Brock Lesnar is coaching on Season 13 of 'The Ultimate Fighter'. Figured I'd start the chat early. Let's vent.
If lesnar beats jds does he really deserve a title shot?
Title shots don't always go to the most deserving. But I think Lesnar would be worthy of a title shot with a win over Dos Santos. Already, many are doubting whether Brock can beat a young, electric striker like JDS. Given the lack of options, Lesnar is the best choice.
Do you think Brock deserves a number one contenders match so soon?
Who are the other options? Frank Mir was probably considered for both a fight with Dos Santos and a coaching stint/fight opposite Lesnar. But the fans didn't clamor to see Lesnar-Mir III, so the UFC listened and went this way. I think Carwin was also considered. Beyond that, there just weren't any other options.
I guess we are gonna see if Brock is fine with getting punched in the face now. I'm loving the match up.
I'm with ya. It'll be interesting to see how Dos Santos' wrestling stacks up as well. He isn't on the level of Cain Velasquez. If Lesnar can take him down and control the fight on the ground, he can win.
Will Brock being the coach on TUF make this season the highest rated ever over the Kimbo / Rampage vs. Rashad season?
I would think so. I, for one, will watch every episode, start to finish. And I can't say that I did that during all past seasons.
Who you got? mirko or brendan???? and how
Brendan Schaub- TKO due to strikes. Rarely do I give picks so far in advance, but that one I feel good about.
brock vs dos santos???? wow surely didnt see that one coming!!!!!
It was certainly among the rumors. Not sure if we threw it out there last week in the chat. But we've talked about it in past chats. I didn't think Brock would go for it...I'm sure it was a tough sell for Lesnar to move to Las Vegas for 6 weeks. Dana White and the UFC brass is masterful for getting it done.
Hey Jon! Hope '11 is treating you well. While I love Brock Lesnar do you think a guy who hates talking, is as friendly as a rattlesnake, and a total of 8 pro MMA fights can be considered a legitimate coach?
I'll address the coaching part of it first. Wrestling is the best base for MMA, in my opinion. And I think learning that discipline from Brock Lesnar will be a great experience for the young welterweights. I think Lesnar will actually embrace it, now that he has agreed to do it. He also has a team that will help bridge the gaps in the other areas of MMA. Lesnar and his team's ability to coach these guys well is the least of my concerns.
And as for Lesnar being quiet, I think he'll put more into it than you think. He can be nice and personable when he wants to or has to.
Jon, what do you say are the odds of Brock hanging up the gloves if he loses in spectacular fashion for the 2nd straight time? You'd have to think the odds are pretty good, right?
I just hope the fight definitely happens in June, as Dana White suggests it well. Many have wondered aloud if Lesnar would even stay in MMA following the loss to Cain Velasquez. I think Brock deserves a lot of credit for accepting this matchup and this challenge. If he loses, that very well could be it.
With Brock still being relatively new to the MMA game, do you think he can provide valuable information as far as coaching is concerned?
Yes. He won't be as good as Georges St. Pierre was, nor should we expect him to be. But there have been other coaches who have left a little bit to be desired while on the show. I don't recall Rampage being all about coaching all the time.
Anik- love you on MMA Live. You keep that show together! Do you think Brock Lesnar will be on the show more, now that he'll be in Las Vegas for 'The Ultimate Fighter.'?
Thanks, Hec. I like the question. I do expect we will have Lesnar on the show more often, now that he will presumably spend 6 weeks in and around the UFC compound. Even if we get him on once more than we would have, that is a win.
Jon, Penn or Fitch? Machida or Couture?
Hard to pick against Jon Fitch in that one, but I'll wait until the fight gets closer. As for Couture-Machida, on the surface, it looks like a tough matchup for Randy. But the fact that he accepted the fight suggests to me that he thinks he can beat Lyoto. Otherwise, little incentive to take the fight. He doesn't need the money.
Chances Fedor fights three times this year? I am really excited about this Heavyweight Tournament!
I doubt very much he will fight three times this year. I would take two fights, provided one of them is against Alistair Overeem.
