Wow. NASCAR season is almost here. Can't believe I'll be in Daytona next Thursday for testing. Lots to talk about. Like I said on Twitter, if you guys get me to 200 questions in an hour I'll go another 10 minutes. If you get to 300 I'll go another 30 minutes. Fire away.
hey man have u heard anything on brandon mcreynolds doin any races this year
I haven't. What are you hearing?
Afternoon, David! I have a real problem with the eligibility rules of the Bud Shootout. A once prestigious, hard-to-get-into event has now become a joke. Your thoughts?
I agree. They need to make this more exclusive, have driver actually earn their way into it. I can live with last year's Chase drivers and all that won a pole. Anybody else I don't think deserves it. Problem is sponsors and team owners get their way.
David, do you feel that with the new front end on the Cup cars (no more splitter braces), that Roush Fenway will be susceptible and fall behind again in their simulation data? Or did they learn their lesson last year?
Not at all. Everybody is on an even playing field from the front end side, and I believe the strides Roush made to improve over the final half of the year will pay off this season.
Hey David, just curious if you have high expectations for the new duo of Jeff Gordon and Alan Gustafson? Do you think Gordon's an instant title contender with AG at the helm?
Love the combination. I believe it'll put Jeff back in Victory Lane and make him a serious contender.
Do you think Mark Martin driving some nationwide races is really to help tutor Danica on the race track?
No. I believe he's laying the foundation for a team to drive for part-time or maybe even fulltime next season.
Do you see the 4th car at RCR this year helping or hurting the team? I know the team said in '09 when they had 4 cars, it wasn't because they didn't have the resources, they didn't have the equipment. I can't imagine the 4th team not having an affect. I would hate to see a repeat of 2009. Also, can you see JR in the 4th RCR car down the road, maybe after his contract expires in 2012? Thanks!
Paul Menard won't hurt the team and should help. RCR is much better prepared to handle four teams this time around. AS for Junior, Hendrick told me at the banquet they were looking at a long-term extension and he hopes NASCAR's favorite driver retires at HMS, so no I don't see that happening.
Hey David, KY Speedway tickets went on sale, are you excited!
I actually am looking forward to the first race there. Went for the announcement and love the area.
David, where is the best place to eat in Daytona?
Hmmm. Like the Chart House, there's a good sushi bar on the main drag between the speedway and the beach of which the name escapes my memory. Anybody else out there have suggestions? Wlll be spending more than two weeks there in the next month.
David, your finishing order of HMS drivers this year by last name....
Johnson, Gordon, Earnhardt, Martin....
What do you think about the new single championship rule of NASCAR? I am not too happy with it. Cup drivers need to be limited. But I would like to see or suggest that a Cup regular can drive a maximum of 24 races in Nationwide and a maximum of 15 races in Trucks. In that case those series will hold interest from sponsors. It will not be confusing as it is with this new rule. It seems like you need to be in your hand with the rulebook to know who can score points in that particular race and who not. And with my idea a Cup regular will not win a Nationwide or Truck championship. Just keep it simple, NASCAR!
As Kenny Wallace said on twitter, nothing's going to change much except Cup guys won't be eligible for the title. They'll still compete and w in races on that level, so the competition won't change that much.
COMMENT TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2,15 HI DAVID RAYGORDON REID BORN IN WAYCROSS GEORGIA JAN1/11 / 1955IVE BEEN A STOCK CAR FAM SINCE LATE 50;S OR EARLY6O;S LISTEN TO STOCK RACING ONRADIO WATCH ON TV SOUTHERN STOCK RACING TALLADEGA ATLANTA BRISTOL MARTINSVILLE RICHMOND OLD REBEL SOUTHERN 5O0 DARLINGTON
Old Rebel 500 was one of my favorites. First race I actually attended. Snuck in with with the scouts who got in free back then. Glad to hear such dedication still exists.
David, welcome back! It's even cold here in Central Florida. Anyways, I noticed that the new RPM owners want to get to 4 cars within like 3-4 years, any candidates in your mind for those rides? One of them I thought of was Bayne or Stenhouse.
