Chat with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

Good morning gang! We're back again for another hour of fantasy chattage. Second cup of coffee is in hand... who is leading off for us today?

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will win the Super Bowl Between the Packers & the Steelers?

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

With two weeks to prepare, I can't see the Steelers losing.

Fernando (San Diego)

Why is David Price so low on the preliminary rankings? You would think the runner up cy young would get some love from some people.

AJ Mass
  (11:04 AM)

Price could have a better year statistically and still not sniff 19 wins. The fact is from a fantasy standpoint, with Wins still carrying 25 percent of a pitcher's ultimate value, it's hard to trust Price to be a top-5 type because that's the one category they really cannot control.

Eric (Chicago)

Will Caleb Hanie be fantasy worthy next year? Cutler can't come back from that!

AJ Mass
  (11:05 AM)

Let's not be too hasty here. If the Bears coaches or doctors are to blame for Cutler not getting back in there, then there's no reason Cutler won't be starting Week 1.

Jordan (Peoria)

AJ, I am keeping Crawford, Reyes, CarGo...In a 12 team league where 8 of the top 10 3B are being kept, should I look to grab Michael Young early or just wait on 3B?

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

You can certainly afford to wait since you're, in essence, only competing with 3 other owners for that next guy... but I have Young valued in the top 50.

Joe (NY)

What does the Andruw Jones deal mean for the value of Yankee OF in fantasy this season?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

Not much... He's essentially going to become Marcus Thames, so I don't see a whole lot of difference between 2010 and 2011 in terms of how this impacts the rest of the roster.

Nick (Nc)

Will Darren mfadden be a top fantasy rb in 2011?

AJ Mass
  (11:12 AM)

If the new regime steps up and declares him to be the man, then he has a chance. If there's that same "deferring to Al" wishy-washiness, then no.

AJ Mass
  (11:12 AM)

Funny, all those Bears fans from last Monday are gone... hmmm. Wonder what happened?

Ryan (WA)

How quickly will Hank Conger be given the starting job in LA?

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

I don't think they rush him along. Mathis should handle the bulk of the duties -- it's not like Napoli was an everyday backstop there.

Joe (Pittsburgh)

In regards to the Run DMC and the new regime "deferring to Al" comment...isnt Al a huge DMC supporter and the reason he was showcased so much this year? Wouldn't it be a good thing for McFadden? I think Bush going somewhere would really make DMC a top 5 guy! (and staying healthy!)

AJ Mass
  (11:16 AM)

I think it's clear that DMC is better than Bush, and an honest evaluation of all talents will prove that out. But if the coach is playing DMC just because the owner says so, the play calling is not going to be as favorable to him as if they truly believe.

Eric (Chicago)

Cutler has an MCL tear but the severity unknown. Jack Youngblood played on a broken leg and Donovan McNabb pushed off on a broken ankle. Man up!

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

Man up, schman up! Bears inserted Hanie during the 3rd, preventing -- by rule -- Cutler from any manning up.

Zack (okc)

How do you think the signings of Manny and Damon effect Sean Rodriguez's playing time this year?

AJ Mass
  (11:21 AM)

If anything, I think this might take some ABs away from Desmond Jennings -- or at the very least, take off some pressure to "be" Carl Crawford out of the gate.

Will (WV)

Thoughts on Danny Espinosa this year? I'm thinking of just waiting until late in the draft to target him for my 2b.

AJ Mass
  (11:23 AM)

A lot of 2B around this season... he should be there for you... not entirely sure I'd hang my hat on him though. Way down on my personal list.

BJ (Indiana)

James Starks looks like the real deal...do you see a Thunder and Lightning situation in GB next year?

AJ Mass
  (11:25 AM)

Assuming Grant is back and healthy, he'll get the bulk of the work -- but gone are the days where RBs will get 30 carries each week. The Steven Jackson's of the world are becoming dinosaurs... 60-40 split would be my guess.

Joe (Pittsburgh)

I agree...luckily for DMC and his potential owners I think Hue Jackson believes (I cross my fingers!) lol

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

I heard the announcement on my car radio and kept thinking they hired Wolverine as the new coach... Now that would have been interesting!

Mitch (Baltimore)

Is Josh Hamilton to risky to be a keeper?

AJ Mass
  (11:27 AM)

Too risky? No. But he is risky. Healthy and playing 150 games he's top 5. But odds are he plays closer to 120 -- which quite frankly could still net you top 5 value. That's how good he is when he's good. But in an H2H league, you have to brace for not having him for long stretches.

Mitch (Baltimore)

How will Jacoby Ellsbury do this season? And should I keep Ellsbury over ARod?

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

I'd keep A-Rod simply because the botttom drops out at 3B very quickly, and there are always OF to be had. It's not that I don't like Jacoby... but the addition of Crawford tips the scale to Carl, whereas last year I gave the slight edge to Ellsbury.

Mike (San Diego)

So there is a pretty heated debate in my keeper league as to what is a better stat for pitchers: Quality Starts or Wins. What's your take?

