Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:54 AM)

I can't wait any longer. Let's get this rolling!!! Playoffs Baby!

RAYGORDONREID ( PRINCETON NJ 08544)

TO MATTY DUBB WILLIAMSON AT 12.20 PM HI MATTY DUBB EAGLES OR PACKERS

Matt Williamson
  (11:56 AM)

Real tough one. Curious how healthy Vick/Jackson/etc are, but they did have a week off, which I think could really pay off. Meanwhile, GB has played a pretty grueling stretch. Have to think overall that Philly is the more rested team-and they are at home. But I am taking GBay. I think this D is built perfectly to do exactly what Vick doesn't want them to do. Be physical with Philly's smaller WRs and bring serious pressure, often with Woodson-who, like A Winfield, is close to Vick's athletic equal. But the thing I like most for the Pack is Rodgers and their WRs vs. Philly's suspect secondary.

Marc T. (Akron, OH)

Thanks Matt for always having a great chat. As an undergrad at U of Akron, I am suffering. 1-11?!! What do we have to do to get some wins around here?

Matt Williamson
  (11:57 AM)

So, you are a Zip? Nice. Only spent about 6 months at Akron, but did enjoy it very much. But-now-I have lost touch with the football team. Sorry bro-no insight there! Stay warm.

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Matt - the Jets looked like they were exploited on 3rd and long situations all season - what adjustments can they make to get their defense off the field against Indy?

Matt Williamson
  (11:58 AM)

It is going to be real tough. They are very light/weak at safety now and they don't have much of a pass rush-contrary to popular thought. Rex needs to really dial up pressure to get to QBs...and Manning eats that stuff up. Revis can only cover one guy. If you haven't figured it out, I am taking Indy in this one.

Ryan (DC)

Who poses the biggest threat to the Patriots in the Divisional Round, Chiefs, Ravens, or Jets?

Matt Williamson
  (11:59 AM)

The only thing about KC that would worry me is Weiss and Crennel. But overall, I don't see KC or the Jets as threats at all. Balt did walk into the Pats' stadium and smack them around last year, so that is a worry. And you know Balt won't be overwhelmed by the situation. Still, they don't worry me a ton either.

Nathan (England)

Hi Matt, love your work particularly football today with Podvader. Don't let him get too powerful.I was wondering how you saw the Chargers offseason going with all the free agents they have? Do you see them replacing most of those guys or resigning them? We could lose Naanee, Weddle, Floyd, Sproles, VJax, Cooper etc. Where do you see us going in the draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

I will keep Jay in line-trust me. CRUCIAL off season for SD. First off, remember, they have an extra draft pick or two from what I recall-and they also will be picking earlier than they are accustomed. That could be very beneficial. Still, I would still VERY much be in win-now mode if I was in charge of SD. That would start with V-Jax. Even if it meant Franchising him. Can't let that guy walk. And, if he is smart, he will realize that SD is the best fit for him too with Rivers' deep ball abilities. Weddle would be the other guy I would really want to keep. Floyd third.

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

FYI-it is the playoffs, so no screwing around on the iPod. Just went with a purely Zeppelin shuffle. Leading off with In The Evening. Gettyup!

Tim (California)

Matt, what do you think the Vikes should do at QB? Think they have a shot at Kolb or should they move up in the draft maybe, or how about even trying to get Leinhart maybe for a low draft choice?

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Not Leinhart. Kolb would be very enticing to me. Somewhat like Minny, I think I would play to win now for the Vikes...but that one is a tougher decision due to team age and all the holes they have. There isn't a great solution to the Vikes' QB issues if they don't land Kolb for the now. But where they pick, there should be a guy like Mallet I would think to build around.

chuck (clarksville tn)

can the titans trade their no 8 pick and Vince Young to Philly for Kevin Kolb

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

Not sure what VY's contract is like, but that aside, I would do that if I were the Eagles. VY would be a dynamite backup for Vick. And they need a legit backup considering all the hits Vick takes.

Jordan (Casper, WY)

How much are the Bengals praying that Rahim Moore is still on the board at 36?

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

A little early to speculate on such thing Jordan!

Mike (Boca Raton)

Colts getting healthy at the right time?