Way too early to think about that. As Petty and Robbie Loomis told me the other day, they won't look at 3 until they get 2 competitive and financially stable. But RPM would be a good place for Roush to send young drivers, don't you think?
Do you think Jeff Gordon & the 24 team will be better off for moving out of the 24/48 shop this year?
Hey, Commish. Wife made some Reeces Peanut Butter Cupcakes that will challenge your bacon brownies. Glad to see you here. As for Gordon, I love combining him with Gustafson. Really believe you'll see that team excel. Plus like pairing him with Martin. Great combination all the way around.
Given how much damage Brian France has wreaked upon NASCAR, do you ever see him being elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame?
Like most U.S. Presidents we never know their true place in history until way down the road. So yes, I can see Brian making it.
This is part of an article that a reporter wrote from SI..........There was a lot of talk among the group, many of whom have known Stewart for decades, as to why 2010 went so badly for him. Not only were the results a disappointment (non-factor in the Chase, only two victories), but also off the track the moody Stewart was cantankerous with the press, more of a cranky old man than ever before while suddenly towing the politically correct NASCAR line in the face of "Boys, Have At It" methodology. "I think he's mad he's not a factor anymore, nor will he ever be," said one person in our group, referencing the oft-noted Stewart/Hendrick Motorsports connection. "That's got to eat at him more than people know......I think this is full of BS, but what's your thought ? Granted I think the days of Stewart winning 6-7 races are year are done, but to say he isn't a factor is just stupid in my opinion.
I don't totally agree with the argument presented here. I do believe Stewart's best years may be behind him. At the same time he's working hard to get in shape again and seems to be more serious about it than ever. He's still more talented than most of the field.
David what do you think if they gave 5 points or some benefit for qualifying fist in each points race and monetary award like 50,000.00 $ for most poles in one season. This would really make the qualifying interesting.
I woulidn't be opposed to that. They need to make qualifying relevant or just draw them from a hat.
Who will be the new crashing drinking game now that Sam is gone from the 77?
Funny. Why don't we pole the audience. Who do you guys vote for most likely to crash the most in 2011?
What is Ty Dillon up to this year?
Believe he'll be in some ARCA, Camping World East Series. Haven't heard a lot.
Am I going to be back spotting with Jeff Gordon again or did I get stuck with Jr?
You know, haven't given it much thought. The drivers swapped crews, but don't think the spotter is counted as an official crew member. So I'll guess you're with Gordon. You tell me.
With Martin doing racing for Turner this year can you see Mark driving for Turner full-time next year? It would not be too much of a strecth for Steve to start a cup team next year with Hendrick backing
You're thinking the way I am. Great minds.
Your thoughts on #24 resurgence chances with new team
As I said earlier, love the change. Watch out Gordon fans.
Favorite for Nationwide title this year?
I really like Elliott Sadler's chances. Impressed at the way he is re-inventing himself.
Is Brian Kes really going for ROTY? If so what a joke. I think Conway might have the edge on him.
I am guessing you are talking about Natiowide, where I suppose he coudl be a threat for ROTY.
Do you think, for Denny Hamlin to come so close and fail to win the title last season, will help him or hurt him in 2011?
Hurt him. I've said since the last race last year that Denny could take a step or two backwards this year. And look at the history of runner-ups lately. Not great.
So how bad will it look when the points that Kes or Carl get are tallied (I know they don't count but someone will keep track) and they beat the NW "Champ" By a few hundred points?
Does anybody really care? Do you guys really watch the NW races to see who will be the champion or because yuou like the racing? I am guessing the latter.
Hey Newt, What's the point of the best drivers/teams racing in NW if they are excluded from running for the championship?
What I said in the previous ansswer. Based on interest fans have shown in that series I conclude they love watching the race but not much beyond that.
Any rumors on the new nose performance wise ? Is it significant enough to cause teams to fall behind or advance ? Last year the wing to spoiler was supposed to be a wash in downforce but it did seem to be enough to cause teams to climb a few rungs or slip...
I don't see it making a huge difference. Hearing cars will be somewhat easier to drive, but overall it won't change who wins each week.
