Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (11:52 AM)

Happy New Year Sportsnation! Hoe you've had a great start to your holiday week. I'm coming here live from the new Thorpe offices in Clearwater, FL. It's quiet and clean, and I'm ready to rock in the new year in style."Shot...or killed"? (Seeing this movie with my dad and baby bro tonight. Dad is a huge John Wayne fan).

Chad (Purcellville, VA)

Mr. Thorpe, Who should the Wizards trade (get rid of) next and who should they keep?

David Thorpe
  (11:52 AM)

Blatche is so talented, but he's not the best guy to have setting the culture next to Wall.

Ryan (MN)

Do you know what contraction means? What are your thoughts on the subject?

David Thorpe
  (11:53 AM)

You mean like "can't" or "won't" stop saying silly things? I'm not smart enough to have a good answer to the overall question, other than I think we need more teams, not less.

Christopher Nduati (South Bend ,IN 46613)

I know Kevin love is an Allstar because of the number he is put up and a defense player of the year.

David Thorpe
  (11:54 AM)

Not sure what you mean, but he is all-star material to me.

Chad (Purcellville, VA)

Mr. Thorpe, Does Blatche have any value on the trade market? If so, what could he return?

David Thorpe
  (11:54 AM)

With a playoff team in need of a starting 4, yes I think so. Has to be a strong culture around him.

Tom (Sacramento)

Depressed Kings fan here. Should the Kings consider trading Evans this off season? The guy doesn't make his teammates better and approaches games like Iverson without AI's talent and jumpshot.

David Thorpe
  (11:56 AM)

Never trade a guy who's value has dropped. Funny, I was thinking Iverson when watching Evans last night. But I wouldn't quit on him. Give him and his team some time.

Chad (Purcellville, VA)

Mr. Thorpe, Will John Wall ever be considered in the same class as Paul, Williams, Rose, and Westbrooke?

David Thorpe
  (11:56 AM)

It's certainly possible, and maybe probable.

Tom (Houston)

David, how could Kevin Martin not be an all-star? He's been our best player and we're 10-3 this month. He's carried us so many times, and been a great finisher as well. Scola is great too. What will happen?

David Thorpe
  (11:57 AM)

Lots of guys in the running for all-star in the west. Someone has to be left out.

Julius (Atlanta)

only time will tell, but do the Lakers look like they may not make it out of the west this year. In your opinion, please.

David Thorpe
  (11:57 AM)

My guess is they'll look much different in time.

Chuck (Chicago, IL)

With the Bulls scoring options so minimal with Rose and Boozer scoring half of their team's points on a nightly basis, who do you see the Bulls going after to improve in that area?

David Thorpe
  (11:58 AM)

Courtney Lee, maybe Rudy Fernandez.

Ray (San Antonio)

Why do you think Blair is struggling this season. I expected him to be a double double machine but most nights he can't even get 20 minutes. Is he that much of a defensive liability?

David Thorpe
  (11:59 AM)

I think it's more offense than defense. Just can't make shots.

Eric (Orlando, FL )

How do you like the changes for the Orlando Magic?

David Thorpe
  (11:59 AM)

Fine for now, but I don't like the Arenas deal at all.

John (San Antonio)

Hey Thorpedo. Durant, Dirk, Pau, and Melo are all-star locks. Out of Love, Griffin, Duncan and Millsap, who else makes the team? Do they just put Duncan in as the backup center since there aren't any good options there anyways?

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Love all day.

Rafael (houston)

i sense a trade coming to the Rockets involving a big man am i right?

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Probably.

Jobin (Hawaii)

Which player becomes a starter and stays a starter, first - Marcus Thorton or Kleiza?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Thornton, and it should have happened a month ago.

Rachel (Hattiesburg)

Hi David, with Lee and Curry back and with Monta playing at such a high level, is this going to get the Warriors moving forward this year? Seems health has played a factor and are back to playing nice ball.

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

I like that 3some an awful lot, on offense. Curry and Lee both very good to great passers.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

The way that the New York Knicks are playing right now, do you think that the Knicks will play in the Playoffs this season?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Yes.

Andrew (New York City)

Has John Wall's start and stop rookie season raised durability concerns in your mind?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Not at all. No reason to worry about that at all.

