Good afternoon from New York, site of last night's Knick victory over the Heat. Quite a game out of Landry Fields, and as I wrote after the game last night, it can only boost his trade value. As so, onward we plunge into another Melocentric (probably) Knicks chat. ...
can a melo-amare combo really work in the pressures of New york? also, in crunch time who gets the ball in the 4th quarter?
Both players have the personalities to thrive in New York. They are not guarded in their comments, they are not afraid of pressure. And in crunch time, I'll tell you this: You won't have four guys sagging in on Amar'e like they do now if he gets the ball in the high post.
chris, there are alot of conflicting stories out there. Some outlets are saying that the knicks are basically waiting on denver to try to make a deal, and others are saying the knicks are standing pat and not being aggressive. what is the knicks stance on the melo front?
They are being diligent, but they are not driving the bus here. Denver is. And right now, the Nuggets are having some success on their current Eastern swing, which has put things into a holding pattern.
Hey Chris! If Anthony does not agree to sign with any other team but the Knicks, and if Walsh tells Denver they can only have ONE of the Fields/Gallo/Chandler trio (along with throw-ins Randolph, Walker, maybe Williams, and Curry's expiring), will Denver concede and do that trade? Or do they hold their breath and see what happens over the summer when the new CBA comes into play?
If they could only get one of the Fields/Gallo/Chandler threesome, I think they would hang onto Melo and take their chances in the playoffs with him. They cannot do a deal that doesn't give them back something approximating equal value.
If we have to give up two out of the three (Fields, Gallo, Chandler) which two... I think Fields is the keeper!! I understand Gallo and Chandler seem to be better players now, MAN!!! This kid has it all, and actually I think he has alot more.. I think he plays his part right now, but the kid lead the Pac 10 in scoring!!! I think he has the goods!
As I write last night, Fields is playing like a lottery pick. But if you have to give up two of the three, I believe the Knicks would prefer those two to be Gallinari and Fields. But I keep hearing Denver is not enamored with Gallo, which is why I see Chandler being in the deal somehow (possibly routed to a third team) if it goes down.
Chris, I think you wait to try to get Melo as a FA. I am sorry but if they are not willing to do bill walker, anthony randolph/1st rounder, wilson chandler, and eddy curry, then i am not making the deal. Giving up gallinari or fields in any deal cant happen.
The problem is, if you don't do the trade before the deadline, it will be very tricky to both sign Chandler (restricted free agent) and clear enough cap space to make a max offer to Anthony. Knicks would have to move a player or two (Turiaf, Mozgov, Gallinari) to clar enough room, depending on what Chandler's market value would be under the new CBA.
Hey Chris. Do you think this Knicks team (without Carmelo Anthony) has a legitimate chance to go deep in the playoffs?
No. They'd be lucky to win two games in the first round.
So, when is the Knicks deadline for trying to do a deal for Melo (i.e. the date they give up trying to get Melo and go after a big man and/or PG)?
3 p.m. on Feb. 24. If they don't get him, I don't see them doing anything oher than a very minor move if they can find someone who still believes in Roger Mason Jr.
"eddy curry clause" last week you said (There already is an Eddy Curry clause that requires players to be in good enough shape to play "skilled basketball")why have the knicks not attempted to release curry and not pay him based on him not being in shape to play skilled ball?
Because his salary is useful to them in making the trade they are trying to make. Without Curry's $11.3 million, they cannot match salaries with the Nuggets in a Melo deal.
How about the fact that Melo isn't really very special? Wouldn't they just be better off keeping the guys they've got?
Greg, the guy is special. He's a top 10 talent in this league, and those guys are very seldom available. With the guys they have, they are capable of making the playoffs and getting smoked in the first round. With Melo-Stoudemire to build around for the net four-plus years, they would be a legitimate contending team year in and year out.
What is taking so long for a deal to get done? As far as I'm concerned everyone is available but felton and Amare?
Again, this is being done on Denver's timetable. Nothing the Knicks can do to speed up the process.
I used to watch Anthony Randolph in GSW, and I know that he can make some dumb decisions on the court. Behind the scenes, is Randolph in the doghouse or is he just not that good? his skill set seems to fit in well with NYK.
I have seen him play in practice, and the guy has unbelievable athleticism. What hurts him most is his shot selection, and then you have the fact that D'Antoni only oes eight deep, and Randolph is most valuable to the Knicks right now as an insurance policy behind Amar'e and as a trade chip. There is no need to play him now and risk him getting injured, which would foul up their trade plans.
Say we don't get Melo' (and Denver hangs on to him), do we go after someone like Sessions or are we still in "Save The Cap Space" mode for the upcoming summer?
Still got to save the cap space, so no long money comes aboard in any second-tier deal.
What is up with Felton? Mini-slump or was he playing over his head?
He has never been relied upon before to be such a high-volume shooter, and you have to believe he minuts are catching up with him. He really fell off a cliff last night shooting-wise, but he had been under 50 percent from the field in 9 of 10 games before that.
Nice to see you back in chat Chris. Any chance the Knicks could send Chandler over for Nene? I heard Nene doesn't want to sign in Denver. Denver can match an offer for Chandler. If the Knicks get Melo, who could play center? Doesn't solve that problem... and they will be capped out
If they get Melo, they'll continue to use Stoudemire at the 5 more so than Turiaf. D'Antoni sees Turiaf as a 20-minute per night player.
