If a new CBA isn't reached, will the teams hire replacement players, or no because it's a lockout instead of a strike like in the '80s?
No, it would just be a lockout. No replacement players.
Obviously not his number one objective in negotiations, but do you see Jerry Richardson stalling negotiations if the lockout reaches the regular season so the Panthers can get the number 1 pick for a second straight year (Andrew Luck)
No, I think that would be a little crazy to sacrifice an entire season for the whole NFL.
Why had Dom Capers name name come up with respect to any of the offseason coaching interviews? He has done a very good job implementing a new defense with the Packers and is an experienced head coach who has lead a team to the Super Bowl. Is he considered "over the hill" or has he somehow alienated NFL executives?
He's had two chances as a head coach and didn't thrive. He's viewed now as one of those guys who is better off just being a coordinator.
Hey Pat, what are the chances, Carolina trades their first overall pick to accumulate more picks in this years upcoming draft?
It's really easy to talk about trading down. But the fact is, that's hard to do. Who's going to want to trade up? Who wants to take on the contract that a No. 1 overall pick will command if there isn't a rookie pay scale in place? It's a nice thought, but I think it's a long shot.
Pat, For us folks who don't have the NFL Network, is there another way to watch the Senior Bowl? Via internet?
I don't know the answer to this. Anybody able to help Shogun out?
Once the labor situation is resolved, any chance Blount and Williams will have their contracts adjusted to something that resembles their 2010 production?
Eventually, but they'll have some other guys to take care of first to keep them from leaving via free agency.
How much will the CBA play into the tradability of the 1st overall pick? In other words, if a rookie pay scale is introduced, as expected with the new CBA, and the agreement is signed before the draft in April - which is possible, if not likely - does the 1st overall pick the Panthers currently hold become more valuable, and how much so?
If a deal gets done before draft and includes a rookie pay scale, then I think the pick becomes more valuable. Or at least easier to trade because teams wouldn't have to take on a monster contract.
Pat should the bucs mark ingram if he is left at our spot?
I'd love to see that, but I think you need to get a defensive end.
Now that the Packers swiftly ended the NFC south's season, who do you think will win the super bowl? will the title return to its rightful place, or will the bandwagoners in pittsburgh get another one?
My Super Bowl prediction will run next week.
I just read that the franchise tag might still used this offseason even with the whole CBA issue. What players in the NFC South might be franchised if the tag is still in use.
My understanding is they can't franchise anyone unless there is a new CBA.
Cam Newton is having to have a media to show how he has progressed on his NFL QB skillset, his QB coach George Whitfield ( who has worked with Ben Roetholisger), has said he has blown him away with his development...Do you think the Panthers will have a Scout their?
I'm sure they will and I'm sure other NFL teams will too.
Pat, what in the world will you do if there is no football in 2011?
Write about the lockout.
Do you think the Panthers would have considered Jeff Fisher if he were available before Rivera got hired?
No, I think they wanted to go with a first-time head coach. Fisher's an excellent coach. But I think they wanted someone fresh to carry out the building process.
Does the NFC sout have two of the most promising franchises in the NFL in Tampa and Atlanta? Not to mention we have NO. Impressive, huh?
Yep and don't forget the trend in NFC South is that no team stays on the bottom for long. If history is any indicator, Carolina could bounce right back into the mix.
Pat,let's pretend you're the GM of the Carolina Panthers, who are you taking at no.1 in the draft. I know theres the combine and all the other evaluation processes, but who do you think would help the team tthe most?
I'd take Fairley. Think that would go a long way in solidifying the defense. Then, they can work on offense with everything else.
Do you think someone like Blaine Gabbert could rise to the #1 pick by draft time?
Think it's at least possible. Seeing some mocks now we're he's going third or fifth. It's not that much of a jump from there to No. 1. If he has good workouts, I think it's entirely possible.
Pat, what's your take on the Jeff Fisher firing?
Kind of like the John Fox thing. In the NFL, you can stay in one place too long and wear out your welcome.
PY,Mark Dominik said the Bucs won't be stuck on just a DE in the 1st. What would you consider the second greatest need, and who would that pick be replacing? Thanks.
Running back, cornerback, safety and offensive line all could be possibilities. But, if there is a decent DE available, I think they go that way.
I think that Carolina could bounce back and be a good team in a year or so because they have plenty of potential. The main needs are QB, TE, DT and FS. What do you think?
If they could get solid QB play, they'd be competitive right away. Still plenty of talent elsewhere on that team.
Pat are the Owners and players don't understand that if they will be a lockout that the fans will be very mad at the Owners and players
If it happens, fans should be mad at the owners and the players.
