Welcome to another live chat! Hope everyone had a great holiday. Now let us get started.
There's been some talk of Houston moving ahead of UCF as a canidate for Big East Eapansion. Have you heard anything to support this?
I have not heard anything about that, Tom. I still believe UCF is at the top of the list from everything I have heard.
Hi Andrea, I just wanted to wish you a Happy New Year. Your thoughts on NC vs Tennessee later today?
Thanks, Mark and Happy New Year to you and everyone else out there! I am not sure you want to hear my thoughts, considering my non-AQ picks have been dreadful. But I like North Carolina. Tennessee did not beat a team with a winning record this year and had a losing record in conference. What Butch Davis has been able to do with a very depleted team leads me to believe UNC wins.
Which non-BCS bowl team this year has the best chance to be playing in National Championship next year?
Wow, C.J. On the spot! I have not had time to think about this, so I reserve the right to change my mind. I say Oklahoma.
Wait, you said non-BCS team!
I am going to think for a few minutes on this and get back to you. It's a good way for you to hang around the chat!
Out of all the non-AQ's, which teams do you think are the biggest disapointments this year and which teams were the biggest surprises?
Biggest disappointment -- BYU. Biggest surprises: Nevada, Miami (Ohio) and Tulsa.
When Boise is brought up as a potential expansion candidate to one of the bigger conferences tv market size is a drawback that is brought up a lot, but when you look at national tv ratings Boise outperforms Utah, TCU and a large chunk of the AQ schools. They also (last I checked) were ahead of both Utah and TCU in licensing and merchandise. Why wouldn't these factors carry more weight vs. how many tv sets are in a 30 mile radius or however they decide the tv market size? Yes I understand that TCU is in Dallas, and Utah has SLC but when you look at ratings tv market size really is not very important, wouldn't you rather have more of a national following than a large local audience?
The market size is important to the conferences and the schools that play in them, regardless of those TV ratings. That is why TCU and Utah got the nod. I am not really sure Boise State has much more of a national following either, despite those ratings. This team has been extremely polarizing in its quest to try to get into a BCS national title game. If Boise State was just another team in the Big 12, would the ratings be better than TCU in the Big East or Utah in the Pac-12?
After watching Utah lose all of its big games and barely get by Pitt in overtime at home are you still convinced Utah will be able to compete for the PAC10 title next season?
Sure. The Pac-10 has 4 bowl teams this year and is a parity-riddled conference. Yes, Utah certainly let down a lot of its fans, but I don't see the Utes as any worse than UCLA, Arizona State, Washington State or Oregon State.
Hey Andrea! With San Diego State getting a huge win against Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl and finishing 9-4, do you see them sneaking into the top 25 to end the season?
Great question. It really depends on who else loses, but the Aztecs have a shot and so does Tulsa.
What's your opinion on the age-old question... Should college players be paid to play?
Last I check, they are getting paid -- full scholarship for 4 to 5 years, room and board, food, free medical treatment. Is that not enough?
I love how David Kelly recruits Miami for UCF. Is he sticking around next year?
His name has come up in the past for other jobs, but he has consistently turned them down. I know he wants a head coaching opportunity, but I don't see one this season. I think he stays.
Looks like I am going to let you down this week. I got nothing, sorry. Blame it on the Egg Nog.
AJ, do not show your face in this chat again. Well, unless you have a good slogan. Then come on back!
There have been some lately, in particular ESPNs Scott VanPelt and Kirk Herbstreit, saying UGA has one of the most delusional fan bases, particularly in reference to our lack of patience with Richt. Is it really so bad or even out of place we expect success? We may not be ND or USC but should 7-6, 8-5 really be enough?
Well, I can speak from experience ... When I worked at my previous job at the Orlando Sentinel, I predicted Georgia would go 6-6 and finish ranked in the 60s this season, and we had Mark Richt on the hot seat. That set off a torrent of some of the nastiest comments I have ever received. But truth be told, the fans thought we were nuts for having Richt on the hot seat. I think it is well earned after the last 2 seasons. I know he has had an incredible amount of success there, and you have to give him credit for that. But sometimes, programs need a change in leadership to get the ship righted. I think Georgia fans should expect more than what happened these last 2 seasons, absolutely. Guess we will wait and see what happens in 2011.
