Chat with Todd Archer

Jason Garrett (Dallas)

How much time do I have as Head coach to turn things around before I get exposed as the latest puppet for Jerry?

Todd Archer
  (3:07 PM)

Since you were named the coach Thursday it's fitting you get to start the chat off today. History says you have about four years to do so. The previous coaches under Jones have had on average 57.3 regular season games. Not sure why, but I would take the over on this one.

KD Denton Tx [via mobile]

Hey Archer, do you think Jerry can actually hold true to his words and REALLY allow Coach Garrett to control all roster moves and other important decisions with little to NO interference? or wishful thinking and its the same old Jerry?

Todd Archer
  (3:08 PM)

As I said in a blog post today I'm skeptical on this final say stuff. And Garrett said he didn't want final say. But I will say that whoever the head coach of the Cowboys is has tremendous sway with Jerry Jones. If he wants something, Jerry will do it. I don't believe Wade Phillips exercised enough control in his time, letting Jerry do what he wanted. I don't think Garrett will let that happen.

Drew (Dallas)

Who are some potential candidate for defensive coordinator? Obviously, Bowles and Grantham, but are there any others that aren't being mentioned that would be a good fit?

Todd Archer
  (3:10 PM)

Hard to really know right now because there are a lot of unknowns across the league. I would say Bowles is a candidate. Grantham could be in the mix, too. One name to keep an eye on is Atlanta secondary coach Tim Lewis. Garrett was in New York when Lewis was the Giants coordinator. He has 3-4 experience. No requests to talk to him have been made but he could be a fit.

eric (dubuque, ia)

who's the front runner for defensive coordinator positon? is mike singletary in the running? what about john fox?

Todd Archer
  (3:12 PM)

Singletary is interviewing to be the LB coach in Minnesota. He's never been a coordinator before, so I would scratch him off the list. Fox is intriguing. Even though he's a 4-3 guy, I wouldn't dismiss him or anybody like that.

Kevin (Forth Worth, TX)

How was Bryan McCann in coverage this year? Did he show enough for the team to think he could eventually start or is he more of a special teamer and 4th CB?

Todd Archer
  (3:13 PM)

I think he is what he is. I think he's a backup corner and special teamer. He has the right mentality at cornerback and has the speed but I don't know if he develops into a starter. I like him as a kick returner more than punts.

Aaron (FL)

Hey Todd, With Felix Jones the only solid RB to stay. How do you feel about Dallas taking a look at Mark Ingram? maybe we could draft back into the 1st to get him. Your thoughts?

Todd Archer
  (3:14 PM)

So you're out on Tashard Choice? Choice will be the No. 2 back in 2011. I don't see them drafting a running back early. They have too many other needs to take a runner, especially in the first round.

will (Austin)

what do you think about Tom Cable for the Dallas Cowboy offensive coordinator position? he would be able to help stabilize the cowboys offensive line and he also brings a tough mentality that the whole offense could use.

Todd Archer
  (3:17 PM)

I don't think Garrett will have a coordinator or one in name only. He will call the shots on offense. I wouldn't think Cable would be on his list because there's no past history there. One name as a possibility - Paul Chryst, Wisconsin's coordinator. He and Garrett go back to the USFL together.

Steven (Big D)

Safety and O Line seems to be the two biggest needs on this team. Replacing 2 Safeties or 2 O Linemen. Which improves the team faster?

Todd Archer
  (3:19 PM)

I would go with the line first, honestly. The safety play has to improve but I'm more of the belief that you can cover up some shortcomings in the secondary with great pressure, not the other way around. But the really good teams have really good lines. I can see two new starters up front for the Cowboys next season.

James (Dallas)

Wade DC at Houston. I think he'll do a good job! Comments?

Todd Archer
  (3:21 PM)

There's a lot of work to do there and not a lot of time to do it. Phillips has a history of turning around defenses. The Texans secondary is awful but switching to the 3-4 will force some of their best players - Mario Williams, Antonio Smith - to do things they haven't done before. And with a lockout, Phillips could have a shorter window to install all of his system. That's not a good way to start.