I just read some remarks from an interview of Brian V. He doesn't seem to be too enthusiastic about having a lame duck team mate .How do you think this will work out
I am guessing Brian will benefit more from having Kasey Kahne as a teammate than he would Scott Speed. Nothing against Speed, but Kahne offers experience that Scott can't.
Why should Gibbs, Penske and Roush enter cars in NW if NASCAR is telling them how to run their race teams?
Because they still collect a winner's paycheck and still can run for the owner's title.
With Martin doing some races for Turner this year can you see Mark driving for Turner full-time next year? It would not be too much of a strecth for Steve to start a cup team next year with Hendrick backing - maybe Martin and Allgier split the ride
Think I answered this already, but I definitely see that as a possibility.
Hi David, today older NASCAR fans seem to be so negative sorta like the political climate. Was it always like this where they complain about everything? thanks.
Hard to really judge because there wasn't the media intensity back then. There also wans't social media for fans to voice their opinions so much. I am guessing not much really has changed. Bet some fans hated seeing Petty dominate just as they hate seeing Jimmie.
Wait, bacon brownies? We must be led to the recipe.
Ask Commish24 on Twitter. Sure she'll be glad to help.
how well do u see joey logano and jgr doin this year
He's my darkhorse to make the biggest move this season. Loved his progress in the Chase and wouldn't be surprised if he gave teammate Denny Hamlin a run for his money within the company walls.
The other Penske driver, what's his name in the #2.
Brad Keselowski is in the 2 with Miller as the sponsor. Kurt Busch has moved into the 22 with Shell Penzzoil.
Do you think it will be best for the sport if we have another first time Daytona 500 winner like Jamie did in '09, like maybe Kurt or Rowdy?
What likely would be best for the sport would be if Junior won the Daytona 500 again. Don't you agree?
Do expect to see Matt Kenseth winning races again this year?
I do, although in my preseason pole I didn't have him making the Chase. At least with 12 drivers. If they expand to 15 he's in.
Here's a thought on how to fix the Cup guys in Nationwide--Let them run as many races, accumulate points, etc. But they have to do it in their own cars and with their own teams....what do you think?
Don't see that as an answer to be honest. Sorry.
Do you think Kenseth has a team around him now that he's comfortable with, so he can turn his complete focus to driving for a second Cup?
Talked to him at the banquet and he's really happy with how things are now, but I don't think he hasn't be completely focused the past few years.
Hi Dave, hope you had a good Christmas. Great to have you back on the chat. Did your son get his SUV fixed after his little mishap? Loved the picture of Ernie wearing his winter hat!
SUV fixed well enough to drive, but still needs cosmetic work. Wife made Ernie wear the silly hat and we did get a lot of strange looks walking in the snow. Glad to be back and thanks for being here.
Did J J inherit the Jeff G pit crew that bailed him out at the end of last season or will they rightfully revert back to the 24?
He did inherit that crew, although there could be a tweak or two. At least half of the old 48 crew I am told has moved on.
He did inherit that crew, although there could be a tweak or two. At least half of the old 48 crew I am told has moved on.
Let's say Edwards scores the most NW points and Rowdy wins 10 races but Algaier with 1 win is crowned #1, NW Champion. Do Rowdy, JD, Coach, Carl and Roush have to show up at the awards banquet?
The team that wins the owner's points would show up. Really, folks. I don't see this as a bad thing.
No. Jayski says Cup: Brian Keselowski plans to run for Rookie of the Year: been told that #92-Brian Keselowski and his team are working on cars to run Sprint Cup for 2011 that Keselowski plans to run for Rookie of the Year. The team has recently acquired three Penske Dodges to go along with their current fleet of former Gillette/Evernham cars.(1-12-2011)
I did hear that now that you refreshed my memory. Perhaps my brain was baked from too much sun in Aruba.
When do you think Jr Motorsports going to announced the rest of Danica nationwide series 2011 schedule?
Would suspect in the next week or so. Really shouldn't be many surprises and the first part of the schedule already has been released.
