Chat with Nick Friedell

Nick Friedell
  (2:09 PM)

What's going on everybody. Greetings from Union Square in San Francisco. I just left practice a little bit ago. Let's get this chat rolling ...

Joakim (Chicago, IL)

When am I coming back man?

Nick Friedell
  (2:10 PM)

Right after the All Star break. Right, big guy?

Mo (Chicago)

Any news on the trade front? What are the Bulls willing to part with for an upgrade at 2-guard (Brewer + Korver are doing a fine job in my opinion)?

Nick Friedell
  (2:12 PM)

I still think the Bulls are interested in picking up a two guard. A few members of the brain trust actually went to Tuesday night's Rockets/Lakers game to get a closer look at Courtney Lee. He would be a nice fit, but they are still exploring all options. As for what they would trade, anyone not named Rose, Noah or Boozer. Anyone else is up for grabs. I don't think they want to deal Taj or Omer, but they would in the right deal.

Brian (Chicago)

How can the all-star selection committee overlook that fact that Boozer has been statistically more significant than that of Chris Bosh?

Nick Friedell
  (2:13 PM)

Because Boozer missed 18 games.

Can I Get A Hot Tub! (San Francisco)

Nick, us Bulls fans (especially those not in CHI, as you saw on Wed) NEED that Bulls Podcast....when will it be coming? We'll take it however way we can get it, i.e. You with a recorder.

Nick Friedell
  (2:14 PM)

Hot Tub, It's on the way my man. In the next week or two the first episode will go up.

ryan (ohio)

they wouldnt trade deng either nick

Nick Friedell
  (2:15 PM)

Yes, they would.

Jake (Choiya, Wisconsin)

Do you think the D Rose hype is peaking right now or could it actually get any higher?

Nick Friedell
  (2:15 PM)

It can get a lot higher.

Michael (Orlando)

I loved the way my broadcast team in Orl put this. "You can't ignore Korver when he's on the floor." It seems like any other guards out there with Rose are left alone, but you can't do that with Korver or he'll punish you. Why can't Korver start??? It can't be all about defense.

Nick Friedell
  (2:17 PM)

It's a lot about defense. Also, Korver is a streaky shooter -- something he's shown repeatedly in his career, and especially this year.

Chris (Chicago)

Mr. Blazer! Whats happening? Stackhouse, Anthony Parker? Really Bulls?? I say stick with what you have and try to snag an an Arron Afflalo or Jason Richardson in Free Agency. What say you?

Nick Friedell
  (2:19 PM)

The Bulls are going to do if it makes sense, but I wouldn't look for them to break the bank. The team knows that its window is just starting to open and they don't want to mess with all the cap space and potential flexibility they have.

DeAngelo (Chicago)

Do you honestly think Chris Bosh should of made the all star team over Carlos Boozer?

Nick Friedell
  (2:20 PM)

Yeah. Boozer missed 18 games. Even he knows that's too many. If he had stayed healthy he would have made it over Bosh. End of story.

chris (chicago)

Nick, the Bulls are having their best season since the Jordon years, largely with two of their key players being out of the lineup. I know it sounds crazy, but don't they have a shot at winning the championship, even if it's a small one?

Nick Friedell
  (2:22 PM)

Not this year unless they get a 2 guard. Next year with the right moves they'll be in the mix for years to come.

Rory (Chicago)

Simpy put.....what are we missing (IF ANY) to win the NBA Championship?

Nick Friedell
  (2:23 PM)

Simply put -- a two guard.

Juan (Chicago)

Nick, Rose says that he wants to win every game on this road trip. Can they?

Nick Friedell
  (2:23 PM)

If they play the way they did in LA on Wednesday -- why not?

Alex (Charleston, SC)

why do you pick the same question over and over

Nick Friedell
  (2:24 PM)

Because you don't send me a better one, Alex.

Ryan Borja (Chicago)

So Miami can win without a leigt PG or C and really no benchbut the Buls can't win without a SGand i think the Bulls play better defenseExplain?

Nick Friedell
  (2:25 PM)

The Heat have LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Rose is unbelievable but he hasn't reached their level yet.

Alex (Charleston, SC)

I DID FRIEDELL. ARE THE BULLS BETTER NOW THEN WHEN THEY PLAYED BOSTON IN THAT CLASSIC 7-GAME SERIES/ARE THE CELTICS/DO YOU THINK THE BULLS CAN BEAT THE CELTICS IN A SERIES.

