Chat with Bruce Feldman

  (2:23 PM)

Greetings from AZ. Just finished Media Day.. let's get to it.

Joey (SC)

Do you see South Carolina getting Jadeveon Clowney? I can't see him leaving the state. Also, who would get the double teams, Clowney or Devin Taylor?

Bruce feldman
  (2:24 PM)

I do see him ending up there for the reasons you said. He's got ties to the program. Awesome talent. He'll get a lot of attention. BTW, he and So Caro led the mailbag this week.http://es.pn/e2I4gp

Tyler (Georgia)

Bruce, Do you think there is any chance AJ Green returns for his Senior season next year?

Bruce feldman
  (2:25 PM)

My hunch is he leaves, but last night, I talked to someone at ESPN who knows that program better than me who thinks theres a chance he stays.

Curt (Indiana)

Bruce, now that Aaron Lynch has decommitted to FSU and is visiting Notre Dame Jan. 14th how do you like their chances?

Bruce feldman
  (2:26 PM)

Not sure. Was surprised he might be doing a 180. Curious how the change happened since it's not like there was a personnel change...Id say Kelly and ND have a legit shot.

Chad (Homewood, al)

Why do you think there is so much attention in Glendale for wr coach trooper Taylor? You think he holds the bag?

Bruce feldman
  (2:28 PM)

All I know is he holds the towel. Me and a few other writers ended up talking to him about a bunch of different stuff today. If you follow me on Twitter, you've seen some of the quotes. He has a rep as a good recruiter and he is a very interesting guy.

Dave (Midtown)

Is Blaine Gabbert really the #1 QB coming out in the draft? What current pro is he similar to?

Bruce feldman
  (2:30 PM)

Not sure. If Newton does come out and I think he will, he's quite a talent. Gabbert has good size, a good arm, can run and is very driven... Trying to think of a comparison. He is a 4.5/4.6 kind of guy.. not many QBs in the NFL are that tall and that fast.

Ed (Michigan)

Who do most (intelligent) Michigan fans want as their next coach?: Anyone but Les Miles.

Bruce feldman
  (2:31 PM)

They want Harbaugh. They might have to settle for Les or Hoke.

Gabe (Columbus, OH)

Any chance of Les Miles ending up at Michigan?

Bruce feldman
  (2:32 PM)

I do think there's a decent shot. He and Brandon go back to a different era at Michigan and he has a special feeling for that place. Maybe he feels like he has accomplished a lot at LSU and would be a better fit in Ann Arbor.

Prashant (Winston-Salem, NC)

What do you think about the "Congrats TCU on the Rose Bowl Win - Little Sisters of the Poor" billboards that went up in Columbus, OH this week? Has Gee learned his lesson?

Bruce feldman
  (2:33 PM)

Gee? No. He'll keep popping off. He can't help himself.

Will (Reno, NV)

Kaepernick is that tall and faster. Not quite as big but don't you think an NFL training program could take care of that easy enough?

Bruce feldman
  (2:34 PM)

He is, but I meant in the NFL already. Alex Smith runs pretty well is almost as tall but I think Gabbert has a much different demeanor.

Vic (L.A)

Do you think Lane Kiffin regrets leaving the vols?

Bruce feldman
  (2:35 PM)

No, I think he knew he wasn't going to win any SEC title in a year or two regardless. Some people just feel a better connection to certain places.

Pradeep (Chicago)

Are you getting tired of hearing about Harbaugh yet? But seriously, while I agree he has done a good job at Stanford what makes him think he is worthy of 8-9 mil in the NFL?

Bruce feldman
  (2:38 PM)

Who is worthy of 8-9 million a year though. What Harbaugh did at Stanford in the last few yrs is unreal. He is something. He talks brash and he backs it up better than anyone I can think of in sports these days. They shouldve marketed shirts there: on the front "What's my deal?" on the back: "I back up everything I say. Do you?"

CC (Atlanta)

Is there any doubt Richt will be getting his walking papers after this year? I hate that UGA is drawing this out. Meanwhile we lose all the good instate recruits this yr.

Bruce feldman

Bruce feldman
  (2:38 PM)

He's earned the right to rebuild it, but I am skeptical he can regain the momentum at this point although the SEC East is there for the taking.

Nick D (Tampa)

Bruce just so you know Lynch has not de-committed from FSU per him at practice today.

Bruce feldman
  (2:39 PM)

Thanks.. thought I saw on Twitter this morning from ND reporters he was thinking of coming back.

Sooner Junkie (OK)

OU returning 18 starters. Will they be pre-season #1?

Bruce feldman
  (2:40 PM)

That's my guess too.

Lisa (Washington)

How long will it take for Pitt to hire someone new?

Bruce feldman
  (2:40 PM)

I'd think they have to have someone by Monday the latest but they know they can't screw this up again.

Blake (Abilene, TX)

New Texas Coaches WR's-Wyatt A+,DT's Bo Davis A ,DC- Manny Diaz A , S&C- Bennie Wylie A and now OC- Brian Harsin! Wow! I think it fair to say Mack Brown brought in an excelent coaching staff. Proving once again he is one of the best coaches/recruiters in america.

Bruce feldman
  (2:42 PM)

Agree, but am not surprised.. look at what they can offer and Mack is a great guy to work for from what I hear. Not all top HCs are that way.

Jeff (Philly)

Shouldn't Pitt have just kept the Mustache? I mean c'mon, this is embarrassing to alums like me. Even Maryland fans are making fun of me.

