Chat with Jesse Rogers

Jesse Rogers
  (1:03 PM)

Hey all. Welcome to our weekly hawks chat. usually Im at the united center for these but a real light week has the hawks off today..they were off monday as well...dont play until sat. they will practice thur and friday before the big weekend..they're in 8th right now...3 pts ahead but it could have been much worse so either way by this weekend they should be in OK shape...I say ok, not great...still waiting for that run...though they have played well...need 5-6 in a row to feel real good...fire away!

Josh Mack (Libertyville, IL)

Jesse, any possible upgrades the Hawks make via trade will likely involve current roster players because of how tight they are up against the cap. Who do you see as possible trade bait, and what do you see the Hawks trying to upgrade at the deadline?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:06 PM)

Kind of referenced this last week and in a blog about Ben Eager as well..I dont think there is a doubt their current 4th line wingers would be bait, more likely skille than stalberg but you never know...the reason they wanted eager is because they miss that grinder, forechecker on that 4th line...so think that direction..they"ll get one...Jarkko ruutu?? guy like that..defense as well..just a matter of how good can they get...think they will come up short in getting a decent center but they will look..def 4th line..they wanted eager or at least were looking

Chris (Lockport)

With only one less game played than the Hawks the Red Wings are only 8 points ahead. This is not that much! With the injuries the Wings have had do the Hawks catch them?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:07 PM)

They havent proven to have a run in them..8 points is more than it seems but sure its possible..without a doubt..just not probable but I bet they close the gap with those injuries you referenced

Jason (Columbus OH)

Which goal tender plays against whom in the back to back games this weekend? I am interested in who matches up best with whom?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:10 PM)

Working backwards I would def start Crawford against Philly...good forwards in off. zone, I could see Philly put up a lot of shots, and be in hawks zone a lot, especially in tight, thats Crawford's specialty...as for sat. tough call...I would just go with crow both days but he might go turco then crow...

Chris (Chicago)

Did you play poker last night? Which Hawk lasted the longest?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:10 PM)

Did not play...Troy Brouwer lasted the longest

Brent (Lombard)

Were the Hawks originally scheduled to play at 1130 on Sunday or did the Bears game get that pushed up a little?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:11 PM)

They were at 3 pm...but well before the bears were scheduled NBC took that game and made it 11:30...Im sure NBC didnt want to conflict with and NFL so early start time but this was done weeks ago

Eric D. (Orland Park)

Why does the media get away with making up trade rumors? Pressure from above? Need for pageviews? Obviously hawks interest in Eager was imagined. If a fifth-round pick would get it done, it would have been done.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:14 PM)

You think I made that up? How many blogs have I posted with trade rumors over past yr. A couple? Maybe Atl. didnt want to take back money? Maybe the hawks were offering a 5th as well but dudley didnt want to help his old team...maybe wilson promised something else...there are a ton of scenarios we dont know about...maybe the hawks backed off...My guess has to do with the hawks wanting to give someone like skille but asking for more than eager in return...anyway, wasnt made up...100% true...Mtl, SJ, Chi, L.A. were all looking at eager...I dont post B.S. Maybe others do..ok, im done

Paul (NJ)

Jesse, watching Leddy play has got me wondering about the quality of the Hawks prospects. Do you think the Hawks have any true impact guys in the system that could be key parts of the team next year and the following?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:15 PM)

Sure I do, but I say that having seen few games down there this season..beach could get there...My fav guy is the one that just turned pro, Dylan Olsen...and Ive been telling you about a swedish player Marcu Kruger, who should be here next yr as 3rd line center...and of course morin and leddy...

cheryl (Lombard)

jesse.Kaner said the other day that this Team has "the same feel as last years (Stanley Cup winning) team". The Hawks have played fairly consistent this last little stretch but, having been in the locker room beofre & after games, do you sense that same sentiment?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:17 PM)

Not quite but I wonder if he meant they were getting their confidence back to that level...It does seem like when they REALLY want to turn it on, they can still do it...I guess its starting to feel better in that regard but not there yet

Eric (Dekalb)

What are the chance that Seabrook won't be with the Hawks at the end of the season? And what are the Hawks looking to get in return for him if they are puting him on the trading block?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:19 PM)