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

I very much think so, but I also don't think they are the team they have been the last few years. I like them to win this week though rather convincingly.

Mike (Boca Raton)

How does Marvin Lewis keep his job going 4-12 this season? Or were the Bengals just giving Pittsburgh and Baltimore belated Christmas presents?

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

Lewis was named Coach of the Year just one year ago! Not sure there are a ton of great HCs lining up for that Bengals job either.

Jay Cutler (Lake Forest, IL)

I've dropped my INTS down from 26 to 16 and i've moved my qb rating up 10 points, how come i still get no respect

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

Jay, you get respect from me. Can't say I entirly trust you not to throw a crucial INT in the playoffs, but I also just wrote in my Scouts Buzz that Chicago clearly won the trade with Denver and that they no way would be on a bye this week with K Orton behind center all season.

Mike (Boca Raton)

anybody else having trouble with the chat disappearing?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

All is well on my end. But there are VERY few questions so far. Hopefully there is not a problem. In the mood for some serious action today.

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

"That's the Way" now...tremendous

BJ (Indiana)

Who's the best RB likely to be in the draft, and will he be available when the Packers are on the clock?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

I would guess Ingram, but I am not all over the draft yet. However, I do think there will be quality RBs at the end of the 1st round-or at the end of the 2nd. And that would make a lot of sense for the Pack. But Grant is coming back and Starks hasnt' looked bad at all. I see OLB as their #1 need though. A young CB makes sense too. Another OT?

Mike (Dolphins Fan)

Hey Matt - if you're the Dolphins coach (whoever that might be), what do you do with the OL next year? Carey to G, Incognito to C, draft a RT and fill in the gaps with what's left on the roster?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

Honestly, I probably do nothing. I know that prob makes you insane to read, but before this season started I predicted that Miami would have the #1 OL in all of football. Of course that did not hold true! But I think injuries had a lot to do with it. I also think that Carey and Long are as good of a set of bookend OTs as you will find. Adding one more OC/OG in say the 3rd round would not be a terrible idea...but I would be more worried about QB and RB.

Marc (Malden, MA)

You're Mike Shanahan. Do you (a) draft a QB (b) trade for Kolb (c) get a QB next year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Can't imagine him making another deal with the Eagles for a QB! No way would I do C. A seems most logical, but Wash is an old team. A HUGE mess of a rebuilding of a project.

Mike (Boca Raton)

You think that besides Brady and friends that the Packers are the team that nobody wants to play in the playoffs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

I picked GBay, but I tend to think the winner of the Pack/Eagles game is that team in which you describe.

Shawn (Bronxville, NY)

Ma$$. Big G-Men fan here but disgusted with the obvious collapse. It's odd to me that this team is soo undisciplined when they have a coach that is supposed to be the disciplinary? Also, bonus question! Any chance that Jacobs is gone after the year? I am not a fan.

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

I think they very much should be rid of Jacobs. His play isn't strong enough to put up with the headaches. The discipline question is tougher. Turnovers. Questionable special teams play. I give Coughlin another year to correct such things. But his seat would be very warm.

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

Now "Going to California"...wonder how tomorrow could ever follow today

Xander (Philly)

Zeppelin, as in the most overrated band of all time? Yep, I said it.

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

You are out. Out. No Soup For You. You hurt my soul with that one.

Mike (Boca Raton)

Which team shows up this weekend: the Cheifs or the Chefs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Expecting a tight one there. Am picking Balt, but I think KC will be tough to beat at home. Should be a very good game.

BJ (Indiana)

Do the Packers need to sack Vick multiple times on Sunday to be successful, or will just getting in his face and rushing his reads be enough?

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Sacks would be great, but rushing him and hitting him would probably be enough. Force the action.

Sam (Chicago, IL)

Hey Matt, why doesn't anybody talk about the bears winning the NFC, they've all ready beaten the packers and the eagles and i think they could have beaten the packers last week with some more motivation

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

I don't believe Chicago was lacking in motivation last week. I don't think Chi is big time contender, but I don't discredit them either. Will be a tough place to play and their special teams are the best in the playoffs. I also think their D is Top 3. Not an easy game for anyone.