Andrea, do you see the Boise State program declining (even a little bit) anytime in the near future? Or are they at the point where they can "re-load" instead of "re-build"? Thanks.
I think next season is going to be critical. I know Kellen Moore returns, but he loses Pettis and Young, and the defense loses a lot of incredibly talented players. 2012 is going to be huge, too, when Moore leaves. I don't think any program is immune to rebuilding. Look at Texas and Florida this year.
What do you make of the news that Robert Anae has resigned from BYU? This has to be a positive for the Cougars, right?
Not surprising, because he was going to be fired anyway, right? He accomplished plenty of great things at BYU, but I guess the time had come for him to go. I know the fans want Doman in there as the new OC, right?
byu's matt reynolds. stays or goes.
I think he stays because of the NFL's labor uncertainty.
do you think georgai will do good next year and do you aaron murray can be an all american next year
Well that all depends. We saw how Georgia struggled without AJ Green early in the year. If AJ Green is gone, does that mean Aaron Murray struggles again? I also want to see some improvement from this defense. Perhaps another year in the 3-4 with Grantham will work out the kinks much better (and get them to stop the run!). I don't know if Murray will be an All-American next season, but he has the potential.
If UCF does go Big East, what will USF have to say about market infringement
USF has fought this move for years, but I think that the program is being overruled now.
Has anyone ever asked Boise State and all the other want-to-bes why they will not do as Florida State did to become a big-time program? Play all the big boys away and not cry about them not wanting to give a return date to your FCS stadium. No Whining!
Well if those programs want to pay Boise State what all the other non-AQ teams get for the "guarantee games" so the Broncos can make up the $$ they would be losing for home games. Economics play a much larger role in athletics today than they did back in the early 1980s when FSU was playing anywhere anytime.
Colorado State University disappointmented this year. Any better results next year?
I didn't have high hopes for Colorado State this season, and my hopes are not that much higher for next season. Hard to see a winning record at this point, though Pete Thomas has a chance to make that happen.
byu's offensive coaches. stay or go?
I think Doman and Reynolds stay.
Andrea, being from an SEC school. Do you ever hope to become the SEC blogger? So you can stop all this "non-aq" non-sense.
Chris Low is the best at what he does! I would never take his job. The non-AQs need a blogger too, you know!
Get rid of the Conference bowl game agreements! UConn is going to bring 10k maybe.. to the Fiesta Bowl. Boise who is the more deserving team would bring 25k+. They have got to get rid of the tie ins?
Sorry, Jake, it is not going to happen. Those conferences do not want to lose control of the system!
What are the chances Bama is back in the hunt for the NC next year?
Going to be tough without McElroy and even tougher if Julio Jones decides to leave for the NFL. The defense should be much better, though. First and foremost, Alabama needs to find some consistency running the ball. We'll see if Ingram can return to his Heisman form and stay injury-free.
?Cam, I'm really happy for you and I'll let you finish but Colin Kaepernick had one of the best careers of all-time. One of the best careers of all-time!?
Andrea, we've set more individual NCAA records than you can count with both hands and we beat Boise State, so why is it still that everyone wants to talk about the Broncos and not the Wolf Pack?
Sorry, Colin, Boise State started the season ranked in the Top 5 and has more national recognition and is much more polarizing than Nevada. People think of Nevada and shrug their shoulders. People think of Boise State and start flinging daggers left and right.
Where will Jim Harbaugh be coaching in the 2011 regular season?
On a football field. Sorry, that is my smart alecky answer for -- I have no idea.
Big-time SEC: You mean like Fresno St does??? They are not even close to making into a big conference.
With all due respect to President Ron Reagan, "There you go again!" REMEMBER NO WHINING! They can't have it both ways.
It didn't feel like I was whining. You asked!!
Blackmon and Weeden? Will they stay or go? Do you think they should stay or go?
Another incredible game for the duo last night. Wait that wasn't even a game. I see Blackmon as the more likely of the two to leave. But I really do wonder how much of this NFL labor uncertainty is going to factor into decisions.