So with Brock, jds, Mir, big country, cro cop and schaub all locked up who does that leave for carwin?
You tell me. Has he fought Cheick Kongo yet? Stefan Struve?
Lesnar has to be better than Rampage..."Get up....do something" - Rampage
i looked forward to leben and stann so much i couldn't pick who i wanted to win. great win for stann and loved him on the show. such a class act. cannot wait to see him fight more
He's the most impressive individual I've ever met. And y'all know how much I like Florian.
Rumor is A-team 2 is pre production. Will Rampage let a title shot go by if he's to film the movie?
I really hope not. If Rampage beats Thiago Silva, he would certainly have a case for a title shot. Heck, I think you can make a case for him now. The last time I spoke to Rampage, all he would talk about was a rematch with Forrest Griffin. He still wants that fight.
How far do you think Arlovski will make it in the Strikeforce tourny?
If Pettis and Guida go at it, will it be a 3 or 5 round fight?
chael sonnen, whats the deal with that guy?
Just a disappointing situation all around. Selfishly, it hurts MMA Live a bit to not be able to use him as an analyst. Love or hate him, he is refreshing and has no filter.
agreed, sonnen is great but some bad choices all around
so any news on Nam Phan vs Cris Cyborg???
Hahahaha. Looks like Nam Phan will actually fight another man instead. A rematch with Leonard Garcia.
How far does Bones Jones' stock drop with a loss against Bader next month?
Given how many guys there are at the top of the 205 lbs. division, he would be at least 2-3 wins away from a title shot. A win, and he could get an immediate title shot. I think it's time. I've actually felt it's been time for quite...some time.
Mirko said it's his year...he can finally kick again....i say mirko third round tko
I will take your action.
who is on the show tomorrow?
As many of you know, MMA Live has moved to Friday nights (all but 5 weeks b/w now and June). Thus, details on the show aren't gonna be as concrete when we chat each week. I believe the analysts are K-Flo and Brian Stann. Not sure about the guests.
If guida can get past pettis surely he would be deserving of a title shot, do you agree?
Eh, I don't feel as strongly about it as you do. But, I guess 4 straight wins, including one over the incoming WEC champion, would have to be enough.
Random, but prediction for Pats-Jets? I hope Brady and company run up the score as much as possible....
After the 45-3 game, I told everyone who would listen that there would be a playoff rematch. I expect a closer game and the Jets to cover, but I think the Patriots will be too much. Sanchez will have to explode for Jets to win. Go Pats.
what do you think of the Davis vs Hamill match up? That could be a great fight!
Great fight. Best of luck, Matt. Phil Davis is a freak athletically.
I was unaware that Pettis and Guida were goin to fight... Whats your early prediction for that fight?
Pettis. But Guida is a tough out, especially so now under Greg Jackson. He really needed structure and has benefited from the specific gameplans/coaching. Pettis will probably be a 3-1 favorite, but I'm not sure he'll finish Guida.
What are your thoughts on Pettis taking the Guida fight versus waiting for a title shot?
He's about a week away from his 24th birthday. He's sharp as a tack right now and needs to stay that way by staying active. It's a difficult situation. The only outcome he simply couldn't have b/w Edgar and Maynard was a draw. I can't believe it happened, quite frankly. Just unlucky. But even if he loses to Guida, Pettis looks like a guy who will eventually get back to a championship fight.
Getting back to last week..I am onboard for Bones Jones to come out to Angry Johnny...permanently!
Yes! I just don't think he's gonna listen to me. Tried to hammer him about it on Twitter, likely to no avail. When Bones came out to Angry Johnny (by Poe) at UFC 94, it was the greatest. Florian agrees w/ me. Gotta stick with it.
UFC-WEC Merger Curse. Aldo and Cruz get injured and Pettis doesn't even get a title shot. Also, how long are Aldo and Cruz out for?
Hahahahaha. Sort of an interesting way to put it. Cruz will be out longer than Aldo. Hopefully Jose will be back this summer.
what do you think the chances are on a Henderson-Florian scrap once Kenny's knee is good to go?
