Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the final chat of 2010 and my record 60th chat of the year! Let's make it a Freakathon! Make sure you check out all the award-winner stories that have been running all week -- fighter, fight, round, prospect and knockout of the year. Lots to discuss and some big fights coming up. Let's get to it!

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Dan, great to see my 3 favourite fighters, Khan, Froch and Burns all in runner-up fights of the year. Any news on a date for Froch-Johnson?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

All three did some great things in 2010. They all deserved it for the excellent fights they were in. Froch-Johnson, the Super Six semi, is likely for around March but no set date yet.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Happy New Year to all the Freaks around the world.

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Except Bing and those who were banished!

Steve (CT)

Happy new year king freak! this morning my girlfriend asked me to go shopping with her for a dress for tonight...i told her i had to go into work to finish things up....i actually just wanted to join your chat in peace! freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Sure why not, I'm in a good mood.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, has Soto vs. Antillon 2 been added to the undercard of Pacquiao vs. Mosley on May 7th?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Not yet. It is one possibility for that card. I hope they work it out. Antillon, I am told, needs nose surgery, but hoepfully he will be ready for the fight in May.

Ray (Dearborn, MI)

Dan, I'm going to be at Bradley/Alexander...I'm going to stop by and say hi

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Cool, but no stalking please.

jcs (winnipeg, Canada)

Happy New Year, Dan! the fight year ended on a series of high notes so let's hope all the players work together to make 2011 a knock out.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

It did. It's just too bad most of the first eight months sucked so bad.

Scott (Staten Island)

Happy New Year Dan..... finally saw Soto-Antillon......good choice for FOY

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Glad you saw it. I know it was on a small PPV but it was a terrific fight and really good show overall. I rewatched a bunch of the contenders over the past few past days and I kept coming back to Soto-Antillon. It was definitely the best fight I saw in 2010.

Dizzle (SoCal)

I think Mares-Perez was better than Mares-Vic. Your thoughts

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I didnt see it like that although both fights made my year-end list, which is on the boxing page today (and the fights are in order of my preference).

Paul (Carlow)

Dan, I saw in your review of Martinez Williams 2 that Martinez a southpaw cannot throw a left hook. He can only throw a left cross. Why can't a south paw throw a left hook. I am curious. Pardon my ignornace. Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

It's not that a southpaw "can't throw" a left hook. But generally if he's in a southpaw stance at the time he throws the punch he can't. A hook comes from the other side. So a left throws a right hook and a left cross. A righty throws a left hook and a right cross.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, do you have any interest in seeing a Yuri Foreman vs. Sergio Mora fight, or would you rather see Paul Spadafora vs. Paulie Malignaggi (get out the featherdusters!)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I'd rather injure myself than see either.

Jude (Cleveland)

Is there anyone who can dethrone the Klitschkos?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

The other Klitschko.

justin carroll (cincinnati, oh)

do you think joshua clottey can be a factor at 154?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Only if he throws punches. But I do think he can compete at 154.

Farrel (nj)

Do you know when and who Pawel Wolak will be fighting next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Not at this point.

jonathan (los angeles)

what possible opponents do you see for marquez? i think he's done enough in lightweight and should move up. i dont see erik morales as a viable opponent simply because he's not what he was and i look at it as a step back for marquez.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Golden Boy will likely move forward with an April fight between Marquez and Erik Morales.

GutterDandy (Brooklyn)

Beatdown of the Year: Vitali - Briggs or Pacman - Margarito?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Both were brutal, but I gotta go with Vitali-Briggs. That was a worse beating to me. Briggs was in the hospital for days.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Happy New Year, Dan Solo! Have you heard anything on the reporting of a possible Marquez-Morales fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Yes, as I wrote weeks ago, that was the fight likey for Marquez if Pacquiao wouldn't fight him. Golden Boy is working on it.

Jorge (NY)

If Cotto vs Margarito 2 happens when and where? Whats your take on that rematch?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Target date is June 11 and likely at the MGM in Las Vegas, although Top Rank will also look at the Meadowlands, but I sorta doubt that will come off.

Tom (UK )

Happy New Year Dan, can you rank your 2nd and 3rd prospects of the year for us please.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Other than the winner, Saul Alvarez, the rest of the list is alphabetical. But when it came down to deciding THE winner I really agonized. It came down to Alvarez and David Lemieux. The third guy in my mind was Mikey Garcia. The only other guys I seriously considered as possible winners were Erislandy Lara and James DeGale.

Scott (Staten Island)

It was a good choice, but my FOY was Sergio knocking Paul Williams into next March. Someone finally shut his yap about being ducked.

Ethers (England)

Simple question - Will there be a boxing card at MSG or New York on March 12th due to Cotto fighting on same date???

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Yes, that is the date Sergio Martinez is going to fight.

Julio (DFW)

Can Manny Stewart really turn Chad Dawson into a KO fighter? Seems since his first fight with Johnson he turned it down a bit.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I think Emanuel can remind Chad that he does have offensive ability and Manny will help bring that out of him. And if the rematch with Pascal comes off remember this -- I believe Manny is undefeated in rematches.

Brian (Penn State)

Did Main Events win the purse bid for Judah/Mabuza?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Yes. Here is my story: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=5974095

Sean (Bronx)

What other weight division could use a tournament ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Well we have a nice one at bantam and super middle. We're about to get one at cruiser. We have a de facto one going on at 140. I think one at 126 would be great with guys like Lopez, Gamboa, John, Garcia, Rojas, Hasegawa, etc... would be sweet.

