Chat with Todd Archer

Steven (Big D)

Would love to see Marvin Lewis or John Fox here is the D Coordinator....your thoughts??

Todd Archer
  (3:04 PM)

Thanks for starting this chat off. Those aren't bad names to consider. Lewis has 3-4 experience, but Fox doesn't. Fox, however, knows Jason Garrett and the Jones family better. I'm not that hung up on 3-4 or 4-3 guy. The Cowboys will run the 3-4 next year, according to Jerry Jones but I don't know that a 4-3 guy will be excluded. The Cowboys are in a 4-3 when they run their sub defense and that's about 45 percent of the time.

Shane Dorney (Keensburg,IL)

Hey Todd, If the cowboys release RB Marion Barber if they do?Will the cowboys go after that RB from Illinois who has a big game against Baylor in the texas bowl.

Todd Archer
  (3:05 PM)

He looked good against Baylor, for sure, but I wouldn't look for running back to be at the top of the list for the Cowboys in the draft if they cut Barber. Felix Jones and Tashard Choice are OK and there are some at Valley Ranch that like Lonyae Miller, who has done a pretty good job on special teams. Maybe they go after a runner but the Illinois guy could be gone before they want to take one.

Kirk (Florida)

first of all Archer love your show lol. I think Michael Irvin would be a great WR coach for the Cowboys, having his desire passion and drive back on the sidelines would help the whole team. If your a wr and the Playmaker tells you to do something you do it! What do you think the chances are something like this could happen? Would a New HC want him and would Irvin want to?

Todd Archer
  (3:07 PM)

Not sure Michael would want to take the paycut to be a wide receivers coach. And that's a lot of time to put in to be an assistant. I think Michael likes his life the way it is right now.

John (New Jersey)

If Boys put out the effort and still lose, does JG still have the inside track regardless of Fisher's status? Also if JG does not get the top job here, where will he most likely end up?

Todd Archer
  (3:09 PM)

I think this is Jason Garrett's job in the end, even if Jeff Fisher is available. The Cowboys could have to act fast because I would think other teams will come after Garrett based on what he has done as the interim coach. If Miami has an opening, maybe he would be considered there. His family has ties to Cincinnati and the Bengals might not be as bad as everybody thinks. But I'll go back to my first comment - he'll be the head coach here.

Brian (Pendleton)

If Jason Garret, becomes the permanent head coach, do you see him bringing in someone like Josh Mcdaniels or Norv Turner to help out the offense?

Todd Archer
  (3:11 PM)

I don't see that. And Norv is reported to be safe in San Diego. If/when Garrett gets the job, I think he'll have a coordinator in name only. He will continue to call the plays.

Matthew (New York)

Hey. I sent a message to your mailbag (not sure if you got it.) Do you know what jersey number Jeff Moturi has? DallasCowboys.com hasn't updated yet and I want to keep Wikipedia's Cowboys articles updated (I'm an editor there.) If you know I'd appreciate the help. Thanks.

Todd Archer
  (3:11 PM)

No. 81.

Todd(PA) [via mobile]

Todd what coach should we as fans want n convince me y..Garrett? Fisher? Gruden? I know Bryan Broadus loves Gruden as do I n some fans are asking for Fisher but my gut says Garrett. What's ur opinion n who fits. Jerry can't make a mistake with this one.

Todd Archer
  (3:12 PM)

I'm not a Gruden fan. I think the head coach of the Cowboys has to be really good with personnel. Gruden, to me, did not do a good job with personnel in Tampa Bay. He seemed to like everybody else's players but his own. Fisher would be OK, I guess, but look closer at his record. There are a lot of 8-8s and 7-9s in there. Now, is Garrett really good at personnel? I don't know for sure. He thought Brad Johnson was fine and that didn't work, but he was a big Kitna guy, too.

STEVE (MILWAUKEE,WI)

DO you see JERRY JONES making major moves in free agency to improve the o-line and the secondary?

Todd Archer
  (3:14 PM)

I hate to give the middle of the road answer but maybe is the best I can do. I don't think he wants to go after another top-paid O-linemen, like he's done with Leonard Davis and Marco Rivera in the past. Same thing with safeties too. He was burned by Roy Williams and Ken Hamlin. I don't think Logan Mankins will get out of New England, but he would be a guy I'd make a run at.

Lex (Calgary, AB)

Hello Todd, Are the Cowboys in a postion to make a run next year or is Jerry in denial about the shape of this teaam?

