Chat with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to yet another fantasy sports chat session, as we have one more game to go in Week 15! Hope you're still alive in your fantasy playoffs. So, looking at football and baseball questions today, so let's get it moving, shall we? Here we go!

Adam (MD)

how serious a situation is this Arian Foster thing? I know Stephania will get a lot of questions about it, but championship week/weeks are here and those of us Foster might be left high and dry. Is Ward a must have handcuff?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

Well, I have not heard anything in the past few hours, but it didn't seem to be an injury that would keep him out long-term, or even in Week 16. Foster can win the rushing title, I think he'll be out there this Sunday. That said, Derrick Ward is the obvious fill-in; get him even if you don't need him, just so your opponent cannot use him and beat you!

Dillon (Houston,TX)

Up by 13 and my opponent has AD playing tonight. What do you think his production will be tonight? and how much of an effect will Farve potentially playing have on his numbers?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

I'd be stunned if Favre plays tonight, but he's such an egomaniac, I suppose with him anything is possible. How presumptious to assume Joe Webb can't fill in ably... oh well. I don't think it matters all that much. It's not like Favre was playing well. He'd be such a live target for the Bears. At least Webb is mobile and can run. I think Peterson can get 75 yards and a score, or 13 or so points. Should be interesting no matter what!

Luke (Kansas City)

Up by 26 points, he's got AP and Longwell left tonight and I'm done, do I win for a trip to the Championship?!?!

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Your trip would seem likely, but anything is possible. The Bears defense did get destroyed last week, after all. I predicted a 20-10 Bears win in Pigskin Pick'em!

Doug (NY)

Tonight's game - field conditions, playoff implications, snow....what kind of game do you expect? I'm thinking lots of running and a boring second half, especially if the Bears start to pile up a lead - I think Minnesota packs it in. What are your thoughts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

I tend to agree. It would seem unlikely the Vikings will win, or score much, but then again look at the Packers last night against a tougher team. Who expected that from Matt Flynn? I'm gonna watch; snow games are awesome! I think the Bears win in a low-scoring affair, like 20-10 for example! Maybe a defensive TD in there.

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

Benji (Los Angeles, CA)

I need Forte to go off for 20 points tonite....wishful thinking?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

Probably. I need 19 from him in a league to advance. Forte has a pair of 30-point games this season, but nothing else over 15. I'd say 15 or so is around the limit, but here's to wishful thinking!

Kevin (Warren, PA)

Any news on the health of Austin Collie? More interested for him personnaly than my fantasy team. I hope they sit him rest of the year.

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

I am glad you posed your query the way you did. I would assume - hope, I suppose - Collie does not play again anytime soon. Maybe it's unlucky he continues to get concussed, or maybe he's more prone because he's a repeat concusser...or whatever. Point is I think the Colts have to do the right thing and let him recover for awhile.

matt (seattle)

What wide receivers would you prefer over Hakeem Nicks next year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Can't think of too many, to be honest. I'd think after a few obvious names like Andre Johnson, Roddy White and Reg Wayne, Nicks isn't far behind. He's going to be in my top 10, that's for sure.

jt (fla)

Tamme or Z. miller in finals? Tamme dropping off lately...

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

Not really. Wasn't Tamme targeted 7 times yesterday and he caught 7 passes? Seems pretty safe to me. Miller didn't do any better.

Brandon (Phoenix)

What is your opinion of Mike Tolbert next week against the Bengals. I figure the weather will be bad and therefore favor a bruising runner such as Tolbert. That may be wishful thinking seeing as how my opponent has Rivers and VJax.

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Haven't done Week 16 rankings yet - we gotta let Week 15 end first! - but I would think Tolbert is in my 20-25 range. He's splitting carries, and likely will no matter the weather, so let's not overrate that angle. Rivers can throw in wind, rain and snow. All QBs can.

Rick (Plainville CT)

Need Forte to get 100 rushing TD & 6 for 60 in the receiving game... Should I just go to bed early??

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Nah, I would stay up and yell at the TV until well past 11 p.m. ET. Maybe the TV will listen and the Minnesota front line, which stops the run, will fall down.

Aaron (Nashville )

You know what sucks? Having your wife join your fantasy league at work and make it to the finals, while you were eliminated in the first round of the fantasy playoffs. (Thanks for nothing Aaron Rodgers and AP)

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Been there, suffered that. Volek happens. Tebow happens. You know what happens.