Sam (PA)

When is the first day that the Cowboys can start making some roster moves? And what do you expect to be among the first changes to this roster?

Todd Archer
  (3:23 PM)

They can't cut a player until Feb. 7. Rosters are frozen. I think you could see Marion Barber be the first to go.

Bryan (Fort Worth, TX)

Too early to ask for your Superbowl prediction at Jerry World?

Todd Archer
  (3:24 PM)

I think I said Indy and Green Bay at the beginning of the year. While my choices are still alive, I'm changing to New England-Green Bay.

Jim (Smyrna, Tn)

When will Garrett start making coaching moves

Todd Archer
  (3:25 PM)

He said he is in no rush. I think he might want to see what happens with some other coaching stafs first. It would be ideal to have it done by the Senior Bowl, which has turned into a job fair and can distract teams from looking at players.

James (Dallas)

Snafoo By Ross of the Fins? Could backlash?

Todd Archer
  (3:26 PM)

Ross didn't help himself for sure. I can't see how what happened helps Tony Sparano next year. It's too bad. He's a good coach but the rookie owner did him in.

Greg (Westchester, NY)

Who will the Cowboys hire as DC and will they stick w/ the 3-4?

Todd Archer
  (3:28 PM)

Lots of DC questions, so I'll take the chance here to give you my best guess - stressing the guess ... I think Todd Grantham will be in the mix I don't see a Rob Ryan coming to town or an Eric Mangini. By the way, when is it OK for Mangini to lose the Mangenius nickname? I think Todd Bowles will be in the mix. And I mentioned Tim Lewis earlier. And, yes, they'll stick with the 3-4.

Mike (Dallas)

Who does Dallas take in the draft this year? What position? DB, OL, DL

Todd Archer
  (3:29 PM)

Thankfully you just want positions. In order, I'm going offensive line, secondary, defensive line.

Anthony (Toronto)

I applaude Andrew Luck's decision to stay in school... The world needs better designed buildings. What is the ramification of his decision with regards to the Cowboys' draft plans?

Todd Archer
  (3:29 PM)

Not sure it really affects it other than Carolina won't take Luck with the top pick, so that opens it up to another position.

Bryan (Fort Worth, TX)

Will these players be wearing 'The Star' in 2011? Roy Williams, Mike Jenkins, Marion Barber, Keith Brooking, David Beauler (sp?), Leonard Davis?

Todd Archer
  (3:30 PM)

Williams - yes; Jenkins - yes; Barber - no; Brooking - maybe; Buehler - yes; Davis - no. I think they could keep two kickers.

Mike (Dallas)

Ok Todd, That does it you are not starting this week! You are late! Jimmy Jones would have had your hide! Tom Landry still greatest Dallas Coach?

Todd Archer
  (3:30 PM)

I need new clocks at the house.

jeff (ponder, tx)

i read that the texans are interested in reggie herring. do they have to let the texans interview him?

Todd Archer
  (3:31 PM)

No, they do not have to let him interview. The only position a team must let a coach interview for is the head coach spot. There is no such provision regarding promotions. Permission had not been granted as of yet, to my knowledge, but if they do, then Herring will not be back with the Cowboys.

joe (Texas)

Jerry and Jason said yesterday that sweeping changes are coming soon...What are you hearing they will be...well besides barber and williams gone???

Todd Archer
  (3:33 PM)

You must've heard something different than me. All they said was there would be changes. Not sweeping changes. Jerry said more would be made than last year, Since they made two in 2010, then he would be right if there were three. I do believe there will be changes and with some big names but I'm not sure it would be viewed as "sweeping."

Tom (Dallas)

Brady MVP?? By a landslide?

Todd Archer
  (3:33 PM)

Landslide.

