Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks, it's time for our weekly chat. New notebook is up, schedule is updated, rankings are updated and there are plenty of news stories. Also, a new blog will be up this afternoon, so let's get to it!

Ben (Boston)

Any news on Paul Williams' next move?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Nothing definite but he could be back on HBO on April 30. HBO is also considering buying Wladimir Klitschko-Dereck Chisora on that day. It would not shock me if they had a live Paul Williams fight with the delay from Germany of the heavyweight fight on the same telecast.

Julio (DFW)

Why aren't we hearing more from Kotelnik at 140. He gave Marcos a tough fight and won, and many think he deserved the nod against Alexander.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Kotelnik has talked about moving up to 147 but nothing very specific.

robb (north andover, ma)

i know everyone will ask...do you think alexander quit? or at least left early thinking he would win rather than fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

I won't call him a flat out quitter like some have. I believe he was severely impacted by the butt. However, the point I have made is that the greatest fighters find a way to overcome the adversity. He could not.

Ben (Boston)

Khan/Bradley - Does it happen or not?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

I think it probably will but it is NOT going to be easy to get it done. Read the top part of today's notebook for a look at some of the issues.

Matt (Boston)

So you rip Haye but at the same time you are ok with Adamek vs McBride? You are so biased.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

See you're a dope. I do not love Adamek-McBride or even like it for that matter. However, I GET IT. Adamek has a signed contract to fight either Klitschko brother in September. He wants to stay active. So I have no beef with him taking a fight against a big, tall opponent whom he will easily defeat in preparation for the championship fight. The Ducker wouldn't sign to fight a Klitschko. Adamek did. HUGE difference.

Julio (DFW)

The undercard is looking pretty good for Mosley/Pac. What chances do you give Arce in a fight with Vasquez? Is Vasquez the real deal or living of a name?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I think Vazquez has tons of potential and he has vastly improved since I saw him in his first few pro fights. I think he would be a big favorite against Arce, but I think it will be an exciting fight it if gets made. Arce always gives it everything and I love watching him fight.

Laz (London)

Dan, please put this to rest. WHO is Khan fighting?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Not done yet. I spoke to Khan about an hour ago. He said there are still several fighters in the running. Among them: Peterson, McCloskey and Murray, he said.

@TheBoxingEmpire (Twitter)

Freaks, we expect a good clean chat. As the King Freak stated last chat, please read today's notebook (front page) before asking redundant questions. You are to follow Dan on twitter @danrafaelespn to keep the latest news. Questions on Bradley-Alexander are fair, but anything below the belt about Mike Tyson returning is considered low. Touch em up and come out when Dan arrives!

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Well done.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Dan, any news on venues for the Super Six Semi-Finals?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Nothing specific yet. I am told the Silverdome has some interest in Froch-Abraham.

Danny (Chicago)

DTM, just wondering... Does Richard Steele still receive massive boos at every fight he works in Vegas?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

He is retired as a referee.

hectorconga (new york City)

Matt from Boston is an idiot...Haye gets ripped for ducking the Klitschko's atleast Adamek is willing to fight them

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Ding, ding, ding! The Ducker fans aren't smart enough to understand that.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

What did Khan say about Prescott ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

He said he "definitely" would fight him in the future but not in the April fight. He said after Bradley. I will believe it when I see it.

Charles (Philly)

Y/N/WC: Did Holyfield quit against Williams?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I believe he did quit.

BANISHMENT (Draft)

WE MAKE OUR FIRST PICK OF THE 2011 DRAFT: WE SELECT MATT FROM BOSTON!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Jeff (Greensboro)

Dan, have you gotten a chance to talk with Merchant or Lampley about HBO losing the Pac fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Yes, I spoke with both of them about it.

Martin (NYC)

If you knew the Bradley/Alexander fight was going to turn out the way it did, would you have traveled out to cold azz Pontiac, MI?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Yes. It was an important fight and I have a job to do.

Rags (NYC)

I looked at the schedule and noticed that almost the entire lineup for 2/18's FNF has changed...are we still going to get Porter & Guerrero that night?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Yes.

darryl p (indianapolis)

any news on berto and ortiz fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Getting there.

Hans, Burlington VT [via mobile]

Dandy Pettitte! I'm at the dentist chatting...hopefully this is less painful than watchin The Latin Fake will be later!

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

LOL! I am very depressed about the retirement today of Andy Pettitte, a player I watched regularly when he pitched at Double-A. He was one of my favorites.

Danny (Chicago)

How about Alexander vs. Ortiz in battle of great talents with no heart!

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

You're as cold as your city.

Frank ((PHX))

Dan, It's been awhile since i've been in a live chat since I work every Friday and have no access to a computer but I always read the transcripts. Well today I'm off and ready to chat w/ the Freaks!! My question is how close is Soto/Antillon from being done?? I think that fight w/ the rest of the card is gonna be a hell of a show!

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

From the folks at Top Rank tell me both sides have verbally agreed to the fight. They need to put it all down on paper.

Henry v Bonner jr (@henrythehook)

Alexander vd Maidana is that fight happening? is Alexander trying to comimt suicide after quiting against Bradley lol

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

It's a fight HBO would like and I know the Alexander camp wants it. Not sure about Maidana but he's not a guy who avoids anyone. They can both make good money for the fight also. I think it's got a good chance of happening.

Steve (NYC)

Any news on who Cedric Boswell would fight if he gets a FNF date?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

What kind of dope are you smoking today?

Justin (Springfield, NJ)

Dan: What's the hold up with Marquez-Morales for April 9th? Do you think it gets done?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

There are issues with Marquez and Golden Boy working out the particulars. I have said from Day 1 this fight is not a done deal. It may get done but it also may not get done. As Richard Schaefer always says, "A done deal is a signed deal." Never more truth to that than in this case.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Was the fight atmosphere as dead in person as it seemed on tv during the Alexander-Bradley fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

It wasn't that bad.

Franco (Leavenworth)

Yo Dan I just got out of prison. 5 years of no chatting blows! But we did talk about boxing in the hole and i thought about you every Friday - Freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

These are my readers.

Rafa (London)

I know there is a storyline there, but would you honestly prefer to watch Khan-Prescott than Khan-Peterson?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

100% yes.

Horn (Vegas)

In a salary cap move, I would like to trade Matt from Boston for Bing from Philly. After the trade, Bing will by cut for salary cap space and advancement of intellect.

Tom (Newport Beach)

What is this EPIX pay channel? I never heard of it?. I'd rather Klitschko show up on ESPN3.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Epix is a premium cable station like an HBO or Showtime. Lots of movies and some specials. Epix has shown, for example, several excellent concerts. I get it on my cable system as part of a package I pay for. It is run by Mark Greenberg, who used to be exec VP of Showtime and was very involved in the network's boxing franchise.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Dan what was the deal with De La Rosa last week? Was he just very rusty from the layoff or nowhere near the fighter people made him out to be?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I have no idea what was wrong with him but he looked absolutely horrible,

Horn (Vegas)

What do you think of Vargas' comeback at 168? Or do you try not to think about it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

It makes me ill to think about. Vargas was as entertaining a fighter as there has been in my time on the beat, but he is done.

Saif (Durham, NC)

What's next for Roy Jones Jr.?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

A Boxing After Dark broadcast in a few weeks.

