Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks to our weekly chat. We're going today because of Christmas and there are no ESPN chats tomorrow. But we still have plenty to discuss. There's a new big notebook posted today and the news story and blog about Pacquiao-Mosley being made, plus new (and very updated) p4p rankings, divisional rankings and the schedule this week. So let's get to it.

Zim (Boston)

And the Pac-Mosley bashing begins in three....two....one.....go!

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

GO!!!!

Duff (Boston, MA)

Why is Derric Rossy fighting for the #1 rating in the IBF while Adamek and Peter are fighting for #2? What garbage rankings. If Rossy ever fought one of the Klitschkos it would be a beating unlike any ever seen.

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Agreed. It makes no sense. But it doesn't really matter. Adamek is already mandatory in the WBO anyway. He may get the title bout with Klitschko before ever completing two box-off fights anyway.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Why would HBO turn down a Cotto fight for $1.5M? Wasn't Cotto-Foreman the highest rated card on HBO last year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Cotto-Foreman was the highest rated boxing show of the year. I have no idea why they wouldn't make room for both fighters in a similar time frame, especially because Martinez does not even have an opponent yet. They should both be on HBO.

Bob (Lynchburg, VA)

Will Humberto Soto just wait and fight the winner of Rios-Acosta or will he take on a different fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

All up in the air. He's not going to be ready for a little while anyway.

Mark (NYC)

I would rather use $29.95 to fund an ad campaign calling for a Winky Wright-Sergio Mora fight than watch Evander Holyfield.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Have at it.

John (San Fran)

In all seriousness, does Bob Arum hate boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

No, he just loves money more.

Bryant Arnold (Detroit MI)

Now that we are set with the most meaningful fight of 2011, Bradley Alexander, would you rank the winner in the p4p rankings 3 or 4. And if a fighter is not fighting like a Mayweather can he fall in the rankings?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

It totally depends on how the fight goes. Bradley is in the top 10 already. Have to wait and see how things go.

Anthony (Cincinnati)

I heard all of this complaining over Margarito; and everyone bought the fight. I didn't. If we really want to see good fights, we should only buy good fights. If Pacquiao can do a million against anyone, then why should he fight anyone? Freaks, don't buy the Manny-Shane fight. I promise you, it will get replayed.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

When they made Margarito people were upset because of the fact that Margarito was a cheater and didn't deserve the fight. But most people figured it would be a solid fight in the ring and that at the time there was no other obvious opponent available for him. With Mosley, the way the feedback looks I have gotten is that people hate the fight because they don't view it as competitive AND because they view Marquez as the more preferred (and available) option.

Mike (UK)

Any details about Khan next opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Up in the air. Judah was brought up but if you read today's notes you'll see that's a long way from reality. Lamont Peterson has been mentioned. There is also Breidis Prescott for a rematch out there and they've been going back and forth with press releases and a longer shot that has been mentioned is British fighter John Murray, an up and coming kid.

Mike (UK)

DTM, whats the latest on Maravilla opponent for March

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Lots of back and forth with HBO. First they accepted Lee and now they are supposedly cold to him and pushing Dziziruk, but the price DiBella has to pay Dzinziruk is waaaaayyyy more than Lee and HBO isn't really upping the money from what I understand so why is DiBella going to pay Dzinziruk about a $1 million package when he actually brings less to the table than Lee, who will come a lot cheapter, is a natutal middleweight AND will help sell tix in NY on St Patty's Day weekend? There is also Zbik, who is mandatory and Sergio does not want to give up the belt. He would also come much cheapter than Dzinziruk. I like the idea of Dzinziruk but he is unknown and not worth so much more than these other guys. I don't blame DiBella for not wanting him unless the price is appropriate. It's not Lou's fault that HBO made a promise to put Dzinziruk on and that his promoters have a lunatic minimum with him if he's on HBO.

Tony (Boston,Ma)

Hey Dan, I know its all about the money but do you agree its an absolute joke that Pacman is gonna fight or should I say pummel Mosley this fight is a joke if people want to send a message to boxing dont buy this payperview Marquez and even Berto would atleast be competitive Mosleys gonna get hurt bad guranteed your thoughts thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

I sense real and serious anger from boxing fans over this fight based on the feedback I have received over the last few days. So while I do not advocate a "boycott" because that does not work, every single fan can make his or her own choice and simply not buy the fight if they are that upset about it.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

Since Pacman stated that he only has 2 fights left in him, who do you see his final fight to be against? Marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Pacman says a lot of things. I have never heard him say two more fights. And even if he did, that can changed in the blink of an eye. I have no thought whatsoever on the topic because I don't buy the premise of your question.

Richard (Oxford, UK)

DTM, from what I've read/heard Froch vs Johnson is going to be held in America. I cannot for the life of me understand why. Economically surely it makes better sense to be a UK fight??

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

According to the Super Six master contract, the semis and final are supposed to be in America. I have heard the Froch people are pushing for the fight to be in the UK, and I don't blame them. I am not sure where in America Froch-Johnson sells any tickets to make it seriously worthwhile being here. I love Johnson as much as anyone, but he isn't a ticket seller at all. Froch has a chance to bring in a nice crowd in England. It makes sense to be over there unless there is a site here that they can present that makes sense. And I just don't see it.

Darryl (Montreal)

Do you believe that Freddie Roach really thinks the Mosely fight is a good fight or is he just trying to be the good soldier?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Freddie is a good soldier.

Gamma (Puerto Rico)

When were gonna see Juanma again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

April on Showtime. Read today's notebook Freak.

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Dan, why would Khan fight Peterson next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Just one option. It's not like there are a bunch of big names he could fight insted.

Gil (NYC)

What a great scenario you posted regarding the 175 pound division. I pray the powers that be give it a shot

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

It would be great.

tony torres (zapata texas)

would pacmans granteed purse be significantly off if he would have fought marquez.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Not at all. Arum can say all he want that Mosley is a bigger draw but look at his and Marquez's last fight. JM Marquez did about 180,000 on PPV in the dead of summer with his rematch against Diaz coming off a loss to Mayweather. Mosley, also coming off a loss to Mayweather, did maybe 130,000ish with Sergio Mora on a much better date. So you tell me which would do bigger business right now? Arum is full of it when he says Marquez would not be as big of a fight. The perception is that Mosley is shot and Marquez is not. On top of that Marquez is the guy who had two great fights with Pacman and they were both controversial. That sells, especially with a massive Mexican turnout on the Cinco de Mayo holiday.

Keith (Philly)

Sooo Arum's plan is to sucker people into watching a terrible, one-sided fight (early odds 7-1) by using a washed up "name" instead of attempting to put on a great fight that could have people buzzing afteward? No wonder boxng has become an afterthought..

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I can't argue.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

What are you initial thoughts on the proposed Adamek-Peter fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

As far as heavyweight fights go, it's not bad. Let's see if Peter has anything left after getting destroyed by Wlad and let's see if Adamek can beat a powerful heavyweight.