Ouch! How come BB is covering TCU at the rose bowl and not you? Last time I checked TCU was still a Non-AQ team until 2012.
I was unable to travel to the game. Brian is doing a great job in my place, though!
Could we stop with the Boise questions already. Their season is over. Wolf Pack still has a game to play and already beat Boise. What do you think about the game vs. Boston College? Prediction?
Hey, I just post what is in the queue there Kyle. I have a terrible record this year with predictions, but I like Nevada. I do wonder how all the time off is going to affect the rhythm and timing of the Pistol. Nevada was playing extremely well at the end of the season.
Any ideas on what I should do while suspended next season?
Work on becoming not just a good quarterback ... a GREAT quarterback. The quarterback everybody expected to see when you showed up at Ohio State.
HEy Andrea Happy Early New Year! How do they chose the officiating for the bowl games? and doesn't make sense to have bigger conferences have bigger conference officials? why would MIZZOU and IOWA get a mid-Atlantic conference officials? I think they blew ALOT of calls!
Happy New Year to you! The NCAA chooses the bowl officials, based on recommendations from each conference. One thing to note -- entire crews are not sent to the games. It is more of an "all-star" group of crews. Those MAC refs were among the best in their league.
Low is the best? Come on, are you an SEC homer too? ;) My blogs are awesome!
You're right, Ubbs. What was I thinking?
what if Chris is promoted?
Those decisions are not up to me. Am I hearing SEC fans think I would be an adequate backup even though I have been writing about Boise State all year? My eyes deceive me!
Boise has been doing it for years! Nevada hasn't done anything near what Boise has done. That is why Boise gets talked about more then Nevada.
Look at how many tickets they are not selling for the Fiesta Bowl Uconn fans are a no show. They would have been better off inviting my Broncos to go against OU again we brought 25,000 last time we were in AZ. GO BLUE!!!!
Nevada finally beats Boise State (1st time in 10 years I believe) and has their first good season in years. That's called a flash in the pan - Kyle (Reno). Boise State has had sustained success. There's a difference.
worst place to have a bowl game? boise or siberia?
Ouch, Mike. That is just not nice! Have you been to Boise? It is a very nice city with some really excellent eats.
If Rich Rod survives this year, does he have the talent and ability to do well enough to survive next year?
Great question, Brian. I don't think it's a question about the offense, but the defense. He has got to get a new coordinator in there, and he needs that coordinator and his assistants to work on the fundamentals ... like TACKLING and GAP CONTROL. I know Michigan is young on defense, but my oh my some of the mistakes those players made should just never happen -- if they are coached properly.
Do you think there will be any challenges for the huskers as they move into the Big 10?
You mean aside from playing Wisconsin, Ohio State (at full strength!) and Michigan State?
Andrea, any chance Washington beats Nebraska?
There's always a chance. I wonder whether Nebraska will be motivated going into this game, and whether T-Magic is totally healed up. He was not the same player at the end of the season that he was in the first game vs. Washington. Having said all that, I still think Nebraska wins.
Boise v Georgia next year. How good of a team is that Georgia team going to be. I know about their QB Murray and AJ Green. Is Boise going in as favorites? What will their early season ranking be?PS keep talking about Boise St.
As I said earlier, I have question marks about both teams going into that game. I think Boise State will go in as the favorite because of Kellen Moore. Georgia is a huge wild card to me. I did not expect much from the Bulldogs this year, but have not thought about how much better they could be in 2011. The last thing Boise State needs is the same result that happened the last time it played UGA.
Do you think Nebraska got cheated in the Big 12 considering they got stuck in a bowl with a 6-6 team and that the reffs for the texas a&m game were officiating at the texas game (which we lost) and the iowa state game (we were big favorites but only won by a pt)
Ah yes, the grand old ref conspiracy theory. Do I think Nebraska deserves to be playing a 6-6 team it already destroyed this year? Absolutely not. But bowl selection is based on so many other factors than where a school deserves to go. Did Maryland deserve to be playing 6-6 East Carolina? Umm. No.
Looking at the ticket sales for the fiesta bowl do you think they would have done better inviting BSU BACK TO PLAY OU???
