:20 PM)

I'm surprised, of course. Stunned, disappointed. I assume that Kirk can get it turned around. He has turned the program around twice already. I was struck by a story in the Madison paper earlier this week in the Badgers discussed how the 7-6 season two years ago spurred them on to win 21 games in the last two seasons. The Hawkeyes will be young next year. But maybe the young players who are returning will be spurred on by the embarrassing finish to this season.

Ivan Maisel
  (2:21 PM)

Man, that was a long answer.

Orville (Lubbock, TX)

Thank goodness for Buzzmaster. Ivan, he's your savior. If only he could teach you how to tell time.

Ivan Maisel
  (2:21 PM)

I had that one coming.

Mac (NC)

To the obvious -- what are your thoughts on the Big 10 logo and divisions?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:22 PM)

The logo is fine. It's not as clever as they think it is. But it's not offensive. It's not ugly. It just is. The names of the divisions are a huge disappointment. They chose buzzwords straight out of a focus group. The Big Ten deserves better.

Lou (Rockville, MD)

With Golden going to Miami, if PSU lets JoePa go one more year, do you think a) Golden would bolt for PSU or b) PSU told him they're going with Bradley or Larry Johnson?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:23 PM)

I feel certain that Penn State hasn't told Golden anything. I just don't think it works that way. I would assume that a year from now, if Penn State came to Golden, he would listen.

Brian (GSO)

I love the Muschamp hire but I don't understand going after Kirby Smart...shouldn't it be more important for Boom to hire a marquis OC than a well known DC?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:25 PM)

Muschamp and Smart are very good friends, and I believe they played together at Georgia. So it makes perfect sense for Muschamp to come after Smart. I don't know if it makes sense for Smart to leave. He already turned down returning to Georgia as DC. I thought that meant he would leave Alabama only as a head coach. This is a lateral move.

Chris (Greenville, SC)

Noles or Cocks?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:25 PM)

I think FSU will win because Ponder will be healthy.

James (CA)

If Rich Rodriguez doesn't get fired at Michigan, does that mean Harbaugh coaches at Stanford again next year?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:26 PM)

I think Harbaugh will leave Stanford for the NFL. And I think he knows he will never coach a better quarterback than he would have next year at Stanford. That's why I think he'll stay.

Ryan (Medford)

Ivan, Thanks for the insight to the BCS games. Does it seem to you that no one is giving Oregon a chance?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:27 PM)

We all have short memories. Auburn finished on the rise. Oregon did not. I think the five-week layoff wipes out that advantage, but that's the way most people think.

Chris (St. Pete)

Are you surprised UF didn't interview a black coach like Charlie Strong? Other schools have gotten a lot of grief over such a slight.

Ivan Maisel
  (2:28 PM)

I was surprised and I think Florida will be taken to task by the BCA over it. And I think Florida AD Jeremy Foley doesn't care.

Earl (West by God Virginia)

Ivan, like the Holgorsen hire to WVU?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:30 PM)

If it actually comes to fruition, yes. Very impressed.

Kenneth (AZ)

Does Muschamp's hiring by Florida hurt a sliding Texas team even more? Will UT be able to somewhat recover next year?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:32 PM)

I think it hurts Texas a lot. That means that Mack Brown is hiring two new coordinators in addition to an offensive line coach and another assistant. Brown is replacing the three most important assistants he has. Now, having said that, Brown will hire whomever he wants. He has those resources. But he must make the right choices.

Donald (Eugene)

So you don't think Harbaugh wants to stay at Stanford, have the pick of the litter of the finest student-athletes in the country and become the "Coach K" of college football? What would be better than that?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:32 PM)

I think Harbaugh is too ambitious for that.

Kathy (Nashville)

With the Irish expecting 19 starters back in 2011, is a BCS game a realisitc goal considering the schedule? ND only needs 2 more wins to be eligible.

Ivan Maisel
  (2:34 PM)

I like how ND finished the regular season. I think the Irish will be better next season. The regular-season ending game at Stanford is looking like a pretty good game, don't you think? As for the BCS, it's impossible to say. Depends on who the Irish lose to, what other teams do, etc.

Craig G. (Fairfield, California)

Hey Ivan, your podcasts with Geno and Beano are my favorite listens for the entire week. It'd be bad for your alma mater, but I want Jim Harbaugh for the 49ers. Thank you for your continually great insight.

Ivan Maisel
  (2:34 PM)

Thanks -- I think the 49ers would be tough for Harbaught to turn down.

Joe (Las Vegas)

Do you think that the NCAA should have a Rooney rule about interviewing minorities for ALL coaching positions? Do you think it would work?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:36 PM)

The big difference is that the NFL is one entity with one set of rules applying to 32 different businesses. The NCAA has more than 1000 schools, all governed by varying state laws regarding equal opportunity. I don't think the NCAA would do that. The BCA has made it voluntary, with embarrassment being the cost of not interviewing a minority candidate. I think that's worked pretty well.

Auburn Grad (Loretto, TN)

Should my relatives get an earful from me at the Christmas Party? They definitely had plenty of things to say before my team went up to Tuscaloosa this year.

Ivan Maisel
  (2:36 PM)

Rub it in. You deserve it.

Larry (Glendale, CA)

Do you think it is just a matter of time before Georgia hires Kirby Smart?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:38 PM)

I would be surprised if Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity hired Smart without him being a head coach somewhere first. I think McGarity would make a run at Mississippi State's Dan Mullen, with whom he worked at Florida. And I think Mark Richt is going to get it turned around at Georgia, anyway.