Diego (Chicago)

Hey EK, I know you don't like to answer rankings questions on Monday, and "will I win" questions are lamer than kicker questions... so what kind of questions DO you prefer to answer today?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

How about baseball? Seriously, I don't mind whatever you've got for me. I mean, this is fun for me, even the angry, bitter people who think I am the reason Arian Foster tweaked a glute. I laugh. Send it all my way! I can't answer a ranking question when I honestly haven't thought about Week 16 though... will try though! How about GOOD questions!

Mark Beers (University Park, PA)

This is more of a rhetorical question but... how 'bout them Eagles!!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

Now that is a question I do like. I will say this, the end result was SO improbable, I haven't emailed or called ANY of my Giants fans to gloat. It's just too crazy what went down there. I do hope that poor punter keeps his job. Never root for people to lose employment.

Billy Volek (Obscurity)

Thanks for mentioning me!

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

I wrote about him in a blog today. I can't believe the Volek-Drew Bennett extravaganza was 6 years ago! Amazing! We're gettin' old... BTW, Volek is the Rivers backup in SD...

Ry (Eugene, OR)

You ready for Oregon to shock the world?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

I'm looking forward to the game, actually. It stinks we have to wait so long... I remember when the title games - all college FB - was decided by New Years Day, I think. I think Auburn might be better than a few NFL teams, by the way. Oregon too!

Gramps (Daytona Beach, Fla.)

The weather stinks, QB's are an issue, and injuries are a problem. I know your rankings, but what says your gut tonight, Forte or All Day

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

I stick with Peterson. Again, it's not like Forte is running on the Colts defense here. The Vikings defense can still play. Peterson gets 75 and a touch. Forte gets 70 total yards and his own touch.

Tim Tebow (Denver)

HEY! I did have a nice game yesterday! IF only our D show up!

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

I'm buying. I know I shouldn't overreact, but this isn't some seventh round pick. Tebow can play. I wouldn't activate him this week, but you can bet I do NOT want to see my Week 16 opponent have Tebow active. I will try to add Tebow, who plays Houston of all weak defenses, so my opponent can't use him to beat me.

Ben (Rochester)

Here's a GOOD question. Last Thursday I had a work holiday party and missed that Floyd was inactive. Needless to say Floyd gave me a goose-egg while Vjax sat on my bench! My opponent had Mike Vick and somehow I won, even though on Thursday I figured it was over. So, how the frig did I win?!

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

I was surprised as well that Floyd sat, and on one of the teams I oversee - not technically my team, but someone whose team I run - I missed it. Hey, don't ask why, you won. You won because Vick is fantasy's top player per game, easily.

Kerry Wood is Back! (Chicago)

BASEBALL!How is Cano not the #1 draft pick this year? He crushes all other 2B fantasy numbers... Pujols is Pujols, but the 1B point dropoff isn't nearly as steap, and can he really keep up with himself for another year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

Baseball!!!! You know, I thought about trying to make that exact case you just did. Cano is a monster. He's not the only 2B monster - Utley, Phillips, Kinsler have game - but first base is so deep, maybe the only deep offensive position ... I made Cano my No. 5 guy, but I really wouldn't laugh if you took Cano at No. 1. OK, how about 2?

Matt (Reston, VA)

That was a horrible question. Here is an actual question; is Ryan Torrain this years Arian Foster (gets a chance the last few weeks, impresses, and is a BEAST next year)?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Oooh, that IS an actual question! I would say Torain is one of those RBs that could absolutely be a 2011 beast, but aren't the Redskins just so messed up, so dysfunctional, anything goes? They'll have a new QB, one would assume. I'd keep Torain on that list of interesting deep keepers.

Scott (Chicago)

My opponent changed his TE during the final hour from Ben Watson to Brandon Pettigrew. Watson had 7 more pts. I won by 3. It's mostly luck my friends, and I'll take it.

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

I'll let you on a secret: Better to be lucky than good...

evan houston [via mobile]

Is vick the number 1 QB next year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

I think the case can easily be made, don't you? Has to be a first-round pick as well.

Travis (Omaha)

Love your work on Sunday mornings on the fantasy show, very helpful insights. I'm up by 22 and they have the Bears D...should I be worried?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Thanks Travis. That's not me, but I can sure pass your insights on to the other guy. Thanks for watching. I don't expect any D to ever get more than 20 points, but worry anyway!

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Thanks Travis. That's not me, but I can sure pass your insights on to the other guy. Thanks for watching. I don't expect any D to ever get more than 20 points, but worry anyway!

josh (ma)

how does the trade of grienke to the brewers affect his draft position. he a top 10 sp again?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

I ranked him right at No. 10. How about that coincidence! It's all in my Sunday blog about the trade. Odd trade. Royals will regret it, of course.

