Chat with Nick Friedell

Nick Friedell
  (1:01 PM)

What's going on, everybody? I'm coming at you live from the Berto Center. Let's get this chat rolling ...

Lawrence (Toronto)

How likely will Melo be wearing a Bulls jersey? This year? Next? Ever?

Nick Friedell
  (1:03 PM)

Let's answer the Melo question right off the bat. Nothing has changed as far as the Bulls are concerned. They aren't giving up Noah. Period. If the Nuggets want to take Deng, then the Bulls would be willing to give them pretty much anyone else not named Derrick Rose. But the Nuggets don't want Deng's deal (3 years, $40 mil left on it). So to answer your question -- No, I don't Melo is coming here any time soon.

Robert (Arlington Heights)

How's this for a quick fix at SG? Acquire T.J. Ford from Indiana, make him your backup PG, and move C.J. Watson to starting SG, until the Bulls could acquire a more explosive SG. C.J. might be small, but his D has been solid and he can score.

Nick Friedell
  (1:07 PM)

Thibs likes having Watson come off the bench, but he is starting to use him more with Rose during games. Still, what are you going to give up to get Ford? Why do you want Ford anyway?

Richard Light (Sheldon, IL)

Please tell me we're looking for a 2G.

Nick Friedell
  (1:07 PM)

Of course. But the Bulls don't have all that much to get one that will make a profound difference this season.

Brittany (Kenosha)

unofficial president of the BIG SEXY fan club here!! just wondering why you don't give more big sexy quotes or interviews??? he looks and seems like he would be really funny to talk to

Nick Friedell
  (1:09 PM)

The Kurt Thomas stories are on the way, Brittany. Be patient. I will say this though, Thomas has played great for the Bulls in place of Noah. He's also been great in the locker room. That was a really smart signing by GarPax.

Julian (Streator IL)

2011 MVP Derrick Rose Fact or Fallacy?

Nick Friedell
  (1:10 PM)

I still think a veteran will edge him out at the end. But if I had to vote for the award right now -- Derrick Rose is my MVP.

bob (woodridge)

Nick, what seed do you see the bulls getting? win total? i am thinking 3 seed and 54 wins

Nick Friedell
  (1:10 PM)

Sounds about right to me.

Joe (Chicago)

What are you hearing on Boozer's return?

Nick Friedell
  (1:12 PM)

He actually walked out of the United Center under his own power last night which is a positive considering he was driven out on a golf cart Tuesday night. He might play tomorrow, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Bulls held him out for a couple more days. What's the rush? They've pretty much already locked up the Central Division.

Luke S (Chicago)

Do you think the bulls are able to win a championship, once healthy?

Nick Friedell
  (1:13 PM)

Not this year. But with another couple pieces they will be a title contender for the next few years.

Andrew (Chicago, IL)

Why not Taj and Charlotte's 1st round pick for OJ Mayo?

Nick Friedell
  (1:14 PM)

Not enough. Why do you do that deal if you're Memphis. That Pau Gasol deal a few years ago was awful -- I find it hard to believe they'll do something that stupid again. But ... it is Memphis, so we'll see.

Kevin (Chicago)

As ugly as the Bulls have been playing, should we look at this as a positive that they can win these games or a negative that they are playing ugly?

Nick Friedell
  (1:16 PM)

A major positive. Without Boozer and Noah, the Bulls should be happy with any win the get. If you had asked me this question a few weeks ago, I would have told you to worry -- but not now. The Bulls should take pride in the fact that they can win games without two of their starters.

b mc (chicago)

why don't the bulls play James Johnson more? Especially with the injuries and lack of scoring from Keith bogans.

Nick Friedell
  (1:17 PM)

Ah, the James Johnson question. Bottom line: Thibs doesn't trust Johnson on the floor. If he did, he would play him more.

Adam (Chicago)

What will it take for Asik to stop head faking when no one is within ten feet of him? Lisa Leslie attacks the hoop harder.

Nick Friedell
  (1:18 PM)

Time. Asik is still learning the NBA game. Once the Bulls put him in the weight room and get him to work more over the summer on his post moves, I think he'll be OK.

Chris (Chicago)

Realistically will Noah be ready before the trade deadline

Nick Friedell
  (1:18 PM)

Very doubtful. He wants to come back for that Miami game after the break, but I think that is even a little too soon.

Brian (Chicago)

Rose seems to get fouled a lot, and complains very little. Can someone tell him to speak up so he can start getting some calls. I know it's not really his style but...

Nick Friedell
  (1:19 PM)

He's actually been complaining a lot more recently. I think it's one of the reasons he's been getting a few more calls over the last week.

Michael (Merchandise Mart)

With the MVP race pretty "close" (to not sound bias), do these couple of wins with Derrick's main back-up (Noah and Booz) out, solidify why Derrick should be the MVP because of how important he is to this team?

Nick Friedell
  (1:20 PM)

No question. Every other team usually has somebody else to pick up the scoring burden. As Jason Terry said last night: "Derrick Rose is their team." Without Noah and Boozer, he is the only one who can get his own shot up right now.

Mike (Riverside, IL)

Why is it that the Bulls always play like a championship contender against the good teams, but play bad against lousy teams?

Nick Friedell
  (1:22 PM)

Mike, I've been pondering this question for months and I still can't figure it out. I think they just get more excited to play the good teams because they want to prove than they are better than people expect.