Ronaldo (NY)

Judging by your recent blog, you take great enjoyment in lecturing the masses on "what's best for boxing". That being said, do you think it is in boxing's best interest for you to cover this Pac-Mosley fight? Wouldn't you be doing boxing more good by just ignoring it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

My job is to cover boxing. It is how I pay my bills and pay the mortgage. And Pacquiao is the No. 1 fighter in the sport. When he fights, you cover it, whether you like the fight or not. Simple as that.

victor (north jersey)

again pac vs mosley is like ending up under the miseltoe with an unattractive woman

miguel (los angeles)

Mosley has never been a big draw, a great guy, great fighter(past his prime) but a great draw as bob claims he is not what hurts is that arum tries to screw us and lie about it at least if your going to screw us tell us the truth.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

I've always been a Shane fan. Known and covered him for a decade. Been to tons of his fights. Have a great relationship with him. He'll be in the Hall of Fame someday. But he has never been the biggest draw. He has been basically the greatest B-side in recent history whether it was with Oscar twice, Mayweather, Vargas twice.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)

Because of this dumb fight this means Berto will probably fight a no name guy or someone like Paulie at 147 and probably Marquez vs Morales am I right D$$$.

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

You are probably right except that there's no chance that Berto-Malignaggi is happening next for Berto.

al (denver)

do you know if mile high mike alvarado is out of jail?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Yes, he is and he fought a couple of weeks ago on a Top Rank Live undercard. He's supposed to be on TV on a TR Live card in February.

Chris (Chatsworth, CA)

Prime Toney at Middleweight (in good shape) against prime Hopkins. I pick Toney. You?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Would be pretty interesting to see two masters against each other. Hard to pick. Both great when they are their best.

Ty (Portland)

who is better looking Oscar De la hoya or Sergio Martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

I'll have to ask my wife.

Corey (westwick)

Hbo should take the shot and put Martinez and Cotto on the same night who knows if both of them win it could set up a great bout between the two

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Would love it and have mentioned it. But I think it's too costly.

Scott W. (UK)

Is there even a remote chance that with all the backlash, Arum has a change of heart and drops Mosley - maybe after Bradley/Alexander if one of them puts on a show.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

None.

Lee (Salisbury, MD)

DTM, If I may ask a question not related to Pac vs Mosley. How long before Lateef Kayode fights a top 10 Cruiser? I really like what I've seen from this guy so far.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

He's exciting. I think he's a couple of fights away from that but I would imagine at some point in 2011 if he keeps winning, he'll get a more mneaningful fight. He's supposed to be on the Jan. 29 Bradley-Alexander undercard, although no opponent that I know of yet. But he's a big strong dude and can punch. I like watching guys like that.

Joe (NJ)

I'll have to ask my wife. .. Good answer ,

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

It's the truth dude!

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

Bob Arum = Scrooge.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

And the Grinch.

victor (north jersey)

wouldnt it have made sense for pac vs marquez..assuming pac wins..fight the winner of berto mosley..n assumming berto wins wud get pac next cuz he finally beat a so called "name"..but it is boxing so i guess what makes sense..really doesn't

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Of course, and I wrote exactly that not long ago in a blog.

Richard (Oxford, UK)

Dan, Haye has now offered Wlad a complete 50/50 split on the entire monetary package (including UK TV revenue, where I personally do not believe Wlad deserves parity). What is the hold up on Wladimir signing the contract??

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Don't believe everything you read. Haye side is not telling the whole story. They want Wlad to pay certain money as it relates to the German TV deal. Let them spint it all they want.

miguel (los angeles)

have you rewatched Hopkins-Pascal, I have and I had it wider for hopkins than watching it live.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I have rewatched it and instead of 114-112 for BHop I would have it 115-112 instead.

Tom (Washington State)

Thanks for the chat, King Freak. Season's wishes to you and Mrs. DTM, and all the freaks across the nation. Everybody celebrate safely because we have some good looking fights coming up in '11.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Thanks and same to all the Fight Freaks!

Abe (Portland)

Martinez is way better looking

Charles D. (Inkster, MI)

If i dont buy the Pacman v sugar sane fight will i lose my freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

No. If you don't buy it I can't blame you.

Rob (boston)

Dan, why doesn't Pacman get heat for the opponents he has beat up on over the past 2 years? Bob Arum is ruining the sport and at his old age is trying to make as much money as possible with his own fighters and pacman is fighting back to back cheaters in MOsley and Magarito. What is you're opinion?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

I haven't had a big issue with Manny's opponents recently. You know my feelings on Margarito but I understood. This one Manny deserves blame too. Defintely.

Julio (Panama)

Dan-0..Do you think maybe Bhop goes higher in weight? He did metion wanting to fight for a HW championship

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

He mentioned it in the past but there is no available heavyweight title bout for him. The cruisers are mostly tied up. He's at his best at 175. If something at the heavier weight came up that was worth his while I am sure he would consider it knowing Bernard.

Chuck V (PDX)

DTM,How does HBO make money from non-PPV fights? How big of a cut of the gate do they get?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

They don't "make" anything. They are a subscription network. They need to keep their subscribers happy and they do that in part by presenting top level fights. If HBO dropped boxing I (and many others) would simply cancel the service. So it's not about profit. It's about maintaining, or perhaps increasing, their subsciber base. But HBO doesn't "make" anything on a fight on the network.

maniroc (Cicero, IL)

Any chance the Pacaquio vs. Mosley fight doesn't happen due to legal issues with Golden Boy and Mosley?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

No, there are not any real issues. Mosley, promotionally speaking, is a free agent based on what I have heard from both sides. His ownership piece of GB is another matter. That could wind up in court, but won't stop the fight.

alejandro (mexico)

Hi, Dan... Do you know the result for Hugo Cazares fight???? Thanks...

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Yes, he won a unanimous decision in Osaka, Japan, today.

Don (San diego)

Dan the man. Don't u want to see if Pacquiao can beat an African American fighter

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I've never thought about it and don't care. But as long as you brought it up, the only one I "care" about seeing him fight is Mayweather.

Silva (San Diego)

Did you think Hopkins knockdown in the first round should have been called a knockdown?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Defintely not. I have rewatched it several times. It was a shot behind the head and should have not counted.

Ross (Indianapolis)

Love the thought of Guerrero vs. Katsidis. Maybe the winner could get Soto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

It's a great fight but the winner getting Soto is unlikely given the whole Top Rank-Golden Boy feud.

Matt (Lincoln,NE)

Dan, I can already see one angle Bob will use to sell this fight, Mosley knocked out Margarito for his last win (2 years ago) were as Pacman did not

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Yawn.

Aaron (Cincinnati)

Not only are boxing fans being expected to drop $50 to watch Manny retire Shane but since it's a Top Rank promotion the undercard will almost certainly suck as well. Great job Arum.

Nick (Queens)

Dan, because I am a loyal freak WHO FOLLOWS YOU ON TWITTER, I noticed you say that Lou DiBella was drunkenly ranting on the Bat Phone. Can you share anything that he said?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

No. But I appreciate you following me! All Freaks should @danrafaelespn

Jose Sulaiman (WBC Headquarters)

Oscar De La Hoya is the Diamond Hot Boxing Champion. Sergio Martinez is in line to be the Hot Boxer in Emeritus, but we're still waiting on the small sanctioning fee from his camp.

Steve (Hartford)

Will Margarito have an interim bout before Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I guess it's possible, but unlikely. The plan as it stands now is for Cotto to fight March 12 and then face Margarito in a rematch in June.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Dan, props for the great blog and piece on ESPN news about how terrible the Manny-Mosley match-up is. The freaks know this fight sucks but the general sports fan needs to know to.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Spread the word brother!

Travis (NJ)

HBO makes money off my freakin' cable bill every month. Keeps going higher and higher. Can't always say the same about the quality of fights though.

