  (4:07 PM)

Pierre is just finishing something up. He'll be here about 4:15 p.m. ET.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:13 PM)

OK folks, sorry for delay, was wrapping up Chris Pronger story. he's back tomorrow night vs. Senators. Let's get this thing going !

Thiago Simões (Brasil)

Hello PierreThere is the possibility of a lockout in the NHL again?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:15 PM)

Hello from Brazil ! Well there's always a chance, yes. Much less so than last time but still a chance. Donald Fehr is a formidable union leader. The NHL owners through Bettman meanwhile want some important changes. But my gut feeling is that they'll figure it out without jeopardizing the 2012-13 season

doug (Florida)

What to do with the LA Kings? Do they in your opinion have to make a move now? Any chance of maybe a rick Nash type trade? Your Thoughts. Thanks you

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:17 PM)

Forget Rick Nash, Jackets aren't moving him.But there'sa ton of heat on Lombardi right now. Not a lot out there though on trade market yet. More teams need to fall out of it.

Nate (Tampa)

When all is said and done, who will have had the more productive career with the Lightning? Marty St. Louis or Vinny Lecavalier?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:18 PM)

St. Louis. But it's encouraging to see how well Vinny is playing. That's huge for Tampa. Need to be a two-line offensive team to take heat off Stamkos

Andrew (New York)

Hi Pierre, Can the Islander finish the season with any dignity or is the franchise on a downward spiral?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:19 PM)

As bad as things are, you look at the progress of a guy like Tavares and that's got to be enough to keep you going as an Isles fan. He's becoming that star. But it's hard I know. You feel like maybe the losing will never end.

Charles (Taunton, MA)

Hey Pierre...love the chats...heard rumors that the Bruins were interested in Matt Moulsson? Any insight on that? Also, do you think as constructed the Bruins could win the Cup? Keep up the great work!

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:21 PM)

A source who would know said that Boston and Isles had not spoken about Moulson....

Pat (Detroit)

Hey Pierre, if a player who comes up from the AHL is injured in an NHL game, do the NHL teams have to pay him his NHL salary until he is able to play again even if he gets sent back to the AHL? And does that count against the salary cap?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:21 PM)

yes I believe he gets NHL salary while on IR

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What does the NHL Have to do to Prevent Concussions?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:21 PM)

enlarge Rule 48 to make it illegal for any checks to the head _ period

Tyler (New Hampshire)

Do the Bruins have a shot at making a deep postseason run? 5-1 in the last 6 games, 6-2-2 this month. Including wins over Pitt and Philly. I know they have yet to beat MTL, and need to do better within the division and at home but still I see Them winning the division and being a threat in the playoffs

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:22 PM)

They've looked real impressive last 2-3 weeks. yes they can have a deep run but right now a healthy Philly and healhty Pitt are best 2 teams in conference

Thomas (Lubbock, TX)

Hey Pierre, thanks for hopefully taking my question. But did you see the officiating in the Pens-Wings game last night? I thought it was pretty atrocious both ways. Did you see the penalty shot call (Conner's Goal) vs the penalty on Miller's breakaway? Was there that much difference for one to get a PS and not the other?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:23 PM)

I wrote in my blog last night that I couldn't believe Miller didn't get a penalty shot. Atrocious

Steven (CA)

Hey Pierre, How does Wellwood fit in the sharks current lineup, or is this Wilson planning for a future move wherein he trades another center (see Pavs or Mitchell)?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:23 PM)

Wilson told me this was about getting healthy bodies in with injuries to Clowe, Mitchell and suspension to NicholBut yes, I do think he wants to trade for a top-four D before Feb. 28

Cal Clutterbuck (Minneapolis, MN)

Pierre, did you see my new hairstyle during warmups last night? Should we call this look the "Grecian Formula" or the "Paul from the Wonder Years"?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:24 PM)

No I did not. Strangely enough on a busy NHL night, I did not choose to watch Minnesota-Edmonton :)

Jesse S. (Carmel, NY)

Pierre, who would you say is this year's darkhorse guy that has come from the minors or otherwise out of nowhere to be a surprise top scorer for his team....kind of like what Matt Moulson was last year for the Islanders? At first I thought maybe Loui Eriksson, but he was a first line player last year and also a Swedish Olympian. Anybody else come to mind immediately?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:25 PM)

Welcome back Jesse.Darche has been surprising in Montreal. Boyle in NYR.

Lawrence (Toronto)

Sidney boycotts All-Star game to draw league attention to headshots. Why did it take this long for someone to actually protest! Especially a superstar like Sid?!

