Chat with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (10:59 AM)

Good morning gang --- time to ring out 2010 with one last hour of fantasy chattage. Rest assured my New Years resolution will NOT involve coffee in any way. Second cup firmly in hand. Who is up first?

German Velez (Texas)

would you say Jammal chrles Will play 60 minutesthank you

AJ Mass
  (11:00 AM)

He rarely does "play 60" anyway, given the time-share with TJ. The matchup is solid enough that if he ends up "playing 30" he could still get tons of points before we see the likes of Tim Castille.

Steven B (Atlanta, GA)

Week 17 Championship...Which QB to start? Brady, Tebow, Hill, or Grossman. Thanks. Playing in 4 out of 4 league championships thanks to you guys at ESPN.

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

I like Tebow. Yes, there's a chance the Chargers come to play, but I doubt it. If they check out, expect a huge day from Tim.

Chip (NC)

Hi AJ- Dynasty league rules question: We have a 20 player roster and a $250 salary cap. Currently, if a player is placed on IR, the owner gets to roster another player and they get extra cap $ (the value of the remaining part of that player's contract). I think the owner should get the roster spot but not the cap space. What say you? Thanks for all your help this year!

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

Either way is fine with me, so long as the league as a whole is on board and understands the rule.

Steven (SoCal)

Giants D or 49r's??

AJ Mass
  (11:04 AM)

I'm looking SF way. Giants will be using newly-signed KR, so don't expect much in the way of ST scores... and 49ers are looking to put a solid performance on film for the new coaching staff to peruse in the off-season.

J.B. (PA)

AJ: First thanks for the year of informative and entertaining chats. They've been a big help to me. I know what the projections are but I want your opinion here. Do you think Danny Woodhead is a viable option over BJGE for the 2nd half of the championship this weekend in a PPR league?

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

In PPR, yes. I think the odds are more that the Pats *if* they decide to rest folks, rest Woodhead before Lawfirm, but no promise they rest anyone.

Chris (SC)

AJ, thanks for your great advice this year. Chance it with Maclin, or play it safer with either Mason, Boldin or Bess (PPR league)? Thanks.

AJ Mass
  (11:07 AM)

Personally, I think Maclin plays at least a half... but I'd probably go with Mason, due to the fact he's shooting for a "milestone" -- two catches gets him 60 for the 11th straight season. Only two others have ever done that.

dave (home)

its looking like colston wont play and johnson is iffy.should i use both jacoby jones and daniels in their place?

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

I can't imagine AJ playing. Colston, at most, plays just a series or two. Definitely a week for the subs.

Rick (Chicago)

Happy New Year AJ. Looking ahead to next year, do you think Choice is good enough to be the #1 running back in Dallas?

AJ Mass
  (11:09 AM)

Good enough? Absolutely. Going to get the shot? Highly doubtful.

J.B. (PA)

Thanks for the answer but it looks kind of confusing. You say Woodhead is more likely to be rested than Lawfirm but you'd take Woodhead over Lawfirm in a PPR. If it isn't too much to ask, would you please explain?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

Woodhead is more valuable to Pats than BJGE. I simply don't think the Pats will rest anyone (at least not until 4th) but they could, so be aware there's a risk here.

Dennis (MO)

Garcon or Lance Moore for the win?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

With the news on Colston, I'm going Lance's way.

jt (coffee shop)

Flex help standard league, harvin, torain or Westbrook? Thank-you

AJ Mass
  (11:12 AM)

Westbrook. If Favre doesn't play, then I actually would consider Harvin -- with Rice out -- but I don't love that offense at all.

Toby (LA)

Need one: Mike Williams(Sea), Jacoby Jones, Danario Alexander, or Anthony Armstrong? non-ppr

AJ Mass
  (11:13 AM)

Jacoby this week with no AJ. Redskins vs G-Men is a poor matchup, especially if the Packers score pipes in early with Chicago in the lead. Danario too up and down. Whitehurst to BMW? Not going to place my title hopes on that one.

Joe (NY)

Jets or Rams D/ST this week AJ? Im goin into Week 17 up 18 points in the championship. Or would you like SF or DET better?

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

I like the Jets over the Rams, but given the meaninglessness of their game, I'd rather have what I think will be a motivated SF team against the not-so-great AZ offense.

Chris (SC)

Hillis got me to the championship, but I have to play J Stewart over him this week, right? Thanks.

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

The multiple missed practices certainly has to give you pause...

Ray (Oakland)

Can you pick one from Manningham, Mike Thomas, Meachem and Woodhead?

