Fantasy NFL with Jim McCormick

Jim McCormick
  (11:00 AM)

Welcome to the last week of the season, few are still playing, and thus chatting, and we'll do our best to get your championship concerns settled.

Mike (South Bend)

I am up by 17, he has Webb (at WR) as only player going tonight. Do I win???

Jim McCormick
  (11:01 AM)

Not sure of your scoring settings, but if they are fairly standard I would think you are cool. Even if Webb has a good game by all accounts, there will likely be a few turnovers mixed in to subdue his numbers.

Stew (LA)

Hey Jim, which two WRs should I start in my championship game between Bowe, Megatron, Tampa Mike, or Lloyd? Thanks

Jim McCormick
  (11:04 AM)

I think Tampa Mike has to get in there as they'll likely still be playing for a January spot unless they're flexed (unlikely with Saints clinching last night). After that I would consider Bowe, as the Chiefs will still be fighting for positioning, if only between the 3rd and 4th seed.

Sparano (Miami)

Im on the hot seat at work, please ease my fantasy stress; J Webb or Harvin at receiver??

Jim McCormick
  (11:06 AM)

Harvin did catch 4 passes from Webb last week, but I'd likely lean on Webb here, even with the turnover potential.

Jason (Phoenix)

Finals. Up by 30. Opponent has Vick. 6 points for passing TD's. Thinking about a 50/50 chance of winning. What do you think?

Jim McCormick
  (11:08 AM)

Best case is building a big early lead and having LeSean and Harrison run the game out. I'm not sure Vick will need to be the entire offense tonight, which should bode well for those hoping he goes sub-30 fantasy-wise.

Nick (TX)

When a fumbled shotgun snap like last night's occurs, I thought the QB was always charged with a center to QB exchange but Ryan was not...what gives?

Jim McCormick
  (11:11 AM)

That's a good point Nick, I've never seen a center charged with the fumble and believe you are right that a QB is charged in such cases. Was looking through the NFL rules but it seems you are correct. We shall see if there is a correction.

Tom (Anaheim)

Any chance Kolb plays in the 2nd half to rest/avoid injury to Vick? Phil does not have much to play for with a playoff spot clinched already.

Jim McCormick
  (11:12 AM)

The Eagles have everything to play for in the sense that they need to win and have the Packers knock of the Bears and they'll net a coveted bye week. I think the only two ways we see Kolb is if Vick gets banged up or the Birds take an insurmountable lead, but then again, they just saw what happened to the Giants.

Sean (Ohio)

Over/Under 1 million fanatsy matchups being decided tonight?

Jim McCormick
  (11:14 AM)

I would guess under, but might be better to gauge it by percentage of players given how many fantasy football teams are out there these days. I simply don't like playing in Week 17, you are subjected to so many "real" elements when in Week 16 it truly is a different landscape.

Bob (Seattle)

Who wins? He has Vick and is up by 10. I have Peterson, Akers, and Philly D.

Jim McCormick
  (11:15 AM)

You are in a good spot; I think the Philly defense has a big outing and Peterson should give the smallish front seven some problems. And I'm aware that's a contradiction of sorts, but the Philly defense will get their numbers even if Peterson does well.

Bob (Philly)

Who whould have thought two of the best offenses in the NFC would punt the ball a zillion times...such a frustrating game for fantasy non IDP

Jim McCormick
  (11:17 AM)

Yeah, it was a conservative and methodical game by most accounts. I bet it would be a more prolific game if it were the playoffs and the playbooks were wide open, but both played it close this time.

AP (Philly)

What do I do?

Jim McCormick
  (11:17 AM)

You run violently. That, and I think 100-total yards and a score is very possible.

Gregory (Mystic)

I am dying here...I am down 11.5 with either McCoy or Webb as flex tonight.......I am the first chance our league has to overthrow our Phil Jacksoin streaking comish....HELP A FELLOW IRISHMAN OUT!!!!

