Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings and salutations. Thanks for stopping in. Lots of buzz in the air, but it may be the 6 foot tall honeybee hive we found 50 feet up in a tree in our yard. Anyway, let's chat."Kenny'd talk. Alex, Alex would be ok...Kenny'd talk".

steff chi town baby [via mobile]

are the bulls in your opinion legit and who u got winning sunday bears or packers lol

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

The Bulls are legit. Yes they are. I have no clue about the football game. I can name only two of the 44 starters.

SteveFitz (Chicago, IL)

Some local guy on the radio said he though Blake and D Rose were the 2 most exciting players in the NBA that he'd pay to watch play. Do you agree?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Probably not. But they are up there. The wings from Miami are spectacular. So are Durant and Westbrook.

Travis Y. (Pasadena)

Kobe is great, but at the end of games he stops running the offense and goes one on one, leaving the rest of the team idle. Should they run their offense or let him go one on one?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Really Travis. We're going to have this discussion now, after he has 5 rings?

Dan (Philadelphia)

Something I don't understand. If the Sixers were winning about the same without Iguodala and they could get a good young player and/or pick for him to add to the young talent they have assembled why wouldn't they? They won't win a championship in the near future but this team can grow and in a lot of ways Iggy is hindering the growth of other players(Meeks, Turner). Can you explain the Sixers thinking.

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

No, but I can suggest that the market for AI is not huge. Very expensive player for what he brings.

gp (mpls)

Ask Lamarcus Aldridge if Kevin Love belongs in the All Star game. On a bad team someone has to score and someone has to rebound, it doesn't make them an All Star. Since darko isn't a good rebounder Love's numbers are inflated. He's much improved, but not All Star worthy IMO? Love the chats, thanks!

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

He's clearly all-star worthy, but he's not alone. LA is terrific and is better right now, lots of other guys too. But Love's #'s can not be ignored.

Sources: (???)

Why are we never right?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

The better question is, why do the same guys keep talking to you?

Miles (Fort Lauderdale)

Is the fact that Spurs have been relatively unscathed by injuries this year (especially the Big 3) a major reason for achieving so much success this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Yes, of course.

Michael C. (Westport, CT)

Do you think the new CBA will allow teams to sign their own players for more money and years than what now exists in order to help stop the trend of stars leaving?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

No i do not.

Mo (Chicago)

Hey David, is Luol Deng's defense a product of Thib's system or is he just playing great on the ball? I don't think he gets enough credit for this aspect of his game.

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

He's always been a good defender, and is improved thanks to excellent coaching and strategy.

Matt (Toronto, ON)

Bargnani seems to be a decent #1 option, DeRozan has had a good run going the last several weeks and Ed Davis continues to show he belongs, where do you look for help in the draft? Obviously Irving would be perfect for the Raps, but who else do you see as a good fit? Thanks for the chat!

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

It's too early to say, but there are a number of guys who could help.

Cheesehead Sports Nut (Chicago, IL)

I am a lawyer with a technology background that is considering making a career change. Much like every other sports fan, I would love to work in the front office of a professional sports franchise one day. Besides a high barrier of entry, what are some of the other positives and negatives of working in the front office of a professional sports franchise? As a way to jump-start my knowledge base and cultivate networking opportunities, I am considering entering a Sports Management program at Northwestern University. Do you have any advice for people like me that are trying to break into sports?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Start at the bottom and work yourself up.

Cheesehead Sports Nut (Chicago, IL)

The Phoenix Suns seem to have the best training staff in the NBA. Former injury riddled players like Grant Hill and Shaq thrived while playing for the Suns. Players rave about how great the training staff is in Phoenix. Do you have any particular insight about the Phoenix Suns training staff?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

No, but I do know this. Trainers (and I am not one) are not all equal. They can be as different as Charles Barkley and Mugsy Bogues. Both NBA players, but vastly different.

steve from battle creek (facebook question) (battle creek, MI)

Greg Monroe has really stepped up late. playing with lots of energy. in 5yrs at age of 25 can he be all-star center and your general thoughts of his play. really value your opinionThanks

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

I don't see him an an all-star, but you'd be happy with a legit starting center, right? Or even a pf.

Daryl (Austin)

Coach, I know you have been married a long time. I'm getting hitched up in a month. My fiance and are big NBA and Spurs fans and we both love your game analysis and life outlook. Any advice you can give us on how to make our marriage last?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

I'm no guru on that, though 20+ years of marriage has taught me this. Be decent to each other, at all times. And I'd bet we've said "I love you" to each other every single day since we got married in 1990. Nice to hear that from someone you love.

Blake Griffin (LA)

I am exciting, explosive and all that but can they put enough around me to be true superstar?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Can and are.

Gumbeaux (Utah)

The Jazz seem to lose games they really should not (Wizards yesterday...) and have been that way as long as I can remember (lost 3 games to the T-Wolves last year for immediate frame of ref.) Do you have any idea why?!

