Sorry I'm late today, folks. Just got back from Bristol, an overnight trip to the Mother Ship. let's get started.
The Patriots come into their game with the Jets on an 8 game winning streak, beating their opponents on average by 3 TD's & against some pretty good teams, 4 of which are still in the playoffs. I don't the Jets will shut down New England completely but what will the defense have to do to get the win in Foxborough?
The defense has to keep everything in front of them, tackle well to limit YAC, don't give Brady an easy pre-snap read. You have to make him make post-snap reads. You have to pressure more than they did against Manning, but they have to be well-timed pressures.
The Patriots used to be the most hated team. Thanks to the Jets and their big mouths, everyone wants NE to win now. Thanks Ryan & Cromartie!
I'm sure that was their goal when they opened their mouths.
Rich, Any chance Mangini returns to the Jets in any capacity? Him and Mike T. still seem pretty close and plus he's got that house in NJ.
Better chance of seeing Cromartie give Brady a man hug.
No Jenkins, no Woody, no Leonard... don't those losses doom the Jets?
Big losses, no doubt, but the Jets have good depth at those positions. They subscribe to the "Next Man Up" philosophy. Every team has injuries.
Hey Rich, Thanks for taking my question. What are the chances Shotty returns to the Jets next season. I know they won a playoff game, but many of their losses this season can be blamed on him. Thanks, enjoy your weekend
Unless there's something going on that I don't know about, he'll be back. Yes, the offense stunk in some of those losses, but remember: they've had only 5 losses.
how are you rich. thx for a great job for years already. one question about mark sanchez's arm strength. there are times he shows an absolute cannon, even in cold weather, like his game against chicago where he threw with tremendous velocity to all pats of the field, and there are times that he seems like a pennington clone, and its very confusing. just wondering what you think can explain it.
Thanks, Nick. Interesting question. In the Chicago game, he threw only 2 passes that traveled more than 20 yds in the air, and one was the INT that basically ended the game. I think he has above average, not great arm strength. I've heard the same things from scouts. He can make all the throws. Is he Cutler? No way. But I think he has a better arm than Pennington did pre-shoulder surgeries.
Rich, True or false. A Jets win on Sunday would be the biggest win for this franchise since Super Bowl 3?
I say true. Today, Rex said it was the second biggest game in franchise history.
Do you see the JETS running the ball effectively this weekend?
Yes, I do. The Patriots have some injuries in the front seven, with Wright and Brace on IR. Spikes is coming back from a 4-game suspension. In the 45-3 game, the Jets ran very well before it got out of hand.
Hey Rich,My two keys to the game are this: Score early and score TD's when we get into the redzone. While teams did win last week with a negative turnover ratio (Jets), every team that advanced had higher redzone efficiency than their opponent in each respective game. I was at last disaster at Foxboro and will be there again this weekend. There were a TON of Jets fans there last game. If they score early (i.e. first) not only will it silence their fans as they start to get nervous, but they will definitely hear the Jets fans, which could provide some much needed momentum.
The Jets have gone 13 straight games without a first quarter TD by the offense. I'd say now would be a good time to break the streak. Fall behind to the Patriots, and you're toast. The Jets can't let NE dictate the tempo, the Jets have to play it on their terms -- ball control, milk the clock, field positon.
Rich, agree or disagree: Yes, Cromartie is an overrated, loudmouth BUT us Jets fans would much rather see Brady trying to attack him instead of Coleman/Wilson/Smith/Pool.
Cromartie has had an interesting year. Let me explain: His "Burn" pct is 5th in the league (completions/times targeted). Btw, Revis is 1st. But on the other hands, Cro has allowed 7 TD passes, most on the team. Take my word for it: Brady will attack Cro and everybody not named Revis. The book is out on Cro: Struggles against the slants and in-breaking routes.
Any update on Coleman's Status?
Did not practice today. It'll be a game time decision, according to Ryan. Not good news for the Jets. Some early reports said he was fine, but those reports jumped the gun. This is an issue. You could see a committee of Wilson, Cole and Trufant at nickel..
Rich - what do you think the Jets should do with Revis this week? In my opinion, Jets D plays best when Revis is locked on one man (as opposed to playing a particular side). Just seems that there is less confusion in the secondary. Understanding that the Pats don't really have a true #1 receiver, you think it is worth having Revis man on a particular reveiver or should he play certain match-ups, packages etc...? Thanks.
The Jets' coaches feel Welker is their best receiver. Based on that premise, I'd say you will see Revis on (Footsie) Welker. That's how they did it in the last game in most man-to-man situations.
Hey, Jim, has the gift basket from Rex Ryan arrived yet?
I have never sensed the Jets to be as angry as they are this week. You have been around them for years. What is the vibe? Hell hath no fury like a ticked off Jet team on the road.