Nick Friedell
  (2:27 PM)

Calm down, my man. Relax. Yes, the Bulls are much better. The Celtics are too. No, I don't think the Bulls can beat the Celtics in a seven game series this year.

wyatt (aurora, il)

what about Andre Iguodala? can the Bulls swing a trade for him and keep Deng?

Nick Friedell
  (2:27 PM)

No, Deng would almost certainly have to be in a deal for Iguodala.

Jacob (Herman)

Is it really a good thing deng didn't get in the ASG... Do you think the rest will help him?

Nick Friedell
  (2:28 PM)

It definitely can't hurt. But I think he was truly disappointed.

joe (south bend)

whoa, you think they'd give up Luol in a trade for a 2 guard? He's finally healthy and playing well.Plus, he's the only guy who can D up Lebron and/or Paul Pierce.

Nick Friedell
  (2:28 PM)

If it meant getting Carmelo, they would give up Deng in a second.

Ryan (Chicago)

Even without a great two guard are the Bulls a legitimate title contender this year?

Nick Friedell
  (2:29 PM)

No. No and no.

Matt (St. Louis, MO)

What do you see Kurt Thomas' role after Noah comes back? Does he stay in the rotation or do the Bulls freeze-dry him until the next emergency?

Nick Friedell
  (2:31 PM)

Kurt will stay in the rotation. He's been too good to go back to not playing at all now.

Dan (Lisle)

Everyone assumes that the Bulls will have a cake walk getting to the second round before playing Miami or Boston? But considering they will most likely play either Atlanta or New York in the first round, both those teams present tough matchups for the Bulls because of their length and athleticism at all five positions.

Nick Friedell
  (2:34 PM)

Agreed. That's why they're trying to win every game they can. They want to stay away from both of those teams, especially the Knicks since they've already beaten the Bulls twice this year.

William (Peoria, IL)

Do you think the Bulls will try to revisit aquiring JJ Redick from Orlando this summer? It seems he's been a bit of a let down from that they expected moving forward and I still think he'd be perfect for what our team needs.

Nick Friedell
  (2:34 PM)

I have no doubt they will ask to see what it would take to get him.

Grimus (Woodridge, IL)

Nick, Which seems more likely (1) D Rose winning MVP, (2) Thibs coach of the year, or (3) The Bulls reaching the NBA finals?

Nick Friedell
  (2:35 PM)

Number 1.

brian t (orland hills, IL)

why would the bulls risk depleting this roster for a questionable move at SG ? it doesn't make much sense when they haven't been completely healthy yey, and are still 20 games over .500.

Nick Friedell
  (2:35 PM)

That's why the Bulls management is hesitant to make a deal right now unless it's the right one.

Ryan (Florida)

Media guys always error on the side of caution. Most guys had the Bulls in the high 40's low 50's, now it looks like almost a 60 win team, yet the media continues to sell them short. They are 6-0 against the elite teams since mid december, mostly without their 2nd best player. I think you guys are still selling them short, and you always have the built in excuse "hey, its not like anyone else in their right mind had them winning". Thats bogus. This is still sports. Surprises happen all the time. No question here, but the Bulls most certainly are contenders. And you are right, Rose is not on Wade's level, he has surpassed it.

Nick Friedell
  (2:38 PM)

All right, here's a question for the panel -- Do you guys honestly believe the Bulls can win it all this year? If so, explain to me how they will get past the Heat, Magic or Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semis/Finals and then how they'll get past the Lakers or Spurs after that? I want to know.

Joe (Davenport, IA)

JJ Reddick is the answer at the 2 spot? There are 30 better SG out there, including Ronnie Brewer.

Nick Friedell
  (2:39 PM)

No.

Anthony ( Chicago)

We have a chance this year for a title. Dont u think management owes it to rose and chicago to get whats we need to compete for a championship now? Rose and the team are working hard so they should be rewarded.. I wanna wiiiiin!!!

Nick Friedell
  (2:41 PM)

So do they. I think the Bulls will be great for the next 5-7 years. And they're only getting better. All I'm saying is that I don't think they can win it all this year. The Bogans, Brewer Korver tripod isn't going to get it done in the playoffs.

Joe (Chicago)

I believe the Bulls can beat the Heat (they have no PG, C, and a weak bench) and Orlando (our defense proved we can stop their shooters. Howard can't beat us himself). You are right, however, when you state that the Bulls can't get past Boston, LAL, and Spurs (too deep/experienced).

Matt (Champaign, IL)

Nick to answer your question I'd say they will get past all those teams with what will, in my opinion be the best defense in the league when Jo comes back, and the leadership of the best PG in the NBA. I'm not saying they'll win but they damn sure have a chance. If I've learned one thing from this season its to never, ever rule Derrick Rose out.