Hayemaker (London)

won't let the Klits have a piece of the Falkland Islands PPV revenue. That all mine.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

al (denver)

given that berto lost out on the manny sweepstakes and cotto looks like hes got a fight lined up, who would you like to see andre fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

It's a tough call. Ideally, I'd like to see him fight Cotto. I would be fine with Mosley. Since they are not happening it's a tough call. I don't think there is anything wrong with him fighting Aydin, who is his mandatory and who I have ranked in the top 10 at welter. But there are not a lot of quality choices right now.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan any news on the Pac-Mosley undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Not yet.

Seda (Tampa)

Dan, Should mosley hire a new trainer to stand achance against Pac?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Are you crazy? He has Naazim Richardson, who is one of the very best in the business. Shane could have Eddie Futch and still be a huge underdog.

Ryan (PVD)

Aside from the 1st knockdown missed call, how do you think the ref did over all in the Hopkins fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Other than that I have no issues.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

I take it there is no news on the Bradley-Alexander undercard yet either, even though it's only a month away.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

They're working on it. One fight that I was told is set for the card is Vernon Paris vs. Tim Coleman at jr welter. Solid fight.

Steve (Worcester)

How good can Edwing Rodriquez become?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

He has huge upside and is one of boxing's top prospects. He also has a hometown fan base, a good amateur background and has gotten tremendous experience sparring with guys like Froch and Pascal.

Julio (DFW)

What about a Cintron/Cotto fight in March?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

That has not been brought up.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

Berto-Randall Bailey? Hot fight but too bad HBO wouldnt buy.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

That is a scary, scary fight for Berto. I wouldn't mind seeing it. Randall has the power to knockout a moose. He lands on Berto and it's good night. But Berto has the speed and movement.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

First it will be a PPV fight, not a regular HBO fight. At this moment, Arum and HBO do not have a deal. Despite the bluster from Bob I would expect they will eventually make one. But nothing is a gaurantee.

brody (nyc)

I ask every week but you never answer... Why not a Berto/Martinez fight? Berto always comes in in the mid-150s. Both DiBella. Is it that unrealistic?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Very unrealistic.

Isai (OKC)

I second the Berto-Bailey fight. Don't mind HBO paying for that one.

Scott (Washington Twp, NJ)

Just wanted to know what you think about nonito donaire.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Tremendous fighter who has been buried in recent years. But he finally get a big fight with Montiel in February, which I am greatly looking forward to. Donaire can basically do everything well.

Silva (San Diego)

If you could only chose one to retire would it be Roy Jones or Evander?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Jones, believe it or not. I think he's more damaged at this point that Evander. They are both greats and I would love to see them both call it a day.

Isai (OKC)

What can you tell us about the March match between Despaigne and Sillakh? Great match, and can't wait.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Interesting fight between two undefeated prospects. Usually you don't see that kind of fight so early in their pro careers, but it's interesting to me. It will headline on ESPN2 on March 4.

Derek (Brooklyn)

Why is Top Rank putting Cotto in Vegas instead of NY or AC? Also, if the rematch with Margarito comes off would that be in NY pre-Puerto Rican day parade?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

NY is taken by the Martinez fight. I also think Bob wants to bring more fights to Vegas because he knows how bad the city is hurting and he believes the Puerto Rican fans will travel for Cotto. Cotto-Marg site is interesting because from what I understand MSG will be closed in June for rennovations and there won't be a fight there. So Arum has talked about doing Cotto-Margs at the new Meadowlands. The rematch could also wind up in Vegas.

Julio (DFW)

So are we ever going to get Chris John/Gamboa? You reported that neither side was interested, but I keep hearing that both sides are.

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

As I have said repeatedly, that fight is not happening and not being seriously discussed. They are light years apart on money with each other and with HBO.

Dave Horner (Leeds, United Kingdom)

Best young prospect in boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

I'll have my prospect of the year and the full list next week with the rest of the annual awards.

Justin (San Antonio)

What about a Berto/Collazo rematch? First fight was highly entertaining and I want to see much more in ring from Berto before I shell out $55 to see Manny extinguish his rising star

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Who gives a crap about that rematch now anyway? Collazo is basically retired. Dude doesn't fight and I think has had one fight since their match. I'm over it.

kyon (st. louis)

what do think of jorge linares vs robert guerrero

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

There are several interesting matches that can be made between the better guys at 130/135 and that is certainly one of them.

Aaron (Cincinnati)

Don't laugh but any news on Clottey? He always made decent fights until the Pacquiao debacle.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Actually, you just jogged my memory. It is possible he could be on the Cotto or Pacquiao PPV undercards.

Mightytitan (NYC)

Is thier a possibilty B-Hop might turn his attention towards Clouds title?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Anything is possible. If BHop doesn't get a rematch with Pascal, nothing wrong with Hopkins challenging Cloud.

dantheboxingfan (flanders NJ)

Dan you said once that you will go to your grave believing Margarito had loaded wraps when he fought Cotto. Will you also go to your grave believing Aurturo Gatti was killed and not suicide?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

100 percent.

Rommel (Alameda, CA)

Hey Dan,Will HBO do a 24/7 for PAC-Mosley??? Thanks...

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

It's a bit premature to answer that because first they would have to actually have a deal to do the fight.

Silva (San Diego)

Hey Dan have you been watching 24/7 Penguins Caps?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I caught about 15 minutes of a replay of the first episode. It doesn't interest me much at all so no.

Mike (ny)

Hey Dan what do you think about a Margarito/Foreman fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

No interest whatsoever.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

Who is in the interesting fight between prospects on March 4 on ESPN2? The question wasn't posted and its not on the schedule.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

It was posted: What can you tell us about the March match between Despaigne and Sillakh? Great match, and can't wait.

Jeff (Dearborn, MI)

So what did you think of the new WBC rankings?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

I still have no looked at them. They are sitting in my in box. I can't bring myself to do it.

Ricky (NY)

Soto/Antillon II for the Pac/Mosley undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Would be awesome but, like I said, it's a big premature to discuss that undercard.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Are you taking some time off for the holidays? It's been a crazy boxing month and I'm guessing you'll want some time to recharge.

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Actually, none. I will be hunkered down the next several days doing all the awards pieces. Maybe after Jan. 1 I'll take a few days off.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

Do you think we'll ever see a time where the bogus boxing federations are finally eliminated and a single overarching boxing commission is created? Is the money too big to keep that from ever happening?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

I'll be president of the US and you will be my VP before that happens.

Eddie (Nairobi Kenya)

King Freak,no mention of the Lovechild today??

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

carlos (houston, tx)

HAPPY HOLIDAYS DTM|!!!! my wife always asked why I read your chat transcripts....I told her you were also a cat lover and NOW SHE REMINDS ME TO READ THEM!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

I dub your wife an Honorary Diamond Freaks and in the holiday spirit, no sanctioning fee.

Isai (OKC)

Hope the Peter v. Adamek fight gets made. Would love to see ESPN3 work something out. This could be one of the better heavyweight fights available to us.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

If that fight happens, it will likely be a PPV card in the US.

Tom (NJ)

Did you see Sergio Martinez on TMZ? Is he the next crossover star?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I didn't see it but was told he was on there. That's pretty cool.

Joe (Ellsworth Air Force Base)

Dan, when big dogs like you and Iole write articles pretty much sticking it to Arum, do you think it gets a reaction from him? Does he call you to give you a piece of his mind? Does he ever agree with you?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Bob's a big boy and he can take the heat. I will give him credit for this -- I've covered him and Top Rank for about 11 years. Other than a couple of times he's usually been a gentleman when it comes to the criticism. He has a thick skin, like I do.

Steve (Hartford)

Is Marquez now going to fight on Apr. 16?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

That was Golden Boy's plan last I spoke to Richard Schaefer about it.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

Chat next week?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

What kind of question is that? Will the sun set later?

