It's been a rough few weeks for the suddenly not-so-mighty Mavs. But don't fret: Dirk Nowitzki will be back soon. Fire away with your questions.
With Dirk and Roddy out JJ is the only guy that can create his own shot. I thought Terry could but I realize his game is predicated on picks being set by 7' guys that can shoot. Without Caron is this team any different than past ones? How are they going to survive when the slow paced, half court grind fest that is the playoffs begins.
This team is still different than previous Mavs editions. That's because of the defensive tone set by Tyson Chandler and DeShawn Stevenson. The Mavs have obviously never had a presence in the middle with Chandler's athleticism and intensity. But they'll need Roddy B to find his rhythm by the playoffs to have a chance to do real damage.
Do you know the primary trade targets (all of them you know and believe) the Mavericks will pursue in the next month. I respect our players and dont like to talk about upgrading them but Dirk deserves it, shoot Dallas deserves it! Let me know something!
The Mavs will turn over all the stones, but I don't see them acquiring a big-name guy unless a team just wants to dump salary for Caron Butler's expiring contract. I think it's much more likely they use their $4.3 million trade exception from the summer deal with Charlotte to get a complementary player. The Mavs also have their full midlevel exception, which could come in handy when vets get buyouts.
Have their been any more rumblings about playing a game at Cowboys Stadium? AAC is dull during the regular season so a chance of pace would be nice to see.
Haven't discussed the subject with Mark Cuban recently, but he has said it would have to be a special event. I'll check on whether a playoff game at JerryWorld would be a possiblity this season.
With haw attrociously bad the Cavs have been playing I know they have to be looking at dumping salary so do you see us maybe reuniting with Antawn Jamison?
How does Jamison fit in the rotation? He's a better scorer than Shawn Marion, but Marion is a much, much better defender. I don't think Jamison is a good fit.
Do you think the Mavs should sacrifice the future and go all-in for this year and next by trading Roddy while his value is so high?
Only if it's for a proven superstar. And I'd argue that his value isn't that high considering his foot issues.
Mavs season is over unless we make a trade right? I know our 3 headed monster of Cuban, Donnie, and Carlisle is not afraid to pull the trigger if something presents itself but that answer is so cliche, so how agressive are they being? They making the call or sitting by the phone?
Take a deep breath. You can't push the panic button until you've given Roddy Beaubois a month to shake off the rust and mesh with this team. And I mean a month after he finally starts playing. The Mavs will be very aggressive exploring their options -- they always are -- but that doesn't mean they'll find one they like.
Deshawn in the 3 point contest a possibility, the guy is deadly now from long range.
He doesn't want to do it. He's afraid it would mess up his rhythm.
Can Deshawn Stevenson get Comeback Player of the Year or will that go to someone like Blake Griffin?
The NBA doesn't have a comeback player of the year. It has a most improved player. Stevenson deserves to be considered as a darkhorse candidate, but that award typically goes to young guys on the rise, not 10-year veterans who go from the end of the bench to valuable contributors.
Why is Mahimni not getting more minutes? Seems like when he gets the minutes he brings energy and can contribute, so whats up?
He's kind of a poor man's Tyson Chandler. The Mavs have the real thing. Brendan Haywood isn't getting many minutes, much less Mahinmi. Carlisle considers Mahinmi more of a center than a power forward.
With Butler done for the year, what is the mavs biggest need to make this team good again?
A guy who can create his own shot. They've got two of those guys who are injured: Roddy Beaubois and Dirk Nowitzki. I wouldn't mind seeing the Mavs getting a good, proven backup point guard, too.
Derek Harper says Roy Tarpley was the most "talented" Maverick ever but how do you say that when you have guys like Dirk and Kidd - whats your opinion?
If Roy Tarpley would have had Dirk Nowitzki's focus and work ethic, he would have been right up there with Karl Malone and Charles Barkley as the best power forwards of that day. He's one of the biggest wastes of talent in NBA history.
Do you the feel the Mavericks need to make a trade to bolster their 3 position? Namely Shane Battier or Stephen Jackson.
Again, if the Mavs can get a proven guy without giving up more than Butler's expiring deal, I'd do it. Maybe the Bobcats will get in salary-dumping mode before the deadline. Don't think that will happen with the Rockets, especially to an in-state rival.
Can Ajinca be the next Channing Frye? Their games seem eerily similar on the surface.
That's a good comparison. Ajinca is a little longer, but Frye is more physical, which is a nice way of saying that Ajinca is pretty soft at this point.
Do you think Roddy Beaubois is going to return sooner than we think?
All he's done so far is jump shooting. He still isn't running or cutting. He's still weeks away.
If we had won the title back in 06, do you think Dirk would have re-signed here?
Absolutely. I don't think he would have even brought up the possibility of leaving if he had a championship ring. That's the only reason he even briefly considered leaving. He stayed because he's extremely loyal to Mark Cuban and the organization.
do you know if Dirk is playing tonight
Rick Carlisle declined to discuss it after this morning's shootaround. I'd consider him doubtful. Maybe he can play Friday night in San Antonio.
Why is everyone going so crazy about losing Caron for the season? Stevenson and Marion have filled in nicely on the offensive end and always bring it defensively. Won't Dirk coming back and Roddy making his season debut put things right back where they were before the injuries?
Butler's absence hurts because he was a guy the Mavs could run the offense through. Marion and Stevenson can score a little, but you won't see the Mavs getting them the ball in iso situations. Marion can post up, cut to the basket and finish in transition. Stevenson is a shooter.
The Lakers have Jack Nicholson, the Knicks have Spike Lee, and the Mavs seem to have an older gentleman in a cowboy hat that stands up at least 50 times a game and shakes some kind of noise-maker. Who is that guy??
Can't think of his name right off the top of my head, but the front-row Mavs fan with the wild wardrobe is a Dallas real estate baron.
You're late, Timmy.
Thanks for noticing, John. We'll end this right on time. If I didn't get to your questions, feel free to hit me up on Twitter @espn_macmahon.