Danny (Jacksonville, fl)

Who do you think will be the starting QB for Coach Garrett? As a die hard Cowboys fan i enjoyed watching Kitna's play more than Romo. I personally believe we should trade romo for a running back.

Todd Archer
  (3:34 PM)

Sorry, Danny, it's Romo. And they don't need a running back. You don't need the stud running back to be successful in the NFL.

joe (Texas)

Why are the Dolphins, 49ers and Broncos not in trouble with the league for offering Harbaugh money and contracts before using the rooney rule and the Cowboys were questioned as soon as the season was over

Todd Archer
  (3:36 PM)

Miami would've been in trouble. San Fran fulfilled the Rooney Rule obligation. Broncos have not talked to Harbaugh. Cowboys were never questioned by the league about it.

Padge (Dallas)

Do you think Jeff Fisher would of been a coach Jones would of considered had he been released prior to Garrett being hired?

Todd Archer
  (3:37 PM)

I hope not. Fisher is a tad overrated. He has two winning records since 2003.

Todd(PA) [via mobile]

Todd i'm probaly in fantasy land here but why not sign Logan Mankins. Yes I know he's still playing n the whole CBA issue but lets say it bcomes possible..forget money n that Jerry doesn't want to sign high priced free agent Olinemen anymore but the Pats got noticably better when he returned and hes a upgrade to say the least over Leonard Davis. He's a sure thing n under 30. Thoughts?

Todd Archer
  (3:38 PM)

I don't see New England letting him leave, so that would be the first reason. If he is available, I would try to get him. Absolutely. It's just that I don't believe the Cowboys will have a shot at him.

Jim (Smyrna, Tn)

Will the Boys be able to keep Kitna?

Todd Archer
  (3:38 PM)

He's under contract through next year. He's not going anywhere unless the Cowboys want him to.

John (Houston)

Who are some free agents that could come in and help this team at a reasonable price?

Todd Archer
  (3:40 PM)

Since we don't know the system that will be in place for free agency it is hard to say who will be available. It's all a guess. If you want some positions, I'd look for a veteran safety, preferrably free safety. I mentioned Mankins earlier. He would be the first choice on the line.

Will (Dallas)

Almost all mock drafts have the cowboys taking either a CB or DE I don't see this happening do you?

Todd Archer
  (3:41 PM)

Who would you rather see? Of those two spots, I would say defensive end before cornerback, personally.

Tony (Bryan, TX)

I understand the Davis's line play has not been tops lately, but with all of our line issues, is cutting him smart?

Todd Archer
  (3:42 PM)

He's part of the line issues, no? I wouldn't expect to see an entire new crew in there in 2011. Free will be the left tackle. Gurode will be the center. I've advocated the return of Kosier to a smart-money deal to be a stop-gap guy for the future. The biggest questions are Davis and Colombo. With the cap coming back you have to take money into the equation.

joe (Texas)

Do you think Jason Garrett will be a successful Head Coach or are we in store for more mediocrity that Jerry has given us since Jimmy and his football mind left Dallas???

Todd Archer
  (3:45 PM)

I think Garrett has all the tools necessary to be a successful coach. He's smart. He knows how to reach players. He knows you can't make everybody happy. He's learned rom guys like Jimmy Johnson. He's also learned what not to do, I'm sure, in some cases. Now, is he perfect? No, but neither is a Cowher, Gruden, Harbaugh or anybody else. I'm in the minority when I say this, but I don't think the Cowboys are miles and miles away from being a playoff contender.

Tom (Minnesota)

What do you think about the Frazier hire in Minnesota?

Todd Archer
  (3:45 PM)

I like it. He handled a tough situation, like Garrett, and did well. And he's probably the defensive equivalent of Garrett in terms of smarts.

Padge (Dallas)

Back to the Fisher question...How many seasons did he have a winning record prior to 2003 and how many playoff games has he won compared to the Cowboys coaches since their last super bowl win? Point made.

