Good afternoon, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. I spent my time in Glendale, Ariz., watching two great football teams set football back 50 years. Let's chat.
What free agents to look at for the cowboys?
Good question, but it's hard to say until we get the labor situation settled. There might be a good crop of defensive linemen available and we know St. Louis' O.J. Atogwe will be in the market place at safety. There might be over 400 free agents on the marketplace, so something good might happen for a few teams.
Sup bro...jus wondering ur take or inside knowledge on the Coaching decision to be made by Jerry Jones. I know its still early and won't be decided for a while but why won't Mr. Jones make a healthy change for the team and bring in someone like Gruden. He's not a Cowher so we won't have to worry about him trying to takeover every operation jus whip the team into shape and win some games it hurts to be a true fan. When we watch our off season wasted over and over.
Mark, It's not about finding a high profile coach. Jerry Jones has hired a high profile coach once, Bill Parcells. Wade Phillips, Dave Campo and Chan Gailey are not high profile guys, just guys who Jones thought was the right fit. Jerry Jones has to find the right fit for the Cowboys regardless of who it is.John Fox is a name that comes to mind as does Jeff Fisher. Fox most likely will get fired in Carolina and it seems Fisher is on his way out in Tennessee. Those are two names Jones should look at.
Is Mark Ingram a possibility for the Cowboys?
He's a good running back, but not sure if the Cowboys want to go in that direction when they have other needs. If the team lets Marion Barber go, he's due $500k roster bonus in June, going with Felix Jones and Tashard Choice isn't a bad thing.
Do you think that the Dallas Cowboys will beat the Philadelphia Eagles on January 2?
No. Take the Eagles in this one. As much as I like Stephen McGee, the Eagles defense will eat him up.
What needs will Dallas address in the 2011 NFL draft?
Offensive line, defensive line, secondary especially safety, quarterback and I wouldn't mind them finding another wide receiver.
Whats happenin Calvin? I was just wondering if you knew anything about the corners from LSU and Nebraska? It doesn't sound like there is a top-10 OL in the draft coming up . .
Both of those CBs are Top 10 picks. The offensive linemen are projected to go further down in the draft but it could change once the bowls heat up and pro days start kicking in. Some offensive linemen could move up in the first round based on these things.
The past few games, I have seen a different Gerald Sensabaugh. He is tougher and making some hard hits (as a safety should). Do you consider keeping him and getting him some help instead of Alan Ball at the other safety spot?
Sensabaugh is a free agent after the season and I would let him test the market to see what's out there. As for Ball, I thought he was turning the corner until I saw him Saturday night. I would try to replace both safeties if you can. Ball might be a restricted free agent based on the CBA so he might be here by default.
Jerry talked about Garrett's lack of experience on NFL Network before the game against the Cardinals and said the Cowboys can't afford to start slowly. He also said he's a big fan of doing something that's never been done before, and mentioned that no coach has ever won a Super Bowl with one team that won it with another. Tells me he's going with a Super Bowl winning coach. What you think?
When I saw that it gave me the impression he wasn't going to get a coach that won a Super Bowl with somebody else. John Fox and Jeff Fisher are two coaches who have never won a Super Bowl but I think are highly regarded within the organization. As I said before it's about finding the right fit. Wade Phillips was the best fit for the Cowboys after Bill Parcells. When Phillips was fired, Jason Garrett became the best fit for the Cowboys at this time. Jones is no different than any other owner. He wants to win a Super Bowl. Every year. He thought he could win it this year and his team will finish with double-digit losses.
Outside of McGee, did any of the young Cowboys (ex- Church, Lee, McCann, Brent, etc) do anything impressive or play well when given the opportunity?
Church and Brent have played pretty well and will be here next season. McCann showed flashes he can play on this level but he continues to bobble the football on returns, he had another one on Saturday night. Lee is somebody I like and believe he can start next season. He's physical and very smart, but at times he gets pushed around, like he did on a few run plays vs. the Cardinals.
will i be in a cowboy uniform next season
Sorry Marion, but no.
What do you think this loss does to Garrett's chances of becoming Head Coach in 11?
Not much because he is 4-3 and you have to look at the big picture when it comes to Garrett, not just the record. The roster will get some massive changes after the season and the team has to draft well and keep their draft picks on the field for an entire season instead of watching them on the sidelines nursing injuries. What they do to the roster will also have an impact on who the coach will be.
Calvi, great job reporting onthe Boys. Seems like you ESPN guys do a better job then their own web site, why is that?Question: Who out there is capable of coming in and being a DC for the Boys and can bring back intensity and competence?
Little disappointed in how the defense has performed the last three weeks. Secondary has been inconsistent and the pass rush is lacking in some areas. Guys are just not making plays. You have to find a 3-4 guy and Todd Grantham, the DC at the University of Georgia comes to mind. But Dom Capers would be a good choice, but he's got one year left on his deal. Todd Bowles, secondary coach with Miami Dolphins, is an interesting name too, but it's hard to say right now.
I believe we lack pressure defensively, the reason mike jenk and t-new are looking terrible is because qbs have all day to throw...how many sacks do we have this year?"??
The Cowboys have 30 sacks, which is seven fewer than they had at this stage last year. Pressure is not very good and that puts a strain on the corners. Newman has played pretty well but he does give up the big play now and then, likewise for Jenkins. His drop off has been sudden. It could be technique issues, over confidence, not sure what it is, but it's clear he's not the same player. The pass rush has to get better and Anthony Spencer hasn't been the same guy, nor has Jay Ratliff. He played with two bad elbows last season, took on double-teams and was still an effective nose tackle. This year he's healthy and still facing double-teams but not getting to the quarterback.Lots of players are not making the plays necessary to help the team win.