Carlos (Gilroy, CA)

Dan, if Foreman got healthy, you wouldn't want to see Cotto-Foreman II? That knee halted a good fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

No need whatsoever. Even without the injury, Yuri was losing in a one-sided(albeit entertaining) fight. No point or demand for a rematch at all.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

OB Wan DANobi, who do you like better in a breakthrough year, Brandon Rios or Dmitry Pirog? Both destroyed tough opponents to get where they are now.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Both worthy but I lean to Pirog a little more.

luis (philadelphia)

I have no instrest in watching margacheato fight anymore I rather pay to watch holyfield next fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Well you can do that on Jan. 22 for just $29.95 when Holyfield fights Tank Williams on PPV! (feel the sarcasm).

ron (philly)

what is robbery of the year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

There are a few. I would say Shumenov-Campillo 2 and Lazarte-Solis off the top of my head.

bill (pgh)

Is it just me or should Edouard be favored to beat Peter Manfredo?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

It's you.

Omar (London)

First and Last time for 2009 Dan i Thought i'd mention a certain lovechild...........

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Julio (DFW)

chances we see any Klitschko fighting Haye in 2011?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I am optimistic.

Andy (England, UK)

I was glad to see DeGale get considered by you for prospect of the year. Do you see him as a world titlest in the next few years, in a division which has a strong field?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

DeGale is a good fighter and has improved in 2010. I have seen every one of his pro fights and I believe his style has become more polished and professional. He has done a good job of shedding some of the amateur ways it seems to me.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan,Pretty good picks all around for the end-of-the-year awards. The one choice I was puzzled by was the Klitschko vs Chambers KO as #2 KO of the year. Especially after watching your Twitter link to the Top 10 KO's of the Year on YouTube.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

They're all opinions. I considered the magnitude of the fight as well so when the heavyweight champion of the world absolutely destroys a No. 1 contender with a single punch and knocks him out cold in such an amazing scene (laying face down over the bottom rope) it jacks me up, what can I say. The fight stunk out loud but the knockout was as pretty as they come in a very significant fight.

Patrick (Ireland)

Dan I am glad you raised HBO's very poor behaviour towards Andy Lee on your Twitter. It is always the good ones that get messed about. Is Andy definitely out of the running for the March 12th slot?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Andy is out of the running for the Martinez fight, but if everything works out, he will fight on the March 12 Sergio undercard with HBO showing clips of his fight -- if everything works out. Emanuel will be with Cotto that night in Vegas and not in Andy's corner, but he will be with him throughout training camp.

Mary-Grace (Tulsa)

Dan, you have covered boxing better than anyone I have ever read. As far as a play by play man and color commentator, who do you favor? I love Max Kellerman on color and Steve Albert on play by play.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

A lot of those TV guys are my friends so I am a bit close to it. But I have come to appreciate Steve much more after he was replaced by Gus Johnson. I have been happy to see him back on Showtime filling in sometimes. He's a true pro (and a genuinely great guy). Max has grown into his role over the past few years, but again -- I'm biased. Max has been a good friend for many years. We both came on the national scene around the same time (him on FNF and me at USA Today) and we have always supported each other in a tough business. I am also a big fan of Lampley and Merchant on HBO, as anyone who reads these chats knows. I think Joe Tessitore is vastly underrated as a blow-by-blow guy. Teddy is not everyone's cup of tea but he knows the Xs and Os better than anyone I've ever heard. His fight plans are genius. I also think Steve Farhood, another friend, doesn't get the credit he deserves. And although he doesn't get as much airtime these days, Rich Marotta is a very good and a real boxing guy. Tarver on Showtime has also become a superstar announcer in very short order.

Ray (NYC)

Dan, How about the upcoming Donaire fight? what do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Love it. Best small-guy fight you can make right now. Thrilled HBO decided to buy the fight.

Alex (San Diego)

I didn't see Rigondeaux on your prospect list, do you no longer consider him a prospect or did you think he wasn't worthy of making the list?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

If a guy wins a world title, he's not longer considered.

Ernest (Saginaw)

Will Fernando Vargas come out of retirement and fight this year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I hope not.

Adam (DuPage)

After your recent twitter exchange with Oscar, where do you stand on Mannix's prediction that De la Hoya-Hatton happens in 2011?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Not happening.

Lee (Salisbury, MD)

Nice picks on the year end awards Dan. Just curious, what's your choice for fight of the decade? Just my opinion, I gotta go with Chico vs J.L.C (R.I.P Chico)

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Corrales-Castillo for sure.

Curtis (Lexington)

Dan, other than Pac-Mayweather or Klitschko-Haye, give me one must-see fight for 2011.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

How about Ward-Bute (assuming the keep winning)? Or Lopez-Gamboa.

David (Houston)

I was thinking the other day about how Jeff Lacy was never ever the same after taking the beatdown from Joe C. Can you shoot a couple other examples off the top of your head where a fighter was never the same after a beatdown like that? Say the last decade or so...

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

The most famous one is probably Meldrick Taylor after BEATING Chavez. I would say also Tyson after Douglas too.

Dan Rafael (ESPN security gate)

Do you know who the f*** I am? Let me in to my f***ing chat. This is my own chat man!!! This is bull****!

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Legendary.

liam (Bolton)

Hey dan any news on Khans next opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Nothing specific yet. Most folks in the industry are on vacation and it's been slow since Christmas. Things will get rolling again with stuff like that in the next week or two.

Troy (NYC)

Dan, saw you on ESPN following the Pac-Mosley announcement. Just wondering, did you OD on caffeine that day?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

No.

Carlos (Gilroy, CA)

Eli DANning, do you consider Tor Hamer a legit heavy prospect?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Not really.

Kyon (St. Louis)

I hope Khan fights Prescott again

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I agree. I hope so too.

Bobby (New York)

Vargas after Trinidad?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Defintely. That's also a good one.

Mike (Pa)

Will Judah fight in Newark and will it be on HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Judah's fight is supposed to be in Newark but if HBO is not interested in the Mabuza fight at this point. If Judah-Mabuza happens it will probably be a small PPV card.

Oscar De La Hoya (GBH)

I'm too busy on twitter to fight again. Chhhhhhhhooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

LOL!