Has there been any more word on the mood of Steve Smith, and his intentions for next season?
Nothing, all quiet so far. He did meet with Chudzinski, but that's all I've heard.
What do you think of Damon and Manny coming to town? These are probably the most exciting sports signings in Tampa since Gruden or Keyshawn a while back.
If it were five years ago, I'd be a lot more excited.
hey pat, whats a bigger need for saints this offseason, d-line or lb?
I say D-line.
PY, have you heard anything about compensatory picks and who is getting what?
Not yet. They usually come out with them at the owners meeting in March.
Pat what are the chances that the panthers try to trade for Chris Harris .Harris used to play for Ron Rivera in Chicago .And Chris Harris was a fan favorite in Carolina.
I don't think safety is a huge need. Besides, they got rid of Harris in the youth movement. Don't see them changing course.
Pat, any word on Ricky Proehl becoming Carolina's WR Coach?
Just know that he interviewed for it. Haven't heard of any decision yet.
Any holidays plans in Paris, Pat? First drink is on me!
Maybe the Paris in Las Vegas.
Any chance of moving B. Ruud to OLB. I think he would be an upgrade. And in our scheme he would then warrant the paycheck he wants. Any reason you know of why this wouldnt work. May also help the pass rush keeping one of the other olb's as a 3/4 pass rusher.
Could work. But look at it from another side: Maybe that's not what Ruud wants. Maybe he sees himself in the middle somewhere else.
What's the biggest need for the bucs after DE? S or OL?
DE all the way.
I seen on alot of websites where there is alot of interest in D. Williams. Some say that we will not try to resign him, cause management likes Swart & Goodson... Some speculate a sign and trade.. What is the likelihood we will see him again in a Panthers uniform?
I disagree. I think Williams will be back with the Panthers.
What defensive end do you think the bucs should select?
From what I've seen, read and heard so far, I'd say Adrian Clayborn. But a lot depends on what the teams ahead of the Bucs do.
Even when the Panthers were a competitive team, they were always conservative and never really tried to be pass-first like most of the elite teams in league. Do you think with Fox gone they will try and build a more balanced team?
Yes, I think they'll definitely try to be more balanced. There's a realization throughout the organization that you have to be able to throw the ball.
if there is a lockout, let's say for the first 4 games, how does the scheduling work? Will the teams we play be re-adjusted so that we play similar teams as the rest of the division or do they just pick up where it left off?
Hmmm, that's one I don't know the answer for. Hope it doesn't come to that. My guess still is they'll get something done by start of the regular season.
Hey Pat, big fan and daily reader of your blog. Have you heard anything on Rejus Benn on how he's rehabbing his knee injury?
Yeah, Dominik talked about him at Senior Bowl the other day. He's progressing but still faces lengthy rehab.
I think if the Saints don't get a RB soon that Drew Brees is going to need a shoulder replacement.....
Good line!!! And I agree.
Hey Pat, if it were up to you, what would you do with the Panthers' QB situation in 2011? I'd like to see Moore get another shot but I know that will never happen. But at least he's proven that he CAN play well in this league, which Jimmy hasn't.
Not saying this is what Panthers will do, but it's what I would do if I were them: Go get Kevin Kolb.
pat read in one of your blogs that loomis said brees was a priority and yet when asked about bush he didnt really have much to say on that. do you think saints should read something into that or just to earlly to tell?
Think the Bush situation will depend a lot on CBA getting done. There are ways to restructure Bush and keep him, but don't think anything will happen until there is a CBA deal.
Saints wanna trade for Stewart? :)
That would be an interesting fit. Saints fans, what do you think of that one?
Thanks. Any chances you want to switch places? Being in Tampa sounds mighty fine compared to 30's and snow
Not a chance. I grew up a little North of Reading and have no desire to go back at this time of the year. I'll be up there in the summer though.
PY, the long and all but forgotten Kareem Huggins was injured very early. What is the likelihood he is back next season? He looked very promising before his injury.
Huggins did look promising. But I don't think you can say for sure he's the real deal based just on that.
Could a backfield of Chris Ivory, Lynell Hamilton, and Reggie Bush get the job done for an entire season? My gut says no.
My gut would tend to agree with you.
What position do the Falcons need to address most on D this offseason?
Gotta be a DE.
I think the Bucs resign Joseph. What say you kind sir?
Agree, he's too good a player to let go. With him and Penn, you have the nucleus of a good offensive line. And having an offensive line to protect Freeman is very important to that franchise.
Why is the CBA deal taking so long? What does each side want? And when do you see them reaching a deal.