Jim McCormick
  (11:18 AM)

McCoy is your man, he's a nice Irish boy and will get the job done for you as the Birds look to stave off the Minny rush with some good work for the ground game.

James (NYC)

Im up by 3.2 and I have Vick left, do I bench him tonight? My only concern is a stat change later in the week.

Jim McCormick
  (11:21 AM)

If it's a wrap, as in no Week 17, I'm sitting Vick. Pore over the box scores of your relevant players first to make sure things seem to add up. The only way I'd be concerned is if your league awards inflated points versus normal leagues, as in 5 points a sack or something. Most stat corrections involve tackles/sacks awarded to specific players (IDP concerns) or minimal yardage adjustments (like Mendy losing one yard last week).

Confused for tonight (Titletown?)

Hey Jim I have seen you say both AP and Mccoy are good plays tonight, which one would you start tonight?

Jim McCormick
  (11:21 AM)

I'd go with McCoy between the two; reasoning is that his team will likely be up early and often and he should get more favorable work. It's close, but I prefer the back on the better team, especially given how often they lean on him in the screen game.

singletary (somewhere soon)

I want players!! not sitters!! We play the game to win. Cmon man.

Jim McCormick
  (11:22 AM)

A little Singeltary and Herm remix.

GrandMaster B (Detroit)

Who is Jim Macormick? I aint ever heard of no jim Macormick, you just go ahead and tell me why i should care what jim macormack gots to say.

Jim McCormick
  (11:23 AM)

Stop it Dad.

Bob (Philly)

Any chance we see the old man tonight instead of Webb?

Jim McCormick
  (11:24 AM)

Without passing the initial concussion test he would need to pass it and then participate in a practice in order to take the second independent concussion test. So the answer is, who knows? This is Brett Favre, he could have them set up a "practice" and be declared a go. I'm somewhat kidding. I honestly think it's Joe Webb throughout.

Chris (Miami)

Enough with the who wins questions! Just watch and find out, thats the fun! Week 17 are Brady and Charles still worth playing on potentially limited touches, or should I roll with Garrard and Blount? (PPR)

Jim McCormick
  (11:27 AM)

Brady will likely get the 3rd preseason game treatment and play the first half or so and then rest. This is just assumption, but they literally have nothing to play for besides keeping a rhythm going and avoiding too much time off. With Charles, I think I'd lean to Blount if only because we know he'll get a feature workload, while Charles might be prone to get limited touches given the nature of the position and the depth the team boasts in the backfield.

Otto (CA)

Do you enjoy the soaring vocals of Reuben Studdard?

Jim McCormick
  (11:27 AM)

Prefer a Reuben sandwich.

James (in fantasty limbo)

Am I getting jobbed by the NFL changing the date of the game? I play against Vick and think he would have been hurt by the weather Sunday night (not much fantasty production). What gives tonight? run run run or pass pass pass?

Jim McCormick
  (11:30 AM)

My take on the game being moved is that it was equal parts money and safety. Safety for the 50K or so plus that would have been there, if even that, and the issues with them getting out of the sports complex/parking lot etc. The money issue was that if they were to move it they would want exclusive broadcast. I think it is a boon to Vick's production that he gets a clean field and little wind to navigate. I think he has a very solid game, just not the explosive dominant numbers we've seen the past two weeks.

Ed Rendell (PA)

We are a nation of wusses. I agree let the elements be part of the game.

Jim McCormick
  (11:31 AM)

The funniest part about Rendell saying that is that he hasn't driven a car in 20 years.

Pete (Orlando)

Flex me to a win tonight, AP or DJ?

Jim McCormick
  (11:32 AM)

AP, just a much safer baseline and a similar if even better upside.

Ed Rendell's limo driver (PA)

Or tipped.

Mike (Getting Ready for Week 17)

In week 17....Jacoby Jones, Bowe, Holmes, Thomas, Floyd.....which 3?

Jim McCormick
  (11:34 AM)

Can't trust Floyd, would think he's done given the hamstring ailments. If Andre Johnson is out, which I would assume so given the record, then Jones becomes a nice play once again. Third? I'd go with Bowe in hopes that he can get some early work done for you.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Is the game on TV tonight?