Hey Calvin!! In your opinion is Marc Colombo the most likely OL to get replaced in 2011?
I would like to see Sam Young get some time at right tackle on Sunday vs. the Eagles. Colombo's status is in doubt with the team. I would also say Kyle Kosier too. His contract is up and the team might go younger at left guard. Gurode and Davis have been average but I wouldn't give up on Davis.
looking back at most of the season are you surprised at all with the play of Dez Bryant?
Not really. Bryant is a fantastic player and once he learns the playbook he will develop into a outstanding receiver. It's all about taking the next step toward his development and its understanding the game. Once he does that, he will be nearly unstoppable. It reminds me of DeSean Jackson a little bit.
What current assistant coaches do you think will be retained if Garrett is named HC? Does it open the door for a new defensive coordinator?
I would say you need a new defensive coordinator. WR coach Ray Sherman is without a contract for next year but several assistant coaches are signed through 2011. You might need a new secondary coach but the other coaches can stay if Garrett is retained.
Calvin, we should trade roy for a db or pass rusher , also with all of the chargers unrestricted players on their team could jerry look their since they play a 3-4 defense too, ala cesaire, weddle.
You have no trade value for Williams. None so nobody is going to trade for him. Best thing to do is go in the draft and get a DB or pass rusher. Depending on the CBA the free agency period might have plenty of good players on it. So be patient and see what happens.
if both are available when they pick in the 2011 draft...who is more likely....Marcel Dareus DL ALabama or Patrick Peterson CB/S LSU?
I would take Peterson.
I like where your head is at around Atogwe. I wanted him this year. Is he worth a 3rd round pick?
No, just get him in free agency.
Can you see the Boys trading Miles Austin?
Miles Austin? Trade?No way. He's a keeper.
How much longer does M. Bennette get he has consistantly shown nothing on the field?
This will be an interesting season for Marty B. John Phillips is coming back from his torn ACL and if he does it will be a nice little battle between those two to back up Jason Witten.Bennett when given the chance does make some plays and he's a pretty smart player but the bottom line is he's got to practice and play with a consistency.
Will the Cowboys go out and get a more consistent kicker for the 2011 season with the missed extra point on Christmas night?
Yes, they need a kicker. Buehler is fine on kickoffs. But here's the issue. Whoever the next coach is, does that guy want to waste two roster spots on the kicker position. Wade Phillips did in 2009, but not sure if it happens again in 2011.
Which offensive starters are gone at the end of the year? My guess is Marion and Roy.
That's a good way to start, how about two or three new offensive linemen. Colombo, Kosier and Davis or Gurode could be gone. Kosier is in the last year of his deal.
You sound like a Jerry apologist. If I wrong I'll be 1st in line to eat my humble pie, but I say the Cowboys never win another SB until he and his sons focus on the business side and hire someone to run the football operations. Scott Pioli would have been a great hire.
Jerry has won three Super Bowls doing it this way. Right? Three? Right?
How will the uncertianty of the current CBA effect the nfl draft?
The draft is going to be held regardless of the CBA.
I was looking at the standings and the boys potentially are up for a top 8 or so pick? Any potential for Jerry making some plays to get a top 3 or top 5 pick instead?
If the Cowboys draft in the Top 10, they should stay there and not trade down or up. Just get the best player available.
What is all this talk about drafting a back up QB? Don't we need to get as many OL as possible to protect me?
Yes, Tony they do need to protect you but you're going to be 31 next year and QBs after they turn 30 go downhill. It's time to find your replacement.
Let's assume the labor situation and coaching staff are settled before training camp. With the addition of free agent needs and a good draft, are there enough quality players on this team to make a SB run next year? I know that is alot of if's,but is this team just too far away to rebound in a year?
There are some good pieces on this team, Ware, Ratliff, Jenkins, Spencer, Felix Jones, Free, Bryant and Lee are quality pieces to build a team around. And don't forget you got Bradie James, a quality veteran a solid punter in Mat McBriar and two young safeties in McCann and Church who could give you something down the line. Just don't mess up in the draft and free agency and you might become a contender again.
I can see Fisher as head coach, but John Fox? I know Jerry has a strong relationship with Fox, but I can't see him as head coach, maybe DC under Garrett. Do you think that's possible?
I don't think John Fox will be a DC under Garrett.
Teams are expecting Barber to get cut...should we expect a draft day trade and what kinda value does he have?
None. Let him go prior to the draft. Move on.
Do you think roy williams is going to be released after the season?
I asked someone in the organation that question a few weeks ago and they said no. But who knows?
I know they won't do it but what do you think Romo's trade value is in terms of draft picks? Could they trade Romo and the 6th pick for #1 and then draft Luck?
That's an interesting trade, but if you do that it sends a message you're rebuilding and I don't think the Cowboys are in that mode. Keep Romo and build around him.
Was Roy Williams really benched Saturday night?
I think the Cowboys were playing with mainly two tight end sets and a fullback with McGee in the game until he got settled in. I don't believe Williams was benched. I just think it was about the matchups the team wanted.
any chance we sign mankins?
Maybe. Depends on the price and if he really wants to stay in New England.
"Jerry has won three Super Bowls doing it this way. Right? Three? Right?"I believe everybody credits Jimmy Johnson for those Super Bowls, don't you?
Jerry Jones should get some credit right?
Should I bring my marker incase sumone else from Dallas want an autograph?
Yeah. Maybe Miles Austin wants it this time. After the Arizona game Austin and Larry Fitzgerald exchanged jerseys. No big deal. I didn't think the Choice thing was a big deal either.
Guys take and have a great New Year.