Justin (Indiana)

What got into Eric Gordon? Is he an all star this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

No, but he's been very very good. He's so tough to guard on the dribble drive.

Eddie (Fort Worth, Tx)

Should Mavs fans start buying into this team that can play defense or should we wait until the playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

I think they are for real, as long as they keep getting good shooting from their role players.

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

What do you think of the Suns side of the trade so far? They aren't winning and still overloaded at one position.

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

I can not see what their plan is. Not impressed so far.

Joseph (Los Angeles)

Now that the young Clippers are starting to click, with Gordon having a breakout year and Blake Griffin being the best thing since sliced bread, doesn't it seem like this would have been the best place for LeBron? Sure, Wade and Bosh are bigger names than Gordon and Griffin (for now), but they don't fit as well with James. Gordon can shoot, Blake can finish, and both can play off of LeBron, unlike Wade. Not to mention that the Heat don't have a solid point guard, any bench players under 40, or many capable bigs, while the Clips have a solid center in Kaman, a still capable, if aging, Baron Davis, and some nice young pieces in Aminu and Bledsoe. This would be a much more complete team than the Heat, even with their run right now. Imagine pick and rolls with any combination of LeBron/Blake/Gordon/Davis. Unstoppable. And don't even get me started on watching those four run the break together...let's just say it would make LeBron and Wade's breakaways feel like a high school game. Their record may not show it at the moment, but this young Clips team has LeBron regretting taking his talents south, right?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I've always felt that Bron wanted to play first and foremost with Wade. Since he plays in Miami, that's where Bron needs to be.

Rafael (houston)

any suggestions on who the Rockets are targeting in a trade?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Vareajao makes the most sense, but I don't know what they are thinking.

Matt (Toronto, ON)

Tyreke played well last night but drops a not so subtle hint that he's going to have surgery. Aren't rest or surgery his only alternatives for his ailment?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

This is the strangest story of the season. First it's his foot, then he says he's afraid he may twist his ankle, then it's his personal issues. He talks with his coach for 2 minutes before a post game press conference, and then his mom a few nights later, and all is resolved as he scores 32 and looked fine (he's looked fine physically for a week). Then the laser treatment stuff pops up. I have no clue what is happening, and I'd guess neither do the Kings.

Josh (NYC)

How high is Fields' ceiling ? Love him to death.

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Solid starter, not likely an all-star.

Jerry (Cleveland, Ohio)

Do you think Kemba Walker of UConn is worthy being the No.1 pick in the 2011 NBA Draft?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I'm studying him tomorrow for my draft blog. Tune in.

Jakey (LA)

Wouldn't a Chris Kaman for Tayshaun Prince make sense for both the Clippers and Pistons

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Not enough for Clips.

Saul (Oakland)

Warriors' Udoh reminds me of Okafor and PJ Brown combo. I think his cieling might be like 12 and 12. Do you think the GS Execs made a good draft though I realize it's early to tell?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

I think he'll average better than 12 ppg.

Az (Chicago)

With the way Kirk Hinrich has been playing in Wall's absence, do you think they should package him with Blatche while his value is high?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Now your talking. Chicago bound?

NICK (MINNIE)

Do you really need to ask if K. Love should be an all star?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Only because of their record.

Jon (Ny)

What is going on with Carmelo? Do you see him landing in NY/NJ/other? Have any percentages?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

I'd say the field looks better than NJ/NY combo.

Billy (Houston)

keep hearing that the Rockets are looking down under for a 5. Is there any talent down there or is that why they are looking to trade yao?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

You mean in Australia?

Tim ((Katy, TX))

Charles Barkley said last week on the Dan Patrick Show that Kobe is #6 all-time, followed by Bird and Magic at 7 and 8. Your thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I like Chuck. He's funny.

Rafonda (Orlando)

JJ Redick has been scoring the ball at a great clip the past month - shooting over 54% from downtown this month. Do you think he will become a viable NBA starter?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I've always believed he could be a starter for a playoff team. Still do.

Joshua (Portland)

would blatche be a good fit at center with the clippers?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Not bad, actually.

mary (new jersey)

i was one of the 20 people who bothered to go see orlando vs nets last night. arenas looks out of shape and totally unexplosive! the magic will be crying in 1-2 years when they realize that they will not be able to get rid of him and he will never regain his all star form!