Jose Suliaman (Mexico)

Dan, haven't I taught you anything?! There is ALWAYS a sanctioning fee, holidays or no holidays.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

My bad, President for Life.

Nick (Atlanta)

WBC heavyweight rankings:1. Floyd Mayweather's Ego 2. That security guard that Floyd poked 3. Dan Rafael's Cat Popo 4. Bob Arum's bank account 5. Evander Holyfield set to fight a title eliminator with: 6. Nikolay Valuev's Christmas dinner bowel movement

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Seek help.

Chris D. (Chicago)

You'd have to give Hopkins the benefit of the doubt in EVERY close round to have him win. I was there (and rooting for him), but in boxing you have to stay on your feet. Draw was not ideal, but certainly fair.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I actually didn't think there were many close rounds. I thought BHop was clearly winning all but one round after the third.

Earl (LA)

Any word on Paul Williams' next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Nothing. He likely won't fight again until at least April or May.

maniroc (Cicero, IL)

I don't care what day it is today, it feels like a Friday only b/c there is Rafael chat! Chat trumps all, including days of the week!

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

YES!

Nick (Atlanta)

DTM chatting every week is as likely as Jose Sulaiman's re-election.

Nas (Watford, UK)

Completely agree about Bhop-Pascal scoring. It was a close fight yes, but it was easy to score the rounds, so Bhop was the clear winner (you can have a close fight and a clear winner!)

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

I agree.

JD (NJ)

will the search party find Winky Wright in 2011?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Who?

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Dan, have you always loved the sweet science or did it grow on you as you began to cover it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

I've been a fan since I was a kid, although it dramatically increased later on.

Chris (Overland Park, kS)

Dan, you said you rewatched and had Hopkins winning by 1 more point. Did you score the 10th round for Hopkins this time? I watched and gave Hopkins the 10th.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

No, I scored the first round 10-9 for Pascal instead of 10-8 because the knockdown was bogus in a round that was awfully close.

Jeff (Redondo Beach, CA)

Watch and Thai fights lately?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

As a matter of fact, I was watching the DVD I recently received of Pongsaklek's most recent fight. Not joking.

Joel (Queens,NY)

Joke time!!!! Is the golden boy, top rank war holding back the Mora-Clottey?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

That would be one good thing about their feud -- we will never see that squalor.

skit781mass (lynn, ma.)

please tell me I'm still high. Is pac really fighting shane?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Sorry bro. It's true.

Tom (NJ)

My biggest problem with Pac/Mosley is the fact that Shane will never be the same as a human being after this fight. He's already slurring his speech a bit, and after Pacquiao puts a beating on him, there's no doubt he'll be brain damaged worse than necessary. It's sad, really.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

There are a lot of people sending in that similar thought.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

DTM's chats differ from Jose Sulaiman's re-election only in that Dan doesn't first say he's going to retire from chatting, then comes back and chats anyway.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

That is a tremendous point.

Justin (Indy)

Great fight by B-Hop. I wish we'd be able to see an immediate rematch. I have no desire to see Pascal/Dawson 2.

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

I don't really have a lot of interest in Pascal-Dawson 2 either.

Moe (Rancho Cucamonga, CA)

Happy Holidays Dan to you and your fam, what do you think of a Marquez vs Maidana fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

No point to it. Why would Marquez take it? Not huge money and not for a title.

Jeff (Dearborn, MI)

Does Jose Suliaman attend all the major WBC championship fights? If so, have you ever chatted with him?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

El Presidente doesn't attend every wretched WBC title fight but I have met him and spoken to him many times over the years.

Santa Claus (North Pole)

Mr Rafael, I have a few presents I need to get out to some Boxing folks and can use your help!Lou DiBella: a prescription for Xanax,Paul Williams: a strong cup of coffee to help him wake up!,Nicolai Valuev: EXTRA strong rolls of toilet paper,Floyd Mayweather Jr: a cellmate who weighs only 130 lbs,David Haye: cujones!and to all the freaks: a 2011 full of great fights!Merry Christmas!

Davis (Orlando)

Valuev poop=Pac vs Mosley

Mike (NYC)

What do you think the key to B-Hops longevity? I hear the man lives a very very disciplined life outside the ring.

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

BHop has taken care of himself from Day 1. He doesn't drink, smoke or party. He doesn't chase women -- been with the same woman forever. Does not cut corners training. Keeping himself in shape in his 20s and 30s has allowed him to keep doing it in his 40s. The fact that he has stayed hungry even after all the accomplishments and money he has made is remarkable.

craig (md)

"Randall has the power to knockout a moose" Dan can we start measuring all knockout power based of animals a fighter could KO?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

If you would like, sure.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Happy Holidays DTM, I like the send off Sportcenter gave you, "Don't make the Raf angry"

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

That did crack me up.

Sean (NJ)

Have you ever spoken with Al Haymon? Do you even know what the guy looks like? He seems so secretive and shady that sometimes I think he doesn't exist. Then I realize Berto makes $1mil for his fights and realize he must

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Talked to Al many times in person and on telephone.

Gamma (Puerto Rico)

Who is Rigoberto Alvarez and why he is wba "regular" champ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Who am I? What I am I doing here?

Hayemaker (London)

I vow to clean Britain out of heavyweights in 2011

Greg (Los Angeles)

I saw your notebook but was just wondering how realistic a Cotto-Mayorga fight is? I can't imagine Arum splitting money with DK when he can make a fight in house.

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

They can make that fight if they want. Arum will give King his respect and buy him out. King knows he has no leverage in that deal. I think Arum and King enjoy working with each other now as the warhorses of the business. Arum is smart enough to know that with him and King working together on a fight it will generate stories and publicity for the fight.

Richard (Oxford UK)

Dan this has been bugging me for AGES!! Who is the African-American guy you see in the ring at many fights, with 2 guys who look like his kids? I see him at Mayweather, Williams, Berto fights etc. Any help much appreciated!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I have answered this question many times. His name is Sam Watson. He is Haymon's right hand man and represents him at a lot of fights involving Al's guys. The two young men with him are his sons.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Between Marquez drinking his urine, Valuev's poop, and Vitali Klitschko wrapping his hand in his kid's wee, you have to admit that boxing and bodily waste are irrevocably tied to each other.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Thanks for the reminder.

Leo (NYC)

Is Amir Khan anywhere near being in the Pacquiao picture?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

No. Besides they are both with Freddie and have a teacher-montor relationship. They train with each other. It a fight that likely never happens.

Tony (Sacramento)

Why isn?t Freddie Roach in the International Boxing HOF? Is there a waiting period for trainers?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

No there is no waiting period for a trainer. He will be in the HOF eventually. I have no doubt.

D.H. (Memphis)

I don't find myself caring whether Mayweather fights anymore...

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

There have been several people saying that in recent weeks. You are not alone.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Will the shower door fight again in 2011?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Not really sure.

kyon (st. louis)

Yo Dan, how many Kameda brothers are there? And have you watched any of their fights?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

I believe there are three active professionals and all three fight this weekend in Japan, two in world title bouts. I have seen many, many of there fights. I have been getting tapes of their fights for the past few years.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, have you ever seen a top level exec in any other sport openly diss the fans the way Bob Arum has? He continually makes this sport more and more difficult to love, but damned if I still don't love it. He is making decision that are only good for the short term, but the long term effects will certainly affect his bottom line eventually. I am currently flipping him off.

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Bob doesn't care about you or the hardcore fans. Once you realize that you will be able to deal with it.