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, I know Top Rank and Golden Boy are at odds now, but what do you think the chances are that Juan Manuel Marquez and Humberto Soto will fight soon? I'd love to see that fight!

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Zero.

Chris (NJ)

Even though he won the fight, Camacho was never the same after Rosario...

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Also a good example. I would also go with Corrales and Castillo after their first fight. Neither were ever the same.

shawn (clevland)

dan on behalf of the freaks just wanted to say thank u

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Thanks.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, completely agree with your analysis of Teddy Atlas. He is sure not my cup of tea but love to listen to him talk Xs and Os and his fight plans ARE genius. Especially because it gives the casual fan something to watch for during the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Exactly.

Raul (Whittier)

RIP "BAD" BENNIE BRISCOE.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Good call.

Joe (NJ)

A little advise for the freaks out there. If you start to see more then one Ricky Hatton tonight, you've had to much to drink.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

An excellent tip from a Freak, because we all know there's only ONE Ricky Hatton!

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

FNF next Friday. Can't wait!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

It's baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack! WOOOOOOOOOOO!

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Now that you're done with all of the End of-the-Year awards and Boxing is somewhat on a short vacation.....I was wondering how many fights do you actually watch in a year? Whether it be live, DVR'ed, or dvd.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I have absolutely no idea. Has to be many hundreds at least. I've literally watched every single American televised card, hundreds of fights live in the arena that are not on TV and hundreds more on DVD not to mention rewatching others on TV or DVD that I have already seen. It's scary. I mean for crying out loud, I was watching a DVD of a freakin Pongsaklek fight in Thai at like 2 am the other night.

LeRoy Nieman (The Art World)

I was going to put Paul Williams' face on canvas, but he beat me to it!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Rafa (London)

Don't see the point of Khan - Prescott. Amir will completely outclass him for a shutout or late stoppage. Just because he lost to him before, doesn't mean it's worthwhile. Utterly pointless fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

It's not pointless. The fans there would want to see it and it would generate money. And we can say what we THINK will happen but we need to SEE it. When you get knocked out that badly a rematch is important to set the record straight. There is no reason that fight should not happen next considering Khan is fighting in England in a fight that is admitedly a sort of stay-busy fight. NOTHING wrong with that fight, especially with Khan coming off such a rough one with Maidana.

David (Houston)

I personally also enjoy Al Bernstein's commentary and gotta love Steve Farhood taking us behind the numbers.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Al is also outstanding. He's very good at explaining the basics of boxing in a way that is enjoyable and easy to understand and he doesn't take himself too seriously, which I appreciate.

Sergio Martinez (Oxnard, CA)

I think all belts should be replaced with crowns! Where can I get a Burger King endorsement?

Jackie (Detroit)

Great call on Saul Canelo as prospect of the year, who do you see him getting in the ring with as his first real test of 2011?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Could be Matthew Hatton. Alvarez is supposed to fight March 5 on HBO.

carlos (houston, tx)

happy new year DTM!!! great articles on your ESPN picks of the year.....what's the % that a promoter gets from the fighter?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Every deal is different.

Kyon (St. Louis)

Hey Dan, what do you think about Shawn Porter vs Keith Thurman in a battle of unbeaten welterweight prospects

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Would be an interesting fight. Thurman is a lot taller I think, but while Thurman has good offensive skills from what I have seen his chin is not good.

National Assoc. of Boxing Freaks (World)

#1 Boxing Writer of 2010---- Dan Rafael#1 BOxing Chatter of 2010--- Dan "The Man" Rafael#1 Boxing Tweeter of 2010--- Dan "Danimal" RafaelOverall, Lineal Boxing Guru of 2010 DAN RAFAEL!Oh yea...and WBC Champion Boxing Writer of the World, DAN RAFAEL!!!! (For a small sanctioning fee of course!)

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

You are too kind.

Jackie (Detroit)

Dan, you define the way boxing is covered on the internet and I pay you mad respect for your dedication and integrity to the sport. How do you manage to balance providing an objective stance in your article while mantaining friendships with the main players in boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

It is not easy I can tell you that. One thing is important -- you have to stay true to yourself and just write what you believe in terms of commentary and write the facts as best as you know them in a news story. I know I can be harsh on some people but those same people I have also been kind to. In other words, folks in this business might not always agree with me (and what fun would it be if they did?) but I think I have earned the respect of most people in the business because they know I write without an agenda and without anyone else telling me what to write. I know when I write certain things it will really piss some people off. But that just goes with the territory and you hope the people wont hold it against you forever. If they do, so be it. Just gotta keep it real, as I say. If you do that, everything usually works out.

Justin (Denver)

Any word yet on the televised undercard for Holyfield/Williams?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Don't know. Actually don't care! :)

Steve (Bay Area, CA)

Is Cotto-Mayorga official or could Martirosyan still land the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

It's not official, but it's been verbally agreed to from what I am told. They're doing the contracts.

Braindamaged2too (the Asylum)

Dan-Da-Man,A warning to all the freaks who will be out celebrating this New Year's Eve. If you're at a party and someone offers you a "Margarito" to drink.....be very careful. It's usually loaded with an unnamed, unsanctioned ingredient. Same thing for a special JMM "lemonade" drink!

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

More sound Freak advice for those of us who plan to have a few beverages this evening.

Kyon (St. Louis)

COTTO VS BERTO

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Would love to see it. Not going to happen at this point.

todd (sf, calif)

is angulo quietly throwing away his career? from what it sounds like, he's lost touch with shaw and has zilch on the horizon. i understand he can't fight in the us, but how about knocking a few tijuana cab drivers stiff in mexico to stay busy?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

He can't fight without permission from his promoter, Gary Shaw. So there is not small Mexican fight without his approval and since Perro is not speaking to Gary it's hard to make a fight. He is wasting his career and is just not being smart about it.

Gil (NYC)

You and Mannix getting heated or just good debate amongst friends?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Just pure spirited fun between friends. I actually direct messaged him the other day after some of our back and forth to joke with him that we were having a Twitter war!