Hearing that a Melo-Amare combo would never contendo for a title because neither focuses on defense. You agree?
Sort of. But it makes them a better offensive team, and D'Antoni is always about outscoring rather than outdefending the opposition.
Chris recently you have been consistently late with your chats! what's the deal?
Dude, there must be a lag or something. I was in here at 1:59 p.m. pushing the button. Haven't been late to a chat all season.
As Magic Johnson said in MSG yesterday that if you're a star like Carmelo who wants to be somewhere and you know you're going to be a free agent, you're going to make that happen. Do you agree with that notion?
Yes I do. A player of Melo's caliber only has the free agency leverage card to play once in his career, and it is his time to play it as he best sees fit. LeBron and Bosh did it last year. It is part of the business.
Chris, is Denver willing to risk Melo going FA and getting nothing for him? They aren't going to win the title, so wouldn't they be better off getting something for him now no matter how well they are playing?
I have been hearing since Ocober that they do not want to end up in the same situation Cleveland and Toronto found themselves in. That is why they have been looking at Melo trades all season instead of focusing on the present and whether they can win the West.
What do you think the Knicks think of Gallo right now? What does the rest of the league think of him?
The Knicks are pleased that he has been driving the ball more and getting to the line, although they'd like to see him do it more consistently, and they'd like him to muscle up a little more so be can be a better finisher around the basket. He is still very young (22) and should continue to improve. And it goes without saying that his shooting stroke is pretty darn nice.
Do you feel that the knicks need a backup PG? I see Toney Douglas developing into a poor-man's Jason Terry, and that we could use another true backup PG...White Chocolate off of waviers for the rest of the year, perhaps? Thoughts?
Don't se J-Will as a viable option. Now, if you want to talk about Anthony Carter as a throw in ...
I don't see how they can give up Chandler and Fields in the same deal. Someone has to play the 2.
Shawne Williams could play the 2. Or, if Gallinari is in a deal instead of Chandler, Chandler can play the 2. Douglas also plays 2.
If a third team is brought into the 'Melo deal, what team do you think it would most likely be?
Indiana as the team giving up a pick for AR.
Chris, with the great chemistry they have between the young guys and Amar'e, why shouldn't the Knicks just continue to low ball Denver (only give one of Gallo/Fields/Chandler) and Denver either takes it or they wait for Melo as FA in summer. If they have to renounce Wilson or get creative, it's still better than getting rid of 2 of the young 3, right?
At the end of the day, the Knicks have to ask themselves if they are prepared to let this opportunity slip away. But if the asking price from the Nuggets is just too high, they see waiting until the summer as an adequate fallback.
Chris, Do you think eddy Curry will ever lose his weight and play proffesionally again?
Yes. 7-footers are difficult to come by, and second chances for 7-footers are easier to come by than they are for shorter guys. Look at Tyson Chandler, for instance. A year ago he looked finished. Now he is playing like a beast for Dallas -- even making his FTs. So I think Curry will be in the league somewhere next season.
"If they could only get one of the Fields/Gallo/Chandler threesome, I think they would hang onto Melo and take their chances in the playoffs with him. They cannot do a deal that doesn't give them back something approximating equal value."------------------Chris, the Nuggets are not in position to get "equal value", considering Melo can refuse to sign an extension (w/Denver or anyone else in a rental situation), therefor do not have the power. Yes, it might be there timetable, but their time and options are running out. Knicks need to be patient and if they make the trade, give up little - the pressure is on Denver.
I said "approximating" equal value. They have to be able to sell any Melo deal to their fan base as a deal they can use as part of a rebuilding blueprint. If they hang onto him, they can still sign-and-trade him in the summer if those deals are still doable under the new labor agreeent.
Chris, I've been reading its not a matter of "if" 'melo is going to the knicks but "when". Do you see the Knicks trading at the deadline for him or getting him in the summer?
More likely at the deadline than over the summer. I'd put it at 60-40.
Why don't NY fans see that the players they love so much (Fields and Gallo) have inflated numbers b/c of the system? As a Nugs fan I'd rather keep Melo and try to make a playoff run than trade for roll players. To me the only move is the NJ deal or keep Melo.
Knicks fans love Fields because he is a hustle player, he's smart and he rarely makes mistakes. That would make him an asset on any team and in any system.
Does Eddy Curry even care or is he happy just collecting his paycheck? How can anyone make that much money and not be working his butt off to get on the court?
Like Randolph, the Knicks have no need to run him out there and risk him getting injured. It would complicate thir master plan to a huge degree.
Does Timofey Mozgov find his way back into the rotation? Read somewhere that he's been practicing better and the Knicks desperately need more size and rebounding. Can this kid give it?
I asked D'Antoni a question along those lines a couple days ago, and let's just say he did not leave me holding my breath awaiting the next Timofey sighting. He is no more than an insurance policy behind Turiaf at this point.
Need to cut this week's chat off at the 45-minute mark. Have extra Daddy Day Care duties today. Will be back next Friday to chat Knicks once again. A good weekend to all.
