OK, everybody, let's get to as many questions as we can and hope that Jim Harbaugh doesn't interrupt us. Which he will. I promise you.
You know Shanahan fairly well. What can we expect him to focus on this offseason?
I know he's been in his basement, immersed in film. He actually called me this morning and asked, What is all this stuff going on with Jim Harbaugh. He needed to be debriefed because he hadn't heard about it. That should tell you a little bit about where Shanahan's focus and intensity is.
Any details on what the owners may be looking for in a rookie pay scale? Is it more of a bargaining thing or is this something owners need to have to get a new CBA done?
JMH, all indications are that both sides want and are willing to do a rookie pay scale -- this year. But there are lots of issues to address and resolve. Not sure how it would look just yet, JMH.
Brady for MVP? By a landslide??
By a landslide, John.
Does it surprise you that the Broncos retained GM Brian Xanders? The #1 knock on the McDaniels regime was personnel failings, not X and O mistakes, and Xanders was knee deep in those problems.
No, Vijay, Josh was making most of the personnel moves. Josh is a great football coach. But other things derailed him from that and took his focus. Brian Xanders assisted in those moves, but I don't know that he was directly responsible for them. Don't blame him. And now, Xanders will be working with Elway while the new head coach -- whoever he is -- coaches the team. It looks like it has the potential to be a more effective structure.
It seems that no candidates are really interested in the Broncos job. What would attract/detract candidates from the Broncos coaching job? How do Elway/Tebow/Denver/#2 pick and the past 2 years factor? Thank you our answer, John_Bronco
John: The Broncos job is not overly desirable. The team has not been stable. It has traded away a lot of young talent. It has an unproven front office, an unproven quarterback, lots of questions. And that right there should tell you why a job like Cleveland, where there is an established front office, and lots of money, might be more attractive right now.
Thanks for taking my question! Will Singletary accept a LB coaching position at Minnesota? That's quite a come down from HC? Does he have any value or creditability as a DC now? Maybe would be good to spend some time with Frazier to hone his communication skills? I do think he is a good coach maybe not a good HC right now. But has coaching skills. Your comments?
James: Mike Singletary and Leslie Frazier are very close, so close that if Singletary is even talking with him, I'd be stunned if he didn't take the job. Singletary will be a good addition to Frazier's staff and they will help bring out the best in each other.
I understand that the Fins courting Harbaugh was horrible image wise for the organization for the way they handled the situation with Sporano, whom I think can be a succesful coach but we need a better QB play or QB, but will this greatly impede the Fins in attracting FA's/coaches in the future?
It's a black mark on the Dolphins organization, Marcos, no doubt. If I were Jim Harbaugh, i would have been sitting there and asking, Wait, you're interviewing me while you still have a head coach? Thanks but no thanks. Other coaches will remember the way they treated Tony Sparano, no doubt. But if someone wants the job, and Miami is going to pay him, they won't let it cloud their decision.
I think if the Vikings can get someone like McDaniels to run the offense and find a QB wow! I think he brings Kyle Orton! What is your take?
James: I think Josh McDaniels will have a lot more opportunities than just the Vikings, and it's very premature about anointing him as Minnesota's offensive coordinator. Let's revisit in a couple of weeks.
What a goofy situation in Miami! How will Sparano be able to function after what just transpired? Well the assistants want to stay there and can he earn the respect of the players? What is your take on all that happened?
Joey: Dolphins ownership undermined Tony Sparano in the worst kind of way. A coach must have the respect of his players and the Dolphins did what they could to compromise it. They didn't do him any favors, and I'm sure he knows it.
After performance of Josh Freeman this year, do you see him becoming elite especially once he gels even more with all his young wrs and rb?
Love Josh Freeman, Chris. Think he's one of the top young quarterbacks in the league. Do you realize he's only 22 years old, still, and doesn't turn 23 until next week? Tampa Bay should be set for a long time with such a good young quarterback.
Hey Adam, Will the Bengals have a new OC next year?
Jason: I'd predict yes. Don't know who, but I think there will be changes on the offensive side of the football, yes.
With so many teams interviewing Perry Fewell for head coaching jobs, do the Giants have any hope of retaining him?
Don't like their chances, Ryan. Perry is in demand and it sounds like he'll land a head coaching job somewhere, be it Carolina or Denver or Cleveland. He interviewed with the Panthers for a long time yesterday and it supposedly went very well. We'll see. But it could be one and done in NY.