Bruce feldman
  (2:42 PM)

Agree, but am not surprised.. look at what they can offer and Mack is a great guy to work for from what I hear. Not all top HCs are that way.

Bruce feldman
  (2:43 PM)

It's weird... strong history, good facilities, good recruiting base, a conference you should be the favorite in, but it has a bad AD and that is undermines a lot of the earlier stuff.

Weezel (Orlando)

How you feel about Jimbo, EJ and the Noles in the future? Can they have long term success?

Bruce feldman
  (2:44 PM)

I'd feel fantastic if I'm a Noles fan right now. Thumped UM and UF and won the bow. OK so you got hammered by OU and lost to VT. You have a group of standout recruiters and the two arch rivals are in transition.

Sammy (Columbus)

Why hasn't ESPN been mentioning that the MWC just won its fourth Bowl Challenge Cup?

Bruce feldman
  (2:45 PM)

I don't know. I'm supposed to hike up a mountain here later with the PR head of the MWC I'll ask him.

Cosmo (Anytown, USA)

If/When Bradley leaves Penn State, how does that effect the Lions? Also, I assume that his leaving would not take him out of the running for the Penn State HC job once (if ever) JoePa retires (or ascends)?

Bruce feldman
  (2:47 PM)

Not sure. If Bradley gets it and has 7-8 good years and gets Pitt in the BCS a few times and then maybe Joe is ready to step down, he'll at least have shown he's more ready for the top job.

Frank (Ann Arbor)

I think Harbaugh isn't coming, but is there a decent chance our next coach is Petersen, Patterson, or Gruden. Or is it just down to Hoke or Miles?

Bruce feldman
  (2:49 PM)

I don't see Petersen leaving Boise. Gary P now knows he can get into the BCS and has a chip on his shoulder to win the BCS title from TCU. He's feisty like that. I wrote on Wed why I think Jon G may be tempted for Michigan. Would be fascinated how he'd in college.

Mike (Canton, OH)

Tell Sammy because ESPN has millions of reasons to only hype the SEC.

Bruce feldman
  (2:50 PM)

ESPN has millions to hype everything. It's not like the SEC is the only league the network shows a lot. The SEC gets so much hype because it has won the last four BCS titles.

Chris (Miami)

Any word on Randy Shannon? I saw him earlier in the week down here and he was very polite but reserved.

Bruce feldman
  (2:52 PM)

That's him. He's a proud guy but very low-key. Maybe if Schnellenberger steps down at FAU he'd get a look there. I think he'll end up as someone's DC may be after signing day but haven't heard anything for certain. Just speculating.

Shane (Savannah)

According to a site I just saw posted on espn, It says that Green, Houston and boykin have declared for the draft. I follow the Dawgs all day, this is the first I have heard of this decision. Do you know if it is true?

Bruce feldman
  (2:53 PM)

I honestly do not.. WRapped up Media Day and then rushed back here to transcribe some tape and jump into the chat.

Nick (Albuquerque)

Who is Stanford's frontrunner if Harbaugh leaves (I think he stays, btw)?

Bruce feldman
  (2:54 PM)

Probably either Greg Roman or David Shaw, both Cardinal assistants who are well regarded.

Kendra (Columbus OH)

I know they received a 5 game suspension but I am willing to bet the house it gets reduced just in time for the Miami game. What do you think?

Bruce feldman
  (2:55 PM)

Doubt it. Might get reduced before the Mich State (Game 5) but I don't see a five game plus the bowl gift getting reduced to two games (vs. MAC teams). Then again it is the NCAA.

Jace (Oxford, OH)

Thoughts on Miami OH becoming the only D1 College Football Program to go from double digit losses to double digit wins?

Bruce feldman
  (2:56 PM)

Doubt it. Might get reduced before the Mich State (Game 5) but I don't see a five game plus the bowl gift getting reduced to two games (vs. MAC teams). Then again it is the NCAA.

Bruce feldman
  (2:56 PM)

It's a great statement for those players and coaches. Changing an attitude to become winners ain't easy.

Bruce feldman
  (2:56 PM)

Three more questions.

Kendal (Mt. Washington, Ky)

What do you think of Louisville's recruiting class?

Bruce feldman
  (3:00 PM)

Good.. Charlie Strong and Clint Hurtt are really aggressive recruiters who are picking up some nice talent. I was really impressed by Eli Rogers from what I saw in ORL. He has great hands.

Jake (Honolulu, HI)

X-Factor in National championship game, not named Cam Newton?

bruce feldman
  (3:03 PM)

Sorry.. got booted offline.. ORegon O-line vs. Nick Fairley.

ANSWER ME PLEASE!! (NOTRE DAME)

Notre dames record next season? BCS bowl? (2nd year coaches have a track record of winning... Chip Kelly, gene chizik, urban Meyer, bob stoops... Brian Kelly?)

bruce feldman
  (3:04 PM)

I think they can win 9-10, but I don't think they have the talent across the board to win a BCS title at this point. I just don't think they're good enough on the lines.

Dave (Seattle)

Come on...the real question everyone wants to know is are you picking the mighty Eastern Eagles or the Bluehens?

bruce feldman
  (3:04 PM)

I'll go with the Blue Hens and KC Keeler.

Scojo (Louisville)

Why is the media giving the cheating five a free pass? They should not have played in the Sugar Bowl and Tressell has no backbone for letting them play.

bruce feldman
  (3:05 PM)

The media didn't give them a free pass. The NCAA did. The media talked plenty about it.