Eric (Atlanta)

I drafted Kolb and Roethlisberger-Vick was a must add. Sometimes luck starts in week 1.

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

I totally agree with that assessment. I didn't add Vick anywhere, mainly because all my QBs seemed safe and healthy and were Aaron Rodgers. Looks silly today, no?

Jack (Charlotte)

On the subject of luck...just a comment. Fantasy football has a huge luck component. Even experts are just guessing, and guys sometimes put up "monster" numbers and sonetimes "lay an egg". In the end, be a good sport and don't whine about how you got robbed and have the "best" team. It's at least 50% luck.

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

And there's Jack throwing in his two cents. I wouldn't say we're guessing. Mostly we can back it up. But to each his own...

Tom (Anaheim)

Does Schaub (vs Den) continues his dominance with 50+ passes and 300 yards in wk 16?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

How about Schaub and Tebow in a 35-34 game, with a combined 52 fantasy points for the QBs? Or not. But Schaub will definitely be in my top 10 this coming week.

Bluto (Faber College)

Hey EK, I loved your work in Animal House. Anyway, do Foster's nagging injuries have you questioning his durability at all for next year? Would you keep him over SJax or McCoy?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

Now that I actually WAS in! Fun movie... of course I wasn't in school yet... but whatever. No, I can't say I am concerned long-term about Foster. Don't all RBs deal with nagging stuff? This is the league's top rusher, and it's a good offensive team. I would keep Foster over both Jackson and McCoy at this point. I'm not real excited about Jackson as a keeper anymore. McCoy I would keep... close one I suppose.

Diego (Chicago)

EK - thanks for changing my oil last weekend! What's your take on J Stewart's last two weeks and has he done enough to compel his owners to start him despite a tough matchup @Pit?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

No, I think I was the one wiping the windshield, but thanks for the thought. I'd say Stewart can be trusted. The Carolina o-line is humming, like a well-OILED machine... (get it?). Even against Pitt, that could be a double digit fantasy day.

YD (West Chester, PA)

EK! Is it crazy to seriously consider keeping Hayward over A-Rod in a long-term keeper league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

Not crazy at all. A-Rod is clearly showing signs of aging. I will say 3B is not deep at all, even if A-Rod is not stealing bases or staying durable anymore. Heyward is gonna be a monster...soon.

Jason (Looking at the rules...)

Rules Interpretation: ESPN has a rule in regard to impeding other owners. How do you interpret that rule when it comes to "blocking" your opponent from getting a player by acquring that player even if you don't want to use them? Is "impeding" only valid if it is player cycling or if there is no additive benefit for the player making the move (such as a better matchup with their opponent)?

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

Well, I think the case can be made you're adding Tebow for potential use this weekend and next, and not technically blocking, but then again... maybe I should stop talking! If you're helping your team by adding someone, I don't see how it is against a rule.

Brian (Houston)

I don't have a question. I just want to say that I hate Cedric Benson, who I agreed with all the experts should be on the bench this past week.

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Now THAT is a good question ... or, um, comment. I did rank Benson as a near RB2, but I can't say I was excited about it. He can drive you nuts.

Eric (Cleveland)

From one Eric to another, is Felix Jones a solid RB2 this week against the Cardinals?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

No. I can't see any opponent making Felix a solid RB2. He's just not doing enough.

Austin (PA)

If anybody should hate a football player, we should all hate Randy Moss. What a waste of a 2nd round pick.

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Well, isn't hate a bit strong? It's just Randy being Randy. I'm sure we will have to deal with this guy next year. Randy that is, not Austin.

Matt (Pitt)

Does Hillis need to be benched vs Bal and Pitt?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

I don't think he'll be among my top 10 RBs in the rankings, but it should be close. Looks like he's tiring to me.

Concerned Commissioner (NJ)

Our regular season winner is having a meltdown as he is on the verge of getting knocked out of the playoffs. How do I talk him down from the ledge?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

Don't. Isn't it funnier this way? Why anyone would have a meltdown because they are losing a fantasy football match is .... well, maybe in this crowd I shouldn't finish my sentence. It's a game, people.

Snake Rogers (NV)

What are your thoughts on teams that aren't in the playoff race "shutting down" their studs to rest them right in the think of the fantasy championships?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

I don't like it one bit. All teams should try all the time, even if they are 4-10. Or do you mean NFL teams? I don't like that either!

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Jeremy Maclin is dead to me. Goes 1 catch 6yds and gets me eliminated from the playoffs week 14. This week he catches 2 tds.