Todd Archer
  (3:16 PM)

Lex, I kind of think the Cowboys can turn this around pretty quickly. Maybe I'm in denial. But I think the return of Tony Romo will help a lot. I think guys like Mike Jenkins and Anthony Spencer will rebound. Put it like this - I think just about every team is 8-8 when the season starts and breaks, injuries and luck determine if you go 10-6 or 6-10. A lot went bad for the Cowboys earlier this season and it just snowballed. Wade Phillips couldn't bail them out. In 2011, I think they can be a 10-6 team and that puts you in contention.

James H. (Addison, TX)

Should Dallas try and take one of the top corners in the draft next year or trade down and get the top O-lineman and pick up teh extra picks for depth at line and take the safety our of UCLA in the 2nd round?

Todd Archer
  (3:19 PM)

I'm not trading down. I'm taking the best player at a position I need. If that's a corner, take a corner. If it's an offensive linemen, safety, defensive linemen or linebacker, take him. The Cowboys get in trouble too many times when Jerry trades down (think '09 draft). If you're asking me for names now, then I'm sorry I can't really help you that much. Too much can change between now and April.

Philip Hunter (plano, texas)

why do you think is the main reason for Cowboys downfall this season, and why do you think there hope is lost?

Todd Archer
  (3:19 PM)

The defense flopped. I don't think there's any other way to say it.

Mike (Florida )

What assistant coaches, if any, return if Garrett is announced as Head Coach?

Todd Archer
  (3:22 PM)

Good question. I think the bulk of the staff returns. Offensive line coach Hudson Houck said he is not retiring, but maybe there's a move there if other people become available. Most of the coaches are under contract in 2011.

Shane Dorney (Keensburg,IL)

Hey Todd, do you think the WR from Oregon who leads the team. WR Dane Senzenbacher from Ohio State.WR Davin Adams from Auburn and WR Roy Roundtree from Michigan a good fit for the cowboys as cowboys wide recivers?your thoughs?

Todd Archer
  (3:22 PM)

I'm kind of done taking wide receivers. They're set with the top two guys and I think Roy Williams will be back in 2011, despite what Timmy Mac wrote earlier in the week. I'd take a wide receiver in the middle rounds, but not near the top.

jim (encinitas)

any chance on jim harbaugh coaching cowboys next year

Todd Archer
  (3:24 PM)

Sounds like he might have a chance at his alma mater, Michigan, or with the Niners. I like Harbaugh. I like his fight. I like what he's done at Stanford. I like what his brother, John, has done at Baltimore. If I were Jerry Jones, I'd talk to him.

alfonso (dallas)

wats the chance that bill cower coaches the cowboys

Todd Archer
  (3:24 PM)

I don't see that one happening at all.

The Dude (Dallas, Tx)

You say romo is a franchise qb, but only the reporting media makes that claim. Broaddus, an actual scout says romo isn't a franchise qb and only has some good traits while guys like Bradford and Luck have rare traits. Other then stats and a non professional scouting opinion, how can anybody in the reporting media make the claim romo is a franchise qb?

Todd Archer
  (3:27 PM)

Dude, so glad to hear from you. Was wondering why it took so long. Maybe I type too slowly. How can we make the claim? Well, the same way Broaddus and others say Bradford and Luck will be. I don't know why you dislike Romo so much. He's won games. He's played well. He's in the top 10 at his position in the NFL. I'm sorry you disagree. I'm sorry Broaddus disagrees. It doesn't mean I'm wrong or the people who believe Romo is a franchise QB are wrong. It means people have differing opinions. If you want an actual NFL person who believes Romo is a franchise QB, then may I suggest you ask Sean Payton. He believes Romo is.

Jeff (MN)

Todd, if Kris Brown wins the kicking job in the offseason, would Dallas keep Buehler around to just to kickoffs?

Todd Archer
  (3:29 PM)

I think it depends on who the coach is. They kept two kickers in 2009. Most teams don't want to keep two kickers on the 53-man roster with how valuable those spots can be. I don't like it, but Buehler is such a weapon as a kickoff guy that I would consider it.

John (New Jersey)

Can Roy Williams be exchanged for a 4th?

Todd Archer
  (3:29 PM)

A fourth what? No, I don't think you'd get much or anything for him because of that contract.

Steven (Big D)

If the staff in Miami gets canned, could Todd Bowles be up for the D cooridnator of secondary coach with the Cowboys? Always heard Jerry was a big fan of his.

