Chat with Nick Friedell

Nick Friedell
  (1:40 PM)

What's going on everybody. Sorry for the delay. I'm coming at you live from the Berto. Let's get this chat rolling ...

Darrell (Oshkosh, WI)

Nick, you seriously called it about Rose being a starter for the All-Star game...good showing! What shooting guards are we looking at if there happens to be a trade in the upcoming weeks ahead? Could we land a Redick or Mayo?

Nick Friedell
  (1:46 PM)

Ah, the shooting guard question. Let's get to it right away. The Bulls couldn't trade for Redick even if they wanted to this year because they made an offer to him that the Magic matched. I still don't think the Bulls have enough to land Mayo, even though the Grizz may be willing to move him even more after his suspension. Forget Rip Hamilton unless the Pistons buy him out. Courtney Lee would be a good option, but I don't know if the Bulls have enough to land him either. That leaves players like Anthony Parker, Qunetin Richardson as possibilities still. Not exactly the most exciting options in the world. We'll see what GarPax decides to do.

Brian Scalabrine (Chicago)

Am i more of a fan favorite than my teammate Derrick (ALMIGHTY) Rose?!

Nick Friedell
  (1:47 PM)

You're cool Scal, but nobody is more popular in Chicago right now than Mr. Rose.

Joe (Chicago)

Nick, do you think this Bulls team can be title contenders in the next few years (or this year) without a major upgrade at the 2 guard?

Nick Friedell
  (1:47 PM)

Nope. They need to find a productive two to have a solid chance to win the ring.

dave c (buffalo grove, il)

hey nick the pick, where do you see us in after the all star break?

Nick Friedell
  (1:48 PM)

I think the Bulls will end up being the 3 seed in the East. Maybe 4 if Orlando gets going.

Jack (Chicago)

How do you think the Bulls will fare trying to gaurd Dwight tonight with a vetaran center like kurt Thomas?

Nick Friedell
  (1:49 PM)

Thomas is a better option than a lot of guys because he's seen everything there is to see in the league. Everyone struggles against Howard, but Thomas should be able to hold his own.

Lewie (Southside of Chicago)

Nick, whats the good word on Noah? is his physical and endurance still good? and whats a realistic timetable for him coming back?thanks buddy

Nick Friedell
  (1:51 PM)

Noah is feeling great. He gets the cast off Monday and should be able to start practicing (non-contact) soon thereafter. He wants to try to get back before the break, but I think it's realistic to think he'll be ready to go by the end of February.

Mike (Southside Chi)

How can you score me some courtside seats Nick?

Nick Friedell
  (1:51 PM)

Mike, Find Gar at the game and talk to him.

BeeTee (Chicago)

Were you able to watch shoot around this morning? Is Derrick playing tonight?

Nick Friedell
  (1:53 PM)

The media can't watch practices or shootarounds. Derrick said he is feeling better but he wants to see how he warms up before the game. My guess is that he will try to play.

Darius (Chicago)

Does Omer speak much/any English? Does he ever speak to the media?

Nick Friedell
  (1:55 PM)

Omer speaks fine English according to his teammates. It's just that he is uncomfortable talking to the media still. I don't blame him. I would be to if I was thousands of miles away from home in a different country.

Josh (Chicago, IL)

Hey Nick, isn't the Bulls best option to hang tight until 2011 free agency? With all of the good SG's available (Jason Richardson, Michael Redd, J.R. Smith, etc), the Bulls best move is to roll with this line-up...right?

Nick Friedell
  (1:57 PM)

That's what I think, unless a deal just falls in their lap. The Bulls are in great position right now. Deng's contract may be a little high but he's playing great. Other than that, they don't really have a bad deal on the books. With all the uncertainty regarding the CBA, the Bulls may just decide to wait to make a move.

Scott (Loop)

How do you feel about James Johnson being sent down? When do you expect we will see him back up?