Neil (Vegas)

Which new conference are you most excited to watch next year: Pac 12 or Big Ten?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:39 PM)

I'm more excited to see the Big Ten, because I think Nebraska comes in at or near the top of that conference. I don't know that you can say the same about Utah and Colorado and the Pac-12.

George (Orlando)

Do you see significantly more conference realignment coming in the near future. With the trend to larger mega-conferences which conferences are doomed for extinction?

Chad (Las Vegas)

How smart was Gus Malzahn not to take the Vandy job? He could have gotten paid but that tenure would have been short at Vandy. He can wait another year or 2 and schools like LSU, UGA, So. Carolina will be available for him.

Ivan Maisel
  (2:41 PM)

Oops. Here's the answer to George's question. I didn't post it after I answered it: I think everyone will take their breath for a few years. The WAC is ailing badly. I don't know if it will survive or not.

Ivan Maisel
  (2:42 PM)

As for Malzahn and Vandy, I am excited to see Vandy willing to throw that much money at becoming competitive in the SEC. I understand that vice-provost David Williams wanted Maryland OC James Franklin all along, and that looks as if it's going to happen. Malzahn is banking on the possibility that he will have other opportunities. That seems like a pretty safe gamble.

Trey (Long Beach, CA)

How would you grade Lane Kiffin's 1st season at USC?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:44 PM)

B-plus. I think he got as much out of that team as anyone could have. They came very close to going 10-2. I think the lack of depth hurt at the end of the season.

Kris (Des Moines)

When exactly are yall going to learn there aren't many jobs out there better than OU and UF certainly isn't BETTER. Honestly how many times does Stoops have to pass before the worldwide leader gets it?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:45 PM)

No one wrote anything on ESPN.com that I'm aware of. We never heard anything indicating that Stoops was ever interested, or that Florida even contacted OU. I don't understand what you're talking about.

Collin (Oregon)

Ivan, who do you like in the Vegas Bowl and do you think it will be close?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:45 PM)

I like Boise State because I think they're better and because Utah quarterback Jordan Wynn is injured.

Chad (Las Vegas)

Ivan-If the lack of depth hurt USC this season what is it going to do to them the next 3 seasons?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:46 PM)

Really hurt.

Brian (GSO)

Which BCS and Non-BCS bowl are you most excited about watching this year?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:47 PM)

BCS bowls that I like: Championship Game, Rose and Orange.Non-BCS bowls that I like: Humanitarian, Las Vegas, Gator, Chick-fil-A, Alamo, Kraft Fight Hunger.

Harry (Seattle)

A playoff doesn't seem likely, but will we perhaps see a plus-1 model in the future?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:49 PM)

I covered a panel discussion in NY last week that featured five AQ commissioners. Judging by their comments, I don't think we're going to see a plus-one in 2014. That pushes it back, presumably, to 2018.

Bryan (Loretto, TN)

Did you see the 30 for 30 Pony Excess film? If so, do you think that's a pretty accurate portrayal of college football cheating in the 70s and 80s?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:50 PM)

I did not see it Saturday night because I covered the Heisman. I'm hoping to see it or DVR it tonight. Gene Wojciechowski, who worked for The Dallas Morning News back then, said it's very, very good, and not just because he got to see himself with hair.

Kris (Des Moines)

So it wasn't you that wrote OU was yet again lucky to retain Stoops? Like you can't understand why he is still in Norman?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:51 PM)

I didn't write that Stoops was lucky to retain Stoops. He was never in danger of leaving.

Bryan Boise (idaho)

What do you think the chances of any Boise State players are in the NFL???

Ivan Maisel
  (2:52 PM)

I think Winterswyk will do well. I think Young and Pettis will do well. And when I say that, I'm repeating what scouts have told me. I don't pay enough attention to the NFL or the Draft to give you an answer that means a whole lot. So, now, you're asking: why did I answer you question? I'm asking myself that, too.

Tim (ATL)

from a fan perspective - i think the now division names for the big-10 are terrible - what do you think? also, am i the only person in america that has a problem with the big-10 & big-12 being incorrectly named?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:53 PM)

I think the division names are terrible from any perspective. They are buzzwords, straight out of a focus group, as I've said all week. As for the Big Ten and the Big 12 being incorrectly named, that doesn't bother me. They have equity in those names and are reluctant to forfeit that equity.

Chris (Auburn)

Can, should, and will Cam Newton go to the NFL

Ivan Maisel
  (2:55 PM)

Yes, no, and yes. I'm always for quarterbacks staying in college. The studies have shown that QBs who exhaust their college eligibility have longer NFL careers than those who don't.

Parker (Austin)

True or False: Texas and Florida are the two best coaching jobs in the nation.

Ivan Maisel
  (2:55 PM)

True. Kids grow up in your backyard wanting to play for you.

Mike (Charlotte)

Ivan, who you got in the Sun Bowl...Catholics or Convicts?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:56 PM)

Mike, you evidently haven't heard: the '80s are over.

Percy (Portland, OR)

I can't help but compare the new Pac-12 to the new Big Ten, ie - logo, divisions, etc. Appears that the Pac-12 did a much better job rebranding than the Big Ten did?

Ivan Maisel
  (2:57 PM)

I agree. The Pac-12 did the smart thing and made its divisions geographical. The Big Ten can say that wouldn't have been competitively equal, but doing it the way they did it is confusing for the public.

Ivan Maisel
  (2:57 PM)

Thanks, guys. Near the top of the hour. Sorry I was late. Talk to you soon.