0%. They are friends and train together. For the record, I told Kenny not to do it.
I think my girlfriend is cheating on me, what should I do?
How hot is she?
No, seriously, I would get a new girlfriend.
Who is your dark horse in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix?
I don't really have a dark horse. honestly. I don't think anyone other than Overeem, Fedor, or Barnett will win.
Can we expect to see a Chael Sonnen reality show? He needs a defibulator to get his career back on track. What do you suggest JA?
Just not sure what network would get in that game right now. That said, I'd watch it.
What do you expect out of Forrest at UFC 126. With over a year on the shelf do you think he'll be able to beat Franklin?
I think the layoff will be a factor. Just impossible to simulate what actually goes on in a fight. Close fight on paper. I think Griffin is the more powerful party, but leaning towards Franklin to win on points right now.
JA do you have kids? What is an appropriate age to start watching MMA?
I do not have kids. I think that decision depends on the parents and the individual. I wouldn't expose my kids to it until they were 8-9, but a 7 year-old could potentially be mature enough.
So who will Mir fight next? Big Country? And do you believe in Dana White's statement that Alistair Overeem is not a top 10 heavyweight?
Mir will indeed face Roy Nelson. I don't agree with Dana White that Overeem is not a Top 10 heavyweight. I've got him in the Top 5, along with Cain Velasquez, Junior Dos Santos, Fedor Emelianenko, and maybe Brock or Carwin.
Jon, Props to Pettis for risking his #1 contender spot to stay active against a live opponent. Rashad could learn a lot from him. Thoughts?
Rashad is just in a different situation entirely. He has already been a UFC champion, has already made a lot of money, and isn't 23 years old. But props to Pettis.
Jon, Gotta give credit to Anthony Pettis, your co host Evans could learn a lot from him
See previous answer. Do you guys think I'm just backin' my guy, or do you recognize the truth in what I'm saying.
If you could send Brock any camp to train where would it be?
I would send him to Freddie Roach's Wild Card Boxing Gym in California.
Why are only title fights five rounds? No logic in that, especially for top contenders.
I think part of the reason is simply that the sport is in its relative infancy. Also curious where you would draw the line. Do you make all No. 1 contender's bouts 5 rounds? You can't make all fights 5 rounds. We'd be there all night. I recognize that it's a problem, but there isn't an obvious solution.
Overeem has never beaten a top 10 guy EVER in his career. How can he be considered top 10??
I don't do formal rankings, because they don't mean anything. But I have several different criteria when determining where fighters fall. Most important for me is- if these 2 fighters fought today, who would win? That's the only thing that really matters. That's why I have Fedor above Werdum.
Is Brock-Dos Santos for an interim title?
Tell Daashman in Toronto to list 10 other guys better than overeem. Just for the entertainment value of seeing Jon Madson and Struve ranked higher than the Reem.
I personally think Brock took those 3 or 4 months to work on things with his stand up and study alot from his fight with Cain.
I think he was hunting and letting his body recover. We forget that Lesnar is still not all that far removed from a violent bout with diverticulitis. I'm also not sure how good his stand-up/boxing will ever be. He doesn't look like a guy who will ever throw kicks with regularity, and his hands just aren't consistently fluid. Paging Roach, Freddie.
What are your thoughts on the quality of TUF contestants. Are there any Forrest Griffins or K Flos left?
Very generally speaking, I do think the level of fighter on TUF has gone down a bit. But there are still gonna be diamonds in the rough. I doubted Court McGee repeatedly. He looks like he can hang at 185.
Is Big Nog done? Any chance of him getting Carwin?
I don't think he's done, but that's not the fight for him.
JA, look forward to your chat every week. You really bring your A game. I watch MMA with my 3 year old and he loves it. He also isn't trying to beat other kids up...it's all about how well you communicate with your kid. Teach them the right and wrongs and that it's just a sport.
Thanks, Brad. And good for you. My only concern with a 3 year-old would be the blood. So I might screen fights beforehand. Wouldn't want my 3-year old watching Miguel Torres vs. Joseph Benavidez, for example.