AJ Mass
  (11:17 AM)

Got to go with Mario, especially since Nicks is all but toast. Thomas can't be counted on thanks to the Dread Trent Edwards.

Joe (NY)

Thanks AJ!!! Have a happy New Year thanks for all the help this year!

AJ Mass
  (11:17 AM)

And to all of you as well, Joe. It's a two-way street and without the questions coming in, this is just me talking to myself, or what I call "Thursday".

Andy (Mass)

Happy New Year! Do you like Pierre Thomas over Jennings for a flex?

AJ Mass
  (11:19 AM)

No -- Saints won't have a lot to play for and a guy like Julius Jones could well get some touches... and although I wouldn't play Ivory at all, I think they might.

Dave (Tampa)

Even if the Chargers sleepwalk this week, the egomaniacal Rivers should want to outshine Tebow, making him a strong start, yes?

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

Absolutely. Rivers goes out in a blaze of glory, though let's look at Denver -- they are more vulnerable to the run, so Mathews should blow it up as well...

Doc (Denver)

pick one: Keller or Boss....nonppr

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

Boss. Nicks' absence will require a lot more of Boss. Plus at some point in the first half, Sanchez will sit. Brunell to Keller? Meh.

Sheila (Houston)

jacobs over bradshaw? last time vs WASH they both did well

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

I think they both do well again, but Jacobs has done slightly better at protecting the ball, so he's the *safer* play.

Shannon (New Orleans)

Does Brees play the whole game or should I start Freeman?

AJ Mass
  (11:23 AM)

I don't like Freeman at all this week. Brees certainly plays 3-1/2 IMO -- gosh I hate Week 17... too much mind-reading required -- and is my choice.

Sidney (Orlando)

Jets DST over Lions DST?

AJ Mass
  (11:25 AM)

Yes... especially if Ryan Fitzpatrick is out, which is looking more likely.

Steve (ND)

I'm going up against A Foster and A Peterson this week. Should I go check out the baseball rankings?

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

You should, since Tristan worked so hard to make them. (The big ESPN MLB powwow is in late January where we all get to chime in!) But never give up!

Chris (NY)

Cooley or Tamme this week? Seem to always be starting the wrong guy week to week...

AJ Mass
  (11:27 AM)

That's why you should (in general) pick one guy and stick with him... I LOVE Cooley this week, and I don't imagine he'll ever have a case of the dropsies like he did in Week 16.

Its Pat (Phx, Az)

Hey AJ, stating you think the chargers might send it in on sun, what are your expectations of Rivers and V-jax? Happy new years!

AJ Mass
  (11:28 AM)

Defensively, I do... but Philip can't turn it off. He and V-Jax go nuts. Would not be all that surprised to see a 200 yard day from Jackson.

Bill (NY)

Which 3 out of Austin, Wallace, Harvin, Bowe?

AJ Mass
  (11:29 AM)

Bowe and Wallace start for sure. I'd go Austin over Harvin, but only because I have Percy in many leagues and simply have been burned so many times before. McGee will certainly look Miles' way.

John (NYC)

Sit 1: Britt, Bradshaw, Jennings

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

If one has to sit, I lean to Britt.

Sidney Flugelbinder (Norwalk, CT)

What are your projections for Ellsbury this season?

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

I haven't yet dusted off that crystal ball yet, but with CC in town, he's no longer as high on the list as he was last season.

Sidney (Orlando)

Hey AJ, how can you say the Saints won't have anything to play for? They still have a shot at a bye don't they?

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

Technically, you're right. However with Carolina over Atlanta being a requirement for that to happen, I just don't see it. As soon as the out-of-town board reads "ATL 24-6 Half" guess what? Nothing to play for.

Dan (Syracuse)

Who are your top 5 in this years' basebal draft?

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

Very early still, but right now my board reads: Albert, Carl, Doc, CarGo and Miggy.

Steve (SF)

Do you believe in ghosts?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

I don't discount the possibility, but I don't believe one can track down proof by inviting plumbers into your dark house.

Jeff (cubicle)

schaub, still top 5 this week without AJ? Vick owner here

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

Close enough -- more like 8th.

Rich (Weymouth,MA)

asking everyone to try to confirm my own thoguhts and don't make a last mintue change on sunday... Eliminator! I'm 1 of 5 left out of 890. Best Options are BUF/NYJ, STL/SEA, SF/ARI, Chi, Hou, Det, Was, Oak, Mia, Den, Was, Car, Cin. Who would you put 17-0 on. Thanks for your opinion! (can use all teams listed)

AJ Mass
  (11:39 AM)

After some thought, Jets.