I mean, yeah, they're angry, but they try to play the angry card a lot. then again, it's not every week you get embarrassed 45-3. Emotion is great, and it helps, you it's going to make more than emotions to beat the Pats.
I know it's too early to say this but if Sanchez isn't the right qb for the team and the Jets cut him in a year or two. Would the Jets also get rid of Rex Ryan?
Andrew, Sanchez has more playoff victories than any QB in Jets history. Why on earth would you think about cutting him? Ditto, Ryan.
Hey Rich, Why does it always take the Jets a long time to get going on offense? I know we won last week, but they were shut out at halftime. With all the talent on offense, shouldn't Shotty be able to assemble an effective game plan for the first half. Thanks
Read my story on Braylon Edwards' comments about Schotty's game plans. He says they're too conservative early in the game.
Do you think the Jets have the Bump and run coverage to Play with the Patriots short passing game threat?
They do on the outside, assuming Crom decides to get physical and put his hands on receivers. The Jets will get exposed at ILB, S and nickel.
Welker owned the Jets during that interview yesterday and will own them again on Sunday.
Owned what, a pair of shoes?
Just looking forward a bit...is Nnandi potentially on the Jets' radar, or is that a pipe dream of pairing him with Revis?
Never would say never with the Jets, but you'd be paying roughly $23 m per year with Revis and Asomugha at 1 postion. Virtually prohibitive.
If given the chance does rex kickoff or receive this week?
He says he will defer. Says he's not afraid to play defense.
As successful as Brad Smith has been with the wildcat running the ball, why don't they take more chances letting him throw?
Did you see his last pass?
Hi Rich, Hope you are well. I know the playoffs are this weekend, but what do you think the chances are that the Jets draft front seven in April. With the exception of Harris and Pace, their front seven is getting up there in age. Thanks.
Thanks, Alan. Yes, I think that has to be the priority. I think they have five starters in front seven over 30 -- Pouha, Ellis, Scott, Thomas and Pace..Plus, there's Jenkins and Jason Taylor. They need young blood.
Is Brodney Pool the X-factor on defense? Did you see the tackles he was making against the Colts running game?
I'm glad you pointed that out, Anthony, because Pool didn't get enough credit for his game against Indy. Smith played well, too. They will be huge against the Pats because they will have coverage responsibilities against those TEs. Also, if the safeties are supporting the run well, they can get away with a light box on passing downs. They suckered Manning into checking to running plays because they had only 5 or 6 in the box, but they got away with it because the safties were coming down hard in run support.
Rich, you think Pettine is up to the task matching up his D with all of Belichick's substitutions... in-n-out of Hernandez, Gronk, Woodhead, etc. I think were better off with DBs on those guys rather than our LB's.
I see where you're coming from, but if you put all DBs on those guys, who's left to cover Welker, Branch and Tate?
Rich, thanks for your honesty as always. I was thinking the best way to slow the pats and their o down would be to have revis single branch the whole game and then just have everyone clog the middle since the pats passing game is mostly inside the numbers. Also if we dont allow the te's a free release it will throw off their timing. Thoughts?
Yeah, I agree with most of what you said. I don't think Cro can cover Branch. Cro is "long," not quick enough to cover him. Thing is, if you put Revis on Branch, who's on Welker? Then you have to double Welker.
Hey Rich, thanks for the good work!! I really hope the Jets win, but in my mind the game comes down to the Brian Shottenheimer on offense and Bill Belechik on defense. Belechick would win that matchup every time. What has Shotty shown over the years that inspires confidence in his abilities against Belichick's defense? Thanks
Two points, Brittany: The Jets are 2-2 with the Pats over the last 2 years, so they obviously can beat them with Schotty calling plays. Belichick doesn't call the plays on defense, so it's not a head-to-head matchup, per se, but I know where you're coming from. Schotty's No. 1 task is getting Sanchez off to a good start, making sure he gets rid of it quickly. The book on Sanchez: To make him throw INTs, keep him in the pocket and make him hold the ball.
Great reports Rich. It seems like Braylon's performance has exceeded Santonio's this year. Does the team view Braylon as the more valuable receiver at this point?
Personally, I think Braylon has had the best year of the WRs. As of a few weeks ago, the organization was leaning Holmes over Edwards. It's probably still the same way because of Holmes speed, but Edwards is making a strong push.
Who is the better offensive line....jets or pats?
I talked to a neutral GM the other day, and he said the Pats have the best OL left in the playoffs. GM told me Mankins is as important to the OLine as Brady is to their passing game. Hope that answers your question.
Will Vernon Gholston be dressed for this game or is gonna add to his legacy as a draft bust? Has he dont anything this year?
Gholston, is he still on the team?
Rich, great work as always. Wondering if you think we might see McKnight active for this game. Thought it was a bit strange that he wasn't active last week, but perhaps he could be a nice offensive weapon in this one, assuming they trust him for an occasional play. Also, seems like Marquice Cole may actually turn out to be better than Wilson. Thoughts on that/especially as to how it applies this week?