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:25 PM)

He's not boycotting the all-star game. He denied that yesterday. He miss it through injury, but he's not boycotting it

Richard D (San Jose)

Have you been cured of the Canucks fever? But seriously, Philadelphia with Pronger back looks much more daunting. Canucks lack the bonafide proven playoff performer like Chris. He has shown it time and again (Edm, Ana).

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:26 PM)

Flyers-Canucks Cup final? Love it

Scott (Westchester)

Hi Pierre, I read your Daily Debate with Burnside about the Rangers, and it made me more content about their overall progession, but at the same time worrisome about Marian Gaborik. His surgery's starting to show up in his game and that contract's not going anywhere!

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:27 PM)

Well, as a reader pointed out to me via twitter today, he still scored 42 goals last seaosn. But I look at him this year and I don't see his usual explosion/speed.

Phil (Kingston, ONT)

What's you most memorable game you've attended since covering the NHL?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:32 PM)

Some memorable games I've covered in my career:2002, 06 and 2010 Olympic gold medal games (plus witnessing Belarus upset Sweden in 2002)Patrick Roy's first game after trade to Colorado in Dec 1996 from Montreal was in Toronto and I was there working itWendel Clark's return to to Toronto after trade from Islanders and he scores one of his first shifts. The Garden shook.Yzerman in OT vs. Jon Casey, Blues-Wings in 96 or 97 can't remember exact yearArturs IRbe and Latvia upset star-studded Russian team in front of Vladimir Putin at 2000 IIHF men's worlds in St. Peterburg, Russia. Latvians crying out of pure emotion after the game, telling me stories about Soviet tanks invading Warsaw 10 years earlier. Will never forget being there for that.covered 2002, 03, 04, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 Cup finals _ all great stuff

Rich (Ottawa)

My SENS are tanking, Pierre! Would it benefit them draft-wise to completely tank it the REST of the season, as well?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:32 PM)

yes

Ryan (Baine Harbour, Newfoundland)

Hey Pierre, Lidstrom is having an amazing season with 42 points in 46 games and his team is playing great as well despite key injuries. I was wondering what you think his chances are at winning his seventh Norris trophy?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:32 PM)

Very very good. I know he'll be getting my first-place vote on my official ballot

Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh, PA)

Geno no play tomorrow. Knee hurt. I stay home and play video game with Seedney instead. Good thing we play Devils....we crush them like bug with Staalsy as #1 center.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:33 PM)

Geno, when you decide to show up again this year let us know.

Alex (PIttsburgh)

Pierre, we have all seen that the Pens are capable of scoring and winning in bunches, even without one of their stars in the lineup. However with the recent injuries to Crosby and now Malkin (and Staal still getting into top form), do you feel that their supporting cast has the talent to continue to keep pace with the Flyers in the East until they return?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:33 PM)

no, Flyers will widen gap until Sid returns

Nikki (College Station, TX)

What do you think about the Sharks two newest acquisitions? Can they do more for the team besides plug a couple of holes in the lineup that were caused by injury/suspension?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:33 PM)

Good thing about Eager's acquition is that once Clowe returns, he doesn't have to fight as much

Alex V (Fairview Heights, IL)

Ok Pierre, the blues haven't had any luck with signing players from the KHL and then getting them through waivers. Who do you think they should go after or have the best chance of getting that is a good fit to make a playoff run?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:35 PM)

Honestly at this point there's not much on the market ... ask me closer to Feb. 28 when more teams have decided they're sellers

Adam (Ohio)

Any hope for a Blue Jackets fan? Can this team still make the playoffs?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:35 PM)

no (sorry)

Karen (San Jose)

Hello Pierre, your the best!I just want your opinion to now that the Sharks added two players before the deadline, do they make the playoffs?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:35 PM)

yes they'll make the playoffs.

Chad (North Bay)

Hey Pierre, could you give me one surprise team to make the playoffs and one not to make them?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:36 PM)

North Bay, one of my hometowns in Northern Ontario ! nicesurprise team to make it _ Hurricanessurpirse team to not make it _ LA

Kevin Cronan (New Jersey)

Due to the recent turn around of the devils, is Johnny Mac the only one that can blamed for this season?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:37 PM)

no, it goes deeper than that

christian gendron (Montreal)

Salut Pierre.Whit only 2 months before the trade deadline , In the group of players UFA or RFA at the end of the season, which big name will move for sure???