Jim Lampley (Las Vegas)

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Naturally.

Rich (Maplewood, NJ)

Given the bogus matches Top Rank has put together lately, could Bob Arum's greed and ego be singlehandedly stunting the progress of boxing as a whole?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

It is unfair to label Top Rank matches as bogus. Sure Arum annoys the crap out of me with some of his fights (Pac-Mosley for example) but they have put on tons of great fights. You might have noticed that Top Rank put on the 2010 fight of the year.

Justin (Denver)

Where does The Fighter rank among your fave boxing movies? What's the best boxing movie most people have never seen?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I have not seen it yet but might go this weekend.

Rich (Evanston)

What exactly has Mayorga done to deserve a crack at Cotto? Your thoughts? This can't be the best matchup that Cotto can get

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Mayorga has done nothing except get knocked out in his last two 154 fights.

Ryan (Youngstown)

Dan, will Berto likely take the mandatory with Aydin now that Pac Man is out of the picture?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

No idea. I don't think HBO is much interested in that fight but I will say this -- it would be Berto's most legit opponent since Collazo.

JD (NJ)

Zbik is not a bad opponent. What is HBO looking for in opponents exactly? They don't showcase many 160 fighters...so the general public is not likely to know the best guys anyway.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

I agree that Zbik is not a bad opponent. His crime is he is not known and when HBO watched tapes of him they determined that he did not make fan-friendly fights. But here's what I don't get -- they won't take Zbik, the mandatory, but HBO is forcing Dzinziruk, who is also not a really fan friendly fighter and he is smaller and equally as unknown in the US. So I don't get what the hell goes on at HBO either. Sometimes they just think too much.

Caswell (The Woodlands, TX)

Hi Dan, thanks for a great year of chats! In your opinion, which would have been the sicker fight, Marcos Maidana v. Arturo Gatti at 140, or Maidana v. Ricardo Mayorga at 147?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Maidana-Gatti would be sick.

Bime (Taunton Ma)

Dansome- you got Demitrius Andrade as one of you poy. you wrote they planning on fighting him six times this yr. Are they planning on stepping him up in those six fights, seems like he's been a bunch of stiffs

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I would hope so. For an elite prospect, Andrade has fought utterly horrible competition. I understand being careful and seasoning a guy but the guys he fights are shameful.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, I couldn't agree more with your comments regarding Steve Farhood. Listening to Steve you can tell not only is he a knowledgible student of the sweet science and a fan but he respects the viewer as well. He explains his thoughts and opinions w/o the ego trip I've seen from others! Does he have any other Boxing related stuff he does outside of his too infrequent Showtime appearences? Thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Farhood also writes regulary for Boxing Monthly in England and does some other TV work on shows like DiBella's Broadway Boxing. I also spent part of my morning trying to convince him to join Twitter. I think I made some progress.

Josh (Laptop)

What is your bravest performance of the year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I give Briggs a lot of credit for taking all he did against Vitali and same with Margarito for the whupping he took from Pacquiao.

Jeff (Newark)

Dantalizing, any chance we could see you as a regular on Friday Night Fights? It would be awesome!

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I'll be on the show this season again.

Kevin (CT)

Thanks Dan for a wonderful year of boxing coverage. I stumbled on this chat earlier this year and havent missed one since...Its great for me since none of my friends are freaks....don't worry, im trying to convert them, made them watch gatti-ward 1 before we went to see the fighter!

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Convert them! Invite them over for good TV fights!

Ali (London)

Did we see Amir Khan get exposed vs Maidana or did he show he is a champion? I love the guy but fear for his life against a Bradley or Pacman

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

How did he get exposed? That's an overused word. Khan fought his rear end off, fought very well, showed speed, discipline, huge heart. So he got rocked means he's exposed? Please.

Louis (NYC)

Hey Danno, what are the plans for New Years Eve?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

First off, happy 25th birthdat Louis The Freak! Plan on a quiet dinner out with my wife. Nothing to crazy.

Lee (Salisbury, MD)

DTM, any chance you make the short trip to Salisbury for FNF on 02/18/11?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

I would love to but I think I will be in Vegas that weekend for the Montiel-Donaire fight.

Security Guard (Las Vegas)

I disagree with your pick for bravest performance

Tony (Detroit)

You got dissed in The Ring this month regarding your TV appearances. I believe it was Jim Bagg's piece. Care to rebut? (For the record, I think you do a fine job.)

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Didn't see it. As long as they spelled my name right I don't care.

Marlon (Phoenix)

New Years Eve DVD Pick?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

I think I might take the night off from boxing if that's OK with you.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, While I agree 110% that having Emmanuel Steward as his trainer can only benefit Chad Dawson is or was there something wrong with Eddie Mustafa Muhammed? I thought he was well respected in Boxing circles as a trainer?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

I don't know the specifics but I am told the camp for the Pascal fight was not good. I think Eddie and Chad basically ran their course with each other. Sometimes guys need a change, the fighter and the trainer.

Mark (ATL)

Can Mayorga even make 154 anymore? Or is this going to be at a weight north of 154?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

I have wondered that and I know there are those at Top Rank who also worry. Don't be shocked to see other junior middles on the undercard in case he doesn't and they have to make a change at the last minute.

Mary (Charlotte)

Have we seen the end of women's boxing? Laila Ali andChristy Martin seemed to be all that women's boxing had, now they are gone, is it over?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Women's boxing is still around but largely meaningless to most fans. There are some fine female fighters but women's boxing is such a small part of the overall sport.

brown ((flint) )

im hearing kermit cintron saying that he can knock Berto out at 147. what do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Kermit Cintron can say whatever he wants. Does anyone have big interest in seeing him fight right now coming off his fight with Williams? I don't.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, does it bother you that you were "exposed" by Bob Arum's middle finger?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Not at all.

chris (boston)

I'm definitely going to MSG to see The Middleweight Champ Sergio Martinez fight in March... Will you be there or in Vegas to cover the Miguel Cotto fight

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

I haevn't thought that far ahead.