Drew Brees (New Orleans)

Gotta tell you Matt, I sure as heck don't wanna take my Saints into Soldier Field. Do you think we match up better with the falcons or bears

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

Exactly. I actually think Sea struggles more this upcoming week than many tend to think. And going to Soldier is not a good fit at all. Not expecting a long playoff run from NO.

Tim (Saginaw, MI)

Would it take an act of God for Seattle to beat NO?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

Pretty much, but NO is quite banged up, working on a short week and have an extremely long/tough road trip to deal with. Brutal place to play and all that too. Hass playing also would help Seattle, as he is much quicker getting the ball out and handling the blitz. But...I am taking New Orls.

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

"Living Loving Maid"

Lou (Philly)

What changes on D helps the Giants back seven................Navy can pass on the back 7.

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

It has surprised me how much they went downhill. I don't think the LBs have very good range in coverage and overall, that back 7 needs to add speed.

Clay matthews (green bay)

hey matt am i dpoy? and do you like eric walden beside me he blew up last week or can you see von miller

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

From what I understand V Miller will be gone when GBay picks. Walden had a great game-I have my eye on him. There really isn't a great option for DPOY. Matthews' production really cooled down over the last 6 games or so. D Ware? Ngata? I can't stand behind anyone this year.

Shawn (Bronxville, NY)

Is VICK really that much better or does he just have better support and getting by with some luck?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

Really that much better than when he was in ATL? Yes. MUCH better passer and reader of defenses. Still makes way too many questionable decisions though.

Squall (Balamb Garden)

Zep may not be the best, but it's impossible to get more overrated than the Beatles, am I right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

Zeppelin is #1 on my list..but the Beatles are not too far behind. Tread lightly Squall.

Michael (London)

I know that people rip Sea because of their division. I actually think it detracts from a good rebuilding job done by P Carroll/Schneider. Rome not built in a day and all that. QB remains a huge off season priority though?

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

They have made some strides, but remember, if they lost Sunday night, they would have picked 8th overall in the draft. Which is what kind of team they really are. CB is a huge need. Could use another safety and pass rusher. OL is a mess. Another WR would be nice for sure. And yes, QB.

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

"What Is and What Should Never Be"

Me (Michigan)

Lions on a 4 game winning streak, do they continue it next season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Improving. Played real well for most of the season. Very interested in seeing what they do this off season, but this staff has been great in both their off seasons. Attack that back 7.

Nick (Topeka)

Any chance Suh does not win Defensive Rookie of the Year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

It is a lock. McCourty would be next on my list then Haden. But it has to go to Suh.

Chris (Ann Arbor, MI)

What's your take on the Steelers at this point? How much will their OL hold them back in the playoffs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

OL has come around of late. Not great, but better for sure. I think PGH is very strong right now. Actually, I think they are the 2nd best team in football. But they are in trouble going to NEng.

Matt (NC)

Your thoughts on Tebow?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

Better than I expected thus far. But Denver has REALLY kept it simple for him. Just about every pass he throws is off of play action. Easy reads. Still very skeptical.

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Stairway-Live off Song Remains the Same. This is a song of hope.

Me (Michigan)

In your opinion, who wins the NFL MVP?

Matt Williamson
  (12:32 PM)

Brady by a landslide. Rodgers would be my 2nd vote followed by Vick. Vick will come in 2nd though.

Darryl (Baltimore)

What are the Washington Redskins going to do with one Albert Haynesworth? In my opinion, his actions this past season were dispicable and he doesn't deserve to wear any NFL uniform!

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

I would imagine that he is gone. But I would move to a 4-3 and build the D around him. Seriously.

Luke (Waterdown, Ontario)

M Dub, I'm a 90's guy. Get into some Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Nothing sounds sweeter than Cobain's Man Who Sold the World

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

I am all over that. No worries. Old soul here, but was in college when all that was huge.

wayne (carolina) [via mobile]

Will rob ryan get a chance to coach in the nfl, Panthers could certainly use a defensive minded coach.

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

I don't understand why Carolina seems to be going D with their next HC hire. Has anyone watched that passing game? Will have a very young QB. They need a QB guru. A N Turner type. The D will be much better when they get their LBs back and are not on the field SO much. Still, a DT would be a very nice addition.