I dont believe he is on the trade block...He will be here through the season...At worst, you ask around just to gaguge value and maybe play a little game with his agent..hes not going anywhere--at least not mid-yr. dont believe that B.S. I do leave open that possibility that anything can heppen cause it can but for all practical purposes--NO WAY

Josh M. (Cary, IL)

Did the Hawks send Nick Leddy down to Rockford just to give him some playing time while the Hawks have an extended break...or is it a more permanent move? Leddy and Hendry have looked decent together, although there have been a few times where they have had trouble getting out of their own zone. Beats the Boynton/Cullimore alternative though.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:20 PM)

They like Leddy/Hendry alot. They save money this way on the salary cap...right now hes off the books..nothing to do with playing time..in fact the kid could use a rest..went right from World Juniors to hawks...

Mike (Chicago)

Jesse, it seems to me as if the sharks are out to get us! First with the hjalmarsson offer sheet that we had to match, personally i think were over paying for him. Then signing niemi. Now I heard reports that the hawks were looking at eager to fill in their checking void and the sharks go and sign him. Coincidence or are they out to get us?!

Jesse Rogers
  (1:22 PM)

I dont think Wilson would be so focused on hawks considering his job is prob on the line with that underachieving team...there is that inside hockey talk that he doesnt mind messing with them due to his allegiance and closeness with dale tallon but that might just be a bonus if true..anyway, his team comes 1-2-3 in terms of priorities im sure

Mike S. (Aurora)

Are you friends with the players?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:25 PM)

Depends what you mean by "friends". Id say friendly more than friends..known the sharp/seabs/keith combo since they've been here...I would say I was friends with Buff but mostly cause we did a radio show and he acts the least like a multi-millionaire athlete than just about anyone Ive come across...anyway, not suppsed to be too tight with players anyway, hard to write objectively, etc. but have had beverage on occasion..just dont double date or anything

Adam (Chicago)

What determines when Olczyk has Verus duty? It seems like he pops up at random times.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:26 PM)

Pretty much he determines it around hawks schedule im guessing..prob contracted to do a certain amount of in-studio and games and then they fig it out

Steve (St. Louis)

Stalberg has had a bunch of tough breaks this year. How has his attitude been recently?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:27 PM)

Actually, pretty good. Im liking him more and more as a guy..told me he would buy hossa a b-day gift with a percentage of his salary if hossa did the same percentage with his salary..thought that was funny..they both had b-days in past week...anyway, he needs to play with an edge along with his skill in my opinion..not that diff that skille really

SalukiNation (Dirty 'Dale)

Hey Jesse, I was wondering why Kane has been so unproductive since returning from his ankle injury. I was at the game Sunday and he seemed pretty stagnant on offense: Not picking up passes or moving away from defenders. Is he still injured or are the matchups just getting to a tired body?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:29 PM)

I dont know about that...you can tell in the last 3 or 4 games he's picked it up and the ankle has been less of a problem..in the first few games back he was pretty un-noticeable...but hes had a few spin o ramas, etc. lately and hes looked good. cant rememeber sunday in particualr but overall hes been decent...points are still coming so hard to complain too much

Janice (Naperville)

Who do you think gets re-signed first - Seabrook or Brouwer?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:30 PM)

Probably Seabrook...only cause I see no chance of brouwer mid-season, where seabrook-for all we know-could be any day or not..just dont know..but i dont even see talking to brouwer until offseaosn--if they keep him

Steve (St. Louis)

Would you have given a fifth rounder to get Eager back?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:31 PM)

Absolutely..but like I wrote, Im sure there was more going on there...or atl just chose SJ cause they felt like it so I dont think it came down to just that..Im sure if they wanted him which i believe they did...a 5ht rounder would not be a prob

Steve (St. Louis)

Now that the season is over the halfway point and the players know each other better, has anyone taken up the Burish role in the locker room?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:32 PM)

Skille is as close as you'll get but as a rookie he holds back i think...no one is burish

Jesse Rogers
  (1:33 PM)

BTW, Iginla just withdrew from all-star..briere is in..family reasons for iginla

Janice (Naperville)

Did you get to talk with Kopy since the last game? How is his nose? And btw have you re-scheduled the Jesse and Kopy show? It was supposed to be today and you haven't been talking it up.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:35 PM)