Stephen (Tulsa)

Did you see the Showtime year in review? It really seems like they are going out of there way to get their MMA stuff on the same page with boxing. It was kind of annoying.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

I didn't watch it last night but I recorded it on my DVR. If there's too much MMA or if it's mixed in with the boxing stuff I'll just delete it.

maniroc (Cicero, IL)

Do you think Cotto fight in PR ever again. Its been a awhilte since he has?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I think eventually he may fight at home again.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

Bob Arum would have Pacquiao fight a boxing kangaroo if he thought it would make him the most money.

Bob Arum (Vegas BABY)

A big Christmas MIDDLE FINGER to all the freaks out there.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

And a happy new year to you too.

Jacob (Brighton,UK)

I noticed your following Rachel Cordingley on twitter. made me giggle.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

It had to be done.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Bat Email people!

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Got an updated FNF schedule. Besides what is already posted on the ESPN.com schedule here are some other fights booked for the show:

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Feb. 11 in Montreal: Antonin Decarie vs. Shamone Alvarez and Jo Jo Dan vs. TBA; Feb. 18 in Salisbury, Md.: Fernando Guerrero vs. Saul Roman and Shawn Porter vs. TBA; Feb. 25 at TBA, Juan Carlos Burgos vs. Cristobal Cruz; and March 4 as previously mentioned in this chat at TBA: Ismayl Syllakh vs. Yordanis Despaigne with Hector Sanchez vs. Ray Nahr.

kyon (st. louis)

Yo Dan, would you to England to be ringside for Klitschko vs Haye

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

In the immortal words of our former broadcast hero: Absolutely. Definitely.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, What ever happened to Victor Cayo? It seemed as though he had some momentum before the Maidana KO. Is he building back up for another big fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

After that fight his child died and he has not been active.

Gamma (Puerto Rico)

what do you think the way Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. was brought up? with no amateur experience and he is now wbo 122 champ

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

I think is father/trainer Wilfredo Sr and his promoter/matchmaker Tuto Zabala Jr. have done a GREAT job with him.

miguel (los angeles)

Arum is proposing Marquez vs Berto, what do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Since he promotes neither who cares? He should have made Pacman-Marquez and Cotto-Berto.

Max (Spokane, WA)

Would a career-crossroads match between Arreola and Tua make too much sense to ever happen?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Would be a fun fight but I don't see it happening.

Greg (Boston)

Any news on when Boo Boo Andrade steps up from tomato cans?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

I heard he's moving from tomato cans to cans of corn in the very near future.

Stephen (Tulsa)

Why does ESPN not have an exclusive deal with a promotor like fox does with top rank?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Exclusives are bad for the business.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, We have some great fights set for early 2011, which one has you excited the most: Bradley v Alexander, Donaire v Montiel, or Mares v Agbeko?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I like all three.

Joe (NY)

Do you have a favorite current fighter?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Yes.

John ((NY))

Has there ever been any talk about a Martinez-Cintron rematch? I wouldn't mind seeing Martinez definitively wrap up unfinished business.

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

I think it was mentioned in passing but no serious discussion. Martinez is beyond that and doesn't need it or particularly want it. He already beat him easily and was ROBBED (or a knockout and a decision). If Cintron actually did something that warranted a rematch I guess it could happen in the future.

Brian (Artesia, CA)

Jingle Bells, Top Rank SmellsBob's laughing all the wayPacman signed, Shane is blind And Floyd Jr got away hey!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

These are my readers.

Nas (Watford, UK)

My christmas won't be the same if you don't tell me about your thoughts of Bhop-Martinez at a catchweight...

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

Pointless fight I have no interest in. Frankly, it's a stupid fight to even think of. BHop is a strong 175 now. Martinez is a small 160. No point, no interest and not big money for a fight with no natural point or venue. Merry Christmas.

Chico (Patterson, CA)

If Bob Arum is going to screw me, he could at least take me out to dinner first.

Silva (San Diego)

I have to hand it to B hop I was completely over him after the steaming pile that was his fight with Roy and now all of a sudden I'm really looking forward to his next fight.

Chico (Patterson, CA)

Any chance the winner of the Bantamweight tourney fights the winner of the Donaire vs Montiel fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

That would be ideal. But if Donaire wins I could see him moving up in weight.

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Dan, can you recall another time when I fighter goes 2 years without winning a fight and then gets the biggest fight of his career?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

No.

Cortez (New York, NY)

Lol...Shane gave another interview on a website saying it makes him sick "When he hears the ESPN guy on TV downplaying his skillset". he said that he got that talk right before the Margarito fight and look what happen..I think Shane is delusional. It nice to know that he listen and reads you however, two thumb up Dan!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Shane's entitled to his opinion as am I.

Bill (NYC)

Can we start the 12 days of Christmas again?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

OK, but I want the full song and it better be good or it's not getting posted. Come strong or don't come at all.

Romeo (DC)

Why not Matthysse vs. Maidana? Battle of the Argentines.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

I suggested it in a blog last week.

Tony (Detroit)

Dan - you answered Nas AND managed to ruin his Christmas. Well done.

Andrew (Ontario,Ca)

Why is Bob Arum trying to match other promoters fighters tougher than his??

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Exactly.

Gil (NYC)

How badly did Shane get cleaned out in his divorce settlement?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

According the report on TMZ, bad. Real bad.

floyd mayweather (out of hiding)

It's been a great day today. Nobody has bashed me yet.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

The day is young.

Hayemaker (London, England)

Hey Christy Martin...............bring it on you chicken!

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Now THAT cracked em up.

aaron (ma)

is there a Solo Boxeo telecast tomorrow night? Also, any boxeo telemundo show next month?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

There is no Telefutura tomorrow and yes, there is a Telemundo card next month.

D.H. (Memphis)

Dan, random question. Is Ike Ibeabuchi still in prison? If the man wasn't so damn crazy, he could have been a boxing legend. Alas, what could've been.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Still in the can.

Troy (Yonkers)

Dan, saw you on ESPN following the Pac-Mosley announcement. Just wondering, did you OD on caffeine that day?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Probably.

kyon (st. louis)

Yo Dan, can you explain the relationship between the IBF & South African Boxers

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

Pictures?

Ross (Indianapolis)

hearing about Pac-Mosley about made me want to OD on something, but it sure wasn't coffee...

Reznik (Seattle)

Manny's last three opponents have been Clottey (guy coming off a loss), Margarito (a convicted cheat and undeserving), and Mosley (way past his prime and hasn't won a fight in two years). Just saying.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

You're an idiot. Just saying.

Alex (Utah)

Dan do u still consider canelo a prospect or he a contender now?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

He has spent 2010 moving from prospect to contender.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

Did you see The Fighter? What did you think?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Haven't seen it yet.

Gil (NYC)

How is Stallone a questionable HOF'er? He has quality wins over Creed Lang Drago and Hogan.

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

SportsCenter anchor (CT)

The RAF is angry!

Lee (Salisbury, MD)

DTM, did you see anything last Friday night that makes you think Solis has a legit shot of pulling off the upset vs. Klit?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

If you missed it, read my blog on Pac-Mosley: http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/blog/_/name/rafael_dan/id/5945119/pacquiao-mosley-bad-fight-boxing

Steve (Hartford)

Will the Shumenov/Brahmer fight have any US tv coverage?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Up in the air.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

On the 12th day of Christmas my true love gave to me, 12 hour chats, 11 Rachael Cordinglys, 10 of Dan's best fight dvds, 9 DiBellas screaming, 8 Gary Shaws a-scheming, 7 great American heavyweight boxers, 6 phone book readings by Liev Schriber, 5 JMM cups of pee!!! 4 PPv undercards worthy of my money, 3 Sergio Martinez fights in 2011, 2 Klitschko-Haye fights, and Nicole Scgerzinger's phone number for me!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Impressive.