TAPS (RI)

Oh no you didn't!

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

Oh yes I did, Grant.

Chris (NY)

Bench Fitzgerald for V-Jax or Britt?

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

For V-Jax no doubt. Not for Kenny.

Charlie (Idaho)

I'd make Addai a top-10 RB this week, what are your thoughts?

AJ Mass
  (11:42 AM)

Not enough touches... Peyton will do this himself if it is to get done. And if the game gets lopsided, expect more Dominic late than Joseph.

Disco (Chicago)

Jerome Simpson another big day or 1 hit wonder?

AJ Mass
  (11:43 AM)

Even spread between Shipley, Simpson and Caldwell -- but he'll get his.

Donald (Vermont)

Off the top of your head, who has a better fantasy year in 2011: Jesus Montero or, say, Russell Martin? Follow up: an off-the-top-of-your-head stat line for the year for said better fantasy player. THANKS!

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

Montero more than Martin... no stats just yet... try me next week when I can put some thought into it.

Mike (Don't know)

Bradford over Brees? It's a must win for him compared to Brees right?

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

I don't think that really enters into it - I mean if Brees plays, he certainly tries his best regardless -- however I do like Sam a tad given he at least has all his available weapons at his disposal.

Mike (San Diego)

So, AJ, do you really think Rivers plays more than a half? Last meaningless Bolts game, Brees got injured...badly. Think they really risk that happening again?

AJ Mass
  (11:47 AM)

Wow! Talk about playing scared! If he gets hurt bad enough to miss Week 1 in 2011, it's a fluke play that could just as easily happen in Week 4 Exhibition 2011. No worries.

Bob (Seattle)

MJD..Does he play?

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

I don't think he plays much. Garrard is out and the odds are this one gets away from them early if MJD is not 100 percent.

Frank (NY)

What are your thoughts on Pedro Alvarez's keeper value?

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

Not super high on him for 2011, and there are 3B options with much better track records...

Steve (ND)

We keep one pitcher. Should it be Kershaw from round 18 or Latos from round 27?

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

Kersahw's an 11th Rounder for me. Latos 20th. Pretty even in terms of "bargain" -- so I'd lean to Clayton.

Kathy (PA)

Do you like Flacco over Brady, given that Flacco's more likely to play the entire game?

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

No. When was the last time the Pats sat players? I'm not saying it can't or won't happen -- but I don't think it will -- it's not how Bill rolls.

Dagmar (Chicago)

Francisco Liriano: Top 10 SP in 2011?

AJ Mass
  (11:52 AM)

Top 25 yes. Top 10? Not quite.

Jt (sammich shop)

AJ, do you like Westbrook over torain? I would think torain gets the most touches...

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

It's real close... plus there's the Dixon factor. The "new coach" in SF also adds a bit of mystery and uncertainty to the mix. I'd go Torain because of that, but I do think Westbrook has a very good chance of outscoring him.

Ken Brehm (Hot Springs Village, AR)

On the Pinstripe Bowl, since the Kansas State unsportsman like conduct happened after the touch down, shouldn't the pennalty be assesed on the kick off and not to void the touch down?

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

It didn't void the TD... it was enforced on the XP. I think the defense should have the option on that one, though I'm not sure what the rule is. Either way, refs should have kept flag in pocket.

B (Seattle)

Optimal number of keepers in a FF league is ___?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

For me, one full starting lineup.

JEFF (SUPER BOWL BABY!!)

Forget baseball!! Some of us still have games to win!! How do you like Rothelisberger?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

Just whetting the appetite, Jeff. Easy, tiger. Ben gets his usual 200 and a score.

Greg (Zona)

If you were the Arizona Cardinals, would you draft: Ryan Mallet, Cam Newton, Jake Locker or trade for Kevin Kolb?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

I would draft Carimi or Solder, and see if Skelton can manage the team for a season.

Astrid (Next to a cow)

With Fringe moving towards Fridays, is this the end for me, Walter, Peter, & Olivia?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

X-Files was able to survive. Why not Broyles and Friends?

Mike (Tampa)

Celek or Owen Daniels?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

Owen for me.

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

That's the dropping of the proverbial ball! Thanks to all for a terrific season of chats and good luck to those still playing. We'll be back in 2011 and the baseball brain will be on display... until then, there's always the Twitter. HAPPY NEW YEAR! and we'll Be Seeing You!