Nick Friedell
  (1:58 PM)

It's the right move for this reason: He wasn't going to play anytime soon in Chicago. I think he'll be back in the next few weeks, but I don't know if it will make a difference. I don't see him cracking Thibs' rotation this year.

braedan (Syracuse)

Is D. Rose the best PG in the league in your opinion? I know you watch the Bulls every night, but doesn't he have to improve his defense to be the best?

Nick Friedell
  (1:59 PM)

Derrick still has some areas where he could improve his game -- but who is playing better than he is right now? Nobody.

Oscar B. (Chicago, Il)

Nick whats up man?... what do you think about tonights game ?..

Nick Friedell
  (2:00 PM)

Nothing surprises me anymore with this Bulls team. They could win by 10 and I wouldn't be shocked. I just don't think they have enough to shut down Howard.

Ryan (Bloomington Indiana)

Nick, do you think the Bulls could package Deng and Taj and two first round picks for Melo?

Nick Friedell
  (2:01 PM)

Ah, the Melo question. I was wondering when it would pop up today. No, I don't think that would work. Like I've been saying, I think Melo only wants to play in NYC.

Paul (Nomran, OK)

Any word on if the Bulls are looking to add Julius Peppers to the squad now that the Bears season is over?

Nick Friedell
  (2:02 PM)

HA. Why not? Thibs is always looking for someone who can set a good pick and hit an open jumper. Why do you think he signed Kurt Thomas?

Jan (madison and wells)

Do you see Brewer taking over the starting spot from Bogans anytime soon?

Nick Friedell
  (2:03 PM)

Nope. For better or worse, Thibs is comfortable with Bogans in that spot.

Alex (Chicago)

Are you as surprised as I am at how well Thomas has played? He's a Brad Miller that plays better D and has some post moves.

Nick Friedell
  (2:05 PM)

Thomas has been awesome for the Bulls. People are lying, teammates included, if they said they thought Thomas could play this many minutes for this long and be this good. Without Thomas, the Bulls would have been in a lot of trouble.

Brian (Wheaton)

Nick do you see D Rose being moved to 2 guard in the next couple years if the Bulls are unable to surround him with a quality 2. Both Lebron and Wade started thier careers at the point. I think when Rose is in his prime he could consistently lead the league in scoring like IVERSON

Nick Friedell
  (2:08 PM)

Not right now. I think he enjoys being a point guard and is very comfortable in that role. Maybe much longer down the road it's a possibility, but not right now. The Bulls love where he's at and so does he.

Pete (Peoria,IL)

Nick, why do you feel the Bulls lack assets to acquire Courtney Lee? He is wasting away on Houston's bench behind Kevin Martin. Wouldn't they be willing to accept JJ and a first rounder (I would even offer the charlotte pick) in exchange for Lee?

Nick Friedell
  (2:14 PM)

The question really isn't if the Bulls have the assets to pick up Lee as much as are they willing to give up the ones they do have to get him? In order to land him it would probably take Taj or Omer a first round pick and possibly something else. Do you do that deal if you're Gar? Are the Rockets really even interested in moving him right now? It doesn't seem like it, but I'm sure everything will work itself out over the next few weeks before. One thing you can forget is Johnson as a trade asset. He has no value right now around the league.

Carlos Boozer (Chicago, IL)

What are my chances to sneak into an all star game this year?

Nick Friedell
  (2:16 PM)

Only if someone else gets hurt.

Nate (Chicago)

What are the chances the Bulls go undefeated in the division? How often does that happen?

Nick Friedell
  (2:20 PM)

I would be absolutely stunned if it happened. The Central is awful, but anyone can have a bad night. Come on, the Bulls already lost to the Nets this year.

Spicy foods (Rose's fridge)

Nick Friedell
  (2:21 PM)

Public notice Chicagoans -- If you see Derrick around and he orders the spicy chicken, don't let him eat it.