Gonna be tough to get to 200 questions at this rate. Only 53 in and 22 minutes to go. Get with it guys.
Who do you think Scott Speed will be driving for this year and would Red Bull want him back after Kahne leaves?
Not sure on the first part. He is talking to various people about partial Nationwide and Truck rides. AS for the second part, I believe the Red Bull bridge has been burned.
We need more Jr questions. Sorry i didnt get here in time to ask my 88 questions.
There's still time. I can answer as many as you throw at me.
how do u think danica will do this year
About the same as last year, honestly.
People talk of Allgaier and Bayne often. How do you see Brian Scott doing in his first year at JGR?
Great equipment, so it will be hard to fail.
Hi David, if Stevie could only win 1 race with Jeff Gordon in the last 3 years what makes him think he will do better with Dale?
Chemistry is a strange bird and you never know what will work. Perhaps they'll hit on something that he and Jeff didn't. And it wasn't like Gordon was horrible. He should have won a handful of races.
Favorite for the Truck series title?
Tough one. look no further than KHI though.
So kyle can run in his own truck collect the prize money and owner point, and still win the owners title but not acquire drivers points correct?
That is what I am led to believe.
What sort of track is Kentucky and what will the racing be like?
A mile and a half much like Charlotte, although if you go by the Nationwide races and how competitive they were I'd say you're in for a treat.
What are TRD and Joe Gibbs Racing doing in the off season to close the horsepower advantage that Chevy and ECR engines have?
Horse power isn't JGR's main concern. Getting better fuel mileage is. They were plenty fast enough last season.
What do you think is distracting Matt Kenseth? His son's racing career? I tend to think he'll make the top 12 in the chase without a problem.
Don't think anything is distracting him. He just hasn't had everything work the way it did a few years ago, although he looked pretty good at times during the Chase. And I may be wrong about predicting him not to make the top 12. Wouldn't be the first time.
who is ur pick for the championship this year
I'd be crazy to pick against Jimmie Johnson, but I'm going with Kyle Busch. It is time.
Since NASCAR owned-Grand AM-reinstated JD France after getting busted with crack cocaine do you see NASCAR reinstating Jermey Mayfield?
Nope. Not unless Mayfield goes through the rehab program and begs forgiveness.
how do u see trevor bayne doing in cup
He's a year or two from being competitive.
How do you see Lance and Mark doing? I am a Mark fan and just don't see this as being a good last year. I hope I am wrong.
Mark doesn't need much help on the radio, and Lance is a solid engineer type, so there's no reason to think they can't succeed.
Do you talk to many drivers during the off-season?
As few as possible through the first of the year. Need some space to re-energize. But from here on out I'll talk to as many as I can. I'd say a majority before the season starts.
So have seen Travis Kvapil to RMM,heard anything about Skinner
Nothing yet. Still early though.
Anyone ever find out what happened to Townley?
Read somewhere he's still under contract with RCR, but that may just be a technicality.
do u think j logano will as good in the cup car at kentucky as he is in the nationwide car
NW success doesn't always translate to the Cup side, but I'd say his familiarity with the track will be an edge. Just don't know how much of one.
What are your thoughts on how the Stewart-Haas team will be this year?
About what it was last season, although I expect Newman to be back in serious Chase contention.
Do you see cup owners replacing the expensive, older drivers like Burton, Biff, Kenseth with younger, cheaper drivers sort of like how RPM did with Sadler?
Not really. But I do see contracts shrinking for all drivers.
Who goes to cup first? KHI, KBM, JR Motorsports
JR Motorsports, if Danica is part of the deal, that is.
Give us a Sam Hornish Jr and Robby Gordon update, rumors have them going back to INDYCAR , Also heard Jimmie Johnson just needs approval from Lowe's and his wife to run the Indy 500. Whats your take on all this?
Hornish has made it clear he wants to stay in NASCAR, even if it's at the Nationwide level. I can see Robby in IndyCar at least part-time. As for JJ, there is interest there. Just not sure how serious at the moment. I believe it would be great for both series if it happened.