Nick Friedell
  (2:44 PM)

Agreed, especially about the part regarding Derrick. I'm not saying they have zero chance this year, I'm just saying the chances are slim. But, as you said, if Derrick wants something badly enough he usually finds a way to get it.

scott (frankfort)

What does D-Rose have to do to win the MVP this year? Will Noah coming back help or hurt his case?

Nick Friedell
  (2:44 PM)

It's only going to help him because they should be able to keep winning.

Matthew (Chicago)

Random Drose Thought of the Day: He is going to have a year when he averages 2 plus steals and 1 plus blocks. AS A PG.!

Nick Friedell
  (2:45 PM)

Yep ... he's real good.

Adam (Chicago)

Do the Bulls feel a need to make a bolder move this year than they normally might due to the fact that there won't be an NBA season in 2011?

Nick Friedell
  (2:47 PM)

No, they are content to see how the lockout plays out and see what happens. They are going to be in a far better place than most teams after the lockout -- if there is one.

avi (tacoma)

Isnt bringing Hamilton the best idea? Championship experience, quality player.

Nick Friedell
  (2:47 PM)

Maybe not the best option, but definitely a very good one. Only if Detroit buys him out though. The Bulls don't want to add that deal.

Roddy (Chicago)

Mr. FriedellI'm impressed with the overall job coach Thibs has done with the Bulls, but I'm worried about his distaste for giving rookies/unproven players (ie. JJ) gametime experience. I know Asik plays some here and there, but he HAS to play with a starting center out, and Kurt Thomas's milage. Bottom line, even if the Bulls get a 2 guard in the draft, do you see him getting any playing time to make an impact?

Nick Friedell
  (2:50 PM)

I haven't gotten the sense that Tom won't play young guys. As far as Johnson is concerned, I think Tom gave him a small chance to earn some playing early and Johnson didn't take advantage of it. I don't think Tom will have an issue playing young guys in the future, though.

Jose M Dangle (Chicago)

I have been a longtime fan and don't remember seeing everyone (bench included) so into every game. How much fun is this Bulls team to watch and do they really get along that well?

Nick Friedell
  (2:50 PM)

As a basketball fan, it's fun almost every night. The players really do like each other which is not something you see every day in the NBA. Yes, they get along that well.

Alex (Des Moines)

Is DRose getting overhyped? Hollinger says he isn't even the best PG right now...I love him...I just worry he is getting to much attention right now...

Nick Friedell
  (2:52 PM)

Derrick is getting a lot of hype right now, but I don't think it's over the top. I also don't think it will get to his head. He's remained humble through it all and I don't think that will change.

Adam (Chicago)

Poor Omar's post game makes my eyes hurt and usually prompts sad, mournful howls from my dog. Is it a lack of strength, confidence or both?

Nick Friedell
  (2:53 PM)

Probably a little of both right now, but he is getting there. With another summer in the gym he'll be even better next year.

Nihal Patel (Elkhart, IN)

James Johnson is crushing the D-League right now (in an admittedly very small sample size). Do you think he'll come back to the Bulls with his head on straight and a few more basketball IQ points?

Nick Friedell
  (2:55 PM)

That's definitely what the Bulls are hoping. In the end, I still don't think he cracks the rotation this year.

Gus (Florida)

As well as Deng and Taj are playing is it a stretch to say them and our 2 #1 picks can't get a deal done for Melo?

Nick Friedell
  (2:58 PM)

Still don't see it happening. Carmelo wants to be a Knick and play in New York City.

Nic D (Edgewater)

Given your answer to the JJ cracking the rotation question, how concerned do you think we should be about ridiculous number of minutes our stress-fracture-prone small forward is playing? Why doesn't the coaching staff seem concerned?

Nick Friedell
  (3:01 PM)

Thibs and Deng have both gone out of their way to say that Luol is holding up fine. Deng worked out all summer to prepare himself for the year. He feels fine. The Bulls will watch him closely, but as of right now they're not concerned.

Rory (Chicago)

What is your favorite halftime act so far at a bulls game this year? Are they going to lure back the Blues Brothers to the UC? That would all but guarantee a Bulls Championship this year!

Nick Friedell
  (3:05 PM)

Quick Change is always the best. As for the The Blues Brothers, who knows? They may make a return in the playoffs. It's possible. On that note, I am out here. Great chat guys. Talk to everyone next week from New Orleans.