Michael (San Francisco)

Nick, I am in the camp that thinks we should wait until next year to move for a 2 guard, as Korver, Brewer, and Watson will be expiring contracts because their 3rd years are not guaranteed. I know Thibs likes Bogans, but isn't the answer this year just to give his minutes to Brewer and Korver?

Nick Friedell
  (2:24 PM)

That's what I think -- but Thibs thinks differently. He's likes having Korver and Brewer coming off the bench. On a side note, I don't think Bogans has played particularly bad of late. He's actually made a couple shots. Plus, he's still only in there about 15 minutes a game -- never at crunch time.

Kevin Martin (Houston, TX)

Hey Nick, why don't the bulls try and go after me? I would love to play with this new reviving Bulls and hep the scoring burden off D.Rose.

Nick Friedell
  (2:24 PM)

Way, way too much left on your deal, Kevin.

Clay (Des Plaines, IL)

Derrick Rose has two stomach ulcers......I've never had one myself, and I was wondering is this a problem that can easily be fixed or can you play with the pain, as long has he its "better" spicy food I guess.

Nick Friedell
  (2:26 PM)

He's taking medication. He seems to be fine except for the fact he hasn't eaten solid food in a few days. The Bulls will keep a close eye on it, but I think Derrick will bounce back.

Sebastian (Chicago)

I know you said that the Bulls were still either a year or a player away from being a legit contender in the East. At the halfway point, do you still feel that way? I think DRose's game, plus 2 healthy bigs, is elevating this team to elite status. You also have to think that Thibs is going to tighten their playing style to adjust w/ the halfcourt style of the playoffs.

Nick Friedell
  (2:29 PM)

I still feel that way. Look, the Bulls have been great this year. They're playing extremely well and their future is very bright ... but, this season, I don't know how they can get to the Finals without a viable two guard who can take some of the scoring pressure off Rose. You make a great point about Thibs' defensive schemes in the playoffs (they'll be even tighter), but I still think they're a year or two away.

justin (IL)

I hate when people say keith bogans only gets ~15 minutes a game. He should be getting none considering he offers nothing to our offense and he isn't a defensive stalwart. The only thing we can hope Bogans does is not kill us. Nick how is this guy one of Kentucky's leading scorers?

Nick Friedell
  (2:32 PM)

Who gets ripped more in Chicago right now? Jay Cutler or Keith Bogans? Cutler probably gets ripped by more people, but he still has supporters. Does anyone out there like Keith? He's actually a good guy, for whatever that's worth.

Kevin (Boise)

What is the ceiling for the Bulls this season in your opinion if they keep their roster intact and don't trade for a SG?

Nick Friedell
  (2:33 PM)

2nd round and out.

Nick Friedell
  (2:34 PM)

Quick side note: The Maury Povich shows where he comes out and says, "YOU ARE NOT THE FATHER!" just kill me. I feel so bad for those people, but why do they keep coming on the show? That show is blaring right now in the lobby at the Berto Center.

Tim (Northbrook)

Come on Nick, who cares that he is a good guy? (Bogans) He is bad at basketball, the 15 min he gets is a complete joke.

Nick Friedell
  (2:35 PM)

Agreed. I don't think he should play either. I'm just saying he's a good guy.

Mike (Vegas)

How would Jimmer be on the Bulls? Do you think it would be possible to get him in the draft? Could he provide scoring off the bench?

Nick Friedell
  (2:36 PM)

The Jimmer's stock is rising by the day. I don't think he'll be around when the Bulls make their pick in the draft.

D. Holmes (Chicago.)

Nick, I like the one's where the father's dance after they find out it isn't them.

Nick Friedell
  (2:37 PM)

HA. Somebody has made a YouTube sensation out of some of those episodes.

Nick Friedell
  (2:39 PM)

All right everybody ... I am out of here. I will talk to you guys next week from San Francisco. If you get out to any of the games this week come by and say hello. Talk to everybody later.