Trevor (Milwaukee)

If Pavlik comes back on the Pacquiao undercard, who are the TR handlers discussing as super middleweight opponents? I'd say Librado Andrade would be a PERFECT comeback fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

He won't fight anyone that tough in his first fight back. Besides, Andrade is with Golden Boy so forget about that happening.

Alex (San Diego)

I watched Gatti-Rodriguez this week. Gatti was 23 in that fight I believe, and it made me re-think talking myself into believing Alexander is still a young fighter who will learn to handle adversity. Your thoughts on whether heart can be learned?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

That's tricky. It could either way. Sometimes once you quit it gets easier the next time you face a tough spot. Sometimes you learn from it, like Vitali Klitschko did after the loss to Byrd and the huge heart he showed against Lennox Lewis.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

By the way -- last night was the 15th anniversary of the first ever Boxing After Dark on HBO and one of the greatest fights the network has ever shown was the main event: Barrera-McKinney

Lance (San Fernando Valley)

What's next for Antonio Tarver? Any truth to the rumor he takes on David Haye?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I do not know but I do not think Tarver is under serious consideration to fight The Ducker.

J (ATL)

the pavlik return will be on the televised undercard correct?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Yes, it would be.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

On a scale of bad to embarrassingly horrific, how would you rate Mike Dallas Jr's performance last weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

It wasn't horrific, but he did not have a good night. He needed to box, box and box against Lopez. Instead, he got caught up in more of a slugfest and paid the price.

Dylan (Ft. Collins)

True or False: Vargas' comeback is financially driven as his crooked business manager robbed him blind?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Probably money is a big part of it, which is a shame.

Frank (PHX)

Am I the only won looking forward to Rio/Acosta fight in a couple weeks?? Rios is always in exciting fights!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Too bad Acosta isn't.

steven (louisville)

any word on what is next for tavoris cloud?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Nope. Nothing specific.

Jeff (Dearborn, MI)

Can you please clarify your earlier comments on the Silverdome pursuing the Super 6 fight. You said Froch-Abraham, who are not fighting.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

My bad. I meant Froch-Johnson Super Six semi.

Larry Merchant (HBO)

Its no longer Marcos Maidana... Its "Kid Cojones"

DamonJJ (Twitter)

Let's make this clear. We rip Haye for who he fights INSTEAD of a Klitschko. Adamek fights people INCLUDING a Klitschko.

Aaron (MI)

Did Khan confirm that he fired his trainer Alex Ariza (also Paq's trainer)???

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Yes. They are done, he said. He also said it is Freddie's decision on who is his strength trainer.

Gerardo (AZ)

Dan! So many topics this week, where to start... ESPN Deportes says Marquez - Morales was SIGNED Monday. Are they misinformed?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Yes, they are wrong. I keep telling them that. They don't want to listen.

Tomer (New York, NY)

Was the Berto-Aydin purse bid delayed again from the 1/28 date?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

I believe so. I'm waiting to hear back from DiBella on that.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

Can we have a "loser retires" bout between James Toney and Evander Holyfield? Please!

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Toney already knocked him out.

Cristobal (L.A.)

And a kiss for you too, King Freak.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Interesting development with Epix. I'm one of those guys that subscribes to HBO and Showtime just for the boxing. Have you ever heard what percentage of subscribers are "bought" based on the premium network's involvement in boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

I know it's a lot. I'm one of them too. Without boxing, I would cancel both networks.

Razwan (London)

Hi Dan, for the Pac-Mosley press tour how many cities will you go to?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Just the one in Washington, since I live right outside of DC in Northern Virginia.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Just curious, has Manny Steward every seen a fight that didnt go "exactly how he thought it would go" ?????

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

There may have been a fight in 2004 that did not go the way he thought it would. But I do not have confirmation of this. :)

Victor (Chicago)

Did you read that release by Toney saying he was the real world heavyweight champion? Lol talk about delusional.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Toney is not in this reality. It's not even fun to listen to his comments anymore because he isn't even interesting anymore.

CHOPPER (Brooklyn)

James Toney is calling out the "Klitschko Sisters". He is: 1. Broke 2. Deluded 3. Punchy 4. Suicidal, or 5. All of the Above.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Defintely 1, 2 and 3.

Katie (Philly)

Who or what is Austin Trout?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

A junior middleweight who fights for a trashy fake WBA belt this weekend in Mexico against Salul Alvarez's older, slower, not nearly as good brother Rigoberto.

Chris (KC)

Come on Dan, your a reporter, what did Lampley and/or Merchant SAY about losing the Pac fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

That is between us.

victor (north jersey)

you have to tell espn deportes in spanish dan

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

No hablo espanol.

Aaron (MI)

I thought that Shelly Finkel was leaving boxing to pursue another business? Seems like he is still active in boxing. Did I miss something?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

He divested himself of his management agreements, which is what he had done for 30 years. He still serves in an advisory role with the Klitschkos and he now owns part of a promotional company, of which he is CEO. But boxing is only a small part of that company business.

Sean (Plano TX, )

I saw Yuri Foreman on the locale news here visiting a school in Dallas. comes across as a real "mentch"

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Yuri's a terrific guy.

MacDaddy (Philly)

Tito Dantana, who do you have tonight? I am looking to see if Mora has changed at all.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Gotta be honest -- fight does not do much for me. I am tired of Mora and the unfulfilled promises.

Dr. Shawhi (on a house call in MI)

What's next for Andre Dirrell? Does he have any opponent lined up?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

I think he's looking for the name of his doctor.

Galway (Half Pint)

What is the deal with Maidana? He needs to get back into the ring.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Dude just fought like 6 weeks ago. Relax.

Brian (Cerrtios, CA)

Dan - only two more weeks until Donaire vs Montiel!!!! I think Donaire's physical advantages (reach, height) will be too much for the smaller Montiel although I do give him more than puncher chance if he can get inside. Your breakdown?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

I look forward to the fight and I will be ringside for it. I don't view Donaire as smaller. He has been squeezing to make weight for years and remember Montiel came up from flyweight also.

steven (louisville)

what is your opinion of charles hatley as a prospect?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Haven't seen much of him. He's supposedly a big puncher and was a 2008 US Olympic alternate. I will be looking forward to seeing him on ESPN2 tonight. He is supposed to open the show.

Mike (Homer Glen, IL)

Hey Dan. I think you have Lara properly ranked as the #10 JMW. However, am I crazy to think he could beat everyone ranked above him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

He's very talented. The only thing holding his ranking down is the lack of a really good opponent so far.

Mitch (Oakland)

Dan I might be moving to Singapore this summer. I'm going to be chatting to you from 16 hours in the future, approx 6 a.m. Saturday morning for your noon Friday chats.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Better you than me.

Ryan (Worcester, MA)

Dan, you're entitled to your opinion, but every injury is different and you have no idea how bad Alexander's eye was feeling. He took repeated headbutts without quitting. it wasn't until late in the fight that he couldn't continue. As a fight freak i choose to respect the people in the ring.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I didn't say I didn't respect him. But it is fair to question his heart when compared to other fighters who have experienced similar adversity. Simple as that. I know this -- I can't see Diego Corrales or Arturo Gatti not going on after a head butt unless it literally knocked them out. Not all fighters hearts are created equally. I hope it was a learning experience for Alexander.

