Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Hey Sportsnation, let's talk hoops. Thanks for joining me. I'm here at the PTC offices ready to roll. "Are you a professional Santa? How lovely."

Tom (Sacramento)

Is Pooh Jeter a keeper for the Kings as far as a spark/change of pace guy off the bench?

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Certainly in the short term. He might be a long term guy.

Chris Baker (England)

All those saying the Suns should trade Steve Nash...surely that would be like the Pistons when they tried to retool on the fly and traded Billups. How did that all work out for Dumars?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

I think the point is, no one wants to watch Nash finish is amazing career on a lousy team.

Matt (Wisconsin)

Would you rather have Rose or Rondo as your point guard? I know you prefer pass first point guards so I'm guessing you go with Rondo. But I think if he was on a team that didn't have 3 future hall of famers, he would prove to be vastly overrated.

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Right. Making that choice depends on who else we have. Love both guys.

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Right. Making that choice depends on who else we have. Love both guys.

Jim (D.C.)

The Wiz have two keepers, right (Wall and McGee)? And Blatche does not fit next to JaVale. Do you agree the 4 next to him has to be a physical presence and well above average defensive rebounder?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

McGee does not deserve that kind of status. Wiz need upgrades and should not worry how they fit next to him. He may not be a long term starter. And no, the best fit to him is a shooting big. Hard to have two bigs with no range.

ilya (portland)

With the nuggets slowly imploding, is it possible that clippers may sneak in with an 8 seed? Would that put Blake in MVP discussion (not saying he'd win though)?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Nope, nice try though.

Maxwell (New York)

Where is Carmelo Anthony going to be playing in March?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

I'd guess NJ.

Paul (Portland, OR)

Give me some good news today, sir. I'm mourning the Oregon Ducks' loss.

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Back when I cared about college football, Florida got killed by Nebraska in the title game. Came back and won the next year. Focus on that possibility.

Jared (Alberta)

Hi David, who is the most promising NBA player you've worked with who hasn't performed up to what you may have expected?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

I'd lean to Orien Greene. Even though he wasn't even invited to Portsmouth, I felt over the summer he was with me that he was going to be a long term NBA guy. He's made too many mistakes for that to happen, but it looks like he's killing the D League and may get another shot.

Billy (New York)

David I got a vibe that you're with me on this one, the nickname Heatles is not going to last, right? Cheers!

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Right. I see them as the dynamic duo, only with with 2 Batmans.

Benjamin (Boise)

Just read the Blazers aren't willing to deal Batum. What do you think about his future/ceiling?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

It's high, not quite all-star but very very good.

Henry Abbott (Flemington NJ)

If you had Andray Blatche as a client, what would you say to him?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Hey, do you know Henry Abbott from TrueHoop? He lives near you. I would make him watch "A Christmas Carol". And I would ask him what his future is going to be like if he does not change his tune.

Rob (NY)

Which player would you pay to go see? Lebron, Durant, Rose, Kobe, Rondo?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Wade, or LBJ.

Leroy (Wabash, IA)

What was your take on Tom Haberstroh's suggestion that the Heat look into acquiring Greg Oden?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

It's a good idea.

Dave (Oakland)

Will Curry and Ellis ever work in the backcourt together?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Work? Yes. Titles? No.

Jonathan (Miami)

Any chance Billups gets a buyout from the Nets and ends up in Miami for the veterans minimum?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Interesting idea. I don't know.

Ali Nagib (Chicago)

Hollinger (in particular) has criticized Derrick Rose for his inability to get to the line, especially given how much he drives the lane. Do you think his 19 FTA performance against the Celtics (and 9 more last night) represent a turning point in that department or is it just a fluke?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

It could be either. Bears watching. Two games just does not tell us enough.

Anthont4000 (DC)

Is there any way Melo could at least finish the year in Denver?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Of course. If he signs his extension.

Ryan (Chicago)

Thorpocalypse, Right now Keith Bogans is the worst SG in the league according to Holligner's advanced stats, how much impact do you think it would make for the Bulls to replace his 18 MPG with a guard who was average instead of horrible.