Ric (UVA)

Don't know if someone has asked, but is there a 24/7 for Pac/Mosley?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Considering Top Rank and HBO do not have a deal for the fight at this point it's not something I can answer.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, your prospect of the year article is always my favorite and brings back good memories. Looking back at 2001, was there anyone in the sport who didn't have Francisco Bojado as their best prospect in years? Strong amateur who was supposed to be a buzzsaw.

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

No. He was the consensus pick. But I get ripped over it. But that's OK.

Justin (ATL)

anything on andre dirrell?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Heard he had a headache.

Johann (Berlin, CT)

I know you are just speaking the truth and are entitled to your own opinion but I was just wondering if you got any heat from Sugar Shane and Bob Arum with your awesome blog trashing the Pacman fight and the appearance on SC the day after it was announced?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I haven't spoken to Bob since because he has been on vacation. I spoke to Shane just before it came out and told him it was coming. We had a good talk.

Chico (Patterson CA)

Now I know this will most likely never happen...BUT I was watching some tapes I have of 2010 fights and I started thinking...what about Khan vs Berto? I think it would be a good fight. Thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

It would be a good fight and I could actually see it happening down the road. Same with Berto-Victor Ortiz.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

But Dirrell cannot comment on his headache until his lawyer is present...That interview was a classic this year.. watching all the Dirrell's squirm and basically call for their lawyer.

David (Houston)

I dont care about Cintron either. He totally punked out against Williams. Put him in the cry baby corner with Allan Green and they can both color pictures in 2011.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

OMG. Green-Cintron for the WBC super intergalactic excuse champeeeeeeeeenship of the world!!!!!!!!

Hayemaker (London)

I am putting all of England on notice in 2011. Martin Rogan...this means you.

Marlon (Phoenix)

Out of the blue question: Will we get to see Alonso Lopez (Ricardo Lopez's son) on US tv anytime soon? His father was an awesome technician and the kid's his boxing doppelganger.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

The kid has popped up on a couple of Top Rank Live undercards and would expect more of that in 2011.

James (Gainesville, FL)

Any word on what Mayweather's punishment is going to be? Do you think he will serve any time?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

I have no idea. He'll be in court on Jan. 24.

Manny (East LA)

How does Tommy Hearns' son get a title shot when there are so many more worth options? Is this a case of them simply trading on the family name to sell tickets?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Ding, ding, ding! He's very little threat to Sturm, he comes relatively cheap and he has a name. Can you believe Ronald is actually older than Sturm? I was shocked when I looked that up yesterday when I was writing the story about the fight.

Rommel (Alameda. CA)

Dan,Do you have a problem if Martinez and PAC both get Fighter Of The Year, a tie?!

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Yes because Martinez was CLEARLY fighter of the year. Honestly, it's not close in my mind. Manny is a great fighter but in 2010 Martinez did more against better opponents. He is the fighter of the year. Period.

Hayemaker (London)

If my fans make enough noise about wanting Botha, then that's the fight we'll make

Joe (Chevy Chase)

My girlfriend bought me the Foreman-Frazier fight, is letting me watch it while she cooks me dinner and then she is wearing for me the "outfit" bought her for xmas! How's that for marriage material?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Go buy a ring -- and I don't mean the mag.

bill (carmel, ny)

dan, i agree that martinez is clear fighter of the year. but have you ever had a tie in year end awards?

Alex (Lancashire, UK)

Dan, I've never seen a full Gatti fight and feel empty because of it ;). Do you know anywhere that sells DVDs? Looked on Amazon but zilch :(

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

For shame. There are plenty of sites that sell stuff. Look at the ads in Boxing Weekly, for example or go on ebay.

Adam (DuPage)

What can we expect from James Kirkland in 2011?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

I think he will gun for a world title.

Juan (Perth Amboy)

Gamboa- Juanma in 2011?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

I sure hope so.

chris (boston)

Hey Dan have u been to Montreal for a Lucian Bute fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

No and I hope that changes in 2011. I have been to Montreal several times. Great city. But never for a fight.

David (Houston)

James Kirkland will "gun" for a world title. LOL did you put that way on purpose?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

If you have been in these chats for any amount of time what do you think?

Bing (Philly)

I don't see the point of New Years.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

It's just an excuse to sell Champagne and calendars right?

Cam (NJ)

Can David Haye fail a fight physical if he found to be missing both testicles?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Ryan (Lawrence, PA)

Is Clottey up to anything yet? I know he looked terrible against Manny, but a lot of people have. I think he would be a good opponent for Berto. How he handled Clottey as compared to Manny could let us know how good he really is.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

He could be back on Cotto's undercard on March 12.

Marvis (Detroit)

Gus Johnson is like getting needles stuck in my ears, I am happy to have Steve Albert back. Anyway, what's your favorite call of all time? Mine is Howard Cosell, "Down goes Frazier!!" Foreman vs. Frazier

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

I would have to say the best all-time call to me is Lampley when Foreman regained the heavyweight title when he knocked out Moorer: "It happened! It happened!" Just legendary and perfect. I was still living at my mom's house and was going crazy watching that and made so much noise I woke up my mother and sister, who both came into my room wondering what the hell was going on.

Chris (San Antonio)

With all the undercard fights you see before the televised event starts, do you ever consider any of them for your year end awards, or mostly stick to fights fans have had an opportunity, some how, to see?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

I defintely consider them if they are worthy.

Hayemaker (London)

thinking Ray Austin may be ready to challenge me now...

President (Wells Fargo Bank)

We have David Haye's testicle in a safety deposit box with instructions to hold them until the Vitali and Wlad retire

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

LOL!!