Yeah, I think the hype for a football game got in way or something for today so its off...I believe valentines day is our next show...insert joke...plenty of time to promote..saw him right after the game..several stitches and he said it hurt..looks pretty bad but he said no issues

Ryan (Barrie, ON)

Numbers aside, Brian Campbell hawks no 1 defenceman yes or no? would it be wise for the hawks maybe in the summer to do a sign and trade with Seabrook and maybe bring some guys up threw the system i think hes had a poor year as far as terrible turn overs and bad decisions go? and if Kopy continues on the pace he's at could he price himself out of chicago or will he maybe take a hometown discount to stay with hoss?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:37 PM)

Pretty good questions all around..until Soupy is going against joe thorton and zetterbeg and these guys hard to call him #1 but I will say he is playing the best hockey of all d-men right now..about 3 weeks ago he decided to actually skate with the puck again and it is paying dividends...like it did on sunday with an assist but even when it doesnt lead to a point it is leading to puck posession...I dont know if kopy is breaking the bank with his yr and yes i could see him taking a fair--but not dirt cheap-- amount to stay...

Craig nigrelli (Omaha, ne)

Jesse, I love the hawks top 4 on d and despite leddy and henry finding some chemistry, I think the hawks will need a playoff tested number 5 d man if they are going to knock out one of the favorites come playoff time. Do you think the hawks will make a deal for a d man?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:39 PM)

Yes, but it might just be a 6 or 7 guy...dont think boynton will be only or the extra guy..maybe they get a 5..but right now no issues iwth leddy play so lets see how he is till deadline

Mark (Lockport)

Jesse, I know that it is sometimes a very simple answer, that other guys were just on the ice, but does Q view Bolland as his top PK guy? It seems like he is always the first pair out and for some reason he is taking that face off in our own zone which we don't win much...Thoughts?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:40 PM)

Yeah, no, its mostly about who of the PK guys is rested and ready...not sure about first faceoff thing...Im sure hossa and toews are ahead of him as a PK guy but they play so much maybe he goes to boly first?/ not sure, havent thoguht a lot about it...terrbile in faceoff so need to avoid def zone draws

Stacy (Chicago)

Regarding goalie choice in back to back games this weekend, you mentioned Crawford would be best for Sunday. Wouldn't a Division opponent be more important? Especially since Turco does not have a great record against Detroit throughout his career. I would like to see Crawford back to back, but I'm biased because I'm not a Turco fan.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:41 PM)

I would agree..Im just thinking of styles..I guess yes on the confernce/division opponent thing but its not like they will be fighting det. for the 8 seed like they could with L.A., etc. so I dont find that a big deal..anyway, Crow in both, we agree

Liz (River North)

Why do the hawks have bunches of player appearances with (that OTHER sports station) but only a couple with you, a beat writer? Wouldn't it be better to have the players talking hockey with a guy whose around the team all the time?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:44 PM)

Write the bosses...there are so many things that go into..sales, etc. I dont think they are doing live shows..we are, or were supposed to..anyway, we also have many less local hours of programming so like i said a lot goes into it but feb. 14 is pretty locked in for Kopy and I live on espn 1000 but not kidding tell the powers at be you want more hockey! (Just dont do it this week, bad timing)

Jay (Chicago)

Since last season, Sharp seems to miss a lot of open nets. Does he ever talk about it? Is it in his head now?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:46 PM)

He talks about it but hes mature enough to know getting the chances is the key..hes not crosby, he'll miss a few but hes darn good and getting to that spot that will get him the open net in the first place so its a matter of pct..the more looks he gets, the more they will go in..hard to argue with his production..

Emily (Nashville )

There is just something about Jonathan Toews, on and off the ice. I know you say you can really only be friendly with them, so what is your take on him as a person, not just from a media standpoint?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:48 PM)

Hes a nice enough guy but very guarded as you would expect...I dont blame him..hes expected to be squeaky clean and to make sure he isnt represented another way--or I guess I should say mis-represented--he has to be on guard...I wish he'd relax once in a while a little more but I guess just when you do, someone tries to take you down...anyway, good kid

Rick (Chicago)

On the Olczyk note, is there any indication that he'll committ full time to JUST the Hawks or JUST vs, or will he continue to juggle?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:50 PM)

Juggle. Hes a wanted man

JMH (Columbus)

It is too bad that the Flyers/Blackhawks game had to happen on NFC Championship Sunday with the game in Chicago. A great Finals rematch with a team in Philadelphia who reminds me a lot of the Blackhawks from last year. Ridiculously deep with 4 forward lines and 3 defensive pairings that are effective. It is going to be great!