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

Seek help, please. I don't think Jeremy was trying to hurt you specifically... but anything is possible.

Brett Favre (Minneapolis)

If I play tonight, will people respect me for playing even after the streak is over, or blame me for getting in the news again?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Oh, don't you worry Brett, EVERYONE respects you. You won a Supe and didn't miss a game for like 18 years. You're awesome. Don't play tonight. There's no logical reason to do so.

BRETT FARVE (MINNY )

ME ME ME

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

We know you're out there, Brett, we know... rest that shoulder. It's cold in Minneapolis! And Peppers is all amped up!

Ryan (PA)

Who would you keep at 2B, Kendrick or Weeks?

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

Probably Weeks. Who knows if he can stay healthy for 600 PA again, but then again, Kendrick isn't the picture of consistent health. At least Weeks put up numbers. Kendrick didn't.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

lol... good response. I meant Maclin is dead to me, as in I won't ever draft him again.

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

Much better. But even that seems a bit over the top. So, you're in the 20th round next year, and for some reason the other 11 teams all thought Maclin was gone but you know he's available... you're really going to avoid a top 20 WR in round 20 because he played well in Week 15 of 2010? I doubt that!

Jeff (Ann Arbor)

Philosophically, shouldn't leagues reward points champions something? I mean, you can argue that is really the best team. The big prize can go to the playoff champion but shouldn't the points championship come away with more than zero?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

One of my fave league is one in which ALL teams are head to head all season, no playoffs, just 17 weeks, a cross of roto and h2h... one winner, and it IS the best team. I had an unbeaten team lose yesterday to a No. 8 seed... I don't even bat an eye at this phenomenon anymore, it just happens every year. WE don't play...the players do.

Ryan (Germantown, MD)

Did NO run the ball at all yesterday? I had Reggie Bush and my opponent had Thomas. They combined for 5 points!

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Oh yeah, Reggie Bush was just awesome. Four carries, minus four yards. Sure, he's a running back. Saints should just give him a number in the 80s and see if he can be DeSean Jackson. And Thomas wasn't much better. They need Chris Ivory back. Unreal!

Chris (Boston)

Here's some advice, people. Stop drafting Reggie Bush.

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Yeah, and that too.

Adrian (Florida)

is it unsportsmanlike to pick up hot waiver wire pick ups just so your opponent can't get them

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

I hope you're joking. Please tell me you are.

Jake (Chicago)

Help! Sounds like an ideal situation, but who should I start in week 16, Rodgers or Vick?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

I can't see sitting Vick. For anyone. And I mean that. Every week he goes off. Every week. Rodgers should play, but I can't put him better than 3 or 4.

Kim Kardashian (The Limelight)

I dropped Reggie Bush...

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Well you must be a wise fantasy player then...

todd (philadelphia,pa)

your thoughts on rashaad jennings?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Seems like a decent enough fellow. Might be a 1,000-yard RB someday. Oh, and he's probably good for 5 or so fantasy points per week as long as MJD is upright. And the Jags can't lose any more games. MJD will play.

Lakis (Raleigh, NC)

I am up 3 points in my semi-final and I still have the Vikings D. Should I even risk playing them?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

(This should anger people quickly...) NO. Sit them. You won. Why risk it?

Chez Whiz (9th and Shunk)

BASEBALL......Can keep up to 5 keepers, anything less you get a pick in that round....Howard, Wainright, Crawford, ARod, Buster, Phillips, who's the odd man out??

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Well, if you go by the rankings, the one ranked the lowest is Buster Posey. Add the keeper part and the case can be made for A-Rod actually. I'd cut Posey.

High Scorer (Out of it again)

Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future returns...

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

I think I heard that line first in a Shakespeare play or something.

Cold Miser (Detroit, MI)

Anyone else lose b/c of Dan Carpenter's negative pts? This is a first for me...

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

I know people who did. And that is about the worst luck. He missed four difficult field goals. Missing a 22-yarder costs the same as missing a 62-yarder? Awful.

Joe (Decatur, GA)

I've never been in a league where the #1 team has won it all...

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

I have, but the bottom line is it's far better to be peaking in late-December, assuming you can get that far. And that's fantasy football...

Bad luck Bob (SF)

I lost on Cassel's kneel down to end the game. -0.1 point cost me!!!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

You truly are "Bad luck Bob"

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, I think we've had enough fun for one Monday afternoon discussing fantasy football. Thank you so much for the lively questions and for playing along. Best of luck tonight whether you have Favre or not... and good luck in your fantasy playoffs. And hey, remember to have some fun... Have a good one.