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Honestly, all due respect to Sloan, I don't think they respond to him the way his teams once did. They like and respect him, sure. But I've seen them play a lot and they have too many stretches of boredom for my liking.

J (Milwaukee)

2 or 3 years from now, who is the better player, Durant or Griffin? Generally speaking would you prefer to build a team around one over the other?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

I'd lean Durant. Scorers at his level are so rare.

Chris (Orlando)

In your opinion, is there a commentator more annoying and inaccurate than Reggie Miller?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Yes. Many.

Scott Linskey (Chicago)

How do you see a bulls-knicks playoff series playing out with both teams healthy and bulls with home-court of course?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Assuming good health all around, I like Chicago. But let's see what happens in the trade world.

Jack (Miami)

Who hoists the trophy first, LeBron or DRose?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Big Z or Haslem.

vk (dc)

If you were working with Nick Young, what would you do to improve his game? The guy can flat out score, but rings of a lot of ZEROs in the other columns.

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

I'm sure they are watching lots of tape in those zero categories.

Adam (Toronto)

David,What have you seen out of Demar DeRozan lately? Interesting piece in the NY Times last week about how he needed to focus solely on scoring and forget about the rest of his game - he's not that one dimensional though... is he?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

He's been impressive as a scorer, for sure. He's still so young, any progress is important in any area.

Will (Philly)

Did you enjoy Ricky Gervais?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

No. I enjoyed a date with my wife and some friends to a great restaurant and "The Kings Speech". Awesome.

string (chicago)

would you still say you dont consider rose to not be a top 5 pg after his play this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Yesterday, no. Today, yes. You Rose guys have to stop this. He has improved a great deal, anointing him before he earned it made no sense. He's fantastic, now.

Travis Y. (Pasadena)

When you watch basketball games, it's generally hard to watch the ball and the surrounding movement on the court. What do you watch for as a Coach or lover of the game?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

I don't really think about it, but I probably see the ball less than 30% of the time. It's nice to have a dvr to back up with when I want to see the shot, dunk, etc.

Bill (ATL)

David, what should the Pistons do with Rip Hamilton if the 'Melo deal falls apart? Both sides are really well past the point of no return at this point, right?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Right.

Eric (New York, NY)

Thorpedo! I know this sounds crazy, and you've started handing out bans again, so I'm going out on a limb: D12 for Bynum/Gasol/picks - who says no? Orlando avoids the potential Bosh/Melo conundrum with Dwight in the summer of 2012, Lakers plan for the post-Kobe future, Dwight continues to trace Shaq's steps...

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Interesting idea. Otis would have to have a loing meeting with D12 first, right?

Tommy G. (Houston)

Coach Thorpe, I know you hate to speculate on stuff, and this question hit's close to home, but how is Kevin Martin going to be left off the all-star roster? He's one of the best scorers in the league and is an underrated passer. Our offense flows so much more smoothly when he's in the game. I've seen him play very good defense too, steals, deflections, and the like. We'd be lost without him, and I love that he has no ego. The all-star game needs guys like him.

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

He's having a career best year, but the west is loaded.

Joe (NY)

Do you think Griffin will end up being a better player than Dwight?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

I don't.

SteveFitz (Chicago, IL)

I love Rose, favorite player in the NBA, obvisouly I'm biased, but you need to ban these "you don't praise or respect Rose" chatters. You've given him enough praise and respect already.

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Thanks. I didn't love him when his PER was sub 14, and they have never forgotten it.

Matthew (Halifax)

Watching last night's LA vs OKC, I argued with my roommate that the 3 most athletically explosive guards in the league were Westbrook, Rose and Monta. Who do you think are the most athletic guards?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Those 3. Nicely done. Who are we missing?

Randy (Portland)

Would you rather want to be able to dunk like Blake griffin or shoot like Ray Allen?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Neither. Think like Warren Buffet.

Jack (NYC)

For those that say Love only gets rebounds because nobody else on the team does, the 5 guys on the other team also know that and concentrqte on keeping Love off the boards which makes his numbers even more amazing.

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Indeed.

jr (raleigh)

mr. mom is totally underated, just like planes trains and automobiles.no question today, just thanks for your insight.

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Nicely done. Mr. Mom was the first movie I saw in college. Took two girls to a midnight showing. Get your mind out of the gutter. One was my favorite cousin Lynn and the other was her roommate, who was dating Lynn's brother (Cousin Jeff). But wow was that a great flick.

Marshall ('Sota)

Hey David, I wanted to get your take on the following player's hall of fame chances. - Ray Allen: 1 Championship, All-Star, out of this world shooter, very good numbers and incredible sportsmanship.- Pau Gasol: 2 championships already, All-star, Plenty of international medals, ROY, credited for boosting current lakers winners recent championship streak, almost single handedly made the Grizzlies a playoff team as a young player, very good numbers, terrific overall skill set.I'd include let both in, what about you? Thanks for the input, have a great chat!

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

In and in, probably. Gasol may still have some work to do.

Nicole (Liberty)

Why would Denver want anyone from a team that has no real talent like NJ and a rookie that cant score regularly and yesterday had 0 pts and 7 rebs its horrible you would think Denver would want more than NJ can offer.