Oscar De La Hoya (Doing a Jim Lampley Impersonation)

Chow! Chow! Chow! Bang...er...Chow!

Galway (Half Pint)

Ok Dan. I apologize. I hadn't taken my meds yet today......

Finch (UK)

Witter seems to think a deal with Kahn in close to being done, i assume this is nonsense right, he's not even in the mix is he?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I seriously doubt Witter will get the fight. My understanding is that Sky wants no part of Witter and I am told HBO would not approve that fight either.

chris (oklahoma city)

Speaking of the 140lb division, what happened to Urango? Is he ever fighting again? I know Ricardo Torres isn't a 140lb fighter anymore, but what happened to him? Has he even fought since losing to Holt?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Urango's promoter told me, literally, he bought a pig farm in his home country and has not heard from him in forever and can't reach him. Torres retired.

Jay$$ (Chicago)

Dan I drove from Chicago for the fight last week. In the Paris-Augustus fight how bad was the referee? That was probably the worst performance I've seen since Marlon B. Wright in Montreal. What other one's come to mind?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

The referee was horrible in that fight and at least one other I saw him do on the card.

Eric Omaha [via mobile]

Dan, Any truth to the rumor that HBO PPV is picking up the Mayweather v. The State of Nevada so it still has one big name on a PPV card?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Patrick (Mexico)

Dantanio Holmes, Will you vote for Too Sharp when he comes up for the Hall?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Very likely. I will do what I always do -- take a good look at the record and think about it. But Too Sharp was a p4p guy for a long time and an outstanding champion. By the way -- the first world title fight I ever covered was Too Sharp vs. Luis Rolon, which was televised on ABC's Wide World of Sports in something like 1996 or 97.

Ryan (Youngstown)

Dan, a couple of websites have reported Arum negotitating with CBS / Showtime about putting the next Chavez Jr fight on regular CBS. However, I refuse to believe any rumors until you report them via your notebook and/or twitter. Any truth to this?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

I'm sure they have talked about it but at this point there's nothing set as far as I know.

Frank (PHX)

Dan what do you think of Khan's offer now to Peterson for 300k? Is that a fair offer or should Khan be offering more?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Based on the total money in the pot, he probably should get a larger slice of the pie.

Hayemaker (London)

time for Jason Estrada to man up and face me

Martin (Ireland)

Whats your opinions on Paul McCloskey?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Overrated with no resume to speak of.

RJ (Minneapolis)

I'm guessing the Klits are laughing, but if they ever did agree to fight Toney how long do you think he would last? I say 3 rounds tops.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Either Klitschko would crush Toney.

Justin (SC)

Thoughts on Ismayl Sillakh...

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Very good prospect. Top amateur. His upcoming ESPN2 fight with Depaigne is quite interesting to match two great amateurs early in their pro careers.

Disgruntled Janitor (2F Bathroom)

When will we see Berto in the ring with some credible opposition?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Likely he will face Victor Ortiz on April 16.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

If HBO buys Wlad-Chisora, is that only to set up buying Wlad-Adamek in the fall?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Put it this way -- I cannot imagine HBO spending a penny on Wlad-Chisora without an option to also buy the Adamek fight.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

Sam Peter beat Toney twice, fer crissake, decisively the second time. The man is totally delusional and/or desperate calling out the Klitschkos.

Louie (Carlsbad)

If HBO can force Martinez to fight Dzinziruk, why can't they force Khan to fight Prescott?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

HBO is the secondary broadcaster in the case of April 16. Sky in the UK is the lede broadcaster. HBO is basically along for the ride on this fight and payin a much, much smaller fee for the rights to Khan's April 16 fight, which is will show on tape in prime time instead of live.

David Haye (London)

Oliver McCall, you've ducked me for far too long.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, of the issues you mentioned standing in the way of a Khan v Bradley fight, which one will be the biggest hurdle to overcome? Bradleys promotional uncertainty seems like a huge problem.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

That is going to get ugly, the whole Bradley/Shaw thing.

Jim (Fl)

Whatever happened to Jorge Linares???

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

He could be back on the April 9 HBO PPV card Golden Boy is working on.

Ryan (Chicago)

Danimal, Did you get a chance to talk to Andre Dirrell at the Bradley/Alexander card last week?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

No, never even saw him.

John H (Augusta GA)

Is Mark Greenburg from Epix and Ross Greenburg from HBO related?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

No. Marc is berg, Ross is burg.

jon (la)

any news on the love child??

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. But nothing set for him.

Victor (Chicago, Il)

I've seen my Roberto Duran career set which includes most of his lightweight title defenses and to be completely honest I must say he is vastly overrated, I didn't see anything to suggest calling him top 10 one of the best ever. I would rank Pacquiao above him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

You are hilarious.

Luke (Pittsburgh PA)

Go Steelers!

Pink (Water Bottle)

Angulo and Kirkland. Updates please!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Angulo is on ice, nothing new there. Kirkland is supposed to fight March 5 on the off TV HBO undercard, although that is not definite yet.

Bearman (Biggest Little City)

Chris's kiss ... punk move as Kenny put it or "sincere thank you" as Chris put it? I vote punk ..

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Complete punk move.

Aaron (Cincinnati)

Duran overrated....wow, first time I've heard that one

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Our boy must have suffered a head injury before he wrote that comment.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Victor's comment about Duran seems "Bing-ish" to me. Ruling on banishment please?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

I have weighed the idocy of the comment have one thing to say: Banishment, lunch is served!

@DamonJJ (Twitter)

Stop it Freaks! Every negative comment about Toney only raises Haye's interest in him!

Jose Sulaiman (Press Conference)

We are pleased to announce that Tim Bradley shall be appointed the WBC Cranium-boxing super champion emeritus...in exchange for a small sanctioning fee.

Steve (Sac,Ca)

Dano, anything new on a site for Ward/Abraham?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Nothing right now.

RJ (Minneapolis)

What was with Atlas defending Arreola's kiss on FNF?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I have no idea and I was quite surprised.

victor (north jersey)

duran overrated is like saying david haye has a heavyweight legacy

Patrick (Mexico)

Victor: I've read about world war II, and the truth is, it didn't seem like that big of a fight to me. I don't get all the fuss.

Victor (Chicago, Il)

Thanks for all the support, lol. I'm not saying he was terrible or anything of that sort but to call him Top 10 ever is kind of stupid. Leonard was better P4P and so was Whitaker.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Please back away from the keyboard and take your banishment like a man. Nobody wants to hurt you. Come out with your hands up.

Jon (Toronto)

Would you rather watch Haye Harrison 2, or receive 3 headbutts from Tim Bradley?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Tough call. I'll take the butts.

bill (carmel, ny)

before this chat i am not sure that duran and overrated had ever been used in the same sentence before.

Chris (NY)

Duran Duran may have been overrated

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Are you hungry like the wolf?

victor (north jersey)

your giving all victors world wide a bad name..stop please!!!

Eamon (Ireland)

What are opinions on Solis vs Klitschko? Does Solis have a chance?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Yes he has a chance. Of course. Do I think he wins? Not at all.

Charles (DFW)

So what do you think of the return of "Dallas"? Actually sounds like it might work, and all the original characters will be back.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Absolutely love it!