John (Bay View)

Walking side by side with Death, the devil mocks their every step. How can you not love Zep?!?!?!

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

Does anyone remember laughter?

Mike (Boca Raton)

Difference maker in the Bal/K.C. game?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

Rice. KC's run D has really fallen off of late. Still a huge believer in Rice.

Ryan (Germantown, MD)

What do the Giants need to do in the off season to get that elusive 11th win?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

Back 7 speed/upgrades would be #1 for me-and that would prob help the special teams too. Just really need to cut down on the turnovers.

Scott (SD)

Did San Fran call you and ask you to interview for the GM job? If not, MAJOR FAIL on their part, my friend.

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Didn't get that call.

Matt (NC)

Horseradish is awesome. If you seperate the word, you have horse and radish, but I don't like radish. What about a horse makes radish horseradish? Weird.

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

No question. Bloody Mary-extra horseradish

ray (philly)

matt i can see raji and matthews woodson blowing up the eagles line agree?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

Agreed

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

But...Peters is a much better LT than given credit for, which should allow Philly to double Matthews on the other side. Raji is an animal.

Tim (Saginaw, MI)

With the possible exception of Carolina, the NFC South should be fearsome next year.

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

No question. 3 real strong QBs-should keep them quite competitive.

Ozzy (The 70s)

Make sure to get some Black Sabbath into the mix.

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

Sweet Leaf

Darryl (Baltimore)

Should Ed Reed win defensive POY despite starting this season on the PUP list? He did still lead the NFL with 8 picks.

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

Amazing indeed, but just missed too much time. Same with Troy P. Huge impact players, but not enough time on the field.

Mike (Boca Raton)

game most likely to be a one-sided affair this weekend?

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

Indy over Jets. Peyton Manning over Mark Sanchez.

Nathan (Coralville, IA)

What bad team from this season can be turned around the quickest? My first impulse would be to say the Vikings, but I'm not so sure--got to replace the Williams wall at some point...

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

And that OL is awful in Minny. And no 3rd round pick. And S Rice is a free agent. And their QB stinks. And the secondary isn't very good.

Nathan (Coralville, IA)

Best Zeppelin album? Physical Graffiti, right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

No question

Mike (Danbury, CT)

What would you change to make the pro bowl a little less of just a popularity contest? As a Giants fan Shaun Ohara has had many Pro Bowl years, but this was absolutely NOT one of them...

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Well said. Pro Bowl has always been flawed. SO many mistakes year after year, but most of them occur on the OL. Once you are in, it is tough to get you off the roster. And finally...To Be a Rock and Not to Roll...

Blake (Abilene, TX)

Matt will you evaluate the three rookie QB's how they did and what their future is. Bradford, McCoy and Tebow?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

Bradford is a future Pro Bowler, Just commented on Tebow. Not overly excited about him but want to see more. McCoy was impressive early, but when the weather got tough and Hillis wasn't really there to lean on, McCoy crumbled.

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

In My Time of Dying

Kevin (Wisconsin)

Why were there so many firings this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

Could/Should have been more...like Houston/Miami/Jax. Less firings could mean lock out. Hope not!

Ryan (Germantown, MD)

You really think SEA-NO will be a better game then IND-NYJ?

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Maybe I said some of that for effect, but I do think SEA/Saints will be closer than many tend to think.

Darryl (Baltimore)

Well Matt, if Reed isn't defensive POY, and Polamalu isn't either in your opinion, who wins it?

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

I have no idea. No one is deserving. Seriously.

Luke (Waterdown, Ontario)

If you're starting an expansion team, picking Rogers or Rothlisberger. Has to be Rodgers for me. Ben without that D isn't great IMO

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Ben is great no matter what. His style actually doesn't complement the D all that well. Ben is a huge risk taker/gun slinger. And a total stud QB who can put the whole team on his shoulders-and does it when it matters most. Those two rings were not an accident. But, your question is a little differnt. Because I am assuming Rodgers is at least 3 years younger and I do think his style of play lends itself to a much longer career than Roethlisberger's.

Chad Henne (Miami)

Still a believer? Is Josh Freeman the best of the young QB's not named Matt Ryan?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Not still a believer in Henne. And yes to Freeman. Bradford is in that conversation too. Freeman is fantastic.