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

QS is much more palatable to me. Let's face it -- your guy pitches 7 and allows one hit, and his team doesn't score -- why should he not get some fantasy value for that? At least QS is something he actually accomplished.

Jon (Merrick)

Do you think Phil Coke can make the transition to starter?

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

I'm not 100 sure he stays as a starter. It's simply easier to prepare for that eventuality in the spring and then place him back into the pen than to suddenly need him in the rotation without having prepped him for it. My guess is he is an RP when all is said and done.

Mike (San Diego)

Are there any under the radar offseason moves that you think will have big fantasy impact for baseball in 2011?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

Are there any under the radar moves anymore? It's hard for me to take that step back and guess which moves didn't make waves, because to me, they all do. I do think LaRoche in WAS and Hardy in BAL make intriguing draft day picks and I'm looking forward to seeing where Nishioka ends up in the Twins lineup.

Mike (San Diego)

What do you think the Angels logic in their trade was? At this point, it seems like Vernon Wells and Juan Rivera are basically the same player.

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

Disagree wholeheartedly. Wells IMO has improved production over each of last three years and entire Jays team went into the toilet against LHP. No way that virus comes back for another season.

Dave (Boston)

Keep 2 of 3: Rasmus, Pence, and Beckham?

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

I'd lose Gordon. At the very least you can redraft him or get comparable value/talent off the wire.

Mitch (Baltimore)

Will Tim Tebow be a top 10 fantasy qb next year?

AJ Mass
  (11:42 AM)

I'm not convinced Tebow will be in top 2 on his own team... let alone top 10 overall. I exaggerate a bit, but not much.

Steve (SF)

If you don't have your 2nd cup of coffee until 11:00 AM...then when do you have your first? And how many cups to you drink per day?

AJ Mass
  (11:43 AM)

First cup at 8. Second cup at 11 on chat days. Need to be on my toes to confront you scoundrels! I'm far too Cutler-y to brew a second pot.

Mike (MD)

Which fantasy baseball player will steal the most bases this season?

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

If I had to guess, I'd go with Rajai Davis.

chris sneed (irving tx)

AJ how did you feel about the games last night

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

I was entertained. Not sure what you're asking here. I picked both winners, but even a hungry octopus might have done that.

chad (chicago)

who is this year cargo???

AJ Mass
  (11:47 AM)

Nobody. That season is likely not to be duplicated by anyone, let alone a "come from nowhere" type.

Jon (Merrick)

Do you think that the Jets will ever give Greene a relatively full carry load or will they hang onto LT for no reason. Don't you think that Greene needs to get consistent/constant carries to remain an important fantasy option?

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

Makes sense to have two backs, and running LT early in the year keeps Greene fresh come the playoffs -- and vice versa. I think you'll see both stick around, but the seesaw definitely lean towards Shonn.

Manny Ramirez (being Manny)

I didn't know Tampa had a baseball team...

AJ Mass
  (11:50 AM)

Based on the attendance figures, neither does most of West Florida. Most nights it is Dick Vitale and a bunch of fans disguised as seats.

Nelson (Jackson)

With so many teams using RB by commitee and a general de-emphises on running in general especially near the goal line is a RB still a must in the first rd?

AJ Mass
  (11:52 AM)

Not in the first round, but if you have one of the first four or so, you need to take one of the guys who still does fly solo like an AP or CJ2K.

Mitch (Baltimore)

Will the Ravens ever win a Superbowl with Joe Flacco?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

Never say never, but the D is aging and you'll need an upgrade in WR to even make it to the AFC Championships.

Shane (Pearl River LA)

Does the Hornets streak mean anything? Do you see them as a playoff contender? And going anywhere in the playoffs

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

I watch zero NBA. Once they graduate, they are off my radar.

Lizza (Springfield)

Do yo like having quality starts and holds as fantasy stats in baseball?

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

Don't like holds. Now if you want to combine holds + saves in some way, that's fine, but we don't need ANOTHER counting category.

Mike (San Diego)

Will the Chargers ever win a Superbowl with Norv Turner?

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Do we even need the "with Norv Turner" tag?

Mike (PA)

Can we please stop calling him CJ2K...I motion to call him CJ1.3K!

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

Or we could go metric and call him CJ1.8KM, I suppose. Look, he did accomplish a rare feat, so I'm willing to keep the nickname.

Paul (DC)

Which SP would you leave out in a long term keeper league, Grienke, Liriano and Hanson?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

Liriano. You can't look too longterm with pitchers and so I'll roll with my 2011 expectations.

Robert (Enjoying Order)

Mike, You should MOVE to call him CJ1.3K. Then, after a second, we would vote on your motion.

AJ Mass
  (12:02 PM)

My rules of order say I have to stop at Noon, so it's time to adjourn. No second required and not a second too soon. There's the Twitter if you need to reach out, and we'll be back Friday for another hour. Until then, Be Seeing You!