Todd Archer
  (3:30 PM)

Todd Bowles is a good name. He worked with Garrett for a year. He knows the 3-4. He has a good relationship with the players. I'd put Todd Grantham in that category too.

Thomas (toronto)

Todd, love your opinions. Here's a thought, if McGee plays well this week, couldn't you see someone offering Jerry a 1 or a 2 for him? That's enough of a good thought for me to want to draft a qb every year.

Todd Archer
  (3:31 PM)

A one or a two? No. I can't see that happening if he plays well this week. Not off six quarters of action. And if he does play well, you have to remember that Kitna is going into the last year of his contract. Why not keep McGee for 2012?

Jim (Phil PA (big "Boys fan))

A lot of talk in NY that the DC of Giants will get consideration for HC. What ya think?

Todd Archer
  (3:32 PM)

Perry Fewell's name was hotter a few weeks ago than it is now, but he'll get some interviews this off-season. I think he did a pretty good job running the show in Buffalo as an interim coach last year.

Danny (PA)

With Sensabaugh on a one year deal and the poor play of Alan Ball, do you see the Cowboys having 2 new starting safeties next year? (is akwasi a possibility)

Todd Archer
  (3:33 PM)

I can see that, yes. Sensabaugh is an interesting case. He has four picks. I think you let him test the market and see what he can get. If the price is in your neighborhood, then keep him but I wouldn't overpay. As for Ball, I'd keep him but put him back in his No. 3/4 corner, No. 3 safety role and excel on special teams.

Zen (Baltimore, MD)

Would it be possible, if Sporano is fired in Miami "unfairly in my opinion", that he could become the Offensive Coordinator assuming Garrett is hired as coach. I think it would be a good fit for the team, because the offense seemed a lot more explosive when he was at Dallas.

Todd Archer
  (3:35 PM)

Sparano would be a good get. I don't know if he would want to come back. Maybe he would. But it would have to be as the line coach, too, not just the OC because Garrett will be the playcaller.

Dean (Lakeland, Fl)

I know Dallas has a bunch of holes to fill on defense and I was wondering if you believe that they would reach for a "Need Position" or draft the "Best Player Available" even if he may not start as a rookie?

Todd Archer
  (3:36 PM)

Can you do both? I think they'll have enough options to where they will be OK. With a top 10 pick, I'm not taking a QB (Sorry, Dude) so I guess I wouldn't be sticking to the best player available theory.

The Dude (Dallas, Tx)

That is easy for Sean Payton so say when he has Drew Brees. And we all know coaches don't come out and criticize their former players with who they have a good personal relationship with. Who would Payton rather have, Brees or romo? easy answer. And romo hasn't won in the playoffs and might be only top 10 in stats which doesn't translate into winning superbowls. I know you missed me early in this chat but I am here now

Todd Archer
  (3:38 PM)

Broaddus will be the first to admit scouts can be wrong. He can tell you about the guys he was wrong about as much as he can tell you about the guys he was right about. Clearly you do not believe in Romo. Clearly I think Romo can be a Super Bowl QB. We'll disagree on this. Sound good? Hapy New Year.

Nick (Dallas)

Champ Bailey, Jonathan Joseph, and Antonio Cromartie highlight this years' class of free agent defensive backs. Do the Cowboys make a run at any of them?

Todd Archer
  (3:39 PM)

Can't see it. Can't see Bailey getting out of Denver. Cromartie played well in a contract year. Joseph was better last year, IMO. If they make a run at a position in free agency I think it'll be at safety but not for huge dollars.

dpa7809 (Dallas, TX)

Do you feel Newman 41 this season has become more of a liability for Daboys pass defense, man or zone not withstanding?

Todd Archer
  (3:42 PM)

I think Newman was having his best season until he got hurt vs. teh New York Giants. Then the rib and ankle injuries slowed him down. He will be an interesting case next year. The Cowboys don't have anyone on the roster to replace him. He makes a lot of money. I can see him being back in 2011 with a chance to prove his worth.

Chad (OKC)

I would expect a large turnover on both the OL and DL but it will probably take more than one off season to make all the necessary changes. Which of the starters are safe going into next season? Will Jerry look to the draft for replacements or FA?

Todd Archer
  (3:43 PM)

On the defensive line - Olshansky, Ratliff and Bowen, who will be a free agent. On the offensive line - Free and Gurode, but I would bring Kosier, who will be a free agent, back, too.The Cowboys must look at the draft for both spots. The good teams have good lines. By 2012 I can see Free being the only guy left on the line from this year.