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

I think it would make a sizeable impact.

Az (Chicago)

Is it fair to say Melo doesn't care about winning if he accepts a trade to NJ?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

No.

Aaron (Seattle)

Is Blake Griffin a Top 5 PF in the league already?!?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

He's right there.

Joe (NY)

Why aren't any of the players you train ever any good?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

"Any good" is a relative term. But maybe I just have to work harder.

D. Hsu (Mie-Prefecture, Japan)

Do you want to start giving Derrick Rose some credit for blossoming into the top 3 PG that he is? Instead of prematurely predicting Wall having a higher ceiling than Rose.

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

"Prematurely predicting"? How can it not be premature if I'm asked a question before the season?

Johnson (Atlanta)

What is Blake Griffin's ceiling? Does he have one???

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

It's higher than his incredible vertical.

a friend (facebook usa)

David, I think one reason why so many people like and respect you is because we get to see another side of you on Facebook. It's a good reminder that you have a life beyond the NBA, and like the rest of us you should not be defined just by any one thing. Sorry to post such a lame comment, and I hope you have a great new year.

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Thanks. I enjoy seeing all my friends and how much the NBA means to them. I also get motivated with how many of you do such caring things for your loved ones. I'm at David B. Thorpe on Fbook and @coachthorpe on Twitter.

Henry Abbott (Flemington NJ)

You can fix the NBA with Christmas movies? You're a magician.

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Indeed. Don't you have a blog to write?

Aaron (Seattle)

Wouldn't Carmelo be the perfect fit for the Clips?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Perfect? No. But he would be very helpful for sure.

Marc (Houston)

With all the assets the Rockets have....do u see them doing anything before the trade deadline?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Absolutely.

Nick (OB)

Is Thibs a little too intense? I'm pretty sure he hasn't taken a seat all year.

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

He'll settle down a bit I'm sure. But he's been great. My choice for COY.

Tom (Chi)

What are the Bulls most likely, and then best options, for SG trades? Rip seems to be off the board; would it be OJ Mayo or JR Smith? Courtney Lee?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Mayo or Lee.

Terry (SLC)

What do you see missing from the Jazz to get them over the hump?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Mayo or Lee. And no, that's not a repeat answer.

Gabe (Brooklyn)

Hey David,How come Steve Nash gets so much more love than Jason Kidd? I know Nash definitely has the edge these past few years as he hasn't slowed down at all and Kidd has, but juxtaposing their careers, Kidd still was elite for longer, he did more with less talent, and though Nash is a much better shooter, Kidd was a far superior defender and rebounder (two more important skills in my book when it comes to winning). Yet so many fans and writers consider Nash the point guard of this generation. Is it because of the (largely unearned) back-to-back MVPs?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

I think it's because of how they are playing now. It would be different if espn.com was this huge 10 years ago.

Dale (Ohio)

Coach, how can anyone suggest that you don't know what you are doing. Kevin Martin was a lightly recruited high school player that we all thought would play 4 years of college then come back here for a regular job. Now he's got a chance to lead the league in most free throws made and most 3's made, which has never happened in NBA history. I know you will deflect the credit, but everyone who knows Kevin knows the truth. And on a sidenote, check out who is the most improved player in college this season. It's Logan Aronhalt from Albany U. Logan's dad was Kevin's high school coach, and he spent much of the summer with you in Tampa. You're a genius coach and we love you.

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Thanks. I'm very proud of Kevin and Logan. Zanesville is a great spot for young basketball talent.

dave (denver)

Have you seen meaningful progress in Evan Turner's game? He strikes me as a "complete" player, and yet I worry this may not be readily apparent to my untrained eyes.

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Not meaningful, but progress, yes. Featuring him in rookie report tomorrow.

JD (NY)

David, does Favors remind you of a young Amar'e, KG, or someone completely different? And if it were your call, would you hang onto him or trade him for Melo? (One word answers, as you like, are all that's required!)

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Amare without the bucket getting skills, yet.

SteveFitz (Chicago, IL)

Add Noah to your "improved players I worked with list". Us Bulls fans couldn't be happier coach, thanks.