Jim McCormick
  (11:35 AM)

Yeah, unlike the Minny/NYG game that was local a few weeks back this is a national NBC game.

ted (wi)

wrong mcmormick, ap is not safer given his injury

Jim McCormick
  (11:37 AM)

AP is playing, that much we know, so it's difficult to decipher just how the injury concerns factor in. I say safer, because DeSean is about as boom/bust as they come, and as an Eagles fan I've seen the smallish and depleted front seven get gashed before, by lesser talents than Peterson. It's just my take Ted, that Peterson, a running back likely to get 15+ touches, is a safer play than a premier deep threat.

Mike (Getting Ready for Week 17)

I liked Rivers comments about understanding how special it is to play an NFL game and that he will play next week. I hope a few of his team mates heard him.

Jim McCormick
  (11:38 AM)

I agree, very good to hear that he's aware that every game in this league matters, and every check cashes.

Jason (Phoenix)

Ted disagrees with your opinion. I am sure that never happens when giving fantasy advice. Come on Ted. Start who you want.

Jim McCormick
  (11:38 AM)

I agree, start who you want.

Kyle (Philly)

Are you a baseball guy too? I have started dreaming about the warm weather. It is the only thing that will keep me warm tonight at the game. It actually still is very, very windy here. Maybe we should cancel the game and whomever has Vick, Peterson, etc get zeroes? Wouldnt that be hillarious! Baseball, 3 keepers are Pujols, Cabrera and now Carlos Gonzalez. Would you trade one for someone like Halladay to diversify a little?

Jim McCormick
  (11:41 AM)

I covered baseball for Matt Berry's site for several years and have done real MLB stringer work around the Northeast for several seasons. I don't cover any MLB fantasy here, solely football, but I can take a swing. Having the two elite 1B can be tricky lineup wise but I assume you have a corner infield spot or utility to get both in there. I would shop Cargo first for an elite arm; I love what he did last season, no doubt, but the other offensive commodities you have are clearly more established.

Dave (CA)

How bout seeing Ramsey?

Jim McCormick
  (11:43 AM)

Gordon or Patrick? Because I'd rather have Gordon on my fantasy roster. But honestly, I think if Pat makes an appearance we're in the midst of a blowout or a Webb injury, or both.

David (Michigan)

In the championship, thanks to you! Do I need to worry about my Eagles (D. Jackson & J. Maclin) and Chiefs (J. Charles) next week?

Jim McCormick
  (11:44 AM)

Definitely not concerned about the Eagles with a bye on the mind. I endorsed Blount over Charles earlier only because KC has little mobility in the playoff scenarios (3rd at best, 4th at worst). But if I didn't have a quality alternative I'd be fine going with Charles, who should still get work, only concern is limited work.

J.B. (PA)

Gordon Ramsey would be a more motivational QB. He'd be calling the O-Linemen donkeys and stuff.

Jim McCormick
  (11:45 AM)

Very true.

bob ( obx, nc)

Hey Jim. I know you say week 1 play AP, or CJ. But how do you go about picking a whole lineup correctly week in and out with all the players and considering the teams they face? Is it just stats or is it a combo of things? Still keep up the good work.

Jim McCormick
  (11:46 AM)

It's more so just a value chart, or a ranking system. Consider each element; matchup, health, history and add in your gut feeling. It's also just plan luck as we are all subjected to what actually goes down on the gridiron.

David (Michigan)

What if the Eagles lose tonight though? Could this put them in shutdown mode for week 17?

Jim McCormick
  (11:48 AM)

Possibly, they'd then be the 3 seed for sure, with the proud NFC West champ at 4. I don't see them losing, though, they've handled Minny very well over the past several seasons. Eagles are 5-0 vs. Vikings (includ. playoffs) with four double-digit victories. Avg. margin of victory: 14.8.