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, I rewatched all of your KO's of the last 10 years and I came away in awe of the Wilson vs Nwodo KO. That was as brutal as a KO can get and that was a great all around fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

That was pretty sick. Probably the most awesome knockout in Friday Night Fights history. Absolutely savage.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

I was ecstatic to see Luna-Luna on your FOTY list. Up until Calderon-Segura, I thought a few 4 rounders were the best fights I'd seen this year.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

There actually three four-rounders that could have made the list but I went with only one. There was Luna-Luna, which was sensational. There was McWilliams Arroyo losing to Takashi Okada at MSG on a Calderon undercard in a terrific fight and there was a blazing four-rounder on Golden Boy's Fight Night Club (can't recall the names off the top of my head).

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, Do you plan on putting togather some best of the decade awards?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

No. The decade ended last year.

Will (san antonio)

More likely in 2011..Floyd wearing the WBO welterweight belt or an ankle bracelet?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Maybe even money.

bill (carmel, ny)

i found soto-antillon on youtube. ooh la la!

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, in reviewing your ko of the year awards for the past decade, would you almost consider Sergio-Williams the best of all? Stakes were very high and putting Williams to sleep wasn't even an option. Only one close, IMO, was Tarver-Jones.

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

It's sure up there. Tarver-Jones was as stunning as any knockout ever in the history of the sport. And Pacquiao ruining Hatton in the way in which he did and doing it so early was also surprising.

Nurse Smith (OBGYN office)

David Haye, the doctor is ready to see you.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

You should see some of the Ducker comments I haven't posted!

Hayemaker (London)

the Klits can just get in line behind Jason Gavern

chris (boston)

Watching the Kevin Kelley- Naseem Hamed fight, then I think I'll watch Hamed vs. Barerra next

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Nice. How about a little Barrera-McKinney????

George (Ireland)

Sorry, I'm of to the pub, celebrate the New Year and all that. I'll Have a pint of Guinness for you Dan. I leave you this though. Keep the freaks happy.Jingle bells, Mayweather smells,Pacman all the wayOh, what fun it is to watchKatsidis in a fight, HEY...Dashing through the showIn a 12 round open fightOh theres David HayeDucking all the wayBoxing bells to ringMax Kellerman thinks hes brightWhat fun it is to chat and drinkwith dan rafael tonight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Well done other than the Kellerman crack.

jcs (winnipeg, Canada)

posting stories on twitter and hosting a chat...is there more than one Dan Raf?ael

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Only one, like Ricky Hatton.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, any idea if SNY will show Adamek/Maddalone ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

Not sure.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, With much appreciation for all the hard work that went into the end-of-the-year awards I was wondering if you'll share your thoughts on some other Boxing related subjects like Trainer of the Year, Play-by-play announcer, and best production etc., etc.?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

A lot of people have asked me about that. Maybe I will write a blog in the next few days.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

How do you differentiate between a prospect and a contender? Isn't Lemieux ready to fight for a title at this point?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

It's not an exact science, especially in today's game where guys jump right from being legit prospects into title fights sometimes without fighting a serious contender. But given his age and the fact that he's only been pro for a few years I still consider him a prospect.

Zach (MPLS)

Dan, How close was Ismayl Syllakh to making your prospects list?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Strongly considered him. Honestly, I limited myself to 25 because after that it is just too much. It's a lot even at 25, but there were another 5-6 guys I could have easily included, including him.

Ollie (San Antonio, TX)

Dan, what are the chances Sergio Martinez coming down in weight to fight Cotto? And how do you see that fight going, because personally I think Cotto has more left in the tank than people realize your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

He said he would fight him at 155. Top Rank/Cotto declined.

bill (carmel, ny)

dan, is it possible for someone to be on your prospect of the year list for more than one year?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Yes, plenty have been on the list 2-3 times. The only thing I haven't done is include the winner on the next year's list.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Freaks check out this KO. Ding a Ling Man vs Nwodo. This is so brutal is should come with a disclaimer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OS77moBJnTM&feature=related

Ducker H. (London)

Maskaev has avoided me long enough.

Robert (Pennsylvania)

Dan how close was Brad Soloman to making your super 25 prospect list?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

He was one of the hardest cuts.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Since your end-of-the-year awards have become staples for the true Boxing freaks I was wondering if promoters, managers, or the fighters themselves try to lobby you to get picked or mentioned in your award choices? And can you share any of the ones who did?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Yes, they most certainly do. I will not name names.

Andy (NY)

Just saw Choi Tsveenpurev-Derry Matthews II Round 2 on Youtube. ..Great shout for Round of the Year! Fantastic drama!

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Glad you liked that one. Sort of a little gem few knew about in the US but really good stuff.

Hayemaker (London)

not splitting the Isle of Man PPV revenue. The Klits either take the deal or I go right to Skelton.

Hayemaker (London)

I've narrowed down my next opponent to 2: Tommy Morrison or Donovan "Razor" Ruddock

Mark (Windsor, ON.)

Happy New Year, Dan!! Any updates on the undercard for Bradley - Alexander?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

So far the only thing for sure is the Tim Coleman-Vernon Paris fight.

Hayemaker (London)

maybe Jimmy Thunder next, then Seldon....

Robert (Dayton)

Do you have any idea what's behind HBO's fascination with Dzinziruk? First they limited Williams' options to a Martinez rematch or a fight with Dzinziruk, and now they seem to be insisting that Martinez face him. While he's probably the best in his division, I don't understand how he has the style, activity, or name recognition to be part of two ultimatums by HBO. Is Greenburg just trying to reclaim the key Ukrainian-American demographic he might have lost when he cut off the Klitschkos?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

It's very simple: HBO made a committment to put him on in the first quarter and they are trying to kill two birds with one stone by having him on against another guy they promised a date to. Here's what is INSANE -- from what I am told HBO also promised Dzinziruk a comeback fight win or lose! And all I could think of was a comeback from what??? What is there to come back from when nobody knows you in the first place!! It is just pure HBO insanity.