Why arent people giving Bader a chance against Bones?
Because Jon Jones has an 84" wingspan.
The answer to the rounds problem is to make the top three fights of the night five rounders.
I kind of like that idea, but it's too simplistic. If you go back and look at recent cards, certain fights that fall late in the night are simply not worthy of being 5-rounders. Next weekend at the UFC Fight for the Troops, should Dunham-Guillard be a 5-rounder? I don't see why it would be.
JA who do you think will win the coaches challenge on this season of TUF? I don't know, but the thought of Brock and Dos Santos competing in basketball or bowling really amuses me.
I am amused. Highly anticipating this season. I would watch Lesnar do anything- fight, hunt, even babysit. Can't wait.
When is the UFC going stop playing games and give us Torres vs Faber
Just biding their time. Gotta build it up, now that both fighters are in the UFC. It is an eventuality.
Similar to boxing, main card fights should be longer than undercard fights.
That has merit, Vinod. But boxing has far more rounds to play with. They can do 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12-rounders. Only 2 real options in MMA- 3 or 5.
So Brock should hang it up if he loses to the current champion and the #1 contender?
Question wasn't whether or not he should. Question was whether or not he will. I doubt Lesnar would stick around if he doesn't feel as though he can be the best, or even second-best. He will beat most MMA heavyweights in the world with his size and his wrestling and his hammerfists. But if he can't beat Velasquez or Dos Santos, why hang around?
Johnny Boy in Tucson- love the passion, but questions are way too long. The shorter the question, the better chance it gets answered here.
First time poster long time reader. Will JDS be using an interpreter during TUF.
Thanks for posting, Chris. We had Dos Santos on MMA Live at UFC 121 back in October. His manager, Ed Soares, was standing by, but he didn't really even need him. He comprehends English very well and is getting much better with his speech. I don't think you will see an interpreter on TUF. If so, minimally.
With my guy Mirko and Big Nog both looking like they're on the way out, why not throw them together one more time?
No problem with that.
Where does Thiago Silva go with a win over Rampage? Title Shot? Number 1 contender Match?
He sets up a fight with another guy in the Top 5. Doubtful it'll be a title shot, but we'll see. I know he and Jon Jones would like to go at it. Silva also wouldn't mind avenging losses to Rashad Evans and Lyoto Machida.
I really like Brock Lesnar but do you think he can beat JDS??
I think he can, sure. Not saying he will. For me, the fight hinges on Dos Santos' ability to survive the first few minutes and avoid takedowns. If he does that, he'll beat Lesnar by TKO.
so you dont think Jonathan Brookins can be a factor at 155?
Not a champion.
Does Marcus Davis make it back to the UFC?
Ramapge/Thiago has me salivating! Jon, you have an early "lean" yet?
No, Marcus Davis does not make it back to the UFC. And as for Rampage-Thiago Silva, I really have no idea, dude. I think it's a tough fight for both guys. Dream matchup.
Chost! I know you have stated numerous times that the UFC will not have a tournament or a grand prix. However I think a GP in the 155 division makes sense with so many contenders we could have a GP Champ and a regular champ. Thoughts?
It might make some sense b/c of the clutter near the top of the division. But I just don't think the UFC needs to formalize lightweight fights by putting them in a tournament. If Kenny Florian loses to Donald Cerrone, he's out of the title picture (I know they aren't fighting). If Mark Bocek loses to Ben Henderson, he's out of the title picture.
Tournaments are great for smaller promotions but don't belong at the elite level, in my opinion. Thoughts?
I just don't think it's necessary.
Shaq says he wants to fight Hong Man Choi in the UFC. Will that happen?
If the UFC were to ever allow a super-heavyweight fight and an exhibition of sorts, it would be for Shaquille O'Neal. When I interviewed Shaq in Boston, he didn't seem to be kidding when calling out Hong Man Choi. We'll see.
Any idea of what Roger Huerta's next move is?
I'd imagine we will see him during Season 4 of Bellator.