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Freaks, the new blog has been posted: http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/blog/_/name/rafael_dan/id/6090206/guerrero-get-shot-marquez

Gary Shaw (Detroit)

I am pleased to announce that Tim Bradley's next fight will also take place in the Silverdome. He will be fighting the Three Billy Goats Gruff.

Brandon (Boston)

I'm dying laughing about the pig farm in Colombia

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

I didn't make that up. I swear.

Jordy Boy (Twinkytown)

How about a SuperBowl prediction for the freaks before you go? Pretty please?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

I like the Steelers.

Brian (New York)

I was at the silverdome last week... how could the fight be sponsored by Corona, but no limes to go with the Corona????

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

If that is true, that is very weak.

Ben (Boston)

Dan, how much do you make a year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

None of your biz.

Rick (Chicago)

Did you see Arum say that he could envision a Pacquiao-Bradley fight, but only if Bradley signs with Top Rank? It is getting depressing how much these promoters won't even look at going outside their groups. Arum in particular.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

That's Arum for you. At least he wasn't lying about that.

James (Ireland)

Can you clarify is ESPN are showing the Rigondeaux v Casey fight in Ireland? The promoters are adamant it will be live on ESPN in the US.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

It is not scheduled to be televised in the US by ESPN live or on tape. I asked our programming people.

Zim (Boston)

Maybe the limes had the same driver that the press crew did and never made it to the Silverdome...

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

That's a good point.

bill (carmel, ny)

when aydin files his tax return, is his occupation listed as collecting step aside fees to not fight andre berto?

Roberto Duran ( Chicago)

Anybody seen Victor?

victor (north jersey)

any truth to cintron signing to top rank and do you even care?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

There is discussion of a co-promotional deal. Cintron does not interest me regardless of which promoter has him.

Bing (Philly)

I think I see Victor's point. Why did Duran even have a career? He was just going to retire one day.

JonG (Queens)

as dissapointing as the ending to Bradley/Alexander was at least we didnt get a bs draw or a bad decision of some sort. Bradley deserved to win and even though it ended early i thought it was a solid and fairly close fight while it lasted.

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

If not getting a draw or lousy decision makes a fight good then OK, you got it. I thought the fight started out interesting and went downhill. I do agree that as bad as it ultimately turned out, it was very close and competitive.

Jonathan (Mesa, AZ)

I am of the opinion that @danrafaelespn needs a minimum of 20k followers, agree?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

I agree. Closing in on 10,000 so let's get some followers on Twitter today!

Frank (PHX)

Does Golden Boy have any worry about Khan jumping over to Top Rank since his contract is almost up?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

I wouldn't say "worry." They will offer a new deal and if they can make one, so be it. If not, so be it.

Kris Krepps (GR)

Who picks the hotel the fighters stays @? I was @ the courtyard in Pontiac and so was Devon Alexander. It was like $70 a night. Very modest, or cheap?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

It was the official fight hotel mainly because it was a fine hotel and very close to the venue. Not all that complicated. It's not like there were tons of 5-star hotels in the area.

JonG (Queens)

Love to hear Danny Jacobs is going out west to train with freddy. Thats sign number 1 that he is going to use that loss to pirog to his advantage and do whatever he can to get better. glad to see it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I agree. Freddie will make him better.

Azteca604 (Vancouver)

Just read the new blog. I understand what Guerrero is trying to do, but how much would Marquez make in your opinion vs Guerrero. It's reported that Marquez is asking 2.5 million for the Morales fight. I don't think he would make more than 1 million vs Guerrero.

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

If Marquez fought Guerrero he would absolutely make more than a million bucks, a lot more.

Rags (NYC)

Whatever happened to Yorkis? Did he relocate to Germany with Cunningham?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Good question. Where is Yorkis hiding out?

Jeremy (Texas)

Yo Dan, It's been reported that pacquiao owes the WBC $80,000 in sanction fees. If people wanted to make the sport better, wouldn't you quit paying sanctioning fees then to all these governing bodies like the WBC since they're so corrupt.

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Yes, definitely. But if Pacquiao or his people made a deal to pay the disgusting WBC $80,000 over the two fights than they should pay.

Kurt (denim jacket)

Personally I find the blatant disrespect for Audley Harrison after the Haye fight to be despicable. He's a British olympic hero and he deserves more respect from people within the boxing community.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

LOL!

Willie the Worm (East Tennessee)

Whatever happened to Joe Greene is he still fighting?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I have no idea. Has he fought since losing to Vanes?

John (Overland Park)

Hi Dan. I appreciate all you go through to host these chats. I could never imagine what type of static you get from idiots who are simply bitter for whatever reason. Thanks for being such a thick-skinned soldier. I'm sure you have your own philosophy for dealing with the unwarranted abuse, but I know of no other gifted writers who put themselves out there like you do. True pro.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Thanks. The BS goes with the territory.

Miles (NYC)

Dan, have you ever seen the Klitschkos fight in person?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Many, of both brothers.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Why do you think Guerrero can't get his shot against Marquez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Marquez is not interested. Marquez knows it's a dangerous fight for good money but not the biggest money he can make. He's 37 and believes he should be fighting only the biggest fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

OK, Freaks, fresh from the Bat Email we have some Super Bowl picks from sent to me by Top Rank's Lee "Harv" Samuels: Nonito Donaire: Aaron Rodgers throws very few interceptions and will lead the Packers to victory. Fernando Montiel: The Packers seem to be peaking at the right time.Miguel Cotto: The Steelers will rumble to victoryRicardo Mayorga: Years ago I fought in Chicago. The people in the Midwest are very friendly. I'm rooting for the Packers.

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

And one more thing Freaks, let's all wish Oscar De La Hoya a happy 38th birthday today.

Zim (Boston)

Happy Birthday Oscar! Cheowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Tom (Uncletown Iowa)

Happy Birthday Golden Boy!

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Hi Dan, thanks for the twitter referral on Barrera-McKinney. Hard to believe it was 15 yrs ago! It was fun listening to the HBO broadcast team work through the first BAD broadcast, not to mention, just a tremendous battle between the then-undefeated Mexican hero Barrera vs. the aging American ex-champ with quite a bit of pop left. Thanks, again!

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Was an awesome fight. I need to dig out the DVD. Meant to do it last night but did not have a chance.

Mark (Mary Esther, FL)

Dan, I'm a loyal follower of your articles, and usually have a boxing question or two each week, but if you will, I'd like to take this time to give a shout out to my brother Rock, who passed away suddenly last week way too soon. We love you bro!

Jake (England)

Is Lateef Kayode the real deal?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

We don't know yet and that is part of the fun of watching his fights -- to see if he is the real deal.

Billy (Williamsburg)

Not sure what people see in Solis. To me, he's Sam Peter with a lighter punch.

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

He's a lot faster but I see where you're coming from. Solis was also a decorated amateur who won everything. Peter was an Olympian but with a very thin amateur background.

Edju (Salisbury, MA)

Happy 38th! Seems like yesterday you battered Jimmi Bredahl!

Dave (UK)

As it is De La Hoya's birthday, can you tell me which way you scored these controversial fights he was in:MosleyTrinidadWhitakerSturm

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

I was at both Mosley fights. I assume you are asking about the rematch. I had Oscar winning the fight. I did not attend the other three but I thought Oscar beat Tito and Whitaker and got licked by Sturm.