Davey (Montreal, Qc)

How did you score the 12th round of the Pascal/Hopkins fight? Did you score it for Hopkins who had forward momentum or for Pascal who landed the better shots?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

I scored it for Hopkins. He won the round.

Silva (San Diego)

I attended the Mosley Mora fight at the Staples center. One quickly became apparent. Most of those people were there to see Canelo not the main event. Man when he came out that place errupted

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

You're right. Compared to Canelo-Baldomir, Mosley-Mora was the walkout fight.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

On the 12th day of XMAS my true love gave to me, 12 Hayes a duckin, 11 Mayweather charges pending, 10 Marquez Combos, 9 HBO dates a filling, 8 Berto gimmies, 7 Cubans defecting, 6 Gary Shaw Jumpsuits shining, 5 Lampley BANGS, 4 titles interiming, 3 Kameda's fighting, 2 Promotional companies fueding, and a Pavlik in recoveryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! Happy Holidays Freaks!

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Love it!

Canada PM Stephen Harper (Ottawa)

even I know Hopkins beat Pascal.

Stephen (Tulsa)

I had to watch a documentary in class the other day that was narrarated by Liev Shriber, I kept waiting to for the montage of Joseph Stalin doing road work

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Are you still waiting?

Greg (Los Angeles)

Any idea if Rojas-Gamboa is still a possibility?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

As far as I know, Rojas is still on the shelf recovering from his injury.

Jorge (San Diego)

Dan, long time reader but since I'm a high school student I don't really get the chance to chat. Now that I'm finally on break I want to wish a Merry Christmas to you and Mrs. DTM as well as to all the freaks!

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Thanks, Freak.

Lou (Buffalo, NY)

Dan, great piece on Pacquiao/Mosley - It was scathing, but dead on. I feel ripped off already! You nailed it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

Thanks.

Franklin (Arizona)

On the Twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: 12 Duckers Ducking, 11 Sweatsuits Sweating, 10 Marquez's Peeing, 9 Worthless Belts, 8 Roy Jones's Retiring, 7 Berto Beatdowns, 6 Glass chins shattering, 5 million Fans screwed over by Arum!, 4 Felony chargers, 3 Crappy PPVs, 2 Sleeping Paul Williamses and A fight nobody wants to see!

Joe (PA)

Will HBO buy the Solis-Vitali fight or will it be on ESPN 3?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

I doubt HBO will buy that fight but I think it very could be on ESPN like previous Klitschko fights.

Hayemaker (London)

I will not share Gibraltar PPV revenue. The Klits can walk.

Oscar (Montana)

Dan what is your take on public restrooms?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

These are my readers and I am scared.

Craig (Pittsburgh, PA)

Just wanted to say thanks for being our voice on Twitter. Everyone should follow him and see how Dan backs down from no one on there. He tells it like it is so your missing out if you dont follow him @danrafaelespn

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Thanks for the plug.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Any rumblings on a Marquez opponent for April?

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Talking about Erik Morales.

Sneaky Pete (Brooklyn, NY)

Any news on David Lemieux? Disappointed not to see him on the FNF slate.

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

The Feb. 11 date was supposed to be for him but I think with the politics of doing the eliminator and the fact that it may wind up at a purse bid may delay David's next fight until April.

Hayemaker (UK)

I will give him only 50% of the PPV revenue in the Faroe Islands and possibly the British Virgin Islands those are my big money markets to Klit, I am making concessions

Eduardo (East LA)

Can we have a contest where the winner gets to spend a night at your house and watch the fights on your big screen?

J.R (puerto rico)

whats your opinion on a fantasy fight between cotto and trinidad?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

Would have been a great action fight without question.

Andrew (Ontario,CA)

I would love to see Marquez vs Soto

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

I would also.

Hayemaker (London)

I will share Bermuda, but not the Bahamas.

Tim (NJ)

Funniest boxing moment of year - finally got my girlfriend to show interest in boxing because she thinks Amir Khan is cute. In the 10th round, she was yelling at Maidana to stop hitting Khan.

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

That is classic.

Richard (Oxford UK)

Best ring entrance of 2010 Dan? Wlad's against Sam Peter for me!

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

LOVED that one with the Ali footage.

Silva (San Diego)

Is Eric Morales hurting for money or is he actually hungry to be semi great again?

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

As far as I understand, Morales is not in any financial trouble at all but just likes to fight and wants to win a lightweight title.

alex (white oak, ca)

The HBO 2011 calendar is a collector's item. That's the only time you'll see Floyd standing side by side with Pacquiao.

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

:(

Hayemaker (London)

Wlad can have South Korea, but the North is mine, all mine!!!

Craig (MD)

If you had to pick a dream fight under 115lbs, what would it be Dananconda? BTW All the Haye jokes are hysterical I can picture him saying these things

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Giovani Segura vs Roman Gonzalez.

Gerardo (AZ)

Just bought my tickets to Montiel - Donaire, Dan! See you there!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

Good! I hope to be out there for that fight.

M.M. (Chicago IL)

Any chanche we will get khan v winner of alexander/bradley in 2011?

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

Ideally, Bradley-Alexander fight Jan. 29. Khan fights in early April and if he wins, he fights the Bradley-Alexander winner in June or July.

Hayemaker (London)

I will not negotiate sharing the Somali TV rights. Those pirates love me!!

Floyd Mayweather (Vegas)

Why do you hate me so much Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Merry Christmas, Floyd.

Rafa (London)

Following Oscar De La Hoya on Twitter is like going to the gorilla cage at the zoo- you sense a spark of human intelligence, but what comes out is complete gibberish.

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

OMG THAT IS HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nick (Sacramento)

Wait, so Sam Peter and Eddie Chambers are part of a 4 man tournament to become the IBF Mandatory and get another shot at Wlad? REALLY?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Nobody else will participate. The IBF has been up and down its rankings and the guys who have accepted are Peter, Chambers and Rossy and Adamek, if his people can make the right deal for Peter.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, why does HBO promise fighters certain dates before an opponent has been found? Seems to me they are causing a lot of problems for themselves. Why not just buy the best fights that are made and then set the date and location? Seems to me they should have the leverage to do this.

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Give this man a prize! DING DING DING!

Scott (Staten Island)

Listening to Kiss, Black Diamond during the chat = perfection!

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Sweeeeet.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Who has more cross-over potential: Canelo Alvarez, David Lemieux, or Devon Alexander?

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

All three have a chance to be stars. They all bring a lot to like to the table.

Haymaker (London)

They can have Palestine, but I'm not sharing the Israeli TV money.

Richard (Oxford, Uk)

OMG Rafa, that is THE freak quote of 2010. I'm literally crying with laughter that was so funny!!

Darryl (Montreal)

Rafa!!! Amazing!!! Hahahahaha

brad (NY)

Was watching the O'Riley factor on Monday and Juan Williams was counting down the biggest loosers of 2010. He mentioned Mayweather. He called him a boxer that wont box. It was pretty funny dialoge. Did you catch it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

I didn't see that but I once sat next to Juan Williams on a flight from Washington to Las Vegas.

Mike (Philly)

Buy or Sell: Pac vs. JMM in the fall

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

Sell.

Bozena (Poland)

I hate you!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

That's the holiday spirit!!!!!!