The Nationwide Series is a farce. There is no thrill watching elite teams with Cup drivers dominate.I think if they eliminated them altogether that it would revert back to the days when the likes of Randy La Joie, Johnny Benson and even Jr. when he was on the way up were the key players. Teams that don't enter now because of the inability to compete would come in to fill the void left by the " candy from the baby" grabbers. In the past it was a good step up for ARCA and other series to take part in.What is your take
I somewhat agree, but also hear from fans who say they won't watch without the Cup drivers participating.
After the Daytona 500, how many cars do you see missing Cup races (not qualifying) and do you see the Cup races being smaller than 43 this year?
If you're asking if I see a race or more where there'll be fewer than 43 cars, no. Teams will step up and enter just to collect the last-place money.
Do you expect all the regular cup guys like Dale, Stewart, Newman, Harvick, Biff, Kenseth, Carl, Menard, Boyer, Burton, Rowdy, Martin etc. to run the Daytona NW race?
See no reason why they wouldn't since they always do. They don't do it for the points. They do it because they love it and because sponsors are willing to pay for them to be there.
Do you see a NASCAR/INDYCAR war brewing with the new leadership from Randy Bernard at INDYCAR?
Not really, although they are doing things in IndyCar that are encouraging.
Do you exspect nascar will address the number of S$P this year,or will it go under the rug once more
They could but probably won't. NASCAR doesn't see this as a real problem and I don't either. Unless the start and parkers are taking out legitimate teams it's no big deal.
With Indy going to new 2.2 engines and new manufacturers in '12 do you really believe Danica would quit that to be a middle of the pack Sprint cup driver?
Oh, I believe she made up her mind to go fulltime in Cup by 2012 when she signed with JR Motorsports.
whit great late runs stedhouse had duse he stay up there and may be the nation champion chip
I'm going with Sadler.
Any chance Shelby Howard gets a shot in any CUP races this year, I am big fan of his in the Nationwide Series, just think he needs better equipment
No rumors to that effect as of now.
do u think j logano will b with gibbs for a long time
I do. They invested heavily in him and there's no reason to let him get away.
What happens to the 24/5 shop when KK pulls in? Will they rip the 5 team up to better accommodate the new guy, or let the hopefully great chemistry grow? Also, what happens to Martin or Kahne if either wins the championship?
You'll probably see Kenny Francis and some of his team at Red Bull come over to Hendrick.
Is it true that Bill France Jr. never really wanted the truck series and he only started it because Chevy, Ford and Dodge twisted his arm? Do you think trucks has a future in NASCAR?
That hss been rumored, but I don't have fact to back it up. As for the future, I love the truck races and wouldn't be hurt if it were just Cup and Trucks.
Thanks for being here David! Can you give info/comments on Stavola Labonte Racing, ART and TRG, please?
Not a lot of information to give. You'll see them compete but not at a level that will make them significant.
What do you think keeps Jr. from being more successful on the track?
Will or when will IOWA get a cup race? IOWA is e85 country, that makes sense doesn't it?
I would hope in the next five years NASCAR will make room for it. Drivers love it and it would be a different part of the country to expand to.
Whats the best and worst part of your job covering NASCAR?
Best is the stories and getting to chat with you guys. The worst is being away from home on the weekends.
What happened to that "americas team" that was anounced last July at Daytona?
Guess America made its choice and decided to watch American Idol instead.
Over/Under for the number of wrecks at the Daytona 500 this year
What is it about him though (Junior)? Too much partying?
No, just not the confidence in himself to get the job done.
Are you saying the @24 pit crew won't be with the #88 this year? I thought the teams were to stay the same.
The crew that Gordon left behind goes to Junior, but most of those guys which were with the 48 have moved to other teams.
Best Media Center you've ever been at? Worst ?
In NASCAR? I'll go with Indy or Texas for best. Worst? Old Martinsville or Phoenix.
any word on scott speed
Not yet. Staying in communication with him though.
Well, that's it for me. If there were more questions I'd love to hang around. Instead, I'll gear up for movie night. Anybody seen the King's Speech? Got to be prepared for Sunday night Award's show, so heading out for research soon. See you next week.