Jesse Rogers
  (1:50 PM)

Yeah, a blurb in paper next day but major feature in my blog!!!! I just wont write till after bears games!

Fitz (My Cube)

Hey Jr, Do you see the rat playing well the rest of the year? I know he can't keep this pace up but he is paid like a #2 C so we should expect a high level the rest of the way correct? thank you sir

Jesse Rogers
  (1:52 PM)

Hard to say...Im telling you that is one SMART player..some of those passes hes making have been gretzky-like...still think its real hard to play the way he does on defense AND be expected to contribute more on offense..he's one of those guys I go back and forth on...

Jesse Rogers
  (1:52 PM)

Hard to say...Im telling you that is one SMART player..some of those passes hes making have been gretzky-like...still think its real hard to play the way he does on defense AND be expected to contribute more on offense..he's one of those guys I go back and forth on...

keith (downers grove)

what does viktor stalberg need to do to get better? he started the season hot and looked to be a guy who could fill the void of the departed versteeg. He did score the other night but hadn't scored in over two months and had only contributed 4 points since...

Jesse Rogers
  (1:53 PM)

Play with an edge..go hard in to corners..hes got skill but not enough to just be kane nad stay on permiter and even kane will go in tough areas sometimes...him and skille are still figuring it out..not always easy changing roles from week to week s lets see if he and skille stay on that 4th line and thrive some...they have had thier moments with dowell, no doubt

Luke (Hamden, CT)

Where do you see the Blackhawks going trade-wise? I liked the idea of bringing Eager back, but now that's not happening? Any rumors you're aware of?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:54 PM)

Pretty quiet since eager trade..I threw out Jarkko Ruutu cause Im sure Ottawa will be dumping soon...not sure he fits but his type does..

Scott (my desk)

Jesse, do we know what players stepped up during the first intermission sunday and lit a fire under this team? And what did they say?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:56 PM)

Toews for sure...seabs maybe? The way toews was talking it didnt sound like it was him but I guess it was...Just the usual "enough is enough" type stuff..lets not overplay that..remember they played ok in 2nd but it was the third where they took off...so hard to find direct cause and effect..plus trotz did it the night before..so it goes both ways...i say they rant when tied after 2 and see what happens

a hawk (Europe)

Hi Jesse! I would like to know who are roommates on the road. Sharpie and Jake, Vik and Jack (???), etc.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:57 PM)

Sharp might be by himslef now, last time I asked...seabs with bolland...bickell with scott..theres a few

David (Chicago)

Jesse, obviously if someone had the full answer they'd fix it, but in your opinion why is the PK so bad this year. It was a real strength last year and most of the members of the PK are still with us. What's the difference?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:58 PM)

I wish I knew..Ive asked eddie o and troy M. etc. not sure...started pressing when things were going bad and it got worse? mis-communication for sure..one guy gets aggressive but the others arent but WHY its happening, I just dont know...

Mike (Lincoln Park)

Do any of the 4 Hawk All-Stars get a bonus that counts against the Cap, like Toews winning the Conn Smythe last year?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:59 PM)

No. Only for entry level contracts anyway

Mike (Lincoln Park)

Any word on if Toews will be an alternate captain for the All-Star game?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:01 PM)

Should be announced by friday and no word..ANYONE could be named..buff, etc. they want to make it entertaining so they are matching up assts with captains that make sense..having said that i dont think they will go too outside the box so i could see Toews in there but you never know..I have to imagine Ovie is one..hes entertaining...all 3 for each side will conduct the draft so still a chance for toews (or i suppose one of the others) to be up there drafting...but was told, could be anyone

Stacy (Chicago)

Have you spoken with Ryan Johnson at all? Wondering how he's feeling be scratched so often. Any chance he gets in any time soon?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:02 PM)

I have..think hes pretty happey on an NHL roster...could get in there but hawks playing pretty decent overall and no injuries so I think he needs to wait

Janice (Naperville)

Jesse, are you going to the All Star game?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:04 PM)

Yes, will be there the friday morning before the game...they draft that night...will have videos and blogs and tweeting like usual! Oh, and I guess playing in the media hockey game sunday morn at 7 am on the All-star rink...Ill leave a chip in the ice for lidstrom to run over....