Steve (Hawaii)

DTM, great coverage this month. You are right on the ball reacting to the Pac-Mosley announcement. I follow you on Twitter. It is great stuff! Have you considered creating a separate Facebook account for boxing only? All we have to do is "like" it and follow it. Alot of columnists do that. You'd be my favorite!

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

Now I have to also have a Facebook? Isn't Twitter and my stuff on ESPN.com enough???

Hayemaker (London)

it all comes down to Antarctica TV rights. If the Klits don't budge, it's their fault.

Justin (Seattle)

I went to the WBC website and now my computer has a virus. I do not think this is a coincidence. I also need a shower to wash off the stench.

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Did you pay a small sanctioning fee for the visit?

Fight Freaks (Everywhere)

Hey Bob, here is our collective middle finger! Take your garbage fights and piss off! Go ruin a different sport please. Any promoter who openly disses the fans has no business being in business!

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

Pretty much whatever one says today.

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

One of the Freaks just made me think of this -- how can HBO turn down Cotto-Vanes for $1.5 million yet will flush $1.2 million down the toilet for Berto-Freddy Hernandez on an undercard? Unreal.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC Headquarters)

I can give you the antivirus program... for a small fee, of course.

Ricky (NY)

Hey Dan, a rare chance to educate you!!! You can actually like your Facebook to your Twitter accounts so you can essentially enter all of your material into either or and it will register on the opposite social network. Think of it as getting 2 worthy main events on the same PPV card.

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

Interesting. I'll have to look into that.

Reid (Cleveland)

Dan - at least we have the Kentucky Derby to look forward to on May 7.....

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley. And May 7 is also my mother's birthday!

victor (north jersey)

dtm whats ur streaks with consecutive weekly chats..im sure it trumps any iron man streak out there

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

No idea but this is my 59th chat of 2010 and I'll finsh up next week with my record for a year, 60.

Daniel (SF)

I've enjoyed these marathon cards that Frank Warren has been putting on recently. Are there more of them in the works?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

Not sure but I think Frank is doing them because he doesn't have a big star to hang his hat on right now but he has several middle level guys who all bring something to the party along with nice prospects on the way up.

Braindamaged2too (the Asylum)

Danta Claus,Now that Arum is giving us Pacquiao vs Mosley with the "1st African American" angle, do you think Arum will go extraterrestrial and give E.T. a shot...?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

LOL!

Bob Arum (Whooseville)

I don't see what everyone is complaining about? I'll even throw in a free Ruiz vs. Audley Harrison bout on the undercard, and have Sergio Mora battle Peter Manfredo as well

Jose Sulaiman (Mexico)

60 Chats?! That's more than the number of new belts we released this year!

Joe (NJ)

With an average of lets say 3 hours a chat that's 180 hours worth this year. Or roughly 7 days straight of chats. Very impressive.

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

Inever thought of it that way. I need to get a life don't I? :)

Steve (Denver)

Went on a date two weeks ago and a question whether she liked Boxing or UFC came up. Her answer was boxing. Our next date was her coming over watching the Pascal-Hopkins fight. Should I actually give this relationship time or marry her now?

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

Get the ring today or tomorrow. Can probably find a nice deal as a last-minute shopper on Christmas Eve.

Ronaldo (Juarez, MExico)

Dan my wife is giving birth to our third son, but I am here to chat withh you! Freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

No, just a jerk.

Zim (Boston)

Pac-Mosley is like a chat-off between Dan and Simmons. Early KO.

Everardo (Sacramento)

Just wanted to let you know that you were the one who first told me about Saul Alvarez a couple of years ago in your Notebook, I then created his Wikipedia page, now its looked at 30,000 times a month!!!

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

Impressive. You'll get a lot more if you put up photos of his girlfriend.

Ronaldo's wife (Juarez, Mexico)

my husband is a jerk...wait till he finds out its not his baby.

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

Legendary.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

Ronaldo's wife UD over Rafa for comment of the chat.

Jason (Boston, MA)

How about Roy Jones vs. Evander in a retirement match?

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 PM)

As long as they BOTH retire.

Joe (Ellsworth Air Force Base)

lol!!!!! not his baby!!! hahahaha

Paul (Carlsbad)

that baby line is cold and awesome all at the same time

oscar de la hoya (os angeles, ca)

Chowwwwwwwwww

Dan (Chicago)

Have you heard from Jeff Lacy after his loss?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

Nope.

Mike (ny)

Has De la Hoya commented on the Mosley split?

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

Not that I have heard other than his recent comments on twitter.

Dan Rafael
  (3:08 PM)

HBO had no fights for him and he didn't want to fight at 175 against Dawson. And it didn't see the point in overpaying to keep him with no obvious fight. It wasn't willing to spend what Showtime was. Showtime had opponents for him. HBO did not and I don't blame HBO for letting him walk.

dylan (austin)

If the Superdome collapses too, will Bradley-Alexander move back to STL?

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

If the sun explodes will we all die?

Joe (Boston)

Hey Dan please answer this question! Is it possible that Andre Ward could make it all the way down to 160 or is super middle as low as he goes? I would love to see Ward fight Sergio and i was wondering if we actually might see that.

Dan Rafael
  (3:12 PM)

Highly unlikely. Ward has plenty of action at 168, which is his weight. He is also on Showtime. There is no need for him to go down like that and I don't think he would want to or can.

Sean (NJ)

Why all the hate on the first knockdown of Hopkins? Looked very, very, similar to the KO shot from Glen Johnson over Green.

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

Not at all. Johnson's KO of Green came when Green leaned directly into a straight punch. Totally different than a cuffing shot behind the head that did no damage other than to knock BHop off balance.

Maury Povich [via mobile]

Ronaldo, you are NOT the father!!!

Brett (EL Paso, TX)

Dan would you rather: (A) Watch Sergio Mora vs. Shane Mosley 5 times, (B) Read Oscar's entire Twitter History, (C) Serve as Bob Arum's PR guy for the upcoming fight, or (D) Try to swim down Niagara Falls?

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

Tough but I will give it a try in order of preference: d, b, a, c.

john (DFW)

SO just to be clear dan, How many Ricky Hattons are there?

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

We've been over this before but in case you forgot: ONE.

Louis (Fredericton, NB)

Dan, according to Yvon Michel, the only way they can get rid of the Dawson rematch is that no network would offer the same money as the first fight. Do you think the Pascal-Dawson rematch is worth as much as the first fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

That is what Yvon told me and what I wrote a couple of days ago. I don't think Pascal-Dawson is worth as much in a rematch as it was for the first fight and I would personally far more prefer a rematch with Hopkins. It'll be HBO's call on what it wants to spend.

DJ (Hermosa Beach)

DTM - It's not just us Freaks who hate the Pac-Shane fight. I told a couple friends who only really watch the big fights (or the ones I make them watch) and they couldn't believe it. They are the "public masses" Arum talks about selling to, but they refuse to watch it also. Keep up the good work.

Justin (Indy)

Here's to hoping HBO does the right thing and forgoes Pascal/Dawson for Hopkins/Pascal.

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

Even if HBO there's no guarnatee it would get Pascal-Hopkins 2. Showtime could have an option on it.

Rob (New York)

Can you comment on what the chat attendance is today, the day before Christmas Eve?

Dan Rafael
  (3:21 PM)

Surprisinly good turnout. I thought it would be less than usual and it's about the same as a normal Friday.