JB (Toronto)

DTM. At your suggestion, I picked up the Freitas vs Alexandrov fight. Wow! For any freaks who have never witnessed this bludgeoning. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iK_rZ-L_wU

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Sweet. I fell in love with Popo because of that fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Damn, what a sick knockout. I hadn't watched that in a long time.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Years later I got the poster and program from that fight.

Mike (Los Angeles)

You heard it hear first: Bradley will split with Shaw after April and sign with Top Rank for a fall fight with Pacquiao!

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

LOL. You're a litte late boss.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Happy Birthday, Golden Boy! Thanks for the memories, starting with your gold medal run that my family and I followed closely and emotionally in 1992.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Getting my tix for Maravilla vs Dzinzdiruk. Does Foxwoods offer up a good venue for watching the fights?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

The place where this fight will take place is excellent. I covered Froch-Taylor there and it's really nice.

GEo (ELA)

Man remembering POPO also reminds me of the Corrales fight. RIP. Although he quit, it was a good fight. I always remember the Barrios fight...Man where you at POPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Popo recently took office as a congressman in Brazil. I spoke to him just before he took office and plan to write something from that interview we had.

Killer (Queens)

Dan, do you ever get sick of boxing, even for a day or so, and want to hear nothing about it for awhile?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

Believe it or not, yes, that does happen sometimes.

Charles (DFW)

How do you think a Popo/Mayweather fight would have turned out at 130/135? People say Popo was the one guy Floyd really avoided in that class, probably because Corrales beat him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

As much as I love Popo, I think Mayweather would have beaten him. Too much skill and Popo was too wild and Floyd's defense too good.

Brandon (Kansas City)

Popo v. Casamayor is another good one.

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Popo's best victory. Close, but a legit win.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, didn't you mention that Barrerea-McKinney re-ignited your interest in boxing at the time? Also, you sure get a lot of camera time on that first BAD broadcast.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I got camera time on that telecast? Funny, because I was 25 and still four years from covering boxing for USA TODAY. In other words, I was nowhere near the fight.

Kris Krepps (GR)

I'm a huge Mayweather fan, but lately I have become very frustrated with him. It seems like boxing is the last thing on his mind. I hope he hasn't lost the will it takes to be great. Do you think he will ever fight again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

No idea, but I would imagine if he is not in prison he will fight again.

Dave (CT)

I was there the night Juan Diaz made Popo quit on his stool. That was tough to watch as a Popo fan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

I was there also and I agree.

Sweet T (NYC)

Dan,If Dan Rafael from Feb. 2008 had been transported to today, what would be the most surprising development in the boxing world? a) Pacquiao becoming a monser at 147 (+), b) seemingly budding-superstar Kelly Pavlik falling off a cliff, or c) B-Hop still going strong?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Interesting question. I think I would say A.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

Whats up Dan, really pumped for Donaire vs Montiel, will you be making it to Anahiem ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

No, since the fight is in Vegas.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

I rewatched the fight last night and saw you in the audience several times. You had a very nice seat for a great fight.

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Dude, I wasn't there.

Mike (Massapequa )

Seeing your post on BAD had me go hunting and I found and watched my VHS TAPE of the Barrea McKinney fight . One of the best fights I've ever seen but man I feel old

JP (Columbus, OH)

Who are you to dispute where Dave in Rochester says you were that evening? LOL

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

My bad.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Have you heard anything from BHop in the last few weeks?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

I haven't talked to BHop since a few hours after he beat Pascal.

Tom E (Lambertville, NJ)

Just got an e-mail from ticketmaster about pre-sale for Judah-Mbuza in Newark: Pre-Sale Password: FIGHT

Leonard Ellerbe (LaLaLand)

Dan Rafael was not at the Barrera-McKinney fight, because that fight never happened.

Dave (CT)

"I haven't talked to BHop since a few hours after he beat Pascal."I see we agree on the outcome of that "draw"

Trevor (Seattle)

What happened to Stevie Forbes?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

He fights on ESPN2 in a couple of weeks.

Mike (Los Angeles)

You said that Victor Ortiz was bigger than Berto. If Ortiz wins, does he intend to stay at 147?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

First of all, the fight is not made yet. If it gets made and Ortiz wins the fight I would imagine he would remain at 147 and defend his belt.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Jon Annik promised he would do a 2 hour chat next week. After he made that statement, he tried and failed to successfully carry your jock. Freaks should stop and appreciate that 3-4 hour chats have become the norm.

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Anik is my boy, but he can't carry the chat jock. And he knows it!

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Sorry, Dan...thought the handsome guy with the beard in the front row behind Buffer during the intros was you on the youtube vid.

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Dave, listen, I'm serious: A) You need help. B) This subject is now a closed book. Enjoy your weekend.

Derek (Brooklyn)

Is Ortiz still trying to get the fight at a catch weight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

That is the holdup at this point as far as I am told by both Schaefer and DiBella.

Nick (Queens)

Just looked up tickets for the Zab fight. $60 to $260 lol I'll pass. How does boxing expect to grow its fan base when ticket prices are so high? You can sit courtside at a Nets game on Stubhub for what it costs for Zab Judah nosebleeds you won't be able to see anything. Promoters need to get their pricing points in order.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

One thing you might want to remember is that this fight is at the smaller arena at the Prudential Center not the big arena, so I would imagine even the cheapest tix are very good.

Patrick (Limerick, Ireland)

Hey Dan you mentioned a few months back that Matt Macklin rang you asking to get his name out in the US. Do you think getting name recognition was his biggest reason behind taking the fight with Winky Wright and is it a risk worth taking?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Seems likely. It's a calculated risk: Come over to the US, face a big name who is past his prime who hasn't fought in awhile and see what happens? Macklin should be the slight favorite I would think plus he's making about $100,000 for the fight.

Hans (Burlington,VT)

Nick in Queens apparantly hasn't ever seen ticket prices to a championship fight. Those prices are actually good.

Tom E (Lambertville, NJ)

Sorry, but if you haven't accomplished anything, you can't be haggling for a catch-weight. Ortiz has to decide if he's a welterweight or a junior welterweight and take it from there.

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

I agree. Ortiz asking for a catch weight is absurd. If I'm Berto it's a nonstarter.

Denis (Montreal)

Sad day Petitte retiring I'll miss his staredown.

Mike (Massapequa )

I think Dave from Rochester has a man cruch on you Dan

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Maybe so, but it's kinda weird.

Charles (DFW)

Is Andy Pettitte a Hall of Famer in your opinion? The postseason might be the deciding factor, though personally I think he and Mike Mussina get in.

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

He has the numbers and the rings but the PED admission probably dooms him.

Kyle (Madison,Wi)

Hey Dan, I was watching an old reel of the Dempsey / Firpo fight and I swear that was you with the beard in the front row....:)

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Wasnt at that one either.

Tom (Reading, United Kingdom)

Dan loving the proposed Kendall Holt-Julio Diaz fight it makes so much sense. What are the chances that it get's made?