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Hard to imagine they'll find someone to take him off their hands, but we all said that a year ago too.

Dan (OC)

What is wrong with Gordon Hayward? He's gotten some decent minutes lately but seems to have no confidence with his shot even when he's wide open...is this something that can be fixed or are we looking at Adam Morrison II?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

The comparison's to Ammo are scary. But he's a very different player who just had a bad start. Yes, he has no confidence.

Greg (NYC)

I know Knicks fans are infatuated with Carmelo but wouldn't Walsh be better off looking for a center and backup pg? Gallo and Wil may not be at Melo's level but they're pretty damn good...

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

If I was Walsh, I would not trade for Melo.

Boris (Germany)

I always enjoyed watching J-Kidd, what is it, that makes him so special even today?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

He lives to get people the ball.

Larry Brown (Charlotte)

Should I have just waited out the season? Or take this time to look for a new job?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Larry, nobody would ever try to advise you.

Brandon (Portland)

With the preseason talk of Rudy Fernandez to Chicago, doesn't sending home town kid Ronnie Brewer to Rip City make sense? Especially with his high shooting percentage & better defense probably welcomed by the defensive oriented Nate McMillan?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

No, Portland needs more perimeter threats.

Jason Sleik-Gay (Stevens Point, WI)

Why wont the NBA just let teams play a true zone defense? Why do they have to have the defensive 3 seconds rule in there?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Because they are too effective at slowing or stopping other teams, and the games would get stagnant. That's why zones should be outlawed for kids under 14.

Matt (Chicago)

Have you seen the figher? Was it as good as simmons says?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Negative. Likely never will.

Nick (Chicago)

How do you like Thibs as a head coach so far?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Two thumbs up.

Cassius (Minneapolis, MN)

"Can't do nothin' for ya, son." True Grit, FTW! How about those T-Wolves with the two-game win streak? Does Rubio make them better? Or should Kahn package his rights for a better wing or one?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

T Wolves have been much improved all year. I'd trade RR only if the deal looked great. No reason to bail on him otherwise.

Justin R. (Rice, MN)

Has it become obvious that the Timberwolves taking Wes Johnson over Cousins was the right selection? Johnson has been shooting the ball well lately and Cousins is a headcase...

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Not remotely. If they didn't like Cousins, trading down was the answer. Could have added a pick or two and taken Fields.

Nick (Chicago)

In terms of head coaches: who is the best teacher and who is the best game strategist?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

I'd lean to Phil as a teacher and Pop as a strategist, but there are a few others who fit those molds.

Ryan (NJ)

Spoelstra deserves massive amounts of credit. Had a very tall ego-management hill to climb in addition to the X's and O's and media dissection. I know the talent is there, but he has to get COY consideration at this juncture.

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Great call.

jason (philadelphia)

do you see iguodala getting traded?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Not now. Maybe in Feb if the team starts dropping more games.

Africa (Brooklyn)

Am I the only Knicks fan who still wants a new coach?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Probably.

Miguel (Florida)

Do people out there actually believe Durant is a better player than James?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Probably. That was my answer to the last question. Yes, to this question.

Jason Sleik-Gay (Stevens Point, WI)

In terms of head coaches: who is the worst teacher and who is the worst game strategist?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Did you see the Clippers and Kings game last night? Comedy of errors.

Dan (Brooklyn)

Ideal team-coach-culture fit for Blatche?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Believe it or not...Orlando.

Brandon (Portland)

Is it possible Kevin Love could be traded by the deadline?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

It would be shocking.

John (Long Island)

Do you think Carmelo Anthony will test free agency?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

I do not.

dan (snowy syracuse)

Coach Thorpe - If you were forced to pick one NBA team (solely based on the roster) that you had to coach for the remainder of season, who would it be and why?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Tough question. Miami would be fin because that team is built organically on love and unselfishness. But I'd lean to the Kings or Cavs, two awful teams that would be fun to salvage the season. But I have no interest in doing this, just to be clear.

Paul (Portland, OR)

As I've watched the Roy-less Blazers over the last couple of weeks, something strikes me. I know McMillan is a coach that prefers a slow, steady half court offense. But I wonder if they need to change to a more up-tempo team. They seem to thrive in that setting (except in cases of last night where Aldridge was on fire).