Rick (Chicago)

Any fun / embarrasing pranks that the team has pulled on you?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:05 PM)

Not really but I will tell you Seabrook likes to give me a hard time..followed closely by Keith...they know better, i have the power of the pen! or keyboard, or whatever

Mike (Lincoln Park)

Is it just me or does everything that come out of David Caplin's mouth about the Hawks make you want to vomit? He might be the dumbest Sports Talk guy in the city when it comes to sports especially hockey.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:05 PM)

I vomited a couple of times...

Jim (Palos Heights)

Jesse, What are your thoughts on Dowell's play this season? He's one of those guys I want to like but just can't figure out. Curious to hear your thoughts.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:07 PM)

Actually, think he could be even more of a grinder than he is...offense is fine but would like to see some big hits, etc...Here is the downside of guy scoring early in yr or career, they think that it will always be that way..its great dowell aand bickell have points..of course its great bt they still need to be more physical and pounding on forechceck but sometimes they feel like they're gretzky when they score a few goals...anyway, hes fine but could be better

Jay (GTE)

You've now missed the Nashville trip twice this year. Are you not interested in fine whiskey and country girls?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:08 PM)

Wow, keeping track of my schedule..nah, i am very fond of both...a few one game trips i miss for various reasons..save a few bucks for playoffs, I had to host on radio last sat morn..plus sat games get a few less views to my blog...nothing aganst nashville..had more than enough of it in playoffs!

Mike (Lincoln Park)

I get the impression that Chicago/NHL fans are embarrassing Toews more than Kane. I have heard a few stories about Kane that would not be appropriate for this setting but do you think Kane needs an attitude adjustment and needs to be a bit more humble like Toews?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:10 PM)

NO, I like the contrast and could care less about those stories as long as hes not getting in SERIOUS trouble...in my world, we need the Kanes AND toews out there

Jay (GTE)

Last year I heard rumbling that either the coaching staff or front office was turned off by Eager's lack of desire to mix it up or stand up for teammates. Did you ever hear that and if so, was it overblown or something that may have stopped them from reacquiring Eager?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:11 PM)

Hard to say exactly...I think there were a few moments where they expected him to step up (like when Wiz hit seabs) but not enough to not bring him back..remember he played some key shifts with kane and toews in playoffs..if they thought that poor of him, they would not have been interested this time around so the interest in him alone answeres your question

Anthony (Chicago)

What about Tuomo Ruutu? He's physical with a scoring touch. Personally I'd rather have him than Skille/Stalberg

Jesse Rogers
  (2:13 PM)

Dont need a top 6 really..and way too much money and saigned for next yr..plus carolina in the hunt..so not going to happen..his brother, maybe?

Gary (work)

i hear Bolland is one of the hawks best break away guys in practice, why does he never get a chance during the shootout? Love Sharp, but it seems like he NEVER scores on a break away. Ok, i know, he has a few times in games, but seems to miss more times than not, like miss the net all together, haha.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:15 PM)

Agree on sharp..think he would agree with you actually..I watch those shootouts in practice and i dont remember Bolland lighting it up so think you heard wrong there...hossa should prob get a chance or two again in shootout...I wouldnt have a prob with bolly get a shot as well...epscially after what he just did! but really that doesnt mean anything when it comes to a penalty shot

Corey (Cincinnati, OH)

Jesse, real simple question: What's eating Duncan Keith? Even in the recent win streaks he just hasn't looked like himself. At least not in the "himself" of his play last year I am remembering.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:16 PM)

1,000,000,000,000 dollar question...inside his head has been my answer all season? too much accolades coming at him last yr? hard to stay even keel and play at same level? Maybe he'll have one of those ordinary reg seasons and step up in playoffs...fatigue has to be a factor. has to