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

I think decent. I know ESPN is interested in the fight. Can the promoters actually get them to sign and get an acceptable site? We shall see.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Any news on Bernabe Conception?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

Probably will headline on ESPN2 on May 6 in Vegas, night before Pacman-Mosley fight.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

Who of your comtemporaries do you most enjoy being seated by on press row?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Several of us are almost always seated togehter and they are all friends so it's cool. When I cover fights in Vegas, for example, I am almost always in next to or close to whomever is covering for the AP, Kevin Iole, Tim Smith, Lance Pugmire, Robert Morales, George Willis, Steve Carp.

steven (louisville)

DTM do you know what fnf has scheduled for the swing fight tonight? Is it the Yanez fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

I just checked the sheets I get every week from our producers and yes, Yanez-Rios is supposed to be the first swing fight.

rob (williston park)

even without the PED, which will stop Pettite from getting in, his ERA would be higher than any pitcher ever in HOF - so although his 240 wins are impressive, his numbers really arent HOF worthy

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

How about the 19 postseason victories (most ever) and 5 rings?

dick (Patterson NJ)

Hey Dan i noticed you pronounce your last name rafael (ray-fel) instead of the tradional mexican way..is it because your trying to not let anybody know your ethnic background? crossover to the white market perhaps?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Maybe it is because I am not Hispanic?

Chris (Overland Park)

Dan, which fight would you want to see more, Khan vs Bradley or Mathysee vs Madiana? I think the Argentina championship would be a much better fight. Someone is getting knocked out.

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

For pure action, give me Maidana-Matthysse for sure.

Karl (NY)

Dan, what do you think of Steve Farhood. I spoke with him a few times back when he was with RING Magazine, and he seemed like a good guy.

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Farhood is the man and has become a good friend over the years even if he doesn't remember the first time we met at the HOF many years ago.

Gray (Miami)

Dan, i am a law student on full-student loans at U Miami. I just spent over $1,000.00 of my scholarship money for flights, MGM hotel tickets, and fight tickets for Foxwoods on March 12 for me and my girlfriend. I also spotted 4 buddies from Boston for fight tickets and told them if they dont have a great time i will eat the money. Freak Status? Thank you for all your hard work and coverage.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Impressive. That is dedication and true Freakdom.

Jon (Boston, MA)

Any update on Edwin Rodriguezs injury?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Good question. I need to ask about that.

carlos (houston, tx)

Lord, ALL I ASK IS FOR GBP & TOP RANK MAKE PEACE!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Keep dreaming. If anything, it's getting worse.

JB (Toronto)

What is your opinion of Doug Fisher as a commentator?

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

I have enjoyed listening to him on Fight Night Club. He's dedicated and you can tell he does his homework.

Alex (Florida)

Any word on how tickets are moving for Cotto-Mayorga?

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Not a clue.

Gez (UK)

Are the chances of Froch-Johnson being in the UK 0%?

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

More than that but it seems unlikely. If it goes to the UK, Johnson is going to want more money and Showtime is going to want to pay less.

Philly Geoff (Raleigh, NC)

Wow... so much for calling it like you see. Pettitte has the numbers? 240 wins and 3.80+ ERA and never elite? It's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Good. He needs to get behind Jack Morris and the like before even being considered.

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

I have always felt Morris should be in.

Jon (Boston, MA)

When is Seth Mitchell's next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Seth is probably going to fight March 5 on the Alvarez-Hatton undercard.

Alex (Winston-Salem)

You're right Dan BAD used to be amazing. I watched Toney-Jirov and Round 12 was the second best round I've ever seen.

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

That was a great fight. I was there and when Toney knocked Jirov down everyone seemed to be in awe. Great fight, great last round.

Joe (NJ)

Dan you should listen to Queen-Another one bites the dust , after every weekly chat. Your a machine

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY0WxgSXdEE

Carl (Palm Springs, CA)

Do you think HBO will inforce the Rematch clause with Tim B and Devon A?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

No chance.

James (Dublin)

9665 twitters followers. I think we could be seeing Popo and Thunder next week?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

When we get to 10,000.

Punxsutawney Phil (Punxsutawney PA)

Popo and Thunder are ducking me Rafael. When will they be mammal enough to face me.

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

Legendary.

Thomas (Los Angeles)

Dan, What's the latest with HBO's decision on picking up Pascal/Dawson?

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

Nothing is official yet and they still have some time. As I have said all along -- I suspect they will pick up the option but work something out for the guys to have different fights. I believe Pascal-Hopkins 2 is coming to HBO.

Charles (DFW)

Anything happening with Victor Cayo? Gave Maidana a good scrap and haven't heard from him since.

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

He has a fight scheduled in Panama coming up on the Moreno-Parra undercard. After that, maybe a spot on ESPN2. I know his promoter, Leon Margules, has been talking to ESPN2 about something for him. I'd like to see him back on FNF.

Robert (Illinois)

My girlfriend named her cat Sergio, in honor of my favorite current fighter, Sergio Martinez. Should I propose? :)

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

Tonight.

Julian (Davenport, IA)

Speaking of George Lopez, who's a big boxing fan, who in your opinion is the biggest boxing fan in Hollywood? I would have to go with Mario Lopez or Mark Wahlberg

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

All of those guys are big fans. So is Jack Nicholson.

Amain (Las Vegas)

Do you think Amir Khan is as full of himself as Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Not at all. Amir is much more down to earth as far I can tell.

Tom (Pittsburgh)

Pacquiao Mosley tickets nearly sold out in 3hrs. Alot of those may be brokers etc. but sales are sales, and Arum doesn't really care who buys the tickets. If he pulls this off it would be quite impressive.

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

Those are bogus sales. Sales? Sure. But there will be tons available from brokers. They are the ones who bought so many of them, not real fans.

Markos (Chi)

Any high hopes for Alfonso Blanco or Luis Valero? I lived in Venezuela a few years back and i want that country to have a star minus the crazy!

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

Haven't seen Valero but I have been at two of Blanco's fights and while he looks like a physical specimen I was vastly unimpressed with what I saw. But let's see if he develops.

David Haye (UK)

I also want to know when Popo and Thunder will be mammal enough to face the real Heavyweight champion.

John (Denver)

Dan, do you like cheese?

Owen (Utah)

What if we started calling him Timothy "SilverDome" Bradley? His moniker would then remind us of his biggest victory to date, and his most effective weapon

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

Not bad.

Skip (NYC)

whats with all this Epix talk Dan? am i missing something here can you info me please brother

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

What is so complicated? Did you read the notebook today? It is a premium cable station interested in boxing and has made an offer to televise Klitschko-Solis in the US.

The Good Doctor Filth (Cleveland)

Just getting to the Dave from Rochester part...hilarious. Maybe he is getting the first BAD confused with the first RAD.

bill (carmel, ny)

dan, is there still going to be a cruiserweight tourney?

Dan Rafael
  (2:49 PM)

Sauerland would still like to do it, but it's been a bit delayed with some other fights happening first.

Chris (Overland Park)

How exactly did Epix help generate a lot of subscriptions for showtime and HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

They didn't. Is the notion of reading comprehension gone? The point is HBO and Showtime generated tons of subs when they began doing boxing. Epix may seek to use the same formula. Really not too complicated.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

If Dave from Rochester pays you one more "compliment" might have to get a restraining order along with banishment. You can never be too safe.

Charles (DFW)

When is Randall Bailey fighting again?

Dan Rafael
  (2:56 PM)

TBA.

Keith H (Seattle)

Gotta love those Kansas school systems...

Hayemaker (U.K.)

Listen up Popo, anytime and anywhere. Let's give the fans the fight they want to see.

psycho (LaLaLand)

dan you said -Bradley-Devon was just the 3rd unification between US fighters. Did you forget Oscar-Hopkins?