Hayemaker (London)

Butterbean has no more excuses...

Hayemaker (London)

eyeing the loser of Chambers-Rossy....

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

You guys are brutal!

chuzen (st. louis)

when selecting prospect of the year, which is more important, how they actually performed that year, or their potential?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

They are both important but I am looking at career potential. So, for example, the fact that Khan was beaten right afterward wasn't not great but I still think in the long term he will have an outstanding career and that is what it's about.

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

By the way Freaks, it looks like ESPN3.com will have coverage of next week's Shumenov-Brahmer 175 unification from Kazakhstan.

Charles (DFW)

If HBO wanted to take such a hardline stance with Sergio over opponents, why not insist he fight someone like Pirog if Zbik and Lee were so unacceptable and put Dzinziruk on the undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

I agree.

Ethers (England)

If Jean Pascal won against B-Hop would he of been in the fighter of the year consideration?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

He probably would have made the list of honorables but I would still have named Sergio.

chuzen (st louis)

thank goodness for espn3

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

You know it.

Paul Williams (Amen Corner, GA)

Know what I'm sayin!

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

No, Paul, tell us exactly what you are saying?

Boxingcraze.com (Everywhere)

Hello Dan,I always notice that your fight freaks always ask you where to get DVD's or where to find fights for their collection, boxingcraze.com is the answer! The only answer!!! By the way, if you ever need anything personally just let me know.

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

Can't vouche for the site but maybe something to check out.

Hayemaker (London)

Lionel Butler next, then maybe Joe Hipp is he loses an eliminator

Tony (Tampa)

Dan, Most disappointing fighter of 2010(inside the ring)....

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Probably Williams between the Cintron performance (not all that good before the frog jumped) and the Martinez loss.

Ken (Brooklyn)

Dan, love the chats. They're a great end to the week. Bill Simmons has mentioned he'd like to have you on a podcast. Any chance you take him up on that offer? It'd be great to hear you two.

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

All he has to do is call.

ace (Australia)

it's around 2am on new years day here in OZ and instead of hitting the hay i'm staying up until the chats on.

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Sweet.

Hayemaker (London)

Bobby Gunn knows how to reach me

Kenneth (Estonia)

Dan the man!Alvarez 2011! I know there is talks of Matthew Hatton and Viacheslav Senchenko, but who would you like to see him mix it up with and why?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

From what I am told Senchenko is off the table at this point. They are massively apart on the money and I don't think it's going to happen.

Chris M. (Toronto)

Hey Dan. You tweeted that Steward and Muhammad are "MUCH" different trainers. Could you please elaborate on this opinion for the Freaks? Thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Emanuel is very offensive minded. Eddie focuses more on defense. The differences are stark.

Daniel (Wilmington, Ca)

These David Haye comments are ridiculous. I keep laughing and my coworkers keep asking me why. They just wouldn't understand. Great Suff!

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

The funny thing is I am not the one writing them. They are being submitted and I posted a mere fraction of the ones I am receiving.

Jon (Las Vegas)

I think Mosley v Pacquiao should be a tag team match... Mosley can team up with Elliot Ness and Manny can team up with Boo Boy.

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Now THAT would make it more interesting to me.

Tony (Tampa)

My Christmas wish for 2011(and it is doable): Wilbon and Kornheiser have you on PTI to discuss boxing

MikeRo72 (Chicago)

$20 for each John Ruiz fight????? Please banish boxingcraze.com

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

OUCH!

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Wait -- does Boxingcraze pay you the $20 to take the fight?????

Floyd Mayweather Jr (Las Vegas, NV)

Every night my daddy checks under the bed and in the closet for Manny Pacquiao before tucking me in. He also needs to leave the light on for me.

Matt (Naperville, IL)

How about pirog vs lee on the undercard for Martinez's fight

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Would be good but I doubt that is going to happen. HBO at the moment is planning a one-fight telecast on March 12 (which is ABSURD).

Eliace (Australia)

What do you think is the second biggest fight in boxing happening after Mayweather-Pacman? I'd say Wlad-Haye.

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

I would agree with that.

MikeRo72 (Chicago)

You mentioned boxing weekly earlier in the thread. is that an e-magazine or a traditional publication? Please post link, thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

It's a weekly printed magazine in the UK. They have a Web site with some stuff on it but the mag is really great.

Hayemaker (London)

if the Klits don't budge on splitting Maldives TV money, I walk

Rags (NYC)

Dan: Does TR have any plans to start moving Matt Korobov up the ladder in 2011? Seems with his amateur background he should be in fights with guys like Brian Vera, Andy Lee (ShoBox fight?) or maybe John Duddy @ the Garden in '11....

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Korobov has been a disappointment of late. He's not getting better, seems to lack fire and has had like 4-5 trainers since he turned pro, which is ridiculous. He was on my prospect list at the end of last year and left off this year.

Kevin (Boston)

Kind of funny/frustrating to look at your prospects of the year and see you gave it to Berto in '06. Four years later we're still waiting to see him in substantial fight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Good point.

emilio (miami florida)

Do you see Cotto-Margarito II coming soon on ppv

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

In June, yes.

hayemaker (UK)

Buster Douglas, Your Next!

Garth (Stamford, CT)

Happy New Year Dan and great job on your year end awards. I can't imagine the amount of work it takes to put them together so it is very much appreciated.

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Thanks. It is extraordinarily time consuming but glad you enjoy it.

Dylan (Ft. Collins, CO)

Do you think the abundance of weight classes/titles diminishes anything Manny has accomplished?

David (Houston)

Do you see Margarito fighting before June? He will still have to be licensed we must not forget.