Thanks, Andrew. I was surprised McKnight wasn't active last week because he was starting to carve a niche on spl trms. His status this week could be determined by the Coleman injury. If the Jets need to dress an extra corner, it could impact on McKnight. He has the potetial to be good in space, split out as a receiver, but I'm not sure they feel he's ready yet.
Hi Rich- Do you think Mark's shoulder is worse than being reported. Some of his throws were very hi. Should we be concerned?
95% of the time, injuries are worse than reported, especially when it comes to QB injuries. I don't think the shoulder affected his accuracy issue. His footwork was a bit sloppy. Also, I think nerves had something to do with it.
Hey Rich, How concerned are the Jets that Damien Woody is out? Do they view Hunter as an adequate replacement? Also, what are the chances Woody returns to the Jets next yr? Have a good weekend.
The Jets are very confident in Hunter. He's an old pro, even if he's started only 3 games in his career. Woody's return is up in the air. He has 2 years left on his contract, makes about $3mil+ in 2011. Won't be healthy until June.
I think Rex needs to get his game plan for this week from his brother as the Browns seemed to confuse the heck out of the Patriots. What do you think they will look like in coverage thisweek?
I'm sure Rex has consulted with Rob this week. In the Cleveland-NE, Cleve used their "amoeba" defense, with 9 or 10 guys standing around before the snap. They really confused Brady with that.
Do you see the Jets trying to Man up Revis on Welker? I personally think he has some trouble with the underneath and stop routes(Comeback, hitch etc). I think we man him up on Branch and play man under with Coleman or Lowery on Welker... thoughts? Thanks Rich
Lowery can't cover Welker; not quick enough. Coleman can't cover him man-to-man, needs bracket help. Revis can handle him, and I suspect that will be his assignment.
Hi Rich. Any sense that Tannenbaum or Woody is tiring of all the Rex hoopla? I saw Kraft lobbed some veiled insults at the organization today.
As long as they're winning, Tanny and Woody will tolerate it.
Rich, the Patriots passing defense was suspect at times this season, do you think Sanchez is healthy enough to exploit them vertically, will Schotty even give him the chance?
I don't know if you can exploit them vertically. The Pats play a lot of Cover-2, limiting big plays. Sanchez needs to find Keller in the seams. When Keller has a big day against the Pats, the Jets win. Yes, the Pats passing D is suspect, gives up a lot of yardage, but they create turnovers and play well in the red zone. Classic bend but don't break.
hey Rich, nobody is talking about the jets 3-1 playoff record last two years the patriots lost their last 2 playoff games. i know the patriots are playing great and the game is in foxboro but i have a feeling the JETS are going to pull this one off. What will it take for the JETS to win. 150 rush yards, win the TO battle, and hold them under 24 points?
Don't think they have to win the TO battle; a draw would be a win for the Jets. Do yourself a favor, read the NE-GB boxscore. That's what the Jets are looking for -- 40 mins time of poss, kept the ball out of Brady's handles, disrupted him with aggressive man-to-man. The Jets are using the GB game plan as a model. GB would've won if they had Rodgers instead of Flynn at QB.
Hey Rich, been reading since your newsday days. while brad smith definitely makes some big plays, sometimes i feel like giving him wildcat snaps breaks up sanchez's rhythm. what are your thoughts? could his injury be a blessing in disguise?
Thanks, Ben. I didn't think anyone remembered the Newsday days. I don't know if I remember the Newsday days. I don't think the injury is a blessing because it could cost them one of the best KOR in the league. The Wildcat is good against certain teams. I don't think it'll be good against the Pats. They're too smart and will be prepared.
how can the jets cut down the slant routes?
Cromartie needs to jam his man and re-route him. If not, Brady will be doing a lot of pointing at the Jets' bench.
Hey Rich, thanks for taking my question. Do you think Shonn Greene will get the majority of carries against the Patriots? It seems as if Greene tends to tire out the opposing defense much more than when LT gets the carries. What does Greene have to do in order to get more carries? Thanks.
I think it'll be LT early, Greene late. if the Jets get a lead, you're going to see a heavy dose of Greene.
Rich, I read your blog every day, thanks for taking my question. If the Jets hold the Pats under 30 do the Jets win? What do you think the chances of the Jets defense holding them under 30 are?
I definitely could see the Jets' defense holding them under 30.
Well, that's it for me, folks. As you probably know from reading our web site, I picked NE, 24-20. I think the Jets will play a very good game. They're a team with a lot of heart and it wouldn't shock me at all if they win. I just think Brady is having an all-time great season and the Pats are a team that doesn't make many mistakes. I know this: I think this game will go down as an all-timer. Thanks for the questions, have a great day and enjoy Sunday. Rich.