Doesn't work that way. UConn needed a BCS spot because it gets an auto bid as Big East champ. So that means pushing Arkansas out of the Sugar Bowl for UConn? That was never going to happen. It would have made more sense for Stanford to be in Arizona, IMO. Stanford also got an auto bid by virtue of finishing at No. 4. So it's not about Boise vs. UConn but about Boise vs. Arkansas.
Andrea, tell Brian Huskies will win....I have to have a good game for the draft!
You got it, Jake.
True, but we play two of those three at home and we will be better next yr and Brian there is no chance your huskies will beat the huskers
Your Assistant Head Coach leaves for Indiana? How exactly are you big time?
Last I checked, Indiana was in an AQ conference. And being an OC at an AQ conference > assistant at non-AQ.
Don't you think the Ohio State suspensions are harsh
Those five players violated NCAA rules so they should be punished.
I grew up there and yes, I do love it. What I meant was that I am sure northern illinois doesn't want their reward for a sweet season to be to play a bowl game in a frozen late december boise similar to dekalb
Well I am sure they were happy to play in any bowl game. Although keep this in mind -- there is an uncertain future with that game because of Boise State leaving for the Mountain West.
Which will be a stronger conference next yr?(Big Ten ofr SEC)
Man, everyone wants to talk about next season! This season still has several games to go, including the NC game. First I want to see how the conferences do in bowl play.
Cause he was an ASSISTANT head coach and a WR coach. Harsin is one of the best OC in the country. Pease wanted to be a OC and that wasnt happening any time soon at Boise. (Assuming Harsin is going to stay.) BIG TIMES LITTLE BROTHER (SEC)
Andrea, Obviously Boise State fans should be hoping AJ Green declare for the draft after this season. Do you think he says at Georgia or goes to the League?
I think he goes.
Army is a winner -- I'm a service academy fan and particularly an air force fan, but today I was rooting for the Black Knights -- what an accomplishment for them -- it's humbling to think about the expectations and challenges on their shoulders (Army, Navy, and Air Force) as they go forward -- a good day when each is also successful on the sports field --
I could not agree with you more, David. What those young men sacrifice for our country should be a lesson for all the student-athletes in this country. You know it is just the second time EVER that all 3 have 7-plus wins in the same season. Truly remarkable. Those men are going to make a difference in our country, and they should all be commended and saluted.
but 5 games??
Georgia WR AJ Green sat out 4 games for selling a bowl jersey.
Is it really "getting paid" if you get something you don't want or never will use, i.e. college education? The players don't go to college to take advantage of the "gift", it's the only way for them to get to the pros. Pay the players something to get by.
So that means you are in favor of paying every student-athlete on every campus? Who is paying for this?
Why is everyone using other peoples names, it just makes them look stupid...My prediction for the bowl tonite NEB 52 WASH 13
Big score there, Blayze.
Will TCU's defensive front be able to stop the Badger's O-line and their incredible run game?
Completely shutting them down is a lot to ask. But I do think TCU has the players to be able to slow them down and limit their big plays. I think Tolzien is going to be a bigger factor than people are talking about right now. He will have an opportunity to make some plays in the pass game.
If Cam goes pro how many games does AU win next season?
I still think Auburn is a bowl team next season. The Tigers went bowling last year without him. Michael Dyer is fantastic.
Looking at BYU's early season schedule next season (first 5 games) what do you think the Cougars open up with record wise? 2-3? 4-1?
I say 3-2 for now, but I really want to see how this team develops in the spring with a new OC before I finalize that prediction.
Does Brandon Burton come back next year?
My guess is yes.
Woah, we have the same name!!
You must be a super awesome gal, Andrea!
Andrea, do you know what % of college football players go on to play in the NFL? I don't but I would guess only a very small % make it to the league. Why do so many people think ALL college football players are tying to make to the NFL? A vast majority know they wont and value the education they receive.
I think it is about 2 percent.
OK, CJ ... I am going to go with ... Nebraska. I almost had 'em in the national title game this year. Of course, this all depends on Taylor Martinez STAYING at Nebraska.
OK that is all the time we had for today. Mike in Eugene will have to wait until next week for my national championship prediction. Thanks once again for joining me, and a happy, healthy and SAFE new year to all!
