Chat with Andy Katz

Andy Katz
  (1:59 PM)

Here to take some questions.

James (The Wild West)

Andy, BYU and SDSU are ranked 3rd and 12th respectively in ESPN's InsiderRPI. Yet, they are ranked 14th and 6th respectively in the ESPN/USA Today Poll. What are the people seeing that the computers are not?

Andy Katz
  (1:59 PM)

I wouldn't read too much into coaches' poll. The computers are based on the opponents and home/road.

John (West Lafayette)

As a Purdue fan, usually we are upset with the media. However, I feel like you are giving us too much credit, wait until we have quality wins to say that we were underrated.

Andy Katz
  (2:01 PM)

Wow. I get crushed when I overreacted to Hummel's injury and now I've overreacted to the team's recent success. Funny. I think I'll stick with my most recent prediction that they'll compete for the Big Ten title.

Jake (Chicago)

News that doctors feel strongly that surgery is not needed on Irving's toe is a step in the right direction correct? While still not 100%, Wednesday's update was good news or no news?

Andy Katz
  (2:05 PM)

Yes it's good news. But I would caution and say that the Duke staff continues to say there is no set timetable on when the toe will be better. But no surgery is great for Irving's chances of playing this season.

John (Norfolk)

Andy, Please pass this along to your colleagues: Enough of the undefeated Duke talk! True, they have two legit All Americans, one of whom is worthy of the mid-season NPOY. That said, this is still a relatively young team with an inconsistent frontcourt and a suddenly short seven man rotation. Not to mention no Kyrie Irving for at least the immediate future. Undefeated??? With Kyrie, let's talk. Without, no chance...even in a down ACC. Thoughts?

Andy Katz
  (2:06 PM)

Duke won't go undefeated. You're not hearing that talk here.

mcmyers1 (Owensboro, Ky.)

What is the likelyhood that Enes Kanter will be cleared to play in 2011?

Andy Katz
  (2:08 PM)

We should know either later Friday or Monday. The committee met Thursday by conference call on the matter to hear his reinstatement plea.

Reed (Nashville)

How about just one little shout out to Rick Byrd and his 500th win?

Andy Katz
  (2:09 PM)

Here it is!!! Great job Rick!

Jonathan (Worthington, OH)

I feel that Ohio State is very much vulnerable to a team with two major big men who can neutralize Sullinger. Would you agree with this and what other weakness do you see with the Buckeyes?

Andy Katz
  (2:13 PM)

I disagree. DeShaun Thomas and Dallas Lauderdale offer up plenty of beef as well. Ohio State just has to make perimeter shots. If the Buckeyes are off then they could be vulnerable.

Paul C. (Maryland)

Big Terp fan here and we play Villanova next weekend... Was able to catch a few of their recent games on the tube and can't understand why this team is not talked about in the media... It seems they finally have legitimate size and skill in their frontcourt to go with their elite backcourt.... Am I being paranoid? I've seen all the top teams play this year and Nova seems just as stacked at each position as all of them. Do my Terps stand a chance? What do we have to do to win?

Andy Katz
  (2:16 PM)

They do have a chance. But the Terps need Jordan Williams to dominate the post and the guards will have to keep 'Nova out of the lane.

Jake (KC)

Who as more depth than Kansas? And yet they are some how flying under the radar this year. You think its time to start making some noise about the boys for Larryville?

Andy Katz
  (2:17 PM)

Not sure how Kansas is flying under the radar in the top three. KU is the new Big 12 favorite (probably shouldn't have been replaced by K-State) and a Final Four contender.

Kurt (NJ)

Loved your blog piece about the cancellation of Fairfield vs. Florida. I think the money and recruiting aspects hurt way more than our RPI ranking. The MAAC is a one bid conference. As a Fairfield alum, we haven't been to the big dance since '97, so I don't care what seed we are, I just want to be in the tourney.

Andy Katz
  (2:18 PM)

Thanks. The loss of the game won't dramatically change Fairfield's NCAA chances or seeding but it's a hit financially. I wanted to shed some light on what happens when these games get canceled. Ed Cooley has done a solid job of re-directing this team since it's early struggles. Fairfield should win the MAAC.

Tim (Media, PA)

Love listening to the ESPNU College Basketball podcast. You and Gottlieb do a great job. Any chance you two will devote a portion of a future podcast to breaking down the top mid-major teams and/or conferences? Would love to hear your and Gottlieb's take on the CAA meat grinder, the MVC, Cleveland State, the MAC, etc.

Andy Katz
  (2:20 PM)

Thanks for the suggestion. We have always tried to spread the wealth. Thanks for listening.

Dave (Kansas City, MO)

How many wins will it take to win the Big 12 this year? The conference looks pretty balanced so far...