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:37 PM)

Arnott

Paul (Rhode Island)

How hot is the seat that Terry Murray is currently sitting in? If the Kings do make a change who do you see Lombardi bringing in?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:37 PM)

I think the heat's just as hot on the GM

Reuben (England )

Can the Hurricanes make the playoffs?

Reuben (England )

Could the Bruins win the East?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:38 PM)

no

AA (MS)

Hey Pierre, How many more games do you see Sid missing and what form will he come back with?? Do you think he might not go back to his full throttle mood and let up a little bit in fear of getting injured again?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:38 PM)

AA, not even Sid knows how much longer he'll be out so foolish for anybody else to guess

Chuck Vidalin (Vancouver)

With all the discussion going about suspensions, I have had a long-standing thought that when a player is suspended, he should have to sit out all remaining games against the team that where the incident occurred. Otherwise, if the teams are inter-divisional or inter-conference, all of the other teams benefit from the suspension. The victimized team actually is hurt by the suspension, unless they happen to play the team in short order, as their competitors face a depleted team. This would also reduce any retribution scenarios when the two teams meet up again later in the season. Thoughts?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:38 PM)

good luck selling that to the NHLPA

Joey (PA)

What do you think about the Pens cap situation? With Crosby and now Malkin injured, could they need a center? Can they even make a move?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:39 PM)

A center???????

Mike (Detroit)

Should I pre order my Dallas Stars 2011 Stanley Cup Champions T-shirt yet?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:39 PM)

Um.... may want to wait on that one... great season, superb story.... but Cup runs through Philly, Vancouver, Pitt, Detroit....

jimh (miami, fl)

The Panthers are eight points out with four games in hand. Are they buyers or sellers in a month and a half?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:39 PM)

Depends how many points they're out :)

Bruce (Providence)

hey Pierre do you have a twitter account I can follow? Also any chance the Bruins add another piece before the deadline?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:40 PM)

Twitter; Real_ESPNLeBrun (because an imposter pretended to be me for a few months last year before I joined twitter)And yes, I think the B's will try to add a d-man before Feb. 28

Lee (New York, NY)

How many players will have to forgo the All Star Game before Tavares gets a spot?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:41 PM)

Hard to argue with Briere going. Plus Flyers lead the league and only had one player going?

Gary (Chicago)

Any rumblings of Blackhawk trade rumors? Your thoughts on the team the rest of the season?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:42 PM)

All I know is that Stan Bowman told me last month that he wants to add a defenseman before Feb. 28

Marc (Malden, MA)

Is this the year the rest of the league finally realizes that Patrice Bergeron should win the Selke?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:42 PM)

maybe. Or Mike Richards?

Chris (Toronto)

Hi Pierre. From your perspective, have the Leafs turned a corner coming off their surprisingly successful road trip? There are undoubtedly pieces still missing, but is it fair to say that for the first time in a while, this team is developing towards respectability?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:43 PM)

I think this team is headed in the right direction. Obviously the playoffs are out of the question but I think they're headed in right direction

Joey (PA)

What direction are the Sens going in? Could Fisher, Phillips, and Michalek be on the move sooner rather than later?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:43 PM)

Phillips, UFA July 1, could be moved before Feb. 28

Jeff (NY)

Dubinsky out 3-4 weeks - add him to Callahan, Prospal, Christensen, Rangers in TROUBLE.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:43 PM)

Sadly, that's like almost every other team in the league. Habs lost 3 players in one game last night. Injuries all over the place

Lee (New York, NY)

Has there been any talk of using a coaches challenge system for video reviews on plays that cannot be reviewed under the current parameters?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:44 PM)

Yes it was talked about at GMs meeting in November here in Toronto but GMs didn't like the idea... wouldn't be surprised if they brought it up again though

Dreary (NJ)

Hi,Where is Buccigross?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:45 PM)

In Bristol, CT., I believe

Jason (edmonton)

All I heard when pitts lost the first game they played without Sid how it proves he should have the hart trophy, now that the pens are winning against good teams without him easily(like in Detroit last night) and kunitz in particular who is still producing without Sid on his line, all I hear is how Stamkos doesn't deserve the hart yet, last I checked Stamkos has a team that would not make the playoffs if it wasn't for his production and Sid has a team that is still a cup contender without Sid. What is up with that? if you vote on the hart based on points per game average, it would not be called the most valuable to your team, Stamkos is clearly that to his team, without him don't tell me St. Louis gets the points he gets, we all saw how the lightning did without Stamkos producing in the 50 goal pace he does!