Mike (Lincoln Park)

now that the trade deadline is approaching to you think Bowman is the type of GM that will wait and see what other teams are doing first especially within the Conference before he pulls the trigger on a deal? Or do you think he wants to make the first splash?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:17 PM)

Dont think hes concerning himself with others..thats what he would tell you...SJ already made a couple moves so dont think he cares what order as long as hawks get their guy, whoever that might be

Matt (GA)

Everyone is talking about how soft the Hawks are, but I don't really see it. I was wondering if you thought there was a huge need for a physical body? Who would fit both financially and efficiently.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:19 PM)

More about the playoffs than now...the grind of a series usually needs skill and grit..just might bot have enough..course begining of last yr some thought they didnt have enough then either...eager was a guy...i mentioned jarkko ruutu..good thing is, even the good ones dont cost too much..mil or less

Aaron (Minneapolis)

Really, you should stop with the Ben Eager stuff. Nobody is buying it. Get new "sources", you're embarrassing yourself.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:20 PM)

This is fun..so even though I report hes on the market and say 4 teams are interested..then he gets traded, IM full of it...love it

Corey (Chicago)

Are you just a little concerned with the lack of goal production from Hossa this season, and what's the reason behind it?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:21 PM)

No doubt the injuries slowed him down..hes mentioned a few times even when he came back his timing was off...Unfortunately, this might be the hossa we get...never 100% production but still darn good

John (Bridgeview)

If the Blackhawks make the playoffs, who will fill the role of screening/annoying the opposing goalie as Buff had the last few years?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:22 PM)

I think Kopy and Brouwer have had some success this yr. Really liked Kopy at beginnig of year but those 2 and i think they can do it..but no one is like BIG BUFF!

Matt (Manhattan)

How do you feel about our bottom defensive pairings, I like the chemistry that has developed between Leddy and Hendry. Do you think the Hawks will look to bring in some type of defensemen to further solidify our back end. I feel that Boyton and Cullimore cant and wont get it done.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:23 PM)

Am liking leddy/hendry alot. Man, Leddy plays older than he is..what patience with the puck..he looks like a keeper right now...yes, they will look to bring in a 6 or 7 type guy..no way boynton is only extra guy going into playoffs

YUNG MONEY! (Palatine)

Seems like Duncan Keith fires 90% of his shots into a defender's shin pads. Is he conscious of that? What can be done to fix it?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:25 PM)

He is conscious of it...Q thinks other teams are focusing in on him...he doesnt have the hardest shot in the world--its still good--so maybe thet arent "afraid" to step in his lane much easier and quicker than others...hes been blocked a lot..Fix? maybe fake shot and move around the guy..would like to see that more...

Eric (Chicago)

Is it a requirement that if you cover an NHL team that you have to know how to skate?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:27 PM)

Have you seen the press? does it look like most can skate? I happen to have played most my life so I can and IM sure most canadian press can...otherwise its a toss up!

Michael G. (Villa Park)

Do you see the same salary cap restrictions this offseason as much as last offseason? Im curious as to whether we can get Seabs an extension, and do you think that would make anybody trade bait? Or are we just in a rut money wise?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:30 PM)

As long as Campbell, toews, kane, keith, and hossa are on this team it will always be tight..now when bolland is up in a few yrs that relieves some...when sharp is up the same, and hammer, etc. but the 5 guys for cap hits of 5-7 mil keep things tight...some yrs will be better than others...now if we add seabs at like 4-6 mil cap hit there is another one...but others come off...as for seabs..I would see how seaosn plays out..yes htey have a pipeline but hes realy the only physical one back there and hammer is devloping a little slower this yr..then there is the keith factor..do you lose keith a little if seabs goes...i would prob sign him and just deal with the rest but we dont know his demands. if its 6 mil or soupy money, that changes things

Janice (Naperville)

Jesse, what position do/did you play? Do you shoot right or left?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:31 PM)

Seriously, Im getting these questions? lol. center, righty.