Steven (Big D)

Can Montrae Holland be a stop gap starter at G for the Cowboys in 2011?

Todd Archer
  (3:44 PM)

There are some at Valley Ranch who wanted to see Holland play more this year. I think he could be a short-term answer on the interior, yes.

John ((Richmond, VA))

A new angle on the Marion Barber situation. With the durability of Felix Jones in question for the full season, why not keep Barber and restructure the contract? He has been running well of late and can pick up the blitz, catch out of the backfield and is killer in short yardage. Simply put, he fills a lot more holes than either FJ or Choice. Happy New Year!

Todd Archer
  (3:45 PM)

Why would Barber restructure his deal? He'd rather have a chance somewhere else I 'd think.

Will (Maryland)

They drafted AOA in the 4th round as a safety/corner prospect and he has been hurt most of the year but do we know enough about him to think he can be of any help at all at safety or corner next year?

Todd Archer
  (3:47 PM)

They can pencil him in, but they should also know there's an eraser there too. The kid has athletic ability but they can't go into next year with him being a presumed starter. I'd rather see what he does in camp and then give him a chance.

Perry Hagen (Cedar Rapids,Iowa)

I think a great pick up for the Boys would be Gabbert from Missouri! The guys got an arm and is accurate as hell!

Todd Archer
  (3:47 PM)

Didn't he have a pick six against your Hawkeyes in whatever bowl that was the other day?

Danny (PA)

Is Doug Free the long term answer at LT?

Todd Archer
  (3:49 PM)

I think so. I think he's done fairly well as the left tackle this year. But if they can get a left tackle in the draft, I wouldn't be opposed to moving Free to the right side. He definitely gives them some versatility. As a left tackle, I think Free is better than OK. I think he can be effective there for a number of years.

Mark (Windsor, ON)

Are the Cowboys seriously considering moving J-Rat outside pr is it just talk?

Todd Archer
  (3:50 PM)

I think they'll consider everything after the way the defense has played. Here's my thought on Ratliff playing end in a 3-4 - what makes him special as a nose tackle does not necessarily make him special as an end in a 3-4. I wouldn't assume the same production from him if he shifted outside.

John (New Jersey)

With a new HC, and many holes to fill in 2011; how can anyone expect Dallas to contend next year? This team needs 2-3 yrs to rebuild and get younger and by then Romo will begin to get "old".

Todd Archer
  (3:52 PM)

Did you have KC, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville or Chicago doing what they have done this year? It's not that hard to turn things around in the NFL.

Antonio (DE)

What do you think about getting Nick Fairley in the draft to play DE? Our sack totals have dropped the past 3 years and increased pressure from our DLine will improve our secondary

Todd Archer
  (3:54 PM)

He's disruptive that's for sure. They hit on another Auburn guy in Ratliff. But when I see him play I think he's more of a 4-3 guy, not a 3-4 guy. But for The Dude's sake, I'll ask some scout friends.

Antonio (DE)

There's no way Jerry lets Garrett go to another organization after seeing what Sean Payton did in New Orleans... is there?

Todd Archer
  (3:54 PM)

I wouldn't go there. I'd just say Jerry had a vision of Garrett being his head coach at some point when he signed him in 2007 before he hired Wade Phillips. There's a lot to be said for that.

The Dude (Dallas, Tx)

What makes you think he can? What has he done with his 1-3 playoff record? They did start 1-5 with him this season. If he doesn't get the job done this next year, what choice do the Cowboys have but to move on and draft a qb. This team will turn into a team like the Panthers if they keep romo around

Todd Archer
  (3:55 PM)

Well, if Luck goes back to Stanford and the Cowboys stink again in 2011, they'll have the chance to get him.

Bluefin (Pawleys Island, SC)

With a new defensive coordinator likely, what do you think the team will do at SOLB? I don't see how they can let Anthony Spencer (13.5 career sacks) go forward unchallenged. What is the point of a 3-4 with only one threat at outside 'backer?

Todd Archer
  (3:56 PM)

Love the golf courses down your way, Bluefin. Good point. If they like Victor Butler and Brandon Williams, then the Cowboys should let eiter guy have a chance to beat out Spencer. But I have a feeling they won't.

Todd Archer
  (3:58 PM)

Thanks for all the questions and comments, even from you, Dude. Everybody have a Happy New Year and a safe New Year. Let's do this again sometime soon.