Max (Illinois)

I know I'm gonna win my league, and I win every fantasy league I'm in, no matter what sport, so should I just quit?

Jim McCormick
  (11:49 AM)

I'd stop competing with 9-year olds (no offense to 9-year olds).

Emily (Boston)

I'm in a bind! Do I start Gerhart or Harrison tonight? Are either of them going to put up any points??

Jim McCormick
  (11:49 AM)

Deep league I assume. I'd go with Toby if only because we can guess he'll get some work.

David (Michigan)

Thanks for the answers! I love this week 17 "less chatters" thing...been on these chats all year and never had any questions answered. I could get used to this.

Jim McCormick
  (11:50 AM)

I think there are nine people in here that just keep changing there names.

Sean (Orlando)

hey JimIm up by 2 points he has vick, I have Eagles DST do I have a shot or dont even watch the game tonight?

Jim McCormick
  (11:50 AM)

You have a shot, I've seen far crazier things happen. I won a league once on a last-second hook-and-ladder play.

Greg (Denver)

Just do me a favor and tell me Vick puts up 5 points tonight so I can win the Shiva!

Jim McCormick
  (11:51 AM)

You will be screaming for joy it seems, and no fear-....can't say that one.

Jason (Phoenix)

Is it wrong that I ask my 3 year old for fantasy lineup decisions? Problem is, he just repeats the last name I ask him.

Jim McCormick
  (11:52 AM)

I bet it works out better than some other approaches. It's the Lisa Simpson gambling theory.

Mike (South Bend)

Funny comment about the 9 year olds! My 12 year old son just beat my 46 year old buddy in the championship!!

Jim McCormick
  (11:53 AM)

Dude, I lost to my 13-year old cousin last season in our family league. He reminds me of this often.

Jim McCormick
  (11:53 AM)

AP

Bob (MI)

Who gets more fantasy points Vick or Akers? Championship will depend on the outcome?

Jim McCormick
  (11:54 AM)

I'm gonna guess the best athlete will win out, and while Akers is a black belt, I'm gonna go with the kid from V. Tech.

Chad (Land of week 17 championships)

Roddy White safe to start next week?

Jim McCormick
  (11:55 AM)

Hard to say, they won't be playing for anything but I would think he still gets first half work. "Safe" in Week 17 is a weakened concept.

Matt (Toronto, ON)

I have McCoy and need 11.54 from him for the win. Do you like my chances?

Jim McCormick
  (11:55 AM)

Love them, actually.

Lou (Montreal)

Hi Jim, early keeper question for next year... I can only keep 2 in a PPR league with OP position. I have Vick, Foster, Charles as my top 3 with Bradshaw, Lloyd, Miles, Schaub. Which 2 do I keep?

Jim McCormick
  (11:56 AM)

I think you can restock at QB so I'd let Schaub loose and retain Miles Austin and Bradshaw.

Sean (New York)

2 keepers for next year out of Vick, Foster, Rice, S. Jackson, Roddy White, G. Jennings, Brady, Nicks. Who do I keep?

Jim McCormick
  (11:57 AM)

Vick, clearly, and Foster. Hard to throw back White, Nicks and Jennings, but having a top-flight QB and RB is the call.

Jason (Phoenix)

Top 3 draft picks next year?

Jim McCormick
  (11:59 AM)

Will come down to Peterson, Foster and Johnson. Not sure a clear #1 emerges until later in the summer. People will forgive CJ on account of the QB issues etc, and if they were to somehow resolve that then he's firmly back in the mix.

Matt (Toronto, ON)

Thanks for the advice and Happy New Year!

Fighting GNATs (Raleigh, NC)

I believe ATL and New Orleans are still playing for the division and a bye dude.

Jim McCormick
  (12:00 PM)

This be true, good catch GNATs.

Jim McCormick
  (12:01 PM)

Thanks for checking in everyone. I honestly believe the Tuesday night game saved this chat from utter nerdery, if that's possible. Good luck all, hope you get your win and I'll see you Thursday afternoon for another chat filled with the same 11 dudes.