Anthony (NYC)

M-Dub against Peyton other than Revis & Cromartie, who else on the Jets secondary could be counted on to make a play? With Leonhard being hurt their play as a unit has been shaky.

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

That is extremely true. And frankly, while Cro makes a lot of plays, he also gives up a ton. Bet Manning can really manipulate him with pump fakes and his body language in the pocket. Just throw at someone other than Revis.

Al (Bloomington, Il)

A lot of talk up north about trading Adrian Peterson for a "Franchise" quarterback. Who is the best QB the Vikings could get for AP? Sanchez? Eli Manning?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Neither. RBs are dime a dozen. Franchise QBs are not. If you were to do a move like that, it would have to be for draft picks. Then you select Newton/Mallet/whomever and totally start from scratch.

Eric (San Jose)

Did you check out Mallet last night? The guy throws a pretty pass but when hit with any sort of pressure he just loses it.

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

Can't move or get out of the way. Big tall guy with a rocket. But no feet or agility. Really needs to go to the right system with the right OL. But-I still need to do more work on the guy. He can sure sling it.

carl (dc)

hey matt huge redskin fan do you think we can trade for that guy who almost beat the pats forgot his name what would gb ask for him

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Flynn. I do see Flynn being on the market like Schaub was in ATL when he was behind Vick. That early 2nd rounder might get it done.

Mike (Boca Raton)

What are the broncos doing hiring Elway? These vanity hirings never work out. Have fun being the bungles of the west, denver.

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Seems odd to me too. How many scouting trips has Elway been on? Honestly, he is my all time favorite QB, but does that mean he can scout Defensive Linemen? Don't understand such moves either.

Jeff (Auburn)

Anyone criticizing Zep -- were you around when they hit the scene in '69? The first two chords of Good times Bad Times are the greatest in rock history -- they put a merciful end to the bubblegum era...

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

No response needed

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

How far off do you think Suh is from DPOY, not just rookie DPOY?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Wasn't good enough vs. the run for DPOY. Could be in his future though for sure.

Ryan (Germantown, MD)

Are you on twitter Matt?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

I am not. Many tell me that I should be. Just seems so self-serving to me. Tweet: I am ordering a pizza. Yada Yada. Could use some help on this subject I suppose.

Travis (AZ)

Do you see Mcnabb with another team next year and if so who?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

With another team for sure. Zona? SF? I am not a McNabb guy, but the Niners win the West this year with him behind center. Minny?

Jim (NYC)

Peyton Manning over Mark Sanchez. Really?!?! Are they arm wrestling? That's your analysis? YIKES.

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Hey Jimbo, read the entire chat and while you are at it, read the 1000 words I whipped up previewing that game. We can talk about the Jets' RG vs. the Colts' backup DTs if you are really in the mood.

Mike (Boca Raton)

Do you think Michael Oher's injury will be an issue against K.C. (and Hali)?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

I think Hali is an utter super star and will be an issue no matter what.

Curt (NJ)

Where do you think Deangelo Williams lands in Free Agency? The Panthers seem like they're ready to move on to Jonathan Stewart

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

As they should be, but if they pull a J Peppers and just let the guy walk for free-it will be a huge mistake. Franchise and trade the guy!

Bob Hebblethwaite (Ontatio)

How would you rank the special team units from top to bottom of the palyoff teams?

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Funny you mentioned that. It will prob being going up on the .com today, but I ranked every position group (including ST) from 1 to 12.

Pat (Hoboken)

Ohhh you got served Jim (NYC)!

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Yeah Jimbo, I really have no idea about anything else in that playoff game except that Manning is better (much better actually) than Sanchez.

Jim (NYC)

Been reading the chat. All year. Which is why I'm aware of your Jets and Pitt biases. Which is fine, b/c im bias for the Jets. Difference is I admit it.

Matt Williamson
  (1:01 PM)

Jets have a very strong orgnnization, coaching staff and roster. But not QB. Need a QB in this league. That is why I "Hate On" the Jets. Not personnel Jimbo. Strictly business.

Matt Williamson
  (1:01 PM)

Okay, on that note, I am out. Great chat. We will do it again next week.