John (Hobart,IN)

I here people saying Korvers defense is lacking, but compared to Boggins I really do not see much difference. There for I would like to see Korver get the nod to start a few games. Since he is a much larger scoring threat. What do you think?

Nick Friedell
  (1:22 PM)

Despite all the criticism, Bogans is still a much better defender than Korver is.

Jon V (Naptown)

Derrick hasn't shot lights out in awhile. Is he wearing down?

Nick Friedell
  (1:24 PM)

It's the Bulls biggest concern right now. He and Luol Deng are playing A LOT of minutes. I think both players are OK right now, but the minutes totals are definitely something to keep an eye on. You can't get much rest during the middle of the season.

Nick (Chicago)

your report card was so bogus, how could you possibly give thibodeau a B? they've been without boozer and noah for long periods of time but he has them 3rd in the east 29-14, lost hinrich for nothing, a turkish rookie center and a hobbled taj gibson and old man river kurt thomas -- were expecting them to be better than miami or boston this season?? please explain

Nick Friedell
  (1:26 PM)

Nick, Did you not read what I wrote? I think Thibs has done a very good job. He's changed the culture of the entire team and all the players trust him. They buy into everything he tells them. The only reason for the B was because he has made some curious decisions throughout the course of the year that I'm not sure a veteran coach would have made. Like I said though, all in all he's done a good job, especially given all the injuries the Bulls have dealt with. What grade did you want to give him?

nathan N (Michigan City, Indiana)

Will Joakim Noah come to my birthday party? Whatever day he wants, ill legally change my birthday for that. D-rose can come also

Nick Friedell
  (1:27 PM)

It may be tough to get those two to go anywhere. But, hey, Benny the Bull is always available. He loves to party.

Mark (Chicago)

Are the bulls interested at all in Rip Hamilton? He seems unhappy and disinterested in Detroit and he's a very solid 2 guard that could definitely help the bulls immediately.

Nick Friedell
  (1:28 PM)

They're interested in Hamilton. They're not interested in his contract.

Jay (Chicago)

Is Boozer going to be a guy that plays 55 games a year? If so, is he worth $80 million? It's not like he can just magically stop breaking down when the playoffs roll around.

Nick Friedell
  (1:29 PM)

The Bulls knew when they signed him that he was injury prone. Nothing that has happened in the past few months has changed that perception.

Adam (Chicago)

Korver shot lights out last season and couldn't hit squat the year before. Are we going to get the squat version? He seems to streak / slump for an entire season at a time.

Nick Friedell
  (1:30 PM)

He's a streaky shooter. Like Boozer, the Bulls knew that when they signed him. You have to deal with the highs and lows when it comes to Korver's shooting.

Ralph (Aurora)

Can the Bulls afford to sign Melo this off season?

Nick Friedell
  (1:31 PM)

Nope.

joe (south bend)

i know you've said hinrich comes back when his contract is up. any chance he comes back sooner?

Nick Friedell
  (1:32 PM)

Nope, there's too much money left on his deal.

Tim (Oak Park)

Is Rose the best PG in league? i love hearing Barkley back him up and recognize his play, but honestly, doesn't he need to take the bulls past the 1st round to get into that discussion?

Nick Friedell
  (1:33 PM)

This season, I think he is. He does more for his team than any other player does for their own. With a healthy Noah and Boozer, I don't see how the Bulls don't get out of the first round.

Michael Angelo (Illlionis)

Would d-rose have any say on whether the bulls keep that charlotte pick or trade it for a shooting guard?

Nick Friedell
  (1:36 PM)

I think D. Rose has a say on pretty much everything he wants in the organization at this point. He is the present and the future.

Jonathan (Calumet Heights)

Nick, where do you shop to get your awesome blazers? I'd like one please.

Nick Friedell
  (1:37 PM)

All over. Go to twitter. @friedellsblazer is my personal consultant. He can answer the questions better than I can.

dan (nyc)

are you implying that noah and rose don't get along with one another?

Nick Friedell
  (1:38 PM)

Not at all. They are very close friends. Why do you think that?

SteveFitz (Chicago, IL)

Circling back to Deng really quick. Is his contract really that bad? I mean, I kow it's not great, but 3 for 40 and what he offers when healthy isn't that bad is it? I mean, I can understand why Denver doesn't want it, but it doesn't look as bad as people make it seem.

Nick Friedell
  (1:41 PM)

It's bad in this regard -- it's over his market value. You pay $13 mil a year for major difference makers. Deng is very good, and has had a great year, but I wouldn't consider him a major difference maker. He's a small forward who is solid in many areas, who would probably be worth $8-10 mil on the open market. If that were his deal, I think people would feel a lot better about it. It would also be a lot easier to move.

Jim (Akron)

Any chance of James Johnson for Anthony Parker? Seems fair to both sides.

Nick Friedell
  (1:41 PM)

How is that fair for the Cavs?

John (California)

The Bulls should not be satisfied with winning their division. Getting the 2 seed vs the 3 is the difference between playing a 22-19 Knicks team, and a 17-24 Charlotte team.

Nick Friedell
  (1:42 PM)

That's why Thibs continues to play Deng and Rose 40+ minutes every single night.

Nick Friedell
  (1:43 PM)

Got to go talk to the players, everybody. See ya next week.