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:45 PM)

You can argue both sides of that until you're blue in the face. That's the beauty of pro sports

Joshua (Boston)

what about Tim Thomas I know they have the Vezna for best goalie but he has keept the Bruins together this season?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:46 PM)

he's been nothing short of AWESOME

Adam (Ohio)

Blue Jackets....help!

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:46 PM)

um, yeah

Bryan (Pullman, WA)

Pierre, I'm starting to get fed up with the Wild not doing anything to help out their goal scoring. Will they bring someone in to help score some goals this year and make a run at the playoffs? Thanks, keep up the good work.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:47 PM)

Bryan, let me ask you a question: which player do you believe is actually available and how much would you be willing to give up for him?GMs get hammered all the time by their fans but real life is tough when it comes to making trades

Dustin (Redondo Beach, Ca)

Is it just me or are the Kings showing a complete like of fire? somebody get mad and throw a chair or cuss someone out Boudreau style, bench someone, or do something Lombardi or Murray, this is getting old. Typical Kings..

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:48 PM)

agreed,

Jon (Pittsburgh, PA)

Pierre, is there any truth to some of the rumors going around that Malkin could miss an extended period of time with his latest undisclosed injury?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:48 PM)

well,he's not playing tomrrow

Gary (Chicago)

Sorry Pierre, Vancouver has to get thru the Hawks, until they beat them in a series, I'm not convinced the Nucks have the right mental make up to make the Finals. Thoughts?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:48 PM)

That's a fair point. Chicago does have their number. No question

Ej (Bloomington, MN)

Your thoughts on Todd Richards having Wild in playoff hunt without Zidlicky, Latendresse and a healthy goalie the last month?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:50 PM)

Sadly, no differnt than 12 others teams missing good players. Pitt with no Sid. Montreal missing half their team. Detroit missing their entire team. Rangers hammered with injuries. Ottawa no Spezza. Anaheim no Getzlaf. nashville no lombardi all year long. San Jose always have somebody out, now it's Clowe and Mitchell. Chicago was banged up most of year. Goes on and on and on

Tom (Chatham)

Who on Maple Leafs wwould be most tradeable and what could they expect in return

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:50 PM)

Versteeg or MacArthur or Kaberle

Patrice Bergeron (Boston)

When will I ever get the respect I deserve and win the Selke award...I feel I always get overlooked

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:51 PM)

Je ne sais pas

B-Diddy (Munstoeville, WYO)

Greetings Pierre-Are my Avs going to get on a run or will it be more of the same over the next few weeks? Getting Cumiskey back should help, fastest guy you've never heard of.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:52 PM)

I think the Avs are going on a run. They're for real. Love their win over Vancouver last night. Very important win for them.

John (Toronto)

We changed the rules to the game to help out guys sid's size from being held on the boards and nullified, after the lockout to help Sid produce points, now we are going to make this game a non-hitting affair? Do you guys like all-star style games? why not just change the rules for one guy, the biggest whiner of all, Sid, and make sure that no one touches him again, while others like ovy/stamkos/iginla/Sedin's are played differently, so we can at least keep the game entertaining, it is obvious that Sid is just saying this stuff because he knows he is one hit away from being concussed again, and wants the players to know the league will come down hard on them if they do.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:52 PM)

No question the flip side to make Rule 48 more stringent is fear of no hitting

Merlo (Fairfax, VA)

Please ignore Bitter, Pierre. My Caps are fine, right?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:53 PM)

I'd say they're ok... but not great right now... I do like the way they're playing two-way hockey which will serve them better come spring...

Steve (Annapolis)

If you were GMGM what would you do with the Caps between now and the playoffs? (Fire an Asst. Coach? Get a FA Center? Look for a veteran netminder? Tell Ovie and Backie to get it in gear?)

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:53 PM)

I'd look for veteran, second-line center

jason (oshawa)

do you think that Saku Koivu will get a standing ovation in montreal on saturday? I hope he does

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:54 PM)

Sure hope he does... Spoke to him today after practice here in Montreal. He says he's nervous about it... fans are classy in Montreal so I think they'll treat him well

Paul (Rhode Island)

How hot is the seat that Terry Murray is currently sitting in? If the Kings do make a change who do you see Lombardi bringing in?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:54 PM)

tres chaud

Moss (Brooklyn)

Did Lundqvist have a right to get angry when he got brazzed by Pacioretty over the weekend? How has he performing this season as a leader on a young Ranger team?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:55 PM)

No goalie likes to get touched. They're all the same that way

Howdy Boy (Quantico)

Pierre....do you get paid to suck the Flyer's dick or do it out of true love ?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:55 PM)

Harsh. Funny thing is Flyers fans always say I hate them.Just goes to show fans always see what they want to see

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:56 PM)

FYI Helene Elliott of LA Times just tweeted that Lombardi told her no big trade nor any coaching change imminent for Kings

Howdy Boy (Quantico)

Will the Sharks CHOKE again in the playoffs too ?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:56 PM)

So.... Sharks choked last year by going to Final Four???