Dan Rafael
  (2:58 PM)

What I said was between undefeated American fighters. Oscar and Hopkins both had losses before they met.

Markos (Chi)

can i be your intern?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

No.

CHOPPER (Brooklyn)

KISS: Music From "The Elder." Failed experiment, or underrated classic?

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

Failed experiment. Easily the worst KISS album.

TN (DC)

Who are your "Top 5 Welterweights" you've seen since you've been covering Boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

In no order I guess it would be Oscar, Mosley, Vernon, Pacquiao and Mayweather.

Keith H (Seattle)

Reading some of these posts, I'm convinced the only reason that humans are the most intelligent species is because we're the ones doing the survey.

Sean (NJ)

Did Spinks have no belts when he fought Tyson?

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 PM)

He had been stripped. Same thing with Mayweather-Corrales and Forrest-Mosley I.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

D Nice. You seemed fairly impressed by the staff at the Silverdome. Although the fight was a bit of a stinker, would you be happy to return there for another card?

Dan Rafael
  (3:03 PM)

If they want boxing so badly and they put up money and work hard and show hospitality why not? Just not in the winter.

manuel (orlando) [via mobile]

you really put forest over trinidad in top 5 welters?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

I didn't cover Trinidad as a welterweight. I covered Trinidad as a junior middle and middle.

Brandon (Kansas City )

Dan, you tweeted a video earlier this week that highlighted Boxing after Dark. What's the story behind the bit when the doctor makes Gatti cover his eye to continue fighting?

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

Gatti's eye was messup in the fight with Rodriguez and he was on the verge of getting stopped. Doc wanted to make sure Gatti could see. Gatti guessed right, continued fighting and knocked Rodriguez out in a sick comeback to end a great fight. That was the second Boxing After Dark main event.

@TheBoxingEmpire (Twitter)

We heard Mauricio Sulaiman was at the Silverdome...small sanctioning fees for all?

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

He was there. We talked at the hotel.

Dan Rafael
  (3:08 PM)

From the Bat Email: Lee "Harvvvvvvvvvv" Samuels from Top Rank reports that Yuriorkis Gamboa is training for the March fight with Jorge Solis in Germany.

Charles (DFW)

Be careful when you say vomit bags for everyone. I heard the WBC is going to start charging a sanctioning fee for them.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, thanks for the picture and quick talk last Saturday. I had a great time. It was my friends first fight and he had a blast. Got some good pics with Larry Merchant, Juli Diaz, Julian Williams, Kendall Holt and Gary Shaw. Everyone was really cool about it too.

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

Nice. Met tons of Freaks at the fight last week. I have said it a million times, the boxing people, including fighters, are generally the nicest most approachable people you will find in sports.

Luis X. (Puerto Rico)

So you talk to Sulaiman. Do you get along well?

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

We get along fine personally even though he knows I don't agree with just about anything they do as an organization. But Mauricio and I have always gotten along fine.

GOOFI (Disneyland)

Hey Dan, do your cats ever sniff each other's behinds?

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

Daily.

Loud Al (Vermont)

Great so now i have to pay for Showtime, HBO and Epix to watch semi-crappy fights?

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 PM)

Last I checked nobody forces anyone to get any particular cable service. So now, you don't have to.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

I'm in a meeting right now that involves expensive lawyers, investment bankers with a sizable transaction on the table...and it all takes a back seat to the Friday Chat. I've got this excel spreadsheet switch-a-roo key-stroke move to cover my fetish. It's pretty slick really.

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

Impressive. Now ask all those guys who the heavyweight champion is and let's see if anyone knows.

Barbara Walters (ABC)

What ethnicity are you?

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

If you were a tweee what kind of tweeee would you be?

Martin (NYC)

Interesting battle happening 3/5 between Adrian Broner and Daniel Ponce De Leon. You have speed and talent against power and determination. Who do you like?

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

I like Broner but Ponce is dangerous as hell. Lose focus for one second and it's over.

Kev (Brooklyn)

Hey Dan, is there truth to the rumor that mosley will go through tougher drug testing than pacman?

Dan Rafael
  (3:17 PM)

I am not aware of anything additional. But there could be. I just don't know.

Joe (Houston)

Dan, have you ever met David Haye? Do you two get along?

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

Met him a few times. Here's an interview I did with him about a year ago: http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/notebook/_/page/january_8-dan-rafael-weekend-notebook/david-haye-punch-back-talk

Cat Fancy (USA)

Spread the word freaks. We just need to get Dan 342 more followers and we can finally see what Thunder and Popo look like.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

The Groundhog did not see his shawdow, that means only 6 more weeks of David Haye ducking.........if only that were true.

Andy (Fairfax, VA)

Who wins tonight, Mora or Vera?

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

Mora SHOULD win.

Devon Alexander ((St. Louis, MO))

I can't type no more!! My fingers burn!! AHHH!!!

Dan Rafael
  (3:23 PM)

Now THAT was freakin funny. I love the Freaks.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

I got in an argument with a British David Haye fan on another site this week, and he said, "You're as dumb as Dan Rafael." I took that as a major compliment!

Dan Rafael
  (3:23 PM)

I will wear that like a badge of honor.

Oscar De La Hoya (East LA)

It's my birthday everyone! Cheowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!

Steve (Miami)

Is it just me of does Montiel-Donaire have FOTY written all over it?

Dan Rafael
  (3:24 PM)

It's a great matchup on paper.

Alec (Nashville)

Why didn't they give Devon Alexander 5 minutes to recover? Only get 5 minutes if you get hit in the jewels? Not headbutts?

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

I think because the doc told the ref to stop the fight believing Devon could not go on because he did not respond to the questions positively and because he felt like there was some nerve issue with his eye.

Julio (DFW)

Dan you tweeted a couple days ago about the Marquez/Morales fight possibly being in danger of not happening. Could you elaborate more on that

Dan Rafael
  (3:26 PM)

Not at this time.

sammy alsaidi (detroit)

who did u have winning the fight.paris or Augustus? it was nice seen u in the d town area.do u think we will land another big fight and detroit again or this is it for us?

Dan Rafael
  (3:27 PM)

I thought Augustus won the fight. A lot of people I talked to after thought the same thing. Paris is not much and I was not impressed at all. Augustus I thought toyed with him even though he was fighitng Paris and an incompetent referee.

Charles (Vegas)

Anyword on Bhops next move?

Dan Rafael
  (3:29 PM)

All depends on what HBO/Showtime do with their options.

Jeremy (Ireland)

Will JMM-Morales be at 135 if it's finalized?

Dan Rafael
  (3:29 PM)

If it is made it will be at 140.

Hayemaker (U.K.)

Dan, Since you elected to take this warmup chat this week. I won't be attending your chat next week.

Ben (Boston)

What are your thoughts on the Shah Khan and Alex Ariza feud?

Dan Rafael
  (3:30 PM)

I have none. They don't get along apparently.

Liam (New York)

how can JMM-Morales be at 140? I thought Morales wanted to win a world title in a 4th weight class but JMM holds a title at 135?

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

Because that's where it will be if it happens.

Charles (DFW)

If JMM/Morales is at 140, won't that prevent Morales from trying for his 4th weight class title? I thought that was what he wanted?