Craig D. (Philly)

12 Buffers buffing, 11 Don King's swindling, 10 Arums flipping, 9 Lampley's banging, 8 Lederman scorecards, 7 Dibella's bellowing, 6 angry Raf's, 5 cheap golden trinkets, 4 rabbit punches, 3 body shots, 2 mandatories, and a Ricky Hatton (cause there is only one DUH)

Silva (San Diego)

Dan do you know Christy Martin personally? Our prayers go out to her and her family

Dan Rafael
  (3:23 PM)

I've met Christy a few times over the years, interviewed her a few times and been to a few of her fights. I certainly wish her well in her recovery.

ronaldo's wife (Mexico)

This is horrific. Just found out my child's real father and Ronaldo are lovers!

Dan Rafael
  (3:24 PM)

The saga continues!

taareq (UK)

why should Haye have to split the UK money but Wlad not split the German money in what's supposed to be a 50/50 split

Dan Rafael
  (3:25 PM)

Wlad is fine spitting the German money.

Julio (DFW)

By the way loved your jibjab link with the boxing promoters. Would have loved to seen Gary Shaw in there too. Absolutely hilarious.

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 PM)

I play that like a couple of times a day it is so freakin' hilarious.

Dan Rafael
  (3:29 PM)

All Freaks MUST watch this. You'll wet yourself: http://elfyourself.jibjab.com/view/b1te7TruKb7ptflaYN6j

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

I have to say Dan, along with a previous comment. I have about 4-5 friends that are VERY casual fans of boxing. And each one has told me, with out my influence, that the matchup of Pacquiao vs Mosley is pure garbage. Basically told me if I order the fight, I'll be watching it by myself...

Ronaldos wife's baby (hospital)

My mommy said i have 2 daddys!!! yaaaaay!

jon (la)

hilarious i loved bob arum prancing around great stuff

Dan Rafael
  (3:32 PM)

That video rules! Have to give props -- my boy Chris Mannix from SI made it.

Darth Vader (The Death Star)

Ronaldo...I'm your baby's father.

Ian (Pembroke Pines, FL)

Did you get any feedback from Arum about the Pac-Mosley column?

Dan Rafael
  (3:33 PM)

Yes. Almost every person of the literally about a thousand responses on my twitter agreed with it.

Hayemaker (London)

if Klit ducks this offer, we go right to Sprott

Ken (Cali)

Why would Cotto ever give Margarito a rematch? Everyone with sense knows he had loaded gloves and Cotto himself said he didn't want to help cheaters.

Dan Rafael
  (3:38 PM)

Probably for the $$$$$$$$$.

Ross (Grimsby, UK)

All the freaks want to know, which hotel had the best shower pressure this year?

Dan Rafael
  (3:38 PM)

Very tough call but it sure wasn't the Gaylord in Texas.

maniroc (Cicero, IL)

Looks like FNF is starting off with some really solid cards in 2011?

Dan Rafael
  (3:39 PM)

Agreed.

Hayemaker (London)

if my fans want Mormeck, they will get Mormeck

Robert (Dayton)

Why isn't HBO pushing for Martinez-Pirog? I know DiBella isn't particularly crazy about Pirog's drawing power, but I've heard HBO wants him back and it seems like it would be far easier to get that fight made than one with equally obscure Dzinziruk.

Dan Rafael
  (3:42 PM)

I would love the Pirog fight but I am told that Martinez isn't interested in fighting for the WBO belt since the WBO stripped him.

Taylor (NC)

Props to you on your blog yesterday. You really are a writer of the freaks and for that we thank you.

Dan Rafael
  (3:43 PM)

As I have told you before - I keep it real.

Gamma (Puerto Rico)

Do you think Juanma vs Gamboa or Juanma vs John or John vs Gamboa will happen next year?

Dan Rafael
  (3:44 PM)

I'm hopeful that at some point next year we see Lopez-Gamboa.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC Headquarter)

Dan all of us here at the WBC would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!....for a small sanctioning fee

Juan Manuel Marquez (Sledding Hill)

Boy that yellow snow is tempting...

Bert (Minneapolis)

Will Litzau get another HBO fight in 2011?

Dan Rafael
  (3:45 PM)

I would think he would. I know his name has come up for a fight with Gamboa.

Travis (NJ)

Dan, what is your favorite Christmas movie?

Dan Rafael
  (3:45 PM)

Elf.

J (ATL)

what are the purses for the bradley-alexander fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:46 PM)

Both guys getting a little over a million.

MC (USA)

hey dan is the feud between Shane and golden boy legit or just a publicity stunt?

Dan Rafael
  (3:47 PM)

I do not think its a PR stunt at all.

Guiller (Philippines)

title suggestion for the pac-mosley fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:48 PM)

Pacquiao vs. Mosley: A Big Pile Of Crap. Live on Pay-Per-View

TL (Hopedale, MA)

On the twelfth day of Christmas, Boxing gave to me...12 rounds of B-Hop, 11 Haye excuses, 10 Paulie's dancing, 9 Arum's yelling, 8 JMM glasses of pee, 7 Floyd felonies, 6 Holyfield challenges, 5 Lampley BANGS!!!!, 4 hour chats, 3 interim belts, 2 Manny knockouts, and only 1 Dan the Man!!!

Joey (Charleston, SC)

Is Pac-Shane the biggest backlash against a PPV card you've ever seen or have there been others?

Dan Rafael
  (3:52 PM)

I've seen plenty of PPV backlash. This is BY FAR the worst. BY FAR.

Joey (Houston)

So DTM, which KO is KO the yr? Sergio KO of Paul Williams or Canelo Alvarez KO on Baldomir?

Dan Rafael
  (3:53 PM)

You'll see next week when we roll out the annual awards.

Hayemaker (London)

the English fans would rather fancy I have a go at Danny Williams

Sam (London)

Dan, you summed it up in your blog - since when did losing and drawing in your last two fights earn you a fight with the p4p king? Absolute disgrace of a fight. By the time it comes around it will be more than 2 years since Mosley won!

Stephen (Tulsa)

Dan Rafael
  (3:54 PM)

Damn, Freaks are on a roll.

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

Dan, I'm really curious on your thoughts on which ppv sells more, Pacquiao v Marquez III or Pacquiao v Mosley. Obviously its all hypothetical, but I would still love to see you prediction!

Dan Rafael
  (3:56 PM)

I honestly believe at this point Pacquiao-Marquez would do about the same or more than Mosley.

Bert (Minneapolis)

Pacquiao - Mosely - Cause Floyd's in the Can

Guiller (Philippines)

What if Amir Khan has a rematch against his Colombian tormentor Breidis Prescott, now a jr. welterweight with a record of 23-2-0 KOs 19?

Dan Rafael
  (3:59 PM)

I'd have no issue with that fight whatsoever. I think it's more interesting that say a fight with Lamont Peterson, for example.

JD (NJ)

"Pac - Shane: A day late & a dollar short"

Dan Rafael
  (4:00 PM)

You mean a year late.

Michael Buffer (May 7th in Las Vegas)

I was happy to read about a possible Adamek-Peter matchup in today's huge notebook, because that seems to dispel the notion that Adamek will fight Roy Jones, right?

Dan Rafael
  (4:02 PM)

The Jones fight is not happening, according to Adamek's people.

Rags (NYC)

Pac-Mosley: You know the names at least....

Dan Rafael
  (4:02 PM)

Some of the titles you guys are sending in are hilarious!!

Dan Rafael
  (4:04 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for the great chat. Hope you chck out the notebook and blogs and news stories and updated rankings. Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and we'll do it again back at our normal time next week on Friday! Peace. Ho Ho Ho!