Jay (GTE)

Are you trying to tell me that Tim Sassone can't skate?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:32 PM)

Ha! Dont know but the thought is funny! Will ask him

skip (aurora)

kane has been invisible for a good portion of the year - is he ready to start making an impact the rest of the season or should we expect to see his lackadasical play continue

Jesse Rogers
  (2:33 PM)

Hes been coming on..hes one of the few to admit hard to "get up' for all these early season games...I think strecth run and certianyl playoffs he gets going..but again, he is getting his points and thats about all I rate him on

Jeff (Chicago)

If there is a trade do you think the person we get will truly be an impactful player or will it just be a low under the radar type trade where it doesn't make much of a difference

Jesse Rogers
  (2:35 PM)

Hmm..Well it wont be a blockbuster name but doesnt mean wont have an impact..if they get the right 4th liner he'll be noticeable..BTW, I should say with seabs..if they know right now there is no way in hell they can afford him they i might consider trading him but I imagine everything is in flux..in other words I cant imagine his agent saying we'll take 8 mil or forget it...plus he;s RFA so no huge rush

Matt Dryer (Athens, GA)

What is the main reason for the Hawks inability to close games out this year? Is it due to the fact that they where handcuffed in releasing/trading so many tough bodies that loosened up other teams so Sharp/Toews/Kane/Big Buf could finish them off?

I think 2 things...the down yrs seabs and keith have had and turco as the No.1 in the early portion made it look even worse..crow has given up some in the third but not as many as turco did...but really seabs and keith have been on ice for a lot of those bad goals...its getting better...kind of

Jen (DeKalb)

Any chance you suppose in a couple of years that Sharp takes a discount to stay in Chicago longer? He seems to really like being here and I like what he contributes to the team, so I'd love to see him here longer.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:38 PM)

If I had to say either way, yes, i could see him being very reasonable but hes already near 4 mil so he has to go up...going to be expecnsive no matter what i imagine

Rick (Chicago)

Sharp seems to play well everywhere: center, wing, the point on the PP... so how much longer until he straps on the goalie pads and steps between the pipes?

Jesse Rogers

Great yr. MVP just ahead of toews right now

Joe (Palos)

How do some people get 3, 4 questions and you can't answer one of mine in 3 weeks? Who screens the questions anyway?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:40 PM)

Ill answer this one. Does it count? lol. I screen them but i dont look at the names..hardly look at the questions...just make sure no one is cursing at me (theres a few!) and then I post..sorry. theres like 200 at any one time to choose from..

Aaron (Minneapolis)

Any plans to challenge Bill Simmons' record for longest ESPN.com chat?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:41 PM)

What is the record..Im working on it..my only responsibility today so what the heck..we'll go a few more min

AP (Chicago)

Haha...I love that all of these random people think they have more insider information than the freaking beat reporter...yeesh. Good luck with that Jesse. Question - If the Hawks can bring in a boost on D, at who's expense for the roster spot? Leddy?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:42 PM)

Def not Leddy..hes entrenched (for now) in my opinion...if he can crack the top 6, its for hendry/boynton...

Mike (Lincoln Park)

How banged up is Toews still? I know he came back early from that shoulder injury but he has not looked the same at the dot since the injury?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:44 PM)

Good question except he had a good run until late so not sure its the injury..i talked to him after nashville games and he was REAL frustrated--most ive seen him--about that. Blamed the refs some, well, more than sum so maybe in his head a little..maybe break will help re-start him there..i mean they gave up 5 goals in regualtion time over weekend..40% were directly after faceoff losses..huge part of game

Joe (Palos)

Did the hit and suspension by Hjalmarsson early in the year take away his physicality?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:46 PM)

Here you go buddy..got you up there...Q thinks so. I think it was the contract that got to him Really do. But thats not really an excuse for not hitting...

Jim (Chicago)

Obviously we thought Turco would be the starter this season but things have changed. However, do you think he has done well enough to be signed on again next year to be a back-up to CC?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:48 PM)

Doubt it...just doesnt feel right but you never know

Eric (Chicago)

It's ok Jesse, we appreciate you answering all of our questions...Joe was always picked last on the playground too.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:48 PM)

Ha. good one

Luke (Hamden)

Youre top 8 western conference teams at the seasons end...in seeded order.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:50 PM)

Ok last one...Vancouver, Det. , Phx, Dallas, colorado, hawks, nash...either SJ/L.A. hard to imagine both those last 2 teams missing it..would love to throw nash out but dont think I can..anyway, pretty much an eductaed guess...