Dan Rafael
  (3:31 PM)

The weight was Marquez's call. Morales would have done either.

Zim (Boston)

The WBC will create some bogus title for them to fight for.

Dan Rafael
  (3:32 PM)

Of course they will. Probably for a diamond belt, for a small sanctioning fee of course.

Craig (Indianapolis)

DTM - just want to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to take a picture last Saturday night. Meeting you and the HBO guys made for a great night (which was much needed after the disappointment in the sudden end to the fight).

Dan Rafael
  (3:35 PM)

Any time. Even if the main event wasn't great, the undercard was really solid and I think the fans who showed up had a great time. It seemed that way to me.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

What is Bradley's issue with Shaw? Says he definitely will not resign with him?

Dan Rafael
  (3:35 PM)

I think it is more an issue between Shaw and the managers than with the fighter.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

David Haye has been forced to take down his Facebook page because of the growing criticism he's gotten after the Harrison farce and the ducking (again) of the Klitschkos. So Haye is now ducking his own fans!

Dan Rafael
  (3:37 PM)

No surprise. The heavyweight champion of England excels at ducking.

ROB (WASHINGTON DC)

While watching some Camacho fights on ESPN Classic with Joe Tessitore calling the action I was wondering... Did Tessitore call these older fights live or did ESPN buy the rights to the fight later down the line and have Tessitore call the action way down the line?

Dan Rafael
  (3:37 PM)

They are voiced over years later.

Lazarus (London)

Dan, please, can you put to this to rest. WHO is Khan fighting next?

Dan Rafael
  (3:39 PM)

TBA brother.

Dan Rafael
  (3:40 PM)

Sal from Stockton -- you're real classy. I'm going to turn your posts over to the cops.

Martin (NYC)

So do you regret traveling to Pontiac, MI?

Dan Rafael
  (3:41 PM)

Not at all.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Have you heard from your boy Brian Kenny today? Are the fights tonight still on? We have gotten a lot of snow here in the metroplex

Dan Rafael
  (3:41 PM)

As far as I know they are.

Cody (Minneapolis)

It's Stockton....who's surprised

Dan Rafael
  (3:42 PM)

Excellent point.

Mark (Chicago)

I'll take care of Sal from Stockton for you...just give me his address...fight freaks protect their own

Rafa (London)

It was interesting that most pundits picked Alexander last week, whereas most fighters and fans picked Bradley. No criticism, but can you talk us through your thoughts in picking Devon?

Dan Rafael
  (3:44 PM)

Most of the writers picked Bradley too. My reason for picking Alexander was that I believed he was slightly better than Bradley in numerous areas: defense, power, chin, height. Even so, I thought it would be very close. Turned out it was quite close and competitive, but Bradley got the better of it. No shock.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Do you have any idea if any FNF show has ever had over a million viewers ?

Dan Rafael
  (3:45 PM)

It has.

JonG (Queens)

if we could only see what sal from stockton wrote

Dan Rafael
  (3:45 PM)

I'd probably get canned for posting his filth.

JonG (Queens)

so I know most everyone including yourself is dissapointed how the fight turned out on saturday. Obviously the technical decision left a bad taste but otherwise i thought that fight was going just about exactly as I would have expected.

Dan Rafael
  (3:46 PM)

Thank you Emanuel.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

I found a picture of Sal from Stockton!http://img.moonbuggy.org/internet-tough-guy/

Dave (California)

Dan, Is HBO showing the undercard for the Donarie Montiel fight?? If so any good bouts? And if Gamboa and Lopez win there next fights could you see them finally get in the ring together?

Dan Rafael
  (3:48 PM)

HBO will also show the rematch between Mike Jose and Soto Karass to open the card. As for Gamboa and Lopez we are still nowhere closer to them fighting each other.

Hayemaker (UK)

I will fight Sal from Stockton. Just name the time and place.

Defending (Dan)

Don't be too upset. Sal has two things going against him...being from Stockton and being named Sal

Mel (UK)

DTMI follow you on Twitter, this week i noticed @Freddie_Roach - Do you if freddy is twitter or is it a fake?

Dan Rafael
  (3:49 PM)

I think it's fake but not sure.

Mark (Chicago)

sal from stockton: http://www.mymym.com/gfx/InternetFlamer1.jpg

Moses (Warner Robins, Georgia)

off the top of your head, which FNF in recent history has had the highest ratings?

Dan Rafael
  (3:51 PM)

I THINK it was either Tony Ayala vs. Yory Boy Campas or Eric Lucas vs. Vinny Paz.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC)

I and my organisation would be glad to take care of Sal from Stockton, for a small sanctioning fee of course.

Mike (SD)

Your schedule has Hatley fight Cisneros. Odds books have lines for for Hatley and Chatman. Who is correct?

Dan Rafael
  (3:51 PM)

Chatman is the replacement.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

But Sal does live in his Mom's basement. He's got that going for him. Which is nice.

Charles (DFW)

Is Tony Ayala the biggest waste of boxing talent this side of Ike Ibeabuchi?

Dan Rafael
  (3:53 PM)

Insanely wasted talent. And to top it off, he got out of prison, got a second chance and blew it and now he's gone probably forever.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Any news on Sadaam Ali ?

Dan Rafael
  (3:54 PM)

He'll be on the Judah-Mabuza undercard.

Tony (Cincinnati)

Speaking of wastes of talent - what is Ricardo Williams Jr. up to? A title bout soon?

Dan Rafael
  (3:55 PM)

He is fighting Feb. 11 on the off TV ShoBox undercard. He's another massive waste of talent.

Tim (KC)

You think Deyontay Wilder turns Alabama into a big time player in boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (3:56 PM)

I don't know about that but he is largely responsible for the creation of the state commission in his state, so that's a good thing.

Alec (Nashville)

If Julio Caeser Chavez Sr. came out of retirement right now, would he be favored in a match against his son JCC Jr.?

Dan Rafael
  (3:58 PM)

No. He's too small, too old and has done way too many drugs.

Leo (Los Angeles)

the undercards for pacman-mosley look sweet, i hope they get signed. Its the least Top Rank can do to attract the fight freaks into buying this ppv, since TR basically gave us all the finger by making this fight. Now that Lopez' next bout has been announced.. reminds me of Luevano. what ever happen to Steven Luevano? not the most exciting fighter but had tons of sweet science.

Dan Rafael
  (4:00 PM)

I hope TR can pull off the undercard it's talking about. We shall see. I will believe it when I see it. Luevano retired not long after the loss to Lopez.

Cody (Minneapolis)

elaborate on jcc sr's drug problems

Dan Rafael
  (4:02 PM)

Well documented. He's been in rehab a few times and has had a drug problem on and off for many years.

tommygunn (aberdeen)

dan do u think after his one sided beating of a abraham, the cobra proved beyond doubt what we always knew, that he was the superior fighter between him and joe calzaghe

Dan Rafael
  (4:03 PM)

Beating Abraham, whom Dirrell toyed with in the previous fight, proves nothing as far as how Froch would do with Calzaghe.

Dan Rafael
  (4:03 PM)

Thanks for the chat today Fight Freaks. Hope you had a chance to read the notebook, new blogs and news stories and the updated schedule and rankings. We have a solid Friday Night Fights card tonight too. Check it all out and we'll do it again next week. Have a great weekend and enjoy the Super Bowl. Peace.