What makes more sense for Harbaugh: Niners or Stanford?
Rich: As a Michigan man, I'd say Michigan. But that is some tough call. There's a reason the man is struggling with it.
What kind of players can the niners get with their pick in this draft? Reach for a qb?
49ers: If there's a QB they like at No. 7, they have to take that chance. If not, time to add some defensive backs, I'd say.
Hi Adam and Happy NewYear from sunny Puerto Rico! In your opinion, does the CBA talks influenced the Andrew Luck decision on staying at Stanford? Thanks and keep the good work!
Happy new year to you, Bobby. Don't think the CBA had anything to do with Andrew Luck's decision. My understanding is that he intended to stay in school all along. He announced it before Jim Harbaugh even made his decision, so that should tell you how important it was for him to be back in school.
Is there any chance that Patrick Peterson or Prince Amukamara fall to number 13 (the Lions) in the draft this April?
Don't think either player will fall that far down, Nick. Think both are top 10 picks -- maybe even higher.
Could you see Josh McDaniels as the Chiefs OC next year, since their coordinators all coached under BB
Greg: McDaniels will have many options next season. But being the Chiefs OC is not one. That will not happen.
I always wanted to ask you this question! If you were to start a team who would be your GM, HC, QB? Which owner would you try to emulate?
Great question, James, great! Think I'd take Bill Polian as my GM, Bill Belichick as my head coach, and...Wow...Tom Brady/Peyton Manning/Aaron Rodgers as my QB. And I think we'd make former Dolphins running back Mercury Morris' life stressful.
Adam,I've tried asking you on twitter but I never got a reply. If the season DOES enter to an 18 game schedule how will the league select the extra two opponents that will be put on the schedule for each team. Right now its down to a perfect science and balance. I have been wondering that all year.
Great question, Eric, and it would be difficult to answer in 140 characters. Forgive me for not answering on Twitter. Sometimes I look at questions, sometimes not, it just depends on the time I have. My apologies for not getting to it sooner. The truth is, the two sides have not agreed to the extra games, so you're two steps ahead of the process. I'm sure there are some ideas floating around, but none that I've heard. One I'd think would be natural rivalries: Raiders-Niners, Giants-Jets, Dolphins-Bucs. Just like preseason games with shorter travel. But no one has told me anything about it, to be honest.
Your best guess..Who is head coach of the Broncos nest year?
A no-nonsense type of guy. Last time Denver liked Steve Spagnuolo, Raheem Morris and Leslie Frazier along with Josh McDaniels. So they had the right idea. I think they're going to get back to someone they know and feel comfortable with. My guess today, subject to change tomorrow, would be Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison. But Perry Fewell also would be a superb choice. Too early to tell.
I know it was week 17 against a bad team, but with Greene and LT struggling, did McKnight earn himself a few carries in round 1?
Doubt it, Dan, not unless he's needed. The Jets are going to lean on LT and Shonn Greene until they prove they can't be counted on. But it's good to know McKnight has a chance in the future.
Happy New Year! Hope this year is a great one...Now onto something that is not. Miami's OC next year. Any thoughts on candidates? How in the heck did Stephen Ross become a billionaire conducting business as he has this week?I am disgusted as a longtime fan...
Was trying to figure it out yesterday, Matt. Had people telling me that Miami wasn't going to hire Harbaugh, that it was planning to hire a new offensive coordinator. But still haven't cracked the code yet and figured out who it will be. Just know that Miami has a new OC coming. Soon enough, we'll know.
Would I be crazy to predict that the road team will win all wild card Games?
I did the same, Greg -- but my picks this season have been awful. So that probably ensures victories for all four home teams.
Now that Luck went back to Stanford, what do you think the panthers due in the incoming draft? IA.J. Green would make the most sense but Patrick Peterson is a good option too, right?
Great question, Haile. I'm not immersed in draft now like I will be in March and April (thank you, Jim Harbaugh). But the Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley is as good a guess as any. Anyway, sorry to cut it short this week. Thank you for your time and questions. Happy new years to everybody, enjoy the games this weekend, and don't forget we have pregame shows on ESPN on Saturday and Sunday at 11 am EST. Please tune in. Until next Friday...Adam