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Please remember, some guys get lots of different coaches to help them. To assume I was the key guy is a mistake.

mendel (fl)

David is it safe to say, Lebron james is already a Hall Of Famer. Just read a stat that hes the 11th player in history to record 16k points, 5k assists and 500 Blocks (all before age 27) sounds HOF worthy to me.

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

If he retired tomorrow, yes, I think he'd get in.

Keary (Brooklyn, NY)

Which client/player surprised you the most in terms of unfair rep and actual work ethic? Thanks and keep up the good work, Coach.

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

I had an amazing time coaching Earl Clark. He threw up every day for a week, and came back to finish every single rep of every drill he missed. Then once he got into shape, he was a beast with a perfect attitude. He's going to be great in Orlando. Amazing that he was given away.

Dan (Philly)

Will Turner learn to grow and not force shots and increase his range or is Evan Turner another Ohio State No.2 pick who hasn't done well?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

We have every reason to believe that he will get much better.

C-Dot (Unionville, CT)

Am I crazy for thinking that, when all is said and done, Hasheem Thabeet will have a better career than Blake Griffin?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

That's a ban my friend. I have not banned someone in a long time. But you, sir, have crossed the line. :)

Damon (Santa Cruz, CA)

Coach, greetings from sunny Santa Cruz. Is saying Griffin's ceiling is as high as Karl Malone too high for Blake?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Yes.

keith new haven connecticut [via mobile]

Has lbj reached his full potential?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

No. Still has lots of weapons to sharpen. FT's, 3's, and post game.

Shawn (Rochester, MN)

Foye/Roy, Flynn/Curry, Johnson/Cousins. Why do I bother being a Wolves fan? Can we just hire someone that drafts based on DraftExpress?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Those are some huge swings and misses. But it's early for the last 2.

Az (Chicago)

Do you agree with the assertion that Hakeem gets too much credit for helping D12?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

I don't know how much time they spent together. 3 weeks, and he deserves lots of credit. 3 days, not so much.

Tom (Chi)

Most Overrated player in the NBA is ____?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Harrington?

Matt (NJ)

Why is Brook Lopez not becoming the great player that many of us thought he would?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

I don't know. Was discussing that with the real Henry Abbott this morning. It's very interesting. And a bit sad.

John (Austin, TX)

David, On a scale of 1-10 for Sixers point guards, where 1 = Royal Ivey, 5 = Andre Miller and 10 = Mo Cheeks, where do you see Jrue Holiday ending up?Thanks

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

A solid 8.

JasonD (TN)

Speaking of Earl Clark. What kind of talent do you see him developing into (stat wise)? Thanks

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

I see him as a slightly better version of Odom. At best. Which is very good. But he has to get coached up, and allow himself to listen.

Az (Chicago)

Why can't Tyrus Thomas be consistent?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

He's been very good this year.

edizz1e (Queens, NY)

How much do you charge for your training sessions?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

It's not something I'll discuss here. But it's more than what I did in 1993, where I charged $25 an hour. That's how I got my start when I left coaching a high school team. I needed to make $400 a week, so I lived on the outdoor courts in Countryside.

Dre Dre (LA)

Who's your MVP right now?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Wade and Bron share it. I'll not consider any others.

Jason (Boston)

David, I've been reading your chats for years. I get legitimately bummed when I miss one or when it's canceled. I love your attitude towards life and work, and your succinct insights. Thanks for the job you do.

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Thank you Jason. Means a lot to me. Thanks for reading them.

Chris (Germany)

How underutilized is Patrick Patterson?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

He's in the rotation now, and likely will be forever more.

Matt (Orlando)

SVG loves Earl Clark. Aside from Hubie Brown, no one gives him and his coaching staff the credit they deserve for developing players. Can you give him some love?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

He's the 3rd best coach in the league.

tilak (buffalo)

hey dave,in your opinion which team has the least talent in the league (not worst record), and 2nd part, who has done the most wiht the least talent?thanks

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

I'd say Cleveland has the least amount of talent. Maybe Detroit. I don't know about the 2nd part.