Why the Brock shock ???? Since when don't former Champs get a automatic rematch? The only shock is that he has to fight Dos Santos first !!!!!
I have no issue with Lesnar fighting in a No. 1 contender's bout.
How long before the UFC puts together a Featherweight season of TUF? I really think they need to promote the little guys and mix up the show some more.
I am starting to wonder just how long the show will continue. At one point, Dana White mentioned they'd be done after 12 seasons. Here we are on the cusp of Season 13. But I can assure you, if we get to a 15th season or so, you will see featherweights.
why so long for shogun and rashad 2 fight
Shogun has been out with a knee injury. At least we are now only 8 weeks away. Been a long wait.
I am really excited for SF's heavyweight tourney, but why the heck is Arlovski involved? The guy hasn't been good in 5 years, if he was even good then.
Name recognition, I guess. He's got no shot.
Thoughts on Strikeforce not seeding their Heavyweight tournament? Seems like a walk to the Finals for Barnett which is odd seeding.
Seeding would've been a good idea, Michael. Bracket is the only thing you can take issue with. But as long as we get Fedor vs. Overeem, I'm good.
What is your take on Herschel Walker in MMA?
Proud of the man for wanting to compete at his age. And he obviously loves MMA and desires to bring the sport attention and exposure. That said, his fight was really just a glorified exhibition. And sometimes it is frustrating when major media outlets give more coverage to Herschel Walker than Georges St. Pierre.
i never get any love in mma live chat BOOOOO
Sorry, Trey! We are loaded in here on the snow day.
Another great show....Gotta go to work ,Thanks again.
Thanks for playing.
If I don't get to your question here, follow me on Twitter- @Jon_Anik. I will get back to you.
whoa whoa whoa. theirs only 1 hector and he's from chicago!!! not liking bones jones smug attitude. dude oozes too much cockiness
He is a confident man, bordering on cocky, perhaps. I know others share your opinion. That's not the image that comes across when he's at ESPN, though.
Do you think SF has a better top 8 of heavyweights than the UFC?
I don't really care, Brett. I am not trying to sound condescending, either. Perhaps Strikeforce has a deeper heavyweight division right now. I just think the comparison is kinda fruitless. Top to bottom roster-wise, the UFC is far and away the #1 MMA organization in the world.
will Carlos Condit ever get a UFC title shot?
How long before Kos is back?
It's gonna be awhile. He won't really be able to train at full strength until April or so.
NOT A QUESTION.You are my favorite MMA conduit, you are quick witted and that make an entertaining show.
What are the chances of the SF GP completing intact: ie not having to plug in alternates? A rumored Sept finale seems quite lofty.
I can't believe you are chatting from my Mom's room. That is crazy. As to your question, a September finale seems highly ambitious.
Chost, why are you so defensive about the UFC/Strikeforce Heavyweight divisions?
I guess I just don't enjoy the conversation, Tim. I guess I think the UFC's top 4 may be better than Strikeforce's. But Strikeforce may have a better top 8. Let me get my 'Who Cares' folder.
Brian Stann was really great on MMA Live. I've become a fan.
Tremendous response on Stann's appearance. So much so that he will be back this week.
jon if lensar wins in june that means he has to re-sign a deal right ?due to the fact that his last fight under contract will be against dos santos, if he wins in june will the new contract be a 3 fight contract ???? correct me if im wrong on anything i said.
More to the point, Lesnar will retire from the UFC when he wants to. The money is great, even if Brock doesn't really need it.
Jon... A dream match you wanna see this year?
Anthony Pettis vs. Evan Dunham, Florian v. Cerrone. Tops on my wish list, though, is Overeem vs. Fedor.
Will I ever act again?
When is Bonnar fighting again?
Not sure. Gonna text him right now.
You guys started without me?!??!?!
You are late, Dan. Last call...
Hope you're not driving while you text him :)
Definitely not. :)
Hendo back in the UFC with a couple more wins ?
I think that door has closed. I think he'll retire after a couple more wins.
What was Cris Carter's excuse for standing you up last week?