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Check out Dirk's rookie stats, or Nash's.

ivan (chicago)

Do you think the bulls could win a 7 game series with the heat?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Yes, Noah would be a big difference maker. But I'd favor Miami heavily.

Greg (MN)

Did you just compare Derrick Favors to Dirk and Nash?Just kidding, I got your point...

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Thanks, a ban was forming.

Steven (NYC)

If you were an owner starting an expansion team, who would you hire as your coach?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Pop or Stan.

Brian (Kent, OH)

David, did you catch Bosh's statements about not diving for a ball when it's near someone's legs? What are your thoughts? I always thought sacrificing your body for loose balls was looked upon favorably.

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

I didn't, but lots of questions in here about them. Not sure what the heck was talking about.

Marc (Charlotte)

220, 221, whatever it takes.

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Whatever happened to Martin Mull?

Lloyd (Chicago)

As a Bulls fan, I really don't understand why people need to hear from you that Rose is the best pg in the league. The Bulls are playing their best ball since the Jordan years and have Rose leading the way. Who cares if Chris Paul is better? My goodness people...Chill

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Will you be my new best friend? Nicely done Lloyd.

Nathan (Coralville, IA)

Any chance D Rose wins MVP?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Yes, but it's not likely.

Rob (Melbourne, Aus)

Hi David, does Milwaukee have anyone on the roster who might consider making a post entry pass once in a while? It's brutal watching our man Bogut dominate on D only to have Jennings and Salmons throw up junk on the other end.

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Agreed.

Greg (NYC)

Who is the league's best pick and roll PG? Is is still Nash?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Yes, or CP3?D Will.

James (KS)

Coupon poker that's the stuff.

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

:)

Travis Y. (Pasadena)

If you could change anything about Dwight Howard's offensive game what would you change?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

His free throw percentage, by changing his form.

Adnan (Chicago)

Do you think the Bulls have proven that you can have good team defense without having an elite defender on the team?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

To quote a Thorpe family traditional phrase, "it has always been thus".

Scott (Westchester)

Hi David, what's your most memorable game you've been at?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Game 5, Mavs in Miami. For college it was the Sweet 16 game in 1994, also in Miami, when Florida beat UConn. Florida's starting center was like a son to me. He still is.

Joe (CO)

Did you know that Melo is keeping his options open?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

So it seems.

kyle (washington dc)

y isnt rose the MVP? Who in the heck is the MVP then? who is doing the most with the least? please answer that

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

I'd give it to the Miami duo.

Tom (Boston)

Whos a better team Miami without the big three or the Cleveland Cavs?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Cavs in a romp.

Julius (Atlanta)

David, enjoy your chats, you answer more than several analysts combined. My question is Lakers aren't clicking to me. I know there's time to right the ship, do you think it will happen though?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Have they won 8 of 10? I think they are finding their groove again.

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

I only have a few more mins today. Send in some good questions.

Tom (Boston)

Without the big three are the Heat the NBA's worst team?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

By a mile.

Jeremy (NYC)

What parallel universe did Ben Gordon fall into? Remember when he was one of the most clutch scorers in the league. Now he's getting 24 mpg on an awful Pistons team.

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

I bet that's one guy who would like to rewrite the last 3 years of his life.

Greg (NYC)

When you see a poor defensive team, what is usually the first trait you can identify as their deficiency?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Bad coaching.

JC (LA)

Couldn't you also say that a lot of teams would be awful without their best three players?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Awful, yes. But not as awful.

Randy (Portland)

Is the Ben Gordon situation similar to Hedo's? I think he needs to find his way back to Chicago and fill both their needs.

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

I don't see how they do it and make the salaries work.

Dreezy (Australia)

I'm sorry but there is NO WAY the NBA would give the MVP to two people... Has that even ever happened before?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

I'm not the NBA.

Jake (Miami)

What's the most ridiculous nickname someones given you in one of these chats? I kinda get "Thorpedo" but there has to be funnier/more random ones that make no sense.

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

I don't even see the names most of the time.

Joe (NY)

Who is the hardest worker you ever coached?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Lots of guys practice like their lives are on the line. But no one has ever been more willing to get back at 4am from a back to back road trip and still come to the gym at 8am than Kevin Martin. He's as committed to his craft as any player I've known.

Logan (Maryland)

What do the Bulls have to give the Rockets to get Courtney Lee

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

I don't know, but I bet we see this story spring up soon.

Chuck (Chicago, IL)

James Johnson has to have some sort of potential as a defender/rebounder/energy guy in this league. He just needs to know his role and stick to it. Your thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

I couldn't have written it any better myself.

Woody (Waterville)

When did PER become the gospel for evaluating players? It completely undervalues defense and overvalues rebounding and a high shooting percentage. It has Ryan Anderson ranked ahead of KG!

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

It's just one measuring stick.

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

I have to leave-sorry about this. Thanks for some great questions. Have a great week. be safe.