Iain (Edinburgh)

Who would you rather have a prime Wade or prime Kobe?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Prime Kobe was better, barely. I'd take Wade, easier to play with.

Paul (Portland, OR)

Are 1 and 2 Phil and Pops?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

You bet.

bob (chicago)

Considering age, and potential, if the Bulls were to offer Rose for Wade straight up, what would Pat Riley say?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

No.

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

No.

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

No.

Bones (Utah)

SVG is 3rd? Phil Jackson, Jerry Sloan, Greg Popovich, which one of these guys is he ahead of? If you say Sloan because no ring, where is SVG's?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

I'd take SVG over Sloan. It's ok if you won't.

Eric (Long Island)

Wait a second... you don't think Amar'e Stoudemire is a legit MVP candidate??

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

No I don't.

J.B. (PA)

SVG might be the 2nd best coach in his family.

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

No way.

Dustin (Austin)

I won tickets to Spurs/Dallas game at a radio remote by knowing the answer to "what sport was Duncan on track to go to the Olympics for before he started playing basketball" Do you know! :)

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Was it swimming?

Gilmore (Bay Area)

Why would you not consider anyone else for MVP? That seems ridiculous.

marcus (michigan)

who do you think is the best pg in the nba

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

CP3, and he'd be my distant 3rd in MVP voting.

Bernard (Chicago)

It's old news at this point, but what did you think of Thibs benching Boozer for the 4th quarter against the Nets? Also, how can someone who played for Jerry Sloan all those years still have such ambivalence toward playing D?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

I love seeing coaches coach. Period.

Leroy (Wabash, IA)

Why are your chats limited to 1 hour. Seems like you could easily fill a 2 hour time slot with the volume of questions you get?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

There are lots of guys and gals to answer chats from people.

Matt (Chicago)

CP3 3rd in MVP? Seriously? He looks slow this year, I think those injuries have caught up to him. I wouldn't even put him in the top 3 pg in the game anymore. D Will is the best pg in the game

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Shoots it great. Passes it great. Rarely turns it over. We're watching different CP3's my friend.

Eugene (Los Angeles)

Phil Jackson is overrated.

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

The evidence suggests otherwise.

Az (Chicago)

Did you really say last year you would take Brook Lopez over Derrick Rose?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

I probably did, for the same reason Oden went ahead of KD. Lopez looked like he was headed to franchise status. Something happened there. Something ugly.

Steven (Tulsa, Ok)

The Oregon football offence was inspired at least in part by break-neck basketball offences? Can basketball learn anything from the Oregon football experiment?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Not really. Speed has always been a factor in hoops, as has pace. See Suns, Phoenix.

Charlie (Bored at work)

If you were coaching your team of choice, and you had the option of creating your own superstar trio to coach, who would be in Team Thorpe (include 2 average or sub-par players to round out the starting 5)?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Wade, Bron, Dwight, Kyle Lowry, Love.

Eric (Long Island)

Thorpe... can we ban you from your own chat for saying Amar'e isn't an MVP candidate? Do you know how bad the Knicks would be without him?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

I pick MOP's, not MVP's. Sorry about that.

Mike (Mpls, MN)

Corey Brewer was a much improved shooter last year. He's still largely been a net positive for the Wolves even though his shooting has regressed. Will his shot ever be consistent?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

I think the wing additions in Minny left CB questioning his future, and that doubt has hurt his confidence as a shooter. I expect improvement. His defense has been other-worldly though.

Sunny (Queens, NY)

Can you give us some insight into Tom thibs defense because from the outside I can't believe how he has improved defenses so much? Secondary question: Are thibs teams better because of the actual theory or simply preaching defense first?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Strategy is great, practice sessions are great, game adjustments are great. Yep, that'll do it. Remember how I always says it's a coaches league? Now you see why.

Dennis (IL)

David, do you see anyone on the Cavs roster worth keeping through the inevitable rebuild?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

There is no one that is a must keep.

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Time's up for me. Gotta meet my wife for lunch. Panera here we come. Thanks everyone for over 700 questions. I'll be back next week. Be safe.