Todd Archer
  (3:49 PM)

Prior to 2003 he had three winning records. That means he has five winning records in 17 seasons. Had a great run to the Super Bowl, aided by the Music City Miracle. Good coach. Not a great coach.

Craig (Lindsay, ON)

I understand that Beuhler missed some key kicks. But keep in mind he was basically a kicker who didn't kick FG's a year ago. And his percentage was still over the league average and with some serious leg strength. Keep him, he will not only improve but will be an All-Pro with some more focus which can be learned.

Todd Archer
  (3:50 PM)

That's what the Cowboys are hoping happens. I'm not sure. He's got the leg strength but he you have to be automatic from 30-49 yards and he was way too inconsistent. Now, the Cowboys won't just throw him away after living through his learning experience in 2010.

joe (Texas)

Just read where Wade was denied access to interview Herring and Maxie....I am glad are you...keeps some continuity on defense???

Todd Archer
  (3:53 PM)

Or it protects the Cowboys for now until they find somebody they want more. With the way this defense played in 2010 I don't know that you'd want a ton of continuity.

Connor (New Jersey)

Will Romo completely bounce back from injury next year?

Todd Archer
  (3:54 PM)

He's close to 100 percent now. He'll be good to go whenever 2011 begins.

Mike (Dallas)

I think the reason Beuhler struggles is because he gets so hyped. On kick offs he does a little dance before he kicks. That needs to be coached out of him. All kicks need to be the same, kickoffs and fg kicks. The same motion on every kick. YOUR THOUGHTS???

Todd Archer
  (3:56 PM)

Actually he changed up his kickoff routine to get more amped up at the end of the year and it helped him record a ton of touchbacks. But as a field goal kicker he was as raw, say, as a wide receiver moving to defensive back. He never made a pressure kick before this year. He played a lot of positions and never solely focused on kicking. I'd give it time with him but have much more of a backup plan than they had in 2010. Kris Brown is certainly that.

aaron (Florida)

why is joe from texas getting all his questions answered

Todd Archer
  (3:56 PM)

Sorry.

jeff (ponder, tx)

do u think barber will be released or traded? or do uthink he should be kept

Todd Archer
  (3:57 PM)

Released. Why would somebody trade for him and his contract? And, no, I don't think he'll play for the Cowboys again.

James (Montana)

Best Dallas QB ever??

Todd Archer
  (3:58 PM)

I might have to go with Staubach even if Aikman has more Super Bowl wins. Am I stupid?

Marco (Minn)

Why didnt Dallas trade Marion Barber a year or two ago? They need to learn from the Patriots. They get rid of guys sometimes instead of just letting guys walk.

Todd Archer
  (3:59 PM)

Always better to get rid of a player a year too soon than a year too late. New England does not marry itself to players and makes it easy to cut the cord. Smart way to do business.

Gary (Los Feliz)

with the 9th pick in the upcoming draft, who would YOU like to see get picked?

Todd Archer
  (4:00 PM)

Tell me the first eight picks. I can't give you names right now. It's all a guess and speculation and the rankings of players right now will change greatly between now and April.

Jerry Jones (Arlington, TX)

Would you like to come over to my house to watch the playoffs?

Todd Archer
  (4:00 PM)

I thought you lived in Highland Park? Who knew?

Chuck (Houston)

I'd like to know what players you think Wade will steal to Houston.

Todd Archer
  (4:01 PM)

Maybe he'd make a run at Spears. The Texans need to find some 3-4 linemen. Spears will be available. Hatcher maybe too. I don't think the Cowboys will let him get Bowen.

John (Dallas)

Where does VY end up?

Todd Archer
  (4:02 PM)

Not with Dallas. When in doubt, always give Oakland a shot.

Todd Archer
  (4:03 PM)

Thanks for all of the questions. If you have more, send me question to the mailbag and remember to check out the blog for regular updates.See you next time.Courage.