Andy Katz
  (2:24 PM)

I'd say the winner has three losses -- minimum.

Daniel Z. (Fairfax, VA)

Mr. Katz, what do you think about George Mason making the tourney or maybe even another run this season?

Andy Katz
  (2:26 PM)

No shot as an at-large and it's not looking good to win the CAA tournament, but I wouldn't rule it out.

Ken (CA)

Your thoughts on the Gators? Are they finally coming together or just a couple of fluke performances?

Andy Katz
  (2:27 PM)

I'll lean toward coming together but not being dominant by any means. If this team looks to Tyus and Macklin more than relying on the guards they'll win their share of SEC games. But I'm not ready to pick Florida for first in the SEC East anymore. I'd lean toward Kentucky or Vandy.

Jim (LA)

How many teams from the Pac-10 do you think will make the big dance? Will UCLA and/or USC be included?

Andy Katz
  (2:29 PM)

WashingtonAnd .................Not sure yet.Washington State, Arizona, USC and UCLA are in contention. Not sure one or any will make it yet.

Josh (Tennessee)

Hey Andy, after watching Tennessee whip Memphis up and down the court like they did to Pitt and Villanova, do you think they are back in contention for the SEC? I was feeling pretty worried, still am somewhat, but I just want to see what your take on the whole situation is, do you think they have the talent to make a run in the tourney? Thanks.

Andy Katz
  (2:31 PM)

Not sure how to judge the Vols. I'm not buying yet like I was after beating Villanova in New York.

Carl H. (Petersburg, VA)

How many non major conferences will have more than 1 team in the NCAA Tournament in 2011?

Andy Katz
  (2:33 PM)

Let's go outside the power six for the major discussion. A-10, CUSA, WCC and MWC for sure. Horizon, Missouri Valley and maybe the WAC have a shot at multiple bids.

marcus (madison,wi)

Ok so I'm writing this way early its only thur. but I'm hoping I get in before all the other andy katz carized people do. Be honest does purdue have a shot and do you bel that they can at least make it to the final 4?

Andy Katz
  (2:34 PM)

Yes. No idea these questions were coming in Thursday. I'm not sure Purdue will, but the Boilermakers are definitely in the mix to get a high seed if they keep up this current pace.

Garrett (Richmond, VA)

How do you see BYU, UNLV and SDSU finishing in the Mountain West? Are there any other teams in that conference that will contend for an at-large bid?

Andy Katz
  (2:36 PM)

I'll saySan Diego StateBYUUNLVNew MexicoThe Lobos will be on the bubble.

Timothy (Ft Benning, GA)

Hey AndyI was wondering how much of an impact do you think the Enes Kanter appeal will have that Mark Emmert is the Head of NCAA and is the Ex-President of the University of Washington, with both Terrence Jones and Enes Kanter backing out of commitments to UW and both going to Kentucky?

Andy Katz
  (2:38 PM)

None. Emmert will have nothing to do with this ruling. If it's a staff decision then Emmert isn't apart of the amateurism staff. And if it's by committee then it's made by faculty reps and administrators from around the country.

Rob Futz (Dallas, Tx)

Missouri State finally has a first rate/class coach in Cuonzo Martin, first one since Steve Alford lead the Bears. Your thoughts on the Missouri State Bears program this year currently 11-3. Go Bears !! Thank you Andy.

Andy Katz
  (2:38 PM)

Martin is doing a great job. He was searching for an opportunity out of Purdue and got a quality gig. He has made Missouri State a contender.

Andrew (Provo, UT)

What do you think of BYU's move to the WCC next year?

Andy Katz
  (2:42 PM)

It's the best situation for basketball once football made the decision to go independent. Obviously the MWC is a better conference with San Diego State, UNLV and New Mexico as anchors. Gonzaga is a national program. Saint Mary's is now a consistent regional winner. BYU will strengthen this league even more.

Chris (Lexington, KY)

Why can't the NCAA be consistent with rulings? i.e, Newton, OSU, Selby, Renardo Sidney, Kanter, etc.?

Andy Katz
  (2:46 PM)

I have said there needs to be more of a strict penance chart. Also, these cases need to be fast-tracked more.

Steve (Va. Beach)

Andy, the ACC seems pathetic right now. Aside from Duke, who makes the tourney? My take is Carolina and Maryland only.

Andy Katz
  (2:47 PM)

That's what I predicted in the ACC primer. But FSU, Va Tech, BC, Miami and NC State are all still in contention. But there must be separation.

Andrew (Florida)

How does Joseph's departure effect Minnesota?

Andy Katz
  (2:55 PM)

It hurts the Gophers perimeter depth and they lose who they described as their top creator on offense. But if there are issues with him being on the team (second time this season) then it may be best he's gone.

Thanks for the questions this week. Enjoy the games.