Was actually just trying to be funny on Twitter. Merril Hoge was scheduled to work with me, not CC.
Will the UFC ever come back to the garden?
Absolutely. What a great crowd that was.
What happened with CC?
Nothing. He wasn't scheduled in the afternoon.
UFC 129 fight card complete for Toronto yet? Are you guys making the trip up to do a show?
Card isn't complete yet. Right now, it's 50-50 as to whether or not MMA Live will make it to Toronto. Fingers firmly crossed! Would be a thrill to be there with 35,000+.
If Mark Hominick loses...who gets the shot at Aldo?
Chad Mendes, my 2011 Breakout Fighter of the Year. Appreciate the softball.
I love Akiyama, but he will never contend at 185 in the UFC. Is he on the chopping block if he can't beat Nate?
They may keep him around b/c he's been involved in some exciting fights. But he doesn't look the part of middleweight contender. A win over Marquardt would be a God-send for Akiyama.
It would be great to have you here....keep up the great work.
Stann vs. Wanderlei, Buy or Sell
Sell. I think Stann could very well get Demain Maia, after calling him out (mentioning him as a fighter he'd like to face) on MMA Live last week.
Does silva finish belfort?
I think so, yes.
Most underrated UFC fighter?
Good question. Mark Bocek.
Ah the joys of twitter humor. Will you guys be doing more ESPN Live remotes this year? Enjoy the after fight format and energy it has.
I hope so. I can tell you guys, for the first time, that flights have been booked for MMA Live at UFC 126. We will be doing a post-fight show live from Vegas on ESPN2!
Who is less marketable: JDS or Gray Maynard
Maynard. Dos Santos is a dynamic, charismatic guy. I'm hoping that personality will come out on 'The Ultimate Fighter'.
Who has been the best coach on TUF? 3 horse race between Nog, Tito and GSP?
Rashad Evans put a lot into it, but I think you've got a pretty good Top 3 there.
Have you begun BJJ training yet?
No. If I lived in Los Angeles, I might've had my first session today. Instead, I was shoveling.
I saw on your twitter account that you were 'shadowing' Reischea Canidate this past week. Can you give us any information on that?
Well, she's gonna have a baby soon. So hopefully I'll get some run when she is off. We'll see what happens. I'll be ready, should they call.
You need to get on the Jim Rome show and talk some MMA!!
I wouldn't screen that call. Would love to, obviously.
I think Brock should get more boxing skills. He's got long arms he should use them. What do you think?
Sure. Maybe he can spend a few days with Freddie Roach during TUF filming. He's got a long way to go.
Too many doubters for Mir. His knowledge his body transformations and determination are overlooked
I just think it is hard for a lot of fans to envision him beating the top 4 right now.
Chuck did great in both of his seasons on TUF also
Yes, he did.
i can only afford one card in new jersey should i go to fedor-silva or rua-suga?
It'll be more cost-efficient to go to Fedor's fight. But if you've never been to a UFC show, that's the direction I'd go.
what makes you think Roach will coach Brock?
I got in a freak car accident, but avoided the brunt of it. If I was texting at the time I wouldn't be here to enjoy your MMA chats!
Sorry to hear that. Glad you made it out all right.
I know my first question was really long BUT pls address it if possible I really want an insiders thoughts
Hit me up on Twitter, Jay. Or email me - firstname.lastname@example.org.
I was rooting for both Carwin and Cain to destroy Brock, but hope he wins now b/c i dont wanna see him hang em up...Brock is must see TV
He is definitely must-see TV. So curious to see how he handles this particular spotlight.
Will we ever se an MMA card on ESPN?
I hope so, Andrew. Someday.
If the UFC could sign any fighter not in the organization (not fedor) who would you like to see them sign?
Philadelphia's finest- Eddie Alvarez.
Alright, folks. Back to the shovel. Overflow questions can be sent to @Jon_Anik on Twitter. MMA Live is this Friday at 12AM ET, immediately following Friday Night Fights. Until then, be safe. And don't text and drive. -JA