Wow, too long to give you full answer here. Let's summarize and say the one thing both sides want is more money. I think there will be a lockout that will run through most of the offseason. But I think something will get done before or right around training camp time. Just my guess.
That was my thinking as well. So how do you think Cal DE Cameron Jordan would fit into our system. The way it's shaping up at the Senior Bowl, he won't be on the board that late, but what if?
If he's there, grab him. But, like you said, not sure he'll be there for Falcons.
If TG does not retire, isn't his contract up with the Falcons and would the Falcons resign him?
Correct, they would have to re-sign him.
Pat, some of my fellow Indiana Bucs fans are coming down for a game this coming season. What month would you say is the weather perfect? I have heard the weather there in September can be a bit brutal.
September is usually still very hot. I'd suggest late October/early November.
Any news on possible new stadiums for the Saints and Falcons in the future? I have heard a lot about a new stadium for the Falcons within the next 10 years.
Saints are locked in for a long time and the Superdome is going through another round of improvements. Falcons have been making noise about wanting a new stadium and they are serious. But I don't think there will be any progress on that until after the CBA gets done.
Hearing recently about a new stadium for the Falcons in the foreseeable future why exactly do the Falcons need a dome stadium in the first place? It doesn't get that cold in Atlanta to begin with, same with New Orleans.
True, but the domed stadium assures other events like SEC Championship Game, Final Fours, etc.
Pat as always we appreciate your blog, you tell it like it is. Do you see the Saints making Brees a top paid QB in this league?
Yep, that's the only thing to do there. It's the right thing and the obvious thing.
Hey Pat...do u see Caddy staying Tampa next year? Or is he now considered a clunker?
Hate to say it because I respect Caddy as much as any player in the league, but I think he is near end of the road.
is jeriuos norwood out in atl
I'm pretty sure that will be the case.
Hamilton, it's not so much the cold as the hot. New Orleanians would still cram together in 100+ degree heat with 90 % humidity to see the Saints, but it would be beyond miserable.
True and Atlanta also has some days like that.
Pat, in my opinion, taking Gabbert first this year would be stupid, you dont take a QB #1 just because you feel you need one, when in reality he may not warrant the pick. I think you go with Fairley and obtain a vetran to compete with Clausen, than next year if the Panthers are in the same position in the next draft, the QB's in it will be much better, in both Luck, Barkley, and Jones.
Definitely some sense in that. Like I said, I'd like to see them get Kolb.
Do you think the Bucs need a vteran QB backup or do you think Johnson is good enough? I like him because he throws a good ball and is quite elusive. I hate it however when they run the wildcat because i believe Freeman is too good to be wasting opportunities for him to make big plays. Johnson too is still quite raw.
I would like to see them get a real backup. And I'd scrap the wildcat for the reason you just said -- when you have a real QB, you don't need gimmicks and you don't take the ball out of his hands.
Sure, we'll trade Stewart for Brees.
Sounds like a deal.
are you going to the superbowl this year, even though a nfc south will not be repesented?
No, I'm sitting this one out. I've been to 16 or 17, so it's not a bad thing to stay home and be able to enjoy it like a fan for a change.
Pat, Falcons have some keys going into FA this offseason, particularly on our O-line, with Dahl, Clabo, and Blalock all set to become FAs. They were all key to helping pave the way for Turner to lead the NFC in rushing yardage, and kept Ryan pretty clean all season. I believe our line was 3rd best in sacks allowed. and they have been playing together now for 3 years as a unit, and that consistency and continuity cannot be overlooked. with all of that said, it doesn't seem likely that we will bring all of them back, so who do you think we will re-sign?
Think Clabo is the one they'd like to keep most. Remember, they drafted two linemen this past draft to prepare for this. But I could see them also keeping Dahl if the price is right.
How does trading for Kolb, considering the cost, make sense for the Panthers? He is 28, and will demand at least one 1st rounder.
We'll see about the price tag being a first-rounder.
The Saints need a RB That can kick fieldgoals and get after the QB....
I think Bobby Bouchet is available and he's a local guy!!!
Do you think Saints will resign Pierre Thomas? He is the most complete back on the roster and a very good locker room guy.
Don't think so. I think relationship with he and the coaching staff got a little strained this year.
The Saints would be vastly improved if they would just go get a reliable RB. Correct?
Absolutely, a dependable RB would be a big lift for that whole team.
True or False? If Nick Goings comes back to the panthers, all their promblems will be solved?
Add Karl Hankton to the mix and I'll go with "true".
Mama says Pat Yasinkas and da foosball is da' devil.
Haha!!! All right, let's end it there. Thanks to all for stopping by.