Dave (Buffalo, NY)

What was up with HSBC Arena last night? Too many weird injuries and players getting hit by their own teammates.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:57 PM)

very strange game. Though Lindy Ruff and Kirk Muller might have to suit up at one point

DumbPuck® (Bay Area)

Who do you see becoming available as the trade deadline nears? Specifically asking about defensmen.

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:57 PM)

Keep an eye on Chris Phillips

Sean (Colorado)

Will the Stars be able to resign Brad Richards now that they have named an item team president?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:58 PM)

They're gooing to try.... not sure they'll offer enough though....

Aaron (St. Charles)

Prediction time: the Blackhawks will get the 4 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. (I'll come back in April to gloat about my foresight!)

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:59 PM)

posted just for you

John Tortorella (New York City)

Pierre, now Dubinsky is out with a fractured leg! To borrow a phrase from Bruce Boudreau.....this is getting ****ing ridiculous! Are we the most injured team in the league right now or does that go to Detroit or St. Louis?

Pierre LeBrun
  (4:59 PM)

Detroit and St. Louis and Montreal real banged up... earlier post I ran down bunch of teams.

Dave (Buffalo, NY)

Say Pegula buys the Sabres, and you become the new GM. Which key players do you keep, and which do you sell? Are there any cornerstones besides Miller?

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:00 PM)

I think you're confusing me with another Pierre. I'm not GM material

Phil (Pittsburgh)

If hockey ever gets to the level of statistical analysis that is done in baseball, what is the one stat that you would want to see measured (or isn't measured now)?

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:01 PM)

I don't want more stats

c_diercks (NYC)

Hey Mr. Lebrun. What's your take on Parise's chances of re-signing with the Devs now that the youth is beginning to prove itself to the naysayers? You know what I want to hear, but gimme a reasonable prognostication. Just for funzies. Thanks, as always.

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:02 PM)

I know I'm in the minority in the hockey media world but I think Parise stays

sonny (clayboh, fl)

You mentioned a couple of cities that the cup runs through...seems like you forgot one, like perhaps where it currently rests? You aren't the only one writing off the Blackhawks though...do you think it's wise, who wants to play them in the playoffs?

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:03 PM)

I did forget them. My bad

kevin (nj)

hey pierre, dont u think lavy should be getting more love for coach of the year with the first place flyers?

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:05 PM)

he certainly deserves it but Kevin, Jack Adams has in recent years been about rewarding coach whose team surprised the most. for better or worse that's what it's been

Tom (New York )

I'm disagreeing with Jason's statement because there comes a time when you can be on the level of the best. Stamkos is in his 3rd year.... to Sid's 6th year. Until Stamkos can win all the awards and show the leadership and get the complete respect from the league, he won't be on Crosby's level. All of this coming from a bitter Rangers fan who wishes we could have Sidney Crosby. Fans can hate on him all they want but any team would sell a kidney for him

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:05 PM)

interesting

Think the Hawks are kicking themselves now for not finding a way to keep Byfuglien??

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:07 PM)

I thin they miss Ladd just as much. But tough decisions had to be made. Cap killed them

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:07 PM)

folks here's my Pronger story today after chatting with him, http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/3694/chris-pronger-returns-to-hot-flyers-lineup

mike (nj)

how come lamoriello gets roasted for bringing back rolston, arnott, holik, lemaire, etc, but when another gm like nieuwendyk does the same thing he's applauded? any devils fan will tell you that langenbrunner has even less left in the tank than any of those guys did when lamoriello got them. everyone thinks that "captain america" is so great, yet he probably has more points setting up the opposing team this year than he does playing for his own team (check out his sick feed to josh bailey from a few weeks ago). anyone ever stop to think about why nj had no interest in re-signing their captain? (don't say so they have room for parise, they'd have room for him just by adding arnott's expiring contract and however much the salary cap rises)

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:09 PM)

Difference is that Langenbrunner has five months left on his deal. Lou brought back Rolston with massive, huge contract

Pierre LeBrun
  (5:10 PM)

OK puck fans, gotta run. Enjoyed your questions once again this week. Thanks for taking the time when I know you could be doing other things.Cheers