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

He isn't going to fight before June. He almost certainly will go directly to a Cotto rematch.

mark (the house)

king freak, where can i watch soto antillion...i didnt see it..thanks for your great reporting..really have gotten me into the sport of boxing and it really has become a joy in my life..thanks!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

Sorry to say you're out of luck unless somebody posted it on youtube or some other video site. The third round is on Top Rank's web site and Top Rank has said when it is contractually allowed to it wants to post the whole thing on its site (but it cant yet due to contractual minutia with the PPV provider).

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, do you no longer consider Seth Mitchell a prospect, or has he simply graduated from your list?

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

Do you know how to read?

Ducker H. (London)

It's time to settle my feud with Joe Mesi.

Duff (Boston, MA)

I think the great Fight Night Club fight you were thinking of was Oscar Andrade vs Ramon Valadez.

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

That's it! Good memory.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, I didn't see Mitchell on your list!

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

He is there. Look again.

mark (the house)

if i send you money can you send me castillo corrales 1...i have read a ton of stuff where you praise that fight as one of the best ever and i would love to see that also

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

LOL! No you can't send me money. The fight does show up on ESPN Classic sometimes. Look thru your cable guide. It's one of the greatest fights of all time. I was lucky to be ringside.

Tom (Philly)

Oh my lord, those Haye comments are ridiculously funny. The funniest part is that I can imagine him saying some of those things with a straight face.

chuzen (st louis)

dan how sick would it be to have a fight at cameron indoor stadium with the crazies? has it ever happened?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Hasn't happened but that would rock.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Sorry Dan, I see him now. I expected him higher, and just didn't see him that far down. My bad!

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Like I said can you read? The list other than the winner is ALPHABETICAL!

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Earlier you were discussing fighters who got crushed in a particular fight and were never the same again. What fighter or fighters that got destroyed in a fight managed to come back to even greater success?

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Barrera jumps to mind after the losses to Junior Jones (including a destruction in the first fight). Holyfield after the third Bowe fight in which he was crushed enjoyed some of his biggest and best wins.

doctor of style (Chester, UK)

Dantanamo Bay, if I send you money can you guarantee NEVER to send me a John Ruiz fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

I think we can work something out, yes.

Adam (DuPage)

How fast do you see Top Rank moving Mike Lee?

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Slowly. He needs a lot of work.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, is it true that David Haye is wearing a shirt of a decapitated T-Rex Sanders in anticipation of their potential matchup?

Boxingcraze.com (Everywhere)

Any orders involving John Ruiz fights will be discounted at a premium, can't give those away!! haha. Mark, send me an email and I will send you Soto-Antillon and Castillo-Corrales free of charge just for being a fight freak and wanting the two classics!

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

Freaks making friends. This is so touching.

MikeRo72 (Chicago)

I wonder if EA Sports programmed into their game a feature that when you try and fight the virtual David Haye he avoids you altogether. Or when you try and make Haye fight a virtual K-Bro the game resets to the homescreen.

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

OMG that is hilarious.

james (ottawa, ontario, canada)

Dan, the words "crushed" and Holyfield should never go in the same sentence. Shame on you.

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

Did you ever watch the fight?

chris (boston)

would you pay $1 to watch the next Holyfield fight

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

What's the catch?

Kieran (Presently in England)

Joe Louis pretty much had the snot beat out of him by Max Schmeling in their first fight and he bounced back to have a pretty decent career.

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

A good call by our boy.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

"Like I said can you read? The list other than the winner is ALPHABETICAL!"...cmon freaks, keep it together...Dan was in a good mood. Although classic line, Dan!

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

Yeah but Gary is irking my nerves big time right now!

David Haye (Match.com)

Likes: Romantic walks by the duck pond, Cooked duck, ducktales, duck duck goose, duck hunter and Anaheim Mighty Ducks.Dislikes: Gigantic and powerful Ukranians.

Pete (My Man cave)

What's your favorite cereal?

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

These are my readers. But what the hell. Corn Chex are a morning staple.

Ducker H. (London)

Shane Cameron can't hide down under forever.

James (UK)

I noticed you put Degale but not Groves in your prospect of the year, I actually agree with that but over here they're seen to be at a similar level with similar potential, just curious as to why you chose Degale and not Groves?

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

Personal preference. I have seen Groves several times (including in person) and just don't see what everyone else is seeing. Maybe I'm wrong.

Hayemaker (London)

I'll give the Klits half the Caymans if they give me all of Azerbaijan

Keith H (Seattle)

Gary, is the Oregon school system really that bad?!

Carlson Tucker (Bowtie-land)

Antonio Margarito should have been executed.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Sorry Dan, but I've already begun drinking for New Year's Eve! Apparently, drinking and reading don't mix! :) Going to hang out with Bing if this keeps up!

Chris (CA)

Happy NYE, Planning a trip to Vegas. Should I go for Montiel-Donaire or Cotto-TBA, which will likely have the better fight week?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

It all depends on which fight you like better. The Cotto card will probably be overall better because its a PPV so there will be some more name fighters on there. One is at MGM and one at Mandalay, so which casino do you like better?

Matthew (Toronto, Canada)

Hey Dan, what is your favorite Canadian fighter of all time?

Dan Rafael
  (2:54 PM)

Lennox Lewis.

chris (boston)

Hey Dan, exactly what does Al Haymon do?

Make his fighters a ton of money while giving HBO crappy fights. He does it very, very well. Not his fault HBO buys it. He's doing his job.

The Klitschkos will get their chance, but first I have to give Audley Harrison a much deserved rematch.

Who pops his head up first this year? Winky Wright, Luis Collazo, Alfredo Angulo or the 2012 Ground Hog?

Dan Rafael

Couldn't possibly end the year without at least one Valuev comment.

OK Fight Freaks, thanks for another great chat and whole year of crazy chats -- 60 of them between our regular Friday editions and the Saturday late-night RAD chats. Hope you all have a great New Year's and we get all the fights we want in 2011. And make sure you check out all the yearly awards stories that have run every day this week. Talk you next week when we can get ready for the season premier of Friday Night Fights on ESPN2! Peace.