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

You're just now seeing this?

peter (los angeles)

What do you think of Eric Gordon, now that his 3-point shot is falling? Where do you think of his future prospects? Is he a top shooting guard in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

I still see him as too small to be in the top tier, but he's a dynamic talent who could be a very good player on a great team.

John (Cali)

What's wrong with Artest's game this year? He seems to have regressed big time in the triangle. The Lakers are playing 4 on 5 offensively when he's on the court...

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

He was bad last year too, except he made some big shots in game 7.

David (Orange County, CA)

Is Kobe overrated?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

He is for anyone who ranks him as the 6th best player of all time.

Jim (Akron)

"the team is built organically?" Does organic mean sign the three best players and then add aging veterans to compliment them?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

No. The 3 stars chose to play together and share the spotlight, for less money than they were worth, so that guys like Miller and UD could be signed. The old guys there will be their demise, in my opinion.

Chris (Santa Barbara, CA)

Do you see Yao moving? Have to think his economic impact makes him untradeable.

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

His economic impact makes dough for the league, which is shared equally among all 30 teams.

A Kleinschmidt (Minneapolis)

Is it fair to say that a team should have picked Landry Fields? Of course in hindsight it appears a lot of teams missed on this guy but every analyst ripped the Knicks for the selection on draft nightWas he rated as draft-worthy on any other team's draft board?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Everything is fair. It's a business. And I for one never saw WJ as a top 4 talent in any draft.

Jeremy (Rochester, NY)

I read on a popular scouting site that Landry Fields is only producing like he is becuase of D'Antoni's system is perfect for him. Do you think he would have a similar impact on other teams?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

There are plenty of wings who would not make 38% of their 3's and grab 7+ boards a game in any system.

Jeremy (Rochester, NY)

Do you expect a lot of college players to stay in school with the lockout looming?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

I do not.

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

I do not.

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

I do not.

Tim (MN)

What is your favorite sport not including basketball?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Growing up it was football, of course. Now it's whatever sport my son is involved with, and ballet.

NickyFresh (Oregon)

Hey thorpe, love the chats. Why do people think Eric Gordon is too small to be a superstar at his position? He's 6'3" yeah, but he has a 6'9" wingspan. Doesn't that make up for his lack of neck?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Watch him against bigger guards. Good point though about wingspan-it does help him a great deal.

Jason Sleik-Gay (Stevens Point, WI)

Bird is overrated, not Kobe. Bird only won 3 titles with 3 hall of famers starting in the front court with him his whole career. How can you not put Kobe ahead of him?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Bird made Parrish and Kevin, trust me. I was a Laker fan to the 10th degree and Bird was simply phenomenal.

Cliff (Sac)

I think Kevin Love is awesome, but Defensive POY he is NOT!

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Agreed.

Dave (Los Angeles)

Can Dwight Howard learn/use the sky hook as his go-to move? Seems like with his frame and hops it would be pretty devastating.

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

He does use a one legged hook now. Not as pretty as Cap's.

Lance Williams (Los Angeles)

I have been a NBA fan for over 30 years, so I don't put much stock in early season games ; however, the Lakers must beat San Antonio tonight to send a message to the league.

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Are you trying to be ironical?

John (Dallas)

What can be done about Brendan Haywood's attitude and poor play? Are there any teams that would consider taking him and his contract right now?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

I think the whole league is on to him.

Sam (Minnesota)

We haven't seen a guy like Kevin Love in a league in a while,he will only get better...and there is no chance he is leaving the Twin Cities! He loves it here, he is embraced and definitely should be an All-Star with his dominance on the glass against almost any team.

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

The same could have been written about KG years ago. Little is permanent in this business.

John (Dallas)

Are the Rockets desperate enough at C to think about dealing for Haywood?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

No.

Katie (Twin Cities)

Am I the only one who thinks Hollinger's rankings are completely messed up???

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Pretty much. Remember, they are very fluid.

Dave (Phoenix)

True Grit - Great, great movie. Saw it on Christmas. (I'm from Phoenix - nothing exciting going on out here NBA wise - so I've got no basketball related questions.)

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

True. Thanks, looking forward to going. I have to run. Thanks everyone for a great 2010. Please be safe this weekend.
